Alleviating Hip Dysplasia Pain In Dogs

Hip dysplasia in dogs is a horribly painful disease. It is a disease that does not just affect large-breed dogs, although traditionally it is assumed that these are the only dogs that get it. There are some solutions to ease your dog's pain and work with the disease however. The avoidance of obesity, a regular, low impact exercise routine and glucosamine all seem to be parts of the solution. With the proper insight and attention, a dog's suffering can be assuaged.

The simplest way of looking at hip dysplasia is that the bones of the hips do not fit together correctly. The thigh bone (the ball) is supposedly snugly fit into the hip bone (the socket). Part of that snug fit is for movement, and another part of that fit is for weight support. Obviously, there is more than just bone there, there is a layer of cartilage involved. When any of these factors are compromised, it is called hip dysplasia.

The technical terms of this are that the femur is supposedly to fit into the acetabulum. The femur being the thigh bone and the acetabulum being the hip socket. Think of your own leg and how easily it rotates within of your hip. Now imagine an air pocket in there, or a layer of wallpaper covering the femur. Or imagine that it is just loose, and that you can reach down with your hand and wiggle your leg inside of the socket. You are well on your way to understanding a dog's hip dysplasia.

If the bones do not fit properly, there will certainly be some friction and that can lead to all sorts of arthritic pain issues. The degrees of pain can be mild to none, or extreme. If the ball is knocking around in the socket, this is called subluxation (partial dislocation). If the ball drops completely out of the socket, this is called luxation (complete dislocation). More interesting still is the fact that both legs will be affected, this is not a "single-side" issue. The limp that a dog will demonstrate is purely on the most compromised side.

Think again about the wallpaper between the ball and socket. There is supposed to be a smooth surface called the articular hyaline cartilage (or gristle) surface. It is basically a layer of springy cartilage. Obviously, this would be the oil or grease for the machine, but in the case of hip dysplasia, this layer of meaty lubrication is no longer present. What results is bone grinding against bone for each motion in the hip. The ugliest part of this entire cycle is that the dog's body tries to compensate for this by creating more bone within the hip socket and on the ball of the femur. This in turn can cause lots of painful, freakish misshaping as new bone is worn away.

With the extra "wiggle room" between the bone sockets, joint issues such as arthritis come into play. Interestingly enough, it is not just the large breeds like Great Danes, Rottweilers and Mastiffs that succumb to this genetic defect. Smaller dogs like Bulldogs and Pugs suffer from this as well. The breeds of dogs that seem to escape the plague of hip dysplasia are the sighthounds. Greyhounds for example, have low accidents of this disease. It is a tricky disease because it skip generations. However, if there is dysplasia in the immediate ancestor of the dog, the chances of your pet having it are significantly heightened and that even goes for mutts as well.

Overweight dogs are more prone to hip dysplasia as are dogs with too much or too little calcium in their diets. Other theories suggest that over-exercising a dog at an early age can trigger hip dysplasia as well. Exercise is good, however. A dog that is suffering from hip dysplasia has underdeveloped upper thigh muscles. Muscle mass in that area is said to possibly lesser the chances of the disease.

One way to tell if a puppy will develop into a dog with full-blown or even minor hip dysplasia is to examine how it moves about. If the puppy is slow to do things like pop up on all fours, take stairs or jump, these could be signs of possible joint issues. Another way to determine possible hip dysplasia is if the back legs are cow-hocked. Cow-hocked is a term that refers to a look that is similar to being knock-kneed (genu valgum) in humans. Quite simply, the legs bow in at the knees and then back out. A cow-hocked puppy is a strong sign of hip dysplasia.

If you have the finances there are several surgeries that can be done at varying stages of the dog's life. The most obvious and most expensive being a total hip replacement once the dog reaches adult size. Hip dysplasia in canines is a difficult subject to tackle because it is a hereditary disease. It has been programmed into the dog's DNA. Relief is what an owner needs to consider. Part of this relief would be exercise that does not involve impact like jumping. Also, the exercise routine should be a regular one and not something that is sporadic. Another aspect would be managing the dog's diet so that obesity is not an issue.

One of the simplest measures a dog owner can employ to help a dog with hip joint issues is to begin dosing the dog with glucosamine. Glucosamine is a proven, preventative additive that is found in some dog foods and can be purchased separately. It is absorbed into the system and goes straight to the joints. It is already in the dog's system, concentrated in the cartilage. The best thing about glucosamine is that it is anti-inflammatory and actually helps regenerate cartilage. Of course, it is not an absolute solution, but a dog can feel the benefits of glucosamine supplements as short as ten days after it has started taking it. Also, there are few adverse reactions to glucosamine. Heavy doses of it can cause an upset stomach which may lead to diarrhea or even vomiting. Glucosamine is mostly known for being easily ingested (some dogs find a dose to be a treat) and helpful to a dog's system.

Hip dysplasia in dogs is a disease that brings extreme discomfort. It is a disease that affects most dogs, and it is inherited through the family tree. There are some treatments for it, and there are some ways to ease the pain it causes. Proper weight, low-impact exercise and glucosamine all seem to be parts of the solution. Obviously, it would be better if dogs did not have to contend with such a hereditary disease, but with proper attention and care, a lot of the suffering can be alleviated.

How to Fish Bare Banks

Bare banks exist in virtually all reservoirs and lakes in the country. They are void stretches of clay, sand, mud or gravel or composites of these materials. Bare banks may border creek embankments, main river channels or islands. Some run for short distances; others stretch for hundreds of yards. Still, the thread that ties all bare banks together is their lack of obvious features. The degree to which bass use bare banks varies from lake to lake and even from one bank to the next. Bare banks in deeper and / or older lakes tend to attract more fish than do similar banks in shallow, newer lakes. The latter waters usually have other, higher quality structure to draw the fish. Bare banks are not as important in lakes that have timber or grass or lots of up and down bottom structure. Even in lakes with plenty of other structure, some bare banks still hold bass, and these can be honey holes because they are rarely fished. The only way to learn which banks are good is to test fish them. This takes a lot of time, and this is why fishing bare banks is more practical for anglers on their home lakes than for pros, who move around from one lake to the next.

Bass are more prone to hold along bare banks during seasonal migrations. The best times to fish these banks are spring and fall. In spring, the bass move into the creeks to spawn, and a lot of times they follow banks back to shallow water. And in the fall, shad swim into the creeks, and bass come in behind them. Much of the feeding activity during September and October takes place close in to shore. Sometimes bass also feed along bare banks in summer and winter, usually in main lake areas where wind or currents push shad up shallow. Bare banks have the potential to produce fish all year long. Wind is one of the main keys. Fishing along a bare bank is 100 times better if there's a wind blowing on it, especially on a clear lake. The waves 'blow in' baitfish. They stir up the bottom and expose crawfish. They break up sunlight penetration. Overall, wind blowing on a bare bank creates prime feeding conditions, and it causes the bass to be lower and more active. One more note about bare banks: They hold an extra attraction to smallmouth and spotted bass. If a lake only have largemouths, plain banks will be good sometimes. But is spotted and smallmouth are present, they can be great often anytime.

Bass Locations along Banks:

Actually, the term "bare banks" contradicts the actual makeup of these void looking structures. A bank may look bare if you're running down the lake at 50 mile per hour. But if you stop and really study and fish it, there's almost always something that will attract bass. It's just a matter of knowing what to look for and how to find it. You can find bass near subtle changes or isolated features along bare banks. Examples include where a bank's makeup changes (ie, gravel gives way to clay), where a creek channel swings near the bank, where a bank becomes flatter or steeper, or where a bank makes a slow turn. Also, underwater features along a bank are like beacons that draw bass. A stump, log or large rock can have a magnetic effect on fish swimming alongshore. Also, a lot of people sink brushpiles along bare banks. A brushpile along a bank that does not have any other features is almost sure to bet to draw some fish, plus it's not as likely to be found by other fishermen because of the lack of fishing pressure.

Knowing what to look for along bare banks and being able to find these spots are two different matters. A visual check is simple enough. An angler can see bank composition changes, shoreline turns or dark shadows of underwater stems or logs. (Polarized sunglasses are vital in seeing below the surface.) He can also study a topo map to find where channels angle near the bank. However, most fish attracting features along bare banks are hidden from view and not shown on maps. Fishermen have two methods for finding them: electronic inspection with a depthfinder; and test fishing. Start out checking a bank by idling along it and watching your depthfinder. Zigzag in and out to scan different depths. Mainly, look for cover down the side of the bank, and also watch for contour changes and baitfish returns. If a bank is 200 yards long, cover it all. Then if you see anything that looks promising, turn around and fish it. It's common to idle part way down a bank and see nothing, then to begin detecting features or fish. Another approach is to start at one end and fish it all. This way you can really cover the whole bank effectively. Invest the time to go down it and check different areas and depths. That way you can do a thorough job of eliminating thinking and develop a reliable pattern. As you fish along, constantly monitor your depthfinder for objects or changes in the bank's contour. Look for little shelves or places where the first break occurs close to the shore. Again, these are the minority, little changes where bass are more likely to be. Sometimes the only way to find these places is by fishing the whole bank.

Baits For Bare Banks:

For fishing bare banks you can rely on a small selection of dependable lures: crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters, grubs, jigs and plastic worms. Diving crankbaits are top choices for prospecting along bare banks from early spring through fall. Also, because you can cover water quickly with them. In addition, you can cast them right to the waterline, then bump them back down the bank's subsurface slope. This facilitates a check of depths ranging from a few inches to deeper than 10 feet. Another good bait for searching bare banks in early spring is a jerkbait. Fishing a jerkbait is a good way to catch suspended bass. It's especially effective when the water first starts warming up (low to mid 40s). When fishing this bait move along the bank while making 45 degree casts to the shoreline. Cast right to the water's edge, and crank the bait four or five times to start it down, then begin a "jerk pause jerk jerk" retrieve. Repeat this all the way back to the boat. The colder the water, the slower you want to work the bait. A spinnerbait is a third option for prospecting along bare banks in the prespawn and spawning periods. A spinnerbait should be cast shallow, then folded down the slope with a middepth retrieve. Many times, if bass are actively feeding, they will be drawn in by the flash and vibration, and they will hit from below or beside the bait. Alternate among crankbaits, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits to see which the bass prefer on a given day. This is just a matter of trial and error. One day the fish will hug bottom, and the diving crankbait works best. The next day they may be suspended, and the jerkbait is best. And the third day they may be roaming and feeding, and the spinnerbait is the trick. You just have to analyze the weather and water conditions and try to figure out how active the bass are and whether they're shallow, deep or suspended. Then pick the bait that will work best under those conditions. But if that bait does not work, try the other two type. Sometimes bass are hard to second guess. Jigs, grubs and worms (so called slow baits) are seriously along bare banks. These baits are good under three distinct circumstances.

If you're working a shoreline with a crankbait and hit a piece of cover without a bite, pick up your jig or worm rod and work the cover a little slower and more thoroughly. If the bass are not too active, it's not uncommon for them to pass up the crankbait or a spinnerbait but to hit a jig or worm. The second case for using a slow bait is when a bank has yielded some fish to one of the faster baits, and the angler wants to make another pass down the bank and offer remaining bass a different option. And the third case for using grubs, jigs and worms is when a pass down a bank with faster baits yield no action, but the angler believes bass are present and just not in a chasing mood. Topwaters are excellent baits for fishing bare banks after the water temperature rises into the 70s. This is just another alternative. Topwater baits fished along bare banks early and late in the day are a good pattern for heat-of-the-summer fishing. This may not be the most consistent pattern in the world, but sometimes it will produce some big fish.

Use Landscaping Lights To Transform Your Garden

Installing electrical lighting system is important from many angles. Apart fro providing lighting, lights also provide security to your garden. This is especially true if a major portion of home landscaping is in the backyard. The lighting indications that the space is occupied and keeps away any unwanted intruders in the property promises.

There are many creative ways to carry landscaping lighting. But lighting designed purposefully for garden can be categorized into two types.

1) General purpose lighting

2) Special purpose lighting

1) General purpose lighting – In this type the main purity of the lighting system is to provide lighting during nighttime. Keeping this in mind the locations of the lights is decided. Which are the areas that require general-purpose lighting?

  • walkways that will be used for commuting within the garden
  • Swimming pool
  • Kids play area
  • Outdoor patio

Since these areas have a very specific purpose and function in the garden, good amount of illumination is necessary.

2) Special purpose lighting – This type of lighting can include colored lights for mood creation. Whatever to include such kind of lighting in a garden entirely depends upon the owners wish. There are certain factors that govern the use of special purpose lighting, such budget, purpose of adding them, etc.

In most case the special purpose lighting is included in the landscaping lighting system for two reasons

  • Value addition
  • Creating mood

The special purpose lighting includes use of floodlights and spotlights that illuminate only a portion of the space. These can be used to elaborate a special space in the garden such as rock garden, water fountain, sculpture, a big tree etc.

Thus landscaping lights can be used very creatively. With a combination general purpose and special purpose lighting (if necessary) wonderful landscaping lighting effect can be easily created.

High IQ And The Thirst For Knowledge

Einstein once said that curiosity was his friend and his memory was a faithful servant. Okay so, what's more important; the question or the answer? Well, my friend I will submit to you, it depends on who you ask. For if the person you ask is you, then the question is more important, because the simple asking of a question sends you on a journey to seek out the answer and discover new things, for which more questions emerge. This is how an active high IQ mind works. Let's talk shall we?

You see, this topic came up a couple of years ago at our think tank, and Mark who is a genius in his own right told me; "I have no idea why my mind wants to have all this information. I've always been curious my whole life but I thought that just a simple trip outside would require so much thought."

It does not 'require' so much thought, but his mind enjoys the process, so it just runs away with it. Nothing wrong with taking curiosity and coupling it with imagination – plus belief, creating a world within a world, hey did you see the movie "Limitless" and "Inception" kind of reminds me of all that, with a little "Matrix" in the mix – pretty cool.

To my reader so you can follow along, here is some advice to get into the curiosity mode. You might try this; pick up package, read the ingredients then try to back imagine the supply chain, from the crops in the field, to the tractors used, to the rubber, steel, and hydraulic systems on it, to who made them, where did the come from , to the iron ore mines, to the rubber vulcanization plant, to the GPS maker running the electronic hardware inside the combine harvesting the wheat, to the seeds, the labs designing the seeds, to the BMW the guy in the lab drives, to his home, his college aged kids, their friends, and their family, to the lady standing next to you. How many degrees of separation is she, are you, from that product you are holding in your hands?

That's what I do. I look at people and put together their life stories, guess their profession, what bought them there, what they are thinking, based on body language, facial expressions, clothes, shoes, etc. It is amazing how good you can get at this, and what if you went into their life a little more, asked them questions and found out were you dead on in your estimation? It happens to me all the time.

Try this too on your next walk, look at a commercial building imagine the inside, layout, furniture. How accurate do you think your projections are of the room, lighting, temperature, air flow, furniture of those rooms, buildings, businesses are as you walk down the street? You might be surprised how close your estimates are. Maybe there is a possibility to ride a brain wave onto the photons flowing through the window? Next, enter the building see how close your predictions are, hone your skills, and refine your predictions and probability judgments in your mind, it will be easy to remember when you were wrong and when you were right.

Try it, you will be amazed – curiosity is a wonderful attribute for a high IQ, fast processing mind.

Presentation Audiences – 5 Barriers To Active Listening And How Public Speakers Overcome Them

As a speaker it might seem remarkable for some of our audience not to listen to us. But it's not remarkable. It's true. And there are good reasons for an audience being inattentive. Many of the reasons are down to us as speakers – and there are things that we must do about it.

  1. Information overload. It's a fact that we give too much information in a speech or presentation. We use intensive bullet points or lists such as these! We often have more than one PowerPoint slide for each 5 minutes of talk (sometimes many more). We use too many examples, analogies or case studies. In all cases the listening powers of the audience are being treated a disservice. Less information is more.
  2. Audience Preoccupation. An audience's travails at home, in the office or on the sports field can leave them underwhelmed when it comes to our speech. As speakers we have the duty to know, or at least understand, our audience. If industry redundancies are in the air when we speak to the Manufacturing Association their thoughts will be elsewhere. If the big match was last night or tonight then we'd better be prepared.
  3. Think ahead. When we speak at the rate of some 150 words per minute our audience might well be thinking ahead at the rate of 600 or 700 words a minute. They may be pursuing a tangent that we left a moment ago. Or they may be puzzling over something that's not quite clear. In all these instance our duty as a speaker is to be alert to their situation. We need to build structure and organization in our speech. We must use a good outline and make distinct recognizable points. We must use repetition to emphasize these points. And we must be alert to audience reaction as we speak. If the eyes glaze over, then there's something wrong with our presentation.
  4. Noise. Not all public speaking will be in a rarefied auditorium with pitch perfect acoustics. Afraid not. For most of us will become familiar with speaking in a noisy conference room, a seminar in the basement or next to the hotel kitchen. And to exacerbate the environment, we should also note that a good proportion of our audience is likely to have some form of hearing impairment – that's the way it is. We have to accommodate it. Prior preparation will help. We can ensure that our audience is as close as they can be. We can ensure that the seating is raked towards us and we can ensure that the catering team roll out the coffee trolleys once we have finished. Beyond that – speak up, tone up and emphasize the key points.
  5. Audience exhaustion. We should be alert to the audience's physical tiredness. Their active listening to a day or two of conference speaks is exhausting. If we are less competent to be speaking at the end of an event we need to be prepared: be ready with some participative exercises, change the pace or use more multimedia.

Tackling the 5 challenges of a non-listening audience is not hard work. We need to project enthusiasm and interest in our topic. We have to appear animated and fired-up – even if it is the final day of a 3-day conference. Our speech should present clear tangible benefits to our audience – providing good reason for their attention. And we have to structure our speech to meet their attention needs. It should begin on a solid footing, have a recognizable middle and end on a high note. By keeping the speech simple and uncluttered we ensure that the barriers to listening are easily overcome.

How to Choose the Right Roofing Material

Metal roofing normally appears in several materials such as copper, steel and aluminum. It also can be in a shape of sheeting and tiles. They are long-reflecting, non-combustible and they are also good at shedding snow and ice. The majority of metal roofing materials are created from recycled material and they can be recycled again. Metal roofing has great energy efficiency qualities. On the other hand, aesthetically they do not look very nice. Especialially metal sheeting. Most of us know that metal can contract a corrosion so it needs a good corrosion protection. We advise you to avoid installing steel roof because of its characteristics if you live near a coast since steel is very late to corrosion. You will additionally require much larger gutters to take care of the runoff due to the fact that the metal roofs spill water at a faster rate than textured roofing materials.

Asphalt shingle

Known as composition shingles, asphalt shingles are one of the most common materials when it comes to roofing. They are usually economically priced even though some of the "top of the line" asphalt shingles can rival the cost of some more expensive roof materials and roof types. Premium asphalt shingle has a longer warranty than some basic shingles and some states offer asphalt shingle recycling programs.

Wood shingles

Wood shingles are a popular choice when it comes down to roofing options. They are very attractive roofing material. Because of their nice visual texture, people often use them on a steeper roof slope where roof is more visible. Because wood shingles are made from sustainable material and they are recyclable, it is also a greener choice. They're usually made from redwood, pine, cypress, and western red cedar. Because of their aesthetics, people prefer them over other standard roofing choices. Wood shingles are not as dark as asphalt shingles. Installing wood shingles is difficult, it is advisable to have them installed by professionals with experience. Another thing, they are not fireproof, if you stay in areas where seasonal wildfire is a thing, it is not recommended to install wood shingles on your home. Nonetheless, wood roofs may be fire retardant, but that does not make them fireproof. They also succumb to rot and decay over time so it is important to keep them free and clean of debris. Regular inspection and maintenance are also required.

Concrete / Clay tiles

Clay and concrete are heavy materials and that means that your support beams and roof structure needs to be designed to carry the weight of concrete or clay roof. Tiles are also extremely fireproof; they offer a wide range of architectural styles and they also can mimic other roofing materials like wood or slate. Like with wood shingles, they also require installation by experienced professionals.

Composite roofing

Composite roofing can be found in several types of materials like rubber, plastic combinations of both or fiber cement. Composite roofing copies other types of roofing styles like tile or slate. It offers a lower expense opposed to more costly roofing styles like slate and more affordable serving. It is lighter than conventional slate, or concrete roofing material and it can be installed over standard roof structure. Also, it can be very long-reflecting. Neverheless, it is fairly new on the market so its long-term sturdiness and functionality are not fully known.

Slate roof

Slate roofing belongs to the most durable and long-lasting materials on the market. It is made out of a genuine stone and it can look gorgeous. Like with clay and concrete tiles, slate roof is heavy, and your roof structure needs to be engineered to support its weight. Because of its beauty and durability, slate is one of the most pricey selections you can make. It is long-lasting, fireproof, visually appealing and can be reused. It also calls for competent professionals roofing company for installation and is among the most expensive roof types available

The Hollon Republic Series PDO RG-16C Fireproof Gun Safe

For gun owners who have invested a significant amount of money in their gun collection the Hollon Safe Republic range of fireproof gun safes are designed and constructed to withstand burglary attacks and protect valuable weapons in the unfortunate event of a fire. With the capacity to hold sixteen long guns and extra storage options using the pocket door organizer the PDO RG-16C Republican Series fireproof gun safe meets and surpasses the construction specifications for a true burglary and fire resistant gun cabinet. The PDO RG-16C may be the smallest of the Hollon Republic series of fireproof gun safes but still boasts all the refinements of it’s bigger brothers.

Two layers of fireboard provide one-inch thick fire protection for the safe’s body and three layers one and a half inches are used in the construction of the door. The safe is Torch Resistant Fire Rated for one-hour fireproof protection at 1250 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure weapons secured in the RG-16 gun safe are protected from water and smoke damage in the event of a fire, the safe door has a heat activated intumescent door seal designed to seal out smoke and water.

To protect the gun cabinet from being pried open the five-inch thick door has 1/4″ (3 gauge) solid steel plate added to the entire door plus drill/ballistic armored hard plate to protect the lock. Additionally, the construction of the PDO RG-16 gun safes door includes seven (7) active steel 1 1/2″ locking bolts and three (3) 1 1/2″ fixed locking bolts on the hinged side. All the locking bolts are chrome plated solid steel. To prevent punch attacks the RG16 has an active spring-loaded re-locker. The high quality construction of the door is complimented by the steel construction of the safe’s body which is made of 9 gauge seamless steel.

The PRO RG-16 gun safe comes with external hinges that allow the safe door to open a full 180 degrees and when maintenance is required the door can easily be removed. Some experts argue that external hinges make the safe easier for burglars to break open. This is only the case where the safe has no locking bolts on the hinge side. This gun cabinet comes with and three (3) 1 1/2″ fixed locking bolts on the hinged side. Even when the hinges are completely removed the door remains securely in place.

The heavy duty steel construction of the safe gives it a weight of four hundred pounds (400 lbs) unloaded. While this is heavy it is not that heavy that professional thieves cannot remove it. To prevent the safe being taken off site pre-drilled anchor holes allow the gun safe to be bolted into position making it impossible for thieves to make off with the safe.

To store weapons without being damaged the interior of the RG16 gun safe has four removable shelves, three small adjustable shelves and one full length adjustable shelf, and is finished in a soft plush tan trim.

Manage BHO to Prevent Browser Hijacking

Why is "Browser hijacking" so rampant? Many people have met such a situation: advertisments pop up as soon as your computer starts up or IE homepage is changed. In fact, these are typical "Browser hijacking" phenomenon. But the victims have already installed anti-virus software, why the browser still can not put an end to this problem?

As we all know, anti-software is only an auxiliary tool itself, it can not completely protect system security. Moreover, the attacks of "browser hijacking" can be recognized by system as legal means. Because anti-virus software can only judge if the program is legal by "code", but implementation programs of "Browser hijacking" can be countless and most of browser hijackings are achieved through BHO.

BHO stands for Browser Helper Object. It is an interactive interface which is designed by Microsoft in 1999. Through this interface, third-party programmers can write code for some browser actions and events, such as "Back", "Forward", "Current Page" and can get all the browser component information, such as menus, toolbars, coordinates. The programmers can also control the operation of browser through it. These operations are considered "legal" but this is the beginning of the "Browser hijacking".

BHO's initial goal is for our benefit, but cybercriminals are able to damage the user's browsers through it using some professional software. Once installed, the malicious BHOs will become a part of the browser, and then they can control browser's operations. What's the worst is that the "browser hijacking" is discovered after some symptoms occurrence. The lack of BHO management will be a big threat for us and our computers. As Internet browsers are used frequently and so important for our computer, the management of BHO is imperative.

In order to meet with the threat from malicious BHOs, BHO manager is indispensable, and we'd better find a safe way to remove the malicious BHOs . The first step is the actual identification of the malicious BHO, if you are a computer veteran and you can do it yourself, then you can manually remove them. In addition, to protect your computer much better, you should do this work regularly. Guidelines for Installing Turbidity Curtains

It is very difficult to pin point the exact guideline for installing turbidity curtains. The conditions vary from one place to another and the technician has to take note of all the affecting factors before suggesting a turbine curtain. However, there are certain basic rules that hold good in all the locations irrespective of the conditions of that location.

The Three Golden Rules That Must Be Followed

There are three rules that turbidity barriers must follow irrespective of the conditions in which they are employed.

RULE 1: When the turbidity curtains contain the silt and the sediment, it must be held in the area of containment for a sufficient length of time. This time duration is determined by the amount of time the silt takes to settle down to the water body's bed. The area of containment must also be wide enough such that silt will get accumulated evenly over the area.

RULE 2: The size of the silt particles must be evaluated to determine the settling time for the silt particles. Silt samples must be collected at five to six random spots along the water body and analyzed. The turbine barrier expert will then specify the perforation ratio of the barrier fabric that should be used and also the settling time.

RULE 3: The current in the containment area must be considered before deciding on the height of the barrier. Over a period of time, silt will accumulate to the top of the barrier and if the current is strong enough, water will flow over the barrier. This can be preceded in two ways.

Choosing a turbidity screen which is above the water surface by 3 to 4 feet will ensure that the water will stay within the barrier irrespective of the silt accumulation. Choosing a wide area of containment will ensure that the silt and sediment spreads evenly, avoiding mounds of silt and possibility of the water current flowing over the barrier.

Other Guidelines to Be Followed

The turbine barrier installing technician should be flexible enough to work around the conditions to ensure the optimum operation of the barrier. For example, if the water current is too string, there is no other option than to use a perforated barrier fabric. A non perforated barrier fabric will increase the pressure on the reinforcement stakes, reducing their lifespan.

Similarly, there are other obstacles which have to be faced in other locations. The important thing is to have knowledge about the different types of turbidity curtains available and use them in a way which is best suited to the location of installation.

Marble Flooring Is A Good Choice In Certain Situations

Marble flooring and granite flooring materials are widely popular and have seen a huge growth in sales over the past ten years or so. If you are considering new flooring material then marble flooring may be the perfect choice. This article will examine this flooring material closer o help you make a decision.

It is reported that sales for hard rock materials such as marble flooring and granite flooring have increased by over one thousand percent in the past few years. The class and elegance that this surface adds is one of the contributors to the huge spike in sales.

Marble makes for a very durable flooring material because it endures some very rigorous processing before it ever becomes marble. Most people are aware that the earth has extreme temperatures, but you may not be aware that this extreme temperature causes the limestone within the earth to crystallize and form marble. Because of this process the natural processing makes it very hard and excellent for flooring.

Since marble flooring is a natural product you will find that stain resistance is a natural built in benefit to choosing this type of flooring material. Marble flooring is extremely popular when installed in the entry ways of many homes. The fact that you can simply wipe up the marks from dirty shoes is real plus.

In the bathroom you may find that nail polish, shampoo, and other liquids are spilled all too often. With marble flooring you may need to worry about this fact some. You may need to resurface your marble flooring every few years to keep the shine and beauty, but these are really a benefit as you can restore this material very nicely and then have a brand new flooring without the trouble of removing and installing new flooring material.

There are some nice alternatives to marble flooring that may be less expensive, but you may be able to find some good deals at certain times of the year.

5-ACP Little Giant Pool Cover Pump Review

Is excess water on top of your pool cover going from an annoyance to a major problem? Well check out the review of the 5-ACP Little Giant Pool Cover Pump to see if it is the right pump for you.

Price: This pump is slightly overpriced compared to its competitors. You can save some money by purchasing this pump online, but it is still going to take a hit on your wallet. However, owning a pool is not cheap so this may be something that you need to invest in to keep your pool at its maximum potential.

Extra Features: Compared to some other models, the automatic shutoff switch that comes with this pump can be very important. It also has a stabilization plate that will allow you to use this pump for other water removal purposes if you choose. Other than these two features, everything else included is pretty much standard across all pool cover pumps.

Reliability: This pump is reliable when used according to the manual. Unfortunately most pool pumps are not designed to be able to handle freezing. If you allow the pump itself to freeze it will break the motor. However, you are going to run into this problem with nearly all models so when you buy a pump, make sure you are using it for drainage and that you bring it back inside during freezing temperatures. The quality here is about average so do not expect this pool pump to last more than 5 years.

Power: This pump has sufficient power to do the job. Look for this pump to be able to clear out 1200 gallons per hour according to the Little Giant manufacturer's specifications. This should be plenty enough for your pump

Warranty: Yes, a warranty is included with this product

Overall: This is a very average pump. You are going to pretty much get what you expect out of the 5-ACP Little Giant Pool Cover Pump.

Spotting Scopes For Hunting & Daytime Viewing – Yukon Advanced Optics

A spottingscope is easily distinguishable from its distant cousin, the telescope. It’s considerably smaller, very portable and uses relatively low magnification – although for scopes with similar uses, it does have a considerably powerful magnification capability. Unlike the telescope, the spotting scope does not produce an upside down image of an object but instead presents an upright one. Among the manufacturers of spotting scopes, one of the most reliable is Yukon Advanced Optics, already a recognized name in the industry.

Spotting Scopes

Spottingscopes are a favorite instrument for use for observing wildlife and landscape. They are also often utilized for hunting, birding and general surveillance. Some scopes may even be designed to be mounted on a camera for taking photographs.

Yukon Advanced Optics manufactures high powered spotting scopes. Its 6-100 x 100, for example, is considered as one of the most powerful and efficient in the industry. The range of magnification it offers (magnifying objects at least 6x to 100 times its original size) allows the user to view objects from a distance of a mere 20 meters to several kilometers.

This spottingscope is excellent for daytime use, thanks to its multi-coated lenses and extendable sunshade that significantly cut down glare. The scope also features two objective lenses that may be interchanged easily, allowing the user to switch from viewing a nearby object using 25 mm lens to observing a distant object using a 100 mm lens. Changing viewing angles is also easy, thanks to its rotating eyepiece.

The Scout Series

One of Yukon Advanced Optics’ most popular spotting scopes is the Scout series, a very reasonably priced piece of equipment. Designed after the foldable spyglass, the Scout spotting scope can be easily expanded to its total length and just as easily stored when folded. To refine the focus on magnified objects, the scope’s eyepiece may be rotated.

The Scout is designed to be carried although its function may be extended by mounting it onto a tripod. Yukon Advanced Optics does not manufacture tripods for this series but a typical tripod used for standard cameras will do.

Highly affordable (this is one of a few daytime spotting scopes priced at less than $150), the Scout is nevertheless a highly functional and very reliable piece of optical equipment. It features 20x magnification for close-up views, a 12 mm eye relief to prevent eye strain and a wide 54 m field of view.

The Scout is compact and lightweight. As can be expected of any spotting scope that will see some outdoors action, the Scout features a tough, rubberized outer shell. It has a collapsible body for better portability and high quality lenses that are capable of producing images in high resolution. Multi-coated lenses use magnesium fluoride for better image production.

Like all products in Yukon Advanced Optics’ lines, the Scout is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

Flexible usage

Many of Yukon Advanced Optics’ spotting scopes are designed to adapt to cameras, particularly digital cameras. This is to expand the use of the spotting scope and allow the user to capture images using this instrument. The high power magnification of spotting scopes as opposed to those that come with a standard camera produces images of excellent quality that may otherwise be difficult to produce.

Since spottingscopes also use relatively high magnification compared with other optics, Yukon Advanced Optics also manufactures tripods for mounting. Generally, using a handheld spotting scope can be problematic because it produces hazy images due to movement. To prevent this, an especially designed tripod accompanies certain scope series.

RV Replacement Awnings: Vinyl or Acrylic?

When you search the internet for RV awning replacement fabrics you will soon discover you have 2 basic choices, acrylic or vinyl, with acrylics getting most of the attention. You’ll also find many acrylic manufacturers marketing their fabrics (this is not true for vinyls) which will lead you to the conclusion acrylics are it and vinyl is no more than the poor mans substitute for the real thing. In the RV world that leaves you with A&E (Domestic corporation) using primarily vinyl and Carefree of Colorado taking the high road and using primarily acrylics. Rich man…poor man. The choice couldn’t be simpler.

But, not so fast! I’ve worked for RV dealers throughout the west, have had my own mobile RV repair service, I’ve worked on RV’s for the weekend camper as well as the “full timer” who lives in his or her RV permanently. With the passage of time the weekend RV’er will come to learn what the fulltimer discovered long before and that is RV slide out awnings take a beating…that OEM vinyls are substandard and OEM acrylics stretch.

I’m a specialist in the area of slide out awnings. I’ve worked on them, repaired them, replaced them, and now have my own slide out replacement fabric company so what follows is based on my experience.

First, I’m not going to disparage acrylic fabrics. They are good, reasonably tough, and can last a long time. However, I’ve found they have their place. If you drive through any RV park in the winter filled with hundreds of Snowbirds and if you have a little bit of wind you see and hear some slide out awnings “whipping” in the wind and in most cases they will Carefree of Colorado acrylics. Why? Because they are prone to stretching unfortunately in their most vulnerable area, right at the ends where the wind easily gets to them. Another negative of Carefree awnings is the rest of the awning often outlasts Carefree’s stitching…so what good is the best fabric on the planet if the stitching doesn’t live up to its end?

Carefree has switched from Sunbrella, an established name in acrylics, to Recasens, a Spanish company with an established history. Recasens advertise their fabrics do not stretch. Carefree is hesitant in going that far and have matter of factly told me “all fabrics stretch”. I’ve found that indeed is their belief and their policies bear it out as I’ve seen them reject warranty claims on stretched material. Enough said!

Before we go any further we need to take a closer look at RV Slide Out Awnings. Most people do not understand that slide out awnings “take a beating” compared to their patio awning counterparts. One may think they’re “up there and out of the way” but nothing could be further from the truth. When the conditions are “right” they form neat wind tunnels that will drive RV inhabitants “crazy”. Whenever the RV is in use…the slide out awning is in use. (This is not true for the patio awning) and are susceptible to wind, rain, sun, storms, hurricanes, etc. On the other hand any responsible RV’er knows if his patio awning is left “out” in a storm…he may no longer have an awning after the storm has passed.

Both A&E and Carefree (Carefree does use vinyl on some of their awnings) use substandard vinyl fabrics on their slide out awnings. (If you get 3 – 5 years lifespan…you’re doing good). Surprisingly it appears they think no one will notice. OEM vinyls tend to delaminate because of their poor tensile strength and just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse I have a case where A&E sends me an even lighter fabric for a warranty claim. When the customer and I discovered what was obvious we just stood their with our mouths hanging open. He knew it would only be a matter of time before he would be going through this again. So Tough Top Awnings use a heavier and stronger vinyl( a very high tensile strength) which has stood the test of time through out America. Go figure!

In conclusion acrylics have their place. I wouldn’t hesitate to use an acrylic fabric on patio awnings but for my money (and all of my customers) a high grade vinyl may be a better choice for RV slide outs.

What Is Stamped Concrete Paving?

Concrete isn’t just used for construction anymore. While providing a function, it can also serve as an aesthetic enhancement for many types of structures, including floors, patios, driveways, decks, porches, walls, walkways, and more. This artistic use of concrete is known as “decorative concrete”, and is a specialized project that requires an adept skill set, as well the proper inventory of tools and materials, for quality, long-lasting results.

Turning standard concrete into decorative pavement is achieved by altering the concrete either during the pouring process, or after the concrete is finished curing. Common methods and materials include concrete staining, concrete overlays, decorative overlays, concrete countertops, and of course, concrete stamping or “impressing.”

Concrete stamping has gained popularity over the past 50 years, and can be used in a wide variety of residential and commercial applications. And there are many more reasons to choose it for your next property upgrade or remodel! Continue reading to learn more about impressed concrete and how it can benefit your property.

Concrete Stamping

Concrete stamping is simply the process of imprinting concrete with custom textures or colors. The intentions of concrete stamping is to make regular concrete resemble a decorative pattern, style, shape, design, texture, or color. In fact, this is one of the many benefits of stamped concrete.

Not only does stamped concrete deliver long-lasting luster and durability, it is also very cost-effective since it can be constructed to resemble a wide variety of higher-end materials, like brick, wood, stone, slate, bedrock, and more. It can even be designed to resemble things in nature, like sea shells, leaves, fossils, and more. The endless options makes it one of the most desirable and economical renovations and new construction additions of today’s property owner.

It is important to hire a professional home remodeling general contractor or company for impressed concrete services. This is because it is a highly complex and delicate project that requires hands-on experience and extensive knowledge of cement pavement installation and finishing. There are many variables involved in such work, including foundations, water drainage, ground leveling, reinforcement grids, concrete formulation mixtures, and much more.

As for stamping concrete, the installation process generally involves the use of molds. Pre-made molds and stencils are pressed into concrete while the material is still pliable (in plastic state). Once the patterns and textures are applied, the pavement can be finished by adding color and then sealer. Color is added by using one or more of the following products: dry shakes, color hardening agents, powder releases, liquid releases, acid stains, and integral colors.

Notable Benefits

Impressed concrete offers a wide range of benefits in terms of cost, performance, appeal, and value. Here are some of the most notable advantages property owners are happy with:

  • Low Cost
  • Endless Options
  • Long-Lasting
  • Low Maintenance
  • Less Labor Intensive
  • Increases Property Value
