Ideas For Baby Shower Decorations

The baby shower is an essential part of the celebration of a new born child, and it is always joyous to liven up the venue with a variety of baby shower decorations.

The available range is simply vast, and starts with those that you can put outdoors to announce the baby shower location to your guests.

The lawn sign – a great way of singling out the house or venue for the baby shower – as a great decoration, and these are available widely in a large number of different shapes and sizes, all tailored for the boy – in blue – or the girl, in pink of course! Put one in the lawn and nobody will have any trouble finding their ay to the baby shower.

Another great way of advertising the location is to place balloons outside – balloons can be bought especially for the baby shower, in either of the traditional colours and more – and another neat touch is to weight the balloons rather than tie them. Weights come in a wide variety of shapes and styles, and colours and designs, and add an original and innovative touch to any decorative set up.

On the subject of balloons, these can be bought not only in the colours and shapes of a traditional balloon, but also in shapes such as babies themselves, adding an extra interesting twist to the proceedings and an amusing talking point.

The use of banners is always a nice touch, and a large banner hung across the front of the house or venue is a good way of decorating a frontage. Banners can be found in many shapes and sizes, too, and in different fabrics and colours to add to the sense of occasion.

Of course, the new mother needs to be identified, too, and to this end should wear a specially bought sash, one available in numerous designs from a party supplier that immediately marks her out as the mother of the new baby.

The tables should be decorated too, and to this end a series of centrepiece decorations are available, with choices that look like children's building blocks, or dolls or animals, and many more innovative and attractive designs that are intended to add a sense of fun and excitement to the baby shower.

For the cake – a vital part of any baby shower is a celebratory cake – there are any number of decorations and adornments that can be added to make the item look attractive and original, all geared to the boy or girl theme, and many as edible as the cake itself!

Streamers and banners, party suppliers will supply them either on the internet or the high street, also add to a sense of occasion for any baby shower, and the incorporation of games adds to the fun and jollity of the day. Indeed, the popular children's party game – the Piñata – is also being embraced by adults, and can be a great way of adding to the baby shower decorations.

Cleaning Gutters – A Nasty But Necessary Chore

The end of summer means different things to different people. Back to school. The start of football season. The start of foliage season. If you are homeowner, it also means it’s time to start routinely cleaning out your gutters. Pine needles, dead leaves, acorns and twigs are just some of the many forms of debris that can gather in your gutters over the course of the summer. This build up can prevent water from properly draining down your gutters downspouts. Keeping your gutters clean and free from debris is important all year, but especially as fall rolls around and the buildup of debris is hastened by dying tree branches.

Why is it so important to keep gutters clean? Clogged gutters can wreak havoc on your home and property in a number of different ways:

  • Block water runoff – First and foremost, gutters must remain clear simply because clogged gutters can’t properly drain water away from your home’s facade and foundation. When backed-up water gets into your home’s infrastructure, it will eventually corrode the walls, foundation and basement floors, causing costly structural damage.
  • Gutter Corrosion – As debris builds up in your gutters, it forms a corrosive sludge-like material that can actually eat away at the material that comprises your rain gutters. This will eventually weaken and damage gutters, hindering their ability to drain water properly. As water builds up to the point where it spills over the side your gutters, you can expect the dirty sludge to spill over as well, causing unsightly stains on your gutter’s facade and the sides of your home.
  • Preventing Ice Dams – Routinely cleaning gutters in autumn will pay off well into winter when those nasty snow storms – dubbed “snowmageddon” in the Northeast – dump mounds of snow on your roof. Even before the temperature rises back above freezing, the snow starts to melt from the heat emanating out of your home. This heat will melt the snow from the bottom up, sending sheets of water down to your gutters. Clogged gutters will prevent this water from draining. Instead, the runoff freezes, creating damaging overflows of ice called ice dams. Icicles formed from ice dams may be nice to look at, but the additional weight puts tremendous pressure on your gutters, causing them to pull away from the home and in some cases completely break off, ripping away the facia board and causing damage beyond repair.

Preventing Clogged Gutters

Cleaning gutters can be a tedious and sometimes dangerous chore, particularly for elderly homeowners who are not used to getting up on ladders. But as you have read, letting your gutters get clogged is too much of a risk to your home. The easiest way to keep gutters clean is to keep them from ever clogging in the first place. Consider investing in a gutter protection system. The best gutter protection systems are designed to keep debris out of your gutters without preventing the gutters from doing their job of draining water away from your home. If you decide to install gutter protection, look for a product that won’t require replacement year after year, and can withstand the elements in your particular region. And don’t go it alone. Speak with an expert gutter installer, who can help you see beyond the shortcomings of inferior products.

Knowing Your Antique & Vintage Jewelry

To wear and enjoy a beautiful piece of antique and vintage jewelry with a history behind can be a wonderful, exhilarating experience. For many it is a lovingly addicting hobby. The more you collect, the more you want to collect! It's that exciting! But when buying these jewels of yesterday, how can one be certain that what they are buying is truly authentic and not relatively new and / or of it's claimed value? It's always advisable to buy from reputable dealers who guarantee their items plus learning what to look for in a piece. Attend Antique & Collectable Shows, browse Antique Shops and read lots of books to familiarize yourself with period styles and their findings.

When looking at a piece, examine it carefully both front and back. An genuinely old piece will have all the ingredients to confirm its authenticity. Many jewelry styles do tend to overlap so always check the entire piece for clues. Is the piece signed, hallmarked? Surprisingly enough a lot of antique jewelry was marked in the most unusual of places so check along the edges, inside of the bale, the pin stem and even on the back of the pin stem! You'll be amazed at what you could find and where you will find it. Suddenly a piece of jewelry that you thought was newer or made of silver plate or gold plate now may be seen in a different light as genuine antique silver or gold and have a lot of value!

A lot of old jewelry such as Victorian Jewelry was not marked. So now what? A Victorian brooch with a long pin stem extending outward is a good indication that it's early Victorian while a shorter one is of a later date. The "C" clasp is another indication that the piece is old. Remember that there are always exceptions to the rules since the "C" clasp was also used later on in Europe so take every detail into account to come to your full conclusion. Look at the hinge and the clasp of a brooch, bracelet, necklace, etc .. Does it look like a clasp used today or does it seem a bit different to you? Compare new pieces to old pieces. Does the jewelry have a brass spring ring clasp from the 1930s or a shiny gold plate clasp? Are the findings on a piece consistent with the design of that era? Those small differences could answer your questions and drastically influence the value of a piece. The tube hinge was generally used until the 1890s where the safety catch clasp became popular in the Art Deco 1920s period. Over the years the appearance of the safety catch clasp has changed so it's good to recognize the old from the new. Many clasps on old jewelry such as pins broke in time so replacement ones were soldered onto the back. All better Jewelry is soldered at some place but if the piece has raised pads soldered to the back of the Brooch where the clasp is attached then it is a replacement clasp.

Another good clue to dating a piece and determining the value of Antique and Vintage Jewelry is to look at the metal content where there might be some underneath wear, usually in back where it would rub against the clothing. Genuine Gold and Silver, even if it has wear, will not show a base metal underneath since it continues all the way through. Many costume pieces from the nineteenth century and into the Art Deco period were made of gold and / or silver over base metals such as gold over brass, silver over brass, silver over copper, gold over copper, etc. That's one way of knowing the piece is at least 60 years old and more. During the war years of the 1940s there was a shortage of base metals where it affected the jewelry industry so sterling silver was substituted. If you see a marking such as "1/20 12K on Sterling" then 1/5 of the piece is 12K gold and is likely to be from 1942 to 1945. Vintage Bakelite which is a Polymeric Plastic invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1907, became popular in jewelry design during the hardships of World War II also. There are several tests in determining Authentic Antique and Vintage Bakelite Jewelry using Formula 409, Hot Water, Simichrome Polish and a Q-Tip. Still some Bakelite such as Black Bakelite may not test positive. Since Bakelite is either cast or molded it would not have a seam line anywhere and the workmanship should look hand carved and not be crudely executed as if a stamp was used. On Vintage Bakelite brooches, the clasp would be embedded into the piece.

Fine Jewelry containing Diamonds or Precious Stones such as Rubies, Emeralds and Sapphires are either bezel-set, inset or set with prongs and will always have open-backs for maximum brightness. Air bubbles seen in stones is a clue right off that the piece is glass. Marcasites which were substituted for diamonds as early as the 1700s, regained it's popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. A higher valued marcasite piece would have better workmanship where each marcasite would be set with tiny prongs or beads versus glued in ones and because of this the stones will stay in place longer. This is also true for Rhinestones in Vintage Costume Jewelry where prong set ones are valued higher than glued in ones.

These are just some of the many tips to knowing your Jewelry. It's so helpful to learn what to look for when buying Antique and Vintage Jewelry which also can be as much fun as wearing and collecting it! Knowledge is definitely Jewelry Golden!

What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a web security protocol developed by Netscape for establishing an encrypted connection between a web server and a browser. SSL crytography makes use of two keys to for data encryption. The public key, used to encrypt information, is known to everyone and the private key, known only to the intended recipient of the message, is used to decipher it.

SSL is an industry standard approved by the Internet Enginerring Task Force (IETF) and is commonly used by websites which need to collect confidential information like credit card information from its users. By convention, web addresses that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http :. Most web browsers provide an indicator, usually a lock icon in the status bar, to let users know when they are protected by an SSL encrypted session. Clicking on the icon displays the SSL Certificate and the details about it. True 128-bit SSL certificates provides the strongest SSL encryption available.

An SSL Certificate is issued by a trusted source, known as the Certificate Authority. When a browser connects to an SSL server, it requests for a digital Certificate of Authority from the server. This digital certificate positively authenticates the server's identity to ensure you are not be transmitting private data to a hacker or imposter site.

The browser checks that it has not expired, it has been issued by a trusted Certification Authority, and that it is being used by the website for which it has been issued. If there is a problem with the certificate, even if it is simply out of date, your browser will display a message window to notify you of the problem, allowing you to terminate the session or continue at your own risk.

Once the handshake is completed, your browser will automatically encrypt all information that you send to the site, before it leaves your computer. Encrypted information is unreadable en route. Once the information arrives at the secure server, it is decrypted using a secret key. If the server sends information back to you, that information is also encrypted at the server's end before being sent. Your browser will decrypt it for you automatically upon arrival, then display it as it normally does.

How to Dig Out a Fence Post and Concrete Footing Using Hand Tools

Confirm Digging is the Only Option

To begin, evaluate the condition of the post and the concrete. Intact posts are a significant benefit and will make removal much easier. Posts in good condition that are still sound make their removal much easier. Also evaluate the concrete base (if present) – is it still solid or is it cracked/crumbling?

If the post is broken or the concrete is cracked there may be no other way than to dig out the post and concrete base, but before resorting to heavy manual labor try the Wood Post Puller method – its biggest strength is that is works in synergy with all of the lifting and digging methods to improve effectiveness and can easily remove posts and concrete bases that stymie other techniques.

After you determine there is no other way than to dig out the post, the following instructions will make this difficult task as easy as possible:

How Deep and How Much to Dig?

Dig a hole next to the existing post and concrete base approximately the same size as the post and base – don’t dig all the way around the post and don’t dig a hole that is larger than the post – it is just extra work digging and then re-filling the hole after you are done.

Do you know how deep the post is buried? The following are typical starting lengths before posts are set in the ground:

  • 4×4 wood posts will typically be 8 feet long set 3 feet in the ground
  • Metal t-posts will typically be 7 feet long set 2 feet in the ground
  • Galvanized posts are typically 8 feet long set 3 feet in the ground

If you are not sure, you can also measure the height of the post that is above ground (or the length of the piece if it is broken off) and approximate the length that is buried. Dig your hole at least 75% as deep as the post that is buried – for example, a typical wood post will be buried in the ground 3 feet or 36 inches, so dig down to a depth of at least 27 inches (36 x 0.75 = 27).

Digging Technique

Start the hole using a round point spade to get through any turf, roots, or other surface debris. As the hole gets deeper, a trench spade (also referred to as a ditch spade or trenching tool) will make the digging easier until you are down to about 16-24 inches. With shovels and spades you are using your legs and body weight to loosen the soil for removal – keep going until the hole becomes too tall and narrow to gain leverage at the bottom and then switch to the next stage.

This is where you transition to tools that are driven by arm power – the post hole digger and digging bar.

Tip – Choose a post hole digger that is smaller and lighter – unless you are a weightlifter type, the large heavy post hole diggers with the fiberglass handles will wear you out – the smaller, lighter post hole diggers are more maneuverable and will be more effective for most people, even if they sacrifice some reach.

Tip – Use a digging bar – a San Angelo bar is designed to make digging easier – it has a chisel head to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole and to trim the sides of the hole, the other end of the bar is a point for breaking up difficult soil. Other types of digging bars will include a tamper head on one end for packing loose soil. Look for a bar that is high quality heat treated carbon steel – no need to pay extra for a brand name, digging bars are available at discount supply stores for approximately $25.

After you have reached the target depth, use the chisel head on the digging bar to clear out any soil remaining between the post and your hole. As you dig a round hole next to a round post foundation there will be a ridge that should be removed.

Removing the Post

Now you begin the removal process, the general concept is to tip the post into the hole you just dug. Start by simply pushing the top of the post towards the hole, it may break free from the soil and slide into the hole – then you can insert the pry bars underneath the post and concrete and lift it out. If the post doesn’t move, try jamming the pry bar into the ground next to the post or concrete footing on the side opposite the hole and pry it towards the hole. To increase the leverage from the pry bar, use a scrap piece of 2×4 or other wood on the ground to form a fulcrum and prevent the pry bar from sinking into the ground.

If the post still won’t move, use the digging bar to expand the hole around the circumference of the post footing by digging sideways. Continue prying the post out and enlarging the hole around the post until it breaks free and tips over into the hole. The critical part is to break the post loose – sometimes a few well-placed hits with a sledgehammer are needed for persuasion to get the post moving – after it moves even a fraction of an inch the war is won and the post will come out.

Glass Pendant Light Fixtures

Glass pendant light fixtures make a wonderful addition to a current lighting scheme or a great focal point to base a new design on. They are great for use in a small area or in a larger area for use as focused task lighting. One thing is for sure, no matter where you install a glass pendant light, it is sure to become the focal point of the room.

When selecting glass pendant light fixtures you can choose from single glass pendants and multiple glass pendant designs. You can find single glass pendants in many different styles from the Tiffany to something more modern. A multiple pendant is going to have a central globe design with multiple additional lights hanging from it. The number of additional lights can range from 3 to 25. Singles are great for focused task lighting, while multi-pendants can provide sufficient illumination for a larger space.

Pendant lights are great for use in kitchens, especially over kitchen islands where they will be out of the way of traffic and provide focused lighting on the island workstation. Many people like to install them in dark corners as well. You can install a multiple pendant over your kitchen or dining room table as a sole source of illumination. This will not only provide ample light, but also a wonderful focal point and conversation piece. Pendants are great in the kitchen because they provide a way to break up the typical horizontal effect of counters, cabinets, and appliances.

Deciding to use glass pendant light fixtures in your design is only the first step. The fun part is yet to come when you will start to browse the literally thousands of designs available. There is a style and design for everyone, which is part of the reason why these lights are so popular.

Why Install a Radiant Barrier in a Cold Climate?

Radiant barriers are a cost effective and easy way to reduce Winter heating costs and make your home more comfortable. Historically, radiant barriers have been popular in hot climates. However, the use of radiant barriers in colder climates is rapidly gaining popularity.

Your home is basically just a big box that you want to keep the air inside a certain temperature. Heat always moves from warm to cold. So, in the Winter heat is flowing OUT of your home. The amount of heat flow is determined by the difference in temperature inside and outside and the thermal properties (insulation) of the structure.

Your walls usually do a pretty good job of reducing the heat loss. Walls have and inner air barrier (sheetrock), and outer air barrier (sheathing) and typically filled with wood studs and insulation to minimize air infiltration and heat flow outward.

The problem occurs in the attic. We still have the inner air barrier (sheetrock ceiling) and insulation (usually blown-in fiberglass or cellulose). However, most homes do not have an outer air barrier on top of the insulation above the ceiling. This is like taking the outer layer off a Winter jacket. With a little wind, the jacket becomes almost useless due to air movement inside the insulation.

So, how does a radiant barrier help in cold climates? Two ways: 1) Reduction of radiant heat loss & 2) Minimizing convective air looping inside the insulation.

By laying radiant barrier foil across your existing attic insulation, it works off the emissivity quality of pure aluminum. This is similar to wrapping a potato with foil to keep it hot. The stored heat in the potato is not easily converted to radiant energy.

The other benefit of installing a radiant barrier in cold climates is to reduce convective airflow inside the insulation. In a standard attic, the insulation is “Open” to the cold air inside the attic. The effectiveness of the insulation is greatly reduced since cold air is heavy and dense. The cold air will “fall” down through the attic insulation. Warm air close to the ceiling will rise and the result is a ‘convective loop” of air pumping through the attic insulation.

By installing radiant barrier over attic insulation it acts similar to the outer wind layer on a jacket. Air movement will be reduced resulting in higher r-value performance of your home insulation.
It is important to use a perforated radiant barrier to allow moisture in its vapor form to pass. Otherwise moisture can condense on the bottom of the foil and lead to wet insulation, mold and possibly wood rot. Make sure the ceiling is also sealed airtight. Holes from lights, and other fixtures can leave a path for warm-moist air to get into the insulation. This can result in moisture inside the attic insulation. It cannot be emphasized enough to use a perforated radiant barrier attic foil in cold climates.

Comfort is another reason to install a radiant barrier. By keeping heat from escaping, your home will feel consistently warmer from room to room. This will reduce your need for heating and save you money on your Winter heating bills.

Winter is the best time to install a radiant barrier either as a do-it-yourself project or to hire a professional installer.

Painting Over Existing Wallpaper

If you have ever removed wallpaper in the past you know that it can be a nightmare. It never simply peels off like it does on those home improvement shows. There are many products available to you to supposedly make it easier. You can buy special tools to score the wallpaper, wallpaper removal chemicals and even special scrapers. They help a little but usually do not work as well as advertised. Even a small room can take hours, even days to strip the wallpaper from. What choice do you have though, it must be done if you are going to paint that room. Well maybe not, you might just be able to paint over that wallpaper.

If you decide you want to try to paint over wallpaper you must first make a careful examination of it. Look for areas that are coming loose, bubbling up or torn. All of these areas must be repaired if you are going to paint over it so if it is damaged in many areas, you should pull it down. If it is only damaged in a few areas, we can continue.

First you need to repair the damaged areas. Glue any loose sections of the wallpaper and make sure that all of it is firmly attached to the wall. Now mix up some joint compound and apply it to the seams. This will keep the edges from peeling in the future and give you a smooth surface on which to texture. If the wallpaper itself is textured, you will need to float the entire wall with joint compound. After the joint compound dries, you should sand it lightly to smooth the surface. Let the surface dry thoroughly before continuing.

If your old wallpaper had a dark color, you should apply a sealer now. The sealer will keep the strong color from bleeding through in the future. After you have sealed the wall, you can begin texturing. You have a variety of different texturing options available to you. Visit your home improvement store's paint department for examples of texture. Let the texture dry thoroughly after applying it.

Now it is time to paint. A quality house the Choose paint and the prepare your house for painting . Paint your walls and you are done. That's all there is to it. It is still quite a bit of work but painting over wallpaper can save you hours of tedious scraping and peeling. The most important thing is to make sure that your wallpaper is in good enough condition to paint over. If you have any doubts, you are probably better off removing it.

Chairs and Weight Limits

Just about every person in the entire world owns at least one chair. Even if it’s an upside-down milk crate, we have to sit somewhere, right? I happen to be a person who thinks a lot about chairs. I like the way they look, the amazing varieties in which they are made, the way designs cross cultures and time.

I’d like to take a moment to discuss an issue that’s been on my mind lately. It might seem a bit odd or off-center, but I think you’ll see the logic behind my concerns.

For good or ill, we live in a very litigious society. People sue each other all the time, whether they have good cause or not. Millions, possibly billions of dollars are spent every year paying legal fees and settlements for these lawsuits, especially in personal injury cases. I guess a lot of people see these cases as get-rich-quick schemes. Sadly, they’re right.

Right about now, you might be wondering what all of these concerns have to do with chairs. Well, I’ll tell you.

Along with the increasing number of lawsuits, another unfortunate trend on the rise is obesity. More and more Americans are crossing the line between being healthy and being overweight, and the trend is getting worse. Fatter people are heavier people. I know enough about chairs to say that not every chair is built to hold very large person. In fact, many common chairs are not safe for people over a certain weight.

By not acknowledging this, you are putting yourself at risk for being sued by a person who comes to your property and hurts himself when he sits in one of your chairs and it buckles underneath him.

Here are two examples of types of chairs that are most susceptible to this problem.

Anything suspended: Chairs that hang from the ceiling, hammocks, or porch-swing like chairs are particularly high risk. If you purchase one of these chairs, be sure to check the packaging for the weight limit. You might be surprised at how low it is! Take heed of the number, and stick to it. You might regret it if you don’t. If you have built your own hammock or swing, use good judgment and be sure your guests don’t overload it.

Folding chairs: That rickety folding lounge chair you’ve had since 1972 may be a loved favorite, but it can pose a risk. Many low-cost folding chairs [] (especially beach chairs, camping chairs and other outdoor chairs) are not very sturdy and can easily buckle under unexpectedly. If you have old beach chairs, you might want to invest in some new ones before you have your hefty in-laws over for a backyard barbeque. Also, many indoor-use folding chairs can break easily when their weight limits are exceeded. Again, older, cheaply manufactured chairs are most susceptible.

Most wood, metal or hybrid wood-and-metal chairs are sturdy and have high weight limits. If you primarily use these types of chairs then you probably have little to worry about. Even so, whenever you buy new chairs of any kind, be sure and know their weight limits. Adhere to them, and you and your guests will always sit in comfort and safety.

Asian Walnut Hardwood Flooring – Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Asian Walnut wood flooring is one of the most unique hardwood species available in the market today. Often referred to as Acacia, this walnut hard wood floor is harvested obviously in Asia. Asian Walnut wood floors have become increasingly popular in the last few years. Although Oak is still the #1 seller in wood flooring, exotic species such as Asian Walnut and Brazilian Cherry have made long strides towards becoming main stream wood flooring choices. If you are looking for a very distinct floor that is considered a center piece for your room or home, Asian Walnut hardwood flooring is certainly worth considering. There are several things you need to know when considering the exotic Asian, Acacia Walnut species of floors.

Most Asian Walnut floors are offered with a factory finish. Factory finished means the factory has applied multiple, protective coats of either polyurethane, aluminum oxide, or a combination of both. These finishes protect the floor from minor scratches and wear. Of course any wood floor can be scratched, but the current factory finishes are much better than 20 years ago. The best option is to find an Acacia wood floor with either an aluminum oxide or combination of aluminum oxide and polyurethane finish. If you buy unfinished, Asian Walnut wood flooring it will have to have the protective finish applied after installation in your home. This type of in home finish is not very comparable to a factory finish as a installer cannot duplicate the heat and pressure to the boards the same as a manufacturing process in a factory.

Asian Walnut is usually available in 3 colors or stains. Natural is the most common color. Actually, natural is unstained but has a protective finish. The natural Asian Walnut boards will have a wide variety of color ranges from dark to light. The darker colors will be slightly more predominant though. Another color commonly sold is Cinnamon or sometimes called Cherry. This color has slight, red hues to give a classy, semi formal look. Cinnamon is a very rich, deep stain. The final color you may find is a stain sometimes called Smoke or Toffee. Smoke stained, Asian Walnut floors have a very similar appearance to another species, Black Walnut. The stain isn’t actually black or extremely dark, but does have a deeper, darker hue than the other colors you will find. A Smoke stain, Asian Walnut is a nice alternative to it’s cousin, Black Walnut as the Asian version may be priced slightly less.

A tip to remember when getting samples of Asian Walnut hardwood flooring is to ask for two samples. Asian Walnut, or Acacia wood has largely varying characteristics between every board. Two samples will give you a much better idea of what the floor is going to look like. Another hint is once you have decided to go with a specific color or dealer, buy one box first. When you get the box, loose lay it out in an area of your home to make sure you like the color and style. You may or may not be able to send the box back to the dealer, but, your initial investment will be much less than if you had purchased the entire job. If for some reason you don’t like the Acacia hardwood floor, you are only out about $100 or so instead of thousands.

A few design and construction notes to consider are the characteristics of Asian Walnut wood flooring. Almost always, Asian Walnut is a 3/4″ solid board which is designed for a nail down installation. The Asian species of Walnut wood flooring also has a distinct grain pattern. Large swirls and a loose grain structure give Asian Walnut one of the most unique looks of any wood species sold today. This unique grain pattern works very well in large rooms and areas. Another characteristic of Asian Walnut, or Acaica hardwood flooring is the board lengths typically are not longer than about 4 feet. The tree itself is not a tall growing tree, so the boards tend to be slightly shorter than traditional walnut trees. A final note on Asian, Acacia Walnut properties is that it rates very highly on the Janka Scale coming in around 2,300. The Janka scale is a measurement used to determine the hardness of a hardwood species. The higher the number, the harder the wood. At 2,300, Asian Walnut is much harder than common Oaks which are around 1,300 or so. As a reminder, any hardwood floor can be dented, scratched, scuffed etc, however, the harder the wood, the tougher it is.

Know About the Two Basic Types of Fuel Pumps

A fuel pump is an essential component in an automobile’s fuel delivery system. In most of the vehicles we find engine located at the front-end of the vehicle and the fuel tank at the other end. The main function of fuel pump is to draw the fuel from the storage tank and force it to the engine.

Though some old designs do not require fuel pump, for many of the latest non-gravity based engines it is an essential component and is often termed as ‘the heart of the vehicle’. In this article, we will discuss about the two basic types and the advantages of one over the other.

Types of fuel pumps

• Mechanical: There are two types of mechanical pumps – old style mechanical pumps and new style GDI pumps.

o Old style mechanical: They can be found in few old model engines that have carburetors. The pump draws fuel from the tank and pushes it to the carburetor when the engine is running. Their output pressure is quite low – 4 to 10 psi. These low pressure pumps are often mounted on the top of the engine.

o New style high pressure GDI pumps – The advent of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) systems which can deliver fuel at very high pressures has given rise to the high pressure fuel pumps driven by camshaft. These high pressure pumps can generate fuel pressure up to 2,000 psi and higher, which help the GDI engines to achieve improved fuel economy with high power output and reduced emissions.

• Electrical: Electrical fuel pumps are used in fuel injection systems (introduced prior to GDI system) to pump the fuel from the fuel tank to the injectors. They typically deliver fuel at 30-85 psi to the fuel injector, which then opens and sprays the pressurized fuel into the engine. Unlike old mechanical, electrical fuel pump is typically located in or near the fuel tank.

Today, a variety of electrical fuel pumps meant for various applications are available in the market, such as:

o Roller vane pumps: They are positive displacement pumps that consist of vanes/blades to push the gas through the pump. They are often used in large trucks and also in diesel powered cars.

o Turbine pumps: They are not positive-displacement pumps. They have an impeller ring attached to the motor, which has blades to push the fuel through the pump. This pump runs smoothly and quietly and is mostly used in the latest vehicles.

o Gerotor pump: This is another positive displacement pump which uses an offset rotor to deliver the fuel through the pump. They are used in passenger vehicles.

o Solenoid pumps: They use a piston which is activated by an electromagnetic coil to generate pressure and thus help the fuel flow. They have many applications and are considered as universal type of electric fuel pumps.

o Peripheral pumps: They have impellers which pull and push the fuel. This is the standard type of pump used in many vehicles. Though they work much quieter, they produce limited pressure.

o Brushless pumps: These pumps have a fuel inlet and outlet between which a fuel mechanism is positioned with an armature to pump the fuel under pressure from the inlet to the outlet. Brushless pumps are generally used in diesel engines.

• Advantages of electric over mechanical fuel pumps

o Smaller and lighter: Compared to the old style low pressure mechanical fuel pumps, electrical ones are small in size and light in weight. This compact size allows them to easily accommodate inside the fuel tank. Moreover, usage of small devices reduces the electrical load and thus, controls the fuel consumption. However, electrical pumps are bit expensive.

o Ability to deliver fuel at higher pressures: Old styled mechanical pumps deliver pressure of only 4 – 10 psi, electric pumps can deliver gasoline at pressures typically between 30 – 85 psi. Fuel injection system requires the gasoline to be delivered at high pressures. However, new style high pressure mechanical pumps used in GDI systems can deliver greater pressures as high as 2,000-3,000 psi.

o Improved safety: Fuel injection systems have a special device called Electronic Control Unit (ECU) which controls power to the fuel pump. It is specially programmed to shut off the fuel pump if it detects low or zero pressure. This safety feature avoids the risk of fire in engine compartment in case of collisions or terminal failures. As mechanical fuel pumps lack this feature, electrical pumps are considered to be safer.

o Highly durable: The presence of pump inside the tank allows it to get cooled by the flow of the gasoline. This prevents overheating of the electric pump, which is an issue with mechanical pumps (as they are mounted on the top of the engine), and thus increases the life of the electric pump.

o Alleviating vapor lock issues: If the vehicle is left unused for some time, the liquid fuel inside the tank changes to gaseous state and thus disrupts the operation of fuel pump causing loss of feed pressure to the carburetor. Vapor locks are quite common in old fuel systems with low pressure mechanical pumps. But in case of electric pumps, as the pump is in the interior of the tank and runs cooler, the pump pressurizes the fuel lines and prevents vapor locks.

With the increased use of aftermarket fuel pumps many companies have started manufacturing various varieties. Purchasing them from a reputed and experienced manufacturer is always a good idea.
