The Way an Indirect Cold Water System Works

The draw-off point in an indirect system is fed indirectly from the cold water storage cistern, one outlet being fed directly from the supply pipe. Recommended Method:

1. As in all cleaning procedures, the first step is to gather the recommended janitorial equipment together and bring to the area to be cleaned.

2. Prior to using the mop head, it should be pre-treated with the dust mop treatment – at least 8 hours or more in advance. One effective method is to apply the treatment to the mop head and place in a plastic trash bag and tie the bag. This allows the treatment to be absorbed by the fibers in the mop head and will reduce or eliminate “streaking” when mopping the floor.

3. Begin mopping by placing the edge of the dust mop head against the baseboard and push it the length of the corridor out in front of the dust mop.

5. Pick up the pile using the counter brush and dust pan.

6. Use the scraper/ putty  knife blade to remove gum or other materials on the floor as needed.

7. After the days’ work is done, the dust mop can be brushed and stored on a hanger so the mop head is not resting on the floor.

In other facilities, you may re-use the mop head until it appears soiled. Then it should be replaced. Since bacteria can grow in dust mop heads, it is suggested that you do not try to continue using a mop head for more than a few days.

Fencing Officiating – Refereeing Dry Bouts I

The dry bout (a bout fenced without electrical scoring equipment) represents a significant challenge for the referee and judges: how do you both fairly and accurately assess the results of the fencing so that the better fencer in the bout wins? The answer is a mix of several factors, including organization with well defined responsibilities, training, and the ability to recognize fencing actions and hits. This series of articles examines the referee’s role in the bout.

In the not so distant past, referees were called Directors or Presidents of the Jury. Both of these titles capture what the referee does in ways different than the modern title of referee. Director implies that the official directs and controls the operation of the contest, an organizational role with clear responsibilities. President of the Jury acknowledges the role of the referee as part of a voting body that recognizes the actions, interprets them, and sees the hits. These two roles are critical to what the referee does and to the efficient, accurate, and fair conduct of the bout.

When we think about the role of the referee, it is vital to understand that the bout is about the fencers, not the officials. The referee and judges create a structure for determining who wins, but that structure should never obscure or diminish the actual combat between two fencers. The officials facilitate, not dominate.

The referee in the dry bout manages a team of 5 people, himself as referee, and four judges. Two judges stationed behind the fencer on the referee’s left watch the target of the fencer on the right to observe whether a hit arrives. The referee watches both fencers’ targets for hits, and determines which fencer has the right of way (in foil or sabre) or which fencer arrives first on target (in epee).

To do this effectively the referee must move with the action so that the two fencers remain centered in front of him or her. Ideally the referee should be as far from the strip as practical – 10 feet is a good starting point. This distance allows the referee to easily see movement on the part of both fencers, key to establishing priority of actions. The reality in many clubs and venues is that as many strips as possible are packed into as small a space as possible, with the result that referees work within 3 feet of the strip edge. Not only is this unsafe, but it virtually ensures that the referee’s calls often will be influenced by whichever fencer moves in the restricted field of view.

Two other officials complete the set of officials for a strip, although the functions of one or both are often subsumed into the job of the referee. A timekeeper runs the clock of fencing time used between the commands “fence” and “halt.” A score keeper maintains the score sheet, recording touches awarded and any warnings or penalties. If at all possible, these two positions should be staffed, as the added burden detracts from the referee’s ability to manage the activity on the strip.

The referee thus has a responsible job. A good referee with competent judges creates the conditions that allow good fencing with the fencers being satisfied that they have had a fair chance to win. Bad officiating unfortunately creates the opposite, bad fencing and frustrated fencers. Every referee has a moral obligation to continually work to better understand the job and to give the fencers the bout they deserve.

Fencing Drills – Tactical Analysis Drills

One of the challenges of developing fencers is building their ability to recognize their opponents’ actions and use that knowledge to gain a tactical advantage. The fencer who has this ability is at a significant advantage in the bout, but it is one that many fencers struggle to develop. The Tactical Analysis Drill may provide a tool you, as a coach, can use to help in that struggle.

The Tactical Analysis Drill develops the fencer’s ability to recognize and act on opponent actions by presenting the fencer with a series of actions and requiring the fencer to predict what the next action will be. This drill can be done as a coach and fencer drill in a queue drill format at any level. It could be done as a paired drill with two fencers, but that format requires higher intermediate or advanced participants.

(1) The coach identifies a set of related actions the fencer is capable of performing well. At the same time the coach identifies three cues that reflect reasonable responses that might be expected of an opponent the fencer will face. In my experience three actions works well as a set – two actions do not provide sufficient variety, and four or more actions make the drill cycle too long.

(2) The coach (or fencer partner) decides whether the skills will be presented randomly or only one skill will be presented. For example, the three actions the student will be expected to perform might be (a) change of engagement, straight thrust if the opponent does not react, (b) change of engagement, disengage against lateral pressure on the blade, and (c) change of engagement, counterdisengage against the attempt to change the engagement to its original line.

(3) The fencer and the coach do three actions. In our example, if the coach wishes the fencer to use all three actions the coach would randomly respond to the change of engagement with no reaction, lateral pressure on the blade, or an attempt to change the engagement. The coach uses all three cues or only one cue three times.

(4) The student has to identify whether this is a series of all the actions the opponent knows (three different random actions) or if the opponent is repeating one favorite action (three of the same one of any of the action set). This identification has to be complete by the end of the second action.

(5) The student reacts appropriately to each cue.

(6) At the end of the first action, if the student is willing to take risks, he or she can assess the probability of the next action and commit fully to the counteraction. This requires significant risk, for the student does not know whether the cycle is three of the same or three different actions, leading to a fairly complicated set of mental mathematics to determine the best course of action. Alternatively, the student can wait for the second action to commit fully.

(7) At the end of the second action, the student should know with certainty what the next action will be and commit fully to the appropriate counter.

The Tactical Analysis Drill does not force the students to make and stay with a choice to the degree required in the Analysis/Commitment Drill. Its strength is in being able to determine the opponent’s scenario and in recognizing a number of different actions and combinations of actions.

This drill forces the student to fence eyes open for the first and second actions, and helps to train the student to recognize specific actions and sequences of actions. It also helps to develop the ability to assess probabilities of specific opponent courses of action. By concentrating on the identification and prediction function in the drill the student starts to develop the skills of observation needed to be a successful competitive athlete.

Arc Welding Basics

You should not look directly into the arc without proper eye protection. However, the visible light is not the only danger. The arc gives of infrared and ultraviolet light that is invisible to the naked eye. This is why welders wear auto darkening welding helmets. These helmets will automatically darken when the arc is struck to shield the welders eyes from the bright visible and the lens filter is designed to keep out infrared and ultraviolet at all times whether the lens is darkened or not. Welders also put up welding blankets or shields to protect other people in the work area that may not have proper eye protection.

Despite these hazards arc welding is a safe and reliable method for fusing metal together and with some practice anyone can become competent enough for basic welding.

What is a Bow Stabilizer?

When you think of archery I would suggest most of us imagine the equipment as simplicity itself – a  bow  and an arrow. To a certain extent this is true. If you simply want to take an arrow and fire it from a  bow , these are the basic pieces of equipment you will need. A stabilizer serves two main functions. The first is to hold the  bow  steady and more stable, hence its name. From this comes a secondary advantage with using a stabilizer and this is that it reduces hand shock and vibration. I’ll explain why this is important in just a moment.

Firstly we should examine what a stabilizer is made of so we can understand how it works. In the past they were metal tubes. Metal is a rather heavy material and although you want to add some weight, because this is what keeps the  bow  stable, you don’t want to make it too heavy. So these days the body of the stabilizer is made from carbon or AMS plastics. Carbon is ideal because it is a durable, lightweight material that is also rigid enough to perform properly.

A dampening device allows the stabilizer to perform its second function, that of reducing the vibration through the  bow  from the force of releasing the bowstring. The dampening device will most likely be made of rubber although other vibration absorbent materials may be used. By positioning the dampening material away from the end of the  bow  their effectiveness will be maximised.

The final device you will find on a stabilizer is a weight which will sit right on the end after the rubber material. The purpose of the weight is to counterbalance the  bow  and it is this that keeps the  bow  stable when it is being shot. With the weight sitting at the front of the  bow  consistency in aiming the  bow  is made easier.

When deciding on which stabilizer to use you will find that they come in a variety of lengths. The length of the stabilizer you need will depend considerably on the type of archery you plan on doing. In general, the longer the stabilizer you use the more steady your  bow  will be and consequently, the more accurate you are likely to be. Target archers use long stabilizers. Bowhunters, on the other hand, use shorter stabilizers because of the conditions under which they will be carrying and firing their  bow .

The shorter frames of hunting  bows  mean that an overly long stabilizer is not required. Considering some of the terrain you may be covering, long pieces protruding from the  bow  would be more likely to snag and hinder progress as well as make more noise. Similarly, any extra weight on the  bow  would be accentuated the longer the  bow  has to be carried to the point where it would become extremely tiring.

Finally, we return to the importance of reducing vibration. Any vibration experienced by the  bow  is going to be expressed as noise and when you are bowhunting noise is one of your worst enemies. Vibration will also cause movement in other components on your  bow  which will inevitably affect accuracy.

Not only is it important for your  bow  to be fitted with a stabilizer but it is important to have one that suits you, your  bow  and the type of shooting you’re going to use it for. Take a measured approach, look for quality and temper your decision with thoughts on suitability and you will be sure to be shooting quietly and accurately.
