Ductless Portable Air Conditioner – Comparison With A Ductless Split Unit

Spring and summer are the best times to own an air conditioner and the fall is the best time to buy it, considering all the end-of-season specials and installation rebates. And after the scorching heat of this summer, many are decided they will be better equipped next summer. But what air conditioning unit to buy? In this article, we will present three major advantages of ductless split unit air conditioner as compared with ductless portable air conditioner. By the time you finish reading, you should be better equipped to see which type of room AC might best suit you. The three major advantages of split units are: Minimal space requirement, Higher cooling efficiency, and Low noise.

Minimal space requirement

Ductless split units take up very little space in the room. The inside unit of the split AC system is either installed on the wall, such as above the window, or is recessed in the   ceiling , or is  suspended  from the  ceiling . In either case, the ductless split unit, wall mounted or otherwise, is slim and will not take up any useful space in the room. In contrast, a ductless portable air conditioner will be much bulkier, it will take up valuable floor space, and its air tubes will meander across a part of the room to the window opening. As the tubes can not be bent arbitrarily tightly, the portable unit may be positioned as far as a few yards away from the window, taking up precious floor space.

Higher cooling efficiency

Ductless mini split systems clearly separate the cooling part inside the room from the heating part outside. Therefore, there is never a need to put one in direct contact with the other. In contrast, the usually very hot exhaust air tube of the ductless portable AC is still placed inside the room, heating that part of the room. The portable, single piece unit has to work harder to keep the room cool. In other words, a portable AC is less energy efficient. This is reflected in the EER and SEER, seasonal energy efficiency ratings of portable air conditioners, as well as in their lack of the EPA-sponsored EnergyStar label. The cooling efficiency of recirculating portable AC types, or dual hose portable air conditioners, is better than the cooling efficiency of single hose air conditioners, but still incomparable to that of the ductless split unit systems.

Low noise

As the louder, compressing part in the split unit ductless air conditioner is placed outside the house, so is most of its noise. If you are needing air conditioning in the bedroom, the noise can be a problem. In contrast, a ductless portable air conditioner’s operation will be quite a bit noisier as both the compressing part and the expanding, or the evaporating part are located in the single, indoor unit.

Best Laminate Flooring

Best laminate flooring is the one that satisfies all the needs of individuals. Best flooring requires low maintenance, and easy installation. It lasts for longer periods without losing its luster and beauty.

Best laminate flooring comes in a wide variety of plank widths and square tile sizes to match the dimensions of different floors. It is available in wood, ceramic tiles, and stone designs in varying colors and patterns. Some of the best laminate flooring does not need glue to keep planks or tiles in position. Some other best flooring requires glue to hold planks and tiles. There is also pre-glued flooring that needs less moisture to activate the glue.

For best laminate flooring in bathrooms and kitchens, it is important to check the quality and thickness of the core while purchasing. As thickness increases, core becomes more stable and less vulnerable. Laminate cores of better quality come with water repellent features. Laminates with paraffin wax impregnated joints are good on bathroom surfaces. The paraffin wax protects the core from water that may cause damage to the flooring.

Other factors such as prices, design choices, ratings, and brands are to be considered while buying the best laminate flooring that suits the individual’s life style and budget. The price of good quality flooring can vary from 1.50 to 3 dollars per square foot. Price can go above 6 dollars a square foot also. This great variation in price is because of the fact that most individuals cannot afford the best available flooring.

Best laminate flooring can be bought from online stores or home improvement stores. One has to select the best flooring without sacrificing quality. Most stores have warranty options. For the best flooring, individuals can even ask for protection against staining, fading, and moisture damage during warranty period.

Heat Pump Prices

Heat  pumps  are energy efficient devices used for both heating and cooling a home or small area. They are great in that they use very little electricity and produce minimal emissions in comparison to traditional furnaces and home heating devices. People often wonder about heat  pump  prices when they are considering having one installed in their home.

The initial investment into a heat  pump  can be quite costly. The prices are typically higher than the air-source  pumps . An average size heat  pump  will cost approximately twenty-five hundred dollars per ton of capacity. An average house would need a heat  pump  of approximately three tons. This means that you would expect to pay approximately seventy-five hundred dollars to have a heat  pump  installed in your home. People are often put off by the initial price but in the long run they can expect to save a great deal of money using this machine.

There are two different types of heat  pumps  that you can install in your home. There are the ground source heat  pumps , which are more energy-efficient than air heat  pumps . The ground source heat  pumps  do not demand extra electrical heaters and they output less carbon dioxide. All heat  pumps  have been reported to have excellent performance in extreme temperatures and even work wonderfully during extreme cold temperatures.

The installation process of a heat  pump  can take about two to three days. You can expect to add this to the price of the unit because you have to pay for the labour that it takes to install the machine. When looking to have your heat  pump  installed you should look for a company that has extensive experience in this area so that they do not have to take extra time to figure out what they are doing. This will keep the total price of your unit that much lower.

Get a Lean Body Fast – Now!

So you want to GET  LEAN  FAST?

We reside in an amusing civilization. Never before has the idea of being in Slender muscular figure been so pleasing. Not long ago, a muscular man or woman was looked at as some sort of a nut. Now, however, it’s become the model: we admire our Slender idols, from Slender actors to Slender athletes, for their hard, rippling, Slender muscular bodies.

On the other hand, by no means has the general population been so pathetically out of shape. Obesity and all the health problems related to it are extensive, and you don’t have to look very hard to see it.

So it probably shouldn’t surprise us that more and more people are turning to “How to get Slender programs” (My posts are free btw), weight training, dieting, and nutritional supplements to progress the way they look and feel. Physical training can be a very satisfying Slenderg when done properly, especially when the proper diet and finest supplement protocols are used along with it. It’s worthwhile because it can drastically change the way you look, you’ll look Slenderer, the way people see you, and how you feel about yourself. Believe me, I speak from experience.

3 months ago I was a rather tubby fellow, working in a Company where the word “diabetes” is unknown, I am inclined to gain massive amount of weight. Considering the fact that I’m into parkour, I was strong and flexible, sure, but my recovery rate is close to 0%. I do recover for 2 months, then after walking for at least 1km, my injuries come back.

5 weeks ago, some Slenderg happened that change my perception in weight training. I underwent a complete transformation-to get Slender fast, using the tough-love triad of hard training, proper diet, and defined supplementation, transforming my strong-but-cuddly 185-pounds into a Slender and muscular pounds.

It was then that I began noticing a weird phenomenon: women actually started hitting on me.

And not just one or two, either. We’re talking oodles. At the office, at my Social Circle, at bars, everywhere. Without really intending to (well, maybe just a little). I say this is a weird phenomenon because, except for the new physique, I was the exact same person who had been.

A Guide to Electric Wheelchairs

Owning electric wheelchairs can be a big deal for those who are wheelchair bound. Choosing an electric wheelchair is a task all within itself. Many people do not comprehend this, but there are quite a few of these specialized chairs on the market today. If someone is going to invest in one, then a little bit of research will be necessary. By doing a bit of research, not only can someone save money, but they can be sure that they are getting the right chair for their specific needs.

Finding the perfect model from the selection of electric wheelchairs can be difficult. First, someone must comprehend the differences between the three types of models; rear wheel, mid wheel and front wheel drive. Rear wheel drive is the most popular, however, front wheel drive models are quickly gaining popularity since they have the capability to perform tight turns. Mid wheel drive models are a little harder to use because they can be difficult to maneuver on certain terrains, especially ones with rough surfaces. Yet, they do have a tight turn radius. After someone has chosen the chair to best suit their needs, they will then have the discretion to outfit their electric wheelchair with accessories to further introduce a bit of personality and flare!

Accessory features for specialized chairs are diverse. A person will have to decide if an electric   tilt  will be needed. This feature will not only  tilt  the seat, but will also set the foot rest to a forty five degree angle to provide ease of getting in and out of the chair. Another feature of powerchairs that is advantageous is the recliner option. This option allows for the seat and foot rests to recline back. Both the  tilt  and recliner options help in relieving pressure sores for people in wheelchairs.

Electric wheelchairs can make life much easier for someone with special needs. If someone does not have the sufficient upper body strength, then they may find that a manual chair is too difficult to maneuver. Choosing an electric wheelchair can be hard because of all the diverse types. The key is knowledge. If someone is educated about the different models available on today’s market, then choosing a wheelchair to fit their needs should be a breeze.

Baby Strollers – A Brief Overview

Baby strollers are helpful to get an infant, toddler or child from one place to another without having to hold them all the time. If you are shopping or sightseeing, there are times when you need to keep your hands free. If you are trying to carry a baby, a handbag, parcels and perhaps a diaper bag.

The purpose of a stroller for your child is to make transportation for the youngster easier and making everything easier for you. The stroller will have pockets and holders in which to tuck all the needed paraphernalia that a baby requires. Your hands are free to push the stroller or to check out the quality of a potential purchase.

When choosing a stroller, you should look for durability. The metal or plastic parts will receive a lot of wear. The weight of the child is increasing. The child also has an increasing range of movement. The larger and more active child will try to crawl out of the stroller. There are parts that move such as the wheels and the sunshade, if any. The parts that move must be able to withstand repeated positional changes.

Strollers come in various styles. There are light weight versions that are easily folded up and put into a car. Some strollers are designed to be used in very rough terrain. A stroller might have a tricycle style with three wheels, It is more common to have four wheels.

The stroller design allows enough room to hold a growing child. The upper portion usually has a shade that can be raised or lowered at will. The design might be convertible so that the basket portion can be used as a baby carrier or a car seat. There are strollers that are designed with a bar handle for pushing and others are lighter weight so as to be steered rather than pushed.

Various parts on the stroller are adjustable. They usually fold somewhat flat for storage or transport. There may be a hood or bonnet that can be moved to provide shade as required for the baby. Some strollers are designed so that the back can be moved into a reclining position so that the child can nap.

Baby strollers are an almost essential piece of baby paraphernalia. Temperature control is easier when the baby is not held next to the body at all times, especially in warmer climates. A stroller provides a way to include a toddler in outings without carrying or holding him constantly.

How to Get Rid of Leaves

Get Rid of Leaves

Colorful autumn leaves awe and inspire us with their scarlet and gold beauty. A few leaves scattered on the lawn will give your house the “Home Beautiful” look. But then, the leaves have the nasty habit of continuing to fall from the trees. And they keep falling and falling, and then they fall some more. When it comes time to get rid of these leaves you realize that they aren’t so gorgeous and that they have become quite a nuisance. Well, here are some simple tips that will help you get rid of your formerly beautiful, now irritating, leaves.

Mowing your lawn is possibly the best way to get rid of leaves. The mower will shred the leaves into very fine pieces that will settle deep into the turf where they will decay like all well behaved organic matter does. You may want to mow a few more times than normal at this time of the year. The more your shred the leaves, the easier it will be for them to decay.

Back breaking, hand blistering and finger racking labor never hurt anyone, did it? Not if you don’t count the breaking, blistering and racking. Invest in a good rake if you are going to rake your leaves. Purchase the largest, widest rake you can find and make sure it has metal or plastic tines. Bamboo rakes look good but break quite easily.

Compost and Be a Hero

If you are going to rake your leaves, you may as well heap them into a compost pile. Neighbors will think you are environmentally conscious because your leaves will turn into naturally wonderful fertilizer by springtime. Actually, there is a bit more to composting than simply placing leaves in a pile and waiting six months, but let’s face it, the real reason you compost is to avoid putting your leaves into bags for the trash/recycling men.

Pay Children

Paying neighborhood children to rake leaves used to be the lazy man’s dream. Not so much anymore. It seems that the economics of kid labor have gone topsy-turvy in recent years. Baby sitting, sidewalk shoveling, grass mowing and leaf raking all pull in top dollar. It seems that it is no longer acceptable to pay children paltry wages to do mind-numbing labor. However, if you do decide to go this route, set a dollar figure for the entire job versus an hourly rate. Kids can become expert dawdlers.

Leaf Blowers and the Neighbors

The easiest way to get rid of your leaves is to use a leaf blower. Of course, no discussion of leaf blowers can be complete without mentioning neighborly manners. A bad neighbor will crank up the ever-loud blower at ungodly early morning hours and will be sure to blow a nice bevy of leaves into adjacent yards. Conversely, a good neighbor will follow all the unspoken laws of polite society and may even offer to lend out the blower with one caveat – that the lendee “hold on” to the equipment in their garage until next spring. Ah, the intricacies of suburban life!

The Art of Procrastination

Avoid removing leaves from your lawn for as long as possible. Use rationalizations like “As soon as I rake them, more will fall” and “It’s too windy today.” A good procrastinator easily get past Thanksgiving with time honored excuses, and a great putter-offer may make it to the first snow of the season or even Christmas.

Ignore the Leaves

The ultimate procrastination. Make believe the leaves do not exist. Tell yourself that they will magically disappear under the snows of winter, or that the blustery winds of late fall will miraculously remove them from your yard. Delusion is always a good ploy when unappealing work is at hand.

Aside from creating air pollution and breaking the law, burning your leaves is a incredibly pleasant thing to do. There is nothing that says “Ah, autumn” like the smell and look of a smoldering pile of lawn detritus. Your neighbors may cast aspersions on your moral character, but they will secretly enjoy your bit of scofflaw activity.

You Can Get Rid of Leaves

Getting rid of leaves is more of an art than a science. You can always follow tradition and rake them up, place them in recycling bags and haul them down to the curb. But, you may want to be more imaginative, and that is why mowing, composting, paying children exorbitant wages, procrastinating, burning and blowing are all more fun and interesting. Good luck with your seasonal tussle with leaves!

Running Workouts For Beginners Explained

Okay, so you’ve just bought a new pair of shoes, a headband, and as many sports drinks as you can get your hands on. You are pumped about getting into running, and as you head outside, you get excited about getting out there and pounding some pavement.

Then you realize that you have no clue what to do.

Hey, it’s okay. We all have to start somewhere, right? If you are new to the sport of running, realize that how you start determines if you stick to it or not. Fortunately, these workouts are very beginner-friendly.

Below are a few running workouts for beginners that make the following assumptions:

– You are new to running, in that you haven’t consistently run before as a part of an exercise program.

– Your aerobic endurance is either nonexistent or low.

– You have time to run at least three times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time.

– You are interested in endurance, not speed.

Now, on to the workouts.

Workout # 1: The Walk/Jog/Run

This workout is a must for the true beginner, because it gradually ramps you up to higher levels. Start off by walking for about 5 minutes at a decent pace. You should start to feel a little out of breath, but not too tired. Then, start jogging at a slightly faster pace for 5 minutes. Then, speed it up a bit and run for 3 minutes. Go back to walking and repeat the cycle. Do this three times a workout, three times a week (every other day). After Week 1, take a minute off of your walking time and add 30 seconds to your jog and your run. Do this for three weeks.

Workout #2: Your First Mile

This workout will help you get to that first mile, a great milestone (pardon the pun) for any runner. After three weeks or so of doing the first workout, run half a mile, then jog (preferably) a half a mile, three times a week. Do this for two weeks. On your sixth week, run 3/4s of a mile and jog º a mile two different times. On your third workout that week, guess what youíre going to do?

Run your first mile! Exciting, I know.

Workout #3: Stepping Up

After completing workout #2, you are ready to start putting on some miles. We’ll say this is Week 1 of your actual running program. For Week 1, run 1 mile three times (every other day). For Week 2, run 1 mile twice a week, then run 1.5 miles on your last day. For Week 3, run 1.5 miles three times, every other day. Then, for Week 4, go the distance: Try to run 1 mile at least 4 times that week. Go for 5 days if you can make it.

If you follow those workouts, you can gradually and safely build up your endurance. You’ll be winning marathons and stockpiling medals in no time.

Time Management – Bridge the Gap From Failure to Success With Scheduling

Time management! What a concept! I think everyone loves to have their hand and their control on the dials and control of their time. Don’t you? In this short article, I do my best to give you some access to the way you are relating to your time and your schedule that might make a difference for you. I will not tell you how to do it, but I will assist you to see how you relate to your time and your schedule.

To start, write down a typical day for you in your life and your job. Start from Monday all the way to Sunday and look at everyday on that week and write down everything that you usually do on that piece of paper. You can make a column for each day and write down what are you doing, like a list or schedule. I know it might be annoying, but it is a start and we will go to the next step soon.

After you complete that, look and see based on your typical routine, what emotions do you experience?

Upset, Tired, Helpless, Resentful, Hopeless, Frustrated and more…

Why do you think you are feeling that way? I suggest that you look and see, what are your beliefs about following a schedule or time management? Or about Time itself? All of these beliefs started when we were young, or when we started working and making our own money. When we were kids we watched our parents and the way they related to money, time, work and schedule and we learned to do that too. Or we learned what didn’t work and we decided we would do something else, like do it another way!

So, possible places that we established our beliefs about time management are:

Parents, School, High School, Church, Friends, First boss, First job, Government, Society, Media and more…

These beliefs that you picked and decided on then became your realities today! You said that to yourself for so many years that you believed them yourself. For some of us, we never examined the workability or un-workability of other ways, we just believed that and that was it! For some of us we, believed that Time is sacred and it is hard to manage and that was it, we said it and thought it for so many years that it became part of our day to day reality.

I am going to walk through some steps and I am asking you to follow these steps and see what have you learned about yourself.

A- Look at what is the excuse that I use most often for not following my schedule?

I don’t have time, I am too busy, I don’t know what to do, I am getting interrupted a lot, I am tired, I have to do something else first, These are not important and more…

B- Look at some examples of things you have been putting off, dreaming about or projects you have not completed. I am sure there are lots of them;

Buying a house, having your dream car, finishing different projects, getting married, having a family, going on your dream vacation, building your own business, losing weight, accomplishing your goals and more…

C- Look at what has been missing for me to not have the above items, projects or goals in my life today?

Disappointed, upset, resentful, tired, helpless, hopeless, frustrated and more…

Exactly the way you experienced your emotion after you wrote your daily routine. What does this tell you about you? You are not up to it; you just love to complain… ! You might not like what I am saying here, but take a hard, honest and authentic look at yourself and tell me if you are not being lazy, disorganized or a procrastinator about your time and schedule!

D- Describe your life after you have done or have all the above things, projects and goals.

Happy, fulfilled, content, successful and more…

E- You can have different beliefs and realities for yourself about time and schedule! Like what? Like;

Schedule and time management are my tools to fulfill my projects.

Without scheduling I cannot get my dreams accomplished.

I can bridge the gap from failure to success with scheduling and time management.

Now, what do you realize about yourself?

You are in the way! You as your thought, your beliefs and realities that have been created from your past are in the way of fulfilling your future.

In the end remember this;

If it’s not in my schedule it won’t get done.

Have a productive life.

Wire Loom As Cable Organizer

Wire loom is a tool for cable management and widely used in all type of industries as well as household needs as they are good cable organizers and used as both wire covers and protectors. This is a corrugated tube which is flexible and commonly used to bundle wires and cable very neatly and works as wire cover as well as protector. It is in shape of tube with a ridged outer surface for providing it extra strength as well as making easier for bending, if required. It can be taken as flexible conduit pipe also, when additional protection is required.

General wire looms are available with a slit through which cables to be managed, are inserted from one side and taken through the other side. They are available in different sizes or can be cut to fit any desired size. For inserting cables, through the slits and cutting these looms, specific tools are also available. Inserting cables through slits can be done easily with hands also but it is recommended to use tool for inserting it efficiently. Removal of cables and wires from wire loom is also very easy that’s why it is preferred in situations where frequent changes in wiring are anticipated. Though slit types are commonly used but there are non slit wire looms also available which can be used just as a conduit pipe for safety of cables.

Wire looms have unlimited applications everywhere whether at home protecting cables from kids and pets and up to that complicated wirings in automotive machines like bike and cars. Available in different colors and different material used for fabrication they are able to be used in almost every environment. At our home, as an example of the most common application, we can cover the wire coming out from any low height power socket where the cable has to run through ground creating a chance of being damaged by pets around.

These are the wires which can not be concealed permanently and wiring pattern may need to be changed for some reasons so we cannot think of any other way of covering as well as protecting them except wire looms. Colorful wire looms are available for such use where these cable covers will not disturb the natural beauty of the area used rather they may add some beauty to it. In our bathrooms also we can find it as a common accessories where galvanized type of looms are used to protect the water carrying flexible pipes adding beauty as well as perfect protection also. This can be seen commonly used with our shower used in bath tubs or wall mount showers.

One more complex type of wire application we can see used in cable harness or cable assembly in our car engine or in motorbikes. In car engines the wires are bundled in such a way that they are bound together through cable ties, electrical tapes and wire looms. These wires have to be protected from heat produced by engine, moisture, abrasion and vibrations. Space optimization is an equally important issue in such management and it should be easy to add, replace or remove any wire in case of troubleshooting or repairing.

If we can find the wire management of our car so complicated then just imagine what will be the cable management required for a passenger aircraft. If we can take one such wire assembly and open it, the length may be hundreds of meters. Preparing such assemblies with all the features of safety, protection and troubleshooting / repairing friendly are very tough as well as time taking and wire looms are very useful tool for achieving such complicated wiring assembly even. All such wire harnesses are first created as a complete assembly then it is fitted at its original place with all the fire protection covers to minimize the risks from short circuit type of accidents. All the wires are first cut to desired lengths, stripped on the terminating end for making connection then they are routed through sleeves according to wiring diagram and finally different sleeves to be bundled together and routed through sleeves or wire looms for giving the final shape to such assembly.

Wire looms, also known as convoluted tubing, are used in variety of applications as cable protector and cable organizer at the same time and they can be used anywhere like home used computers and other equipments, Industrial cabling and automotive wiring assemblies. There are different types of wire looms available which suits to specific requirements. Colored wire looms can be used for adding beauty to existing open wires and at large scale it can be used for color coding. Nylon wire looms, especially manufactured to withstand temperature are used in automotive applications.

Galvanized steel looms are manufactured with its special features like crush proof and corrosion resistance property and are used in bathroom fitting and fro covering home used gas pipes besides all the industrial application where mechanical protection to cables is required. Flame retardant wire looms are used where the cables have the face danger of fire and flames and they can work safely up to a good temperature range.

Aluminized slit wire looms with chrome finish, automotive fluid resistant, are used where thermal protection of cables are required, they can afford a temperature up to 1000 degree F.

How to Use a Portable Fishfinder

Portable fishfinders are increasing in popularity. This fact is mainly due to their perfect fit for recreational fishing. Since they are relatively inexpensive and, of course, portable, they are a perfect out-of-the-box solution for many weekend warriors.

Once you actually purchase a portable fish finder, how do you use it? That is overall a simple question to answer. First, the manuals are generally excellent and for the most part simple to follow, so read the manual! After that, here are some simple steps to follow to help increase your enjoyment during your next fishing trip.

  1. The Power Supply- Most portable fish finders are powered by batteries, generally AA batteries. Make sure when you are purchasing your unit you are aware of what type of batteries are needed. It is advisable to buy re-chargeable batteries as even if the unit has a long battery life you will need to re-charge the batteries after several long fishing trips. Using re-chargeable batteries will greatly reduce your expenses in the long run.
  2.   Mounting – How do you mount your fish finder? The answer to this question will depend on the type of fishfinder you are using. Some fishfinders have a suction cup  mounting  system for the transducer. You can mount these transducers anywhere on your boat as long as they are securely attached and also underwater. If the sonar is not underwater, you will not find any fish! If you mount the fish finder on a boat make sure it is not too close to the motor or else the motor wash will interfere with the sonar readings. The Humminbird Fishin’ Buddy fish finders come with a “ mounting  clamp” which will allow you to attach the fishfinder to the side of a boat or to a low dock. Lastly, if you have a wireless fish finder you can generally attach the sonar unit to the line and cast it with your lure.
  3. Speed- It is not recommended to use your portable fishfinder at high speeds. In general, high speeds will stress the unit and possibly break it. At high speeds it is best to pull it out of the water and then put it back in while moving at about 1-2 mph to help you scan the bottom of the water.
  4. The Display- Since most portable fishfinders are not as effective at great depths, they are used mostly in shallow freshwater. They can be used in shallow saltwater as well, but that is not as common. So what do you look for on the fishfinder screen? Look for depth, water temperature and bottom structures. Look for drop offs, weed beds, rocks, fallen logs, sand, mud and any sort of transitions. These are areas where fish like to hide.

Now that you have some simple ways to increase your fishing enjoyment using your portable fishfinder, let’s quickly answer the question of why you should use one. First, portable fishfinders can go with you on any fishing trip. They can be used on your boat, your buddy’s boat or even from a land location. Second, portable fishfinders can let you adapt to fish behavior. The wireless fishfinders allow you to cast your transducer with the lure in “stealth” mode thereby not spooking the fish. Lastly, portable fishfinders are very versatile. There are even ice fishing models that can handle the extreme cold. Overall portable fishfinders have brought to recreational fishing what professional fishing has had for years-the ability to find fish quicker so that your true fishing skills are brought to bear.

A Short History of Import Markings and Dating of Japanese Ceramics

Pre 1891- Items imported to the U.S. did not have to be marked with the country of their origin.

Most Japanese ceramics were not stamped with any backstamp or they were marked with the Artist’s or Manufacture’s name in Japanese.

1891 – 1921 – Starting in March, 1891, after enactment of the McKinley Tariff Act, all goods imported to the U.S. were required to be marked in English with the country of origin.

In 1914 the Tariff Act has amended to make the words “Made In” in addition to the country of origin mandatory. This was not rigorously enforced until around 1921 so some pre 1921 pieces can still be found without the “Made In” wordage.

Most Japanese pieces from this period were marked “Nippon” or “Hand Painted Nippon”. They quite often will have a company logo. You will find a few pieces from this era just marked Japan and a few with no markings at all.

1921 – 1941 -In August, 1921 the U.S. Custom Service ruled that Nippon could no longer be used and all goods where to be backstamped with “Made in Japan”. Some items got into the U.S. with just a “Japan” stamp. In an effort to save on labor costs not all pieces in a setting were backstamped. This means that you can have an 8 place setting that was imported as a 12 place setting with no stamps at all. Prior to WW ll the few paper stickers that made it to the U.S. were very flimsy and glued on with very weak glue.

1941 – 1945 – This was WW ll so there were no imports from Japan. Imports from Japan did not really start back up until the summer of 1947.

1947 – 1952 – The occupation of Japan by the U.S. began in September 1945 but no items reached the U.S. from Japan until around August 1947. All imports from Japan up till 1949 had to be stamped “Occupied Japan” or “Made in Occupied Japan”.

In 1949 the U.S. Custom Service decreed that “Occupied Japan”, “Made in Occupied Japan”, “Made in Japan” or just “Japan” where acceptable. Most pieces were backstampted in black ink. Later in this period flimsy paper stickers started to show up on more and more items. Most of these were removed or fell off so these pieces can be unmarked.

1952 – Today – The vast majority of today’s Imports are marked “Japan” or “Made in Japan”. This is when the paper or foil labels came into their own. The 2 most common labels now seem to be:

1 – A small oval or rectangular shaped paper sticker. These, most likely, will be made in blue or black with white lettering.

2 – A black or red foil label with gold or silver lettering.

Some imports are still backstamped today but not many.

Caution – A lot of knockoffs were imported from China in the 1980s to early 2000s and to a lesser extent are still coming in. These are made so well that to recognize these fakes by just looking at the backstamp is almost impossible.

10.) Skull Tower

Begonias Bloom in Sun or Shade

Known botanically as Begonia semperflorens, begonias are tender perennials grown as annuals in areas with freezing winter temperatures. They only grow about nine inches high, so they are often used as border plants in flower beds. Begonias grow in either full sun or partial shade. The plants produce seeds but they are very difficult to start from seed. Since they are so popular, they are available everywhere in early spring as small bedding plants. They grow equally well in the garden, in container gardens, or in hanging baskets.

Plant begonias in full sun to partial shade. They will produce flowers either way, but flower production will be less in shade than in sun. Begonias like rich, loose soil that is well-drained, and where water does not stand too long after a rain.

Prepare the planting bed. Add 2 inches of peat moss, 1 inch of sand and 1 inch of compost to the surface of the soil in the planting bed. Turn over the soil using a spade, digging down the depth of the spade. Smooth the soil with a garden rake when finished.

Plant begonias from transplants. They are widely available in springtime, in colors ranging from white to yellow to pink to red. Use your garden trowel to dig a small hole slightly larger than the size of the starter pot the begonias came in. Pop the roots into the hole, then back fill with soil. Firm the surface of the soil gently with your hands so the little plant stands up on its own. Space the transplants 6 to 8 inches apart in all directions for a mass of color.

Water the transplants individually with a hand watering can after the bed is completely planted. Continue to provide begonias with the equivalent of an inch of rainfall per week.

Mulch the planting bed with 2 inches of shredded leaves or hay. Begonias will quickly grow to completely hide the soil, but a mulch is helpful in early spring when they’re still small and vulnerable to competition from weeds.

Fertilize begonias weekly using a water-soluble fertilizer sprayed directly on the foliage with a hose-end sprayer. Mix the fertilizer in the spray-attachment, following the recommendations of the manufacturers of both the fertilizer and the sprayer. Spray the plants with the fertilizer mixture in early morning, before the sun gets too high in the sky.

Begonias can be potted up and overwintered indoors. Dig up and plant half a dozen plants in an 8-inch pot. Cut the plants back by half of their size and place in a south-facing window. They will acclimate themselves and begin growing in a few weeks. Move them back outdoors when all danger of frost has passed.
