How to Create a Home Lighting Design Plan

Beautiful rooms include beautiful lighting designs, an important element in interior design. There are three things to consider when creating a good lighting design plan for your room: function, mood and harmony.

Illumination

Light is a natural resource we get from the sun. We need good illumination in our homes to assist us in our daily living activities. Lighting can be natural, which occurs in the daytime or artificial, which is created through lighting design plans.

Natural Light

Direct light comes from the sun, while indirect comes from the whole umbrella of the sky. Light can be bright or filtered depending on the orientation of the sun and time of day. It is important to analyze the natural sunlight of each room when creating your interior lighting design plan as well as how many windows and how large. For example, north facing rooms bring in cool, bluish sunlight which will be cooler and darker so you may need additional illumination. Southern and western exposures will have a yellow, warmer cast and will be brighter. The goal is to have as much natural sunlight as possible coming into your home.

Artificial Light

When natural light is not possible such as on a cloudy day, evening or night, due to a lack of windows or orientation of windows causing low illumination, we want to compensate for that through the use of various artificial light sources through the house.

Benefits of Good Lighting

Good lighting not only allows us to see but it expands our visibility. Proper illumination helps us complete our tasks efficiently. As we age, we need more light. Humans need to be exposed to a specific amount of light each day for better performance physiologically, neurobehavioral and sleep according to http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/lightHealth/index.asp

Lighting Plan

A good lighting plan includes creating function, mood and harmony. You begin by carefully analyzing your room. What is the room's function? Where are the work areas? What style and mood do you want to create? The work areas would need task lighting, which is more direct, whiter and brighter. Accent (mood) lighting is next. It highlights special areas of your room you may want to show off like: the silhouette of a plant, a beautiful painting or objet d'art.

Accent lighting also can add a bit of drama to a room. Accent lighting is a softer type of lighting. It is always good to check your plan at night. Once you have task and accent lighting, if your room still has dark areas and needs additional lighting, add ambient (general) lighting to the specific areas. Choose a light fixture as a piece of art. For example, a torchiere lamp is an uplight. It adds soft lighting, a great way to bring drama into a room and brighten up a dark corner.

Harmony

Light fixtures come in many styles. To create harmony, select fixtures that support your room design style. In other words, if you have a modern room, choose a modern fixture. If traditional, choose traditional. You also want different types of light fixtures, such as ceiling mounted, wall mounted, table mounted, uplights and downlights. Choose different directions of illumination and different heights for placement of light fixtures as well as different intensities.

Beautiful rooms begin with a good furniture layout. Beautiful lighting designs are well planned and thought out. I hope I have given you a good start to create your own lighting design plan. Thank you for reading my article.

How to Create the Perfect Ambiance in Your Home Using Lighting

The easiest way to change up the mood of your home is through lighting. In fact, lighting can change much more than just the ambiance of a room, it can also affect your health, the comfort of your home, the appearance of your dÊcor and its colors, and the overall feel of a room, all of this by simply changing one aesthetic.

How you light a room can make all the difference, whether it is artificial light or natural light.

Tips for creating the perfect ambiance in your home:

1.Natural light: It helps us thrive, it is the key to a healthy body, mind and our well-being. Your home can also benefit from natural lighting, too. This type of light can actually kill that bacteria that thrive in dark spaces, driving it out. And natural light creates the type of ambiance that artificial light just can not.

In natural light, you feel more wake and alive, which is perfect for a sunny breakfast nook, a kitchen (who wants to create in a dark kitchen?), A playroom or artist's space. Have a workout or yoga room? Natural light can help you feel more energized there, too.

2. Bright rooms: Small rooms feel bigger when you brighten them. Natural light, or any type of illumination here, can fool your brain into seeing a larger space. And just the opposite: If you have a larger room that you would like to make feel cozier, add dark, large furniture with subdued lighting.

3. Multiple lamps: In the evening, multiple lighting sources can help make your home seem more inviting, rather than, say, a bright overhead light fixture. Leave the operating room lights out of it, and really create an ambiance that is comforting and warm. Wall sconces through your home can help to seemingly enlarge your interiors visually, while making your home a place you want to linger.

4. Window treatments: Window treatments can allow light in, or keep it out. If you are trying to maximize the natural light, look to lighter curtains and lighter blinds, that let light in. Want that cozy, warm feel in your great room or bedroom? Heavy drapes, dark blinds and layered fabrics can keep out the natural light, giving you a more cave-like feel.

5. Artificial light: Artificial light has come a long way, and it can really work to beautify your home. There are fun, eco-friendly LED fixtures that are both innovative and warm, reflecting off your walls, ceilings and even floors to give you a unique look. Use this type of lighting to really highlight any unusual or creative architecture or artwork in your home.

Using lighting can really create the perfect ambiance in your home. Walk through each room and decide what you want that room to feel like, and then, using trial and error, find your home's perfect lighting!

Prepping Walls For Wallpaper

Like any venture or project, prepping a wall for a major or minor overhaul needs time and careful preparation. If the project you have in mind is plastering your walls with home wallpaper and wallpaper borders, you have a lot of things to consider such as the type of surface your walls have, and the theme or look you want to accomplish. Wall murals should also work well with the various wall surfaces through your home.

Before deciding what pattern of wallpaper you want to order, ask your local wallpaper store for at least 2 swatches and decide which pattern fits your home or room best. When placing an order, make sure you order an extra roll or two for future use, such as repairs and minor installations. The number of rolls you need will depend on the square footage of your room, so measure each room beforehand.

Once your order arrives, inspect it immediately. Take note of the lot number and the quantity of your order. Check the color pattern and match them with the sample that you have. You must also inspect if the coloring on every roll is even (some might have faded) and if there is any damage to any of the rolls' edges. It is imperative that you check for defects before actually using the home wallpaper and wallpaper borders.

You can only achieve the best effects with wallpaper borders and wall murals if they are installed properly. To do that, the walls must be fully prepared. Removing old wallpaper, smoothing the walls' surface and priming it with the right paint, and filling any cracks and holes are necessary steps in making the new wallpaper bond perfectly to the wall.

For walls that are covered in non-gloss paint, it is necessary to have the paint scraped or sanded off. After the paint is removed, wash the wall with an all-purpose cleaner. After the wall has discharged, apply an acrylic primer. You can then proceed to installing your home wallpaper and wall murals.

For walls that are painted with semi-or high-gloss paint, they should be covered with acrylic primer.

For mildew-plagued walls, a wash down with a mixture of bleach and water is recommended to clean the surface. After the walls are cleaned, rinse thoroughly, dry well, and then apply the primer.

Wood-paneled walls covered in gloss must be washed thoroughly with a mixture of de-glossing solution and water. It must then be sanded smooth. Vertical grooves must be filled with spackle. You can then apply the primer and hang the wall mural or wallpaper border of your choice.

There are a few tools necessary for a smooth installation process:

o Steel tape measure – for measurement purposes;

o Water tray – if using pre-pasted wallpaper, dip the strips in the trough to prime the adhesive;

o Seam roller – tool used to flatten the wallpaper's surface;

o Razor knife with lots spare blades – used to cut strips of wallpaper;

o Pencil – used to mark specific points on the wallpaper;

o Bucket and sponge – washing and wiping purposes;

o Ladders – helps you reach those high places.

Be sure you have these tools ready as they will definitely come in handy as you do your wallpaper project. Preparing a wall may take half a day, but the end result is certainly worth it. Home wallpaper that is perfectly installed is sure to enhance and liven up any room.

Fireproof Gun Safe – What Are Your Social Responsibilities In Bearing Firearms?

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution clearly states that the people of the US have the right to bear arms. While this is well and good, your right to bear firearms comes with very heavy responsibility to your family members as well as society at large. A gun is not a toy and when you lose it in a burglary, chances are that they often will end up in a robbery case or even murder, thereby causing social hazards. Worse if your little children happen to chance upon your loaded gun in your unlocked drawer and begin playing with it. Yes, a fireproof gun safe is in order.

In fact, in some states like California, you can be legally legally for owning a gun but not a safe to keep it safely stashed away in. Here, it should be your key priority of to buy your gun safe the moment you buy your guns. They are designed to fit all types of requirements, for hand guns or rifles. Often, a fireproof gun safe comes in high cabinet designs while others are in the form of your usual looking safes.

While it may be true that you own guns to protect your family members, it is also a harsh fact that they can harm them as much as protect them. This is true when curious children lay their hands on real guns, thinking that they are toys, starting pointing them at their siblings or parents and pulling the trigger. The risk is greatly heightened if the guns are loaded. Here, keep firearms well stashed away and out of sight from the children.

A fireproof gun safe is able to protect your firearms in the events of either fire or theft, apart from protecting them from little children. If you opt for the safe designs, you can easily hide it away in your wardrobe or cabinet, thereby arousing less curiosity and vice thoughts. That said, keeping a fireproof gun safe is always the best way to protect your family as well as be socially responsible.

Industrial Vinyl Flooring – A Good Choice For Your Home

When it comes to flooring materials used for industrial and commercial applications, it is very important that you choose those that are durable and, at the same time, affordable. With industrial vinyl flooring, you can have these two features. It is not really surprising that a lot of office buildings, warehouses and many other big facilities make use of industrial vinyl tiles.

The good news is that you can also take advantage of the strength and affordability of this type of flooring tiles or sheets. On top of these qualities, here is why you may want to use industrial or commercial vinyl flooring for your home.

Although this type of commercial flooring material is a bit more expensive, it is still worth the cost because it is durable. If ordinary vinyl tile has an average lifespan of 7 years, an industrial vinyl tile can last even twice as long. So, even if the price difference is $ 1 per square foot, it is still a more practical product to choose.

If you think that you can not afford commercial vinyl flooring for all the rooms in your home, it is advisable that you use ordinary vinyl tiles for rooms that are not frequently used or have low foot traffic, such as the guest room. But it is a good idea to use industrial vinyl products for the kitchen, bathroom and other rooms that are usually occupied or frequented.

Another reason for using industrial flooring is that it has greater grip on your feet compared to other types of flooring. Some surfaces typically are slippery when wet. Although vinyl tiles can also be slippery if damp, they do provide more traction.

But for your children and for your safety as well, it is always best to wipe up any traces of water or moisture on the floor to avoid accidents, no matter what floor material is used. There are also industrial vinyl sheets and mats that have more fillers or padding. This means that the vinyl surface is insulated and is better for your feet.

Lastly, industrial vinyl flooring also comes in many designs, colors, styles and sizes. You do not have to choose from just white, black, brown and gray. In fact, you can find tiles that are orange, green, yellow, pink and even lilac.

Although industrial vinyl tiles and sheets are great for floors, they can also be used to design walls. If you want brick walls, for example, you can just buy vinyl sheets that look like brick rather than buy the expensive bricks. . .

Hopscotch Stencils – Sidewalk Delights

The game of hopscotch is a sidewalk and playground staple that has endured for centuries to become one of the widest-played court games in the world today. Equal parts throwing precision and physical dexterity, which is on paper a numbingly simple game is actually a demanding test of stamina and skill. It is because because of its deceptive simplicity that hopscotch remains such a popular children's game. Indeed, its exclusively-shaped court, which can actually vary depending on where it is played and the preferences of the players, is immediately recognizable as such.

In some locations, permanent hopscotch courts exist, practically engraved into stone and concrete to provide a ready-made game or three to any groups of children who are inclined to take advantage of it. Other times, children or their elders take a piece of street chalk and scrawl a court into existence on the sidewalk or playground. Often, this approach produces uneven hopscotch courts that deteriorate quickly as excited boys and girls stomp on its lines. Since it is not really worth anyone's time to actually fashion a sidewalk into a permanent court, there is an acceptable halfway alternative: painting the court on the pavement using a hopscotch stencil. Just as stencils in general facilitate the painting of smooth, sharp and professional-looking lines, a hopscotch stencil ensures that the court that you generate looks snazzy enough that even adults will stop and consider playing.

Hopscotch stencil designs range from the standard schoolyard court to new-fangled styles that have alternating squares in a checker pattern, or courts that are shaped like animals, such as fish. Whichever design you select is really a matter of personal preference. If you are a purist, just go for the traditional hopscotch arrangement. However, if you would like to demonstrate a bit of variant creativity, the hopscotch court that has a crocodile design may be a more satisfying buy. In all cases, make sure your stencil is made of decent quality grade plastic, so that it will afford you and your children, and their playmates, an indefinite number of fun hours through repeated use.

To paint a hopscotch stencil properly, first pick a stretch of straight, flat sidewalk pavement, taking care to minimizeize cracks or lines that may disrupt the court's integrity. Once you have found a suitable area, start sweeping up the place, clearing it of dirt, stones and other debris. Otherwise, you'll find yourself painting on dust and rocks. Then, lay the hopscotch stencil out flat, and secure it to the pavement with some masking tape or similar adhesive. Afterwards, spray the paving paint or brush it onto the stencil, taking care to apply the paint coat evenly. Lastly, find something else to do for about an hour, like take the kids for ice cream or the corner store to buy some goodies. When you return, the paint will have washed, and your children can jump straight into the action, literally, when you remove the stencil.

A good hopscotch stencil is a great way to bring fun and excitement to a boring sidewalk. It would be prudent to have one on hand to encourage your kids to seek play outdoors.

Photo Montage (or Slideshow) Tips and Ideas

If you're anything like me, you've got old photos in boxes, scattered pictures in various scrapbooks or albums, a computer hard drive with photos saved in places you do not even remember, maybe even some undeveloped film (who knows what could be on there!). If you're looking for something to do with all of it, why not make a photo slideshow on DVD replete with music and specials effects? It is a great way to keep a permanent record of all those photos as DVDs can last up to 100 years. There are plenty of companies that will perform that service for you (including the author's) or you can do it yourself. If you want to do it yourself, here are some ideas to help you out.

Know Your Audience

The most important aspect in creating any photo montage is in knowing your audience. Ultimately, what you are doing with your montage is telling a story. To tell it effectively, you have to know who you are telling it to. The audience will play a large part in how many pictures you want to include, the type of music you want, and the length of the presentation. Here are a few specific ideas:

* If you plan on showing your montage to a larger audience (like a birthday, wedding reception / rehearsal dinner, or anniversary party) make sure you consider how you are going to present it. Is your slideshow going to be a drop for the party or is there going to be a time to sit down where everyone will gather to watch? If it is a backdrop, you probably want to use more pictures. That way, people can watch parts as they please, mingle, and then come back to watch different parts as the party moves on. If your montage is going to be displayed with the expectation that most people will stop what they are doing to watch, keep your presentation limited to about 4 songs (about 125 to 175 photos). This is a good length to create some nice emotions yet short enough that it will not interrupt the event.

* If you plan on showing your slideshow to a small and intimate audience, the best bet is to make it short and sweet. One to two personal songs with about 75 photographs makes a great surprise gift.

The Importance Of Order

There are a variety of approaches you can take in ordering your photographs (thematically, chronologically, etc). What usually has the best flow is a chronological order. Chronological order allows you to encapsulate all facets of a person's life in a way that everyone will understand. It also creates a great nostalgia effect early on which will grab your audience's attention right away.

Music

Generically speaking, songs with lyrics are best. Since the majority of your DVD will be pictures, having lyrics really helps to attach the photos to the music. If a particular lyric matches up to what is going on in a particular photo that is even better.

As to musical genre, that is a matter of personal taste. From experience, though, a mix is usually the most powerful. If you are making an upbeat, light-hearted presentation, then matching music is appropriate. If you are looking for something engaging and emotional, then think of your presentation like it is a great movie. You want a lighter side, a dramatic part, and a great ending. Depending on the number of photos you have, probably one or two up-tempo songs, one or two slower songs, and then the homerun song for the end.

When picking specific songs, it is a good idea to think beyond the more common popular songs. What is the person's favorite song? How about a song from their childhood? Maybe one version of a song works better than another (like acoustic versus electric)? There is an amazing amount of music available online; it is a good idea to explore. You will know when you see it in your presentation if it really fits.

Photo Quality

A big issue related to creating a photo montage is photo editing. There is plenty of software that can clean up cracks, fix lighting, adjust color, remove spots, etc .; some works better than others (check out http://www.cnet.com for product reviews). The one problem no software can fix, though, is a grainy photo. Unfortunately, an out-of-focus photograph is going to remain an out-of-focus picture in your slideshow. When you are selecting the photos are going to include, you should choose the clearest ones you have. Keep in mind that your slideshow may have lots of transitions, backgrounds, pan and zooms, etc. so you want photos with a focal point that is as clean as possible. Clean photos help keep the flow of the presentation.

Video

A good way to add some flair to your montage is to add video. If you can find and isolate some good video clips, they add a great touch. If you do decide to add video, do not make the clips too long. Remember, you have a story to tell and need to keep it moving. Keep the clip down to about thirty seconds and consider using video as a break point between "chapters" or songs.

Narrate It

Another great touch is to use personal voice recordings in your slideshow. If your presentation is a gift, hearing your voice makes it that much more personal (and memorable). Voice recording can be done on most home computers. Turn on the microphone and go for it!

Quotes and Poems

If you are really looking to create an emotional montage, use photo captions. They can be personal quotes, famous quotes, short poems, etc. Whatever your preference, a good quote can help to convey the true meaning behind a certain photo or draw out deep emotions.

Personalize It

What makes any gift special? The thought of course – especially the thought that comes from you. Since that is the case, some piece of personalization, however small, is critical. Think of it as your signature on a painting. Whether it is a song, a caption, or even a certain photo make sure to make it your own.

The End

Sometimes one of the best parts of a movie is the highlight reel at the end (think "Build Me Up, Buttercup" at the end of There's Something About Mary). If you can come up with your own "bloopers reel," it would be an excellent finishing touch to your slideshow.

Back-Up Plan

Once all of your pictures have been scanned, cataloged, and you are ready to start on your montage, do not forget to create a file with just your origins in case you need to go back to them for some reason. It is a good idea to also create a separate folder with your edited photos. That way you have copies of both for a "Doomsday scenario." This also provides you a way to preserve all your print photos which can degrade over time (cracking, turning yellow, etc).

Hopefully, these ideas are helpful to you. Creating a photo slideshow is a lot of work but it always turns out to be worth it in the end.

Chandelier Parts

It happens in the life of any good chandelier: something breaks. Or, maybe the part just "disappears." Perhaps you just want to do a little minority redecorating. Regardless, you need not replace the entire chandelier; instead, you can make use of the vast supply of chandeliers' parts, which are sold on both the web and in physical stores.

Beads

Beads are often sold in packs of ten. Depending on which material you are looking for, you can expect to pay a range of prices based on whether the beads are made of crystal or something of less value. Unfortunately, unless you are going to replace all of the beads, you will probably be forced to buy something from the original manufacturer, because you may not be able to find beads that match your chandelier otherwise.

Chains

If you want to expand the reach of your chandeliers, then you can buy some extra chain links that match the original chain. Of course, you might as well replace the whole thing, since your options are to buy individuals links (great when a single piece breaks) or an entire long chain.

Light Bulbs

Here you will have to check the burned out bulb in order to know what you will need to replace it. Chandelier bulbs are not built like normal bulbs, as you can plainly see if you examine one. Neverheless, they are reliably cheap and abundant in supply. You will save money by buying packs of multiple bulbs instead of a single one; this is wise, because at some time in the future, you will need to use those backup bulbs as well.

Shades

Shades for chandeliers are one of the best products you can use to show your own customized design ability. Since they come in many different colors, you can get quite creative. It is best to make a complete change of all the shades at once when going this route. Even if you are just replacing one, it will probably not look the same because it will look new, while the others will look faded.

The web is, in my opinion, the perfect place to find parts for chandeliers. They are abundant and easy to find. Pretty much whatever part you can dream up is out there somewhere, being sold by someone – and probably at a reasonable price at that.

The Importance of Collaboration in Depression & Suicide Prevention

A sister

A client…

Who among us have not had our lives influenced by an encounter with death by suicide. When you serve those who journey with a mood disorder, explorations of suicidal thoughts and fantasies come with the territory. When the news is full of information about this kind of death, our antennas go up, making sure we are looking out for those in our care.

Most of us learn to explore this territory with some ease if not confidence, none of us want to lose someone to suicide. We soldier into the conversation with some clear objectives:

  • Is there a plan?
  • How serious and immediate is that plan?
  • Do they have access to the resources to carry out that plan?
  • Etcetera.

We AND our clients have access to information but not always ample and equal access to resources. The recent celebrity deaths can and are having an influence with clients journeying through the darker environs of grief and / or mood disorders.

Back in the eighties, I worked at the Western Institute of Neuropsychiatry (WIN) on the mood disorders unit. We had the luxury of working with all patients individually for hours at a time. This was in addition to groups, medication stabilization, etc. Our team consisted of a psychiatrist, psychologist, a couple of social workers and nurses, with ancillary service providers on staff. We met regularly, exchanging information and collaborating on care.

Most inpatient facilities these days afford no such luxuries. Nonetheless, hospitalization to protect clients from immediate danger is the standard of care, as it should be. But what about those clients who are not presenting with a clear and present danger and are at risk nonetheless?

One thing I learned from my early and very satisfying experiences at WIN is the importance of having a care team. Having a care team enables practitioners to “put the hospital around the patient,” as a brilliant colleague would say.

This means:

  • increasing the number of visits to two, three, four or more times a week
  • with the clients’ permission, including family or friends in the care plan as needed
  • communicating at regular times between visits
  • helping the client map out a somewhat structured day plan – this is extremely valuable to those suffering with the brain fog and heaviness that can accompany mood disorders
  • supporting them in using the small, easy practices they have learned. Loving kindness meditations via apps can be useful for clients during this time. Unless they have already been practicing mindfulness, it is not the best time to learn mindfulness.
  • collaborating with the client’s care team. For me that generally means my client and the prescribing practitioner.

This final point, collaborating with the prescribing practitioner is one that I see is often neglected by practitioners in private practice. As my mentor, Dick Olney would say, “Don’t wait until you are in the middle of a fire to practice a fire drill.”

When someone is shut down by the heaviness of depression AND they are considering suicide – there’s a firestorm. We are able to provide better care when we have a good collaborative relationship with our clients’ prescribing practitioner. If you have clients on medication and you are not in touch with the person prescribing medication for them, I hope you will get a release if you don’t already have one, reach out to consult and collaborate about your shared client. Developing this kind of collaborative relationship puts you in the position to help access valuable resources for your client when they may not be able to do so.

AND, take care of yourself. Seriously. Reach out to your friends, take some time to be in the woods and put your feet on the grass. If you’ve lost someone to death by suicide, you are likely carrying some tension. How is the news about death by suicide affecting you and your practice?

Types Of Wheel Loaders

A wheel loader is a heavy equipment vehicle used for construction, farming and landscaping jobs. It can perform four general tasks: scooping, digging, dumping and carrying. In construction, it can be used to load materials such as bricks, sand or asphalt onto another machine or vehicle. In farming, it can be used to carry and transport hay, distribute feeds or spread fertilizer. In landscaping, it can be used to clear away brush and other debris from a work area.

A wheel loader has durable tires with large and rugged thread that allows for manoeuvrability. Most of the modern makes and models also use a hydraulic steering system, which allows its front and rear axles to bear more weight than automatic steering systems. This feature is especially useful when this heavy equipment vehicle needs to work with heavy and dense materials.

With the variety of tasks it can perform and its range of practical features, there is no doubt that a wheel loader is a versatile machine. However, not all of these vehicles are built alike. In this article we discuss their different types. Understanding their design and functions can help you decide which one best fits your requirements.

Heavy wheel loaders

There are various makes and models of loaders, which can be categorized into heavy and light wheel loader.

Heavy loaders can weigh over 50,000 pounds and provide horsepower of over 230 hp. These heavy industrial designed loaders include front end, backhoe, bucket and scoop loaders. A heavy scoop shovel may be added to either end of the loader for carrying and transport of materials, clearing debris and digging. In areas where snow is experienced during winter, a heavy loader can be used for clearing large amounts of snow as they are able to thread through thick levels of snow. Other implements or tools may also be attached to make it perform a wider range of tasks.

Light wheel loaders

Light loaders are much smaller and lighter than their heavy counterparts with horsepower that range from 18 to 50hp. They include mini and compact utility loaders. They are commonly used by farmers, ranchers and private owners because of their compact size and versatility. A mini loader can even be used inside buildings! Some implements and tools may be attached to it to make it perform more tasks including carrying and transporting of light materials, transporting hay bales, lifting pallet crates, distributing feeds for livestock and landscaping jobs. It is a versatile machine that can adapt well to different tasks.

Some final words

While heavy wheel loaders are more expensive than their lighter and smaller counterparts, all types are a significant investment so make sure you select the best make and model that fits your purposes. Take your time to do the necessary research and look at all available options before making a decision to purchase. Some dealers may provide loaders for rent but in the long run, your total spend on rent can cost even more than when you purchase one for your use. It can help to discuss your requirements with a trusted dealer as they can give you advice on which type will be a smart and worthwhile investment.

Are Your References Are Working For You?

Today, every job seeker should include a current reference list as part of their career portfolio. There are many questions I am often asked about reference sheets and what they should include. So, I have prepared some suggestions to assist you in updating your reference list to ensure your references work for you.

First I must begin by saying that references do not belong in a resume. The list should be available in a separate document. Secondly, a reference or line somewhere on the resume saying, "References are Available Upon Request" or something similar to this, is also not necessary. If and when the hiring manager is in need of your reference sheet it will be asked for. Having the sheet ready in duplicate, along with your other career documents, and in an organized portfolio and available for your interview or next networking meeting illustrates your motivation and the importance to you in finding a new job.

Your reference sheet should include four to six contacts. Each contact should be relevant to your current career goals and should be able to reflect on achievements of your past. The references should be professional associates of some kind. One "friend" with credentials is usually acceptable. The contacts should be made of employers, co-workers, staff members, past employers, internship employers, college professors, association or volunteer leaders, and department heads.

Contact names that come from current or past employment do not always need to be immediate superiors. It might be a better choice for the position you are seeking or because of unfavorable history to use someone you worked closely with such as a district manager or other superior that you reported indirectly to. Including one or two co-worker references is a good way for potential employers to see whether you related well with coworkers, or were a team player who got along with collections. These references can provide a clue to your dependability, work ethics, organizational skills and more.

When deciding on your contact list always ask for permission before putting anyone on your list. Inform them of their type of job you are looking for and make sure they have no hesitation or conflict in being a contact for you. Provide clear guidelines as to what would and would not be appropriate information to share. Many contacts despite trying to be helpful, can get carried away during the referral and say too much. Develop a written outline with skills and achievements, projects, experiences you would appreciate the contact to mention. Make them aware that you would rather them not elaborate more than what you've asked of them. You want your references to work for you, preparing your contact is your best defense. On your reference sheet each contact should include name, title, company, address, and phone number.

As you progress through your job search keep your references aware of your progress. If you know they will be contacted soon send them a quick email or give them a quick call to prepare them. Once you have found a new job do not forget to send each of your contacts a hand written note of thanks or offer a small gift of appreciation. Even if the contact was never used during your job search it is still a nice to thank them for their willingness to assist you and is very professional.

Expect potential employers to contact those on your reference list. Also expect them to verify your college information, title information of some or all jobs from your past even if they are not on your reference list. Other checks that occur regularly are licenses, certificates and other qualifiers; projects you worked on, volunteer work, and military backgrounds. I have even heard of an increase in personal credit checks of potential employees. This is why it is so important to be honest in your career documents; usually it is grounds for immediate cancellation if you have been found falsifying information.

Lastly, be aware that the next time you are in the market for a new job; make sure you complete the referral collection process all over again. Do not assum old contacts will want to be on your list again or that they will be the right fit for future job searches. Be prepared and keep your references aware to ensure that they are working for you.
