What Fence Should I Get?

If you are looking to get a fence installed around your home or business, there is a lot to consider between all of the different types, brands, colors, sizes and designs. Before getting fence installations, you should ponder carefully over all of the different variables to ensure that you get the best fence for your situation.

Fence Types

Possibly the most important decision you have to make is what materials you want your fence to be made of. There are a few major types. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages:

Wood fences. These are the most classic type of fence and will give your home a more natural or rustic feel. They can be stained to look more wooded or painted white. Although they look the most prestigious, they are difficult to maintain, since wood absorbs water and the paint or stain can fade.

Vinyl or PVC fences. If wooden fences are more work than you would like to do, PVC fences have absolutely no maintenance required. They are nonporous and will not warp or fade. Another advantage is that if a post does break, you can simply replace the single post instead of a large section of the fence. They are available in many colors and designs and can even look like wooden fences.

Aluminum and Chain link fences. These are metal fences that allow for more visibility than the previous two.

Fence Brands

Eastern White Cedar. This is a popular brand of wooden fences and is very resistant to water damage. It has natural oils that protect it from mold and rot. It is environmentally friendly and the fences are all biodegradable.

Jereth. This is one of the most trusted names in aluminum fences. They are a family owned and operated business that has been around for over half a century. Their high quality fences are manufactured domestically while many companies have factories that make cheap products overseas.

Grand Illusions. This brand manufactures PVC fences in a wide variety of colors and designs. They make wood designs which are popular because you get the beautiful look of wood along with the easy maintenance of PVC.

Fence Designs

Gates. Don’t forget to design areas for gates, preferably at least two. You don’t want to have to go around the entire fence to enter or exit your yard. Make sure that there are clear pathways leading to the gates and that at least one of the gates is large enough to carry large items, such as machinery or furniture.

Laws. Different towns have different regulations for construction. Make sure that you plans are all up to code.

Aesthetics. Look around and try to find a fence that matches your landscape.

Traveling to Brisbane is a great idea for a vacation. It is a beautiful location. The area is chock full of attractions and things to do and see. There are plenty of places to stay such as hotels, motels and even backpacking hostels. These options are available to any budget.

Hotel Search Engines Finding The Best Rates For Accommodations

Going on vacation will occasionally be a choice between going or staying home for financial reasons. You should not neglect that holiday and you still can accomplish this. Locating the finest lodging in favor of our desires at a cost that we can afford will be sometimes be the most difficult part of taking that time away. You’ll find it much less difficult than you assume.

Ordinarily you get on the web and go to your favorite hotel search engine. At that time we search for the finest lodging that you can afford and make up our conclusion from there. At various times to acquire a hotel room which we can afford the money for we downgrade if price an issue. Unfortunately this could affect the whole holiday. Very possibly the room that you pick could include sub average standards or the services aren’t just what we sought after to begin with.

How could we place ourselves to find the cheapest charges? Utilize a hotel aggregator, it is like a super hotel search engine. What these online hotel search sites really achieve will be to compare the rates from the many hotel search sites at one time. In this method anyone can search out the finest lodgings at the lowest fees. It will result in a much less complication to unearth the best resort deals with this method.

This is how this type of hotel search site performs. Let us suppose we will be going on a voyage to New York, then we go on the internet. At this particular situation we will understand that this particular sort of hotel search site features five hundred rooms offered present. Now let us obtain a better understanding of that ordinary hotel search site. On behalf of the identical mentioned search at hand might barely be situated 350 hotels. To start with many more hotel selections for you to research which means your possibilities on savings has enlarged.

In what way? You’ll find it is actually extremely simple, each online hotel provider has accommodations from merely those resorts which they would like to do business with. But if the hotel in question doesn’t present the online hotel provider a decent price in which they can be profitable, therefore we won’t have the option to locate it there. Many of the hotel search engines furthermore include exclusive offers with the hotels themselves. If you may get them further business they might actually present the hotel search engine a reduced rate for that hotel room. Consequently by means of this particular consideration added in you might in reality have to investigate many of the online hotel providers to search out the cheapest price.

Although with this particular type of online hotel provider this predicament simply doesn’t exist. It essentially brings one down to receiving the cheapest cost. So with just one search we will be capable to unearth the savings you considered necessary during the first place. This particular hotel locater is many hotel search sites in 1.

Now this is where getting hotel suites can be still additionally entertaining this manner. Imagine the wishes and the amenities you really want. Whether it be a swimming pool or in room jacuzzi and you can enter in your budget amount and also the period of your visit. At once you will get the available rooms that match the criteria. Then start to add one different amenity at a time and those results will modify to indicate what is obtainable.

A lot of times we can stumble onto an 5 star hotel because of the hotel aggregator instead of the equivalent fee of a 4 star accommodation on one of the normal online hotel providers for almost the similar fee. But if any person asks me and I take the alternative, sure I will reserve the better room if it is reasonably priced. Who wouldn’t?

Affordable Housing Inspection Rules

There are a lot of rules that govern affordable housing development. Some are federally mandated and apply to all developments. Others are determined on a state-by-state basis. One of the state-by-state rules determines how, and how often, affordable housing developments are inspected.

The state of Indiana recently incorporated new inspection rules for projects built with Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA) funds. This includes HOME and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.

During the course of the award period, projects must be physically inspected twice. The first inspection must take place once the documented scope of work is completed, and is intended to address issues that may arise prior to the IHCDA inspection.

A “third party” is required to conduct the first inspection. If award recipient employees completed the work to be inspected, the inspection must be conducted by someone not affiliated with the recipient. If, however, an outside contractor completed the work, the inspection can be conducted by award recipient staff. Regardless, the third party must be a licensed home inspector.

An IHCDA Community Development Inspector must conduct a second inspection once all award-funded construction is complete. The Inspector will also visit the site prior to the inspection and all owners and/or tenants must be properly notified. The IHCDA Inspector will look specifically for state and local building code violations. At the time of the final inspection, all documentation pertaining to the first inspection must be provided to the IHCDA Inspector, including any issues that were discovered and corrective action that was taken to address them. The IHCDA is currently incorporating these changes into the Award/Compliance manuals for all affected programs.

Because inspection rules vary by state, people interested or involved in affordable housing development are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the rules governing developments for the state in which they’re working.

Building a House in a Hurricane-Prone Area – Lessons From Hurricane Andrew

Anyone who lived in Miami-Dade County in 1992 experienced first-hand what a Category 5 hurricane looks like. Although where I lived was not particularly hard-hit, even though there was a great deal of damage to the trees and landscaping, the next day I was walking around the devastated areas of the south side of the county.

Architects, engineers, and the building departments of the area learned much from the experience. As a whole almost no gas stations or screen-enclosures were left standing. In most homes which had block walls on the ground floors and wood framing on the second floors, at least parts of the second floors were gone. I saw one house where the front façade on the second floor was left, but as I walked around the yard to the back, all the other three walls on the second floor were gone with the clothes and furniture littered all over the yard. In some areas the majority of house lost all the windows and doors, in addition to the roof finish. In others, even the roof sheathing and sometimes even some of the wood trusses were gone.

For about 6 months it looked as though South Miami-Dade had been bombarded continuously and we were in the middle of a war zone. In actuality the houses of the county had gone to war with Hurricane Andrew and lost.

Six months after Hurricane Andrew a report came out citing the reasons why houses failed during the hurricane. These were simple enough:

  • Unbraced gabled ends of the roof framing trusses failed
  • Corners of the house lacked the required steel reinforcing which were supposed go from the foundation to the tie-beam
  • The roofing paper and tiles or shingle blew away and it rained in the house
  • The wood roofing sheathing was not attached corrected and it blew away
  • The roof trusses were not attached correctly to the time beam and were displaced
  • The connections between steel members or wood members were inadequate and the structure failed
  • The windows and doors were not properly attached to the surrounding concrete block walls and blew away
  • The windows did not have shutters and the glass was broken, the high winds would get into the house and do great damage
  • The second floor wood framing was not properly attached to the tie-beam at the top of the ground floor and was destroyed

So what did we learn from the Andrew experience?

I think the most valuable lesson was the importance of the attachments or connections from one material to a different material, for example, from wood to concrete or metal to wood, etc. The weakest link can expose a whole house to disaster.

Now all the straps that connect from the wood trusses to the concrete beam are long and strong enough to sustain hurricane wind forces. The favorite construction has become reinforced masonry where the concrete block cells are grouted every 4′-0″ or so with a steel reinforcing bar which goes from the footings to the tie-beam. In addition, all window or door openings in the exterior walls must have the same reinforced cells with the steel bars at each side of the apertures.

The favorite roof configuration is the hip roof. Because of the way it’s built, it is naturally self-bracing. All gable ends are braced with cross-bracing, at a minimum at each of the last two trusses at each gable. Many times what kept a gable end from collapsing during Hurricane Andrew was one 2 x 4 bracing. Imagine such a small piece of wood made all the difference.

The code now requires that all new windows, even in just an addition, must either have shutters or be impact-resistant. Impact resistant windows are a great invention. The glass is laminated in layers, similar to the way plywood is made out of layers. Impact-resistant windows are so strong that you can take a hammer to them and not break them. However, unlike regular windows, if a piece of glass should break, the glass alone cannot be replaced. The window must be replaced in its entirety.

The way the roofing membrane and the wood sheathing are attached to the wood trusses below has been improved as well.

Where wood to wood connections in a trellis or pergola prior to the hurricane were installed intuitively, the code now requires real structural calculations. So are calculations required for the connections between each truss and the concrete tie-beam below. Nothing is left to the imagination. The signed and sealed calculations are presented along with full structural plans at the time of plan review for permitting.

Although great strides have taken place over the last 16 years, there are still construction techniques which could be improved. For me there is no better construction system than a concrete slab roof. Because they are difficult to build on a slope, and therefore expensive, we continue to building roofs with wood trusses, sheathing, roofing paper, and shingle of tile finish. This system is still very susceptible to damage in high velocity wind conditions. Hopefully, someday someone will come up with a better, practical system which will not succumb to hurricanes that easily.

How to Replace a Nissan Altima Radiator

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size automobile manufactured by Nissan. The Nissan Altima is available in North America as well as other markets and it larger and more powerful and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less than the Nissan Maxima. The very first Altima rolled off the assembly line on June 15, 1992, as a 1993 model.

The Nissan Altima is a popular and economic mid-size car that has been a top choice of consumers since its introduction in 1993. Due to the fact that it provides more room, more power and more amenities than its competitors, the Nissan Altima continues to gain top reviews from consumers.

There are many issues that can cause your Nissan Altima radiator to fail. Some of the most common radiator problems range from a cracked or leaky radiator, to a build-up on your radiator caused from infrequent cleaning or flushing. These situations can quickly grow into larger problems for your cooling system and your engine. With a bit of mechanical knowledge and skill, you can easily replace the car radiator on your Nissan Altima. The purpose of the radiator in your Nissan Altima is to keep the engine from overheating. If the radiator is damaged or worn out, you must replace it to prevent expensive engine damage.

Here are the steps that you can follow to successfully replace your Nissan Altima radiator. First, loosen the plug on the bottom of the radiator and drain the engine coolant into a resealable container. If your Nissan Altima is equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the cooler hoses and plug them to prevent leaks. Disconnect the negative battery cable, unhook the fresh air duct and continue taking off the upper radiator hose and the lower radiator hose. Inspect the radiator hoses for signs of wear and replace the hoses if you see visible bulging or cracks.

Remove the air conditioner condenser and radiator core. Pull the radiator out of the vehicle and unhook the fan assembly and attach it to the new radiator. Install the new radiator, with fan assembly, into the vehicle. Install the new radiator into the vehicle. If applicable, reinstall the air conditioner condenser, radiator core and automatic transmission cooler hose.

Finally, replace the upper and lower radiator hoses and reconnect the negative battery cable. Make sure to fill the radiator with a mixture of antifreeze and distilled water. Attach the radiator cap somewhat loosely and start the engine. Let the engine run for a few minutes always checking for proper fluid levels. Adjust the fluid level by adding more if necessary and then put the radiator cap on securely.

Experiments For High Power Green Laser Pointers

Doing experiments with green laser pointers can be both educational and a load of fun. This article provides an outline of a number of good experiments for green laser pointers.

Conducting experiments with laser pointers is both educational and loads of fun. Listed below are some basic experiments you can perform with green laser pointers. Please when experimenting, always keep safety foremost in mind.

Thermal experiments

Burning plastic

This is the easiest of the thermal experiments to perform and only requires a 55mW laser pointer.

-Use thin black plastic such as shopping bags.

-Hold the laser pointer very close to the bag and rest it on something solid to keep the beam steady.

-The first sign of success will be tendrils of smoke from the point you are aiming at.

-When you’ve finished, holding the plastic up to the light should reveal small pin pricks burnt into the plastic.

Bursting or popping balloons

Laser pointers of roughly 75mW or higher in power can pop dark or black colored balloons.

-Dark or black balloons are best because they are better at absorbing green light. White or green balloons will have too much reflection and the absorbed energy will not be enough to pop the balloon. If you don’t have any dark/black balloons, you can use a sharpie (black texta) to put a black spot on the balloon that you can aim the laser at.

-Make sure the balloon is fully blown up because if it is not blown up properly and lacks tension, popping it will be difficult.

Lighting matches

This is harder to do than popping balloons and requires a minimum of 95mW or higher laser pointer.

-As with balloons, the color of the match head is also important. If the color is too light such as white, too much energy from the laser beam will be reflected and there will not be enough energy remaining to light the match. Black or dark red matches are ideal. You can also use a sharpie to darken the match head.

-Make sure both the laser pointer and the match are fixed and not moving

-don’t hold the laser pointer too close to the match or you may get ash and debris on the laser pointer lens.

Cutting black electrical tape

Another one of the more difficult burning experiments that requires a laser pointer of at least 95mW in power.

-Attach the loose end of the tape to a fixed point such as the edge of a table then leave roughly 10 cm of tape with the tape roll suspended at the end. The tape roll will create tension that makes cutting the tape easier.

-keep the laser steady and aimed at the edge of the tape.

Experiments with mirrors can range from the very basic to the very advanced and are only limited by your imagination. The advantage of mirror experiments is that there are no specific power requirements and low powered laser pointers will be just as effective (but less visible) as the higher powered laser pointers.

Laser accordion

Very easy to do and can be visually very impressive.

-Carefully line up two rectangular mirrors of similar size parallel to each other.

-change the angle of the laser pointer to the mirror to create more beams between the mirrors

Measure your pulse

Sounds difficult but is actually very easy to do.

-attach a very small mirror (no more than 4cm in diameter) directly over the inner part of your wrist where pulse is normally measured. Use a small round object like blue tack or chewing gum (messy but effective) to attach the mirror to your wrist.

-reflect the laser pointer beam of the mirror onto a smooth surface such as a wall at least 4 meters away.

-if the laser pointer and your wrist are held steady, the rhythmic movements in the reflected image on the wall will be your pulse.

Security alarm

This experiment is an extension of the laser accordion experiment.

-at a security point such as an exit/doorway or a hall way, line up two rectangular mirrors and create a grid of laser beams. The beam should be aimed to fall on a photoelectric detector that is connected to an alarm.

-once the beam is broken, the alarm will be activated.

-IR lasers could be used to create an invisible security alarm.

Cool beam effects

There are a number of experiments ranging from very simple to quite advanced that can create beautiful beam effects such as the ones listed below.

The crystalline structure of ice is full of hollows, gaps and imperfections that will scatter and diffract the laser beam.

Laser drawing and writing

-make sure the exposure time on your camera is at least 2 seconds

-aim the laser pointer beam at a smooth non reflective surface with a good contrast

-then use the beam point to write/draw pictures

-use smoke or fog to provide additional effect

Bend light

Using wave propagation theory, you can actually bend light from your laser pointer and see it clearly.

-Aim the laser at a smooth surface 4 meters away such as a white wall

-Use an object with a very precise smooth edge such a new razor blade.

-partially block the laser beam with the edge and note the interference patterns produced.

-the patterns will not be flat or smooth. Instead there will be a diffraction pattern

Moving objects

No kidding, high power laser pointers have a beam powerful enough to move objects. At least they can move the vanes in a Crookes radiometer.

-you need a Crookes radiometer that has a complete vacuum in the globe and the vanes have virtually frictionless support.

-aim the laser pointer beam at the silver side of the vanes and they should start to move very rapidly.

Beam splitting

There are various methods and numerous pieces of equipment that can split the beam of a alaser. This one of the simplest methods.

-Using microscope slides, split the laser beam by angling the beam on the slide.

-For really spectacular results, you can use a diffraction grating.

Time tunnel

Laser pointers can be used to create a light tunnel reminiscence of Doctor Who and several other famous science fiction programs

-you attach a mirror to an electric motor at a slight angle.

-aim the laser beam on the mirror when the motor is turned on and the laser beam will spin around itself to create a laser cone or tunnel

Cold Sore Home Remedy

Is there a cold sore home remedy that really works?

Curing cold sores is difficult if not next to impossible and no treatment works for everyone. For example one person will have good results with a cold sore home remedy while another person will not.

One cold sore home remedy is to try and dry out the sore. Another approach is to keep the sore moist and deprive it of oxygen. And still a third is to dry out the sore and then keep it moist.

There are many cold sore home remedy methods using normal household supplies that do not fall into the above three categories.

The method of drying out the sore involves applying some sort of astringent to the site. There are many different products that accomplish this. Most of them contain alcohol or a solvent that dries out the skin.

Most of the time one would use ice and/or open the blisters with a needle before using these products. Here is a partial list of products that dry the sore, starting with the most logical and proceeding to the hard to believe:

Rubbing alcohol

Finger nail polish remover (acetone)

Hydrogen peroxide

Hand sanitizer

Bath soap

Sulfur from unburned match heads

Jack Daniels

If you want to try the cold sore home remedy option of depriving the cold sore from oxygen and keeping it moist, the following is a partial list of products that will do this:

Campho phenique

Aloe Vera

Chap stick

Lip balm

Ear wax

Your own skin oil

The procedure for this is to dry the sore out until a scab forms and then keep the scab moist so it doesn’t crack or bleed while it heals.

Drying the sore is probably a better cold sore home remedy than keeping it moist.

Almost all of the ‘over the counter’ preparations keep the area moist. Usually this is not effective in shortening the episode.

Over 61% of the people reporting, said that the commercial products were not effective, or even made the outbreak worse.

Next is a partial list of cold sore home remedies that don’t really fall into either of the preceding categories. However, they are reported to be helpful in treating cold sores.

Chopped garlic, or garlic pieces

Tea tree oil

Green tea bag

Frozen tea bag

Dried Instant coffee made into a paste with a little water

Pepto Bismal

Whole milk

Eucalyptus oil

Preparation H

Green Papaya Sap

Benadryl applied topically with lip balm

Calamine lotion

Many cold sore home remedies combine several of these products which can be complicated, time consuming and painful.

Here is an extreme example of a real cold sore sufferer’s home remedy:

· First, open the blisters with a needle.

· Then apply apple cider vinegar with salt. (Yes, it is painful.)

· After 20 minutes apply lemon with salt until the stinging stops.

· Next, put toothpaste on it overnight.

· In the morning apply Vaseline, followed by more vinegar and salt.

· After that dab it with milk.

· In 20 minutes use rubbing alcohol on it.

· In 30 minutes cover it with finger nail polish remover.

· Finally crush a clove of garlic and hold it to the sore. (Yes, it stings.)

· By this time the sore is gone and you can cover the redness with lip stick.

Another example from a real world sufferer:

· Apply bleach with a cotton ball. (Yes, it burns.)

· Then hold a wet green tea bag on the site.

· Next soak a Centrum multi-vitamin tablet, crush it into paste and apply for 20 minutes.

· Then you end up with a scab so put some cream on it.

Do Cold Sore home remedies really work?

Most of these home remedies are reported to shorten the episode, However they focus on applying something to the sore after it has already started.

So the best that can be expected is to shorten the healing time and perhaps relieve some of the pain. Be aware that some of them actually increase the pain.

There are many other home remedies, but you can see how involved the procedure for curing a cold sore can be. It takes a lot of time to treat a cold sore this way and usually a person only shortens the episode by a few days. However, these treatments are more effective than ‘over the counter’ products.

Vitamins and supplements are available which can reduce or even eliminate outbreaks, making a cold sore home remedy unnecessary.

There are better ways to control cold sore outbreaks and you may even be able to stop them before they start.

Egyptian Revival Architecture

Egyptian Revival is an architectural style which makes use of the motifs and imagery of Ancient Egypt. The ancient Greek architecture used the pyramid shape and required huge rocks in order to build the building. If you will look at the pyramid which is among the Seven Wonders of the World then you will find out that the Egyptians were really rich and they used to build the buildings which looked like being a huge luxurious place for living.

Egyptian Architecture before Napoleon

One of the most important examples which your will find related to the Egyptian revival architecture is probably Bernini’s obelisk in the Piazza Bavona at Rome. Others may be found at Belan, County Kildare and Dangan, County Meath. The Casteltown Folly in County Kildare is among the best known master piece related to the Egyptian revival architecture.

You can say that the Egyptian buildings have been used for different purposes Egyptian buildings had also appeared as garden follies. The most complicated was perhaps the one built by the Duke of Württemberg in the estate of the Château de Montbéliard. In this you will find an Egyptian bridge across which guests walked to reach an island with an Egyptian swing and an elaborate Egyptian “bath house”. The building featured a billiards room and a “bagnio”. It was premeditated by the duke’s court architect, Jean Baptiste Kleber.

Some of the important buildings which were built with the help of the Egyptian revival architecture are as follows:

1.1820 pyramid, memorial to Elizabeth, Lady Rufane on Donkin Hill at Old Portuguese Algoa Bay in what is now South Africa.

2.The 1833 First Presbyterian Church (Sag Harbor) by Minard Lafever, a rare example of an Egyptian revival church.

3.The 1835 Philadelphia County Prison (demolished in 1968), design by architect Thomas U Walter.

4.The Tombs and 1838 prison and court complex in New York City.

5.The 1845 Hobart Synagogue, Tasmania, Australia.

6.The 1840 railroad station in New Bedford, Massachusetts was done in Egyptian Revival style.

7.1840 gates of the Granary Burying Ground in Boston by Isaiah Rogers.

8.College of Cape Town, South Africa, now the University of Cape Town.

9.The 1843 gates and gatehouses of Mount Auburn Cemetery by Jacob Bigelow.

10.The 1845 massive brownstone entry gates of the Grove Street Cemetery at Yale by architect Henry Austin.

11.1845, the Egyptian Building of the Medical College of Virginia.

12.The 1846 First Baptist Church of Essex, Connecticut.

13.The 1846-8 Old Synagogue at Canterbury, England.

14.The 1848 Washington Monument is an obelisk. It originally featured doors with cavetto cornices and winged sun disks, later removed.

I really feel that these are some of the examples of the buildings which used the Egyptian revival but I would definitely say that you will find all the buildings which have been built in this style to be gorgeous.

The Importance of a Healthy Brain and Nervous System

The brain is considered the control center of the body with the nervous system acting as the highway, delivering messages from the brain to different parts of the body. These vital systems of the body are being performed even when the body and other bodily systems are in a resting state. Signals sent from the brain through the nervous system control all body functions such as thoughts, the way you move your body, and even how well you learn and remember things.

How well these systems are working within your body can dramatically influence mood, attitude and even your safety. For instance, when the hand touches a hot surface, the brain sends a message to that part of the body telling it to retract the hand. If these systems are not working to their full potential, things such as reaction times are affected and slowed.

The ability to focus is also controlled by the brain. It is human nature to have multiple priorities running through your mind at all times. This makes it difficult to focus on the task at hand, which may require your complete and undivided attention. The healthier these body systems are kept, the better they will work for you.

When these systems are working to their full potential, every part of the body benefits immediately. The ability to focus will be increased, mood will improve, and even food will be digested faster. As the productivity a specific systems are increased a domino effect is created; every body part is working together to heal and maintain all other organs and systems. Brain and nervous system health can even affect your immune system.

The brain and nervous system, like any body part, will begin to become more susceptible to disease and decreased functioning if they are not properly maintained. Like a car needs gasoline, oil and regular tune-ups, your brain and nervous system need specific amounts of vitamin and nutrients to continue to work properly.

One disease of the brain that has been increasing in the past 50 years is Alzheimer’s Disease. This is an irreversible illness that has a slow and negative progression. Alzheimer’s is most common in people over the age of 60 and results in the destruction of memory, thinking skills and even the ability to perform the simplest of tasks. In its ending stages, victims of Alzheimer’s Disease may not even have the ability to remember the faces or names of people that have always been in their lives and even their own children. Although some studies have led certain people to believe that Alzheimer’s may be hereditary, all studies show that it can be avoided with proper care.

Synaptol has all natural ingredients that help maintain brain and nervous system health with no side effects. Functions that will be improved include a stronger immune system, maximized attention span and focus and reduced hyperactivity resulting in a greater ability to focus and a more relaxed and calm demeanor.

Table Tennis – A Brief History

In spite of the fact that there are actually  table  tennis tournaments all over the world, especially in China where  table  tennis is a major sport, the game itself isn’t really taken seriously by many people. We could debate on the why of this until our sun goes nova but we’ll leave that debate for another time.

Table  tennis, or what we affectionately refer to as “ping pong”, began as a mild diversion. It was viewed with the same lack of seriousness as lawn tennis and badminton. It became popular in England in the late 19th century. It was known under its present name of  table  tennis and ping pong as well as gossima and whiff-whaff. The name ping pong was introduced by J. Jaques and Sons. The game was named ping pong because of the sound that the ball made when striking the  table  when hit. At the time ping pong paddles were not yet invented. Instead they used vellum bats. In a very short time the game became a very fashionable craze. During the period, there were many paintings made of people playing  table  tennis, usually in a home setting.

By the early 1900s,  table  tennis had already started to take on many of the characteristics of the game that we know and love today. However, it was still seen by most people as after dinner entertainment rather than as a serious sport. During this period publications found it necessary to warn people about what kind of attire they should wear when playing this game, such as not to wear tight fitting clothing. These were obviously meant as satire because of the fact that nobody took the game seriously.

Between 1905 and 1910 the game became very popular in Europe until it finally made its way to Japan, China and Korea where  table  tennis has become a way of life. Today, more than 4 million people in China alone play  table  tennis and it is seen as a very serious and competitive sport.

In the meantime, after finding its way to the Asian countries,  table  tennis started to fade from the European scene but in the early 1920s it was again revived in England. By that time the name “ping pong” had actually become a registered trademark of the game. However, the term  table  tennis was still retained for the more serious organizations where  table  tennis was actually played for sport.

Over the next 60 years  table  tennis actually developed into a world wide sport but never really got the recognition that other major sports had gotten during the time except in the Asian countries. The game itself has remained relatively the same since the early days with the exception of the vellum bats being replaced by what we call ping pong paddles. The paddles themselves have gone through a few modifications as far as materials they are made out of but for the most part have remained unchanged from their early days.

Table  tennis may never get the respect that some say it deserves, but most people who play it do admit that it is a lot of fun, and also very hard.

Erosive Lichen Planus

My problems started when I was 42 with an initial flare up of vulval pain on Christmas Eve 2003, although looking back I had had mouth soreness and ulceration for about a year prior to this. I went to my GP three or four times and was treated for thrush. Eventually she referred me to a gynecologist who found nothing wrong. He thought the pain may be related to a back injury and referred me to an orthopedic specialist in 2004, I had an MRI scan, gynecological scan and x-rays of lumber area and many swabs – all test results showed nothing abnormal. I was repeatedly treated for thrush ‘just in case’ without evidence of infection.

In the spring of 2005 after many trips to 3 different GP’s and in desperation – almost suicidal – I took on the responsibility for finding out what was wrong with me. I researched into possible conditions, including lichen planus. When I read a small paragraph of the symptoms in Dr Howard Glazer’s ‘The Vulvodynia Survivor’s Guide’ it was as though a light bulb lit in my head – I KNEW this was what was wrong. But my theory was dismissed by my GP as it is usually only itchy not painful (true for the non erosive versions of LP).

Nevertheless I was referred to a dermatologist and an oral specialist who both confirmed visually a diagnosis of vulval and oral (erosive) lichen planus and I started treatment at end of July 2005 with high potency topical steroid and oral steroidal spray.

Time from onset of vulval symptoms to diagnosis and start of treatment: 19 months.

Number of GP’s seen: 3

Number of consultants seen: 4

LP is life changing. During a flare up, I can’t sit down for long without pain, cannot lie down for long in one position and have difficulty managing long journeys. Sex is painful, wearing trousers often impossible, can’t eat spicy, citric or hot food etc.

This often leads to emotional distress and depression. The worst thing of all is the isolation. LP is a disease you, your family and your friends have probably never heard of. You feel isolated and in pain. You ask the questions ‘why me’ and ‘what have I done to deserve this’. You shut out the ones you love, because they don’t – can’t understand the pain you feel. This is why UKLP was set up, to provide support to those living with LP.

I have periods of flare ups and long remissions from the symptoms, but I know that LP will be with me for life.

CO2 Tanks

Carbon dioxide, also known as CO2, is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable and slightly acidic liquefied gas. It is sold commercially worldwide under pressure in steel cylinders or bottles called tanks.

CO2 tanks can be used for a variety of things. Most popular uses include carbonated beverages, beer making, paintball guns, medical-grade usage, metal fabrication applications, catering, and fire extinguishing.

CO2 tanks need to be hydro-tested every five years, and the test date should be noted on the top of the canister. CO2 tanks need to be taken to a DOT certified hydro-testing facility if they need filled. Once certified, the certification number is stamped onto the tank.

Fire extinguishers

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers contain CO2 under extreme pressure. In fact, there is so much pressure in these tanks that bits of dry ice may shoot out of them when you engage it for usage. CO2 fire extinguishers are only good to be used on flammable liquid and electrical fires, Class B and Class C fires. Good places to keep a CO2 fire extinguisher include a laboratory, a mechanical room, a kitchen, or a storage area where liquid flammables are kept. CO2 fire extinguishers are better for electrical fires.

Carbon dioxide is a refrigeration agent and is used to chill, freeze and protect the taste of your food products by maintaining correct temperature control. It reduces the need for preservatives in packaged food products and is a main factor in carbonated beverages.

Recreational Usage

CO2 is the cheapest noncombustible pressurized gas and is frequently used in the game of paintball, in airsoft guns and for blowing up bicycle tires. Many paintball stores or fields offer to test your CO2 tanks before you. Paintball CO2 tanks are usually small and are filled from a larger CO2 tank. Sporting goods stores are also good places to get your paintball CO2 tanks filled. Again, the filling of the tanks are performed by professionals.

Medical Usage

Carbon dioxide in its liquid phase provides sub-zero temperatures for surgical practices and cryotherapy. CO2 can also be added to pure oxygen to help promote breathing and to stabilize blood oxygenation.

Beer Kegs

A CO2 tank is hooked up to a beer keg system to dispense beer from the keg to your glass. CO2 is the chosen way to dispense beer because it will help keep the beer fresh, unlike air that may interact with and ruin your beer. The CO2 is stored in a high-pressure tank as a liquid. The CO2 helps the beer flow more readily from the keg and helps to carbonate the beer.

Handling your CO2 tank

Even though CO2 is noncombustible, you should still take certain precautions with your CO2 tank. Be sure to never throw or drop a CO2 tank. Keep the CO2 tanks away from extreme heat. Always secure the tank in the upright position. If there has been a leakage from the tank, make sure you ventilate after the leak is contained; then immediately take the tank to a DOT certified testing facility. Tanks should be stored in the coolest place possible, ideally in an area that is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Most importantly, keep an eye on the fill date printed on the top of the canister. The best practice is to not use the tank at all if the date is five years or more in the past.

CO2 tank usage, testing, discharging and refilling should not be taken lightly. They are very dangerous is mishandled to the point of death.

Decorative Painting on Ceiling

Decorative painting on the ceiling is not a new idea. Painted murals have depicted entire stories on the ceiling. For low ceilings, the trick is to paint it a light colour, if required, with designs that suggest space and height. Glossy paints are normally used to create a bright ambience. In case of painting, the techniques adopted can vary according to the location and requirement. From common scenes like blue sky with wispy white clouds to elaborate faux finishes, decorative painting can transform the look of your room. For artistic depictions of scenes and designs, hiring a professional artist is the best bet. Trompe l’oeil painting is also a fun way to add some zest to the room.

A plain ceiling, however small, can be made to look extremely stylish with wood rafters that traverse its length. Faux rafters of wood will add the elegance of a club’s lounge into the home space. This is particularly beautiful in a high ceiling room or lobby. Sometimes, a rustic look can also be created with the selection of bamboo rafters. This looks good with a cathedral ceiling.

There are other ways to beautify the ceiling with props like glass or mirrors. Both may be impractical when there kids at home. Cornices and crown mouldings, although they do not classify as ceiling decor, accentuate any ceiling with ease. Use them when you want to draw attention to the ceiling.

Ceiling medallions are quite popular in decor. They can be installed in high or low ceilings.
