What is Lymphatic Massage?

The use of massage as a healing therapy dates back centuries.
Lymphatic massage was developed in the 1930s and is a delicate form of massage that stimulates the body's lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system has no central pump and depends on muscle contracting through deep breathing, exercise and manual manipulation to move fluid.

Lymphatic massage utilizes a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. Immune system function can be significantly increased, improving metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins.

A strong immune system makes you feel balanced, happy and whole.

As with most massage, it is vital to drink lots of water after a lymphatic massage to flush away toxins that have been released.

Lymphatic Massage – What can it be used for?

Lymphatic massage has been used for years to enhance the quality of the skin.

o Lymphatic massage aids the increase of lymph flow. When the lymph is flowing as it should, cells are washed in fresh fluid making the skin look fresh and alive.

Lymphatic massage is also useful for people with sports injuries.

o When applied after neuromuscular massage, lymphatic massage helps to clear the tissue of debris and reduce the minor edema that can occur after deep tissue massage.

o Repeated lymphatic massage while healing from a sports injury can help to strengthen the tissue regeneration process by keeping the tissue as healthy as possible.

It is thought that lymphatic massage can also help the scarring process by enhancing circulation and immunity.

o Increased lymph flow around the scar stimulates damaged lymph vessels to heal.

o Increased lymph flow draws away toxins improving the health of the tissues.

Another common use of lymph drainage massage is in breast cancer cases.

o Women who have had axillary lymph nodes removed sometimes develop edema in their arm. As long as there is only minor swapping, then a massage therapist with a good knowledge of contraindication and some specific techniques can do a great amount of good.

Lymphatic Massage – Is it Safe?

For the most part lymphatic massage is safe. However as with all massage therapies there are some contra indications. For lymphatic massage specifically, these include acute inflammation, malignant tumors, thrombosis and major heart problems.

To get the best results from a lymphatic massage, seek out a suitably trained and qualified therapist.

The Benefit of Driving Lessons for Under 17 Year Olds

Have you a son or daughter who's under 17, but is desperate to get driving as soon as possible?

Some teenagers just can not wait to get behind the wheel of a car – for some it's the idea of independence that attracts them, but for others it's almost essential if they live somewhere without a regular bus service.

Helping a teenager learn to drive as soon as possible and starting them off on the road to being a safe driver can go hand in hand. It is an unfortunate fact that drivers aged between 17 and 24 are more likely to have an accident than any other age group. If parents take an interest in their teenager's desire to start driving and supporting them through they are likely to learn the correct skills to help keep them safe.

Many centers across the country offer driving lessons for under 17 year olds. Obviously all lessons are off road – some on private industrial estates or purpose build driving centers, and some on racetracks. All should be offered by qualified driving instructors. Some offer sample driving lessons – for example as a 'driving experience', but the best ones to go for offer a course of lessons which will mimic the actual on the road driving lessons which will become possible at the age of 17. The teenager will learn how cockpit drill, how to start the car and move off, clutch control, changing gear and being able to control the car in total safety. Apart from not being on the public roads, the driving lessons should be essentially identical to the real thing, and a driving record should be provided.

Sometimes it is possible to continue with the same instructor once that magic 17th birthday is reached, sometimes you might want to look for a new instructor with a different teaching style. Whoever you decide to go with, when the day arrives, and it's time for a first proper on the road lesson, the driving record will show the standard of driving the pupil has already reached.

Having already learned basic car control in a safe environment, being on the road surrounded by traffic will not be so scary – for example, the chances of stalling at a junction are reduced, and at least the knowledge of how to restart the car and pull off properly will already be there.

If possible, driving lessons for under 17 year olds should be taken monthly. I suggest that starting too early will result in boredom, as there's only so many things you can learn and practice without being able to drive on the public road. But six or more lessons can provide that all important preparation. Driving theory should be part of the instruction which should help prepare for the real driving test, and also more importantly for teenagers to understand the basics of road signs and instructions when they do get on the road. If you've ever tried playing a board game without reading the instructions you'll know that practical driving skills are nothing unless you understand the rules of the road.

When the day comes and it's your child's first real driving lesson you will be more relaxed knowing that they already have basic car control skills. Many police forces support driving lessons for under 17 year olds, believing that they give teenagers additional training. Most accidents happen due to the inexperience and over confidence of young drivers – having these extra lessons helps develop their knowledge of how to drive and cope with hazards.

Children learn by having role models. Parents who do not drink and drive, keep to speed limits and drive carefully and conscientiously with due regard for other road users will be passing these habits onto their children. We all want to keep our children safe, and it's terrifying the first time your child drives off, unaccompanied, in their own car. By preparing them as well as we can, by giving them support and as much tuition and driving training as possible we can lesson the chances of them being involved in a serious accident.

If your child is keen to learn to drive, driving lessons for under 17 year olds as a Christmas or birthday present is a great idea to help them achieve their ambition.

Advantages of Reclaimed Wood

The reclaimed wood or lumber is in high demand because of its limitless advantages as compared to new or non-season green wood or lumber. The obvious benefits of protecting nature and environment are the prime causes for choosing reclaimed wood. This is what we get when large, mature trees develop "Heart Wood". Heartwood is the solid, dense, and dark wood found in the heart of a tree.

The heartwood is old and does not play any part in nurturing or life functioning system of a tree, it does not supply nutrients and water from the ground to the branches and leaves. Heartwood is dry and harder, it is stable than the outer layers. Interestingly these smell sweet and have rich attractive color that impossible to find in new and un-matured trees. Reclaimed wood has an outstanding quality that is found in no other type of wood; they can be re-used for home interiors and making furniture.

Reclaimed wood is reduced from wood beams and flooring can be taken from old barns at rest in buildings, factories, and storehouses. The interior designers and architects value this for its rich and fragrance lumber, the history of lumber is of prime importance and has antique value. Cast Iron Stoves – An Eco Friendly Way to Warm Your House

The idea of a warm and beautiful living room really lights up our mood. Therefore, a fireplace almost becomes a must for every house. But did you know that the open fires, that we really enjoy is actually ineffective at converting the fuel energy to heat? Around 80 percent of the heat produced in an open fireplace escapes through the chimney. There is another option of heating your house and adding a centerpiece to your living room, they are known as stoves. There are different types of stoves available in Ireland from contemporary to traditional. Traditional models tend to be cast iron and are available in multi-fuel, wood only, oil, gas, pellet and electric. Each of these stoves serves a different purpose. But let us look more closely at the cast iron multi fuel stoves.

Do you still feel that an open fire looks appealing. Multi fuel Cast Iron Stoves will provide the same cozy feeling with better fuel efficiency. One can use wood, peat briquettes, coal, anthracite, wood and turf as fuel for the stoves. When you burn a kilogram of fuel on a stove they will produce 3 times more heat than the open fireplaces. Some drawbacks of an open fire are:

• An open fire draws up the air from the rooms and then fails to provide adequate heat to the room.

• Open fire eliminates the heat generated by other heat sources in your house by wasting them right up the chimney.

This way, you can also lower your central heating thermostat. Stoves also provides you with controls, where you can regulate the speed of burning and the temperature.

You can let the fire on in a low setting through the night and then strengthen it very easily in the morning. You will achieve an energy efficiency of around 70 to 80 percent (each stove has a different efficiency), and this will help you lower the house heating costs. Stoves are also eco-friendly as they emit only 0.25 percent of the carbon monoxide (this depends on what fuel you burn). You can easily fit these smaller stoves in your current fireplaces. Burning dry wood in stoves is carbon neutral

If you use wood as a fuel in the stove then make sure that the wood is dry. If the wood is dry, you will require a lesser amount of it to warm up your home. Formation of creosote, the residue from burnt wood, is less when you use damp wood, however it is much easier to break the dry wood into smaller pieces for your stove. A perfect location to dry the wood is your garage, wood shed or your cellar. If you are thinking of burning turf or wood – make sure its fully discharged out for maximum heat. Do not burn fuel with high moisture content, such as a damp peat or unseasoned timber will only result in a build up of tar in the stove and in the chimney.

These are some of the reasons why Cast Iron Stoves are a great addition to your house. They are fuel efficient, eco-friendly way of heating your home.

Best Exercise in the Gym Number 7 – The Plank

Lets start with telling you how to do the exercise, then you can keep reading to figure out why it is so necessary.

1. Grab an exercise mat to begin. You will want this because your forearms are going to be on the ground. It will give you cushion so that we can concentrate on working the abdominals and not about your forearms on a hard or rough surface.

2. Get down onto the ground. Place your forearms and the balls of your feet on the mat.

3. Lift yourself into position so that you are holding your body up. Keeping all your joints in line with each other – making your body flat.

4. Keep your shoulders over your elbows, breath and imagine you are holding your belly button to you spine. This will keep the abdominals activated and relieve stress from your shoulders and low back.

Start for 30 seconds. If you can do this easily increase your time.

Adding Variation:

Once you have reach more than 120 seconds it is time to make this exercise harder. The plank is very versatile and is one of the reasons it is a great exercise. You can add weight to you back to increase the difficulty, you can lift an arm – alternating sides – or the same with your feet. Hold each lift for 5-10 seconds before switching to the other side. You can also incorporate the Bosu for added secondary muscle. Put your feet or arms on the Bosu or even flip the bosu over so your arms or feet on the black side. Always start with a short hold and continue increasing as you can and get better and stronger.

* Since planks are an isometric exercise – one where you do not move – they are not recommended for people with high blood pressure. Consult a physician before trying this exercise.

As a general rule of thumb for exercises here is the repetition ranges you want to do based on your goals:

1-6 reps = Strength

6-15 reps = Muscle Size

15-25 = Muscle Toning

Why Planks?

As we have now discussed you can see that Planks are a great abdominal exercise. They do not incorporate your low back, hip flexors, or neck – which are common helpers in abdominal exercises. This allows you to isolate and really get that six pack or flat, tight stomach you have always wanted. Now get to it!

A Weight Loss Proposal Plan

You don’t need to buy a gym membership or expensive diet program to lose weight. All you need to do is have a plan and stick to it. First off, make the decision that you are going to exercise every day. You can combine cardiovascular and weight training into one exercise, or you can do cardio on one day and weight training on the next day. For cardiovascular exercise, you can go bike riding, power walking, running, roller skating, or get involved in a very physical sport. Good sports for cardio exercise would be basketball, racquetball, tennis or soccer. Swimming is also a great exercise for both cardiovascular and weight training since it tones your muscles.

For your weight training exercises, you once again do not need to spend a lot of money. You can buy a set of hand weights for less than twenty dollars to get you started. They will probably be sufficient for quite a while since it does take time to build both strength and endurance. It is important not to skip the weight training because it will put you at risk of losing muscle weight, which will make you weaker. A common misconception is that weight training will lead to visible muscle mass. Trust me; you will not turn into a body builder over night.

Learn what foods you should avoid eating, and avoid them. Generally speaking, you should avoid eating deep-fried foods, processed foods, foods containing refined sugar like baked sweets, chocolate, white bread, and anything that comes smothered in cheese (i.e. smothered cheese fries). Focus on eating healthy foods like fresh fruits, uncooked vegetables, whole grains breads, brown rice, lean meats and fish. Make sure you eat a mix of proteins (meat) and carbohydrates (pasta and breads).

For the best weight loss results, you should stop eating two or three meals a day, and try to eat six meals a day. Eating more often will help stop you from overeating because you won’t feel extremely hungry when you sit down. You should also make a conscience effort to drink at least 8 – 8 oz. glasses of water each day. The water will help prevent bloating and keep all your systems running smoothly. Now this plan won’t work over night. You should stick to the plan for at least eight weeks before making a decision on its effectiveness. Remember the basics and keep it simple. Weight loss does not need to be overly complicated.

Learn how to change the look of your old Christmas items and give them new life and a new color. How often would you like to change the colors you use at the holidays but do not want to spend the money? Spray paint is the answer here, it comes is wonderful colors and can be used for virtually any application. Christmas ornaments and garland and even Christmas trees can be transformed with a single can of spray paint.

Would you like to completely change the look and most importantly the color of Christmas this year? Now is the time and it is as easy as picking the new color and purchasing the exact color in spray paint. It is easy to find and easy to use.

Some examples of things I have transformed with new color. Say for example this year you would like to have copper color as the theme color for your Christmas decorations. Do you know that you can paint over any Christmas tree ornaments with paint? You can use spray paint or even the paints that come in 2 oz sizes at the craft stores. Do not be afraid very few things are off limits.

I had a small tree that I wanted to have a big impact in one area of my home (I love Christmas and it shows). That year I had the color blue as my accent color through the house in my decorations. I took an amazing color of blue metallic spray paint and painted my small artificial Christmas tree. It was amazing; I sprayed the tips with spray glue and put the white iridescent snowflakes on the tips, adding small clear lights. I took some of my small ornaments and repainted them shades of blue and white. Taking others and painting them shiny silver. The only money spent was for the spray paint.

If you have plastic garland guess what there is spray paint that is specially made for plastic and works well to transform plastic garland to any color that you want this season. Wreathes that are not the color you want simply spray them with the color that works, it is as easy as that.

I often by routes of accent garland from Halloween several days after, it is usually 90% off and in the color orange. Usually it is not my color, (I have been big into copper for a couple years), and so I just find the spray paint color that matches what I want. I spray the strands then I use them as accents in my arrangements, on the tree or in candle arrangements for the table or even I make beautiful wreaths out of them. The cost is under two dollars for yards of garland in my color.

The only limitation is your imagination; you can also use this technique on fresh greens from the yard. Have fun, keep the costs to a minimum and have a magnificent custom Christmas.

Stair Renovation Made Easy

Many homeowners and do-it-yourselfers would like to change their plain, carpeted staircase into a beautiful oak stair that would add elegance and style to their home. This could be a very expensive endeavor. Or with the right products and a helping hand from your stair expert, it could prove reliably inexpensive.

Changing rented treads to red oak or maple is a process that has been clarified by the new RetroTread ™ from Young Manufacturing. Depending on your existing tread design, these tread caps can be placed over the existing treads with minimal modifications. In most cases, removing the old treads is not necessary, which saves a great deal of time and money.

The unique design of RetroTread ™ provides strength at the nosing while maintaining the same thickness of the removed carpet for a uniform riser height and code compliance. The riser height is an important safety issue which is why a standard 1 "thick tread can not be used. The longer it is necessary to replace the entire stair. Now, with RetroTread ™, in most cases, a new staircase can be easily realized by the agreed Do-It-Yourselfer.

The balusters or pickets can be upgraded in much the same way. The outdated square balusters can be replaced with square top balusters with a turned design. Again, this can be accomplished without removing or replacing the handrail. Simply by using the same bottom holes and by replacing the fillet in the plowed rail (or in some applications by using the same holes in the handrail) the balusters can be easily installed, without rail replacement.

For the rich look of wrought iron, a new product from Crown Heritage called the Transformer System works in much the same way as the wood baluster replacement in that removal of the handrail is not required. A demonstration video at http://www.crownheritage.com shows how easy it is to upgrade from wood to iron balusters.

All of these upgrades can be achieved by the DIY or local stair builder. Your stair part supplier can help you with any questions and walk you through the installation process.

Nikon Remote – ML-L3 – Review

I received this for Christmas this year. What a handy little gadget.
The NB-3L is the infrared remote for Nikon cameras that support remote shutter release. It lets you snap the shutter from a distance.
Why would you need this? Well for a few reasons. Situations where you want everyone to be in the picture (no one has to step out to take the photo) and situations where you do not want to press the shutter yourself because it will cause motion of the camera and "camera shake" in your photos.
The "prevent camera shake" use is as follows. The lighting is dim and you need to be as stable as possible, so you set the camera on a table, banister, rock, or whatever. Unfortunately you still need to press the shutter down and you can accidently "jar" the camera and cause the image ot blur. If you have the handy little remote you just use it. You can even have your hands just centimeters away if the camera is perched precariously and you think it will fall.

Size Matters

This thing is small. It is incredibly thin and looks like one of those items you will lose in about two seconds. Fortunately, it comes with a little velcro pouch that can attach to your shoulder strap so you have easy access and will always be tempted to put the remote back in the pouch instead of in your pocket.

The remote only has one button which controls the shutter. You need to go into the settings of your camera and set it to be controlled by the remote. For the Nikon D70s, this is the same settings options where you change between "single shot" or "continuous shooting". You can select "remote shooting" as well. One annoying thing I found is that if the camera goes into "power saving" mode after 15 seconds that it defaults back to shutter button mode so the remote does not work anymore. I'm sure you can change this, but I have yet to find it yet. If you know how, please post a comment.
There is also a timer remote option so that you can trigger the timer with the remote. Good for situations where you would be a bit rushed to sneak back into the photo after pressing the shutter.

I'm not sure the exact range. They claim it is 16.4 feet, but I triggered it from 30 feet away no problem when I first got it. Maybe this was because it was a new battery. You just have to point the thing straight at the camera though. I found there was not much forgiveness if you were pointed elsewhere.

It comes with one of those little lithium ion CR2025 batteries. The thin kind that goes in watches and such.

To Get It Working

Basically nothing. Take the plastic battery protector out of the remote. Then set your camera to Remote shooting mode and snap away.

Final Verdict

I would recommend this for anyone. It is more of a gimmick and useful for those odd-ball shots, but for the price (less than $ 25 Canadian) you can not really beat the novelty of it.

The World's Most Famous Runners

There have been many famous runners through the years, and they have accomplished many record-setting performances and feats which are hard to break. These world-famous runners have participated in the Olympics, ran many marathons, and are track and field stars in their own right. Some of them have pioneered the sport from over a century ago, and some of them have attained world prominence because of their hard work and athletic prowess in recent years. While listing all of these great athletes would be impossible, here is a great taste of some of the more memorable ones.

When we think of some of the greatest Olympians who have been runners, some of the first names who come to mind are; Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Mary Decker-Slaney, Grete Waitz, Michael Johnson, Deena Kastor, and Paula Radcliffe. These world-famous runners have been able to accomplish Olympic gold and marathon excellence Most set new track and field marks which have often been hard to reach.

Jesse Owens was able to win four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He welcomed Olympic running to prominence because of his unpreceded feat. These four Olympic gold medals were not matched for nearly 50 years until Carl Lewis came along in 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympics. These two heroic runners were able to claim their multiple prizes by running in the 100 m, 200 m, 4 x 100 m, and long jump events.

Arthur Lydiard, who passed away in 2004, is considered one of the top five running figures in this past century. Not only had he won several different marathons over his great career, but he also is credited with inventing the exercise program that we all know as jogging.

Deena Kastor is currently considered one of the best female American marathoners. In the same token, Paula Radcliffe is also one of the best long distance runners in the world. Craig Mottram is from Australia and is also a continual threat in the marathon. Some of these world-famous runners are current threats in the world of running.

Many other world-famous runners of the past and present are names that you just might recognize. The list includes, but is not limited to: Sir Roger Bannister, Uta Pippig, Jeff Galloway, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Naoko Takahashi, Evans Rutto, Catherine Switzer, Rosa Mota, Arturo Barrios, David Bedford, and Paul Bitok. All of these runners have gained acclaim in the world of running through their hard work and sacrifice.
