X-ray Machine

It was German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen who accidentally discovered x-rays in 1895 while working on experiments with electron beams. X-ray machines help doctors diagnose illnesses, detect fractured bones, cavities and foreign objects inside the body.

EKG Machine

The first EKG (electrocardiogram) machine was built in 1903 by Willem Einthoven. An EKG machine detects any abnormalities in heart functions by detecting the electrical signals created by the movement of the heart’s muscles. Einthoven assigned the letters P, Q, R, S and T to the various kinds of electrical signals of the heart. His system is still used in modern EKG machines.

Ultrasound Machines

In a similar fashion as sonar, ultrasound machines map the body’s interior tissue and organs by emitting high-pitched sound waves that bounce off internal body structures to produce a visual image of them. Karl Dussik and Ian Donald are the two most well known pioneers of ultrasound technology. In 192, Dussik used ultrasound to examine the human brain and Donald, in the 50s, used ultrasound for diagnostic purposes.

How to Polish Resin Jewellery & Resin Buffing

Resin jewellery has become very popular as creators can create truly original pieces. The processes for making resin jewellery are quite easy using moulds and simple to use resins. This article will look at finishing resin jewellery with polishing and resin buffing methods to create professional quality jewellery pieces.

Once you have de-moulded your jewellery piece and it has cured fully you can refine the jewellery pieces appearance by drilling, sanding, polishing or buffing. Be sure to wear a mask when applying any of these techniques as they will create fine resin dust that you wouldn’t want to inhale.

Hand Sanding and Polishing or Buffing

To start with you may need to use a coarse grade of sandpaper to take off the obvious bumps and imperfections. A grade of 100 to 180 grit is the most suitable for this task. A wooden block for sanding can help to sand only the high points and get a smooth finish.

Next we can move to wet and dry sandpaper for finer sanding with grits starting at 320 and moving through to 400. You can sand the item under running water if you wish to reduce the dust. You can move to even finer grits of 600 through to 1500 to achieve glass like surfaces.

A final polish is needed to bring the surface up to a high gloss. We usually use a polishing compound for buffing resins and a cloth.

Note: This method only applies to polyurethane and polyester resins. With epoxy resins resin buffing is not recommended. Instead we suggest you re-coat the sanded surface with resin to create a high shine. Special coating resins are designed for this task.

Machine Buffing

Resin buffing can be sped up by using machine buffers. Care must be taken however with the speed of the buffer. If speeds are too high then the resin may soften and leave white marks in the surface.

Drilling

For the same reasons with machine buffing, drilling must also be done at a slow speed. Drill bits can also become clogged if the resin gets to hot and softens.

Be sure to secure the small jewellery piece so that a straight hole can be drilled. We have tried several materials to put between a vice and the jewellery piece so that it doesn’t mark the delicate resin surface and have found that leather is ideal.

If at any time you make a mistake with your drilling you can repair it with additional resin mix.

Attaching Jewellery Findings

When attaching findings to the jewellery pieces epoxy glue is the most suitable. The 5 – 10 minute setting type is ideal. You can also use your original resin mix to attach findings. Leave overnight to set.

To Achieve a Matte Finish

An interesting and different way of finishing resin jewellery is to give the pieces a matte finish. This can be done by sandblasting the cured piece. If you don’t have access to a sandblaster, small units are available at an economical price and are powered by a compressed can of air. Alternatively you can use a pumice rubbing compound to give your pieces a matte finish.

Violin rosin has been used to draw sound from the violin since the first instruments were carved from wood hundreds of years ago. Historically, rosin has been made from pine resin, a natural substance found in trees. Many different companies manufacture rosin, and each variety tends to have different characteristics that affect the sound — shading the tone toward bright or dark, and adding varying degrees of “grittiness” to the feel and sound. Further, choosing the “right” rosin is largely a matter of personal preference. Although it functions well most of the time, pine resin does have some limitations — it can crystallize in the cold, damage the varnish on the violin if left to sit, and often cracks or even shatters rather easily. Also, pine resin is an allergen for some, and can cause sneezing and watery eyes during playing in susceptible people.

Supersensitive Clarity Rosin for Violin and Viola is the first synthetic rosin I have seen that is a viable replacement for pine resin. Formulated to by hypo-allergenic, it does not damage varnish. Further, it is not affected by humidity nor does it absorb moisture, which helps it keep its tackiness without cracking in all seasons. But, most importantly, this rosin actually works nicely — and, when played, seems indistinguishable from ordinary rosin (although its characteristics must be evaluated by the individual player). Using my setup, this rosin produced a smooth tone without much grit and nice clarity. However, every player has different preferences in feel and sound of rosin so no single brand is likely to suit every taste.

As a teacher, I have noticed that many of my younger students enjoy handling and applying rosin to the bow, and so the fact that clarity rosin comes in colors (pink, red, blue, green, and purple) gives it a modern look that is especially appealing to youngsters. Also, young students are more likely to over-apply rosin and also not to wipe the instrument clean as frequently as necessary to prevent ordinary rosin from damaging the finish. Thus, this colorful rosin can also help extend the life of the instrument.

Though I have not found a synthetic substitute for horse hair (or for my wood violins for that matter) that functions as well as the original, this rosin does appear to be a viable substitute for pine resin, and one that adds a little fun and color into the mix as well.

In a well designed Data Center cable layout, there are often 4 separate layers of cables including copper cables, fiber cables, power cables, and ground lines. Certain cable layouts have crosstalk considerations that can indicate the use of (ScTP) overall shielded pairs, or (STP) shielded pairs and overall shielding rather than (UTP) unshielded twisted pair cable.

A mortgage promissory note is a promise to pay. If you don’t pay, then your home or commercial property could go into foreclosure where the Lender, bank servicer, trustee, or investor can use questionable tactics to get your property. There is a mortgage that goes along with the note, a contract in real estate. The Bank Lender created both the note and mortgage for their benefit. You can use their own promissory note and mortgage contract against them to regain your home or property. Let’s talk about the note first.

The note on the last page should have an allonge or allonges to prove a true sale(s) to a Trust, another bank, or investor each and every time the note with the mortgage is sold, assigned, or transferred. An allonge is an illegal alteration of an incomplete note. An allonge in blank, without the assignee signing it is illegal as per the Uniform Commercial Code, UCC, Federal code of laws that is controlling the world and the lender’s Pooling and Servicing Agreement that controls the Trust that your note and mortgage are supposed to be in.

When the lender assigns, transfers, or sells the note and mortgage, they become securitized and are sold multiple times to investors or into a trust for multiple streams of income for the lender. Within 30 days of each assignment, transfer, or sell, the assignment of true sale must be recorded under States’ statute. The dates of the allonge endorsement(s) and the notarized assignment(s) must match to prove true sales before a foreclosure can legally occur.

In addition to other disclosures required by TILA, 15 U.S.C. ยง1641(f)(2), Liability of assignees, not later than 30 days after the date on which a mortgage loan, including mortgage and note, is sold or otherwise transferred or assigned to a third party, the creditor that is the new owner or assignee of the debt shall notify the borrower in writing of such transfer, including-

(A) the identity, address, telephone number of the new creditor;

(B) the date of transfer;

(C) how to reach an agent or party having authority to act on behalf of the

new creditor;

(D) the location of the place where transfer of ownership of the debt is

recorded; and

(E) any other relevant information regarding the new creditor.

This requirement of law is quite useful in a case when you have authoritative documentation that there are other holders of the note that are not the same as the party who claims the right in a mortgage foreclosure action.

It can be the catalyst to force the court to make the foreclosure attorney to produce the note titled to them and other evidences of ownership of the loan since it is a violation of Federal and State law not to. True fraud evidence becomes a very useful plank in your quiet title law suit to oppose and stop foreclosure.

In most foreclosure cases, the judge does not know the law governing the real estate mortgage and note under the Uniformed Commercial Code of Federal Laws, UCC, Articles 3, 8, and 9. It is a made up terminology by the banking industry to take your money and property. The mortgage is the contract with many legal flaws. Nowhere does it say that the note and mortgage must be paid by the borrower.

Leadership is a concept that is mis understood by many people.Until recently that included me as well.

Leadership is not about telling people what to do. Nor is leadership something that has to be practiced only by senior executives in large corporations. Leadership is not a genetic trait though some are born great leaders. Leadership is very much a learnable skill. Research conducted into the lives of some of the greatest leaders reveals undeniable evidence that they had picked up effective leadership skills on the way.

To really understand leadership you have to do the following:

– Understand the evolution of leadership down the ages

– Consider some of the important leadership models

– look both inside yourself and outside.

While there are various definitions of leadership, some so academic you would become more confused than enlightened, the one I like best is:

“Leadership is about CHANGING the status quo”. – Wyatt Woodsmart

Note that leadership is not about keeping things the same.

Another definition that I like is by Eben Pagan:

“Leadership is the ability to effect human behavior so as to accomplish a mission”.

A Brief History of Leadership

When society first developed, a hierarchical model of leadership evolved. Some leaders were great and their people flourished. Some were not and their people suffered.

As society evolved further we got religious leaders.

And later, politicians emerged as elected leaders.

And finally business leaders.

Managers came into existence much more recently in the late nineteenth century. The common belief is that managers were invented when two trains one each from Buffalo and New York city collided. A post mortem revealed the need to have someone oversee the movements of trains.

In the traditional model a charismatic / autocratic leader of pre eminent status creates a vision for the future. He then issues clear directions to his followers.

Leadership is a collaborative process. Anyone can engage in leadership when there is a need for change.

We cannot do it all ourselves, we need others. Hence the need for collaboration.

The Inner Game of Leadership

The concept of the inner game first came into popular vogue with the publication of the phenomenal book “The Inner Game of Tennis” by Timothy Gallwey in 1972. Gallwey wrote “Every game is composed of two parts, an outer game and an inner game.” The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety.

This concept can be extended to leadership as well. What goes on inside you is more important than what goes on outside. Your state of mind, your visualizations, your beliefs, self motivation, internal behavior, how you perceive problems etc.

The inner game of leadership is particularly challenging to understand. In the business world an undue emphasis is placed on results. Results that are tangible, quantifiable and measurable. In other words the emphasis is completely on the outer game, what happens on the outside.

Most successful leaders operate out of unconscious competence. They do not know what they are doing right mentally.

Compassionate Detachment – Loving Enough to Let Go

When I was young I discovered a chrysalis hanging from a branch in some scrub oak near our house. Each day after this discovery I would go out and check on this chrysalis in the hopes of seeing the butterfly that I knew was inside. You can imagine how excited I was when one day I came out to find the head of this butterfly sticking out from a hole in the bottom of the cocoon!

Very carefully I began to pull the silk from around the butterfly until I had a hole big enough to tear the cocoon open. With a “plop” the butterfly hit the ground. It wasn’t the magnificent flying creature I had envisioned. Its wings were rolled up tight and it eventually died. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Instead of being a witness to the wonder of the butterfly’s flight, I was the cause of its death.

Had I known then what I know now about compassionate detachment, that butterfly would have lived to fulfill its life’s mission. I learned much later in life that the struggle I had witnessed was actually necessary for the butterfly to live. The effort to get out of the cocoon causes fluid to be pumped into the wings and without that fluid the butterfly can’t unroll. By stepping in and interfering with this process I didn’t allow the butterfly to develop according to its nature. I prevented the struggle that was necessary to make it strong.

Compassionate detachment simply means we are not attached physically, spiritually, mentally and especially emotionally to the events, things, and people in our lives that we have compassion for. This does not mean we don’t care – because compassion is caring. It means we are not attached in a way that fails to serve the highest good of all.

What exactly is the highest good? The truth is that most of the time we just don’t know. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop us from trying to insert our wisdom and sometimes even insisting that people take our advice. However well intentioned I was when I was younger, I didn’t know what was for the highest good of the butterfly and my interference and insistence cost that creature its life.

If it was difficult to watch the struggle of a butterfly, how difficult must it be to watch the struggle of a loved one?

What if it is your child? Suppose a child was born into a loving, yet very over-protective family. The parents, in their idea of love declared, “Our child will be protected from all of the evils of life. Kids will never make fun of him or tease him because we will never allow him out of the house. He will stay here where he is loved and protected. He will never have to be subjected to germs and pollutants nor will anything harmful every come into contact with him.”

The mother would cook every meal for him throughout the rest of his life. He will never have to cook and risk being burned by a hot stove. The father said, “He will never have to work because he could be injured on the job and we would never want to see our child hurt.” They agreed that since he would never have to work he would never have to go to school. “Why should we subject him to cruel and unkind people? Why should he have to exert all that effort to learn anyway? Plus the history books are full of stories of war, famine, slavery and other atrocities. It is better that he not have to hear such negative things.”

They also agreed that he should never date or marry because how easy would it be for a girl to break his heart? “It is better to just keep him here with us where he is loved and protected,” they said. They told him, “Don’t run, don’t jump, don’t climb on things and stay out of all the rooms where there are dangerous things because we love you and don’t want to see you get hurt. It’s for your own good.” …Okay, by now you are probably saying, “I get the point!” I give you this extreme and hypothetical situation to overstate that not all struggle or pain is bad.

There is a fine line between aiding someone – and carrying them in a way that robs them of the life lessons needed to make them strong and help them become capable of carrying out their life’s mission. Each person comes into this world with his own load, for which he and he alone is responsible. Anyone who attempts to carry another’s load (or shirk his own) is not serving anyone’s highest good. In fact, that is a disservice and could stunt or prevent the growth necessary to carry them through their lie’s mission. Sometimes you have to love a person enough to let go. Let them learn their lessons.

When you let go of someone by being compassionately detached, you don’t let go so they fall. You let go so they can fly!

The Hazards of Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide is one of the most dangerous chemicals. It is one of the strongest alkaline, known as caustic soda or lye. It is white, odorless and non-volatile in aqueous solutions. It is not readily flammable. However, it is a highly reactive substance. It forms an exothermic solution with water, evolving heat which may ignite combustible materials nearby. Its reaction with other metals yields hydrogen gas which ignites in the presence of oxygen. Moreover, this substance is extremely corrosive.

This compound is found in many manufacturing plants. It is used in the following industrial purposes: manufacture of soaps, detergents and cleaning agents; processing of cotton and production of rayon and cellophane; processing of petroleum and natural gas; manufacture of pulp and paper; and various other chemical processing like pH control and acid neutralization. This chemical is also found in textile processing, vegetable oil refining, water treatment, manufacture of glass, preparation of adhesives, and stabilization of sodium hypochlorite. It is used in the processing of aluminum and degreasing of metals.

This compound is either used in industries as a pure solid substance or in solutions with water at varying concentrations. It may be found with impurities like sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and metals like iron and nickel.

This chemical is known in chemistry to be one of the most dangerous substances that must be handled with extreme caution.

This alkaline substance does not form vapors but may form aerosol dust which can be inhaled. Reports from cases of inhalation of caustic soda suggest that this compound has the ability to irritate the respiratory tract lining. A lung injury known as pulmonary edema or the accumulation of fluid in the lungs may happen. Workers exposed to a hot mist of this compound in unventilated area will experience tightness of chest, difficulty in breathing, and cough. This is due to the body’s defense mechanism against the irritant. There was a reported case of a man who sustained severe pulmonary injury due to inhalation of aerosol containing the substance. This happened when water was poured onto sodium hydroxide pellets.

This compound is very corrosive that it should not come in contact with any part of the body. During skin exposure, the substance causes severe burning, ulceration and scarring. One of the dangers of skin exposure is that the chemical tends to destroy deeper layers of the skin until it is washed off. The extent of injury depends on the length and amount of exposure.

Another thing which must be guarded is the possibility of eye contact because the chemical can penetrate deep into the eyes. One of the most obvious symptoms of eye injury due to exposure is damage on the cornea accompanied by clouding and loss of normal vision. This could progress to eye disorders like glaucoma and cataract. The ulceration and clouding in the eye may continue resulting to permanent blindness.

Accidental ingestion of the alkaline may result to even more serious conditions. The substance is likely to corrode anything in its path. Thus, severe burns in the mouth, throat, esophageal lining, and gastric lining may happen. This could be accompanied by vomiting and loose bowel movement. In severe cases hemorrhage and perforation may occur, which leads to death.

These, however, are results of initial and acute exposures. Chronic exposure is one thing that concerns most workers in industrial plants where sodium hydroxide is introduced and utilized. Continual skin contact causes the skin to become dry, cracked, and inflamed. Chronic respiratory exposure may cause serious obstruction in the airway.

A research was conducted to determine whether the inorganic base is responsible for cancer. Individuals who were frequently exposed to it were called in for the study. There is a speculation that the alkaline causes cancer of the esophagus to individuals who have accidentally swallowed it. However, the cancer does not develop until more than ten years from exposure. The same cancer tissue growth has been noticed in areas of the skin that suffered previous burns. But experts believe that the cancerous growths have been due to the damage to the tissue and formation of scar and not directly caused by chemical exposure.
