Here are some other tips on keeping your car cool during Summer:

(1) Park in a shady spot and place sunshade

A necessary precaution is the choice of parking spot. Whenever possible, choose a shadier spot to park even if it means walking a few blocks. Your body and your car will thank you when you return to a cooler car. If you can not find a shady spot then place sunshades in front and rear windows and if the heat is intense then place window visors on the side as well. Crack open the windows slightly to allow cross ventilation.

(2) Install a tint

If you live in a warm country then getting your windows tinted is a great idea. It protects you not only from heat but also from prying eyes. Find out tinting regulations in your country as most countries restrict tinting to a certain percentage. In most countries including the United States the maximum allowed tinting is 30%.

(3) Check and change the coolant

Coolant system is generally the first casualty of the summer so we can not risk its break due to overheating. Manufacturers recommend that drivers should flush the coolant from the reservoir every two years. Mechanics recommend that antifreeze should be mixed with water half and half. Make sure you check and refurbish the coolant system at the sunset of the summer.

(4) Change the oil regularly

Mechanics recommend that oil should be changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. If you are living in a country with dirty fuel, oil and filters should be changed more often. Make it a a habit of checking the oil volume every few weeks. Make sure that the engine has a chance to cool off before you check the oil.

Botts' dots are round non reflective raised pavement marks. These marks are commonly used for road safety and control. In different areas, Botts' dotts are used to mark the lanes in major roads such as highways and arterial roads. They are either white or yellow in color. They serve as substitutes as lines. These are typically made from a combination of different materials, particularly that of ceramic and plastics such as polyester.

These raised pavement marks are credited to Dr. Elbert Dysart Botts who worked at the California Department of Transportation and oversaw research which eventually led to the development of marks for road safety. But despite the Botts' dotts credited to being the result of a research done by the California Department of Transportation, they are used all over the globe such as in Australia, New Zealand and countries in the Middle East like Sudan and Kuwait. In major roads and accident pre areas, streets and lanes are often marked with a combination of Botts' dotts, the non reflective raised marks and the conventional reflective marks. When the combination of the marks is used, it eliminates the need for repainting of lane divider lines. The common areas wherein the combinations of reflective and non reflective raised pavement marks are used include hilly areas where there is frequent fog and rain and areas with a significant amount of snowfall.

Botts' dotts are also common fixtures in areas with high traffic and high accident rates, even if there are no reported snowfalls or for. These cut up sides will allow for the cupola to fit snugly to your roof pitch.On the other hand, if you're thinking about making the cupola as functional as possible, you can start by creating an area where you intend to place the cupola. Make sure to have minimum 6-inch insurance on the inside of the perimeter of the cupola. Do not cut the roof ridge and rafts; just the sheathing and shingles.

Positioning of the Cupola Base. Do not assemble the cupola yet. Remove the top section (cupola roof) and the mid section of the cupola first. Just work with the base for now.

Create four pieces of 2×4's as fasteners for the cupola base on all sides from the inside. Screw the 2×4's in place. Make sure that when you position the base on the spot where the 2×4's are, the cupola base must fit as snugly as possible to the pieces.

Mounting and Installing the Cupola. Put the base in position with the 2×4's in the inside. Once you've secured the base to the shed roof, use silicone caulk to keep the cupola base fixed firmly in place and to prevent water from leaking in to it. If you've created a hole into the roof, use flashing to prevent leaks to the inside of the cupola. Once the base is secured, you can start assembling the cupola by screwing its midsection and top section to the pre-drilled holes. Use the silicone caulk on the exposed screw heads to prevent leaking.

Installing your shed series is fairly easy. All it takes is some common sense and the right tools to get things going and done. Film Review – Hero

For an epic martial arts movie, Yimou Zang's Hero is surprisingly short. But despite clocking in at just 95 minutes, the film achieves a grandness of scale and a poetic visual beauty that many films twice it's length fail to match.

Set two thousand years ago in ancient China during a time of disparate warring kingdoms, the plot follows the nameless hero of the title as he is summoned by the king to relay his account of how defeated the ruler's three most feared would-be assassins. However, as the narrative is retold from different points of view, it becomes apparent that all is not as it looks, and that nothing is clear-cut.

Hero is part of the Chinese wuxia (swordsman) genre of films, and the stylized action sequences and lavish mise-en-scene bear resemblance to the swords and sorcery of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Taiwan / Hong Kong: 2000)

Martial arts legend Jet Li gives a powerful yet understated performance in the lead role , and the film's visually stunning action sequences provide many opportunities for him to show off his abilities. Veteran's of Hong Kong cinema Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, and martial arts star Donnie Yen also put in fine performances as assassins Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky.

But the real stars of the film are those behind the camera. Featuring an impressive line-up of off-screen talent, Hero has won awards from all over the globe for its direction (Yimou Zang), cinematography (Christopher Doyle) and costume design (Emi Wada), and was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

One of the most striking visual elements is the use of color. Each flashback sequence is dominated by an individual color which, like the strokes of an artist brush, sets the mood and tone. For instance, in the first flashback story, the dominant color is a deep and vibrant red, underpinning the emotions of love, passion, jealousy and anger which lie at the core of the sequence. In another scene, a cool blue is used to emphasize the sorrow and loss felt by the combatants. All this is achieved beautifully using both costumes and settings.

Like Crouching Tiger … , Hero's intricately choreographed fight sequences very heavily on neatly orchestrated wirework to produce fantastical stunts which may put off some martial arts action purists, but are a feast to the eye and give the film a slightly 'magical' dimension.

Director Yimou Zang is quoted as saying "two years after you saw a great film, you may have forgotten the story but you always remember a few seconds of a particular scene." Hero is one of those films- whether it be the sight of a thousand arrows bearing down on valiant warriors dressed in brilliant red, the breathtaking duel on the perfectly still surface of a serene lake, or the beautiful rendering of countless remote locations, here is a film that ingrains its images in your memory like a painters brushstrokes on canvas.

Did You Bring a Shovel?

Did you ever get in a situation that seemed impossible? In such a predicament that you have no idea which thing to do first? Kind of like Lucy in the chocolate factory when the assembly line is moving too fast. Me too.

About 20 years ago, I was in an interesting situation. My sister Clare was still in college and she and I had gone home for the weekend to see our Mom. It was Thanksgiving so we had a few extra days to enjoy the home cooking and company. My Mom lived in Ashland, WI at the time. Ashland is on Lake Superior, it’s where I grew up.

We were supposed to go back to Madison (300 miles south) on Sunday. But it started to snow on Saturday night and by the time we woke up on Sunday, we were in the middle of a blizzard. This was not the first time we were snowed-in during Thanksgiving break, it happened pretty regularly when I was growing up.

My sister had a paper due on Monday and was determined to start out for Madison. So we loaded my pickup truck (small size Ranger) and I began to drive. When I turned the corner to get onto the highway, I realized that we were not going to Madison that day.

The snow in the road was higher than my truck. It was about 9-10 feet deep in the middle of the road. I stopped the truck and put it in park.

And this is where it gets interesting.

My sister, the eternal optimist, turned to me and said “Did you bring a shovel?”

I nodded my head while my mouth was hanging open and she got out and grabbed the shovel and started to dig. At this point we had about 299 miles to go and the snow was 10 feet deep. I sat there stunned as she dug and wondered just how long she would dig before she realized that we weren’t going to Madison. I tuned in the radio and all of the highways that lead in or out of Ashland were closed and there she was digging.

That my friends is optimism. Now you and I both know that there is no possible way we could return to Madison that day. All of the highways were closed and even if my sister is in great shape, you can not dig a 300 mile path for a pickup truck I don’t care who you are.

But this got me thinking. What is it like to go through life to the beat of her drum? What is it that she sees when she looks at this problem? Clearly, she did not see an impossible situation. She saw an opportunity to try something. We didn’t get to Madison that day, but I did learn a thing or two about my sister. She makes my optimism look pretty run of the mill compared to hers. My goal is to reach that level of optimism someday.

Can you imagine what she would think of having AA(adhesive arachnoiditis, chronic back pain)? I know that she hasn’t given up hope that something can help us. She is always giving me suggestions and trying to come up with new ideas for helping me. It is great to have someone in your life with such a positive outlook. She’s a pharmacist and although she hasn’t found it yet, she wants to find a more effective pain treatment or anti-inflammatory that doesn’t have all of the drawbacks but does allow us to regain our lives.

The next time I’m faced with an insurmountable problem, I will ask myself “Did you bring a shovel?” and then I’ll continue on trying to do whatever is possible for me. Instead of automatically giving up, I’ll try and shovel my way out of this disease and back into life. Why don’t you join me? If enough of us grab a shovel, we will take back our lives and then just watch us go.

This produced 280 bhp at 5500 rpm, and 305 ft / lbs of torque at only 4000 rpm, whichave it a top speed of 158 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 secs, and a 0-100 mph time of 11.3 secs .

Understandably, customers preferred this variant over the 4 liter standard unit. It was well received by the motoring press.

Later that year, a 4.5 liter variant was introduced, which developed 285 bhp, and 310 ft / lbs of torque. This produced a top speed of 158 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 secs.

Production of Griffiths for the home market was halted in December 1992 so that export orders could be fulfilled, and to concentrate on the TVR Chimaera, a sister model of the Griffith.

By this time, TVR's own engine, the AJP8, was almost ready to be fitted to the Griffith.

However, following delays in producing the AJP8, and demand for the Griffith steadily increasing, in August 1993, a 5 liter version of the Rover V8 unit, that had been developed by TVR, was used instead.

This final variant brave rise to the design Griffith 500 with which the model became universally known.

As far as the press was concerned, the Griffith 500 was a resounding success, with one commentator even suggesting that it was "overpowered".

In this iteration, the engine developed 340 bhp at 5500 rpm, and 350 ft / lbs of torque at 4000 rpm, which produced a top speed of 169 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 secs, and a 0-100 mph time of 10.5 secs.

However, when fitted with a catalytic converter, output was reduced to 320 bhp.

All versions of the new Griffith were fitted with:

  • A five speed gearbox from the Rover SDI saloon
  • All round independent suspension
  • 10 inch vented disc brakes front and rear
  • 15 inch aluminum alloy wheels at the front and 16 inch at the rear
  • Uprated brakes and suspension

Production of left hand drive cars for Europe began in early 1993.

In 1994, the gearbox was changed from the Rover SDI unit to the near bullet proof Borg Warner T5 Tremec.

In 1996, the Griffith Speed ​​Six sports car was premiered, fitted with the TVR designed AJP 3996 cc, straight 6-cylinder engine, developing 380 bhp. However, in the end, this model did not enter production.

With the pending re-introduction of the Tuscan in 1999, sales of the Griffith 500 had already begun to tail off.

Since the TVR Chimaera and Cerbera models were also being produced at this time, the company decided, in 2000, to slowly phase out the Griffith.

This was achieved by the introduction, in 2001, of a 100 unit limited special edition (SE) version of the car.

This variant was very similar to the production version, but with the following modifications:

  • It used the dash from the Chimaera
  • Seats came from the Cerbera
  • Alternative rear lights and door mirrors
  • Clear indicator lenses
  • More powerful headlights

Each individual SE car received a special plaque in the glove compartment, a special edition badge positioned on the boot, and a unique signature in the floor of the boot.

Although the Griffith was a fabulous looking sports car, its weakness was in terms of practically.

This was overcome with the Chimaera which was, in essence, a Griffith with a larger boot and softer suspension, but equally as fast.
