Rivet – Permanent Mechanical Fastener for Commercial and Industrial Applications

Rivets – Most common Types of Fasteners Available:

They are arguably one of the most common types of fasteners available today along with nuts, bolts, and other such similar household and industrial items. Fasteners are what enable machines, equipment, and other products to be put together. As it is essentially just another permanent mechanical fastener, it is also one of the most commonly used. It can be found in handfuls in household equipment and by the hundreds of thousands on plane, such as.

How Rivet is Different from Other Fastener Types?

What differentiates a rivet from other types of fasteners? They consist of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end, with the end opposite the head usually called the buck-tail. The basics of a rivet is that when it is installed in a drilled hole, the tail is bucked or deformed, meaning it expands about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter and securing the that place. This end that has been deformed is referred to as the shop head, while the original head is referred to as the factory head. These are especially effective fasteners when it comes to supporting shear loads, although it can also support tension loads. However, bolts and screws are more applicable to any application with tension loads, as each fastener is designed to be effective in certain applications.

Commonly Available Types:

With this being said, it is understandable that even among the family of rivets, there is quite different types, each designed to meet different cost, accessibility, and strength requirements.

  • Solid/round head rivets

    • One of the oldest and most reliable fasteners
    • Used in applications that stress reliability and safety
    • Consist of a shaft and head that are deformed by a hammer/rivet gun
    • Most commonly used in assembling modern aircraft
  • Semi-tubular rivets

    • Similar to solid rivets except for a partial hole at the tip
    • Purpose of the hole is cut amount of force needed for application
    • Requires less force to apply a semi-tubular rivet than a solid rivet
    • Fastest way to rivet in mass production
  • Blind rivets

    • Tubular rivets that are supplied with a mandrel in the center
    • Specially designed tool must be used to draw the mandel into the rivet
    • Can be installed in a joint from only one side of a part
  • Oscar rivets

    • Similar to blind rivets with the exception of three splits along the hollow shaft
    • Splits cause shaft to flare out, providing wide surface that reduces the chance of rivet pull-out
  • Drive rivets

    • Type of blind rivet that has a short mandrel protruding from the head
  • Flush rivets

    • Utilizes a countersink hole so it can effectively be used on external metal surfaces that must good appearance
  • Friction-lock rivets

    • Resembles an expanding bolt
  • Self-pierce rivets

    • Rivets that do not need a drilled or punched hole
  • Bifurcated (split) rivets

Bifurcated rivets, also known as split rivets, are rivets with a bifurcated shank, which simply means they divide into two parts. Their main difference from other rivets is their divided end, which splits apart once it is inserted into material, thereby creating a secure connection. The two options when purchasing split rivets, countersunk heads or oval heads, creates a smooth surface or leaves a domed surface on the material, respectively.

What The Heck Is A Shadow Box Fence?

Since you’re wondering what a shadow box fence is, I should point out the most obvious first. It has nothing to do with a box. A shadow box fence is actually a semi-private fence that’s made by placing standard privacy fence pickets on both sides of the fence with spaces between each picket. Since there’s a board in between the pickets on the outside of the fence and the pickets on the inside of the fence, this causes a shadow effect.

Shadow box fences are typically 6 or 8 feet tall but aren’t completely private. When you look straight at them, you can’t see what’s on the other side. But, when you look at one from an angle, you can see through it. The view is obstructed, but you can see through them well enough to tell what’s happening on the other side. This is because they are built with the pickets spaced around 2 inches apart on each side of the fence. The spaces are lined up with the picket on the opposite side so you can’t see through the fence looking at it straight on.

These fences are not completely private, but there are some advantages they have over basic privacy fences that have pickets which are butted together. The most obvious advantage is that they are more stylish than a basic privacy fence and will set your fence apart from your neighbors. Basic privacy fences have one pretty side and a shadow box looks good from inside or outside of the fence. They also hold up to wind better than an average privacy fence. Since they are not completely solid, wind can pass through them without putting as much stress on your fence. Standard privacy fences are the first to go in a major storm.

There’s some disadvantages to them as well. As mentioned above, they’re not completely private but most wood privacy fences aren’t. Most people don’t realize that treated wood usually shrinks when it has time to dry out. This means that even though your fence may not have any gaps between the pickets when it’s first built, it probably will after a little time passes. You will still be able to see a lot more of the action on the other side of shadow box fencing than you will with a basic privacy fence. For this reason, you don’t usually see a lot of them in neighborhoods where houses are close together. The other disadvantage is price. The shadow box requires a considerable amount of additional material and also requires more labor to build. This will end up costing you more to have one installed.

In the end, you have to weigh the pros and cons when determining whether this type of fence is right for you. Is it more important to have privacy or is curb appeal more important? Also, is a higher cost up front more important than the risk of your fence being blown down more easily in high winds? Now that you know what a shadow box fence is, you should take them in to consideration if you’re planning on getting a fence of your own built.

Estimating the Cost of Wood Privacy Fence Installation

Fence costs are calculated as a cost per linear foot. The easiest way to estimate the cost is to determine the cost of a single fence panel and then multiply that cost times the number of panels required to achieve the total length of the fence.

First, measure the perimeter of the area to be enclosed – while doing this make note of any special situations that will influence to cost such as gate(s) or difficult terrain. If a fence already exists that will be replaced with new materials then simply count the number of fence panels that are present. Wood privacy fences are almost always spaced with posts 8 foot apart on center (this means the measurement from the center of one post to the center of an adjacent post is 8 feet) but always measure to confirm.

Lumber is available in standard 8 foot lengths and offers a balanced solution of cost and strength.

Spans longer than 8 feet will likely have problems with sagging unless the 2×4 cross beams are upgraded to 2×6 dimension – this also changes the appearance of the fence panel.

Spans shorter than 8 feet are usually not necessary, the fence will be stronger but materials cost increase substantially.

If there is a need to set the posts at some other length, be sure to choose an increment of 2 feet (i.e. 6 foot, 8 foot, 10 foot, 12 foot etc… ) otherwise installation will require every cross beam to be cut to length.

What about the premade panels available at the local home improvement store? These premade panels are often made from pressure treated pine with three cross beams that are 1.5×2.25 inches and frequently sag after installation. The cheap fence panels can be suitable for urgent repair purposes but are not recommended for use when installing a new or replacement fence.

Wood fence posts must be pressure treated and rated for ground contact. Galvanized steel fence posts offer longer life after a higher initial cost for the post and the post rail brackets that are required. Many homeowners dislike the appearance of the steel posts but this can be overcome by a simple coat of paint or wrapping the steel post in a wood enclosure.

The fence rails should be 2×4 lumber from pressure treated pine or cedar wood. The style of privacy fence and the choice of wood used on the pickets will have the biggest impact to the aesthetics of the wood privacy fence installation. The basic privacy fence consists of 3.5 inch wide dog-eared pickets placed on one side of the rails; this style requires 24-25 pickets between each post. Another option is to use the wider 5.5 inch pickets which requires 16-17 pickets between posts that 8 feet apart. After the measurements are made, it is time to choose the materials for your fence.

With this information, the total materials cost for wood privacy fence installation can be put into the fence cost calculator. Using the typical selections that make up more than half of all privacy fences in the US:

· 8 foot UC4A pressure treated pine 4×4 wood post (quantity: 1, approx. $8 ea.)

· 8 foot UC3B pressure treated pine 2×4 wood fence rails (quantity: 2, approx. $4 ea.)

· 6 foot 3.5 inch wide western red cedar pickets (quantity: 24, approx. $2 ea.)

· 3 ½ inch 16d galvanized ring shank nails (quantity: 8, approx. $1)

· 1 ¾ inch galvanized ring shank nails (quantity: 100, approx. $1)

· 1.5 cubic feet of crushed gravel (quantity: 1, approx. $5)

This brings the cost of the typical wood privacy fence installation to approximately $71 per panel, or just below $9 per linear foot. Other common fence designs will increase the cost from this baseline estimate of the privacy fence cost. The good-neighbor fence (where the pickets alternate sides of the fence, either picket by picket or panel by panel), shadowbox fence, and board-on-board fence styles both increase the number of pickets. Cap and trip fence style has the clean look of a uniform top edge between each post with the added cost of the top rail. Lattice top privacy fences of course add the cost of the lattice.

This estimate is for materials cost only, if you use a contractor to do the work the total cost of the privacy fence installation project will increase by at least double. Constructing a wood privacy fence is within the capability of the typical homeowner, a solid three day weekend of work with two guys can finish a privacy fence around the typical backyard and use the money saved on refreshments to enjoy a job well done.

Remodels For an Aging Population

It’s a family dynamic affecting the White House and homeowners across the country: seniors moving in with their adult children, and with it families taking on home remodels.

President Barack Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, 71, moved into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to help with Obama’s young girls, and they’re not alone. More than 3.6 million adults lived with adult children in 2007-up 67 percent from 2000, according to U.S. Census figures. The American Association of Retired People says that the population 65 and older will grow by 89 percent from 2007 to 2030-more than four times as fast as the population as a whole.

The burgeoning senior population will need living accommodations, and many seniors will choose to move in with their children instead of senior living centers. A home remodel can accommodate the changing needs of these families, according to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

“I think this will be increasing all the time,” said Barry Goggin, NARI member and owner of Barry Goggin Construction Corp. in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. “It’s very expensive to retire on Long Island, and if people need care, it’s easier for them to move in with family than it is to a nursing home or care facility.”

Goggin recently won a northeast regional CotY Award for a remodel and 480-square foot addition to a colonial-style home on Long Island. The dwelling was home to a retired couple who wanted their parents to move in for two years before their senior living center was completed. “The challenge was to come up with a plan that would be a temporary living space for the elderly couple and would be a future living space for the retired homeowners,” Goggin explained.

The new addition made room for a bedroom, living area and small kitchen, along with a full bath and closet. Architectural plans called for a cathedral ceiling, plenty of windows and French doors leading to a backyard deck. Goggin and his crew took care to accommodate the special needs of the aging parents. Universal design elements, such as low thresholds, handicapped-accessible sinks and grab bars in the shower, made everyday tasks easier for the senior parents. For convenience, Goggin also added a small washer and dryer into a closet, which could be removed later, and the kitchen could be converted into a wet bar. The flexible plan will allow the retired couple to transform the bedroom into a room for entertaining when their senior parents move to assisted living.

“This was the first ‘convertible’ addition we had ever built on a house, but with the aging population, I don’t think it will be the last,” Goggin added.

Budget Accommodations – Lodging

In days gone by, finding a place to stay in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina or other destinations boiled down to finding a copy of Let’s Go or Lonely Planet, locating a hotel within your budget, and then letting your fingers do the walking by dialing up the hotel yourself and making a reservation. Nowadays, with the information superhighway, the Internet, you can find all of the best options out there – and there are also numerous magazines, guidebooks and even downloads to your smart phone or PDA that make finding the ideal lodging for your vacation a simple feat. With the volume of lodging information out there, however, cutting through the clutter is sometimes challenging.

Your goal is to find affordable yet top of the line accommodations for your stint in Myrtle Beach. You need to determine what type of accommodation you desire before beginning your search. Lodging options run the gamut from economy national chains to luxurious resorts. Each has something different to offer the traveler.

Chain hotels in Myrtle Beach, like the Sheraton and the Hampton Inn and Suites are perfect for the family on a budget, and usually feature of all of the amenities that you are accustomed to in a hotel, such as a pool, cable television and a continental breakfast. Some of the chain hotels offer suites that feature a small sitting room (oftentimes with a sofa bed) and two guest beds. Hotels that are owned by private companies or individuals are usually a bit more expensive, but they may offer more of what you are looking for when it comes to your dream vacation, like a hot tub in the room. Resorts in Myrtle Beach are very popular – and there are several that are situated on huge plantation that offer so many activities that you may not see Myrtle Beach itself that much – but you’ll never miss it. Resort spas cater to those who are looking to be pampered with spa treatments while enjoying beautiful scenery, and are very popular among couples that are heading out for a couple’s retreat. You’ll find spas are a bit more expensive, but well-worth-it when it comes to being on the receiving end of wellness treatments like massages, wraps and more.

Once you have determined what type of accommodations you and your family will require for your Myrtle Beach vacation, you can start digging in to look for savings. If you book your lodging at the right time of year, you don’t have to worry about savings – the savings are built in for you. For example, if you plan your vacation during the off-season, you’ll still enjoy beautiful weather and non-stop activities, but will pay as much as fifty percent less for rooms and suites. The time of the week that you stay will also have an effect on the price of your Myrtle Beach hotel or other lodging. In general, you can expect to pay more for rooms on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights because there are more people looking for rooms on these days. In addition, you can find great package deals for vacations that include lodging, airfare, and car rental that can help you realize big savings.

Whatever your Myrtle Beach vacation plans, you’ll find great rooms, a beautiful beach, and lots of friendly “smiling” faces in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – a top destination for travelers along the East Coast.

Executive Condominiums, The New Way Of Housing

The executive condominiums are a type of housing that is becoming very popular in some parts of the world. The first one was constructed in the year 1994. This housing is somewhere in between private housing and public housing and they really look like private condos. They are usually enclosed and come with security and a gated compound. One other thing that can be noted about the executive condominiums is the fact that they come with all sorts of amenities that the residents can use. These include things such as playgrounds, clubhouses, and swimming pools. The executive condominiums are also usually sold and built by various private developers who are well known in the construction circles.

The construction is encouraged by the government and their construction is actually done at a much lower price. This is because the land prices come with subsidies from government. The CPF, Central Provident Fund grants can be taken by the buyers so as to assist them in paying for the executive condominiums as sold by the developers.

The executive condominiums are subject to regulations such as those that are applied to the different HBD flats. There are several limits and restrictions that have been put forward with respect to the ownership. The minimum period of occupancy for such condominiums is at least five years. During this first period, the executive condominium can be up for sale and it cannot be rented out wholly. After the first period, the citizens and the permanent residents can buy the property. After ten years have elapsed, foreigners can gain access to it.

There are executive condominiums located in different parts and the developers are usually well known in their circles. Usually, they include different blocks and come bearing hundreds of housing, residential units and most of the time they are luxurious. The establishments usually cover some sizable lands, creating space for all sorts of family related activities.

Usually, they are created in such a way that they have facilities that make life even easier. They include things such as:

· Lush landscaping

· Sky BBQ

· Tennis court

· Clubhouse

· A lap pool

The location of such projects is also thought out carefully. They are established near public transportation as well as expressways which allow commuters to connect to all other parts of the areas with great ease.

You also find that there are different amenities near such establishments. They include eating houses, minimart and shops for those with banking needs, retail and full dining needs. Apart from the amenities, education center, childcare, food court and supermarket are usually created so as to supply the resident with all the things that they may be in need of.

The units are designed in all shapes and sizes and the most essential aspect is the space that the residents are able to enjoy. Different family sizes can find a suitable unit with great ease. Grants are also given to assist citizens’ access to the property. If anyone is in doubt, financial calculations can be done so as to help you know whether you are actually eligible to purchase an executive condominium unit.

How to Pass the ICC Concrete Plan Examination

An ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector is one who observes and reports the construction of residential or commercial buildings are in accordance with the building codes of the jurisdiction and at the same time, the approved specifications and building plans (aka. blueprints). Not just anyone can be part of this building inspection team. The individual must satisfy the requirements for certification mandated by the International Code Council (ICC). The building team found on any commercial or residential project is composed of different individuals (Architect, Engineer, Superintendent, Inspector, etc.) that perform different tasks but with one single objective, which is to uphold the Code of Ethics for the welfare and safety of the entire public. To attain an ICC Reinforced Concrete Certification does not require years of experience, as many believe.

Tips for passing the plan portion of the examination

The plan portion of the exam is not easy. Even if you have a strong knowledge of the code portion, most individuals fail do to a lack of understanding the rules of reading plans. So to increase your chances of passing the plan examination remember the following:

  • First, there are the ‘Tools of the Trade’ and in plan reading this holds true. Become familiar with the Registered Design Professional product contents, design requirements, orientation, schedules and specific directions that are found in any set of plans.
  • Second, remember one of the duties of a ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector is to verify whether the contractor complies with the approved specifications for the building, needless to say, a candidate must familiarize himself with these items that are found in the plans, especially those that will be used on the structural reinforced concrete.
  • In connection to that, the examination is also an open book 60 question examination so candidates must have good navigational skills with the material such as the Concrete Manual and the Model Program for Special Inspection. To familiarize yourself with these reference requirements you can the ICC candidate bulletin.
  • Thirdly, be completely comfortable with the symbols and abbreviations used on the building plans because this is a very often missed step by individuals that test. And equip yourself with necessary instruments that will help you answer the questions more efficiently such as a sheet magnifying glass and a calculator.

In closing, learning how to budget your time for the given 3 ½ hours is not an easy task. There are 90 questions and the rule of thumb is to allocate 1 ½ hours for the open book code portion and 2 hours for interpreting the plans.

Best of luck on the test!

Dowel Rods for Kitchen Use

Without a doubt, when one thinks of dowel rods, woodworking and crafts immediately come to mind. This is because dowel rods are commonly and routinely used in woodworking. However, the uses of dowel rods are much more versatile than some may realize. In fact, they can be quite handy in the kitchen in traditional and non-traditional ways. Let’s examine some possibilities for uses of dowel rods in the kitchen.

Some of the traditional, woodworking-related ways dowel rods can be ideal for kitchen uses include the ability to make certain items from scratch. For instance, kitchen utensils are simple projects that can be completed easily and with a minimal investment of both time and expense. Consider trying a hand at creating wooden spoons, ladles, or honey drippers. Dowels can be used as handles for each of these projects. Once completed, mount dowels to a strip of wood, paint or stain, and hang your new, ready-to-use utensils near your stove top for convenience and easy access.

Easily make a dish drying rack and add a natural, wooden element to your kitchen in the process. Another simple project to consider is a paper towel dispenser. With some creativity and imagination, these can be made either as standing, vertical units, which can be placed on kitchen counters, or as elongated, horizontal units, which can be mounted under cabinets. Because of their relative simplicity, each of these would also be an excellent, but simple project for the beginning woodworker.

For a more experienced woodworker, dowels can be used in the repair or upgrade of kitchen seating, as, quite commonly, the rungs of chairs are formed from dowel. Consider adding dowels with grooves or hooks to kitchen cabinets to hang coffee mugs or teacups and free up some storage space. Or, use dowels to create a plate rack inside your kitchen cabinets for the same reason. A piece of wood with simple dowel or more ornate shaker pegs would make a great hanging rack for aprons, oven mitts, and pot holders.

There are some less traditional, but equally resourceful uses for dowel in the kitchen as well.

When it comes to baking, dowels can be used to support tiered cakes. Because they vary in size, they may also be purchased and used as an accurate guide for measuring thickness when rolling out dough. For those who enjoy making pasta from scratch, another creative use is for pasta drying. Create a rack for your homemade pastas.

Use a wood dowel to circularly wrap cloth napkins and avoid wrinkling and ironing altogether! If kitchen drawer space is limited, consider making a hanging or countertop linen rack. This is a functional tool, but can also compliment or accent your kitchen décor. If kitchen drawer space is available, consider using dowels to create compartments for typical supplies, such as pens or pencils, sticky notes, tape, scissors, magnets, or coupons.

Depending on the bulk (weight) of the material, a sturdy hardwood dowel may be used in kitchen window treatments. Less hardy dowels may be considered for lighter valances.

There is so much more that can be done with dowels than many may ever imagine. Use some of these ideas to make simple and cost-effective improvements to your kitchen, and let an ordinary wood dowel do the extraordinary for you.

How to Fix Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime Error 28 "Out of Stack Space"

Runtime error 28 is commonly witnessed in Windows XP and Vista. In general, the runtime error will bother the user, since it arrests the program from execution. At times, the program will be terminated without a notice too. This error usually arises in the form of an alert box that subject “Out of stack space”. When examined, this error is mainly induced due to intense use of functions and sub calls while the Visual Basic procedure access the procedure files which is kept unloaded from the system memory. When this error pops up, the software will be terminated instantly without a notice.

The runtime error 28 can be due to multiple reasons, but the primary reason will be due to lack of stack space that is required to execute the macros present in the MS WORD 2000, MS VC++, PowerPoint and other files. Also when the windows registry is corrupted, this type of error might occur as well. Any damage in the program files that is connected with the memory space and applications will also be a major cause of this error. The missing support of the Data Link Library files and the mislaid hardware drivers will act as the root cause of this error.

To fix the runtime error 28, you must clean the windows registry with the use of the windows registry cleaning tool. Repairing the registry will overwhelm the faults and errors and moreover the issues will be eliminated. Well, repairing the windows registry is quite tricky and also it is not an easy job to get it done. A minor mystification will damage your computer and moreover it results in data loss too. This is why it is always good to take a backup before cleaning the registry with the cleaner software tool. Also, do not amend the registry manually as it will result in unexpected errors and also the files will become corrupted.

When cleaning the computer with the registry cleaner, it thoroughly examines the system and detects the root cause of the runtime error 28. It is good to avail the support of a technician if you don’t have an idea to resolve the issue. It is definitely hard for a layman to work on the issue and resolve it properly. When your computer registry is cleaned, make sure you install a strong antivirus software to prevent from the virus and malware attack, since your computer will at least be safe from the further damages.

The Best Blues Songs Ever

It is entirely a matter of taste as to which are the best Blues songs. However it is possible to speculate as to the most influential songs.

It can be argued that Blues music bought about a greater awareness of the plight of African Americans, as new audiences became interested in its origins and originators.

I clearly remember as an adoring fan of Muddy Waters; Howlin Wolf and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, feeling outrage at the early 60’s news reports that a whole people were subjected to such terrible discrimination. The anti establishment feelings so typical of my generation, and empathy with subjugated Black Americans, would manifest itself in the aggressive British interpretation of their Blues music.

The adoption of Blues music by young British musicians, and their successful introduction of that music to white America, inspired a whole generation of white American musicians to rediscover the music and popularize it. This brought recognition to the Black musicians that had created it.

It is the ten songs that had the greatest influence on the “discovery” of Blues that I am presenting here.

Blues music was introduced into Britain after the war. Records came in through the sea ports, and well informed successful Jazz band leaders financed visiting Black artists to visit and play on their shows. Inevitably, their performance influenced the young British musicians who, were looking for something different from the pre war dance band scene.

Smokestack Lightening

Written and recorded by Howling Wolf.

Smokestack Lightening is based on a driving riff and has no chord changes. Released in Britain in 1964 by Pye Records, it reached the Top 50. In 1999, the song was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award

Boom Boom

Written and recorded by John Lee Hooker, the first American blues artist to do a club tour of Britain. Boom Boom was released as a single in 1961.
Boom Boom is a classic example of Hookers unique timing and chord structure.

The Animals recorded “Boom Boom” for their 1964 UK debut album “The Animals”. Their rendition generally follows John Lee Hooker’s version, except it conforms to a 12 bar sequence.

Worried Life Blues

The first song written and recorded by Maceo Merriweather in 1941

Inspired by “Someday Baby Blues,” recorded by Sleepy John Estes in 1935, however “Worried Life Blues” has gone on to become a Blues “standard” and has reputedly been covered by more artists than any other blues song.

I Got My Mojo Working

Written by Preston Foster and popularized by Muddy Waters. Possibly the most influential of the Blues artists to visit the UK. Covers of this were made by many artists but of special importance were Alexis Korner, a pioneer and possibly the first British Blues band with Blues Incorporated, & Manfred Mann, a highly successful commercial band. Both versions were released in 1964, in itself a testament to the impact of Waters original.

Baby Please Don’t Go

By Big Joe Williams, and covered by “Them” becoming the first “hit” record by Van Morrison in 1964. It became the weekly signature tune for the hugely influential television show “Ready Steady Go”. The “B” side of the single featured the now-legendary “Gloria”. It became a top ten hit in the UK, and launched “Them” and Van Morrisson to world fame.

Hoochie Coochie Man

Written by Willie Dixon and recorded by Muddy Waters in 1957 but covered by almost every blues artist since! The verse and intro are played over “stops” that were to become a feature of many blues recordings. The first cover version was released in 1962 by Alexis Korner on his album “R&B from the Marquee”

Crossroads Blues

Written and recorded by Robert Johnson in 1937 and largely unnoticed until Cream released their version in 1968. The song ranked #10 in the worlds greatest solo’s, contributed greatly to the world wide fame of the band and to Eric Clapton in particular.

This success bought Robert Johnson’s small but remarkable catalogue of songs to the attention of the music world and has earn’t him the acclaim he so richly deserves.

Sweet home Chicago

Robert Johnson 1937. This song has become the Blues “anthem”.

The list of artists who have covered the song is immense, including Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Status Quo, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Blues Band, and the 1980 Blues Brothers movie.

Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

Written and recorded by Solomon Burke in 1964, For many years it was the opener for the Rolling Stones live shows. They released a live version of the song on their 1965 E.P. “Got Live if you want it”. The Rolling Stones were to become the most successful Rock band of all time, and they have been fundamental to the wider awareness and appreciation of the early Blues artists. They took there name from a Muddy Waters song “Rolling Stone”. The songs riff was “borrowed” for the first “Small Faces” hit single “What You Gonna Do About It” also in 1965. The successful “soul” artist, Wilson Pickett covered the song and it entered the US charts in 1967. This song also features in the 1980 “Blues Brothers movie” The song, as are several of those mentioned, is ranked on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Hound Dog

A twelve-bar blues written by Jerry Leiber and originally recorded by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in 1952. In 1965 she toured Europe as a part of the American Folk and Blues festival that had become an annual event and had become so influential to the emergence of British Blues. The 1956 remake by Elvis was his second #1 hit and is possibly the first blues song to become a #1 hit record.

Arc Trainers Or Ellipticals – Which is a Better Workout?

What is the difference between arc trainers and ellipticals many people ask. I had the opportunity to review both and made my review and was surprised with the results.

Personally I am an avid cyclist and spinner and found the arc trainer to be exceptional at providing me with a cardio vascular that was second to none.

I was really huffing it using the arc trainer where I found myself having difficulty getting my heart rate up to a cardio zone on the elliptical.

The arc trainer gave me a more extended workout to the elliptical not to mention the extra work my thighs and glutes (butt) received as a pleasant surprise.

In addition to the extra work on the thighs and butt I also noticed the caloric burn was much higher for the same twenty minute duration.

Reviewing the arc trainer a little closer you find that the motion of the feet varies slightly than on the elliptical because the movement of the arc trainer is supposed to reduce the stress on the knees and hips since the foot plate is actually at a different angle.

One of the top manufacturers of these machines is Cybex where you can go to find additional information on the “independent research” they conducted.

Regardless my review seemed to support their finding because I noticed the shifting more of the workload to the muscles around the hip joints.

Not that any one way is better than the other this is just personal preference which to me seemed a bit awkward but I was able to adjust accordingly.

So overall my suggestion would be for training I give a double thumbs up on the arc trainer especially if you are crunched for time since you are able to burn double the calories in the same amount of time.

If you are interested in saving money considering buying a used arc-trainer because the savings can be as much as fifty percent or more. If you are going to workout then choose a commercial quality arc trainer and find a reputable company that specializes in used commercial fitness equipment.

Below I have my personal recommendation for a company that specializes in used commercial gym equipment and would give them two thumbs up as well.

Crossbows – What Is the Best Crossbow For Hunting?

I know by talking with fellow hunters there is very seldom a hunter with the same taste or hunting style. Just show up at your local coffee shop during hunting season. You’d swear the manufactures were paying them for their marketing skills. Prime example of this is: I have a very good friend that produced two of the top-selling compound bows. One made Outdoor Life for top rated seller of the year. With that being said, he prefers to shoot a longbow. He preached in his seminars the differences between a pass through and minimal penetration of an arrow he prefers minimal so, the arrow can dig into the vitals every time the animal takes a step. The difference between us is, I prefer my arrow with a large entrance and exit hole with the arrow buried 10″ into the ground on the other side. So, here being great friends we have two completely different opinions.

What I can do is give you logical advice to help you choose the right crossbow. That is to get out to your nearest dealer and sling a few bolts down the range. Try all the brands and models he has to offer. Believe me, you will fall in love with them all. I try to point out some of the positive things that some crossbows have that will fit your needs. I try to inform you on necessities you may find that will work well for you when you’re hunting. I will point out ones that seem good, but may be more of a hindrance to you. You have to ask yourself, what are you willing to spend? Some of the crossbows are very expensive while the others less expensive. Whatever you choose, I don’t think there is a bad crossbow on the market today.

After you purchase the crossbow of your choice, another frequent question is asked, “What type of arrow should I use?” Crossbow arrows are normally called bolts. The bolt used for the crossbow usually depends on the model and manufacture of the crossbow. Another thing you should consider is the knock. Usually there are two styles; a flat knock which should be used with the Horton & Barnett Crossbows, while the other is a half-moon knock used with the Excalibur & Ten Point Crossbows. One other thing you should consider is the length of the bolt. They range from 16″ to 22″. The bolts should be matched for the crossbow you purchase. Do not take this lightly or you could get seriously injured.

With that being said, most crossbows are very smooth fast shooting with extreme accuracy. With a little practice, you will be filling your freezer & stuffing sausages. Be sure to check your rule books as most states don’t allow hunting with crossbows unless you have some type of disability permit or a senior over 65 years of age. For Wisconsin residents, cross your fingers crossbow hunting may be just around the corner.

Sinus Drainage – Dealing With Drainage That Does Not Go Away From a Totally Different Angle

The fight appeared to be a losing battle with sinus drainage, mucus, pressure. As a child, before modern allergy testing was a common medical test, I remember blowing my nose almost constantly at certain times of the year. Although green mucus was not a problem, as I grew up things didn’t get much better. But one day I came to the realization that I did not have to spend the rest of my life wearing out handkerchiefs. So I began to be open to ideas.

We were living at the time in California and a friend of mine, noticing my sinus misery, asked me if I had gone to see a chiropractor about my sinus problems, I said no. Then he told me about this story about how chiropractic had helped him solve some other health issues he had. Frankly, what I had heard about chiropractic had not been the most favorable. After some serious cogitation, nevertheless, I decided to go see the one my friend had gone to.

I still remember that first visit as if it were last week. I waited my turn–the waiting room was packed with people, some had come from other states just to see Dr. Z. Space does not allow for a full detailed account of the visit, but I can assure you it was the most interesting visit to see a health professional I ever had. In a nut shell this is what happened:

The doctor asked me if I wanted to have done the procedure he had described, I said yes. He laid me down on a special table and swung over my head a machine that looked to me like a drill press, but instead of having a bit at the end it had a metal devise with a rubber tip. The contraption tip was placed on the “right spot” and while he was talking to me he pressed a button and compressed air pushed the rubber tip onto that spot in a fraction of a second. I had just been “adjusted.”

The theory behind the adjustment is that some misaligned bone on the back can exert pressure on the nerves running through the spinal cord. This robs the nerves from delivering their vital nerve energy to the various organs, etc., and thereby causes them to malfunction. The latter reveals itself in symptoms of various kinds which regular medicine does not know what is causing them–pain, green mucus, discomfort, cramping, malfunctioning of the immune system, etc., etc. My verdict on this chiropractic procedure I will summarize thus: This story happened to me a number of years ago. Since then I have had my back re-checked every so often, and when needed readjusted, ever since. It is a step in the right direction to put the body in a better position to deal with whatever is causing your sinus drainage, green mucus, or whatever sinus issue, by using its own defense mechanisms properly tuned.

Blocked Drains – What’s The Best Way to Unblock a Pipe?

The best way to see inside your pipes is to hire a plumber that has a drain camera. A drain camera is a specialised video camera that is inserted inside a drain pipe and provides a live video feed of what is going on inside the pipe.

Once your plumber has determined where the blockage is inside your pipework and what it is being caused by they are then able to insert a high pressure water jetting machine inside your pipe which can clear out the blocked pipe in an efficient manner. If you hire a plumbing company that carries these tools your backed up toilet or blocked sink can be cleared all in one visit, quickly and with little disturbance.

So what exactly is a High Pressure Water Jetter?

A Water Jetter is a drain clearing machine that delivers water at very high pressure and volume inside your blocked pipes that cuts away what ever is in its way. It runs around 5000psi which is a high pressure speed perfect for clearing blockages within pipework.

What is better – A Water Jetter or an Electric Eel?

Electric Eels which are also referred to as a plumbing snake or a drain snake, is very abrasive to the inside of pipes. It operates by spinning its cable around on the inside of the drain pipe, which in turn rubs against the pipe. When the cable rubs in the same place for a period of time as it is pushed down the pipe work it can cut or crack the pipe and even punch a hole through the pipe.

A lot of plumbers today are still using the ‘old fashioned’ style Electric Eel method of clearing drains. Even though a High Pressure Water Jetter is overall much better technology and provides better results. You may be asking yourself, “what is a better choice for clearing blockages. An Electric Eel or a jetting machine?”

The advantages of using a Water Jetter are:

Cost Effective:

The cost involved to get a pipe cleared with a Water Jetter will mostly be cheaper than an Electric Eel because it generally takes less time to clear the blockage. The exact location of the blockage can be pin pointed with the drain camera and then cleared with the Water Jetter. This allows the blockage to be cleared much quicker so you won’t be paying for hours and hours of labour.

The costs involved to get a pipe cleared with an Electric Eel are usually higher because Electric Eels can be very labour intensive depending on the depth and location of the blockage and how bad the blockage is. The Electric Eel can not be used together with the drain camera and it does not flush the debris out while in operation. The clearing has to be done first, and then the pipe work needs to be flushed before the drain camera can be inserted to assess the cause and extent of the blockage. This means a lot of time wasted.

Saves Time:

The Water Jetter is much faster at clearing a pipe blockage. On average it usually takes around 45-60 minutes to clear a blockage. The usual time it takes to clear blockages with an Electric Eel is very variable and depends on different factors such as the depth of the blockage and how bad the blockage is. Some blockages can take up to a whole day to clear with an Electric Eel and often require hand or machine excavation to repair a badly blocked drain.

Better Quality Clearing:

The Water Jetter is very effective at clearing pipes. It only requires water to scrub the inside of your pipes and it clears tree roots so well that the drain camera can no longer see them. It also cleans the walls of the pipe, washing away built up waste, fats, oils and debris plus anything else that may have built up on the pipe walls. The Water Jetter can travel up to 140 metres and maintains its effectiveness right to the end which is long enough to clear the majority of buildings.

When a plumber uses an Electric Eel to clear a blocked drain or clogged drain it often leaves behind tree roots and other debris. This can lead to future debris and waste sticking on the uncleared roots and debris easily creating another blockage. The Electric Eel has a cable and cutting head that spins and smashes around in the pipe, banging and hitting the pipe walls. This can chip, cut and crack the pipes leading to further damage which can even collapse the pipes. The further an Electric Eel travels up a pipe it loses its effectiveness and is usually no longer effective after 25 metres.

Do you need an experienced plumber to operate a Water Jetter?

A Water Jetter is a specialised tool that needs to be operated by a licenced plumber that is experienced in using the correct cutting ends for each job.

What to Look for When Buying a Cordless Driver/Drill

Whether you are a construction professional or a weekend warrior with a never-ending to-do list, a cordless drill is probably on your ‘can’t live without it’ list of tools. Unfortunately, there are so many different makes and models on the market that it can be a bit overwhelming to try to choose the right one for the right price. Of course, you want a dependable drill that will be able to stand up to your tasks and complete your projects with no problems but what other factors should you look at when making your choice?

One thing to consider is the type and size of chuck you want. Most modern drills have a keyless chuck that allows you to change bits almost effortlessly with one hand. However, if you plan to do any super heavy-duty drilling projects, you may want a keyed chuck, which tends to provide a tighter grip on the bit. The size of the chuck makes a difference as well. While a 3/8″ chuck is sufficient for most everyday purposes, you may need a ½” chuck if your projects involve very heavy or thick materials. This is because the ½” chuck provides a higher torque that is much more effective for a wider range of drilling needs.

It is also a good idea to look at the size and weight of each of your potential cordless drill options. Full size drills are usually better for working with heavy materials while compact models are better suited to working in tight spaces or for those with smaller hands. Compact models are also easier to work with because they can be slipped in a work apron or pocket while not in use. Before making a final choice, pick up and test several models to see if the weight is comfortable for you. Consider how long you expect to be holding the weight and make sure to select one you can work with easily. While testing various models, make sure you look for cordless drills that have clutch adjustments so you can vary the speed easily to match different uses. This can save you from many later headaches and stripped screws.

A final consideration when shopping for a cordless driver/drill is the size and type of battery pack you wish to use. The available types are Ni-Cd, Li-Ion, and NiMH. Of the three, Ni-Cd batteries are the least efficient and take the longest time to charge. They are also notorious for developing a ‘memory effect’ if they aren’t fully charged and discharged regularly. Once a battery develops memory effect, it has a drastically reduced performance and will have to be replaced. When buying a cordless drill, look for one with a smart charger that is designed to keep your battery at optimum performance levels. As for power, cordless drills typically range from 7.2v to 32v with the higher power levels usually coming with a higher price tag. For general use, an 18v battery is the maximum level you will need.
