How to Cut Off the Water System in Your House

If there was a soggy emergency at your house, would you know what to do? How does the water system work, where does all the water come from and how do you turn it off? Knowing the answer to these questions could be the difference between a bit of a wet carpet and completely drenched house.

Most houses have a cold water tank, usually in the loft, which feeds most of the taps in the house, plus the lavatory cistern. The tank is filled by the rising main. The only tap fed direct from the rising main is usually the kitchen cold tap, which should always be used for drinking water. A washing machine and garden tap may also be fed by the rising main. A few pre-war and country houses have all the taps, and lavatory cistern, fed direct from the rising main.

Whether you have a burst pipe or you just want to change the washer on a leaky tap, you will need to turn the water supply off first.

For taps that are fed from the cold tank, turn off (clockwise) the gate valve or isolating valve in the appropriate pipe. If may be in the loft. When you have identified it, label it so you don’t forget.

If there is no gate valve or isolating valve on the pipe, you will have to drain the cold-water tank as follows:

1 – Put a piece of wood, like a broom stick, across the top of the tank and tie the ball valve to it so that the valve is out of the water and thus closed. This will stop the water coming in from the rising main.

2 – Turn on the bathroom cold taps until the water stops flowing, and then turn on the hot taps (only a little water will come out of them). There is no need to turn off the boiler as the hot water cylinder will not be drained.

For taps that are fed from the rising main, turn off (clockwise) the main stopcock, and then turn on the tap until the water stops flowing.

If you don’t know where the stopcock is then it is worth going and having a look for it now. In an emergency such as a burst pipe you will want to be able to find it quickly. In most houses is it where the water supply enters the house. It is often under the kitchen sink or in the larder. If the house has a cellar it may be down there. In a bungalow look in the airing cupboard.

In a last resort, if the stopcock is jammed or doesn’t stop the flow of water you may need to turn off the water supply from the outside stopcock in from of your house. It’s under a small square(ish) metal cover either just inside your garden or in the pavement out the front.

The stopcock is below ground level at the bottom of a pipe, so you need a key which you will have to improvise. The stopcock may have a tap in which case a length of wood with a couple of notches at the end would do the trick.

Fire Caulk, Putty and Sleeves – The Very Basics

I in no way would classify myself as a fire stop expert, not even a novice, but what I do know is you have to start some place! The purpose of any fire stop system is to maintain the integrity of a firewall to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. Notice I said “system”. Many contractors simply use fire caulk, just filling any cracks or voids. But you want to use a system.

What is a system?

There is more to fire stopping than just applying fire caulk and putty. Each manufacturer tests his product and develops a system proving stating that his product, when installed in a certain way will meet certain fire ratings. Many systems will call for a thin wall pipe, most contractors are using EMT, some fire wool and fire caulk at putty. But also note, they will tell you how much fire wool, caulk and putty to use and how much the tube can be filled.

The basic types of product you will use are fire caulk, applied with a caulk gun or moldable fire putty sticks. In addition to that you will find fire pillows, sleeves or pass through devices, mortar and foam products. Again, just don’t by a product and stick it in, you may end up pulling it back out!. Have a system.

More and more common in fire stop products, especially in the low voltage field are sleeves with intumescent fire putty built right in. Many contractors prefer these products because of their ease use. While these products tend to be expensive, they are fast to install and are much more fool proof then other types of systems. Abesco products has a round split sleeve that allows it to be used in retrofit applications.

Who makes it? Hilti is probably one of the bigger players in fire stop. They do an excellent job of getting to the architects. Many projects are specified Hilti. 3M, Grace, Abesco and STI (there are many more I know!) also have a full line of fire stop products. Most electrical, mechanical and drywall supply houses handle fire caulk along with most of the big do it you self stores.

My disclaimer- Again, I am not a fire stop expert, nor does this article even begin to scratch the surface of fire stop systems or applications. Just remember the importance of knowing what you are doing, and use brand name products and use their “system”.

Description and Uses of Pop Rivets

There are many kinds of fasteners, one of which is the rivet which can be used for a variety of different applications. The process of riveting dates back to the days before welding and the use of bolts were common in construction. Many old bridges scattered across the world are still functioning with their original rivets. There are many kinds of rivet-type fasteners each of which is employed for a certain purpose; however it is pop rivets that we are most interested in here.

Before we take a look at pop rivets though we think it is necessary to explain the concept of how rivet-type fasteners work. A rivet is a small metal shaft with a head on one end that is inserted through two adjacent sheets of material, often metal, to hold them together. The clasping effect of this kind of fastener occurs when the end without the pre-made head is bent or ‘bucked’ which is why this end of the rivet is generally called the ‘buck-tail’ end. The fastener expands as it is riveted in addition the buck-tail effect of the bent end which lends extra grip. Unlike screws, rivets do not have a spiral thread and generally two riveted surfaces are quite narrow in breadth so a screw would not work here as screws normally hold by penetrating deeply into thick materials and grip that way.

The phrase ‘pop rivet’ has a peculiar ring to it that sounds like the noise a riveting gun makes. Incidentally, you will need a special riveting gun in order to successfully squash the buck-tail of any kind of rivet so that it holds the two construction surfaces in place and this goes for all rivet-types, not just pop rivets. This last mentioned variety of rivet is also often referred to as a blind rivet and is not as capable of bearing heavy loads as other kinds of rivets. It is ‘blind’ because the riveting is done from the one side whilst the other remains unseen.

Pop rivets have something called a ‘mandrel’ in the middle which is the portion that expands when it is fastened and then snaps off at the end. One of the problems with these rivet-types is that the mandrel is susceptible to loosening as a result of vibrations. If the mandrel falls out, the rivet will be hollow inside and therefore not very strong and because of the mandrel this rivet-type tends to rust more easily.

The interesting thing about pop rivets, however, is that before they were invented it wasn’t possible to rivet from only one side of a construction and herein lies its value as a fastener. When it is impossible to gain access to the back end of a structure is when this rivet-type comes in handy. A joint is a good example of where a blind rivet-type might be used. Another advantage is that it is possible to work in situ with this type. They are also easy to use and have a neat appearance.

Netherland Dwarf Rabbit – Feeding and Housing

The Netherland Dwarf is the smallest of the 45 breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, weighing in at a mere 2 lbs when fully grown.


The digestive system of a Netherland Dwarf is sensitive, even by bunny standards. A constant supply of fresh water is a must; rabbits cannot absorb water from their food. A gravity water bottle attached to the inside of their cage will prevent spills and contamination. Also, a constant supply of timothy hay provides a great source of fiber and allows for all day nibbling. Alfalfa could be used but is higher in calcium and protein and lower in fiber. Too much calcium can lead to serious kidney and bladder problems. About 250 mg a day is sufficient for a mature Netherland Dwarf.

Rabbit chow should be limited to about 1 ounce per pound in weight daily, unless you have a pregnant or nursing doe, or a baby less than four months old, in which case a constant supply should be provided. Only buy a month’s supply of chow at a time as the pellets can spoil or mold, causing illness. They can also lose nutrients important to your rabbit’s physical well-being. Pet rabbits do well with a pellet that is 18-20% fiber, 14-15% protein and 2-3% fat. Once you find a good brand, stick with it. Frequently changing their food can cause dangerous digestive problems.

For rabbits over six months in age, you can supplement their basic diet with raw fruits and vegetables in quantities of about a teaspoon at a time. Introduce new foods over a couple of weeks to give their systems time to adapt. Kitchen scraps work great here, but foods close to spoiling are better for the compost pile than your bunny’s belly.

Good choices are apples, grapes, pears, oranges, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries, papayas, pineapples, melons, mangoes, peaches, tomatoes, peas, beans, kale, carrot tops, mustard greens, dandelion greens, sugar beets, parsnips, parsley and potato peelings. Take care to remove any seeds or pits first.

Never feed your bunny lettuce. Lettuce contains lactucarium, which can cause severe diarrhea. Diarrhea can kill a rabbit. Romaine lettuce has the lowest amounts of lactucarium of the common garden varieties. Other foods to avoid include cabbage, parsnips and tomato leaves.

Include an enclosed area inside the hutch to give your bunny a place to hide when scared, or just to get out of the weather. Bedding material should be provided in the form of wood shavings and/or clean straw. Indoor housing needn’t be as utilitarian, but must still provide a safe, secure and comfortable home for your pet.

Traditionally, wire-bottomed enclosures have been used to allow droppings to fall into a tray for easier cleaning. Wire cages can be hard on bunny feet, however, and a solid area should be provided for comfortable resting. Alternatively, rabbits can be litter-box trained. Never use clumping cat litter or cedar chips, both of which can be harmful if ingested. Food, hay and water containers should be cage mounted to avoid spilling and contamination.

Regardless of how luxurious the accommodations, however, your bunny will still need room to romp and roam outside of its cage. Care must be taken to ensure your rabbit’s safety anywhere you allow it to run. Inside spaces must be bunny-proofed. Outdoor spaces must be properly enclosed.

D-Aspartic Acid and it’s analogs D-Sodium-Asparate and N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid are becoming very popular with bodybuilders looking to boost their testosterone to the very highest levels. However this has a very ugly side effect that could potentially make this innocent supplement the devil in disguise. It works by increasing something called steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein, which is a critical enzyme in the production of testosterone. It is found in the testes and is a rate limiting step in the creation of testosterone. Increasing the activity of StAR is one of the main ways that DAA helps the body make more testosterone and it was shown in human studies that D-Aspartic Acid can give roughly a 30% increase in testosterone production! This is amazing for a completely natural product, but that boost in testosterone has one downside that may actually be making your situation worse! The good news is that if reversed, it could actually make the conversion to testosterone even higher and could boost your testosterone levels above 30%!

Aromatase is a nasty enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone to estrogen in the body. It is what robs the bodybuilder of the robust effects of testosterone and changes the balance of your hormones. As we age, we produce even more aromatase and that is often why you see men getting fat, soft and flabby as they get older. Aromatase and it’s end product estrogen are the enemy of any man wanting to keep that rock hard physique and feel his best! Unfortunately it seems that the “holy grail” of supplements D-Aspartic Acid may actually cause the body to produce more aromatase, which is something you definitely don’t want! Making all of that extra testosterone isn’t going to do you much good if a large part of it converts to estrogen in the body, so you want to stop that from happening! It has been shown in the literature that D-Aspartic Acid can increase testicular aromatase levels, making your testosterone to estrogen ratio sub par (1,2,3) which can certainly be an issue for the bodybuilder. Luckily, you can add in some very potent aromatase inhibitors that will stop the conversion of testosterone to estrogen by binding and locking up aromatase! You will want to use a combination of a competitive inhibitor of aromatase and a suicide inhibitor of aromatase to maximize the benefits of D-Aspartic Acid!

Two aromatase inhibitors are on the market that will do the job quite nicely and they are very potent. The combination of these should give you all the boost you need to really check the aromatase enzyme and keep estrogen levels down! That combined with a pure D-Aspartic Acid product will give you a solid one-two punch that will deliver results! The first ingredient is 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One, which is a competitive inhibitor of aromatase that is in the same potency range as prescription drugs used by bodybuilders to reduce estrogen, like Arimidex(R). 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One has a very strong affinity for the aromatase enzyme, giving an almost drug like inhibition! This will work great with D-Aspartic Acid and it’s analog N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid at reducing that testicular aromatase and increasing testosterone even further. The competitive inhibitor will benefit from a suicide inhibitor, which are getting harder to find these days! The only one really left on the market is 3-Beta-Hydroxy-Urs-12-En-28-Oic Acid, which is a fairly weak suicide inhibitor, but it is very effective in combination with the above mentioned 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One! The combination of these two is a very good addition to any D-Aspartic Acid cycle and should always be used in my opinion.

One product on the market has both 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One and 3-Beta-Hydroxy-Urs-12-En-28-Oic Acid in addition to Ginger extract which should also supercharge the effects of D-Aspartic Acid and that is Formadrol Extreme from LG Sciences (also called Forma-D on some web sites). Ginger increases conversion of cholesterol to testosterone as well, making it a natural stack with D-Aspartic Acid. So, Formadrol has it all when it comes to being stacked with D-Aspartic Acid and the only formula that I know of that has both aromatase inhibitors.

So, there you have it! D-Aspartic Acid is an exciting supplement that can certainly increase testosterone, but it should be stacked with aromatase inhibitors for maximal effects!

Fluoride – From Smokestacks to Your Family’s Drinking Water

Fluoride and fluoridation of drinking water has been in the news a lot lately. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the whole issue and I guess it’s time for me to put my two cents worth in. I decided to write this article based on a couple of things.

One, I have been doing a lot of research on water quality and water filters for a new book (more on that later) and what I am learning has really opened my eyes. Two, I just read an article in my local paper that the Water Authority that supplies my tap water just raised the level of fluoride in my water and it got me a little riled up.

Isn’t Fluoride Good For You?

So, why all the fuss about fluoride? Isn’t it supposed to be good for our teeth? What’s the big deal? In this article I’ll try to sum up my opinion based on the research I’ve been doing.

Take Your Medicine- Whether You Want It Or Not!

First, I might as well come right out and say it. I thing it is WRONG to put fluoride in drinking water. Whether or not it is as bad for you as some people claim, the fact is that it is the only chemical added to our tap water in order to do something other than make the water safe to drink. And yes, I said chemical. (More on that in a minute.)

Fluoridation basically amounts to forced involuntary medication of entire communities with a substance that is known to be toxic at certain levels. Listen to what one dentist was quoted as saying in my local paper (emphasis is mine): “You’re not getting harmed by it more than the other chemicals and things found in the water.” Am I the only one who thinks that is a pretty strange endorsement?

Smokestack Scrubbers

Which brings me to the “chemical” comment. See, while many supporters of fluoridation will say that fluoride is a natural component of lots of water, the reality is that almost all of the fluoride that is added to tap water is an industrial waste product from the fertilizer industry. The most widely used one is fluorosilic acid or FSA. FSA is recovered from smokestack scrubbers and sold to municipalities across the United Stated to fluoridate their drinking water. So instead of having to pay to dispose of this very toxic chemical waste product, fertilizer companies make a profit by “enhancing” your family’s drinking water with it. I bet they have more lobbyists than you do. Smokestack scrubbers!

If that’s not enough to make you question the practice of fluoridation, consider this. Many studies are now concluding that any benefits that might come from fluoride are from topical use, not ingestion. In fact, this was just one of the reasons the EPA Headquarters Professional’s Union came out with a statement opposing fluoridation as early as 1999. This group is made up of about 1500 scientists, engineers, lawyers and other professionals who work at the EPA headquarters in Washington, DC. By the way, they listed political pressure to raise the fluoride levels as the main reason they issued the statement. Gotta love those lobbyists.

Have We All Been Scammed For Years?

I could go on and on but I’ll try to wind this up soon. One other thing to be aware of is that there is a lot of research now that questions whether fluoridated drinking water has any positive benefit for dental health. Studies comparing dental health in areas with and without fluoridation are frequently showing little or no difference. In fact, most of Europe does not fluoridate their water and their statistics on tooth decay are about the same as the US.

Bottom line- in my opinion there are enough concerns about possible health issues with fluoridation to really tick me off when I read that my local water authority is not only adding a known toxin to my water but has now increased the level. I mean, SMOKESTACK SCRUBBERS for Pete’s sake! Anybody know a good lobbyist?

How To Strike An Arc When Arc Welding

Learning how to properly strike an arc when arc welding can be quite a headache. There are a few methods to strike an arc and we will go over them here. The one thing that probably makes it the most difficult is that you cannot see what you are doing, so I strongly recommend getting an auto darkening welding helmet. It will probably be the most important investment you will make on your quest to learn how to arc weld.

The basic theory behind how to strike an arc is simple. You must make the metal of the electrode contact the metal you are welding on. It must then be immediately drawn away from the metal about 1/4 of an inch. If you do not draw it away it will simply stick to your work. If that happens a quick twist and tug will usually get it loose. If it doesn’t break free on the first try you will want to squeeze the clamp on the electrode holder and pull that away. Keep in mind any time the electrode is stuck to your work, the welder is being shorted out. This will cause it to overheat much quicker, and may blow a fuse or breaker in your breaker box.

There are a few techniques on how to strike an arc, I recommend you try them all and see which is most comfortable for you. Remember, practice is the key to being a good welder. The first method is the jab method. The way this works is you position the electrode about 1/2 an inch away from your work. Then flip your helmet down. Now you want to quickly jab the rod into the work then immediately pull it back. Another method is the scratch method. This method works very much like striking a match. Just imagine the electrode is the match, and the location you wish to lay your welding bead is the striker. If you make sure to use a very quick stroke you are much less likely to have your electrode stick when using this method.

One common problem people have is that no matter what the electrode simply freezes to the work. If you are experiencing this, it most likely means that the amps need to be turned up on your welder. Try turning it up 10 amps at a time until it stops sticking. If you are having success getting the arc to start, but then it immediately goes out, you are pulling the welding rod too far away from your work. Remember, you only want to pull it back about a 1/4 of an inch.

Once you have the arc going, you need to immediately start feeding the electrode into it. The electrode will get burned up fairly quickly, so you must keep it at the correct distance to maintain the arc. When it is at the correct distance it will make a crackling noise. If you get it too far away it will be more of a popping noise with sparks flying in all directions. If it is too close you will see the arc start to go out and it will make much less noise. If the arc goes out after you have been welding a little you can restart it much easier while the metal is still molten. Simply stick the electrode back into the puddle while you can still see it glowing through your mask.

Sometimes it is necessary to have the arc start in exactly the right place. This can be difficult without an auto darkening helmet. One trick is to place a small piece of scotch tape on the metal that ends right where you want the bead to start. This way you can place the electrode on the tape with your helmet up, then drop your helmet and simply drag it off the tape.

Learning how to strike an arc can be one of the most frustrating steps in learning how to arc weld. Fortunately, once you get it down, it becomes almost natural. Learning how to arc weld is mostly a process of practice. Get yourself some scrap metal and spend a few afternoons burning up electrodes before you try to weld anything important.

Sinus Drainage – The Allergy Factor

One common ailment that affects millions is sinus drainage. In many cases this can be dealt with successfully. A few tips offered here could make the difference between this sinus misery and being free from it. Frankly, the answer could be simpler than many think. For example consider allergies.

House dust

There are many types of house dust–at least this is what an allergy specialist will tell you. Some people have cats and/or dogs living inside their homes and inherit their pets’ dander. Some of us, don’t have pets. This is one reason why dust may vary from house to house. One way to find out if you are allergic to house dust is to get real close to the carpet or floor and breath in some of the dust and see what happens. Often, depending on how allergic you may be to it, the reaction is almost instantaneous. Or it may take a few minutes to manifest itself. If you are not sure of the result you can see an allergy specialist and most likely he would be glad to run a test on several kinds of house dust and see which one you may be allergic to. The test is done on the arm by injecting a small amount of serum from house dust.

Plant pollens

You may be allergic to a few pollens or to many and in various degrees. If you suspect a specific flower from shrubs, trees, weeds, etc., that you may be allergic to get real close to it and sniff some of the pollen and see what happens. In some cases the reaction is quite potent, so you may want to approach the plant or tree gradually before breathing deeply close to it. As with house dust there are tests that can be administered to find out for sure the degree of any allergy to pollens. I was allergic to several pollens and once I began to receive allergy injections on a regular basis for several weeks my sinus drainage was reduced by about 80 percent.


Our modern society demands a variety of chemicals to make our lives more comfortable. The problem is that some of them can be quite potent and produce allergic reactions in certain persons. Certain brands of bath soaps, laundry detergents, deodorants, bath room cleansers, room fresheners, etc., could be the cause of an allergic reaction that in turn triggers the sinus drainage. So you may want to experiment a bit and see if any of these items could have a chemical or other substance that is at least part of the cause of your excessive sinus drainage.


It usually pays to be observant and willing to spend some time checking elements in your environment which you could be allergic to and that are the main cause of your excessive sinus drainage.
