Argentium Silver Vs Sterling Silver

Sterling silver jewelry is very popular. However, one of the drawbacks of Sterling silver is its tendency to tarnish very quickly. There are many products available to bring back the beautiful luster of Sterling, but too often in our busy lives, the time needed to take care of fine Sterling silver just isn’t available.

Traditional Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver (92.5%) and copper (7.5%). You will often find the numbers 925 stamped on the jewelry, guaranteeing the piece has 92.5% silver.

Pure silver is much too soft to use for most jewelry, but with the small addition of copper, silver becomes much stronger while retaining its ability to be shaped and soldered. The problem is Sterling Silver becomes tarnished quickly by the reaction of sulfur compounds in the air with the copper. The result of the copper and sulfur reaction is the formation of a dark tarnish on the metal.

Argentium Silver has basically eliminated the problem of tarnish. It is the most tarnish resistant silver available today. Peter Johns, a professor and silversmith at Middlesex University, discovered in the 1990’s he could create modern Sterling Silver that did not exhibit the problems of tarnishing. This is accomplished by substituting 1% of Germanium for copper. The silver content still remains at 92.5%, but the Argentium Silver resists tarnishing.

Germanium loves oxygen! Germanium in Argentium oxidizes first over the copper and silver in the presence of air, forming an invisible protective germanium oxide surface layer. The oxide is able to continuously replenish itself at ambient temperatures through the migration of germanium atoms to the surface. The preferential oxidation of germanium prevents the formation tarnish. This keeps your silver jewelry looking beautiful without the constant need to be cleaning the tarnish.

When working with silver alloys they need to be soft and malleable during forming or shaping processes. However, the finished articles need to be hard and durable, so that the metal is not vulnerable to scratching, denting and deformation.

Argentium Silver has the ability to be formed into complex shapes when in its fully soft condition. It is easy to solder and set stones. When finished with the construction of the jewelry piece, it can be easily hardened by means of simple heat treatment. Argentium silver’s hardness is substantially increased without the risks associated with quenching.

How to Dock the Tails of a Litter of Cocker Spaniel Puppies

I had the job of docking the tails of a litter of puppies, and the only reason I did this, was because I wanted to know how to do it myself, since I figure I should know as much about my dogs as I can, and I knew a veterinarian was going to do this, and they do charge money for this, and I wanted to know how to do this myself.

Well, lucky enough for me, I know a lady, that breeds dogs, and she has a 1 hour show on Animal Planet, and she has been raising and breeding dogs for years, and lucky enough for me, I know her!

Now I don’t recommend this to the novice or person that is could not handle it. In some countries, it is illegal to dock the tail on a dog. In some countries, like the United States, they still do it, and recommend it, because the Cocker Spaniel Dog’s tail, gets to bushy, that it will pick up all kinds of things, and become a big mess pretty quick. This is the main reason that the tails are docked.

There are different ways to dock the dogs tails. One way is with a band, that you put on the puppies tail, and it will eventually make the tail just fall off. Some veterinarian’s will tell you different times to cut the tail, if you ask 5 different veterinarian’s you might get several different time frames. Usually 2 to 3 days is the normal, but you should always check with your vet first, and let them know what you are doing.

When we did it, we also removed the extra claw dogs have, that they do not use, and you would not want it to get caught up on anything, while they are playing or jumping around.

Some of the items we needed to dock the tails, would be, sterilized scissors, a burning iron or soldering iron, one with a small tip that gets red hot. Some rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs, and fresh clean towels.

She taught me that you put a tight rubber band on the puppies tail, and the reason you want to do it early in life, is they can not feel it, at least that is what people say, and when I did it, it is like anything, they notice, but they don’t freak out about it.

After we cut the tail at the right place, you can ask your vet, or look it up online. I remember when I took my litter of puppies to the my vet a long time ago, he did not seem to know much about tail docking, and he asked me what place he should cut the tails, luckily enough I knew already, and he is the vet.

After you cut the tails off, you would take the heating iron, and put it right on the spot where you just cut it off, this sounds like the brutal part, but it is necessary so the puppy won’t have any bleeding. You just for a second, tough the fresh cut, and the iron will burn it, and make it so it won’t bleed anymore. You would use the rubbing alcohol to sterilize everything, and clean the puppies tails.

I had my lady friend that raises dogs teach me how to dock the tails myself, and she had lots of experience, and does all the dog shows, she loves showing off her dogs, and she had a TV show about it that I saw. The 2nd time I did a litter of puppies, I asked my 18 year old son at the time, to help me do them. He helped me do them, then when it was over, the told me he never wanted to do it again, he felt like he was going to pass out, he told me, and it’s not for everyone for sure.

That was the only 2 litters of puppies I ever did myself, and I have went back to having the vet do them, and even for that, check about, I found a different vet that had much more experience, and he charged about half what the first vet was charging me. I wanted the experience of doing it myself, because I just needed to know.

Magic Jack – What Is It, And What Does It Do?

Magic Jack is a small piece of equipment that plugs into a USB port of your computer and, using either your computer’s speakers and a microphone or a regular telephone, allows you to make phone calls through your computer. The regular telephone can be plugged into the RJ11 socket on the device the same way you would connect a telephone to a traditional wall socket. Phone calls can then be made, depending on the user’s choice, from either the phone handset or the computer.

This device is fully supported on both Windows PCs and Apple MACs, and as long as you purchased your computer within the last 5-7 years you should be able to set up and run both the device and the software on it. Magic Jack uses the Internet to make, place, and receive calls and your computer must remain on when the phone is in use. When incoming calls arrive and a phone is not plugged into the device the computer program that comes with it will cause the computer to “ring”. If the computer is off then the phone calls will be sent to voice mail, and the user will receive an email notification when they arrive.

This type of technology is call known as Voice over IP or VoIP, and is a way of making phone calls using an Internet connection instead of a regular phone line. VoIP takes analog audio signals, like your voice, and converts them to digital signals that are then transmitted over the Internet. A broadband or high speed internet connection is required for this service and can be obtained through cable, DSL or other local area network. VoIP quality over a broadband connection is generally superior to calls over an analog line, and most users are very satisfied with it. Sometimes however the quality can be poor, and is usually due to network congestion. Also users may notice that there is sometimes a small amount of voice delay on calls but this usually does not cause any real problems.

Magic Jack offers all the essential telephone services such as voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting, and caller ID. When activating the device the user will receive a phone number that will be different from their original telephone supplied phone number. At this time the servicing company is unable to port over existing numbers. It will be important for the user wishing to receive calls through their Magic Jack to inform callers of the number change.

You can offer to promote their business at your Grand Opening in return for things like food, drinks, or other prizes that can be used as giveaways. These businesses may even agree to promote the grand opening to their email or mailing list if you promise to include their business name as sponsor on all of your promotional materials.
  5. Print and handout fliers – Fliers work, if the message is strong. Make sure to craft an enticing message that will encourage folks to want to attend your grand opening, include some graphics, and print some fliers. Then, get out and there and give out as many as you can! Including a coupon or entry into a giveaway contest as part of the flier is a great way to entice people to attend. Can You See Your Opponents Hole Cards in Online Poker?

Ever since online poker has become such a popular game, a multitude of software programs have popped up that promise to help you win by cheating or by seeing your opponents hole cards. In order to answer the question, can you see your opponents hole cards, you must first understand a little about how the poker client works and how probable it is to view what other players are holding.

First, the software used by every major pokersite online is a secure system in which the cards are usually served from a separate server as the poker client itself. What that means is while the poker client’s server send you the table information, players names and their actions, a completely different server sends the card data to each player.

There are two separate send requests in online poker, one being a private send and the other being a public send. The private information is visible only to you, while the public information is available to all players. The private information, (such as your hole cards), is accomplished by the secure server sending what is known as a packet directly to your computer.

Secure Packets

The secure packet can only be opened and deciphered by a key embedded in your client software and at your computer. Even if a program were able to intercept the packet, it would NOT be able to decipher the contents unless it had your embedded key as well.

What that means is if a software program claims it can see opponents hole cards, it would need to have every key of every player (Which is embedded on YOUR computer and created when you downloaded the software). This is much like a unique identifier, which allows the packet to be deciphered, revealing your hole cards only to you.

Way Too Valuable to Sell

Secondly, if a program did exist that could see hole cards of other players, it would quickly be circumvented by the poker clients and without much delay rendered useless. Furthermore, if a program existed, it is highly doubtful that anyone would be interested in selling it, as it would be more lucrative to use than to sell.

Although there are plenty of good programs out there that will help you win at online poker; it is better to avoid any with ridiculous claims such as seeing hole cards. Stick to programs that show sound strategy, and how to use the software of the poker client to your advantage.

Real Poker Strategy

So the next time you see a claim that you can view your opponent’s hole cards in online poker, avoid it as nothing more than a marketing trick. To truly find ways to win at online poker, invest in studying poker strategy and learning more about how the software works.

Lighting Tips – What Type of Lamps Will Light Up a Living Room Best?

Your living space should ideally be an extension of yourself, a place where you can truly relax; and in order to do that most effectively, it should be a place where you feel most comfortable.

The lighting in your living room will play a significant part in the way that the space feels, and in daylight hours people will typically tend towards an area that can draw in significant sun light, and create a more natural ambience, without the need for an artificial presence. However, when the sun goes down and that space is filled with darkness, artificial light becomes the only option!

There are several considerations that need to be carefully factored into your choice of lighting. In my opinion first and foremost you must understand what the main requirements of your space are.

It’s not uncommon to find that the living room doubles up as a dining room, and in some cases it can also be the kitchen and even the bedroom. Divide out the areas of the room where possible so that through the use of lighting, you can create a different feel in keeping with the function of each area of the overall space. If you can maintain a separate space for eating and for relaxing, then you can afford to light the dining area more actively when in use, with a separate hanging light above the table, or a high level floor lamp positioned locally.

For relaxing, the living space will lend itself more towards a softer amount of light and coming from a lower level source, such as a corner lamp or table lamp, producing just enough light to alleviate the darkness whilst maintain a relaxing environment. The use of more than one lamp within a single space is a cost effective method of creating these lighting transitions in rooms that perform more than one function, as typically configured ceiling array’s will not operate independently from one another.

In a modern uncluttered living space, it can be beneficial to make a feature out of the light source itself. A well designed floor lamp can add balance, and complement the existing furniture, as well as filling the room with an interesting style of illumination. Unless its main function is a centre piece it should be in proportion with the other furniture and in keeping with the overall styling of the room. A dimming function can add excellent control over the creation of the appropriate mood.

Finally, the colour, or warmth of the light is a very important factor which should be carefully considered, fortunately often easily adjusted through the replacement of the bulb providing the light source.

The temperature (colour) of the light is typically specified in Kelvin, and therefore denoted with the symbol K on most conventional bulbs. Modern, neutral spaces can support a whiter light much more than those which are decorated around a richer palette of colour, and then need a warmer, more yellow glow to complement the decor. These warmer fluorescents have a temperature of around 2700 K, while the whiter light can be up to and around 6500 K. At these high white levels the light is practically simulating daylight and therefore more commonly found in office spaces or the more modern, plain living environment. Unless your living space can support it, go for a warmer light which will provide a comforting and relaxing glow.

Don’t forget to consider the green credentials of the light source, not only whether the bulb is energy-efficient but also if the lamp is manufactured from recycled or recyclable material. Simply switching bulbs to the efficient fluorescent type can save money and help towards having a smaller carbon footprint; they provide the same result, and last considerably longer, so it’s a real win-win situation.

Ultimately it must come down to style and taste, making a connection with a piece of design that resonates and depicts certain positive emotions from inside, and can express your style on the outside. Unless it can do that then it’s just performing a function, which is fine but certainly a less engaging and personal possession to own. On the flip side it must also be producing the lighting requirement, instead of being just a piece of radical art or design, otherwise it’s not suitable for any job other than being aesthetically pleasing. Finding a perfect blend between style and substance will always be the most productive approach, and if you can find that in a lamp, buy it.

Radiant Barrier Installation in Hot and Cold Climates

Understanding how to properly install radiant barrier insulation in relation to your local climate is simple if you understand how heat is traveling within your home.

In the south or southern climates with mild winters, radiant barriers are installed in the top of the attic or along the roof joists. In the scorching summer months, radiant heat hits the roof of a building and is absorbed into the home. The daily temperature is already uncomfortable to most peoples preference. This daily temperature is the starting point for an attics base temperature.

Radiant heat travels into the attic while the attic temperature climbs. The fiberglass insulation, although good in winter months, warms and holds this elevated temperature into the night. Attic temperatures can easily average 120 degrees in summer months in any climate. All the while you want the inside of your home around 70 degrees.

Adding a radiant barrier to the roof joists creates a break or barrier to stop this absorption of radiant heat. The attic is now not allowed to heat up as high as once before. This lowers the temperature difference between your attic and your living space.

Heat loss for homes in these warm regions is generally not much of a concern. Therefore, the thought of warm air escaping from the living space into the attic is not dealt with.

In northern or cold climate regions however, the major concern is stopping heat loss from escaping out of the living space. In these homes, radiant barrier insulation should be installed on the attic floor, laid over the existing fiberglass insulation. As heated air from a home radiates into the colder attic, a barrier is created that holds back this radiant heat and does not allow it to escape.

Now, what happens if you want to control both summer heat gain and winter heat loss in a home?

If you have been paying attention you will know the answer is do both. Install radiant barriers in both the roof joists, and across the attic floor. This effectively seals off the attic, allowing radiant heat to be neither gained nor lost.

Always make sure to use a perforated product in attic applications to allow the necessary moisture transmission.

Choosing the Right Fire Safes For Your Home Or Business

Fire safes are designed to protect their contents from damage during a fire. There are several factors to consider when choosing fire safes, with the fireproof rating assigned to the safe being the most important.

The fireproof rating gives and indication of how well the fire safes will protect the contents from damage under actual fire conditions. The rating is usually expressed in minutes or hours. For example, a 1 hour 350 degree F rating means that the fire safes have been exposed to a 1700 degree F fire for a period of 1 hour, and that the temperature inside the safes did not rise above 350 degrees F. The 350 degree F number is a low enough temperature to protect documents and other fairly durable items from permanent damage.

If you need to protect more delicate valuables or electronic backup media, there are fire safes available that have a special media rating. A media rating is determined in the same manner as a regular fireproof rating, except that the temperature inside the fire safes must not rise above 125 degrees F. In addition, since electronic backup media is subject to damage due to water, a media rating indicates that the humidity inside the fire safes will not rise above 80% during fire conditions. The test includes using water to put out the fire.

Another factor to consider when choosing fire safes is the burglary rating. Not all fire safes are burglary rated. The burglary rating gives an indication of how long it would take to break into the safe. Usually specified in minutes, the burglary rating for fire safes gives the amount of time that it would take an experienced locksmith to break into the safe using common locksmith’s tools. The higher the burglary rating, the more secure the fire safe.

There are a number of other factors to consider when choosing fire safes. One factor is the locking mechanism that is used to lock the safe. Available types of locks include traditional mechanical combination dials, mechanical keylocks, electronic keypad locks, and biometric locks. The electronic keypad type of locking mechanism is much more convenient than the mechanical dial or keylock type. With an electronic keypad lock, the user simply enters the combination to the safe on a PIN pad, similar to the ones used on ATM and debit machines. This causes the lock to release on the safe. Consider fire safes with a biometric lock for even more security and convenience. A biometric lock uses a fingerprint scanner to grant access to the safe. The user simply places their index finger on the scanner, and the safe opens if the fingerprint is a match.

Fire safes that use electronic locks usually allow several different users to be given access to the safe. This feature usually comes with the ability to view an audit trail, showing who accessed the safe and at what times. This data is usually viewed on a built-in display panel or uploaded to a personal computer for viewing.

As you can see, there are a number of factors to consider when choosing fire safes. To ensure that you make the right choice, choose and experienced safe and vault company to do business with. They can help you select the right safe for you from among a wide variety of fire safes.

Fireproof Home Safes – 3 Things to Know Before Buying a Fireproof Home Safe

Home safes are meant to protect valuables and precious items from outside intruders. They are often heavy to carry, often over a hundred pounds in weight, securely locked, with some form of lock securing the inside, and often small enough to hide in closets. Clearly, they are well protected from common burglars and thieves. But one thing that owners of home safes often overlook are the internal threats to their valuables. If a fire overtakes a home and burns everything, there is little ordinary home safes can do to protect the goods within them. For that reason, fireproof safes are growing in popularity by the day.

With a protective outer shell to safeguard against the flames, fireproof home safes ensure that everything inside will survive the damage a fire will cause. Thus, while everything outside of the safe, clothes, televisions, and such, may burn to the ground along with a house, contents within a safe which cannot be replaced will not.

Most home safes, be they ones that go into walls or ones that are small and easily hidden, can be bought as fireproof. They cost a little extra, but are well worth the extra investment to guarantee protection for expensive and/or irreplaceable goods.

However – before you decide to purchase a fireproof home safe, be sure you actually need one.

There is no need to overspend on a safe with features and specifications you don’t really need. For example. If you intend to place your safe in an already fireproof section of your home, there is no reason to buy a safe that also features that same protection. Additionally, there is no reason to invest in a safe that protects from the flames if you do not intend to use your safe, for whatever reason.

Of course, most people do indeed use their safes to protect costly and important items and do need safety against fire. So it should come as no surprise that most safes priced above the lowest amount possible do indeed protect against the flames. A fire is just as likely as a burglary is, so if you are going to protect against the latter, why not also protect against the former?

One thing to remember before buying a fireproof safe is that they cannot protect valuables against fires occurring WITHIN the safe!

It is not recommended to put flammable materials and/or lighters into a safe ever. You would be quite upset to open your safe, only to find that everything inside had been damaged and destroyed. A safe expert can consult with you on what valuables can and cannot go into a safe. In most cases, all of the important ones will be able to go in.

Lastly, how can you be sure the fireproof home safe you’re looking to buy is really fire resistant?

One last important thing to note is that most fireproof home safes undergo UL fire testing. UL fire tests are tests performed on safes by the Underwriters Laboratory, an independent party testing safes against many types of harsh conditions. When a safe passed a UL test it is labeled as “UL Listed”. This is the label you want to look for! There is also a second type of label called “Tested to UL Standards”. This means the safe has been submitted for testing, but did not necessarily pass the test. Safes subjected to fire tests by the “Underwriters Laboratory” are tested for either 1/2, 1 or 2 hours. When all documents inside a safe remain completely undamaged during these time frames, the safe receives a UL classification accordingly. The higher the classification, the longer a safe is proven to protect the contents of the safe against fire.

The bottom-line is that when it comes to protecting your valuables, all possibilities should be thought of. Losing an item through a fire or through another persons intrusion results in the same ending. And while fireproof home safes may cost a little more, there is never any harm in spending a little extra now to feel more secure later.

Is That a Brown Recluse Spider in the Corner of Your Ceiling?

Brown recluse spiders seem so abundant these days that you see them building webs all over your home, and most people have no idea that the spider they’re looking at is a recluse.

Spiders are spiders – right?

When I first started working as a pest control technician I had no idea what a brown recluse looked like. Oh, I knew they have a fiddle shaped marking on their backs, but you must get really close to the spider before you can recognize that mark.

If you get that close you’re a whole bunch closer than safety demands.

My first month as a technician I worked with another tech as a trainee, visiting a number of customers, and learning how to inspect and treat for pests. My instructor, and the pest control company’s resident entomologist, told me that brown recluse spiders were no threat here in Indiana.

The truth soon proved otherwise, and luck was with me when I learned that truth.

During my training period I studied local pests and their habits, and one book I read had pictures of brown recluse. I gave them no more than glancing looks, but those short glances anchored a fuzzy picture in my mind that set an alarm off the first time I actually did see a recluse in one of my customer’s buildings.

It was in the basement area of a major hospital that I made my first recluse sighting. As I looked at the spider moving around its web something about the legs seemed familiar. To me a brown recluse’s legs are distinctive; they are very long and slender. I remember thinking at the time, “That looks like those pictures I seen of brown recluse spiders.”

I caught that spider on a glue board, took it back to the company with me, and had a look at it through a microscope that evening. Sure enough a violin shape was on that spiders back.

From that moment on I had a definite, and permanent, picture of the brown recluse legs in my head. That’s a picture that never faded, I see it as clear today as I did that day – almost 10-years ago.

That picture saved me from a number of bites over the years.

One time I opened a small box, looked in, and seen what I thought was a set of those legs scurrying for cover. I dropped the box, put a glue board in it, and used a long tool to move the items inside around. A few moments later I had two brown recluse spiders trapped on that glue board. A few feet further along the wall I opened another box to spot another recluse in residence. I got that one on a glue board too.

If you see spider webs around your home, be careful about approaching them. Brown recluse spiders are everywhere these days. I’ve found them in my bathtub, and often in my storage barn.

Find some pictures of these spiders; familiarize yourself with how their legs look. Get a picture of those legs fixed in your mind well enough that you at least recognize a potential brown recluse if you see one.

Don’t take a chance on getting too close to these spiders. Their poisonous bites leave you with some nasty wounds that won’t heal soon, and sometimes spread through your body.

When you think you see one understand that he probably has a family. You probably must treat your whole home to minimize infestation.

Working and Efficacy of Penis Pumps

If you are suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED) or want to enhance the size of your penis, you can try one of the many penis pumps on the market for effective treatment. There is a range of options available when it comes to penis pumps. Gather as much awareness as you can about these devices, in order to make the most effective choice.

What are penis pumps?

As the name suggests, penis pumps are devices that use a pump mechanism to help you get an erection. A basic penis pump has components that include a hollow cylinder, a pump mechanism and a tube that connects the cylinder to the pump mechanism. There is a difference between penis pumps and vacuum pumps. The difference lies in the fact that vacuum pumps are clinically tested devices that are only available through a physician. The basic premise of both, vacuum pumps and penis pumps remains the same. A doctor might prescribe one over the other taking cognizance of your general condition.

Penis pumps – Working

The penis pump tube must be placed over your penis by holding it tightly against your body. It’s important that the tube is sealed tight; a thick water based lubricant will help you in this regard. After you have secured the pump, you need to create the vacuum. This could either be done manually or electronically. By drawing air out of the cylinder a vacuum is created, which helps draw blood into the penis. This results in an erection.

The efficacy of penile pumps

There is no doubt that the proper use of penis pumps will give you an erection. However, it’s important to know just what to expect from penile pumps and not believe tall claims. A penis pump is a device that can only help you experience an erection. If there is very little or no sexual stimulation, you might face difficulty in maintaining that erection. The erection can go away within a short time. There is little evidence to suggest that the prolonged use of a penile pump will increase the size of the penis. But, there is definitely evidence to suggest that the use of a penile pump coupled with the use of a cock ring or penis ring will definitely help delay ejaculation. This is one of the ways how premature ejaculation can be treated.

Can these pumps be used on someplace other than your penis?

Penile pumps are not configured for use on any other part of your body, but you can get creative with them. There are some people who use the pump on some of the sensitive parts of the body including nipples, clitoris, or some other erogenous zone. When you use the pump on some other part of your body, the principle remains the same. Its use will increase the blood flow to that particular region. The sensation changes drastically when the pump is removed. So, if you want to use these pumps somewhere other than your penis, you can use a bit of trial and error to experience the perfect sensation.

Penile pumps – The safety aspect

There are a range of pumps available in the market. You need to select a pump that is safe for use. As is the case with all devices, there are definitely some pumps that can be considered harmful for use. A pump that creates a strong vacuum but does not have an integrated release valve is a recipe for injury. To stay away from the harmful effects of these pumps, you need to keep in mind certain precautions. You shouldn’t use them if you have a tendency to bleed easily or have a blood clotting disorder. Lean manufacturing has been successfully deployed in the auto industry, in the manufacture of motorcycles, in mattress manufacturing, in the production of tires, and even in the service industries. All these sectors and industries had their own way of doing things before latching on to lean manufacturing techniques. The chief difference between these and the pharmaceutical industry is that the pharmaceutical industry’s “way of doing things” is, and has been for a long time, more firmly entrenched.

Manufacturing in our industry still takes place largely in an environment of current good manufacturing practice (cGMP). And the focus of cGMP is on ensuring that manufacturing produces safe and effective products, which means a host of processes that have to be thoroughly documented, including documentation for both technical standards and operational procedures. The fear has been that, with the pharmaceutical emphasis on regulatory compliance and technical dependability, it will just be too difficult to implement this solutions in a cGMP environment.

The twin pillars of lean manufacturing are elimination of waste and creation of value-within the context of ongoing and continuous improvement. Paradoxically, lean manufacturing involves a set of solid objectives and rigidly documented processes carried along on the current of adaptability directed by newly discovered places for improvement and by customer demand. The challenge for pharmaceutical companies, then, lies in determining how to implement lean solutions in a cGMP environment that really isn’t amenable to necessary short-term improvements and changes.

The four principles that govern any lean manufacturing system are: 1) clearly defined relationships with direct communication; 2) a scientific methodology for implementing improvements; 3) a standard for all work; and 4) a pathway that ensures simple and direct flow. So the job for this consultants is convincing companies that they can and then helping them to put these principles in place alongside cGMP.

In the lean manufacturing process, there is a very direct supplier-customer relationship and tools and methods in place to ensure clear communication, which serves to keep products flowing along the production process and cycle time consistent. But in a pharmaceutical cGMP environment, various departments are usually discrete and siloed, and quality governs cycle time. An effective lean manufacturing implementation in this industry would have to give equal importance to quality and cycle time.

Lean uses a scientific methodology in its quest for total quality. The pharmaceutical industry, however, has generally been reactive in nature-that is, when something goes wrong, only then is action taken to fix it and make necessary improvements. It has been suggested that what’s needed here is for pharmaceutical companies to embrace the FDA’s risk-based approach.

With respect to a standard for work, lean manufacturing and cGMP are more closely aligned. It still remains, though, for pharmaceutical companies to effect a full implementation of lean solutions when it comes to operational procedures.

In the cGMP environment of the pharmaceutical industry, there is already a direct product pathway. The problem, though, is that it’s far from simple because of batch production. Consultants have advocated an effort to move from traditional batch manufacturing to a greater emphasis on single-unit flow.

The pharmaceutical industry, because of its cGMP environment, has been pretty shy about meeting lean manufacturing solutions. Good lean manufacturing consultants have the knowledge and skills to introduce them and nurture a relationship. And it could very well turn into a fruitful and long-lasting marriage.

Tilt and Other Poker Terms

There are some poker terms often used by pundits, in articles and by players at the table which you may find helpful to learn. Here they are, tilt and all!

BIG BLIND The largest of the two required (called “forced”) bets, twice the size of the posted “small” blind.

BOARD Area where five “community” cards are placed for all players to use to make a hand.

BULLY An aggressive tactic used by the strongest player with the most chips to force another player’s hand.

BUTTON The round “button” or disc that shows which player plays last.

BUY-IN The amount of money you have to “put up” in order to play in a tournament.

EARLY POSITION First two or three seats located to the left of the big blind.

FIRST POSITION First player on the left of the big blind.

FLOP The first three cards dealt to the community, dealt face up.

LATE POSITION One or two seats to the right of the button.

MIDDLE POSITION Players 4th-7th player positions after the big blind.

(THE) NUTS The best possible hand showing with what is on the board.

RAISE Betting larger than the previous bet.

RERAISE Making another bet after the pot has already been raised.

RAKE What the House Charges to operate the game.

REBUY In tournaments, if it is a re-buy event, you can re-buy chips when you run out.

RIVER The final community card dealt.

SHOWDOWN Cards are turned over on the river by the players left in the game.

TURN the fourth community card dealt.

And the one everyone needs to know – TILT. After a few bad hands some people play too aggressively or too “loose” and usually end up losing their chips.

Use these terms to improve your poker game and understand what the other players are talking about, but try to stay calm and avoid the dreaded tilt!

The Flawless Barbecue Party

The three most essential elements of any barbecue party are the guests, the weather and the food. I can not make suggestions about your friends and family, you are on your own there, but I hope you will find my suggestions for the other two fronts practical.

An impromptu party in the garden is great and often the best parties are the ones that just happen off the cuff, but if you want something a little more formal or more impressive then you have to make plans. The first move is to pick a date far enough in the future for most people to be unlikely to have a prior engagement, but not so far that they might forget about your barbecue party.

Depending on where you live of course, try to pick a date when it is unlikely to be cool or wet. This is hard in places like the UK, but may be easier where you live. If the party goes on into the night it may get cool anyway and you could hire a few gas patio heaters in advance just in case. You could also have a sunshade or sheltered seating area in case of blazing sunshine or a light shower.

These days a lot of people are vegetarian and you will have to prepare in advance for them and other dieters, if they make up a sizable number of your guests. You could send out RSVP invitations and ask your guests to make known any particular dietary requirements. I am not really suggesting that you have to cater to everybody, but if you have a lot of Jews or Arabs coming you will need to offer an substitute for pork chops and of course there are other minorities too.

In fact, you may have to do some research on the religions of the people coming to your barbecue party, because often cooking utensils may not have touched pork of meat or shellfish. Most people of the guests with these dietary needs will have been in this situation before and will understand if you go some way to offering an alternative.

For this reason, you will have to get your RSVP cards back at least a week before your barbecue party and do a bit of investigation on the telephone or the Internet. Then start preparing the barbecue side dishes. These should include baked or and boiled jacket potatoes and potato salad, baked beans, egg quarters and coleslaw along with pickles, relish, onions, chutneys tomato and curry sauces (hot and not so hot), as most people will eat them. These can be prepared a few days in advance and kept in Tupperware containers in the fridge. Bread in the form of buns is also important so that people can make sandwiches.

It is imperative for a slick operation, to have your party area fully prepared before your guests turn up. it is a good idea to set the music system up in the garden shed or the garage to protect it it from any sudden shower. Provide plenty of tissues for wiping greasy fingers and plenty of receptacles for the debris. Finger bowls with lemon water would be useful for this objective too.
