Plumbing Tips When Going on Holiday

Getting the chance to go on any holiday is an exciting time for anyone. Whether it is going for a short break to Europe or going to the warm tropical island get away.

On your return from holiday looking well tanned and relaxed, you enter your home only to find that your floor is completely drenched in water and the first human instinct is to panic.

After the plumber has left and you have paid him with your last pound from your bank account because you are so skint coming back from holiday (which we are get), you are left with the daunting question to yourself, “why didn’t I think to double check the taps?”

Here are some of my tips to ensure that your holiday remains memorable for the right reasons.

Please read advisory note before following the procedures for turning off your mains water supply.

– Isolate mains water feed to property. In order to do this, you need to know where your mains water supply stopcock is (if in doubt contact a plumber or neighbour). They are usually located under the kitchen sink but for older properties such as in London, they are commonly found under the staircase on the ground floor.

– Once you have located the mains water stopcock to property, you need to turn it off which often is easier said than done. These stopcocks are normally of a brass construction and tend to seize very easily.

– You will need to first spray the stopcock with WD 40 or some other type of lubricant. If you don’t have WD 40 or a similar lubricant (which is preferred) you can use ordinary cooking oil (that’s it, ordinary cooking oil but be careful otherwise you could make a mess by using this option).

– Once you have sprayed/lubricated the stopcock, it will be easier for you to turn it off.

– You need to turn it off in a clockwise direction (DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN).

– If the stopcock is stiff to turn off, you will need to be VERY CAREFUL as mentioned above, these stopcocks are often made of brass or other similar soft metals and YOU DO NOT want it to snap.

– As you turn slightly clockwise, it often becomes very stiff to turn by hand, STOP turning clockwise and turn the tap anti-clockwise to loosen it, re-spray/lubricate again and repeat previous action. Each time the action is repeated, you should be able to turn the stopcock more and more

– Turn on the kitchen tap (cold water only) and after a few seconds the water should stop. THAT’S IT!

Advisory Note:

If in any doubt, contact a qualified plumber. Do not as mentioned above, over-tighten the stopcock otherwise this could snap in the shut position leaving your property permanently without water. You should not have to use any tools other than your hands and some lubricant as mentioned above. If you cannot turn the mains water supply off by hand, contact a qualified plumber.

Aircraft Rivets and Aerospace Fasteners

The two major types of rivets used in aircraft are the common solid shank rivets, which must be driven using an air-driven gun and bucking bar; and special (blind) rivets, which are installed with special installation tools. Solid shank rivets are used widely during assembly and repair work. They are identified by the material of which they are made, the head type, size of shank, and temper condition.

The material used for the majority of solid shank rivets is aluminum alloy. The strength and temper conditions of aluminum alloy rivets are identified by digits and letters similar to those used to identify sheet stock. The 1100, 2017-T, 2024-T, 2117-T, and 5056 rivets are the six grades usually available. AN-type aircraft solid rivets can be identified by code markings on the rivet heads. A rivet made of 1100 material is designated as an “A” rivet, and has no head marking. The 2017-T alloy rivet is designated as a “D” rivet and has a raised teat on the head. Two dashes on a head indicate a 2024-T alloy designated as a “DD” rivet. The 2117-T rivet is designated as an “AD” rivet, and has a dimple on the head.

A “B” designation is given to a rivet of 5056 material and is marked with a raised cross on the head. Each type of rivet is identified by a part number to allow the user to select the correct rivet. The numbers are in series and each series represents a particular type of head.

Countersunk head rivets are used where a smooth finish is desired. The 100-degree countersunk head has been adopted as the standard in the United States. The universal head rivet (AN470) has been adopted as the standard for protruding-head rivets, and may be used as a replacement for the roundhead, flathead, and brazier head rivet. Rivets may not be replaced by a type having lower strength properties, unless the lower strength is adequately compensated by an increase in size or a greater number of rivets. It is acceptable to replace 2017 rivets of 3/16 inch diameter or less, and 2024 rivets of 5/32 inch diameter or less with 2117 rivets for general repairs, pro vided the replacement rivets are 1/32 inch greater in diameter than the rivets they replace.

Rivet edge distance is defined as the distance from the centre of the hole to the nearest edge of the sheet. Rivet spacing is the distance from the centre of the rivet hole to the centre of the adjacent hole. Unless structural deficiencies are suspected, the spacing and edge distance should duplicate those of the original aircraft structure. If structural deficiencies are suspected, the following may be used in determining minimum edge distance and rivet spacing. Special fasteners may require an FAA field approval.

Blind rivets are used under certain conditions when there is access to only one side of the structure. Typically, the locking characteristics of a blind rivet are not as good as a driven rivet. Therefore, blind rivets are usually not used when driven rivets can be installed.

The 2117 rivets may be driven in the condition received, but 2017 rivets above 3/16 inch in diameter and all 2024 rivets are to be kept packed in dry ice or refrigerated in the “quenched” condition until driven, or be re heat treated just prior to driving, as they would otherwise be too hard for satisfactory riveting.

Aerospace fasteners, special fasteners and blind fasteners.

When solid shank rivets are impractical to use, then special fasteners are used. Special fastening systems used for aircraft construction and repair are divided into two types, special and blind fasteners. Special fasteners are sometimes designed for a specific purpose in an aircraft structure. The name “special fasteners” refers to its job requirement and the tooling needed for installation. They are used in fluid-tight areas, on aircraft in air intake areas where rivet parts may be ingested by the engine, on aircraft control surfaces, hinges, hinge brack ets, flight control actuating systems, wing attachment fittings, landing gear fittings, on floats or amphibian hulls below the water level, or other heavily-stressed locations on the aircraft. For metal repairs to the airframe, the use of blind rivets must be specifically authorized by the airframe manufacturer or approved by a representative of the FAA.

Self plugging friction-lock cherry rivets. This patented rivet may be installed when there is access to only one side of the structure. The blind head is formed by pulling the tapered stem into the hollow shank. This swells the shank and clamps the skins tightly together. When the shank is fully upset, the stem pulls in two. The stem does not fracture flush with the head and must be trimmed and filed flush for the installation to be complete. Because of the friction-locking stem, these rivets are very sensitive to vibrations. Inspection is visual, with a loose rivet standing out in the standard “smoking rivet” pattern. Removal consists of punching out the friction locked stem and then treating it like any other rivet. Mechanical-lock rivets have a device on the puller or head which locks the centre stem into place when installed. Many friction-lock rivet centre stems fall out due to vibrations; this in turn, greatly reduces its shear strength. The mechanical-lock rivet was developed to prevent that problem. Various manufacturers make mechanical-lock fasteners such as: Bulbed Cherrylock, CherryMax, Olympic-Loks, and Huck-Loks.

Common Fence Building Mistakes to Avoid

Many people assume they know how to build a fence correctly because they know to place the fence posts in the ground, add rails, and add slats. The key, they believe is keeping the whole thing level. That is important, but there are little known tips that can help you build a fence that looks better and lasts longer.

Start building a fence by making holes every 8 feet for the treated posts, which are usually 4″x4″x8′. Dig two feet holes with a posthole digger. Here’s the secret to ensure your posts are stable. Once the cylindrical hole is dug for the fence post, go in and dig at an angle creating a hole shaped like a ball. This will provide an anchor for the posts once it is set in concrete.

There is a danger to your fence of which few people are aware. That is the linger factor. When water runs down the face of the wood and lingers on the bottom lip it can be absorbed and rot the wood. This is the same reason why fascia boards are easily rotted and warped. Coating the top and bottom lip will prevent lingering water from ruining your fence.

A very common mistake is that people do not realize that wood does not stick to concrete. The simple solution to this problem is to paint the bottom two feet of the fence post with black roof tar. The tar will seal the posts and allow the concrete to stick to the post.

Once the posts are set and leveled give them a full day to dry. If you start nailing rails and slats to the posts before the concrete has had adequate time to set the posts will be knocked out of level.

The most secure and durable fence should be built with three rails. The top rail belongs on top of the fence posts lying horizontally. This also gives you a way to measure the instillation of fence slats. They should not extend 8 inches above this rail. Place the center rail evenly spaced between the top rail and the bottom rail. The middle and bottom rail are not placed horizontally like the top rail. Place them vertically so that they will not warp and will be stronger and last longer for your fence.

Inside the Park

Inside, you have several options for cabin rentals in Yosemite National Park. Several lodges offer cabins or tent cabins (more about those later). Curry Village offers cabins with a bath, cabins without a bath, some specialty cabins with sitting areas and some with fireplaces, and Stoneman cottages, along with tent cabins.

Tent Cabins Inside the Park

o Housekeeping Camp, along the Merced River, offers concrete-walled cabins with a canvas roof, and a canvas wall to separate the sleeping area from the living area. Most have beaches and face the river. They are also the only tent cabins in the park that provide a fire ring.

o Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, located in the high country of Tuolumne Meadows, offers tent cabins on a cement floor with canvas walls, and can hold up to four people. There is no electricity, but there are candles and a wood burning stove. The Lodge is only open June through September.

o White Wolf Lodge, located on the Tioga Road about 30 miles from Yosemite Valley, offers tent cabins on a concrete floor with canvas sides. There is no electricity in the cabins, but candles and a wood burning stove come with every cabin. They are open mid-June through September 1.

o High Sierra Camps are essentially for back country hikers. Spread out on a loop spaced about 5 to 10 miles apart, they provide canvas-sided tents with steel frame bunks. There are restroom facilities available, but hikers need to bring their own linens and towels. These cabins are only available in the summer months, usually June through early September.

Cabins Outside the Park

Not all cabin rentals in Yosemite National Park are located inside park boundaries, but some are extremely close by.

o Yosemite West offers lodging and cabins outside the park near the Badger Pass Ski Area and on the Wawona Road, in Oakhurst, California. It is located outside the park boundary, and about 30 miles from the valley, but it’s much closer to Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

o On Highway 120 outside the Big Oak Flat Entrance west of the park, you can find a wide variety of hotels, and cabins, just a stone’s throw from the road into the park.

o On Highway 140 outside the Arch Rock Entrance, you’ll find numerous cabins and lodging, some along the Merced River, just about 30 to 40 minutes from the main part of Yosemite Valley. One of the major towns with lodging in this area is El Portal, but there are others, too.

The History Of Steel Reinforced Concrete

There is a number of building materials that have been found to be exceptional when used in the construction of buildings. One of these exceptional building materials is steel reinforced concrete. Steel reinforced concrete is a specific type that has had strong steel rebar or fibers added to it while wet, creating a very strong type of concrete that is able to withstand almost anything when it has dried. Because the results of using steel reinforced are so good for the strength of the building, most modern buildings today use steel reinforced concrete in the construction process.

The advantages of using this in building construction was first discovered in the mid 1800’s by a man by the name of Joseph Louis Lambot. He found that by adding thin steel bars or steel fibers to concrete, he could greatly increase the strength of the concrete, making it better for use in a variety of applications. In the early years, this was used for making a number of items, such as reinforced garden tubs, road guardrails, and reinforced beams. There were a number of different types of reinforced concrete products on the market because construction firms all wanted to use the product, but no standard method of production had yet been developed.

Over time, many different companies tried their hand at creating the perfect type of steel reinforced concrete. Through much trial and error, the best versions of this became widely known while the lesser brands slowly faded away. Buildings that used reinforced concrete in their construction began popping up all over the world, especially in the United States and Europe. This caused the buildings to have stronger support and last longer, allowing constructors to begin building upward and reducing limitations on weight and height for the buildings. One company in Europe completed over 7,000 buildings using reinforced concrete during its first ten years of operation.

In 1878, the first system was patented in the United States by an American by the name of Thaddeus Hyatt. The Pacific Coast Borax Company refinery, located in Alameda, California, was the first building constructed in the United States using this new system. The popularity of the process skyrocketed in the early 1900’s and soon, a majority of the developers in the country were using steel reinforced concrete in the construction of their steel buildings. The process has been refined over the years, constantly changing and improving the formula for making high-quality steel reinforced concrete.

Today, many of the buildings located in industrialized nations use steel reinforced concrete to make the buildings stronger and better able to withstand the ravages of time and the weather. Reinforcing the concrete that will be used on the building adds tensile strength to the concrete, making it much stronger and more flexible that regular concrete, which helps prevent cracking and breakage. Steel reinforced concrete can be used in a number of building applications, including floors, beams, supports, walls, and frames.

Traditionally, the joint most woodworkers learn in high school is the mortise and tenon joint.  Mortise and tenon joints are the woodworkers joinery method of choice because it’s a strong joint that also hides its construction well.  A fine quality piece of furniture usually has mortise and tenon joints in its construction.   But for the furniture maker, hobbyist or professional, making mortise and tenon joints involves a lot of preparation and setup time.  From figuring out how much stock is required for each piece to setting up your table saw.  It can be labor intensive.

For every piece that has a tenon or two you have to add the length of the tenons.  It’s very easy to make mistakes here because if you forget this step and cut the piece to the finished length you’ll have nothing left over to make the tenons with.  If the piece that you need to make 2 tenons for is 24 inches then you must cut it at least 3 or 4 inches longer to account for the tenons.  Also with your table saw, you have to sneak up to the thickness when cutting the tenons so they fit snugly into their mortises.  Mortises can also take a lot of time to make.  If you’re lucky and inherited a mortising machine then the job is much quicker, but, if you don’t have the money to buy a machine you will have to cut them by hand.

Replacing Wooden Dowels in Chairs

Many furniture pieces tend to fall apart over time. This is especially common of antiques or any furniture which may bear the brunt of weight, such as chairs. This may be particularly true of chairs with backrests made of dowels. Certainly, when it comes to antiques, the goal is to maintain the unique, aged piece for as long as possible. And as it pertains to more modern day styles of furniture, the goal is to maintain each piece for as long as the style remains chic and to the owner’s liking, as well as to maintain it for as long as possible in order to conserve economically. Should mishaps happen to a chair’s backrest, however, you may be able to salvage it by replacing the wooden dowels on your own.

Start by removing the weakened or broken dowel. If the dowel doesn’t come loose on its own, you may have to use pliers, a claw hammer, or even a drill to loosen it, depending upon the original design and method used to secure the dowel. This will need to be done for the joints at both the top and the bottom of the backrest.

Next, remove any residual of the original glue that remains in the dowel joint. You can use rubbing alcohol or a water and vinegar mixture to soften the remaining glue. If the dowel joint is large enough to allow it, use a cloth to remove the residual glue by wiping it away. If the dowel joint is too small to allow that, however, you may use a drill with a small 1/8 drill bit to gently drill away the residual glue. As with removing the dowel, this will have to be done on both the top and the bottom of the backrest, anywhere wood glue residual is observed.

Use the dowel you’ve removed to gauge the approximate width and length of the wood dowel you will need to replace it. Depending upon any breaks or other defects, this may not provide an exact measurement, but can certainly assist in a useful estimation.

Once the replacement dowel is measured, cut, sanded, or any combination of these preparatory actions, apply wood glue on either end. Also, apply a nominal amount of wood glue into the joint in which the replacement dowel will be inserted.

Then, carefully insert the replacement dowel into the joint. Use a damp cloth to remove any excess wood glue that may spill over once the dowel is inserted. You may use a clamp to secure the replacement dowel until it dries completely.

Once the replacement dowel is completely dry, tested as secure, and the clamp removed, paint the new dowel with the same or a highly similar color as the remainder of the chair. If the chair is stained, stain the new dowel with the same or a highly similar finish.

With minimal investment, a hardwood dowel can be used to salvage your chairs and any number of other furniture pieces which might cost a considerable amount if replacements are purchased. A dowel’s versatility and a woodworker’s imagination can make so much using so little!

Visual Inspections

The very first aspect in your chimney maintenance plan is a visual inspection. Before a chimney technician can determine the necessary maintenance requirements, a preliminary visual inspection is required. There are two types of visual inspections that can be performed.

Class I inspections are performed with the system on-line. A chimney technician will inspect the structure using binoculars from ground level, and they will also get a close-up visual inspection from access ladders & platforms. These inspections should be performed once a year to identify any potential problems that require more attention.

Class II Inspections are performed with the chimney or smokestack off-line. These inspections can use rope access techniques to give the chimney technicians a close look at the structure, both inside and out. The techs will install the rigging at the top of the stack, then descend down the entire elevation of the stack. Detailed notes are taken along with photos regarding any abnormalities, damage, or safety hazards. The survey will include viewing as much of the industrial chimney or smokestack as possible from base level, access platforms, and fixed access ladders. The rope access technicians will also drop down inside the structure so they can view the condition of the flue and liner. How to Make Custom Boutique Hair Bows

Are you ready to start creating your own boutique style custom hair bows? My secrets are now revealed.

My Collection is based on 2-3 different folds. The first is the basic boutique bow, the second the reverse flip and the third the mismatched bow. These are basic bow tying techniques which once mastered can be used to create the most marvelous bows. Let’s start with what you need.

Materials:

Ribbon: You can make a hair bow out of almost any type of ribbon but by far the most popular and easy to work with is grosgrain ribbon. Though I love to add in different types of ribbon I mainly stick to grosgrain, especially for the base bow.

Clips: There are two main types of clips you can use to attach your bows. Alligator or pinch clips and barrettes or French clips. Alligator clips are available as single prong or double prong and you can also find them with teeth. French Clips are barrettes come in a wide range of sizes from 40mm-80mm, 1.5″-4″. At the end of the day the type of clip you use comes down to personal preference or the preference of your customers.

Tools:
Knitting Crochet Thread – size 10. (There are many different things you can use to secure your bow – other possibilities are embroidery floss, 22 gauge wire, beading wire, or what I use, crochet thread – experiment with what you prefer) You can buy this in just one color or several different ones depending on your preference.
Glue (either a hot glue gun or Fabri-Tac) a good pair of scissors (small ones work well) Cigarette Lighter.

Optional:

Wire 22 gauge,
Needle nose pliers. Wire cutters.

The Boutique Bow: At first you might feel like you are all thumbs – but stick at it – once you have mastered the basic boutique bow you can use it alone for great everyday bows – use ribbon for baby bows, for toddlers, 7/8 for toddlers and then the full 1.5″ for nice big bows. You can try tying two boutique bows and stacking them together for an even fuller yet still basic look. The Boutique bow also forms the base of the If The Bow Fits Boutique Private Collection Bow.

Step 1: Hold the ribbon in you left hand with the end of the ribbon pointing down towards your left arm. Take the long end of the ribbon and flip it over the short end the ribbon to make a loop as shown above.

Step 2: Turn your left hand so the palm is facing up and form another loop placing it on top of the first loop so that your thumbs are touching through the ribbon.

Step 3: With your thumb on top, place your right forefinger behind the two loops and pinch to hold in place. Now let go with your left hand and reposition as shown above. If your loops are not quite even you can adjust them at this point.

Step 4. Holding the bow with you right hand, turn the bow so that the two loops are facing the left and then pinch the bow with your left hand to leave your right hand free. Take the long end of the ribbon and pull it away from you maintaining the angle it is on.

Step 5: Turn your right palm towards the roof so that the ribbon begins to form a loop.

Step 6: Look down at your bow. There is a cross in the middle of the bow. You want to slip the loop you are making in the middle of the cross. The long end of the ribbon should now be pointing diagonally towards you.

Step 7: Take the long end of the ribbon in your right hand and form the final loop by moving your right hand towards your left hand and pop you thumb on top to hold in place.
Step 8. Now carefully move your bow around so that the long end of the ribbon is on the right hand side. Place both thumbs on top of the bow. You can use this opportunity to adjust your loops if they are not quite even.

Step 9. Next carefully fold the middle of the bow like an accordion. To do this I move my left thumb up towards the top of the bow and pinch the top of the bow with my right hang. Push the pinched part of the bow towards the thumb and then press down and pinch gold. Move the left thumb along and repeat.

Step 10. Pinch the bow together with one hand and get ready to tie the bow in place.

Step 11. Take your crochet yarn and cut a piece roughly 17″ long. Holding the bow in your left hand take the yarn and slip it over the last three fingers of your left hand. Curl your fingers over and grab onto the yarn next to your index finger. Take the yarn over the centre of the bow and wrap it tightly around the bow two and a half times so that the yarn ends up at the back of the bow.

Step 12: Tie the yarn in a knot. You may want to do this by holding the bow against your chest or on a surface in front of you.

Step 13. Snip the yarn closely and aside from finishing off the ends of the tails you are have made a boutique bow.

Before you keep going try tying this bow many times over in different width ribbons to see the kinds of different effects you achieve. Also experiment with the size of the bow by increasing and decreasing the size of the loops to start to get a feel for bow size. Then, mount your bow on french clip or alligator clip.

Soil, Drainage, and Water

Having a beautiful and thriving yard isn’t an act of chance. Before you go shopping for trees, flowers, plants and shrubs, you should understand that half of them are meant to be underground. The root systems of your future plants and trees will decide if they live or die, and their future health is determined by the environment you will be planting them in. So, before you bring home a truck load of things to plant, you should take a good look at the soil and drainage conditions on your property to see if there is any room for improvement.

Soil is the foundation of plant life. Soil serves multiple purposes. It holds the structure upright, and it is also the source of food, water and air that roots need to live. To determine if your soil is healthy, and to learn what type of soil you have, you should squeeze it between your hands. If the soil forms a tight lump and keeps its shape, it is mainly composed of clay. If the soil does not create any shape, the soil is mostly sand. You are wanting soil to take a shape, then fall apart when the pressure is released. This is loam soil. Loam soil is a mixture of organic matter, plus large and small soil particles.

Clay soil will hold water very well. Clay soil holds water so well that it can kill. Clay soil is very dense. Air does not circulate properly in clay for plants and trees to grow well. Alternatively, sandy soil has an abundance of air circulation, however it will not hold water very well. Even if your soil experiment points to loam soil, you should take a sample to a lab to be tested. This soil sample will give you much insight on what you can do to enrich the growing soil in your flower beds and yard.

Soil testing will tell you about the pH, nutrient and organic levels in your soil. Most problems are easily rectified by adding an additive to the soil. Your soil may also benefit by having a conditioner such as manure, peat moss or sand added in to give it a better consistency. While this may seem time consuming, it is well worth it and the benefits of the labor can last for years.

Once you have your soil in proper condition, you will need to think about water. Most plants prefer soil that is evenly moist. This means that while the surface may be dry, it is generally moist underground. If you live in an area that is subject to droughts, you should only purchase trees, shrubs and other plant life that thrive in these growing conditions. However, even these plants should not be forgotten, and they will not appreciate being left to bake in the sun without a drink. You should consider installing an irrigation system for them.

Irrigation systems work well for most all growing regions. Irrigation systems help newly planted trees and shrubs get water while they still have immature root systems. Irrigation systems assure that your plants and trees are being watered at the roots, where it is most beneficial. Irrigation systems are also a great way to conserve water, as it is not wasted.

Next, do you have an area on your property that is prone to stand in water after a heavy rain? If so, your property may have poor drainage. Areas that stand in water generally tend to have soil which has a high clay content, as well. You can improve this matter by adding sand, or other organic matter, to the soil.

Standing water could be a result of a dip in the area, or shallow soil. If soil is shallow, roots are not allowed to properly extend downward and anchor. This would keep water from draining properly. The best thing you can do for dips or shallow soil is to install drainage tiles for a mature yard, and to plant new trees, bushes and plants in raised beds in these areas.

Now that you have learned about your soil, thought about a watering system and inspected your property for shallow soil or dips, you are ready to go to the plant nursery. Remember that all plants and trees have their own niche that they prefer to live in. Don’t buy plants which like shade if your yard does not provide any. Likewise, if you have an abundantly shady yard, don’t choose plants which need full sun.
