As a young woman who is already interested in social movements and gender studies, I've searched many of the ideas that Sandberg thought up in this book. However, I had never seen some of them pointed so directly and personally to a female's perspective. Sheryl Sandberg allowed her personal examples to give a real word connection to her ideas. I found myself nodding along in many of the early chapters where she discusses women's propensity to downplay their abilities, dismiss their accomplishments and avoid opportunities to advance out of fear.

She urges everyone to begin by being more honest about their personal life or feelings in the workplace, and true to her word she does this through the book herself. It's extremely refreshing to hear that a woman who is at the top has the same insecurities. Do not think this book is merely whining about gender bias or unfair workplace practices. These are highlighted briefly when appropriate to get the reader to examine how these affect job interviews, negotiations, teamwork and more. Sandberg goes beyond this with discussions of real solutions that have worked for her or other women. She explains what the pitfalls were, and provides steps that can help to overcome them.

I appreciate that Sandberg acknowledged, without placing shame, that women can add to the glass ceiling by also believing the stereotypes that others have about them. In some ways this does involve looking at how men react in certain ways or get treated and finding ways to mirror them. In others, she describes methods women can even use the stereotypes and gender bias to find the best approach to achieve their goals.

Some readers may be upset by women being told to walk this tightrope, but that anger should be directed at the system. Currently most women are already doing this, it's just their rope is a very short one because they feel there's no incentive to be more ambitious. If more of us, (who are legitimately interested), make progress in moving up in big companies, there will be more consideration of women in business and less need to conform. This will even open up opportunities for women who are motivated in other areas within upper management or corporate life.

In "Lean In" Sheryl Sandberg is simply providing the encouragement and suggestions to help you get where you want to be. This book is the most specific to women in business, but I really do believe that men and women can benefit from her insights no matter their personal aspirations. I suggest that you find your painting contractor on your own when living in the Chicago area. Do your own research instead of hiring that contractor referral service will help you. I'll elaborate why I feel this way soon.

I would advise that you call a friend or relative who has recently had the interior or the exterior of their home painted by a professional painter. You can ask them how they felt about their experience. If they liked their painting contractor, they will let you know. They'll also let you know if they did not. You should ask them how they felt about the painting company's quality, price and service. Was the contractor attentive to their needs or not? Just keep in mind that you¡¯re needs and wants will not be identical to your friend's or relative's. For example; was the painting contractor fully insured? Maybe your friend or relative did not care if they were or not. When I say fully insured, I do not just mean a "liability insurance policy" that anyone can get for sometimes just a few hundred bucks a year. But, do they carry "workers compensation insurance" as well? Well, if they have even one employee, they are required to by law.

Another way to find a painter is to do an online search, open up your local yellow page directory or respond to a flyer that was hung on your door. Call the painters for a free estimate. I usually suggest getting three estimates. If you get too many more than that, then you'll just drive yourself crazy.

If you decide to try to find a Chicago area painting contractor by using a painting contractor referral service, just remember one thing. Most of the "qualified, fully insured" painting contractors and many customers that I know, who have implied in these referral services have been disappointed and disillusioned with the results and have stopped using the contractor referral service altogether. So, what do you end up getting with a lead referral service? You may just get some of the "least qualified" contractors! Yes, you heard that right. And you thought that they were going to be the best, being screened for you and all! Caveat Emptor! Let the buyer beware!

Let me explain something. These contractor referral services claim to "screen" painting contractors. Yet, they seem to be "negligent at best" when it comes to screening for workers compensation insurance ", one of the most fundamental and basic areas that is of extreme importance to any professional, legitimate painting company and more importantly to you, the customer that is taking that the contractor referral service is "looking out for you." Read on, I'm much more cynical than that. it's more like "blatant disregard" for you, the customer. I truly believe, that the contractor referral services are banking on the fact that the average homeowner does not know the law; and then they use this to pull the wool over your eyes while basically implying to you the following. " and Mrs. Homeowner. We are looking out for you. We "pre-screened" these contractors for you! "I know. That does sound cynical of me does not it? But, why do the contractor referral services fail to screen for such a" basic "thing as workers compensation insurance?

In Illinois, it is law, that when a painting contractor hires employees and has them working on your home, that those employees be covered by workers compensation insurance, just in case a painter gets hurt or dies while painting the interior or exterior of your home . Guess what. Painters do get hurt on jobs and more often than you might think. And serious injury for painters is actually quite common. And did you know that your homeowner's insurance may not cover you if a painter gets hurt while painting your house.

In fairness to some of these contractors, if a painter is working for himself and by himself, he is not required to carry workers compensation insurance on himself, but once he has a worker on the job, it's a new ball game. Even if the owner of the painting company excludes itself from its policy, it must still provide the workers compensation for its employee. Now, he'll probably tell you that he's paying him "as a subcontractor". Well when someone gets hurt on the job, someone is going to still come looking for money from the workers compensation insurer. When they find out that there is no workers compensation insurance, then somebody is still going to pay. The painter that is promised will look to collect from whoever has the most money. I would bet that in most cases that means you, the homeowner.

If you do not think that anyone could possibly get hurt on just this one little job for you, then I suggest you do a little research online. Just do a Google search for "house painting fatalities" or "house painting injuries". It may shock you. People get hurt doing construction and home improvements all the time. You can even narrow down your search to the Chicago area. I do not want to scare you, but you must open your eyes and see the world in which you live. Many times an unethical painter or other tradesman will even "fake" an injury, looking to milk a situation for a long time. Please do not be naive enough to think that it will not happen to you because you are nice person. Nice people are the "easiest" for people with no scruples to take advantage of. It happens all the time.

Maybe one contractor referral exists that screens for it, but I have personally NEVER seen a contractor referral service in the Chicago area screen painters for workers compensation insurance. I've only seen them screen for liability insurance, lawsuits or judgments and a few other things. They seem to be more concerned with the following: Joe Dokes in Winnetka says ….. "Hank and his brother and law were such nice guys, not only did they do a nice job painting my living room, but they also walked my dog? "

I have come to the conclusion and it is just my opinion, that there is a reason why the contractor referral services do NOT screen painters for workers compensation insurance. They leave this "extremely" important screening for workers compensation insurance out of their "screening process" because if they actually did screen for this insurance, then they would lose about 90% of their revenue generating customers, which are the painting contractors that pay for your name. You are a hot lead. And the contractor referral service will sell your name, address and phone number to anywhere from 2 to 4, to maybe even more painters. They'll collect money from these contractors wherever you buy a paint job or not.

The reason the contractor referral service will NOT screen for workers compensation insurance is because over 90% of the painters that you attempt to hire from the referral service will not have this workers compensation insurance because it is too expensive, or they do not know that they are "required" to have their employees covered by it. I really do not blame the painters. These are men and women who are just out there in the world trying to make a buck to support their families. They may in fact be innocent. There are a lot of laws out there. They just need to be educated and if the contractor referral service "really" had the contractor's interest at heart, as well as you the homeowner, then they would tell the contractor that he should buy workers compensation insurance to make sure he passes the "screening "process and protects itself, its workers and its customers.

Therefore, what the lead referral services "actually" do is guarantee that you do NOT get the most qualified contractors bidding on your painting project. Instead you may even get the "least" qualified. This is not always the case. There are painting contractors in the Chicago area who are members of paint contractor referral services who do follow the law and carry the proper insurance. But, it's up to you to screen them, even if you hire them from a lead referral service who "claims" to have already qualified them. The lead referral service just will not do it because this would put them out of business because they would not be able to sell leads to enough contractors. Remember, the painters that are contacting you when you have a contractor referral service give your name out, are "paying for your name and job information".

Lead referral services typically charge the painting contractor anywhere from $ 25 to $ 200 for "leads" (your name and address and what work you need done). You are a "lead". Some charge much more than that and even take a percentage of the job from the contractor. While in theory, I feel that a contractor referral service is a good idea, in practice, I just have not seen it work because the contractor referral services are too greedy and want to charge 3 or 4 contractors for your name whether they are fully insured or not and whether you hire one of those contractors or not.

I was a member of several contractor referral services and had good ratings on most of them, however, after going on hundreds of appointments and spending thousands of dollars, I realized that I was bidding against contractors who were unqualified, yet winning the bids because of them prices were dirt cheap. But, the customer thought they were "screened". If you are looking for "cheap" and do not really care if your painters are complying with Illinois law, then you might find this with the contractor referral services. So it might not be a bad idea to use them if you need to keep your price way low, since so many contractors will be contacting you that are out to cut each others throat. A lot of them can do beautiful work too. I'm not questioning the quality of the work of any of these contractors.

I suggest that you find your painting contractor, on your own; online, from a friend or relative, yellow pages, mass mails, whatever. There are a lot of good contractors out there. This way, when you are getting your quotes, you can screen them yourself. You know the old saying, "if you want something done right …. then do it yourself". The thing for me that determinates professionalism in this industry is whether the painting contractor is "fully insured". Yep! I know …. they ALL say they are! It's almost laughable.

The best way to actually find out if a painter is legitimate in my opinion is to ask him for a certificate of "workers compensation insurance" as well as a certificate of "liability insurance". If he's fully insured then probably cares about the quality of his work, customer service and all of the other things that you would expect from a quality chicago area paint contractor. Ask him to have his agent send you a copy. Do not accept a copy of a policy from the contractor. Another quick and easy way to find out if a painting company is following Illinois law with respect to workers compensation is to call the Illinois Industrial Commission and simply give them the name of the contractor, his address and phone number. They will tell you right away whether that contractor who told you that he was fully insured, really is. The phone number for the Illinois Industrial Commission is 312-814-6611.

Shovels, Back-Hoes and EarthMovers – Which Are You Using in Your MLM?

There are three analogies I'd like to use in reference to how folks built, are building and will build their network marketing businesses. The shovel, the backhoe and the earthmover are what I will use as an example to illustrate my point.

I first started in the industry with Amway, a company that goes way back to the 1960's. Tremendous company with great values ​​and I learned a whole lot about this industry as an Amway distributer. Back then, people used the equivalent of a shovel to build their business. They met in living rooms and dens in homes across America to build their Internet Marketing businesses.

For nearly three decades folks grow their business through warm lists and just talking with people. There was no three way calling, no cell phones. no personal computers. That was networking in it's most primitive form, away from the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Towards the early 199o's people still used a shovel, but others moved to a backhoe. The internet had reached homes across America and a very small group of marketers were able to network online through email's and such. Networkers got together in hotel's rather than living rooms and dens. Hotels offered more space for more people and brave prospects a more professional image of the company that was represented. This worked for some, but for others it offered little credibility.

Do not get me wrong. Fortunes were made over the years in network marketing, however there was a very high failure rate. If you took the total number of people in Network marketing and the number of people making a full time living at it, the numbers were less than 1 / 100th of 1%. Not very good odds.

Fast Forward to the year 2009 and we use the equivalent of an Earth Mover. Serious Network Marketers today build their business online using state of the art tools like Auto-Responders, Funded Proposal Sales Funnel's, Affilate Joint Venture Partners, Social Media, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Videos, Podcasts, Email Marketing, Pay-Per Click Advertising, etc.

We no longer have to sell people on our products or services as our systems do the sifting, sorting and selling for us. We develop relationships with people online by providing them value. We give them the best of what we know for free to earn their trust. We use the auto-responders to keep in touch with our prospects over the course of time and give them the information they are looking for.

When I look back at the days I used to sit in Starbucks for hours upon hours showing the business plan to prospects that I had cold contacted, I almost have to laugh. I dragged people to hotel meetings who didnt want to be there, tried convincing people that if they did not get started in business with me, they were going to be broke for the rest of their lives. Those silly, outdated methods did not work so well

The bottom line folks is no matter what business your building, the rules are the same. Use systems to build your fortune. The days of doing list builders, cold contacting, hotel meetings, etc. are over. Sure there are companies that will continue to do business this way, however a VERY small percentage of people will have any kind of success in their Network Marketing business.

Old School Wisdom – Go Back in Time to Go Forward in Your Training!

The Stage Routine

This training system was popular with legendary Canadian strongman, Doug Hepburn, who was considered to be the strongest man in the world at his peak. It will help advanced trainees break through strength plateaus in a short period of time.

The routine involves only 2 exercises per workout and 2 stages per exercise for size and strength gains. Stage 1 will increase relative strength and Stage 2 will induce functional hypertrophy (i.e. muscle mass that produces high levels of strength).

A2) Standing V-Bar Pressdowns

Stage 1: 8 x 1 @ 50X0, 100″

Stage 2: 5 x 5 @ 40X0, 90″

Note: Start with a 3RM load for Stage 1 and a 7RM load for Stage 2.

I suggest that you use the first workout to find your true 3RM (repetition maximum) and 7RM loads, then commence the stage method the next workout. Only increase the weight when all reps for that stage have been successfully completed. The key is to be successful, so leave a little in reserve at the beginning.

Make sure to warm-up thoroughly by using several sets of low reps (5 or less) with progressively heavier loads until you reach your working weight.

This program will last a month. Each workout is performed once in a 5-day period (i.e. Day 1 – Day 2 – Off – Day 3 – Off) for 6 workouts then switch to a new routine. As mentioned above, the first workout is used to find the correct training weight. The next 4 workouts will incorporate the stage method – you should peak on the 5th workout with a new one-rep max on all lifts.

Taper on the final workout by performing only 3-5 sets of as many reps as possible at a 20X0 tempo resting 90 seconds between sets with the original 7RM load. You should notice an increase in number of repetitions performed at that weight. Most people will decay by 1-2 reps per set. Terminate the exercise if you hit 5 sets or drop 3 reps from one set to the next. This will be a short workout. Get in; do your thing; and get out. You may be tempted to do more. Don’t!

If you have been plagued with injuries and are apprehensive to perform maximum singles, stick to the 2-3RM range for Stage 1 and 5-7RM range for Stage 2. The program will work just as well.

Also, you’ll notice that all “A1” exercises are multi-joint movements and all “A2” exercises are single joint movements. Many people are concerned about maximum singles on isolation movements. Listen, either you lift the weight or you don’t, but if it’s still an issue, then substitute a compound movements instead:

Standing EZ-Bar Curls -> Close-Grip Chin-Ups

Lying Leg Curl -> Bent-Knee Deadlift or Snatch Podium Deadlift

Standing V-Bar Pressdowns -> Parallel-Bar Dips or Close-Grip Bench Press

Do not be fooled by the low number of exercises and the low number of repetitions. Many times, less is more and this routine is no exception! The high intensities used for a large number of sets produces great results. Rest assured that the whole body is trained – and trained hard – with this program.


The secret strength and muscle building system of the past and present!

This routine utilizes partial movements and static contractions to break through training plateaus. Partial movements are excellent to shock the system when stagnation occurs – they help to disinhibit the nervous system – and isometrics are great to gain strength at specific joint angles.

In the 1960’s, isometronics (a blend of isotonic and isometric contractions) were promoted as a new secret strength and muscle building system. A couple decades later in his book, The Development of Physical Strength, Anthony Ditillo declared that “isometronics can make you a superman!” Ditillo believed that combining heavy, intense muscular exertions and isometrics in a power rack was “the most potent tool available for increasing physical strength.”

The system is just as effective today as it was back then.

I picked up many of the details of this method in the mid 90’s from strength and conditioning coach, Charles Poliquin, who is a strong believer of using the power rack to promote rapid strength and mass gains. According to Poliquin, the average intermediate bodybuilder can expect to beat his personal records in the curl by 10-25 pounds, and in the close-grip bench press by 30-45 pounds in only 3-4 weeks with this system!

Let’s take a look at the routine.

Day 1 – Chest, Back and Shoulders

A1) 45 Degree Incline Barbell Bench Press

A2) Mid-Grip Pull-Ups

B1) Braced One-Arm Dumbbell Press (neutral grip)

B2) Kneeling One-Arm Pulldown (neutral grip)

Day 2 – Legs and Abdominals

A1) Back Squat

A2) Lying Leg Curls (dorsiflexed)

B1) Snatch-Grip Romanian Deadlift

B2) High-Pulley Crunch

Day 3 – Arms

A1) Close-Grip Bench Press

A2) Standing Mid-Grip Cable Curls

B1) One-Arm Dumbbell French Press

B2) 45 Degree Incline Dumbbell Curls

Isometronics involve lifting through a partial range of motion usually in a power rack (but not always), and finishing each rep with an isometric contraction. Take a third of the range of motion and do 3 sets at 3 different angles of an exercise for a total of 9 sets.

The order you perform the 3 ranges is important. Pick the heaviest (i.e. strongest) weight angle first:

a) Top -> Middle -> Bottom for Incline and Close-Grip Bench Press, and Squats

These exercises are performed in a power rack for 5 reps per set using a controlled tempo (i.e. 2 seconds to lower the bar, gently and quietly touching the lower pins, and two seconds to raise the bar). Then on the 5th rep, try to rip through the top rack pin for 6-8 seconds. Research from Germany shows that 8-second isometrics are enough. If you can make contact with the upper pin then the weight was too light. If you only have one set of pins in your power rack, then lower the bar just shy of resting on the pins and hold the 8-second isometric there. Make sure not to hold your breath during the isometric action. If you selected the proper load, you should not be able to do another concentric repetition.

b) Bottom -> Middle -> Top for Pull-Ups, Leg Curls, and Cable Curls

For these exercises, you perform 5 reps again using a controlled tempo (i.e. 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down), but this time on the 5th rep, pause for 8 seconds in the middle of the range.

The next workout for that body part will occur 5 days later and involve conventional training using hypertrophy parameters. Continue to alternate between isometronic and conventional workouts for six workouts as outlined below.

Workout #1, 3, 5 – Isometronic Training – A) 9 x 5 @ 2020, 120″ B) 3 x 8-10 @ 3010, 60″

Workout #2, 4 – Conventional Training – A) 5 x 5-7 @ 4020, 90″ B) 3 x 8-10 @ 3010, 60″

Workout #6 – Taper – A) 3 x 8-10 @ 2010, 120″ B) 2 x 12-15 @ 2010, 90″

This form of training will induce deep and severe soreness. It is a quick way to gain size as the isometrics create high tension for fast-twitch fibers leading to hypertrophy. This system is also excellent to boost strength and blast through sticking points, but do not use isometronics often in a training year as it is quite stressful to the nervous system.
