It's no secret to many golfers that the ability to visualize their golf shot in advance of actually hitting the ball is a necessary asset to playing the game to their full potential. But the ability to visualize does not come easy to everyone and for a good percentage of golfers, it is a skill that will take some time and effort to develop. And as the golf swing is a relatively complex physical movement, for those who find visualization challenging, the golf swing may not be the best place to start when it comes to developing this important skill. A better starting point for many is to pick a more simple movement and then work their way up to the golf swing once they've improved on their visualization skills.

One of the best movements I've found for golfers as a starting point for developing their visualization skills involves a rather obscure sport; the hammer throw. While some of you may not know this sport by name, if you've ever watched the Summer Olympics, you've probably seen the hammer throw. It's a rather simple sport, the object of which is to throw a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and handle. The competitor stands in a circle and then spins around several times before releasing the handle and launching the ball in a particular direction. The one who launches the ball the farthest is the winner.

There are a couple reasons why the hammer throw is often a good initial visualization exercise for golfers. First, it's a much simpler movement and more easy to visualize than a golf swing. Second, it involves holding something in your hands, swinging it in a circular motion and then releasing it; all movements that have some rather basic but still useful similarities to the golf swing. And third, while the hammer throw is a rather simple movement, it is complex enough to allow you to manipulate the movement in your imagination as a way of further developing your visualization skills.

So, let's take a moment now and give the hammer a try.

I want you to close your eyes and imagine yourself performing the spinning movement of the hammer throw. See yourself spinning around in a circle holding on to a handle with both hands that has a wire with a heavy metal ball attached to it; just as the hammer throwers do in the Olympics. The heavy metal ball should be in the air going around in a circle with you as you spin. Do not release the hammer for now, just see yourself spin around in a circle with it.

And, by the way, do not take the term "see yourself" too literally. The key here is to see, in your "minds eye", a person doing this movement. You do not have to visualize it in such detail that this person looks like you, though it is best to associate the person you see as "being you".

Alright, so give it a try now.

Okay, were you able to see yourself doing this?

What did it look like?

Are you spinning fast or slow?

Is the speed constant or is it changing?

Is the heavy metal ball spinning parallel to the ground or is the plane of the ball different or constantly changing?

Now, once you find yourself able to visualize this movement, see if you can make yourself spin slower … or faster.

And once you get this down, see if you can get yourself to spin in the opposite direction.

And then you may want to try the full hammer throw. Try to see yourself releasing the hammer at a point so that it flies in a particular direction.

Can you do this?

Can you get it to fly in the direction you want it to go?

If you've never tried anything like this before, you may be surprised at what you see. Some people may find it difficult to visualize much of anything at first, and will need to work a while on just seeing themselves spinning with the hammer.

Others will find they can see themselves spinning, but have a difficult time controlling the movement. They may find their imagination running wild with the image and see themselves spinning wildly out of control or in an odd manner or direction.

But if you're willing to take some time and play with this exercise, it can be a very useful tool in developing the skill necessary to utilize your mental energy to manipulate what you visualize and extremely to be able to picture and execute your perfect golf swing in your "mind's eye".

Have fun with it. Take a few minutes each day while you're sitting at your desk at work or lying in bed and just playing with it. See your self spinning with the hammer. Then try to slow down or speed up the rate of your spin. Or to change the direction of your spin or to throw the hammer in a particular direction. Or try to control the height and / or swing plane of the heavy metal ball as you spin.

And keep in mind that improving your abilities with your mental workouts is a lot like physical workouts. You do not just go into the gym on day one and start benching serious weight. You work yourself up to it. Same goes with mental workouts. Many of you will need to give this exercise some time before you are able to develop the mental control necessary to manipulate what you are seeing.

But I guarantee that if you can learn to manipulate this image of you throwing the hammer in your "mind's eye", you can use the same "mental energy" to learn to visualize a golf swing that is a replica of the swing you want to execute in physical reality.

The Glory of Roman Mosaics

The Romans were not the first to use tiles and small stone blocks to create designs and patterns to adorn the floors and walls of ancient buildings, such as temples and palaces. It had been done before, in both Greece and in the Ancient Near East – but the Romans can be said to have truly perfected the technique of mosaic making and developed it from a decorative craft into a magnificent art form. Roman mosaics were both attractive and long lasting and were eminently practical for a variety of architectural applications.

Around two thousand years ago the Romans developed a skill in making high quality cement mortar and concrete that was both structurally very strong and also waterproof. This technological innovation allowed for significant scope and flexibility in developing architectural forms and led to the widespread use of mosaic panels for enhancing the looks and utility of their buildings. To make their mosaics, they used tiny, squared off blocks of natural stone, marble or tiles, called tesserae, embedded in mortar and with the joints between them grouted up with cement, to provide extremely durable concrete floors, walls and arched roofs. Roman mosaic designs are very distinct and display worthy examples of both abstract and representative art. Although always immediately recognizable as Roman, many different style and themes are used. Black and white (dichromatic) highly stylized mosaic representations of dolphins and sea monsters adorned the floors of public baths, whilst in the seclusion of their villas, the rich favored more colorful realistic mosaic representations of gods, gladiators and gracious ladies at leisure. However a great deal of purely geometric mosaic decoration and bordering was used in repetitive patterns. There were also many mosaics of pastoral and culinary themes in somewhat random, but pleasing depictions, especially in dining rooms and reception areas.

It is wonderful that numbers of fine mosaic panels, many still in excellent condition, can be found all over the numerous territories that Rome once ruled – vivid reminders of a time when her mighty empire stretched from Britain in the West to Israel and Iraq in the East and from Germany in the North to Morocco and Egypt in the South. The extensive mosaic record of Rome that has been unearthed from all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East is a wonderful legacy. We are fortunate that so many fine examples of this unique art form can be viewed in numerous museum exhibitions and also insitu in a multitude of heritage sites. Concrete Floor Repair

There are many reasons a concrete floor would need repair such as:

  • cracks made by expansion and the contracting of the floor
  • damage caused by imperfections made before the concrete has cured
  • or floating objects such as wood that may have fallen into the concrete while it was still wet.

To start the concrete floor repair use a ruler to map out the area to be repaired. If the area is small and shallow then a small area repair may be the only thing required. On the other hand, if the area to be repaired is of a reasonable size than the whole concrete floor will have to chipped out. Make a rough surface for the cement to bond to it. Rough up a small area you may only need a hammer but if the area is larger than a jack hammer may be needed. Clean the area you have chipped of all the chipping debris in order for the concrete to have a good surface to exist too. The sand and cement mixture you will use to fill the area should have made up one part cement and two and a half parts of masonry sand. These dry materials should be mixed first.

Bring this dry mixture to a consistency of stiff plastic by using a polymer or latex bonding agent. Wet the area to be repaired with clean water without flooding it. The area should be damp in order for the mixture to bond. If the area is too dry the patch will crack. Apply it to the patch using a trowel leaving it slightly higher to accommodate for shrinking and allow it to dry. After about an hour use a harsher trowel to spread the paste that will rise to the top. This paste is what will make the finished surface. When all is thoroughly dry than use the trowel to scrape off anything that may have remained on the surface or may have spread to the surface nearby. Clean your tools thoroughly.

Muscle imbalance is common throughout the body in all people, not just gardeners. Because of strength and flexibility differences on either side of, or between front and back of the pelvis, you may be closer to a back or hip injury than you realize. This is especially true when you do heavy work in the garden, which challenges your muscles and joints.

When we dig in are in a modified lunge position. You may remember the lunge from high school Phy Ed or from yoga. Either way, when we dig, one foot is on the top of the spade and the other stays straight. The knee and hip joints of that front leg are bent and stay that way for an extended period of time. The back leg is straight. The pelvis supports both legs, no matter what they are doing.

Favoring one leg or the other while doing routine tasks often causes muscle imbalance in the pelvis. In other words, habitual digging in which you always grab the shovel with the same hand, and always stand and troubleshoot the same way, builds strength in some muscles as others grow weak and tight. So if you always put your right foot on the spade, your right quadriceps muscle may be stronger than your left. And depending on how you use your shovel, you may have stronger quads than hamstrings (muscles at the backs of the legs). This can lead to reduced hip flexibility and tight back muscles, as well as other body problems.

Muscles imbalance can over time lead to a loss of support for certain joints. And then, with just one stressful movement, WHAM! You get injured.

What to do?

The first thing to do is develop body awareness and core strength. We live in a time where there are many great holistic movement and body work practices to try. Yoga and Pilates develop core strength, balance and alignment. Feldenkrais helps you to unlearn habits and postures that tweak the joints. These are just a few mind-body techniques that can build the type of body alignment, strength and flexibility you need to sustain long hours in the garden.

Then, once you've become stronger in your trunk, pelvis and legs, think about switching sides every so often. If your left foot is usually the one on the spade, then try the digging action with your right foot and ground the left one behind you, for stabilization. A word of caution: start the side switching in small time increments. Do not be too demanding of your weak side at first. This can result in an injury. Just try it out, and let your muscles get used to working on the non-dominant side. Little by little you can increase the intensity and the length of time you work with your weak side.

Keep your lower back in an arched position and keep your chest pushed out and your head in a raised position looking forward. You will then want to begin to bend over and lift the weight. When you reach a full stance, you want to return to the original starting positions and move between the two situations.

Squatted Dumbbell Press
These are unique and effective! They work your legs, core, delts, back & arms. This particular exercise is underground in my opinion as I have only seen a grateful of athletes utilizing it without me telling them about it first. You're going to pick up a light to moderately heavy dumbbells and assume the squat position with your elbows fixed at your side and near a 90 angle. While maintaining the squat position during your movement and holding the dumbbells like hammers thrrust them up like you are popping a linen in the shoulder pads to get him off of you. These are gnarly.

Burpees
The burpee made the list because of the intensity and dynamic of the exercise even though 99% of the time you will do these without weights (weighted vest). This exercise covers almost your entire body and is also works great for cardio when incorporated into a HIIT workout.

Cleans

Plank Workout Routine to Flatten Your Abs

The plank workout routine is an exercise that targets primarily the core of your body, your abdominal area, and your back. Step 4 : Bring your knees down onto the floor, and bend your elbows forward, to allow your body to lay flat on the mat. At this point, you should return to your original starting position. Rest for about 30 seconds, and repeat the plank workout routine again, as many times as you can.

There are many other challenging plank workout routines that work your abdominal area much more intensely than the regular plank. One of these routines is the plank with leg raises.

Step 1: Same as directed in Step 1 above.

Step 2: Once your are in the plank position, raise your left leg and hold it for about a second or two. Bring it back down, and push it towards your stomach. While your go through this motion, make sure that your back remains flat, and that your other leg lasts fully extended. Repeat this movement 5 to 10 times, and then switch legs. Once you are finished, bring your knee back to the floor, and rest for 30 seconds. Repeat the plank routine again, as many times as you possibly can.
