Add A Bridge and Pond To Your Landscaping

There is no limit to the kinds of landscaping you can do in your backyard. You are limited only by your imagination.

If you have a large back yard, give some thought to installing a water garden, with a bridge crossing over it. Water gardens can provide such a soothing vista to the eye, and the bridge over it will add a charming touch.

It's quite possible for you to buy a bridge kit from home improvement stores, and even from the internet. Such companies as Garden Bridges offer a wide variety of bridges, constructed of wood or metal, depending on your preferences. These bridges vary in length from 4 feet upwards, and from bridges with no rails to one rail, to a rail on both sides, or simple rails of rope.http: //> Master Garden Products is another site that Offers a variety of bridges – to span masses of sand, or rock, or water.

For a bridge you need water for it to span

If you'd like to add a pond or water garden to your backyard, it's certainly possible for you to do it yourself. You'll have to make your plan carefully so that you can build it as efficiently as possible. The best thing to do is purchase a do-it-yourself kit which comes with all the materials you'll need, all specially shaped so that you will not have to bother yourself with that part of it. However, be aware that adding a pond is extremely labor intensive.

Clearwater Landscapes is a company that not only offers do-it-yourself pond kits, but also waterfalls! If a backyard pond is a great conversation piece, think of what the addition of a small waterfall would do. Pond Solutions is another company that offers a variety of design kits.

What to know before you start

Before you can start building your pond, you'll first have to check the electrical and city codes for your area to make sure you can build the pond that you want.

Then determine where you want your pond. You must give this a lot of thought, as once it's installed it would be extremely inconvenient to move. If you live in a location that gets very cold, or has lots of snow in winter, that will be a consideration as well. Because the water in a pond is always moving, thanks to the pump, it will probably never freeze … but it is important that you maintain the pump properly so that the worst does not happen.

It's only after you decide on the type of pond you'll have that you'll get the bridge to go over it!

But it's not necessary to have a water garden or pond in order to enjoy the look of a bridge. Japanese gardens, for example, quite often have a bamboo bridge simply leading right up to the edge of a rock garden. You'll want to surf the web to see all the possibilities, and then take it from there.

How to Replace a Power Window Regulator and Motor Assembly

When one of the power windows in your vehicle fails to function, it may be the result of a broken window regulator. If you have identified the motor as the issue, then replacing a power window motor is simple. We recommended that you review a service manual specific to the make and model of your vehicle when replacing the motor, as the methods used to disassemble car doors may vary from vehicle to vehicle.

The list of tools recommended to replace a power window regulator are as follows: Drilling tool and bits, painters tape, silicone spray, hex key magnetic, wrench, screwdriver, razor knife, white lithium grease, zip tie, magnet, plastic pry tool, socket wrench and sockets, gloves, and safety glasses.

We will review some general information before we get started on the installation directions. The first thing you will want to do is to ensure your working with a clean and dust free area. To begin, use silicone spray to clean the window run channels before installation. You'll want to use a plastic pry tool rather than a screwdriver to remove the door panel to prevent damage. To avoid damage surface of residue, use painters tape to affix the window. Last, use a magnetic wrench and screwdriver to loosen or tighten the screws, nuts, and bolts.

There are essentially eight steps to replace a window regulator and motor assembly:

  1. Remove door trim
  2. Disconnect wiring
  3. Release connecting hardware
  4. Disconnect harness plug
  5. Install new window regulator
  6. Reconnect power supply
  7. Attach the window glass
  8. Test the window

Let's go ahead and get started on the fitting. First, remove the interior door trim panel. Be sure to retain the hardware. Gently disconnect the wiring from the components inside the door. If a protective covering exists, remove it by hand when possible. Next, raise or lower the window glass to expose the hardware that connects the window regulator to the window glass. Then, release the connecting hardware, slide the glass up and affix the window in place. Next, disconnect the harness plug for the motor and release the screws to remove the window regulator assembly. Then, install the new window regulator assembly and secure the screws. Reconnect the power supply, raise or lower the window glass to expose the hardware. Attach the window glass in place with the hardware. And lastly, run the window up and down to verify the correct range of movement and operation.

Golf Hypnosis – Can You Throw the Hammer? – A Mental Primer For Golfers

It's no secret to many golfers that the ability to visualize their golf shot in advance of actually hitting the ball is a necessary asset to playing the game to their full potential. The great Jack Nicklaus once said, and I quote "I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without Golf Driver having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head".

But the ability to visualize does not come easy to everyone and for a good percentage of golfers, it is a skill that will take some time and effort to develop. And as the golf swing is a relatively complex physical movement, for those who find visualization challenging, the golf swing may not be the best place to start when it comes to developing this important skill. A better starting point for many is to pick a more simple movement and then work their way up to the golf swing once they've improved on their visualization skills.

One of the best movements I've found for golfers as a starting point for developing their visualization skills involves a rather obscure sport; the hammer throw. While some of you may not know this sport by name, if you've ever watched the Summer Olympics, you've probably seen the hammer throw. It's a rather simple sport, the object of which is to throw a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and handle. The competitor stands in a circle and then spins around several times before releasing the handle and launching the ball in a particular direction. The one who launches the ball the farthest is the winner.

There are a couple reasons why the hammer throw is often a good initial visualization exercise for golfers. First, it's a much simpler movement and more easy to visualize than a golf swing. Second, it involves holding something in your hands, swinging it in a circular motion and then releasing it; all movements that have some rather basic but still useful similarities to the golf swing. And third, while the hammer throw is a rather simple movement, it is complex enough to allow you to manipulate the movement in your imagination as a way of further developing your visualization skills.

So, let's take a moment now and give the hammer a try.

I want you to close your eyes and imagine yourself performing the spinning movement of the hammer throw. See yourself spinning around in a circle holding on to a handle with both hands that has a wire with a heavy metal ball attached to it; just as the hammer throwers do in the Olympics. The heavy metal ball should be in the air going around in a circle with you as you spin. Do not release the hammer for now, just see yourself spin around in a circle with it.

And, by the way, do not take the term "see yourself" too literally. The key here is to see, in your "minds eye", a person doing this movement. You do not have to visualize it in such detail that this person looks like you, though it is best to associate the person you see as "being you".

Alright, so give it a try now.

Okay, were you able to see yourself doing this?

What did it look like?

Are you spinning fast or slow?

Is the speed constant or is it changing?

Is the heavy metal ball spinning parallel to the ground or is the plane of the ball different or constantly changing?

Now, once you find yourself able to visualize this movement, see if you can make yourself spin slower … or faster.

And once you get this down, see if you can get yourself to spin in the opposite direction.

And then you may want to try the full hammer throw. Try to see yourself releasing the hammer at a point so that it flies in a particular direction.

Can you do this?

Can you get it to fly in the direction you want it to go?

If you've never tried anything like this before, you may be surprised at what you see. Some people may find it difficult to visualize much of anything at first, and will need to work a while on just seeing themselves spinning with the hammer.

Others will find they can see themselves spinning, but have a difficult time controlling the movement. They may find their imagination running wild with the image and see themselves spinning wildly out of control or in an odd manner or direction.

But if you're willing to take some time and play with this exercise, it can be a very useful tool in developing the skill necessary to utilize your mental energy to manipulate what you visualize and extremely to be able to picture and execute your perfect golf swing in your "mind's eye".

Have fun with it. Take a few minutes each day while you're sitting at your desk at work or lying in bed and just playing with it. See your self spinning with the hammer. Then try to slow down or speed up the rate of your spin. Or to change the direction of your spin or to throw the hammer in a particular direction. Or try to control the height and / or swing plane of the heavy metal ball as you spin.

And keep in mind that improving your abilities with your mental workouts is a lot like physical workouts. You do not just go into the gym on day one and start benching serious weight. You work yourself up to it. Same goes with mental workouts. Many of you will need to give this exercise some time before you are able to develop the mental control necessary to manipulate what you are seeing.

But I guarantee that if you can learn to manipulate this image of you throwing the hammer in your "mind's eye", you can use the same "mental energy" to learn to visualize a golf swing that is a replica of the swing you want to execute in physical reality.

And if you do not think that's important, just ask Jack Nicklaus.

The Glory of Roman Mosaics

The Romans were not the first to use tiles and small stone blocks to create designs and patterns to adorn the floors and walls of ancient buildings, such as temples and palaces. It had been done before, in both Greece and in the Ancient Near East – but the Romans can be said to have truly perfected the technique of mosaic making and developed it from a decorative craft into a magnificent art form. Roman mosaics were both attractive and long lasting and were eminently practical for a variety of architectural applications.

Around two thousand years ago the Romans developed a skill in making high quality cement mortar and concrete that was both structurally very strong and also waterproof. This technological innovation allowed for significant scope and flexibility in developing architectural forms and led to the widespread use of mosaic panels for enhancing the looks and utility of their buildings. To make their mosaics, they used tiny, squared off blocks of natural stone, marble or tiles, called tesserae, embedded in mortar and with the joints between them grouted up with cement, to provide extremely durable concrete floors, walls and arched roofs. Beside being attractive, correctly laid mosaic tiles rendered floors waterproof, hygienic, easy to clean and equally importantly, also reflected light – essential properties for public buildings such as the baths of a people obsessed with bathing. But hand in hand with advances in technique and innovative applications of practical utility, so also went the development of a tradition of artistic excellence. We have many splendid examples of both abstract and representative Roman mosaic art that is really outstanding by any standard.

Roman mosaic designs are very distinct and display worthy examples of both abstract and representative art. Although always immediately recognizable as Roman, many different style and themes are used. Black and white (dichromatic) highly stylized mosaic representations of dolphins and sea monsters adorned the floors of public baths, whilst in the seclusion of their villas, the rich favored more colorful realistic mosaic representations of gods, gladiators and gracious ladies at leisure. However a great deal of purely geometric mosaic decoration and bordering was used in repetitive patterns. There were also many mosaics of pastoral and culinary themes in somewhat random, but pleasing depictions, especially in dining rooms and reception areas.

It is wonderful that numbers of fine mosaic panels, many still in excellent condition, can be found all over the numerous territories that Rome once ruled – vivid reminders of a time when her mighty empire stretched from Britain in the West to Israel and Iraq in the East and from Germany in the North to Morocco and Egypt in the South. The extensive mosaic record of Rome that has been unearthed from all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East is a wonderful legacy. We are fortunate that so many fine examples of this unique art form can be viewed in numerous museum exhibitions and also insitu in a multitude of heritage sites. Many of these distinctively Roman works look as though they were laid out only yesterday – their magnificence undiminished after the passage of twenty or so centuries. This is indeed a lasting tribute, both to the durability of the medium and also to the fine craftmanship of the original Roman mosaic artists.

You can find other aspects of the history of mosaics at the web page "Roman Mosaics" .

Concrete Floor Repair

There are many reasons a concrete floor would need repair such as:

  • cracks made by expansion and the contracting of the floor
  • damage caused by imperfections made before the concrete has cured
  • or floating objects such as wood that may have fallen into the concrete while it was still wet.

Whatever caused the concrete floor repair must be done.

To start the concrete floor repair use a ruler to map out the area to be repaired. If the area is small and shallow then a small area repair may be the only thing required. On the other hand, if the area to be repaired is of a reasonable size than the whole concrete floor will have to chipped out. Make a rough surface for the cement to bond to it. Rough up a small area you may only need a hammer but if the area is larger than a jack hammer may be needed. Clean the area you have chipped of all the chipping debris in order for the concrete to have a good surface to exist too. The sand and cement mixture you will use to fill the area should have made up one part cement and two and a half parts of masonry sand. These dry materials should be mixed first.

Bring this dry mixture to a consistency of stiff plastic by using a polymer or latex bonding agent. Wet the area to be repaired with clean water without flooding it. The area should be damp in order for the mixture to bond. If the area is too dry the patch will crack. Apply it to the patch using a trowel leaving it slightly higher to accommodate for shrinking and allow it to dry. After about an hour use a harsher trowel to spread the paste that will rise to the top. This paste is what will make the finished surface. When all is thoroughly dry than use the trowel to scrape off anything that may have remained on the surface or may have spread to the surface nearby. Clean your tools thoroughly.

A Great House Painter

No one looks forward to painting their home, but everyone loves the look when it is freshly painted. The pitfalls and headaches often associated with painting a home are avoidable – or at least kept to a minimum – by selecting the right painting company.

The first step in a worry-free painting project is selecting a company. If you have never painted a home before, consider yourself lucky. The intensive effort necessary to paint a house on your own is not an experience that belongs to a bucket list. The money you might save by painting your own home will be lost in hair restoration products and anger management courses.

Once you have come to your senses and started looking for a professional painting contractor, there are some qualities that separate the men from the boys in this industry.

Perhaps more important to a painting contractor than paint brushes, insurance is a must-have for anyone doing work on your property. A legitimate paint contractor will carry, at minimum, a general liability policy. The purpose of this policy is to protect you and the contractor from any damages or injuries that could occur while the project is underway. Should one of the painters fall from a ladder, the lawsuit could be pointed at the homeowner if the contractor is not covered for this liability. Walk away quickly from any contractor who does not have some form of insurance.

If a painting company does not have a clear reputation available online or through references provided by the contractor, it is typically for one of two reasons: one, this is their first project, or two, they do not want you to speak to previous customers. Either one of these possibilities is reason enough to look elsewhere. A reputable painter will gladly supply references, as there are a few sales tools that are as effective as a glowing referral.

A painting contractor that can not arrive for an estimate on time is not likely to take punctuality very seriously during the project either. When someone is legally deferred for reasons outside of their control like traffic, alien abduction, etc … they will have the foresight and courtesy to call to explain the delay and provide a new estimated time of arrival. A painting contractor that is not punctual is not likely to complete a project in a reasonable amount of time either.

Aside from the protection of insurance as mentioned above, it is important to know who will be on your property. A fair question to ask is if the painters are employed by the painting contractor, or sub-contracted to do the work. Sub-contracted labor is less likely to have undergone a background check and is therefore a potential risk factor. There are exceptions, of course, and it is usually best for a homeowner to rely on instincts when assessing character.

Yes, for most of us price does matter. The painting contractor with the highest price is not necessarily the best, and the one with the lowest price may end up costing double if the quality is so poor it has to be done again. When evaluating references provided by contractors, there is nothing wrong with asking the other homeowners how they felt about the price. Many will volunteer what they paid right away and provide a great point of reference to be sure and secure a fair bid.

Candle Chandeliers: Real Candles and Imitation Candles

People opt for candle chandeliers primarily because of its antique look and the mixture charm it brings into the whole room when the flame plays and shadows are cast on walls; extremely creating the perfect backdrop to an intimate evening. These lighting fixtures are used as an integral part of the room's decor and are suitable for a multitude of different themes and styles of the rooms.

The traditional candle chandeliers make use of real candles which can make it difficult to maintain as most chandeliers do not have an extensive surface to catch wax drippings, unless you have a pillar chandelier, which usually has a large surface or shelf to set pillar candles on. Using real candles does not require extra wiring or circuitry that could power up your electric bill. Real candles are often preferred by traditional folks who like seeing soft, flickering glows against their walls.

They are often placed not too high since real candles may scorch the room's ceiling. Sometimes, the candles are put in decorated jars to contain the wax drippings and also serve as shades. These fixtures come in a range of styles, and can add a more refined look to a candle chandelier. There are those that come with antique glass fixtures for a more dramatic and vintage look.

Most candle chandeliers that can be bought in home depots, furniture stores, and even the Internet offer versatile styling that coordinates with most home decor. These usually come with at least 4 pillar candle-style lights. They can be of varying heights for a more contemporary look, and sit on a hand-worked wrought iron circle base.

There are now some that have been modified to eliminate the use of real candles which can be a fire hazard. Imitation candles are actually tiny candelabra light bulbs that may come in both low and high wattage's to create an illusion of real candle flame.

These are candle chandeliers that feature thick glass diffusers that look remarkably like candles. There are also different shapes and styles of imitation candles, and you can get different wattage's as well, resulting in everything from a soft glow to a blazing, gorgeous focal point. This kind of candle chandeliers can hold as much as twenty 60-watt bulbs and normally hangs at a weight of more or less 50 pounds.

Although it features fake candles, this kind of chandelier continues to be popular for its timeless design with a traditional candle look.

Avoid Spring Digging Injuries in the Garden

With spring comes the urge to plant. And that means digging. Are you aware of what digging does to your risk for injury?

By nature, we humans are creatures of habit. So if we dig planting holes with the left leg on the spade and the right leg in back, chances are we always dig in that configuration. Over time, this creates imbalanced muscle groups through the legs, pelvis, trunk and even shoulders and arms.

Muscle imbalance is common throughout the body in all people, not just gardeners. Because of strength and flexibility differences on either side of, or between front and back of the pelvis, you may be closer to a back or hip injury than you realize. This is especially true when you do heavy work in the garden, which challenges your muscles and joints.

When we dig in are in a modified lunge position. You may remember the lunge from high school Phy Ed or from yoga. Either way, when we dig, one foot is on the top of the spade and the other stays straight. The knee and hip joints of that front leg are bent and stay that way for an extended period of time. The back leg is straight. The pelvis supports both legs, no matter what they are doing.

Favoring one leg or the other while doing routine tasks often causes muscle imbalance in the pelvis. In other words, habitual digging in which you always grab the shovel with the same hand, and always stand and troubleshoot the same way, builds strength in some muscles as others grow weak and tight. So if you always put your right foot on the spade, your right quadriceps muscle may be stronger than your left. And depending on how you use your shovel, you may have stronger quads than hamstrings (muscles at the backs of the legs). This can lead to reduced hip flexibility and tight back muscles, as well as other body problems.

Muscles imbalance can over time lead to a loss of support for certain joints. And then, with just one stressful movement, WHAM! You get injured.

What to do?

The first thing to do is develop body awareness and core strength. We live in a time where there are many great holistic movement and body work practices to try. Yoga and Pilates develop core strength, balance and alignment. Feldenkrais helps you to unlearn habits and postures that tweak the joints. These are just a few mind-body techniques that can build the type of body alignment, strength and flexibility you need to sustain long hours in the garden.

Then, once you've become stronger in your trunk, pelvis and legs, think about switching sides every so often. If your left foot is usually the one on the spade, then try the digging action with your right foot and ground the left one behind you, for stabilization. A word of caution: start the side switching in small time increments. Do not be too demanding of your weak side at first. This can result in an injury. Just try it out, and let your muscles get used to working on the non-dominant side. Little by little you can increase the intensity and the length of time you work with your weak side.

The Ups and Downs of Folding Snow Shovels

You might be considering a new snow shovel. Maybe you should take a look at folding snow shovels and explore your options?

The ups

It will not cost you much more than any other low-end shovel. They are priced as low as ten dollars and many are fifteen dollars. There are however, more expensive ones, depending on your taste.

You never know what conditions you may run into inclement weather. Having a snow shovel at your immediate disposal may be invaluable. You can take it with you when you travel. Many times, your old shovel will just not fit. Also, it may take up more space than you can afford.

If you go camping often, you know that a shovel is a handy tool to have. When traveling, space is at a premium. This shovel fits into a small area. That leaves room for something else that you need. Suppose you are out in your snowmobile. There will be times when a shovel can be a very important tool. If you have a snow shovel in your car, you may avoid being stranded sometimes.

You may find yourself hiking someday. How are you going to get through that blocked path? If you have a shovel, you can use it to clear the way. There is a multitude of uses for a space saving shovel. What are you going to do with all of those leaves or grass trimmings? You may consider scooping them up and getting rid of them.

There is always a need for an extra snow shovel in wintertime. You may not have shovel that walkway alone, if there are enough tools to go around.

The downs

Sometimes take apart tools are not as strong as solid one. Durability may be an issue. Consider how much usage the tool will receive. If it is only for emergencies or part time, it may work fine. If you have harsh winters and need something reliable, you may want to look elsewhere.

It may not be for everyone. You may decide that space is not an issue. In that case, a normal snow shovel will do.

You may not be able to buy this shovel in the usual places. There are however, many online sellers to purchase them from. As with those types of orders, there is always a delay for processing and shipping. If you need the item today, you may not be able to get it.

Folding snow shovels can save you a great deal of space and help keep things organized. They are relatively inexpensive. There may be a durability issue if they are to be used often. Their compact design makes them perfect for emergency use.

A Selection of the Best Muscle Building Exercises

As a fitness professional I frequently receive questions like "how can I get big fast?" or "what are the best muscle building exercises?" When you head out to the gym, the types of muscle building exercises you do are going to have a dramatic impact on the results you get. What you will find is that there are all kinds of equipment out there and they can produce some decent results. However, you will need to work all the muscles in your body to get a solid muscular frame and that means ensuring you are at a minimum doing these exercises. It can be a good idea for you to rotate between these exercises in your routine to not overexert any particular muscle group.

A Selection of the Best Muscle Building Exercises

The most essential muscle building exercises for your legs will include the squat. With this exercise, you need to ensure that you are doing it properly. Imagine you are sitting down in a chair to help get an idea of how this should look and practice this movement a few times before you add in the use of weights. You will find this maximizes the results you have.

Bench Pressing
If your form is proper on this exercise, you are going to find that it will help to build up your chest and triceps. When not handled properly, you will only work part of your muscles and have some pretty unven results. The goal here is to push the weight up off your chest to help build the muscles with your back pressed on the bench and avoiding raising your butt from the edge of it or arching your back.

For this exercise to work, you will need to ensure that you are pumping your muscles as you work the weights. Get into a stance that has your feet wide and your arms inside of your knees and keep to your form. Then you will want to lift with a single movement without jerking or kicking your ass out to lift the weight and then lower slowly.

Straight Leg Deadlifts
You'll notice that this is one of those muscle building exercises that will mirror some of the others. When you have your legs straight for this, you will work your hamstring and workout several other muscles that are not touched in the other form of deadlifts. This does increase the difficulty of the lift but when performed safely it's worth it.

Keep your lower back in an arched position and keep your chest pushed out and your head in a raised position looking forward. You will then want to begin to bend over and lift the weight. When you reach a full stance, you want to return to the original starting positions and move between the two situations.

Squatted Dumbbell Press
These are unique and effective! They work your legs, core, delts, back & arms. This particular exercise is underground in my opinion as I have only seen a grateful of athletes utilizing it without me telling them about it first. You're going to pick up a light to moderately heavy dumbbells and assume the squat position with your elbows fixed at your side and near a 90 angle. While maintaining the squat position during your movement and holding the dumbbells like hammers thrrust them up like you are popping a linen in the shoulder pads to get him off of you. These are gnarly.

The burpee made the list because of the intensity and dynamic of the exercise even though 99% of the time you will do these without weights (weighted vest). This exercise covers almost your entire body and is also works great for cardio when incorporated into a HIIT workout.

Cleans are no joke. I've heard a couple of knuckle heads over the years claim that the clean is overrated, but that claim is simply not true. Cleans are great for building explosive power, a core of steel and big bulging delts. Be sure to perform this exercise with great form as you do not want any back injuries inhibiting your fitness progress.

Alright insiders, that's it for this one. Be sure to incorporate these muscle building workouts into your routine in order to maximize your results. As always I appreciate all of your feedback.

Train hard!

Antique Silverplate and Sterling Silverware – A Rewarding Collectible

As a collector, one of the first and important decisions is wherever to focus your efforts to collecting silver plate or sterling silver antiques.

Historically, collecting and using sterling silverware and flatware was a symbol of wealth and social status in England, America and Europe. However, with the advent of electroplating technology during 1800s, by inventors such as: Luigi Brugnatelli (1805); John Wright (1845); The Elkingtons (1840), the use and collection of silverware became more accessible to the broader community. As a result of electroplating technology, silver plate silverware and flatware is a more common find for the antique collector in contemporary times.

When browsing or researching antique silver plate or sterling tableware, look for a 'hallmark' that will provide information about the manufacture or designer and the origin location. This is important as a way of authentication as a genuine silver plate or sterling silver item.
