Teenagers – Inside the Teenage Brain

Recent research on the human brain provides parents with shocking new evidence to possibly explain the sometimes irrational, illogical and impulsive behavior of teenagers. Even though the brain is almost physically mature, the grey matter in the thinking part of the brain (pre-frontal cortex) is still making connections. So teenagers are left with most of the information reaching their brains being processed in the emotional part (limbic system).

Information processed in the limbic system, without benefit of higher level processing in the pre-frontal cortex, may result in impulsive, egocentric, and maybe even risky, behavior. Because of this ongoing construction in the thinking part of the brain, a teenager is, many times, not capable of fully processing information that is necessary to make responsible decisions. Combine this brain challenge with a teen’s temperament, maturity level, developmental stage and environmental impact, and it begins to become understandable why parents may find this time so exhausting and frustrating.

Realizing that major construction is going on inside the pre-frontal cortex of the teenage brain does not excuse inappropriate or irresponsible behavior from the teen. But understanding the teenage brain is crucial to figuring out how to interact with it. For the teenager, this time in his or her life can be a creative and emotional roller coaster ride with plenty of thrills and chills (and maybe some spills), but for parents it can be just nerve-wracking and terrifying. Healthy communication and effective discipline are what a teenager needs to help navigate this important time, especially since the brain is not yet necessarily ready or able to face all of the inevitable challenges, without support.

Each interaction with a teenager will affect development of his or her brain, helping the teen make connections in the pre-frontal cortex. During this time of heavy construction, the teenage brain needs focused and intentional support and teaching to help form and solidify these hopefully healthy connections. Garden Driveway Lights – Set the Stage For Your Visitors

Garden lights enhance any home, and why would not you want to do that? As the first impression viewers get your your home is the driveway and frontage, it looks logical to kick off your landscape lighting by installing garden driveway lights. We all cherish our homes; in the major cases that they are the fruits of years of hard labor, both in terms of earning the cash needed for its upkeep and the work involved in keeping it looking good. But keeping your home looking good can be fun as well as hard work, especially when it comes to illuminating that public facade, the driveway.

One good tip is to think of your home as a stage; a stage where you and your family act out the multitude of experience that go into making up a life. All stages are illuminated. When thinking about your own stage lighting, do not just think in terms of separate areas to be lit, instead think of your home and its surroundings as a cohesive whole; by doing a whole world of special effects is opened up to you.

If you want your home to give the impression of traditional solidarity, then Victorian style lampposts will probably play a part in your lighting design. For a dramatic scene, use directional ground lights to highlight trees and architecture. Brick Stains – Efflorescence (White Powder)

If you own a brick home and have a white powdery substance on some of your brick, block or stone then you have what is called in the trade, efflorescence.

Is it a problem? Well it can be. Is it serious? Well it can be but not usually. Can I fix the cause of this problem? Yes you can but first let’s try to define what this substance is and then offer some solutions on how to prevent its’ occurrence.

Efflorescence is a white power that when visible on the surface of brick, block or stone masonry is an indication of excessive water within the masonry structure.

It often occurs when flashing, cap stones, rowlocks, chimney crowns, etc. leak allowing rain water to enter the masonry wall system. Once the water is inside the wall it will dissolve soluble salts within the individual masonry units and the mortar.

As the water migrates to the outside surface of the masonry wall by wicking action it carries these soluble salts with it and then deposits them on the surface of the masonry during evaporation. This is a sure sign of excessive water infiltration into the masonry and if not taken care of, can lead to costly damage with premature deterioration.

Solution: As with any water problem you must stop the water from entering the wall system at the source. Flashing joints must be checked periodically as well as mortar joints on cap stones and rowlocks and cracks repaired on chimney crowns. Once the leak has been repaired, wait for a few weeks of high pressure weather to arrive which will dry out the wall system.

Many times rain or a simple hosing will wash the efflorescence off, if it is minor. Usually though, further steps are needed to remove the stain completely. You may remove the efflorescence by using a stiff brush to scrub the masonry surface while applying a mild diluted acid such as muriatic acid. It may take more than one scrubbing and application. Be certain to flush liberally anything that has come in contact with the acid to assure that it has been sufficiently diluted including the roof, masonry, siding or ground.

If your effort was not effective then there may be other issues that need to be addressed by a professional masonry repair expert. Contact your local repair expert, explain the steps you have taken and ask for advice on what should be done next.

DIY Solar – Soldering Solar Cells

If you are building "solar panels for your home", one of the most important things to learn is proper soldering of the solar cells. Building your own solar power system can be a very fun project, but if you are having trouble soldering your solar cells then stop right now! When I first started by first attempt to solder, I failed. I thought to my self, "what am I doing wrong", then I discovered the secret to soldering solar cells. Follow the instructions below for perfectly acceptable soldering techniques.

  1. Cells I use – To start this mini-training series, you need to determine what type of solar cells to use. My own personal preference is the 3 x 6 inch cells that are rated at.5 volts each. I found that these are easier to solder and work with.
  2. Soldering iron – This is one of the trade secrets of the pros, a proper soldering iron. I have found experimenting with different soldering irons and different wattage of heat the best solutions is to use a 40 watt iron. Buy a good heavy-duty iron, I suggest a soldering station with a wipe sponge to keep your tip clean at all times. The tip I prefer has a slight angle to it and can be easily replaced. To not use any tip wider than 1/8 th inch.
  3. Solder to use – This is a very important step in soldering solar cells, the proper solder. There are so many different solders on the market that your head will start to spin wondering which one to use. My rule here, KIS (keep it simple). Any electronics supply will carry solder made for electronics projects that will have a low melting point. This is brutal when soldering our cells.
  4. Soldering flux – It is important that when doing a DIY solar project that you use proper flux. The purpose of soldering flux is to condition the metal that we are attaching to, so that the solder will draw or easily attach. Use liquid flux available in pens designed for electronics.
  5. Heat sink – Here is one of the best steps to follow if you want perfect solder connections. If you want to have consistent soldered connections, then I would recommend using a piece of tempered glass. When I build all my solar cells I use inch inch tempered glass. I build all my cells by encapsulating them on the glass, so this works great for soldering them also.

First thing you must do is plug your soldering iron in and let it come to the proper heat temperature. Next, prepare your tip for use by applying solder to it and see if it melts easily. The first time you use your iron you must clean your tip by applying solder then pulling it through your wet sponge, this will coat your tip with a glaze of solder. Now you are ready to get started.

I start by making sure my glass is perfectly clean by using some type of glass cleaner. Now take one of your cells face up or the side that faces the sun, this is your negative side when hooking them up. Having already cut your tab wires to the proper length we can start to sold them to the cell.

Apply flux to the two silver strips on the solar cell. Here is a little trick to help make your soldering easier. Use sockets from a socket wrench set to hold down your cell while applying solder; This keeps it in place while preventing warping of the cell. Next, lay your tab wire flat against the silver strip and hold in place using a small flat tip screw driver. Apply a small amount of solder to your soldering iron; this will be all you need since the factory tab wires are already covered with solder. Now draw your soldering tip across the tab wire, you will get the proper feel for this as the solder melts as you move the iron along the solar cell. Keep doing this until you have enough cells to do one complete panel.

After soldering all your negative sides of your cells you are ready to start joining your cells together making your stringers of cells. Turn over one of the recently soldered solar cells then take another one and slide under the tab wires and dab each of the 6 silver solder points with flux, and attach the same way using solder for each of the solder points. Guess what, you have properly soldered your first solar cells!

What is great about this method is that you are already ahead of most people who do not know the proper way to sold solar cells. Just remember, just the right amount and do not leave the heat on to long or you will warp your cell and possibly damaged it.

Explaining the "Hungerstat" – Read This Before Considering a Gastric Bypass

When I have an obese patient in their 300 pound state, many times they come to me for advice and to clear them for gastric bypass surgery. Some insurers require these patients to undergo 6 months worth of diet and psychological counseling before undergoing the surgery, some just require that they have a primary care doctor like me to look after them around the perioperative period (the time surrounding the surgery) because of all of the complications involved with a risky surgery. I am usually the person who says whether it is safe to move forward with surgery.

However with my obese patients I hate giving this clearance because I have seen so many of my patients end up with complications… including death. I had one patient die from sepsis after the surgery. One patient ended up going the opposite direction from obesity and became bulemic. One patient constantly gets transfusions due to iron deficiency anemia and yet another has b12 deficiency because the part of the stomach that absorbs vitamin b12 is blocked from absorbing now. And I have countless patients who lost weight… only to gain it back. For every successful patient after the gastric bypass, I have 8-9 other patients who have had major complications that will go on for the rest of their lives because of the permanent change made to their stomach.

But I am having less and less patients experiencing these issues, yet STILL having the weight loss similar to the gastric bypass. The reason is because of my new understanding of the “Hungerstat,” the thermostat for hunger in our bodies. I give my patients an alternative weight loss method that is free and does not require surgery and most of them have avoided bypass with this system of weight loss. Let me explain the hungerstat before I get to this diet.

The hungerstat is in all of us and is controllable. Our satiety levels can be forcefully changed by surgery and gastric bypass. That’s a given or else we wouldn’t give our most unhealthy patients such a dangerous option for treatment. However Alwin Lewis, M.D., M.P.H. and I have been using our bodies’ natural hungerstat control system to divert our patients away from gastric bypass to allow them to lose weight at the same rate WITHOUT SURGERY.

How do we do this? We use our bodies’ natural system for losing weight and maintaining health. When we were hunter-gatherers before the ice age, when famines or winters came along and food was scarce to hunt or gather, our bodies would get hungry… for 3 days. After 3 days, the hunger goes away because the body goes into catabolic mode: a mode that allows it to burn fat. When you eat 10 or less bites of food per day, this mode is automatically turned on after 3 days.

So to be specific, if you eat five bites twice a day, after 3 days of hunger, and tiredness, your body turns off the feeling of hunger and is satisfied with minimal food! The body becomes satisfied because it starts burning fat to keep you alive. It’s how we were designed. Your hunger thermostat, or hungerstat, tells the body to not feel hungry anymore.

Let’s look at kids in those poorer countries, in those commercials asking you to sponsor them for a few bucks a day. When you see them, they are sleeping. Even though they are malnourished, believe it or not, they are not feeling hunger. They look terrible, don’t get me wrong, to be in that situation. But nature was nice enough to design us to not feel that hunger after 3 days so we don’t have to suffer. Those kids are using their fat reserves to survive and their hungerstats are fully turned off.

So the amazing thing is if you eat five bites twice a day only, in 3 days you will feel absolutely no hunger. You will feel just like you had a gastric bypass.

However here is the second amazing thing. After 14 days of easily taking in only 5 bites twice a day, the stomach naturally shrinks down. In other words, after 14 days of eating only 5 bites twice a day, the stomach shrinks to a point where eating more than 5 bites makes you feel drastically full. Your thermostat for hunger goes down to a point where it feels satisfied with smaller amounts of food. Your portion sizes, from that point forward, are naturally controlled as if your stomach had gone through a gastric bypass. My patients that are on this diet end up having portion control for the rest of their lives because they have naturally controlled their hungerstat so they no longer feel the need to go to the buffet with a full plate for 3 visits, they no longer overeat, and they no longer have the capacity in their stomachs to overeat (unless they blow it all and eat huge amounts of food and overstretch their newly-shrunken stomach’s capacity).

If you’ve ever seen a friend after surgery, many a time their appetites just won’t allow them to eat more than a few bites off their plates. Hospitals constantly have people with full plates on the table even though the surgeon has given the person the OK to eat as much as they want. But many people just can’t get their appetites back up after a few days of not eating due to abdominal surgery or abdominal conditions. These people are having the same exact effects on their hungerstat. So the question is… is it really the gastric bypass helping people lose weight, or the post-surgical period creating a lower hungerstat?

So with a drastic portion reduction and only eating 5 bites twice a day, in 3 days you feel no hunger, and in 14 days you feel like you are satisfied after only 5 bites. Sounds like a person who has had a gastric bypass doesn’t it? But instead, you are using your body’s natural hungerstat to make the same exact changes.

After a gastric bypass, you end up eating 3 bites 3 times a day. When my patients come to me for pre-operative counseling, I put them on Dr. Alwin Lewis’s “Five bite diet” and they lose the same amount of weight, have the same effects on their hunger, and avoid the surgery altogether. While on this diet, they lose 1 pound a day. And best of all, the diet costs NOTHING. You save from the surgical costs, and the costs to your body as you avoid life-threatening surgery.

Many surgeons are starting to get mad at me because when they send these patients to me for pre-operative counseling, they rarely ever go back, because this diet has allowed them to lose 1 pound a day as if they had the bypass. They finally see weight loss success when they thought their only option was surgery. And they smile that they avoided such a heavy risk. And it’s all thanks to this new knowledge on the hungerstat.

DIY Electrical Socket Installation

A well planned home has electric sockets at every pre-determined spot in the house, allowing for ease of use anytime of the day. Unfortunately, only 1 or 2 homes out of a hundred have been designed this way. This is the reason why many of us make use of long extension cords that snake around the house – bringing electricity to un-serviced regions of the house. Sometimes it's convenient, oftentimes it's not.

To make the picture more complicated, extension cords are not recommended for heavy or power-intensive appliances, such as washing machines and automatic dryers. In these instances, you really have to install new electric sockets. But how does one do it?

DIY socket installation

Who says it can not be done? "Can not" should be removed from the vocabulary of a competent DIY-er or do-it-yourselfer. If you can follow simple instructions and you know the basic skills of do it yourself home repair, home improvement and renovation, then there is no way that you're going to fail.

Note of warning

If you think that the power cables in your house have already been battered too much by overuse, misuse or by it general age, then leave the task to a qualified electrician who can do it professionally. Losing a finger or a whole hand to electricity is never a pretty sight. Do not bite off what you can not chew, especially if you're dealing with electricity.

The steps

1. Safety first: turn of the main switch, and make sure that all the lines that you would be touching have absolutely no power. If you think some lines are not controlled by an automatic main power switch, use a small volt tester to make sure. If you can, remove the wounded wires inside the automatic switch to completely render the lines inside the house power-less.

2. Install the sockets one by one. Make sure that you know what kinds of circuits you are dealing with. For example, radial circuits have more than one wire in them. There are earth wires, positive and negative wires, etc. Make sure that you attach these properly to the new sockets before anything else.

3. Remember that sockets should be well above possible flood levels. Flood levels vary from region to region, as well as country to country. As a general rule of thumb, electric sockets and electrical appliances should be placed at least 170 mm above the base ground level. Adjust accordingly, based on your own calculations. But do not place the electric sockets too high up that they become unusable.

4. If you plan to install surface-mounted electrical sockets, then you are in luck. These are reliably easy to install and far easier to observe for defects than other types. Although a bit bulkier, surface-mounted electrical sockets can be easily installed and just as easily removed.

5. Surface-mounted electrical sockets should have "safe boxes" that have been screwed in place before the actual socket is placed inside. Never install "naked" surface-mounted electrical sockets as these can cause immediate shock or even death, especially to small children and pets.

6. Flush-mounted electrical sockets are more difficult to install; you actually have to install it behind the wall. But if you do choose flush-mounted over surface-mounted, you would have the benefit of having a neater installation, minus the bulk.

Will The Zika Virus Derail the 2016 Olympics In Brazil?

Hosting the Olympic Games is a big deal, it puts nations on the map, and shows their first world status – it’s a big honor, and it is very costly – not all nations can afford to even consider it, and those who do, often have to cough up big bucks to host the games and deal with the economic costs later, paying off the debt and bonds taken out to make it all happen. In hindsight many countries wish they’d reconsidered their choice to bid for the big games. Brazil will host the 2016 Olympic Games, but already the troubles are mounting. Let’s talk.

Well now everyone is worried about the Zika Virus in Latin America, and specifically 2016 Olympic Game tourists are considering skipping the trip, which could plague havoc on the financial challenges that Brazil already faces with a declining economy and negative GDP growth. One article in the Daily Mail published on January 30, 2016 titled; “Could rampant Zika virus that causes deformed babies stop the Olympics? Rio faces crisis as female spectators and athletes are warned not to go,” by Flora Drury stated; four new important developments to this crisis:

– Panic is spreading with six months to go until the Opening Ceremony

– Australian team tells female athletes to consider taking part ‘very carefully’

– Airlines offering refunds to pregnant women travelling to infected countries

– Government says they are doing everything possible ahead of the Games

Of course, this isn’t the only problem as the Brazilian Government has displaced slums for Olympic facilities development and moved to generally clean up crime ridden areas to prevent negative PR on the world stage during the games. All this has already come at a cost to its international reputation across the globe, perhaps similar to the smog and air-pollution issue before and during the Beijing China Olympic Games.

The Guardian reported the Brazilian Police are moving in to clean up areas where Olympic Visitors may travel; “Rio de Janeiro police killed 1,500 in five years, says Amnesty International,” and the article stated; “Rights group report finds almost one in six homicides in Brazil’s Olympic city were by officers on duty and most victims were young, poor, black and male,” and further;

“In a study of official data and newspaper reports of the Olympic host city, the civil rights groups found that almost one in six homicides were carried out by on-duty policy officers as part of a “strategy of fear” in favela communities. It said more than 75% of the victims from 2010 to 2013 were black men aged between 15 and 29. Most cases were filed as “resistance followed by death” which shields the perpetrators from civilian courts. Of 220 investigation, Amnesty found only one case that led to an officer being charged.”

Now some are asking not if the Games will lose money in Brazil, but rather how much. That’s unfortunate, and something to consider. Think on it.

Natural Water Harvesting Is the Way to Go

When we were children, we barely had any care for the world. All we would do is, wake up, call out to mama and dada, eat, play and sleep. When we started going to school, we finally acquired a little sense of responsibility. We’d wake up at a prescribed time, without caring for what our bodies were used to the past few years. We’d do our homework, we’d get our first taste of getting reprimanded, and we’d meet new friends. We finally make it through high school, our first heartbreak, and move on to university. While going through this process, we can’t wait till we get out so we can finally live our lives freely.

Or so we thought.

What we didn’t know is after we walk out of that graduation hall, we are automatically thrown into the world of adulthood with responsibilities that we were never really prepared for. All we know is that Mon and Dad paid the bills and we got free food and lodging. Now that we’re adults, we’ve moved out of Mom and Dad’s house and got ourselves a job. Now the thing is, we’ve got bills and taxes to pay, food and lodging’s no longer free either. Now this article isn’t just to give you a reality check, but actually to give you an idea on how to make expenses a little bit easier on you. Let’s talk about saving half your expenses on water. What do you usually use water for?

Taking showers, washing clothes, cooking food, watering your plants, flushing the toilet and cleaning pretty much anything. How much can you actually use for yourself? You spend more water on everything else, that we’re sure of. The perfect solution to spending less money on water without using less water is well, to use free water. Free water is everywhere, you just have to know how to store it properly. Rainwater is free, and you can use it as much as you want.

You can keep your main water system for taking your showers, cooking your food and for anything you want. You can use your stored rainwater for anything else. If you’re uncomfortable about using rainwater for your laundry and flushing the toilet, set up a small barrel under one of your roof guttering’s downspouts, put a screen on top of the barrel to make sure no debris goes in, and drill a faucet close to the bottom of the barrel. Don’t forget to set up an overflow hole, as well.

Try out this system for a couple of months and you’ll be sure to never want to go without a water tank. You might even want to add another.

Integrating High-Performance Concrete Barriers

High-Performance barriers are often utilized in areas where tractor-trailers and similarly larger vehicles are frequently present. Since these trucks have a higher deck than the average vehicle it is important to not only provide the added height, but to also give stronger support at the top of these barriers. Without the added support, these larger vehicles would impact the top of the barrier and simply roll over them into oncoming traffic or off raised roadways. The impact would also cause spalling, projecting portions of the barrier into oncoming traffic. Thus, the use of reinforced concrete glare screens has been adopted in many applications as an additional preventative to this occurrence.

Along many New Jersey highways a 42 inch concrete median barrier has been installed to assist in containing tractor trailers and other larger vehicles while redirecting them back to the roadway. These median barriers are often set into the roadway giving them added support and preventing them from turn over on impact. The uppermost portion of these barriers is also heavily reinforced to absorb the impact from these larger vehicles.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has crash-tested and developed a 1070-mm- (42-in-) high concrete median barrier that can safely contain and redirect tractor-trailers to an upright position. This barrier is made with the NJ-shape forms. The 75-mm vertical reveal is covered up with asphalt to anchor the barrier against overturning. (See figure 2.) This turns the barrier profile into an F-shape that does not have a vertical reveal. The NJTA’s Heavy-Vehicle Median Barrier is 305-mm- (12-in-) thick at the top. It is heavily reinforced.

Despite these added safety precautions some states do not utilize the thicker barrier tops even though there is a chance that spalling can occur on impact. History has shown that these incidents are extremely rare and do not warrant the added costs of the thicker barriers.

Small Fireproof Safes

Buying a small fireproof safe for your home or business is a great investment. Having your own safe means you do not have to pay for a box at the bank and you do not have to travel to the bank every time you need something. Beside keeping cash, it's a perfect place for passports, social security cards, jewelry, important documents such as titles to a vehicle, etc.

Safes are available in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Some weigh as little at 14 pounds and others weigh over 100. The smaller ones are useful for cash, small items, a coin box for an event, etc. A safe to hold documents, jewelry, etc. should be a little bit larger.

Things to look for when buying are, size, weight, convenience of use. Some safes are easier to open. This is good for you, but also easier if stolen to open so may not be a good point. It should be a little bit difficult to open so even if someone walks off with it, chances are they will not get into it. It should be fire proof and water proof and not fire resistant and water resistant. If you do have a fire, most likely it will be put out with water so it should be both.

The larger safes come with an anchoring hole so you can bolt the safe to a wall or floor and no one will be able to remove it. This is great for putting in your basement or closet and keeping all your papers and valuables in. The small fireproof safes are great for keeping things safe and dry. They should have a handle on them so you can move them around. If there is a combination lock, make sure it has a key backup in case you forget the combination.
