Semolina Fish Fry

Almost every weekend we have house parties. Friends coming over for food and drinks often makes me think of offering them something new and interesting.

I used to serve packaged food most of the times but considering their ill effects on health, finally made me get into the kitchen and take things into my hands.

Being a non-vegetarian always leaves me with a lot of room to experiment with the key ingredients being Chicken or Fish. Nevertheless, the benefits of including Fish in your diet is much greater than any other form of meat. Hence, I tried using the healthiest option of them all, “Salmon”. Rich in Omega 3, a great source of protein and Vitamin B, loaded with antioxidants. This recipe was going to score an “A” in terms of health. But, to enhance the taste, the crunchier the better, so why not make a “Fish Fry”.

A Recent Discovery of a Great Appetizer is My Semolina Fish Fry! Healthy with approximately 120 calories. per serving, Serves 4 persons, Cooking Time 35-40 minutes. Quick and Easy!

1) Fish Fillets (of your choice), I have used Salmon – 5-6 Pieces

2) Semolina Flour – 1/2 cup (easily available in Super markets like Walmart)

3) Garlic Paste – 1 tsp

4) Red chili powder (Paprika) – 1/2 tsp

5) Lemon Juice – 1 tsp

6) Salt – to taste

7) Olive Oil – For shallow frying

1) Wash the Fish Fillets and remove the skin if required, make sure using soft hands while wash and rubbing if using Salmon, as the pieces are delicate and break easily.

2) In a bowl, mix a teaspoon of oil, salt, Paprika, Lemon juice and garlic paste.

Spread and rub all over the fish pieces, cover and keep it in the fridge for around 15-20 minutes.

3) Once marinated well, heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan.

On a plate spread Semolina flour.

4) Wrap up the fish fillets with the Semolina flour and shallow fry them in the pan.

5) It usually takes 5-7 minutes on a medium heat for fish to be fried from one side, turn and fry for another 5-7 minutes on the other side.

6) It may take a few extra minutes to get crispy and well cooked.

7) Once done, take them out on a plate and serve hot with a Sauce or a dip of your choice.

Ways to Implement Concrete in Your Residence

If you are looking for a way to add personality and style to your living space, then why not considering concluding concrete elements to your residence? While many people are familiar with residential concrete in terms of outside pathways or driveways, concrete has more potential than just the exterior of your home. Not sure? No problem!

Residential concrete has come a long way. No longer is one limited to a standard gray color, or a basic pattern or finish. Today, the colors have more depth and variation making them perfect for a wide array of projects. If you are looking for ways to add some personality to your home, then consider these ideas:

  • Countertops – This is actually becoming a popular way to implement the use of residential concrete. Rather than opt for pricier stone countertops, concrete can be used to create one of a kind patterns and designs. You can even add your own elements to the concrete – small pebbles, antique silverware, beads, etc. – to craft a piece that showcases all your favorite things. Then apply a sealant to preserve your style for decades.
  • Accents – Choose a few different molds (or make your own) and create custom artwork that compliments your style. A little color pigment can be added to the concrete mix to help it match your space even more.
  • Wall treatment – It may sound extreme to use concrete for an interior wall treatment, but properly applied, concrete is great for crafting a backsplash.
  • Basement – Basements and concrete flooring are common, but you do not have to stick with boring gray floors with no style whatever. Choose a color or pattern for your basement flooring, and have fun having a concrete floor that shows off what you love.
  • Sinks – Crazy as it might sound, with a bit of creativity and research, you will discover that you can make a concrete sink that compliments either the minimalist style as well as the charm of country chic.
  • Fireplaces – Let's not forget the standard use of concrete! Concrete is one of the tried and true materials for building a chimney. After all, it last for years, and requires minimal maintenance.
  • Furniture – For either outdoor or indoor spaces, a number of homeowners are crafting furniture using concrete and custom molds.

When it comes to residential concrete, many projects are only limited by your imagination. Take some time to brainstorm ways to implement concrete into your home or office – the results might inspire to start a new trend or craft a place that screams your personality.

Get the Plank Out of Your Eye Before You Want to Help Another With His Speck – Matthew 7: 3-5

So what does this mean? Can we actually understand this and when we do understand it, is it possible to live it? Sure we can, I know people that live it really well and I am quite good at it these days myself.

Matthew 7: 3-5 (New King James Version)

3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

One of the easiest things to do is find fault. Bad news travels far and gossip is a tasty morsel the writer of the proverbs says. It is so easy to look at people's lives and find their faults and not like them for it.

Many of us feel the need to say to a person that they need to change and stop doing the thing that is wrong. Many of us are not led by the Holy Spirit in these matters and we have a big log of judgment in our eyes. Jesus is not like that. Jesus has all the time in the world for sinners. In fact the reason He has not returned yet is that He wants more time to save the 4 billion people that are not Christians on this earth.

Jesus has every right to judge us, but the only judgment Jesus is going to do is on judgment day.

Do you know the plank of indemnity and judgment and any other of our sins is a lot easier to take out of our eyes? You see it is easy to get hold of a plank, and a lot more difficult to get hold of a little speck in a person's eye.

We like to judge others. We get offended by people's behavior and yet our own lives are not spotless. We need to let the Holy Spirit do His work in our lives.

I have a friend that used to be in the gay lifestyle. When I met him he had not been with a man for two years and also had not masturbated for that time also. Yet he still had earrings in both the right and left ear. Normally, here in Australia having an earring in your right ear means that you are gay. I was tempted to tell him to take that earring out of his ear but but Jesus told me to be quiet and not to say a word. Within a year it was out of his ear.

When I saw it was not in his ear for a month or so I told him I was proud that he did not have it in his ear anymore. He asked why I was happy and I told him that while he had it he was still advertising that he was gay. He told me that if I had told him to take it out a year before that he would not have continued our friendship.

Do you walk around with a great log of offense and judgment in your eye? Have you got a total clear record when it comes to sin? Are there things about your life that others can see are very bad? Jesus says first clean up your act before you start telling others to change.

Jesus as I said is not silly. Living a loving grace filled life, like my pastor who does not judge anyone, is just a superior way to go.

Of course you can pray for your friend and you can come along them and tell them you are in their corner and that you are going to pray for them and their issues that God would grant them the grace to conquer them.

Jesus is so cool the way He loves us so extravagantly. His Holy Spirit is constantly in our ear about things we need to change, and still Jesus blesses us with His joy, peace that come from his presence while we walk out our lives walk.

Be like Jesus. Do not be offended. Love!

Be Blessed

Matthew Robert Payne.

Using Conference Calling to Plan a School Carnival

School carnivals are a great way to raise money for your school but planning one takes a significant amount of time, energy, and cooperation. You will want to offer a variety of games, events, and food so that you can attract a larger crowd and raise more money. And you will want to take certain factors into consideration when making choices for your school carnival such as the season, the age categories of reasonably attendees, and cost.

Taking care of all the responsibilities yourself will likely be too much, especially if you want your school carnival to really be successful. In addition to seeking help from other parents and staff members you should follow a planning schedule in order to complete tasks efficiently and timely. Three simple suggestions will help you to get started in planning a great school carnival.

Determine Games, Events, and Food – Obviously one of the most important parts of your planning for your school carnival will be determining what games and events you will have and what food you will serve. You will want to choose a wide variety of age appropriate games and events and be sure that you have something there for the adults to enjoy as well.

The foods you choose should be simple enough to prepare for students to be able to offer a helping hand since you are throwing a school carnival. You can find some ideas online or ask for suggestions from students, parents, and faculty.

Organize Responsibilities – After planning games, events, and food it is time to start organizing responsibilities. One way to do this is to provide a sign-up sheet both for at school and one to send home to parents in case some parents would like to contribute by volunteering at the carnival.

Be sure when you are doing this though that you put every little job on the list and double check to make sure you did not miss anything. You do not want to reach the day of the carnival with unassigned duties and nobody to fulfill them. It may be a good idea to even schedule a couple of call on people just in cases any contingencies arise.

Hold a Last Minute Conference Call – To be sure that everything is in order you should schedule a conference call with all of your helpers for the night before the carnival. Touching base with everyone simultaneously is easy with conferencing and is the best way to confirm that everyone and everything is ready for your school carnival.

Right from the beginning of the planning stages you should begin looking for a free conference calling program online so that you can have it downloaded and ready when you need it. You may even find conference calling useful during the planning stages as well. There are so many benefits that conferencing can provide for individuals planning events such as a school carnival so be sure to make use of this useful tool.

A lot of work will have to go into planning a great school carnival but it will be worth it in the end when you see how much money can be raised. Be sure to plan ahead and utilize conferencing and everything should go off without a hitch on the day of the carnival.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Metal Railings

Railings are made from different materials, and each has it own characteristics. Among all materials, metals have grown to be the favorite materials, owning to its durability and strength and different metals have their own characteristics, which give them their status among manufacturers.

Advantages Of Metal Railings

Unlike PVC, Glass and wood railings, metal railings have its own advantages. Following are a few advantages of metal railings.

– Metal facilitates construction of small and lightweight sections to suit once purpose.

– Metal railings are durable as they do not splinter and corrode like wood.

– Personalized designs are possible with these.

– They can be made from casting or flat product depending on ones lifestyle and budget.

– Metal is comparatively a better choice over PVC and wood especially in outdoor conditions.

– Powder coating the metal ensures a longer life for the metal railing, and can help to increase its life span up to 25 to 30 years.

– Low cost of maintenance is the biggest advantage; wiping with a wet cloth is all it needs for cleaning.

Here we present the commonly used metals for making Railings. Generally a lot of metals are used to make railings but the most common among them are: –

1. Stainless Steel: it is the most commonly used metal because it is durable and strong, besides being comparatively lighter than other metals. Steel also has the capability to maintain its luster for a longer time and hence maintenance is very low. Workability of stainless steel is very high and its resistance is more when being passed through power press machines. Above all it gives the structure a modern look.

2. Wrought iron: it the next most favorite metal for making railings, as it gives the structure an antique look. It is basically maintenance free; all it is requires is a good coat of paint and regular cleaning to keep it new. The only disadvantage of wrought iron is that it is very heavy and difficult to repair as welding it is difficult, and getting the same design is also very difficult, hence once broken the only option is complete replacement.

3. Aluminum: lightweight and durability are the characteristic that makes aluminum one of the favorite metals. Maintenance cost of aluminum is similar to stainless steel and is best when it comes to making square shapes and straight-line structures. The workability of aluminum is low compared to other metals, especially when it comes to making curved structures and hence is not the most preferred metal for railings.

4. Brass: once the most preferred metal among the rich and the famous in medieval times, brass has lost its status to other metals. Modern day railing manufacturers rarely use brass, except as a covering at some places, as brass requires regular polishing to maintain its luster.

Therefore, it can be concluded that out of the four metals only stainless steel is in vogue and hence the most preferred metal of railing manufacturers.

The Aesthetics and Function of Deck Balusters

Homeowners with kids must ensure that their home is child-friendly. In other words, the safety of the children is given utmost importance. No dangerous places or objects should be around so as not to harm the kids present. One of the ways to ensure that your child is safe in your home is to install balusters to homes with deck railroads in order to prevent unnecessary accidents and mishaps.

Deck balusters are actually the vertical pieces you found between the posts of your deck railing. This is primarily installed in order to guarantee the safety of the people inside the house especially the children. This will prevent them from falling from the deck because the deck balusters are the ones that hold the railing to the posts. But with the dawn of the new technology, new improvements were made and designed in order to cater to the growing needs of its customers and the deck balusters are never left behind. Today, you can now find different baluster materials and colors so you will not be limited in your choices. All the more, the vast choices will allow you to build the baluster that best fits your preference and needs.

As you may notice, the balusters offered in the early years are just wood pickets that are fitted in straight line. But many baluster manufacturers noted that using wood as a material would entail constant maintenance as damages are often seen and detected. Wood is also very hard to repaint. But despite all these, wood balusters are still available in the market. It is still the prerogative of the homeowner on what baluster material he chooses. On the other hand, there are also balusters that are made from new age materials that offer classic old style look. Balusters can be made from powder-coated aluminum and this offers a simple and traditional look. Having this kind of baluster will only require you to screw the baluster on the wood or composite railing with the use of matching screws during installation. This kind is now available in round or square shapes. The good thing about this baluster is that maintenance is no longer necessary. With this, you now break free from all your baluster maintenance chores.

You can also find balusters that are made from aluminum. This actually looks like forged wrought iron are less expensive unlike the real wrought iron balusters. Aluminum balusters are mostly offered in 2 colors; black and bronze. However, you can also spot other colors in the market if you can not settle between the two colors mentioned. You can also find different designs of aluminum balusters and they can be employed as an excellent centerpiece along with the traditional round or square balusters. Among the usual designs of this baluster type include arc, colonial, baroque and the list goes on.

The glass baluster can also be a good option. This type is usually made from thick safety glass or transparent Perspex material. This however is not advisable to be used if you have children at home. Balusters can be sooner to swinging bats or rolling balls. And since this type of baluster is made of glass, breakage could have been a typical scenario.

How to Select the Right Balustrade For Your House

Balustrades have attained an almost universal importance when it comes to house building and house decoration. In fact, balustrades are not a recent architectural phenomenon. The history of balustrades can be traced back to the great Roman Empire when the ruling elite started building huge mansions and palaces with these balustrades as a major feature of the external and internal architecture.

The importance of balustrades has transcended down the historical upheavals and has become a major feature of architecture and home decoration. However, some big problems are associated with balustrades. The largest issue is that of selecting the right balustrade for your house. A number of factors come into play and you can not neglect any of them.

Construction of the house

If you live in a small house, balustrades can not be installed in a big fashion. In most cases, people turn to balustrades while installing staircases and balconies. However, the problem of space restricts them to install only a couple of balustrades. The best way of doing this is to install balustrades on the staircase railings as well as small balconies erected in front of bedrooms. This strategy would add a great dimension to your interior and exterior home decoration and that too too without any major expenses.

Bigger houses, on the other hand can maximize the use of balustrades, as they have plenty of space. They can make use of balustrades in balconies, stair cases, facades and open-air arcades, among other places. Additionally, they can use intricate designs of balustrades that require more space as compared to a small house.

Architecture of the house

More importantly, it is the architectural design of a house that dictates the use of balustrades. If you are a fan of vintage design, and you have constructed your house according to vintage standards, balustrades would look great and add to the beauty of the house.

On the contrary, modern architectural designs do not allow any room for the use of balustrades. Glass is used extensively in modern housing designs and this includes glass railings. In that case, the use of a vintage looking balustrade would spoil the entire ambiance of the construction.

However, there are some interiors settings where you can blend the contemporary design with a vintage touch. In that case, you can use balustrades on the internal balconies and staircases with a glass touch on the external section of the house. This combination of balustrades would enhance the beauty of your house and would also add to the style quotient of your house.

Final selection

Once you have analyzed the architecture and other settings of your house, it is time to select the right balustrades for your house. As mentioned earlier, small houses do not need any extravagant balustrades. A simple balustrade selection would have been more than enough. Bigger houses, of course can enjoy a greater variation. Again, select a balustrade that fits the overall construction of the house and the place where you are going to install it.

The Power of Limiting or Empowering Beliefs

Beliefs are at the very heart of us. They shape our world as we know it and who we are within the world.

Beliefs are creeds and doctrines you hold about life, yourself and others. They are responsible for who you are, how you have and who you will become. Your beliefs are your guiding principles, your faith or passion and provide meaning and direction in life for you.

In essence, what you believe, whether true or false, is your reality and you have accordingly. Beliefs can if worked well, be a formidable force for good in your life. They can also limit your thoughts and actions and have devastating consequences.

Anthony Robbins in his book "Unlimited Power", gives an example of a two groups of unfortunate people with bleeding ulcers. With the first group, they were told they were receiving medication that would provide complete relief. The people in the second group were informed that their medication was experimental and little was known about it`s efficiency. As you may guess, 70% of the people in the first group experienced a major improvement with their ulcers. Sadly, only 25% of people in the second group reported the same relief.

In fact, both groups received a placebo.

What made the difference here was the belief systems of members in each group. Years ago, it was said that no human being could run more than a mile in 4 minutes. This was blown out of the water with Sir Roger Bannister aged 25 years at the time, running the first mile in less than 4 minutes. This historic event took place on 6 May 1954 during a meet at Iffley Road Track at Oxford University. It was watched by about 3,000 spectators. The claim that a 4-minute mile was once thought to be impossible by informed observers was and is a widely propagated myth created by sportswriters and debunked by Bannister himself in his memoir, The Four Minute Mile (1955).

In a UK poll triggered by Channel 4 in 2002, the British public voted Roger Bannister's historic sub-4-minute mile Number 13 in the list of the 100 Greatest Sporting Moments.

Incredibly, just 46 days later on June 21 in Turku, Finland, Roger's record was broken by Australian runner, Michael Landy. Michael was the second man to break the four-minute mile barrier in the mile run. And two months after that, during the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games hosted in Vancouver in Canada, Michael Landy and Roger Bannister competed against each other in a race billed as "The Miracle Mile". They both realized it again with Roger winning and Michael Landy 0.8 s behind him.

On February 20, 1994, forty years after Roger Bannister's breaking of the barrier, the Irish runner Eamonn Coghlan became the first man over the age of 40 to run a sub-four-minute mile. He was in fact 41 years old at the time. He ran more than a second faster than Roger. It was a different kind of mile of course – less significant possibly. However, it was still the culmination of a near-impossible quest. And, beyond that, a race that will stand in the history books forever.

Here's how Sir Roger Bannister himself described one of the greatest moments in sports history:

"I had a moment of mixed joy and anguish, when my mind took over. It raced well ahead of my body and drew my body. unity of movement and aim. The world appeared to stand still, or did not exist. The only reality was the next two hundred yards of track under my feet.

When he crossed the finish line with a time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds, he broke through a psychological barrier as well.

The belief that they could do it became true because they acted on their beliefs, and their actions shaped the world.

If you believe in success, you make your own values which construct the framework that your life is built around. You know what your goals are, and you know what you want to achieve. You put your mind in the right place in order to make it happen! You set out to do something and to succeed in doing it. It really does not matter what, or how humble the undertaking is. If you believe you can succeed, you will. Achieving success in whatever endeavor you choose may be the goal of life.

If you believe that you will fail, chances are – you are setting yourself up for failure. Success is based on a mindset that starts with believing in yourself. If you believe in your potential to make yourself the best YOU that you can be, then the options are limitless. That is when things will start to happen.

As Henry Ford said: "If you think you can do a thing or think you can not do a thing, you're right."

We create our experiences. Very often, when it comes to success, we are our own worst enemy and we do not even know it. Through worry and fear, we create all the failures. Because we become what we think about most. Our thoughts create our next experience, our next moment.

And our beliefs create our thoughts.

The core beliefs or rules of life that you live by today are not merely those your parents, schools and society taught you. They also come from your culture, friends, television, music, books, politics, as well as assumptions and misunderstandings.

Take a few moments to think about beliefs you hold that might be holding you back.

It can be in the form "I am …" or just about the world in general.

There is no true or false with beliefs. Only disempowering and empowering ones. Do not worry about "truth", and instead decide if it's useful to you, or if a different belief would be more useful.

Once you have identified a limiting belief, know that this belief can be changed and overcome. Choose a belief you would like to have instead of the limiting belief. Better still, a belief that you previously thought impossible, that you could never do or be. Once you've identified your limiting belief, think about the emotional payoff it gives you which is personal and unique to you.

Then ask yourself: "Is the emotional payoff I am getting worth holding on to this belief"? Working with your limiting beliefs and changing them will have bigger and positive consequences as you go through life! And that is something you can really start to believe in – now!

One way to you remove these obstacles and realize your potential by changing your limiting beliefs is through NLP, advanced patterns of EFT and through hypnosis where you can change beliefs quickly and permanently to something you do want to believe, a more productive belief in the conscious and unconscious mind. With an experienced and competent facilitator, the process is subtle and often in-direct through stories, metaphors and life examples to elevate awareness and provoke a sense of curiosity, levity and ability to change by changing your internal thoughts. Furthermore, EFT, NLP and hypnotherapy processes can help you almost every aspect of life through the power of changing limiting beliefs to more empowering ones and to subjectively experience your new reality.

Personal history is only a record of the past and your future is filled with limitless possibilities.

Best Wireless iPad Keyboard

Choosing the best wireless iPad keyboard is easier said than done. Just try a quick Amazon search and you will be bombarded by hundreds of different options, all claiming different things with different features, but which of these features can actually benefit you? After pondering over this same question for hours and hours myself, I decided that the only way to find out was to try a few of these keyboards out myself. In doing so, I was able to separate the best from the down right bad. So, here is my impression of what makes the perfect bluetooth iPad keyboard.

Firstly, the main reason that any user would decide to toss their touchscreen keyboard in favor of a proper keyboard is to do with how much typing you actually do. There are some tablet users that will only make use of their device to browse the web in bed, do a little internet shopping and play a few games. However, for those of us that bought the iPad in the hopes of using it to carry out some extensive typing tasks for work, university or school, then the touchscreen poses a bit of a problem.

The big issue is that you are much more prone to making spelling errors when you are trying to type quickly. This is not because you are a poor typer, but because your fingers do not have that same physical contact with the keys that you can only get with a physical set of button-like keys. In this way, you can easily skip over a few keys by accident, press the complete wrong key or accidently flick on the caps lock switch without even realizing. This becomes much more of a problem when you are trying to do some fast paced typing and you do not have the time to keep looking down at your screen. After writing a good few pages, you can look back on your text to see hundreds of little errors that need correcting before the document can be delivered or saved. Naturally, this is beyond annoying.

This is why you need the best bluetooth iPad keyboard to accommodate your typing fluency. Having the keys in front of you will enable you to be much more assured in your typing since you can easily transfer the typing skills you already have directly into them.

So which product did I go for?

Well, the clear winner for me was the Blurex D-Lux leather iPad case with bluetooth iPad keyboard. The first huge pull factor of this product was its full set of hard material keys. This is such a big deal because the majority of similar wireless iPad keyboards actually tote keys made of a soft, silicone material. Having tried a few of them out, it was pretty clear that this setup was not for me. The D-Lux keys on the other hand felt familiar and responsive, making them absolutely perfect for typing up my reams and reams of lecture notes without ever needing to look at the text I had written to ensure it was correct.

The bluetooth iPad keyboard also features a number of excellent shortcut keys which were ideal for editing documents without needing to actually touch the screen to copy, paste and cut. In this way, I could keep the screen clean and finger print free.

The leather iPad case itself is a fantastic little accessory that provides all the protection you could possibly need in order to keep your investment safe and protected from those all too familiar scratches and scrapes from everyday use. It also cleverly folds the keyboard and iPad together into a neat, portable package that you can then take with you anywhere. In addition, if you are sick of always having to lean over your iPad's screen in order to actually see the touchscreen keyboard, then the leather iPad case provides you with the ideal solution by tilting the screen at an angle that is perfectly suited for a comfortable typing experience.

So without a doubt, if you are looking for the best wireless iPad keyboard to rejuvenate your tablet experience, you can not do better than the Blurex D-Lux.

Making Sense Out of Baby Boomer’s Frontotemporal Dementia

In March 2007, my husband, Dave, 57, was officially diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). I had never heard of FTD, let alone a baby boomer having Alzheimer’s, or any other related dementia. I thought it was only reserved for those people over 80–with crinkly skin and blue-white hair!

Frontotemporal is the second most common form of dementia, under the age of 65–behind Alzheimer’s. Initially, FTD affects the front half (frontal and temporal lobes) of the brain, while Alzheimer’s starts in the back half, where most of our memory is stored.

Damage to Dave’s ‘frontal’ lobes, which are responsible for personality, judgment and emotions, is the reason he is withdrawing–often with a ‘far away’ or vacant look on his face. He has lost his initiative and much of his ability, to carve birds–his favourite hobby for over 35 years. Loud or high-pitched sounds, such as babies crying, sirens, or trucks shifting gears on the highway, irritate his brain, causing him to wince with tears. These noises would be the equivalent of 100 fingernails scraping on a chalkboard. Dave has also developed rituals and routines, which are quite rigid. For instance, Monday is ‘cutting the lawn’ day–regardless of the weather, Tuesday is ‘gym’ day, Wednesday is a ‘garbage dump’ day (and it has to be a certain dump) and so on. The frontal lobes helps us to problem solve, and to use our common sense. I have to admit, this is one of the toughest areas for me to be patient. Sometimes, taking a deep breath, or counting to 20, doesn’t cut it! Last night was a perfect example. Our young springer spaniel, which has poor bladder control, got excited when our neighbour came to the door, and she peed in the foyer. Dave looked at the puddle, and even stepped over it, without thinking about wiping it up with a towel. Meanwhile, our spaniel walked back through her little mess, leaving wet paw prints all over the house!

In addition to the frontal lobe changes, both of Dave’s ‘temporal lobes’ are shrinking, and being replaced with fluid. It shows up as large, blackened areas on his CT scan. Since this area is responsible for understanding and recognizing words, faces, and their meanings, reading grocery lists, instruction manuals etc. are a challenge. The saddest loss is that Dave doesn’t recognize people he has known for years–even first cousins, and teachers, who were his colleagues for 25 years. When we are invited to a party, or any social gathering, Dave says very little because of his difficulty finding the right words. When he does speak, he will use many words to describe the one that he can’t find–known as ‘circumlocution’.

The progression for dementia varies with each person, but is similar to the Alzheimer’s rate: 5-8 years from time of diagnosis. Presently, there are no cures or medications, which will slow down FTD–they will only treat symptoms, such as depression or anxiety. Recently, research has shown that Frontotemporal dementia has a genetic component; it has something to do with tau protein production and chromosome 17. There is genetic testing for our 2 grown children, but I don’t have the inner strength to deal with that yet. Interestingly, chromosome 17 is the same one for Parkinson, and the reason why 10% of patients with FTD, show related symptoms. The classic signs of Parkinson–intention hand tremors and pill rolling with the fingers–showed up in Dave within the past year. This is another reason why he doesn’t spend much time carving and painting his ducks, which require fine and accurate hand coordination.

As more baby boomers reach their prime years–40’s, 50’s and 60’s–you will see a significant increase in ‘younger’ or early-onset dementia. Hopefully, brain research will not only find a cure for Alzheimer’s and related dementia, but just as importantly, discover how we can maintain a healthy brain, so that we never have to experience this debilitating and progressive condition.

If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News

This museum combines exhibits of the natural history of Virginia with living exhibits of animals, birds and fish native to the state. The VLM is not a zoo, please note – all of the animals there were either injured, orphaned, or born in captivity.

I'll discuss how to get there first, and then describe the exhibits and activities you'll see there. To get the nitty gritty immediately – this is an excellent museum, and is popular with kids, so families will enjoy it, as will anyone with any interest in natural history or the environment.

How Much Time Will You Need?

You should plan to spend about two hours at the museum, although you can certainly spend as much time there as you like. There are four Galleries featuring the natural history exhibits, a few large aquarium tanks, and a long outdoors, handicapped-accessible elevated boardwalk that enables you to walk through various habitats and view the animals, as well as various types of trees.

A new "Wild Side Café" opened in late September, 2007, so it's possible to get food, and then take it outside to the picnic areas in order to relax and eat.

How To Get There

The Museum is located at 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. I suggest you get precise directions from your location to the museum via an Internet driving directions site.

J. Clyde Morris is an extremely busy stretch of road, with three lanes of traffic heading south, and three north, for much of its length, so you will do well to have a second pair of eyes looking out for the signs – most of which are reliably small, pale cream-colored, with pale green print alerting you when to turn.

The museum is located in a hollow, such that, if you're driving north / east on J. Clyde, across the three lanes of traffic coming in the other direction, you will not be able to see the buildings themselves. You'll see a sign for the SPCA on your right – and the large sign for the Virginia Living Museum is on your left. There are a set of stop lights here so it will be easy for you to turn left, go across the three lanes onto the frontage drive, which you'll follow along to the right.

If you're coming south / west on J. Clyde, you will first pass the Riverside Hospital, then go up a bit of a hill. Looking to your right, down in the hollow, you'll see the green roof of the museum, as well as a silver cupola on the right hand side of the building that houses the observatory. You will see a small sign telling you that the museum is the "next right," and the first turning you come to on your right, which also happens to be the first set of stop lights you come to, is the one you take onto the frontage road. (The large sign, visible in the other direction, is not visible from this direction until you're right on top of it.)

If you miss your turning, in either direction, do not despair. U-turns are allowed here – so simply turn around at the next appropriate spot and go back.

Parking Lot

When you first come to the frontage road, you'll have a choice to go left or right. Go right. To the left is the road to Deer Park Elementary School. The first parking lot you come to is an "overflow" parking lot for school buses. Just keep on going to the parking lot in front of the museum.

What Time To Go – Seasons

This museum is visited frequently by schools during the school year. Usually not in September – but come October, the field trips begin. However, school buses must be back at their schools by 2 pm, so if you do not want to deal with a lot of kids running around, plan your visit for after that time. (Note the Outdoor Trail closes at 4.30 pm and the museum itself closes at 5 pm.) On the other hand, seeing the excitement of children as they touch the horseshoe crabs and other marine animals in the Touch Tank, or spot an animal on the Outdoor Trail, can heighten your own enjoyment of the museum.

As you walk towards the front entrance, you'll see on your left a small sculpture of two bobcats chasing a rabbit. There's also a sundial set into the walkway, with yourself as the gnomon.

-Virginia Garden

Before you enter the museum, look to your right. (Or you may have noticed this already, depending on where you've parked.) To your far right you'll see a building that houses the planetarium (closed now, except for special occasions), and various classes. In front of that building is a new, permanent outdoor "exhibit" which opened in March, 2007 – the Virginia Garden, featuring plants indigenous to Virginia from the time of the Powhatan (1607) onward. You can wander through this short trail, with explanatory signs in front of variously-planted plots, free of charge …

Enter the museum, and you're in a large foyer. To your right is the Wild Things Museum Store, full of books, T-shirts, plush toys, birding tools and so on. (You can go into the store without having to enter the museum, and it's a fun place to browse around, so if you have the time …) Also to your right is the Wild Side Cafe.

The Admissions Desk is straight ahead. At the time of this writing, tickets for adults are $ 13 (with discount for seniors) and $ 10 for children – under the age of 12! Consider getting a membership if you live anywhere in the area.

To your immediate left is the room in which the changing Exhibits are held. You can go there first, or wait until you're done with the rest of the museum. These exhibits usually run for about 4 months each.

Events and Volunteers

Be sure to pick up a flyer at the Admission Desk which lets you know what events are occurring that day – and be sure to ask the clerk at the Desk if anything special is scheduled. Various feedings of the animals take place on a regular basis, and those in the Touch Tank and Aviary are fed every day at specific times.

The observatory is open to observe the sun (with proper protection of course) and moon during the day, and on selected occasions at night. However, this is all dependent on volunteers being available to staff the observatory – so ask at the desk or call before hand to find out if the observatory is open.

There are seasonal events as well – running only a couple of days each. For example at the time of this writing, flyers for the "Night of the Living Museum," a non-scary Halloween event, are set out on the counters. There are plenty of school activities and activities for kids going on all the time, and astronomy programs for adults and kids, so check out their website (given at the bottom of this article) to see what's happening.

The Galleries

The Virginia Living Museum consists of two floors, with two galleries on each floor. There galleries provide information on: the Piedmont and Mountains, the Coastal Plain, the Virginia Underground, and the World of Darkness (ie nocturnal animals).

You enter the museum on the Upper Level. The entrance to the Outdoor Trail and Exhibits is on the Lower Level, and if you want to do that first, either take the spiral staircase, or elevator, down to that level.

Upper Level

Piedmont and Mountains Gallery

On your left is the Piedmont and Mountains Gallery. There's a "Hands-on Activities" niche there, usually unaccompanied when school tours are not in evidence, but you can still poke around them.

The Piedmont is "a plateau between the coastal plain and the Appalachian Mountains, including parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama." Walk through this gallery into the Appalachian Mountain Cove, an "outdoors" area reproducing the Appalachian habitat. You are actually looking down over the Cove, which extends upwards from the Lower Level.

Coastal Plain Gallery

Before you go into the Coastal Plain Gallery, you'll want to visit the Touch Tank, which is always manned by a volunteer to encourage visitors to touch the horseshoe crabs and other marine crustaceans on offer in the tank. There's also a docent inside the gallery, to talk about the Bay aquarim through which you walk on the way to the rest of the exhibits. And then, out into the "outdoor" exhibit of the Cypress Swamp, where you can see alligators, turtles, ducks and so on. Again, you are looking down over the Cove, which extends upwards from the Lower Level.

Descend to the Lower Level via the spiral staircase in the center of the building, or take the elevator. The first thing you'll see is a dinosaur sculpture. Plenty of dinosaur tracks have been found in Virginia, but no dinosaur bones.

Virginia's Underground Gallery

To your left is the Underground Gallery. Again, there's a hands-on activity section, which is only manned during field trips, but you can still poke around it.

The Underground Gallery itself assemblies of a mock-up of a limestone cave, and an underground mine.

Virginia's World of Darkness Gallery

Poke around the hands-on section, then journey int the World of Darkness Gallery, to see animals that come out at night, such as owls, flying squirrels, and so on.

Outdoor Trail and Exhibits

When you exit to the Outdoor Trail, you will see a butterfly garden in between the doors. On your right a couple of beavers, busy beavering away. There's also a large tank with a couple of otters. The waters over which you walk on the boardwalk are a tributary of Deer Park Lake, a tributary of the James River.

You'll pass through the 5,500-squarefoot Coastal Plain Aviary – filled with coastal birds such as pelicans, herons, egrets and ducks. Then you walk on the boardwalk through the various habitats of animals – red wolf, bald eagle, vulture, bobcat, deer, wild turkey, skunk and opossum, coyote and fox. (And again, the animals here can not survive in the wild.)

Know Before You Go

The goal of any museum is to tell you what you need to know when you're in the museum. The Virginia Living Museum has excellent explanatory placards everywhere. But you will get so much more pleasure out of the experience if you are actually familiar with the topics before you enter the museum. So check out a few books on the geography and physical features of the state of Virginia – you'll be glad you did!

Opening and Closing

The VLM is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, except during the Winter season (Labor Day to Memorial Day), when the Sunday hours are noon to 5 pm. The Museum is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Better Safe Than Sorry

The phone number for the museum is 757-595-1900. I'm going to suggest that you call the Museum before you set out, to ensure that it is open. This may seem like a waste of time, but I actually had the experience this summer of dropping in to visit the museum only to discover it was closed because of a power outage caused by a storm the night before! Now that's probably a once-in-a-lifetime event, suddenheless it does not take long to make the call and it will save any disappointment later.

Exhibits change on a regular basis, so check the website at to see what's new.

Another website to visit is the Hampton Roads Bird Club at .

Other Attractions

If you exit out of the Museum and turn left, you'll be heading in the direction of the Mariners's Musuem. Just keep going straight until you get to it. If you turn right, the first turning on your right will be at the junction of the Deer Park Elementary School. Keep going, and you'll come to the parking lot for Deer Park, where you can walk through several nature trails.

Use Contemporary Bathroom Vanities To Achieve The Freshest Facade

When you want to achieve an up-to-date ambiance for your bathroom, contemporary bathroom vanities are the way to go. From being linear, minimal, metallic (nickel or chrome) and even futuristic, there can be designs to your liking. It can result in a very interesting beauty that can really give an impression of chic urbanity.

Most of contemporary bathroom vanities do not have any natural material, but they can also end long-term wear and tear, giving you lasting beauty for years. Here are some definitive and common features of contemporary bathroom vanities:

1. The mirrors on contemporary types do not come with frames. They have clean-lined cabinets, and unusual sink designs.

2. Sink designs are always unusual and would stand out on the first look. They would look like bowls on a tabletop. Typically called a vessel sink, there might be more designs but they can really give out the impression of a nice contemporary theme.

3. Clean or very slim cabinets, which tend to flush on to the wall, are one of the qualities of contemporary bathroom vanities.

4. Modern faucets are longer than their older counterparts. They can extend out of the wall. On modern bathrooms, they are usually used to save space but still give out an elegant look without compromising the design.

5. Cabinets come from steel or even glass. There are also other types such as brushed chrome, acrylic, unstained wood and other designs to your liking.

As aesthetics can be the first priority these days, many innovations would certainly come in handy. In the subject of contemporary design, bathrooms with modern designs are a great place to show out this design.

Fortunately, contemporary vanities are convenient due to their packaging. As you can buy them as a set to eliminate the need for mix and matching to fixtures and other vanities, this will give you more focus on the installation rather than focusing on how to match them.

There are also other items to look out for when shopping for your set, towel rails and traps can be a very nice item to customize and install on your contemporary-themed bathroom.

Commodities Astrology

Commodities Astrology? Gold has risen to $ 1600, after touching $ 1921.

We are in the middle of a commodity bull market cycle, which started in 2000. We have been advocating buying gold, from $ 900 onwards. Silver has gone upto $ 32 and lead and others are following suit. Increased demand from China and India and the bearish nature of the stock market, global cues all lead to this commodity bull market cycle.

Gold price is inversely proportional to the Dollex, the USDX. Jupiter rules gold.

It was observed that a Bull Market Cycle lasts for 18 years. In 1982, we had the stock market boom and the bust of 2000. Not only the stock market, but the dot com market also went bust. This started the commodities bull market cycle and experts say it will last till 2016/18. So the stock market is on a decline, along with Realty and dot com. On the contradiction, commodities have gone up.

There are many reasons cited for the commodities boom. A falling US Dollar, the China Effect (more than 700 million Chinese will be added to the consumer class by 2020), the India Effect (more than 300 million Indians will be added to the consumer culture), tight supplies, demand more than supply and the interest rate cuts by the Fed.

Astrologically Jupiter in Aries, about to enter Taurus in May 2012, is responsible for the commodities boom. He rules Gold and other precious metals. (Gurum Kanchana Sannibham).

These are the correspondence between Planets and Metals

Sun – Copper and gold.
Moon -Silver.
Mars – Copper.
Mercury – Brass.
Jupiter – Gold.
Venus – Silver & Aluminum.
Saturn – Iron, Minerals & Crude.

It has been observed that when the Stock Market is in Recession, commodities go up and vice versa. Here these years will seem a boom in commodities.

Some of the reasons cited for the commodities boom

The Fed will lower interest rates
Supplies of oil, grains and metals are very low and the possibility of producing more in the next few years is low
The Dollex, the USDX, may decline further
As the standard of living increases in Chindia (China and India), more consumption will be the order of the day, leading to heavy demand.

Gold is one of the best precious metals and we have been advocating buying gold at declines. We had started saying BUY Gold, when the price was $ 900 onwards. Now Gold is at $ 1628 for an ounce and still going strong.

The Oil Ministers decided in 2009 to trade oil in gold, yuan, yen and euro, as the Dollar was showing signs of weakness. This is one of the reasons why Gold is going up.

We have reports that billionaires like Soros and Bufett etc are taking up great positions in gold and buying mining companies.

It was observed that the Gold Price is inversely proportional to the Dollex, the USDX. Yesterday USDX was up by one point and gold declined from 1674 to 1645. Now it is at 1628 per ounce.

Jupiter represents Gold in Astrology. Now Jupiter in Aries is responsible for the secondary reaction happening in Gold. From a high of 1900 dollars, it is now at 1628. You can draw your own conclusions!
