LOAD REQUIREMENTS

The International building code requires that a guardrail withstands a minimum of 200 lb, applied tangentially to the top rail. However, the only factor that actually does not count is the type of railing, because, for the most parts railroads are build following common practices, and they are usually just OK. The main factor for code compliance is the quality of the installation. If one does not attach the railing properly, even if the railing is made of thick solid steel, it will not pass the 200 lb test. It does not make sense to build an iron railing that will probably need a force equal to 1000 lb just to slightly bend it and then leave it lose against the wall! But this is what happens most of the cases when a railing has failed.

TYPE OF WALLS AND THE PROPER ANCHORS FOR EACH OF THEM

There are several type of "walls" where railings are usually attached to. EXTERIOR BRICK WALL normally this type of wall has regular wood framing behind, and the brick is just attached against it. If you want to be over cautious, you may drill through the brick with a masonry bit, up until you reach the wood behind, and then pre-drilled the wood to drive a long enough 3/8 inch lag bolt into it. Outside wood framing always has a 1/2 inch OSB plywood behind the siding. However you do not want to attach your railroads to the plywood only, but to the real wood framing behind. You might get away installing the rails to the plywood only, but for sure, if the railroads are high traffic, they will fail. If the building inspector catches that, you will fail inspection. But not all the time, sometimes you could leave, in good conciseness, the rail with a weak joint (not lose) on the top, if you there is a post near the wall and its four floor anchors are well attached. Actually a good post attachment would waive the necessity of an upper anchor, your railing could be left free standing, and still pass the load test. If this is your case make sure the nut is tight enough and then seal it around with clear silicone to avoid moisture penetration. Self tapping screws with a neoprene washer is the best option. Screws are not so visible and provide a very strong joint, which is also waterproof. Way to go!

When installing the self tapping screws go slow with the drill, making sure it is NOT in hammer mode. If you go too fast it might kick you back and cause an injury. So be careful. Remember that at slow speed the drill has more torque, so you are not doing much more by speeding up too much. One thing to remember is that it is better if you clamp the two pieces together before drilling, and that this is the last step. Make sure everything is lined up and attached, and then install the joint screws.

    Failure to Yield to Incoming Traffic

    Failing to yield to traffic that has the right of way can be a costly mistake. In many driving situations there are instances where we must yield to vehicles that have been granted the right of way by signs or traffic lights.     How Long Does Hair Shed During Telogen Effluvium (TE)?

    I often write about surviving telogen effluvium, AGA, and hair loss of all kinds. Probably the most common emails that I get have to do with how long the shedding will last. People often ask if there is anyway to slow or stop the shedding, as this process is very difficult to cope with. I often hear comments like “how long will I have to deal with this shedding?” or “when will the shedding stop?” I’ll answer these questions and explain the answers in the following article.

    When The Shedding Will Stop Will Depend On What Type Of TE Or Hair Loss You Are Experiencing: The duration of the shedding depends on several things, but the most persuasive is what type of TE you have, or if you even have TE at all. If you have straightforward TE from pregnancy or stopping and starting new medications, you’ll likely only have to deal with this for a few months, if that. If the shedding is caused by a trigger like hormonal changes or diminishes, scalp or dermatological problems, or AGA / DHT, then the shedding may slow once you are able to address, remove, or slow the trigger.

    What If I Have CTE Or AGA? How Do I Know?: People often ask me how they can tell if they have real TE or something else like CTE (chronic shedding) or AGA (female patterned baldness caused by androgens and DHT.) A couple of things can help to pinpoint what type of loss you are experiencing.

    First, if you can pinpoint the cause, that will tell you a lot about what the expect. Second, if the loss is slowing after a few months, you likely have the garden variety effluvium. Third, if you have patterned loss that is more noticeable in areas like the top, crown, or temples, AGA is more likely. Finally, if you have loss that starts and stops or seems to get better and then get worse, then CTE is more likely because you keep hitting on or reigniting the trigger.     What You Can Do To Help Cope With Or Slow The Shedding: Since the shedding is often a time game or finding what works, I often tell people to focus on what they can – creating a healthy scalp and robust regrowth. The most effective way to do this is to get rid of any inflammation and to nourish and unclog your hair follicles. There are many safe, gentle alternatives that can accomplish this without making the loss worse. Tea tree oil, jojoba oil, rosemary, lavender or emu oil, (depending on what type of loss you are experiencing) are all good alternatives. The laser comb is also a nice choice because it’s non invasive, doesn’t affect your hormones, and really helps to get rid of DHT and stimulates your follicles at the same time.

    I know it’s very tempting to stop washing your hair as often when most of it ends up in your shower drain, but you shouldn’t. This will stifle your regrowth. Think of it this way. The shedding is not going to leave your net hair volume nearly as bad off if you’re quickly regrowing what you are losing with nice thick, healthy hair. But, if your regrowth is compromised or thin and sickly, the net loss is going to be much more noticeable.

    How to Test Electrical Ring Main Circuits

    The UK was the first and is now is probably the only country in the world which still uses the 30 amp ring system for wiring socket outlets in electrical installations. The ring main circuit has long been the subject of many a heated discussion between electrical experts, but as an electrician you'll no doubt need to test them in the course of your duties. Here is an overview of Ring Main inspection and testing procedures.

    Warning- Please note that this is a 'dead' test so the distribution board, consumer unit or circuit must be isolated from the electrical supply. To begin with you'll need to carry out a Safe Isolation Procedure and get permission to turn off the supply.

    Here's the testing procedure:

    Insulation Resistance

    Disconnect all appliances and accessories from the ring circuit and carry out isolation tests between the Line, Neutral and Earth CPC.

    End to End Ring Continuity Test

    Set your test meter to low resistance range and 'zero' the test leads. Measure the resistance of ring continuity of each of the live, neutral and earth conductor ring loops. Record these end to end statements for future reference and entering onto a test sheet. Note that where the earth conductors are smaller, the resistance will obviously be higher. For example for twin and earth cables 1.5mm will be 1.66 times higher than 2.5mm.

    Super Loop Test L & N

    Cross connect the live and neutral conductors from opposite ends of the ring and to form a super loop. If at first this sounds confusing, try drawing the live and neutral loops of a ring circuit on a piece of paper with the opposite ends connected. You'll see that it forms one big super loop.

    Test resistance between the ends you have just connected together. The reading taken between the super loop ends should be about half that of your previous continuity reading. You can then verify the ring main wiring and connections by going to each socket outlet and testing between live and neutral. Where the socket is on the ring and the connections are 'good', your readings should be within 0.05 of your original super loop reading at the distribution board.

    These readings are not normally recorded but will form the basis for your assessment of the ring main circuit connections.

    High readings could indicate that the socket is on a spur from the ring, that connections need tightening or that the socket is faulty giving a poor connection to the plug and needs replacing. Where the readings are not consistent this could indicate that there are cross connections and the ring circuit has been bridged.

    Super Loop Test L & E

    Cross connect the line and earth conductors from opposite ends of the ring and to form a super loop. Test between the two sets of ends you have just connected together. The resistance reading should be about half that of your previous continuity reading. You can then verify the ring main wiring and connections by measuring the resistance at each socket outlet as for Live and Neutral described previously. Testing between live and earth at the sockets also checks for correct polarity.
