Hernia Repair Surgery

A patient develops a hernia when one of his organs protrudes through the cavity in which it is enclosed. Several types of hernias are common, including the hiatal hernia and the iguinal hernia.

All corrective hernia surgeries proceed from the understanding that the torn muscle tissue has to be repaired and the protruding organ pushed back into place. There are, however, several ways in which this can be done, and all hernia repair procedures are divided up into two categories: tension suture repairs and tension free repairs.

Tension suture repairs are the older, more traditional, ways in which hernias are treated, and they involve stitching the muscle closed. These methods were, however, found to be ultimately unsatisfactory as they placed the muscles under an unacceptable level of stress.

The tension free repairs comprise closing the hole in the muscle tissue with a piece of surgical mesh, and there are three basic tension free repair strategies. Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive technique whereby the mesh is placed on top of the muscle defect, and, while the Lichtenstein Repair also places the mesh on top of the defect, the surgery is performed under a local anesthetic through a 4″ incision. The tension free mesh technique, however, uses a 2″ incision and places the mesh through the hole in the muscle tissue where it is able to repair the tear from the inside.

If no side effects develop, a patient can leave the hospital on the day of the surgery and will be able to return to normal life within a week or two of being discharged. Strenuous exercise is, however, not recommended during the recovery period. A hernia repair can cost anything from $6,000 to $14,000 depending on the exact procedure used as well as the procedure’s level of difficulty.

Outdoor Lighting – Create Wonderful Visual Effects with Illumination

Most present day homes use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for lighting purposes although there are a large number of homes that also use traditional tube lights and incandescent bulbs. In earlier days, candles and oil lamps were used for lighting purposes. Three popular methods of outdoor lighting are down lighting, up lighting and front lighting. Of all these three methods, down lighting is the most common one. In down lighting, light fixtures are recessed into the ceiling of a house or building. Up lighting is used in environments that require uniform general illumination and minimum amount of glare. A front lighting arrangement makes the subjects look flat with no visible shadows.

There are different forms of lightings like alcove, sconce and soffit. In alcove form, an indirect up lighting is provided into the area to be illuminated. A soffit is used for wall decoration purposes while a sconce is used for lighting the objects that are on the topside of a room. Different variants of light fixtures are available in the markets now days. While some fixtures are plain and simple, others may be some piece of art in them.

Most common types are accent, task and general lighting. Accent lighting is mainly decorative and is used to illuminate plants and other elements of landscapes. Task lighting is a concentrated form of lighting and is commonly used for reading & material inspection purposes. A general lighting is used for outdoor places like parking lots and pedestrian crossings that require less illumination. One should take measures to protect his lighting equipment from fire and other natural disasters. One should follow the specifications and installation instructions of manufacturers to avoid any accident during fixation of lighting equipment.

Creating a good lighting design requires complex planning. One has to take various factors into account while creating a design for a lighting appliance like energy requirement and its aesthetic impact on the surroundings. Complex lighting design may require elaborate mathematical modeling. Large areas with irregular floor plans may require special softwares for their illumination. These softwares generate a number of contour charts that show the effect of lighting on the area under consideration. Zonal Cavity Method is commonly used to calculate the effect of light reflected from the walls and ceiling of a room on the overall illumination of the room.

Proper lighting is a key element of home furnishings and interior designing. Outdoor lighting may be affected to a great extent due to various factors like lamp burnout, dirt accumulation on fixtures and aging of lamps. Lighting appliances are an integral part of any home decor course. One should make conscious efforts to optimize the use of electrical power in one's house. One should make maximum use of natural and sky lights in his rooms. These days, digital lighting are extensively used in motor vehicles. Such lighting is controlled by a computer. One can get a pattern of colors by the use of these lights. One should use quartz halogen lighting for outdoor illumination. One should follow the instructions of lighting equipment manufacturers while installing fixtures for outdoor lighting. Any deviation would leave a negative effect on the overall illumination of the area.

Nature Photography – Going the Extra Mile For a Great Photo

Nature photography classes have taught me a lot as a teacher. They have helped me to evaluate how much emphasis in nature photography should be on technology, and how much on creativity.

Half my time spent teaching is concentrated on the essential mechanics of good photography; aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and so on. The rest of the time is focused on understanding natural light, and the techniques of good composition.

I truly believe that a good photographer, no matter how good their camera may be, must have a good grasp of the basics. If you don’t understand the relationship between shutter speeds and movement effects, you won’t get the best results from your waterfall photos. If you don’t understand depth of field you won’t know how to capture real character in a wildlife photo.

However, the simple truth is that most of the time, especially in clear daylight situations, you can leave your camera on automatic and rely on it to do the job for you. I don’t encourage this, as the more experience you have with your manual settings, the better prepared you are to use them when the situation calls for it. But auto is a reliable option most of the time.

So, if your camera can take care of the technical aspects of your photography for you, what sets a good photographer apart from the rest? The answer is simple; their creativity, and their willingness to put in the extra effort for a great photo.

If you are prepared to go to the trouble to take your photos in the best possible light, you can improve your photography one hundred percent overnight…without doing one thing to the settings on your camera.

If you ask 100 people what is the best time of day for landscape photography, 95 of them will probably know the answer: early morning and late afternoon. This is when the sun is low in the sky and the light is soft and colourful. The fact is, people don’t need to be told when to take their photos; they just need to be prepared to put it into action. It is just too much trouble to wait until sunset, or stay overnight to be on location at sunset.

The great photographers are the ones who are prepared to make that extra effort. They may even stay several days, or return to the same location time after time, just to get their perfect shot.

So what sets a great photographer apart is not what they know. In relation to capturing the best light, they really don’t know anything that the rest of us don’t. The difference is that they have the level of commitment required to turn knowledge into results.

Good nature photography is about much more than just perfect lighting. There is also attention to detail, and creativity in composition. Once again, this is not rocket science. It often boils down to patience and how much effort you are prepared to make to get a result.

Let’s examine the approach of two hypothetical photographers.

The first photographer finds a nice location at the right time of day, snaps a couple of shots and then heads home for dinner. Later they look at the photos and notice some dead grass in the foreground, and a plane in the sky that spoils the natural look of the photo. This photographer is not happy with his photos and does exactly what most people do: he blames the camera.

The second photographer arrives at the same scene, at the same time of day. He looks carefully through the viewfinder and notices the dead grass in the foreground. Knowing this will spoil the shot, he finds a better location just a few metres away, where an old fence leads into the distance adding depth and interest to the image. He notices a plane in the sky and waits a few minutes until it is out of view. In the meantime, he sees some clouds drifting into the frame, and waits just a few minutes more until they are in a perfect place to fit the composition. Later he looks through over the photos and is deservedly happy with the result.

Which photographer do you want to be?

Are You a Glutton? Part 2

Gluttony is a condition of character that affects all of us and is known as one of the 7 "deadly sins" for a good reason. Giving it free reign over our food habits and choices can have a hugely detrimental effect on our health.

This is the second and final part to the article, "Are you a glutton?"

The once happily pumping heart muscle now has his veins and arteries taxed with plaque and blockage. The pre-diabetic pancreas is now encased in fat and can not properly function. The diaphragm becomes surrounded with a yellowish glob of fat that presses upwards, causing a shortness of breath as the diaphragm can not fully expand. "Help me", the body says, while the traitorous part of the brain who wants to experience over and over the desired feeling of fullness says, "Do not pay any attention". Gluttonous behavior results in a slow and sinister wasting of the body. It kills its host little by little. Like the happy green frog placed into the pot filled with tepid water heating up on the stove. He does not notice till it is much later that the sleepy, contentment he felt is now being replaced with alarm as the warm water has now become boiling. What about you? What is the temperature of YOUR WATER? Warm, a little hot?

Or are you starting to succumb to the boiling water? Well, the good news is that if you are reading this, then you are still alive and can still jump out of the pot. What is the answer? Another diet? Another pill? Another unused gym membership? If you can utilize these tools and make them work for you, then proceed! But if you have been trying all of the above and your habits in eating and your weight or health has not improved then you are missing something. And that something is as simple as … self control. Ooohh. Harsh word. But it is the only trait that will help you and protect you. It is a trait that is cultured and strengthened through attention and practice. It is the trait that has saved your life. Self Control is the barrier, the guard at the door.

Without self control, we would jump into traffic to retrieve a ball, drive our car too fast into oblivion, neglect studying for tests, not set the alarm clock and make it into work on time. Self control is not a trait we are born with. A new born baby has no sense of self control as any young parent can attest to. So, if this is the answer, the means to produce enough effort to help us basically deny our wants and address our needs, how do we go about adding more of this mental self control into our life? Our parents, our school system, our workplaces, our goals we set are all involved in the process of developing our own personal set of controls. We learned them through harsh consequences, we learned them through the reward system. One of the ways I recommend, to develop greater self control is to incorporate a martial art into your life. There are all kinds and styles available for all genders, ages, and fitness levels. It is a subject that needs to be investigated thoroughly by the participant as each style has something to offer but be better suited to your particular circumstances. Martial Arts encourages an incremental process of learning. It is this process that trains us to learn self control as we are taught various manners of moving our body in prescribed ways to effectively defend ourselves.

To name a few, there is Taekwondo, Kung fu, Karate styles, Juijitsu, Judo, Tai Chi and hundreds of others. I also have some further recommendations to implement immediately to combat a gluttonous predisposition. Hide, throw out, put away for now or just give them away, any books, magazines, or reference materials about food, recipes, or diets. No pretty pictures of sparkling beverages and tantalizing meats, brightly colored vegetables or mouthwatering candies and cookies are to be found on your coffee table, or in that magazine sitting dog-eared on your office desk. No more tuning into the food channels. Take off the magnets on your refrigerator that involve pictures of fruit, spreads or sprinkled donuts. Why would you want to have pictures that remind you of what you should not be focusing on? Even diet books and diet magazines are just portals of information geared to make you focus on food. More advice to follow. Never eat out of bag, box or container. Never again. Only eat off a plate or a bowl. Never eat while the television is on. Watch television later if you must. But here is the most important thing you can do for your goal of absence from too much food, from cultivating your gluttonous behavior …. Keep your hands and mind busy. Read a book, buy an electronic book, knit, crochet, draw, put a puzzle together, play with your child's Game-boy and then buy one for yourself. Develop a habit of engaging in an enjoyable hobby or distraction.

Even use these mind-distractors and hand-occupiers while you are watching TV. Again I must repeat. Never eat in front of the TV. I had an acquaintance who is 110 pounds overweight tell me that he keeps a bowl of plums or some type of fruit in a bowl on his desk at work, in case he feels hungry. He said this rather proudly as if he had come up with a great plan. I told him that for him, hunger was not bad. It would only be the times he felt hunger that he would be losing his weight. And that bowl of fruit was just a constant visual reminder of food. He would tell me that he wanted to lose weight, but then he would describe to me about the meal he had the other night and how "tender the meat was" and how he used "just a little oil" and how "delicious" everything was. I noticed that as he related all this to me that his demeanor was totally relaxed and a dreamy expression came over his face.

The druggie appeasement of food was his high point of life and was clearly pointed to his gluttonous character. The current avenue of his weight control was not working. Look around. Massive people. Massive health problems. Are you one of them? Are you a glutton? Can you get better? Can you learn the self control necessary to save yourself? Do you want to be saved? I will be cheering for you and I hope you will receive some of this information in this article seriously. If you do, combine your new views with additional health information such as those you can discover from my health improvement website to raise your level of awareness! I believe that you will see a difference in your life and that of your family.

Some Facts About Asbestos

While tracing the history of asbestos it was found that its usage dates back to 2000 years. The name 'asbestos' was first used by the Greeks, which meant 'inextinguishable'. Although the Greeks also noted the harmful effect of asbestos, yet they did not pay any heed to its dangers because according to them it had magical powers that had to be used to fulfill the daily purposes of life.

The Roman naturalist Pliny and the Greek geographer Strabo also noted the devastating effect of asbestos on human beings but they did not arrise any questions considering its several magical uses in their regular life.

Some Facts about Asbestos What is Asbestos? Asbestos is the term given to a collection of six naturally occurring minerals that are incombustible and separable into filaments. These six minerals are chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, anthophyllite, termolite and actinolite. Among these six asbestos minerals, the first three are abundantly used in manufacturing of industrial and commercial products.

Uses of Asbestos Asbestos was being used since ancient Greek times and its usage continued till 1700, but it was popularized after the Industrial Revolution. It was used in construction mainly in steel pipes, industries, steam pipes, hand held hair dryers to prevent over heating, household items and in several other industries for various purposes.

Versatility of Asbestos The reason for the popularity of asbestos was its power of resistance to electricity and its fire and heat proofing capacities. Being a fireproof or incombustible material, asbestos is imperfect to every weather effect. This high tensile strength and flexibility makes asbestos very versatile for use in various products and industries.

Diseases caused by Asbestos One of the deadliest diseases caused by asbestos is mesothelioma cancer. It has become a threat to human civilization causing pain, suffering and loss of thousands of lives. The mortality rate is so high that eight out of ten mesothelioma patients pass away even before the treatment starts. It is a deadly cancer caused mainly to those who are exposed to asbestos in some way.

The other deadly disease caused by asbestos is asbestosis, a serious form of lung illness. The main symptoms of asbestosis are short breath after exercise or exertion, dry prolonged cough, general malaise or feeling tired and wheezing.

Treatment of Diseases caused by Asbestos Being a form of cancer, all the traditional cancer treatments are applied to treat mesothelioma. Surgery for cutting out the affected part of the lungs, chemotherapy to attack the cancer cells; or radiation to kill the cancerous cells are the only treatments for mesothelioma cancer. However, newer and better modes of treatments are being worked out to help mesothelioma patients.

Diagnosis for asbestosis is necessary in its early stage as prolonged asbestosis can turn into mesothelioma cancer later in life. Regular intake of the prescribed medicine and check-up can help a lot. But the life span decreases on its own as the disease is diagnosed a long time after exposure to asbestos.

Legal Claims for Asbestosis and Mesothelioma
An asbestosis or mesothelioma legal claim can be filed on your behalf if your disease is caused by exposure to asbestos. An attorney will investigate how much asbestos containing material you were exposed to, who were the employers and what proper safety measures were taken for your health. This claim can be made against the construction company, the asbestos suppliers and even the individuals who were responsible to look after your health safety.

Why a Metal Building for Your Garage or Shop

Why on earth should you purchase a metal building for your home garage or workshop? With all of the options available to you, what makes a metal building your best buy?

If you are considering a new garage or shop, you should find the answer to these questions before you make your purchasing decision. The answers will help you in your decision and may just save you money for years to come!

Quality

First and foremost, the quality of a new building should be of utmost importance. Metal buildings offer huge benefits over other types of building materials.

All of the usual benefits of steel in buildings apply here. Steel has the highest strength to weight ratio of all building products. Metal building components do not warp, twist, crack, expand and shrink like wood. A metal building that is fabricated to be square and 'true' and when built that way, holds that way. No costly repairs here!

Steel is impermeable to termites and other rodents and does not support the growth of mold. Even kiln-dried framing lumber has a residual moisture content of about 12%.

Most metal building packages are fabricated in a manufacturing environment. The controlled environment and quality-control measures in place assure you of a very high quality product.

Safety

Steel buildings are non-combustible. This can be a very important factor depending on the building's use. You will want to check with insurance broker as well. Many offer good discounts in insurance premiums for non-combustible buildings. This item alone can make your metal building purchase worth while.

Metal buildings can be engineered to suit the worst climatic and seismic conditions. Your garage or shop building can be built to withstand gale-force winds, hurricanes and earthquakes with relatively little or no damage.

Lightning is not a problem either. In fact, a steel frame reduces the likelihood of explosions, secondary fires or personal injury because steel buildings have multiple conductive paths to the ground. It's no wonder that we have used steel skyscrapers for years providing safe offices and residences.

Green

Are you eco-friendly? Steel is considered a green building material for a number of reasons.

First of all, steel is 100% recyclable. Approximately 67% of the steel in metal framing components is recycled. For a 2,500 square foot house, it would take about 7 or 8 recycled automobiles while the same wood house would use up about 25 old-growth trees.

An average home would generate about 50 cubic feet of landfill waste using lumber. The same home would generate about 1.5 cubic feet of waste. And that waste is recyclable!

Building Types

There are a number of different types of metal building construction. Choosing the right building to suit your garage or shop building needs may save you money up-front as well as long term returns.

Structural steel framed buildings are usually only economic for the larger garage and shop buildings, or those that will have heavy loads like cranes added to them.

Metal stud framed buildings are an economic alternative to the wood pole barn type structures. These buildings are often more flexible in design than wood. They can be panelized in a manufacturing environment then shipped to the site for easy inspection. Metal studs can be insulated to suit your particular needs as well. Even the roof trusses can be constructed of metal framing.

Metal arch buildings have long been an economic solution for garages and shops. They are often supplied in do-it-yourself type kits. An experienced handy-man can erect these kits with little difficulty. Hanging things (cabinets etc.) from the wall can be difficult as the walls and roof of this type of structure are also the structure itself. Any penetration of the skin is a potential leak.

With all of the benefits of metal buildings – including the potential cost savings – it's no wonder that home-owners are purchasing these packages for their garages and workshops. Find out more about metal building kits at http://www.prefabmetalbuildingkits.com . With careful consideration and a little home-work, you can find the metal building that is perfect for your needs.

Settling Into a Pension Approach

Your pension approach is an expenditure for your foreseeable future but with tax relief from the present. This implicates that, if you are a basic-rate taxpayer, you pay £ 78 for every single £ 100 that you get in expenditure going into the approach – a pretty very good deal. (The essential rate of tax will fall to 20p from the pound from April 2008, that means that basic-rate taxpayers will think to put in £ 80 for every single £ 100 that goes into the approach.) Quite a few private pension plans, which includes stakeholder plans (they are pensions which fees are limited by UK government rules – nearly all employers are willing to offer you a single but they do notought to put any info engrossed for you personally) too as some work-based top-up schemes , generally generally known as Additional Voluntary Contributions or AVCs, let you opt for a wide selection of expenditure opportunities both primarily and soon after on and also enable low- or no-cost switching between expenditure alternatives from the approach.

Those with greater sums and a DIY (do it your self) mindset to expenditure can decide on a SIPP (self-invested private pension) where the owner receives to opt for what goes in. You possibly can begin a SIPP with anything from £ 5,000, even though £ 50,000 is really a additional typical minimum. Even so, on the downside, the fees might be high and if it all goes wrong, you've only your self to blame.

If you need to be a fewer activated pensions investor, appear at a life style approach, which almost all pensions firms now offer you. This sort of approach invests in riskier areas, including shares, when you're young and have time on your side. Soon after, as you get closer to retirement, the approach immediately moves you down the risk profile. A single way is to switch 20 per cent of your fund into safer bonds starting a contract previous to you retire. Then five years prior to you need to stop work, the fund moves all over again, bit by bit, into a money fund. You possibly can generally override a life style approach when you want.

Fostering of Property Previous to Profits

The roof over your brain is most likely your most monthly cost. And it's also likely to become your largest expenditure. So do not begrudge what you commit to it. From the long run, it need to build up to a worth it asset. (At the incredibly worst, it'll shelter you from the elements!)

Usually seem at what it really would pay every single month to rent a similar property balanced with purchasing it. Doing so is simpler nowdays thanks to the purchase to let boom, mainly because you possibly can discover rented properties on almost all avenue. If you are settling additional in mortgage fees than in rent, the surplus is your possibility fee to make gains soon after when you sell up and move somewhere smaller or to a less-pricey location. This makes it an expenditure. On the other hand, if you are settling much less in a mortgage than letting would fee, appear at the savings as one more location for potential expenditure money.

Confused About Where To Begin Getting Weight Loss Help?

With the wide variety of choices available when it comes to getting weight loss help, it is not surprising that many people wind up confused about which dieting and weight loss plan is right for them. Automatic patio awnings usually also come with a manual override feature in case of a power outage. or if the motor should stop performing.

From Farm to Factory: Assembly Line, Baby

As an active agent, you’re already working your farm – great. The question is whether you’re getting the most you can from it. Given the same number of prospective clients in a shared market, how do you maximize your farm’s output to get an edge on your competition? Short of outspending them or working 16 hour days, it’s all about the systems you have in place. Let’s explore how we can help you automate yourself out of a job and teach you to you operate a business.

Do You Run Your Business Like a Business?

So you’re an independent contractor… you don’t work for a brokerage and you don’t get a regular paycheck or a W-2 at the end of the year. It’s important to remember that as such, you’re running your own business (don’t make the mistake here of glazing that over). Most agents fail to really land that connection and even after years in the field, they’ll continue to treat their business more like a hobby. Sounds funny, sure. But see if any of these look familiar…

  • They work from day to day, awaiting inevitable encounters from familiar problems they don’t have the time to deal with
  • They have no set operational budgets (everything is on the fly and pain or opportunity-based)
  • They have no established and maintained step-by-step client handling procedures
  • They couldn’t tell you what the day after tomorrow looks like and experience over-promised schedule snafus

In short, they never systematized the work they needed to perform at the daily level. And as a result, these agents spend more time working on individual tasks than they need to and worse, they find themselves repeatedly breaking away from these tasks in order to jump on an opportunity or to put out a fire. If you’re looking for a way to tighten your processes and gain time to reign in troublesome outlier issues, then a good way to start is to develop an assembly line mentality. Don’t worry… you can keep all prospect and client engagements personal… we’re talking about operational processes.

How to Develop an Assembly Line Mentality

Assembly lines require consistency and so too do stable and predictable businesses. While you cannot predict which gear in your daily operation is going to get clogged next week, you can include buffer time in advance to address random issues that pop up later. This is a key to business planning… plan for what you do not know. The good news is that you’re likely doing this already without even knowing it.

If you set yourself a 25-minute limit for a 30-minute webinar or call, just so that you could have 5 minutes for a Q&A session at the end… then you’re already working with an assembly line mentality. Think about it, you’re applying a general operational procedure (“budget for a 5 minute Q&A”)… to a type of action (“for any call”)… for a type of audience (“to interested leads”). In this, you’re proactively setting procedures or systems in place… ahead of time.

As you develop these sorts of systems, you’ll pass or fail them in practice. You’ll tweak them to fit new marketing challenges, new skill sets you’ve picked up or staff changes to the team. And as these begin to form solid guidelines for predictable success, you’ll begin to trust these systems of yours and gain a broader view of what happens further down the line… what’s likely to happen next week, next month or next season.

Remember that the most efficient and predictable businesses, those that have the most flexibility to adapt to opportunities, know their operations down to a coffee lid. This level of precision predictability takes time and effort, but you can start with the Top of Funnel tasks. Here are some ideas for finding systems in your daily routine…

Create a Daily Task List

You can start just by creating a daily task list. It’s simple and will highlight any repetitive tasks that you nevertheless need to get done on a daily basis. The trick here is to list out all of the things you find yourself doing every day for your business. Then, form action groups that allow you to approach the tasks in single-sitting sessions. Here are some examples…

  • Marketing: If you’re like most agents, you’re spending at least some portion of each day marketing your brand and services. Maybe there are leads you need to check in with, or you may be preparing a direct mail campaign or even knocking on doors. Break these into task types. For instance, the lead check-ins and direct mail campaign prep may require you to be on the phone and near your computer, whereas the door-knocking will require you to be out and about. While all three fall under more familiar business task type (aka “Marketing”), in reality, there are two task types here: those you can do in the office and those that require you to be out of the office.
  • Client Service: Obviously, email is a powerful tool, but it’s also an entire office in itself. Unfortunately, this is where most agents will get sucked into disarray. You can start to streamline this mess by identifying the client actions you need to take. For instance, those you need to give a status report to, any showing feedback you need to obtain or closing transactions that need your attention. Break these into response action types. You may be doing this already with filters and folders. Take another look and see if the systems you have in place match your daily routines these days. Maybe there was a shift in target clients that requires a similar shift in communication strategy or scheduling.
  • Education: A business that isn’t learning is likely a business that isn’t growing. It’s a competitive market out there and if you’re not staying up on techniques that you should be doing, then at least learn what the competition working your farm is doing. So it’ll be important to include some education into your routine. This probably isn’t something you’ll do every day, but certainly each week, you’ll meet with your team, go over recent inquiries, regional trends, market stats and so on. This is education too… and it can be systematized. On your calendar, mark off two 30-minute blocks each week to study up on a topic (ideally with your team or peers in the office). Doesn’t matter what it is, so long as it’s related to your business and that you do it.
  • Planning: This one is often overlooked and finds itself bleeding into the off-hours… leave time to plan your activities for the following day, because inevitably, it’s going to change – it’s okay, you planned for things to change. Of course, you’ll want to break tomorrow’s tasks into groups you can manage in one sitting, so focus on the way in which you can address them.

Start Documenting Your Business Processes

As an independent business owner, you need to do all you can to reduce repetitive, manual tasks. If you’ve got a team, then they’ll need to know how to work within the framework of your new factory approach. Similarly… you’re going to need refreshers here and there (at least until it becomes second-nature). This is where an “SOP” or Standard Operating Procedure manual (aka documentation) comes into play.

First, make sure you’ve got each system down pat and that you’re using any available technology to the fullest to save time and eliminate time-consuming labor. Automate tasks like lead generation which can be done more effectively using new technologies. Then, start to step-by-step document the easiest way to complete all the things on your todo list. Try to limit each task to 10, single sentence bullets.

Document everything, even the mundane things like making coffee in the morning. Your staff may not need to know how to make the coffee, but establishing your expectations on how long it should or shouldn’t take, can begin to set guidelines and establish relative predictability that every person appreciates in an otherwise chaotic environment.

The more you document, the better. Start with one, simple task in a Word doc, Google doc, etc. Write down 5-10 steps to accomplish it, then name the document something like “2018 SOP – Making Coffee in 15 minutes flat” (notice the buffer… plan on delays). The key to good documentation is consistency, especially in naming, as it makes it easier for future staff to search for specific tasks. “How does the new boss like their coffee?” – there’s a doc for that. Reasonably predictable? Check… next…

When you don’t need to keep all that information in your head, you’ll free up brain space and brainpower and be able to reallocate them to relationships and opportunities that will help you grow your business. Less focus on the mundane and maintain, more focus on opportunity.

Mount Photos in a Scrapbook

I've always compared mounting photos to framing photos. When you mount a photo for your scrapbook, you really are framing it.

There are quite a few options for mounting photos both in color choices and also in shape. I love using multiple colors. You can use contrasting colors or you can use several shades of the same color.

I also will sometimes use a patterned paper to mount my photo on and then a solid color cardstock to put the mounted pattern paper on. If you choose your colors right, this can create a very neat effect.

I have also used three or four colors of card stock to mount one photo. Often I'll do this on a title page, where I am only using one photo. Again, depending on your color choices, this has a very pretty look to it.

If you are using squares to mount your photos, try turning the square to make it diamond shaped. You can also use several diamonds, all in various colors to mount your photos.

For a more abstract look, try using three colors, all cut into squares and then turn them each a different way, all on top of each other. You end up with a mount of several points.

There are a few ways to turn these mounting squares into other shapes. I love the cutting tools that Creative Memories sells. They sell them in many different shapes. You simply trace the shape with a blade and you've got your mount. There is also a system called Coluzzle. This brand can be bought at most craft stores or through Leaving Prints distributors. Again, it's a plastic frame that you run a blade around to create your shape.

Once you begin playing with the many shapes, you can create all kinds of effects for your photo mounting. You can mount a square inside a larger circle and then put your photo on the square. You can put a small heart inside a large heart, and then mount your photo.

Have fun mounting your photos with various colors and shapes. Create unique albums and unique pages by using your own imagination and creativity to decide how you'll mount your photos.

Hammertoe Surgery

Hammertoe surgery may be a treatment option if you have a severe hammertoe. A hammertoe is a contracture of the toe due to a muscle imbalance between the tendons on the top of the toe and the tendons on the bottom of the toe. There are two types of hammertoes, a flexible hammertoe and a rigid hammertoe.

Flexible hammertoes are less serious because they can be diagnosed and treated while still in the developmental stage. Flexible hammertoes are still moveable at the joint.

Rigid hammertoes are more serious and can be seen in patients with severe arthritis. In rigid hammertoes the tendons have become tight and the joint misaligned and immobile making surgery the course of treatment.

With hammertoe surgery there are several types of surgical options depending on the location and extent of the problem. The first option is arthroplasty. With arthroplasty, a portion of the joint is removed and the toe is straightened.

The second surgical option is fusion. With fusion surgery, the cartilage between the two toe bones is removed and the bones are fused to form one longer bone.

The third surgical treatment option is to have an implant put in the toe. With this surgery a portion of the bone is removed and replaced with an implant.

After hammertoe surgery some swelling, stiffness and limited mobility can be expected for as long as eight to twelve weeks. To help reduce swelling it is important to keep the foot elevated and apply ice. Most physicians will also recommend that a splint or surgical shoe be worn for the first two or three weeks after surgery. This will help to protect the foot and help to dispense body weight allowing the body to heel.

Some potential complications from hammertoe surgery are infection, swelling and possibly deviation of the toe. If a lot of bone is removed the toe may be a bit floppy. This will last for about seven weeks but generally will not be permanent.

Hammertoe surgery is one of the most successful procedures for surgeons today. Over 300,000 hammertoe surgeries are performed each year with few complications. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities without significant interference.
