The jab saw is a good and useful addition to the collection of Plastering Tools. Its blade is hard and tempered, making it durable. At the same time the handle consists of high impact plastic and the inserts are soft touch to give a comfortable and controlled grip. There is a large smooth end pad in order to facilitate pushing and twisting the blade through plasterboard.

For decorative finishes there are some trowels which are ready to use. The blades are made of stainless steel and they feature rounded corners and have polished radius edges. For decorative plasters like Venetian or decorative plasters this ensures a consistent finish and the effort is also not much, in spite of working on a fine Italian plaster. The trapezoid stainless steel trowel is ideal for application of Venetian plasters, Marmorino and veneer plasters.

Marquise Diamonds – Full of History

If you're looking for a diamond that is versatile, dynamic, and is steeped in history, then a Marquise-cut diamond could be perfect for you. Here we discover all the particulars about this diamond and how it has become a much-loved cut by many.

The Beginning of the Marquise-Cut Diamond

Back in the 1400's, diamonds became increasingly popular gems used in royal jewelery and as a result various cuts of the precious stone were developed over the years. The creation of the Marquise (pronounced Mar-KEE) is all thanks to King Louis XV of France. He asked for the royal jeweler to create a cut of diamond that was based on the shape of Marchioness Madame de Pompadour's mouth, his mistress at the time. Jewelers will also often refer to this particular cut as a "Navette Cut."

Based on the Shape of a Mouth?

While the shape of the Marquise was created to imitate the shape of a woman's mouth, a more detailed description could be used. If you can picture an oval where each end has been pinched to a point, that would better depict the true design of the Marquise or Navette-Cut diamond.

All in the Detail

The ideal amount of facets in a Marquise Cut Diamond is 56 and the length to width ratio should be 2: 1. This particular cut of diamond is often found to be less expensive than its round cut compared to it maximizes carat weight giving the perception of a much larger looking gem. Because of the various angles of the Marquise, the stone can be breathtaking all on its own or can look equally amazing with accompanying stones either side.

Flexibility in Marquise

Many women love the Marquise; not only for its stunning beauty, but also for the many ways you can have the stone set. Because of the shape of the Marquise, ladies can decide to have the stone lay across the finger width ways, parallel to the knuckle or length ways to make the wearer's fingers look long and slender. The only concern when setting the Marquise cut should be the fragile pointed ends – without protecting the points they could easily chip and diminish the beauty of this unique cut. To avoid chipping, be sure to have the claws in the setting surrounding the points as much as possible. One of the most famous Marquise engagement rings was that of Catherine Zeta Jones. Michael Douglas proposed with a breathtaking antique 10 carat Marquise diamond engagement ring, needless to say her answer was "yes!"

Sir Winston Churchill – The Painter

It was the summer of 1927. King George V was in Scotland at his northern home, Balmoral Castle. Staying with him for a few days was his Finance Minister (or "Chancellor of the Exchequer"). While most visitors enjoyed the outdoor life of the Scottish countryside, during this visit the minister spent much of his time indoors with canvas, oils and brushes.

The king had an idea. He was sponsoring a charity auction in the vicinity of the castle, and was on the lookout for good items for the sale. Now he knew where he could get something that would raise a fair price. "Minister, how would you like to donate your painting to the local charity?" Although by no means an authoritarian monarch, a request from the king was as good as a command, and duly the painting was sold to the highest bidder, raising a sum equivalent to around $ 10,000 today.

Shortly after the Chancellor joked in a letter to the king's private secretary that maybe he should sell some more paintings to raise funds to reduce the national debt. More than sixty years later the story was included in a book about her father's paintings by the youngest daughter of Sir Winston Churchill.

Churchill's paintings (more than five hundred of them over a forty year period) were suited to far more than charity auctions. From Paris galleries to Royal Academy exhibitions in London his works were given honored place – frequently submitted and displayed under pseudonyms to avoid any favouritism.

How good was he? Perhaps we can assess that by the fact that one leading expert almost succeeded in having a Churchill painting excluded from the judging of a prominent amateur competition because, he said, although it was anonymous it was so easily identifiable as having been painted by a professional!

Churchill first took up his hobby only at the age of forty, when he was out of office with more time on his hands, and needed some form of therapeutic relaxation. From then onwards, almost wherever he went, either on private or public business, his artist's kit went with him. In the 1950s an exhibition of more than fifty of his works toured the world. Today there still exist hundreds of his impressions of places he visited, many of them now on display at Chartwell Manor, his former country home which is in the care of the National Trust and open to the public.

Our web site the-churchill-file.co.uk explores the career of this remarkably talented human being and provides links to books on varied aspects of Churchill's life and work, including many available from our own stock.

How to Choose a Long Lasting Shovel Or Spade

Most people, myself included, buy a $ 10 shovel at a big home improvement store. Six months later, the shove is dull, rusted and digging becomes a chore. Selecting the right shovel can make your Garden Chores almost fun. Weather you are a home improvement expert, handyman, master gardener, or professional, take some time, do some research, buy the best and buy once.

First some Definitions- this is serous business after all.

Shovel: Tool used for digging in medium to soft ground. Egypt soil, sand, gravel, clay or small rock moving.

Spade: Tool used for digging in harder ground. Because it is narrower than a shovel it is not as good at moving or transferring materials as a shovel.

Blade: This is the metal end of the tool. Does the cutting or moving. Narrower the blade the tougher digging conditions the shovel can handle, but the more "trips" you will have to make. Cheap shovels are stamped out of sheet metal. Good shovels are welded steel.

Step: Your foot goes here. A great shovel has a large step, as most of us are gardening in crocs, clogs, flip flops or even barefoot.

Shaft: This is the bar that connects the handle (if there is one) to the blade and step.

Handle: There are two kinds of handles on most shovels. The first is as simple as a rubber or plastic grip around the shaft. The second is a bar perpendicular to the shaft. Some are shaped but the best shovels and spades have the handle on a wishbone (D-Handle) that connotes them to the shovel or spade shaft.

Coating: This is what keeps the shovel from rusting and keeps your shovel or spade looking great. Remember that digging is a very abrasive activity and coatings will not last forever. Paint and clear coat temporary, Powder coating last as long long time.

Warranty: This is one of the most important parts. Will the manufacturer stand behind their product? If not, go elsewhere.

There are only about 4 shovel types that you are likely to need:

Long Handle Digging Shovel All around shovel, go anywhere, do anything. Every one needs this type of shovel in their Garden Shed. The pointed tip cuts into medium hard to soft ground and makes quick work of even the most stubborn roots. If you only buy one shovel- get this one. The straight shaft and handle are great for digging without having to use your feet. The important things to look for in this shovel is a strong all metal shaft welded to the step and the blade. A large step is a must have in this type of shovel. As will all shovels- else is stainless ($$$) it must be powder covered. Paint or clear coatings are not enough! While it looks counter intuitive, the heaver a shovel, the easier it is to use if you are digging.

D-Handle Digging Shovel Similar to the Long Handle Digging Shovel, This shovels D-Handle is best when you have to dig a hole then transfer or throw it. Digging, preparing plant holes, and removing sod and soil for a walkway or garden bed makes this kind of shove shine. As with Long Handle Digging shovel, durable coating, metal shaft, strong welds and a large step are crucial.

D-Handle Transfer Style Garden Shovel This is the square bladed transfer shove that has probably frustrated you in the past. It has a very specific task and is not a digging shove in most soils. Use it to move already loosened soil, dirt, compost, sand or pea gravel and you will fall in love with the Transfer Garden Shovel. Because this type of shovel is not really a digging shovel, you will likely want a D-Handle and not a Straight shaft handle. A long, square-edge, flat blade makes this shovel ideal for fine, straight edging, cutting through soil and grass. A large step is not really important here but a durable coating and metal shafts are always a good idea. This is the only shovel where a lot of weight is not a really good thing.

D-Handle Transplanting Spade Often referred to as a sharpshooter shovel, this work horse of a is ideal for deep, precising digging, transplanting, and loosening very hard soil and packed or crushed rock. Big step, strong welds, metal shaft and a thick blade are very important with this shovel. When the going gets tough, the tough get this shovel. Strangely, this shovel only comes in a D-Handle but it seems to work.

Recap of the Most important features:

Metal shaft

Powdered Coated shaft, blade and step

Welded steel not stamped sheet metal

Steel not stainless steel- too expensive and not worth it.

D-handle if you are going to be moving material or straight shaft if you are digging- it's a sharp shooter.

Big step without it is a transfer shovel.

Lastly, a great Warranty. Most shovel manufactures worth their salt, will replace a broken shovel free of charge.

Natural Ways To Firm Up Facial Skin

As we age, our facial skin begins to lose its elasticity and starts to sag and droop. The lack of elasticity as we age is due to our skin's reduced collagen production as we age. Other factors that can be taken into consideration include too much sun exposure, smoking and stress, but even if you've avoided those habits, your age will eventually begin to show.

If you're experiencing this phenomenon, and are looking for ways to look younger without resorting to such drastic measures as a face lift or other cosmetic surgery, here are a few ways you can firm up your face naturally, without going under the knife.

• Drink your H2O – The most important thing to remember when trying to firm skin is that hydration is key. Dehydrated skin looks drier and looser than hydrated skin. By drinking plenty of water, you help improve your skin's elasticity by keeping cells hydrated, which in turn keeps them looking healthy and plumper, keeping wrinkles and fine lines at bay.

• Moisturize – While you're keeping your body hydrated by drinking your eight glasses per day, you should also stay hydrated topically through the help of an anti aging moisturizer. Moisturizers should be applied every time you use a facial cleanser to keep skin from drying out. Natural beauty products do not contain chemicals, which can be drying, and the ingredients that they contain are found in nature to help keep cells moist and plumped. For the most tone-improving options, look for anti aging skin care products that contain vitamins E and A, as well as antioxidants like fruit acids. To improve moisture greatly, look for shea butter in your moisturizer's ingredients.

• Natural face masks – One of the ways you can naturally tighten your face is to make your own masks with ingredients found in your kitchen. Ingredients such as egg whites or mashed bananas make great standalone masks for firming the epidermis. Apply them to your face and allow them to sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then gently wash away the mask and any impurities it takes with it.

• Exercise – How you treat your body has effects on how your skin appears! When you get in your cardio every week (you should get 20 minutes worth of heart-pumping exercise at least three times a week for optimum health), you boost your circulation, which allows more blood oxygen to reach your skin, giving it the appearance of being toned. In addition to normal exercise, you can consider doing facial exercise to keep skin springy; taking a few minutes per day to exercise your face through various movements may help tone the facial muscles, giving the appearance of tighter skin.

With these natural tips, you'll have firmer, younger looking skin in no time!

The Insurance Agency Elevator Pitch

An insurance agency elevator pitch is a succinct summary used to quickly describe your insurance agency, products and services. It should include your unique agency value proposition, and must be delivered within the time span of an elevator ride, in about 30 to 60 seconds. This can be much harder than many agents might initially think, and should be scripted, vetted, rehearsed, and timed. The elevator pitch is a truly important and fundamental component of your insurance agency marketing and insurance agency prospecting efforts.

A great exercise for agents or agency executives is to ask a variety of people in your agency to tell you their version of the agency elevator pitch. Don’t be surprised if the pitch varies dramatically from person to person. Does the pitch adequately describe your value proposition? Does it highlight the products, services and solutions which best showcase your agency expertise? Did the litany of pitches even sound remotely alike?

Some years ago, I met with the executive team and senior managers of a small company, which at that time employed less than 100 people. I asked each of the dozen people I met to provide me with an elevator pitch about their organization. Some people were taken completely by surprise. Others sat and thought, and struggled to articulate an elevator pitch, or even describe their value proposition. The pitches I heard varied drastically.

Elevator pitches are an important digital asset for every agency. They should be vetted, scripted, practiced, and preached. I call it an asset, as it is a fundamental component in the marketing of any agency. And every member of an insurance agency, from agent to receptionist, to customer service representative to executive team should be able to promptly and professionally deliver their insurance agency elevator pitch.

Your sales and marketing efforts are built upon a well articulated and easily repeatable value proposition, which should be a microcosm of your elevator pitch. If you cannot communicate your value proposition in less than 30 seconds, or stumble when trying to express it, it’s time to write it down, rehearse it and communicate your value proposition with everyone in your agency. Once that is done, turn it into a 30 to 60 second elevator pitch. Practice makes perfect, try repeating both of these in monthly management meetings and sales meetings, and it’s important to note that your elevator pitch might vary based on your target niches (P&C versus Group Benefits for example).

Here are a few best practices when it comes to your insurance elevator pitch:

  • Be succinct – 30 seconds is much better than 60 seconds (you may not have 60 seconds!)
  • Create empathy – For example, “We work exclusively with New York contractors” or “we work with trucking companies with 5 to 50 power units” or we specialize in groups between 50 and 150 participating employees”
  • Verticalize – a vertical pitch is easier to differentiate, allowing you to better articulate your unique pitch. “We insure restaurants addressing their unique risks.”
  • Be different – “save money” and “great service’ is something everyone says. What are your top 3, unique differentiators?
  • Transfer enthusiasm! You have to believe it for them to believe it.
  • Close with a call to action – what’s the next step for your prospect

Let’s review a sample pitch, which would run 30 to 40 seconds depending upon cadence:

We’ve been helping trucking companies with their insurance and risk related needs for over 50 years. Everyone at our agency is a trucking fleet expert, in areas including hazmat, specialty cargo, certificate fulfillment, HOS, group health, and owner operator services. Because of our access to extensive markets and deep industry expertise, we provide creative coverages at the best possible rates, and help protect our clients’ bottom line. We know trucking insurance is one of your most important expenditures, and our creative coverage approach will help meet your unique requirements. Can we set up a 15 minute meeting to discuss your specific needs?

Your elevator pitch might be designed to include industry jargon to convince prospects of your deep expertise, it might highlight your most important products and services, your top differentiators, or your service centric approach. Regardless of what your final elevator pitch includes, practice makes perfect, it should roll off your tongue effortlessly. Remember, 30 to 60 seconds is all you get before your most important prospect walks out of the elevator, and your opportunity may be gone forever.

How Do Vibration Plates Work and What Are the Advantages?

A new technique to develop muscle and enhance the strength of the bones is in vogue and uses vibration plates in an innovative way to achieve this. So, how does it operate?

Basically, these vibration plates as the name suggests, are made up of vibrating and moving plates. When an individual takes a standing or sitting position on them, he is required to use the energy generated by the movement of these vibration plates and complete his workout. The moving vibration plates lead to swift muscle tightening events of close to fifty times every second and this helps in lending a total workout to the entire body. This workout there before helps you burn calories, builds flexibility, boosts the oxygen content within cells and speeds up efficient blood circulation. The mechanical energy is caused due to the subtle drop of the vibration plates by two to four meters. This drop is a gentle one and not harmful to the body.

Here's how it actually works. Suppose you are in a standing position on the vibrating plate with slightly bent knees, the drop of the platform leads to the immediate stretching of your muscle and as a natural reaction, your body contracts the muscle. However, the time that it takes for the body to do this is utilized by the vibrating plate to go back to its original position and your body has to respond again. This cycle is repeated pretty quickly about 50 times per second and that is how the swift contractions are brought about. You can thus experience close to 3000 such contracts in a minute and that corresponds to the effect of about 3000 knee bends. Doing this without the aid of such vibrating plates is obviously not possible and this involuntary body reaction of contracting the muscles progressively leads to the tautness of all the muscles in the body over a period of time. This compares very well with the 45% of muscle contractions achieved during traditional exercise and that is why it is becoming very popular.

The difference between the traditional training and vibration plate training is in the manner your body reacts. In the former, it responds to the extra resistance thought about by the weights, while in the latter, it is reacting to the forced and quick pressure caused by the vibrating plates. Since the speed is far greater, the body is also composed to make the adjustments faster and you will be able to achieve results much more quickly. The best part of this is that you need not spend a great deal of time and can achieve more with less.

To summarize, there are five solid reasons as to why you should opt for this kind of a workout:

a) It is a revolutionary new technique to develop muscle and strengthen the bones
b) You can burn calories, achieve flexibility in your muscles and improve blood circulation in a reliably short period of time.
c) The contracts induced in the muscles make them taut and toned
d) It is a safe and quick method to get results that you desire when compared to conventional exercising.
e) As compared to the conventional work outs, the reaction of the body is swifter and this makes you feel more vivid and healthy.

5 Reason to Do Planks Daily

By now, you have heard of or at least attempted the plank exercise. It is one of the most universal exercises known to man. The plank is also one of the best to use daily for developing and maintaining a strong core. Here are 5 bonus benefits to doing planks daily.

1. Mental Clarity and Focus

Yes! You will become mentally stronger as you add planks to your daily routine. It's hard to hold a plank and think about a lot of other things. The pain from holding your body off the ground takes 100 percent of your mental attention. This allows you to clear your head of unwanted thoughts, stress from work, what to cook for dinner, and the list goes on. Even if you held a plank for 1 min every day, that's 352 minutes of mental therapy a year.

2. Lengthen your Muscles

Since most people find themselves sitting for lengthy periods of time due to work or lifestyle, the plank is a great exercise to lengthen your muscles from sitting. Tight hip flexors, rounded shoulders, and low back problems are all linked to sitting too much. Holding a plank will put your body in a position that extends the hips, promotes shoulder stability, and it can produce a stronger lower back. These reasons are more than enough to add planks to your life daily.

3. Location, Location, Location

While the plank can be done by anyone, it can also be done anywhere. There are no restrictions and this allows you to be free. In the office, at the park, out in nature, at the gym, in your garage, or wherever you choose. I recall doing a plank on the Roberto Clemente bridge in Pittsburgh. By the way, it landed me a commercial. Take your plank wherever you go!

4. Anxiety Calm

Anxiety impacts millions of people each day, and while medication is often prescribed, there are natural ways to calm the body. Yes planks are an anti-anxiety natural remedy. Exercise serves as a distraction when you are under stress, and planks are one of the best to help calm the body. Get into a plank position and hold it for as long as you can, then lie down on the floor with your arms extended out in front of you. close your eyes and breath deep for about 30 seconds, repeat the plank and the rest position until the anxiety is gone.

5. The Roof and Foundation

You would not attempt to build a house starting with the roof first. As crazy as this sounds, people do it daily in the fitness world. We spend hours on cardio and lifting weights, but very little time on our core. Your core is your foundation! Do not put the roof on first, instead lay a strong foundation to build upon. By doing so, less injuries may occur, post improvements, movement is enhanced, and your lifestyle is free.

Refinishing Your Iron Umbrella Stand Back To Beautiful

When you go shopping for an iron umbrella stand it is helpful if you know what kind of style you would like. There are so many on the market and they verge from the cheap and cheerful mass produced cast iron versions right through to the antique wrought iron ones made in the Victorian age.

Wrought iron pieces were once the sign of wealth and were very popular in the gardens and mansions of the elite. Talented blacksmiths spent weeks hand crafting these pieces and working with the iron until they had achieved a beautiful result. You can find some of these fantastic pieces at real bargain prices as often they have not been looked after. Covered in rust, they can look like too much work to bring back to their natural beauty. Often people will decide to buy a new iron umbrella stand rather than the antique.

But it doesn’t actually take that much work. You simply need a drill with the wire brush attachment, some sandpaper, a smaller hand held wire brush and a lot of patience. When you have taken the initial rust off you will need some primer, a rust inhibitor and finally some paint. You begin by removing the rust which you can do with the drill so long as you take things very slowly. You will need to use the sandpaper and hand held brush on the more intricate engravings. Once you have removed the rust and have achieved a smooth surface you will need to paint the piece with a rust inhibitor. An iron umbrella stand does attract rust as you tend to either use it outdoors or place wet umbrellas in it so protecting it in this way is very important. Then just prime the piece and apply a coat of paint and you will own a beautiful object.

The most common mistake that people make is that they do not research adequately and rush into starting and end up carrying out a poor quality job. Or they hurry too much and do not take the time to do the job properly, and do not follow basic setouts before cutting. Another typical mistake is that they use blunt drill bits, saw blades and poor tools. Also, amateurs fail to use thread lock glue on the bolts, which is required for a sturdy staircase.

Giving Your Stair Banister the Holiday Treatment

Chances are you decorate your entry door and windows over the holidays. If you have a fireplace mantle, you most certainly take advantage of hanging your stockings and showing off your Christmas collectibles. So do not give up the opportunity to decorate one of the grandest architectural features of a home: the stair banister! If you get it, flaunt it!

Measure your staircase from top to bottom and plan your materials accordingly. If you are draping ribbon, you'll need to use at least double the length of the banister. The same goes for lights and garland. It's always better to have more than less, so a little excess can simply be used somewhere else in your home!

Instead of the usual evergreen garland and red ribbon or bows, try a bright citrus color like orange or a regal color such as fuchsia. Layer a translucent ribbon in the same shade to add depth. A great evergreen alternative is thick wire ribbon draped in loops up the banister. Add large pinecones (we always seem to forget these great accents!) And berry, floral or holly sprays at the top of the loops to make it festive yet natural looking.

Everyone places wreaths on their doors, but what about wreaths attached side by side on the banister? What a great way to showcase them! You can get more creative with the wreath accents then accents on a garland and create a banister that is simply stunning.

Sometimes simple equals elegant. One way to add more floral accent to a simple evergreen garland is to attach white, pink or red silk poinsettias. These gorgeous and traditional Christmas plants have often been evacuated to a pot or silk arrangement. Not anymore! Add large bows and berry / pearl sprays in coordinating colors at the top and bottom of the staircase to complete the creation.

Another great take on the Christmas tree is to gather large evergreen boughs and stagger them up the banister. Then take large round ornaments on satin ribbons and hang them from the boughs at different lengths.

Frontal Baldness Treatment

Frontal baldness is a type of baldness that commonly occurs in men. This type of baldness happens when the hair begins to fall out of the front of the scalp, near the forehead.

Frontal baldness is also called a receding hairline. This phrase was coined because the hair loss appeared as though the hair was sliding off towards the back of the head.

Sometimes frontal baldness in men starts on both sides of the forehead, rather than in the center of the scalp. In these cases, the hairline typically recedes back further and further, usually reaching the crown of the head.

Thankfully, there are several treatments that can be used for frontal balding. Some of these treatments are prescription strength, while others can be found over the counter in your local pharmacy.

Propecia is one of the most common frontal baldness treatments. Many doctors prescribe it to help slow down the loss of hair in patients who have frontal baldness. Propecia comes in the form of a pill and is generally prescribed as a once-daily tablet to be taken with food or water.

Such treatments, like Propecia, have a fairly decent success rate. If your doctor diagnoses your frontal baldness problem early in the game, the Propecia can be extremely helpful in slowing down your hair loss before it gets too bad. Even more exciting is the fact that Propecia may even help new hair to re-grow where the old hair has already fallen out.

The biggest problem with frontal baldness treatments is that people expect a quick turnaround on their condition. This is not a reasonable expectation, though. Once you begin any type of frontal baldness treatment, you should expect to remain committed to that treatment. You should also expect to put in much time and effort before you will begin to see any results.
