Carrying tremendous benefits for the facial hair and skin, here are the best beard oils discussed in detail.

Board Games of the World – A History

Today we have a wonderful heritage of board games from across the world. People have been inventing and playing board games for millennia. These games have evolved over the ages and exist today as an incredible store of information and fun for all. One of the oldest games is the ancient Egyptian game of Senet which dates back to about 3500 BC, and an example of a game invented recently is Pente, was designed by Gary Gabrel in 1978.

Many games reflect the competitive activities of their time such as races or the tactics and strategy of warfare. This can be seen in games such as Backgammon or Chess. Backgammon evolved from the ancient Roman game of Tabula, a race game between two players.

The game of Chess has its origins in northern India around 3000 BC as the game Chaturanga. This is a Sanskrit name meaning four parts and reflect to the division of a platoon in an Indian army in Vedic times into four parts, an elephant, a chariot, three horsemen and five foot soldiers. Chaturanga was introduced into Persia as the game Shatranj and from there spread westwards through Islamic expansion to Spain (Ajedrez) and then eventually became the modern game of Chess. Ethiopian chess called Centerej is also derived from Shatranj. Chaturanga also spread eastwards and evolved to become Chinese chess XiangQi and Japanese chess Shogi. Other eastern variants include Thai chess Makruk and Burmese chess Sittuyin.

Chess has many interesting variants including Farmer's Chess or Gala which still played in some farming villages in Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Gala is played on a 10 x 10 board which has four 4 x 4 sections called castles and each player has two Kings or Galas. Circular Byzantine Chess is played on a 16 x 4 circular board.

Another interesting predecessor of modern international Chess is Courier Chess. This game, also called Kurierspiel, is a southern German variant played on a 8 x 12 board. Lucan Van Leyden the great Dutch renaissance painter and engraver of Leiden cave us the famous painting, The Chess Players in 1508 at the age of fourteen. This painting depicts a game of Courier. This painting formed part of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin and in 1945 narrowly escaped destruction during bombs raids before being moved to Merkers salt mine near Erfurt and recovery by General Pattons Third Army. The village of Strobeck near Halberstadt in the Hartz Mountains possesses a Courier board presented to the village in 1651 by the Elector-Prince Frederick William of Brandenburg. The game is named for one of the more powerful pieces, the Courier.

Mancala is these days the name given to a family of board games played through Africa, the Caribbean, India and south-east Asia. These games are usually played on wooden boards with two, three or four rows of holes carved into them. Sometimes these games are played in a set of holes scooped in the ground. The counters used for these games include stones, marbles, seeds, beans, cowrie shells or small lumps of dung. Mancala is an Arabic word meaning to transfer and comes from the way the player sow the counters into the holes. Mancala games have the most diverse set of names of any board game; there are hundreds of different names for the game of Mancala. The game originated in Africa and spread through Bantu expansion and then to south-east Asia by Arab traders and to the Caribbean by the slave trade. Examples of these names include Warri (Caribbean), Oware (Ghana), Maruba (South Africa), Tsoro (Zimbabwe), Gabata (Ethiopia), Layli Goobalay (Somalia), Pallanguli (Sri Lanka) and Chongkak (Malaysia).

There are many other fascinating games that can provide hours of entertainment or form the basis for social studies projects to bring to life the games, customs and language of other cultures. Other interesting games include Backgammon, Bashne, Brax, Bizingo, Bul, Checkers, Drafts, Fanorona, Go, Konane, Ming Mang, Mu Torere, Reversi, Shashki, Zamma and Zohn Ahl.

Taipei Taiwan Travel Guide for First Timers

If you are planning a trip to Taiwan for the first time, there are several areas worth visiting to make the most of your trip. While there are multiple beautiful, historical areas, the following are my personal favorites for Taipei travel. Please feel free to use this as a sort of personal Taipei travel guide when planning your Taipei vacation.

  • Taipei 101

We start our Taipei tour at Taipei 101. This is a skyscraper located in the Xinyi District. In 2004, it was listed as the world's tallest building at 1,671 feet. It held that title for 6 years until the Burj Khalifa in Dubai eclipsed Taipei 101 in 2010. The tower boasts 101 stories and features an outdoor observation deck on the 91st floor like the Empire State Building in New York City where you can see beautiful views of the surrounding areas.

The bottom five floors of Taipei 101 feature a luxury shopping mall with upscale shops such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton. On the 88th floor indoor observatory, you can see the 730-ton mass damper, basically a giant ball that acts like a pendulum to counteract the buildings sway during high winds. Without this damper, people on high floors can actually suffer from motion sickness from the constant swaying of the building! Taipei 101 is a city icon that is visible for miles across the city. Every New Year's, Taipei 101 contracts tens of thousands of visitors to see its spectacular fireworks display.

  • Ximending Shopping

If you are into shopping, you can not go wrong with Ximending. This is the shopping area in the Wanhua district of Taipei and is considered to be the fashion capital of Taiwan. On weekends, Ximending streets are closed to traffic and becomes a pedestrian shopping mall. The area is popular with street performers of all types and, because it is a hotspot, you can catch celebrations hosting small outdoor concerts, album launches, and other events.

Ximending is also famous for its "Theater Street" where there is a concentration of several movie along Wuchang Street. For history buffs, though, the most famous theater in the district is the Red House Theater which was built in 1908 during Japanese occupation and is still an operational theater with regular performances.

  • Yangmingshan National Park

If beautiful sights are what you look forward to when traveling, then I can not recommend Yangmingshan enough. It is the largest natural park in Taipei. Yangmingshan is great for hiking and has numerous tracks that can last an entire day or just a couple of hours. Popular trails include Seven Stars Peak which will take you to the highest peak in Taipei at 1120 meters (3600 feet) or see the stunning waterfall of the Juansi Waterfall Trail.

Each February through March, Yangmingshan is the site of the Yangmingshan Flower Festival when several varieties of flowers such as azaleas, camellias, and especially cherry blossoms reach their peak bloom. Every evening of the festival, cherry blossom trees are illuminated for a particular romantic sight. Visitors can also have lunch and dinner at one of many restaurants such as The Top or Grass Mountain Chateau for spectacular vistas of Taipei below.

Between the beauty of the cherry blossoms and the views of the city, Yangmingshan is a well-known romantic spot for lovers all over Taipei. From April to May, when calla lilies reach full bloom, you can pick your own lily flowers for only a few dollars at one of several flower farms.

Lastly, do not miss out on Yangming Shuwu, also known as Yangming Villa, the beautiful summer retreat of the late president Chiang Kai-shek. Yangming Villa house and gardens are maintained as they were when occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Chiang. The house is a two-story traditional Chinese home, with reception rooms and offices on the first floor and the Chiang's personal residence on the second floor where their paintings and personal photographs are still displayed. The gardens are especially beautiful in the Spring when the flowers are in bloom. As a bit of trivia, it's been noted that several bushes are planed in bunches of five – to symbolize the "5-star" rank of General Chiang.

  • National Palace Museum

Next, we find ourselves at the National Palace Museum which opened in 1965. If you love history, this is the place to be! National Palace Museum has a humongous collection of 700,000 permanent exhibits of Chinese Imperial history and art that spans over 2000 years plus prehistoric Chinese artifacts and artwork that dates to the Neolithic era, or better known as the "Stone Age".

The most popular item in its collection is the Jadeite Cabbage. Carved during the 19th century, it is a piece of jadeite that has been shaped to resemble a head of Chinese garbage and has a locust and a grasshopper camouflaged in its leaves. Legend says the sculpture is a metaphor for female fertility, with the white cage stalk representing purity, the green leaves of the cage representing fertility, and the insects representing children.

  • Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

Another historically significant landmark on our trek to learn about the history of Taiwan is the Chiang Kia-shek Memorial Hall. This is a national monument that was built in honor of former Republic of China President Chiang Kia-shek. The memorial marks the geographical and cultural center of Taipei. It is the most visited attraction by foreign tourists. The pagoda style memorial hall has a presidential library and museum on the ground level.

The main hall features a large, canned statue of Chiang Kai-shek, much like the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC The memorial hall and its surrounding Liberty Square plaza encompasses 60 acres and includes many ponds and garden spaces. The plaza also houses two of Taipei's performance art buildings, the National Theater and the National Concert Hall.

  • Beitou Hot Springs and Public Library

My favorite place to visit while in Taiwan is an area called Beitou. Beitou is a mountainous district north of Taipei City and is most known for its hot springs and its magnificent public library. The mineral waters from the many natural geothermal vents in Beitou are famous for their healing and therapeutic properties. An entire industry of hot springs bathhouses and hotels have sprung up in Beitou offering aroma therapy, massages, and hydrotherapy. There are a lot of places where tourists can soak their feet in the hot springs stream. Be sure to visit the Hot Springs Museum. When it was built in 1913, it was the largest public bathhouse in Asia at that time. Today, the museum offers a glimpse at its bathhouse facilities and Beitou's history.

Next, visit the Beitou public library. Its wooden structure that fits seamlessly into its Beitou Park setting. Through use of eco-friendly features and design, the library is Taiwan's first "green" building. The library opened in 2006 and was built to reduce the usage of water and electricity. To do this, architects used large windows to allowing in natural light and a solar panel roof to provide the electricity needed for operation. Also, the library collects rain water to be stored and used to flush its toilets.

  • Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf

Our final stopping point is Tamsui. Tamsui is located on the western tip of Taipei and our favorite place was the Fisherman's Wharf. We learned that not only do the restaurants that dot the Fisherman's Wharf boardwalk provide the freshest seafood available, it also provides breathtaking sunset views. Fisherman's Wharf still functions as a harbor for local fishermen and they proudly offer harbor for 150 vessels! Our favorite walk is across the "Lover's Bridge" pedestrian bridge, named as such because it opened on Valentine's Day 2003.

Its architecture resembles a sailing ship's masts. It was about a 3-minute walk across the bridge, which at sunset is magnificent. Lover's Bridge is also a great place to catch the annual fireworks show and concert that the city hosts each year to celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day (which occurs in August and not February 14th). Another way to experience Tamsui is to take a ferry from the Tamsui Ferry Pier and disembark at the Fisherman's Wharf. The ferry is a cheap way to see terrific views of the Tamsui waterfront. A one-way fare costs only $ 2 USD and takes only about 15 minutes.

Although our Taiwan vacation seemed to have been over in the blink of an eye, it was amazing! While there is so much more to see, we feel we made the most of our travels in Taipei. I hope that your trip proves to be just as educational and encompassing as ours.

Getting More Performance Out of Your Computer With Overclocking

How do you keep up with the newest computer technology? The cost of purchasing a new Computer Processing Unit (CPU) is quite high and it seems that with new applications there is a constantly growing need for more memory and more computer speed. It often seems that just as a new CPU is introduced it is already becoming obsolese. There is a solution, however, for increasing your computer's processing capabilities and it is not to purchase a new one every 6 months.

Rather, many people choose to overclock the CPUs that they already have-which is a much more cost-effective option in most cases. Clocking refers to the speed at which a computer processes things and is expressed in the number of clock cycles per minute. Overclocking is a means of increasing that number thereby giving added power and efficiency to all of your computer's operations.

This can make a huge difference in your computer's ability to effectively and quickly run games and video-heavy applications. Video editing, in particular, will benefit greatly from overclocking. It is generally agreed that if you are able to increase the speed of your computer by only 10% that you will not really notice any appreciable change in the computer performance. However, you should be able to increase the speed up to 900% with proper overclocking.

When you are considering overclocking your computer you will need to get some professional advice on how to do it correctly in order to avoid damaging your computer components and your data. You may choose to work on increasing the clocking of your central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM) or graphics card. If you are not properly instructed in how to correctly overclock your computer, a variety of problems can result. For example, because you are running your computer with additional clock cycles, it is possible to overheat the unit.

You will need to utilize a mechanism for dealing with the extra heat to avoid damage to your computer components. You may wish to use a high-powered fan system, as this is the easiest to install but there are other options available. You may also use a water-cooling or thermodynamic cooling system, which are both very effective though potentially more expensive. Getting a book on overclocking will help you to get the most performance out of your computer, while minimizing such problems.

Another issue that you need to be aware of is that overclocking can create problems with system stability. Because you are operating the system outside of the manufacturer's suggested operating conditions, incompatibility problems can lead to bugs or errors. While some of these might be minor, some can be serious enough to compromise your computer system. Other instability problems may cause data loss, which again underscores the importance of obtaining guidance in overclocking techniques. Overclocking is a great, cost-effective way to maximize the effectiveness of your computer and keep it up to date without investing in a new CPU.

Techniques on Painting and Painting Tips

The following techniques on painting should help you to create beautiful artwork. I suggest that you practice on something other than your final painting. A pad of canvas paper works great for practice space. Yes, you will make mistakes and paintings that you simply are not happy with. The goal of this article is to give you some techniques on painting so that you can make fewer of those mistakes and that you will love all of your paintings! You'll find as you practice just how easy it is to make images using acrylic paints and a brush.

Tips for painting trees

When painting trees and tree branches, I first use a round brush to paint in the main trunk; then I use a smaller brush to add branches and finally a script liner to add the smallest branches. Some of the branches should overlap each other. If you are adding leaves or foliage, do not stress over the branches because many of them will be covered up anyways. Always remember that you are painting the "indication" of items in a painting. So when it comes to branches, just paint the indication of them!

To paint pine trees, use a fan brush. Start by holding the fan brush vertically to dab in the trunk of the tree. One reason that I do this is so that I have a nice vertical point to base my tree on. Then use the flat side of the fan brush to dab in branches. The branches do not need to be even or symmetrical and will actually look unreal if they are too perfect.

Other techniques on painting nature

To paint rocks, start with a solid under-painting. Purples, blues, and some burnt sienna or browns work well. Round the tops of the rocks and keep the bases flat. Now with a dirty white color, paint over some of the under-painting. Let some of the dark show through. You can add just a tiny touch of orange or yellows for highlights as well.

Painting birds requires nothing more than a small amount of paint on a small detail brush and then small, v-shaped objects. Because these birds are often added as finishing detail to the background, the birds themselves do not require much detail at all. They can be made using whatever blend of colors complements the picture you are painting

For dew or rain drops, with a color slightly lighter than the petal or leaf, paint an oval. This will be the center of the drop. With a color slightly darker than the petal or leaf, paint a half moon in the top portion of the oval and a half moon under the oval. With pure white add just a touch of highlight on the top of the oval. On the drops that are just about to drip, do not paint the bottom oval. With pure white, pull down a couple tiny little rays of light.

When painting grass, under-paint the area where you will have the grass in a darker shade of green. Fill your brush with the green paint and use upward brush strokes. Use your No. 10 or No. 6 bristle brush. Add individual blades of grass in a lighter green shade (mix green with white or yellow to attain your desired color) and use a thinner brush or script brush to paint in blades of grass using upward strokes.

To add shadows: whenever you are painting a picture, even if there is no sun or light source represented in the painting, you need to consider what direction the light would be coming from. The surfaces of the objects in your paintings that would be hit by the light should be lighter, while the parts of the object in shadow should be darker.

These are just a few techniques on painting and painting tips that may help you develop wonderful artwork. I hope your paintings benefit from it.

The Right Carpet Cleaning Method Can Help You Save Money And Avoid Replacing Your Carpet

Carpet cleaning methods are not all the same. In fact, there are many different ways to clean various types of carpet. What many people do not understand is that carpet fibers are not all made the same, so certain types of carpet will require a different type of cleaning method. Certain cleansers may also be harmful for some carpet fibers while they work wonders for other types. It is important to complete preliminary research before having just any carpet cleaning company come to a home and clean the carpet with whatever method they feel like using without regard to what is best for the carpet.

Having a carpet professionally cleaned is by far the best way to clean it. However, if the cleaning method utilized is detrimental to the lifespan of the carpet, then it basically serves no purpose. This type of mistake can cost you a lot of money and maybe might even require you to replace your own carpet.

To keep informed, it is probably a good idea to learn about a few of the different carpet cleaning methods and how they work. Here are a few different carpet cleaning methods:

1. Shampooing a Carpet – Typically this seems to be the least effective method on any carpet. What occurs during a carpet shampooing is that formulated detergents are applied directly to the carpet and then the professional carpet cleaners will use a machine that agitates the cleanser. Then they will use a vacuum to extract the cleanser and make the carpet look very clean. The detergents used are formulated to make the carpet seem bright and smell nice. However, it does little more any caked on dirt deep down in the pad of the carpet. So if the main purpose of a carpet cleaning for a home is to make it look nice, maybe for a special occasion where a lot of people will be walking around so the carpet will need to be cleaned again anyway, shampooing can be the right choice. However, for health and wellness reasons, it is typically not the top choice.

2. Dry Carpet Cleaning – Most people recommend the dry cleaning method over any other. It is certainly helpful since there is little to no down time since the carpet will not need to dry for a long period of time as is necessary with other methods. Most of the time, using a special cleaning powder completes the process. It is sprinkled all over the carpet and it will automatically start attracting dirt. After it has stayed on the carpet an appropriate amount of time to absorb, it is then sucked up by a vacuum, leaving the carpet almost as good as new. A few carpet cleaning companies have made modifications to this method with different cleansers, such as an oxygenated cleanser. This method works well too, because although it may make the carpet wet just briefly, the oxygenated bubbles help lift dirt out of the base of the carpet, allowing it to be cleaned up even more effectively.

3. Foam Carpet Cleaning – This method is also very useful. It basically takes a little bit of the shampoo method and then combines it with the dry cleaning method. A cleansing foam and a small amount of water are applied to the carpet. The cleansing foam is also designed to attract dirt dust and harmful fibers like the powder in a dry cleaning method does. It works its way through the carpet and then the foam, along with all the dirt and dust particles it has collected are extracted from the carpet. This method works best of tougher carpet due to the nature of the foam as well as the vacuum.

4. Steam Carpet Cleaning – Steam carpet cleaning is probably one of the most well known cleaning methods and is also used often. It does have its disadvantages though because it uses an awful lot of water. When the water soaks deep down into the pad of the carpet, it can damage it so severely that the carpet may need to be replaced. However, if steam cleaning is done properly, and not too frequently, it can be effective. It is also known as "Hot water extraction" and basically it works by having a very powerful machine put a hot water and cleanser solution deep down into the carpet. Then the machine will extract the cleanser with a powerful suction. All of this will most likely get the most dirt out of the carpet, however, it may cause the carpet damage over time. It also means the carpet will be wet for a while, so do not use this method as a quick fix, since there is nothing quick about it.

5. Bonnet Carpet Cleaning – This method is mostly used for commercial buildings due to the amount of carpet inside of them. It is not meant to be incredibly effective, since commercial buildings experience so much traffic anyway. Basically this method will keep the carpets looking fresh and clean, even though some dirt and dust may still be lurking under the surface. A chemical detergent is applied to the carpet and then a rotary machine is equipped with an absorbent pad and then worked across the carpet.

So it is clear that not all carpet cleaning methods are the same. Now that the different methods are clearly outlined, it’s time to figure out which one will work best in your own home. Choose wisely, as different methods will affect different types of carpet in various ways.

Difference Between Interior Decorator and Interior Designer

When it comes to home improvements, you often hear the terms interior decorator or interior designer. Usually these terms are interchanged, but did you know these two actually different? Let us learn and differentiate the two, should you be interested to pursue a career in either one of them.

First let us look at what an interior designer does. They are the creative professionals who work on the structural aspect of a house. They need to make designs, sketches, plans under strict safety codes and regulations. But prior to this, an interior designer is required to take classes to get at least a diploma, better yet a bachelor's degree or even proceed for masters. After that, they are still subjected to licensing exams, which would allow them to work especially in certain states. Some internal designers who get enough education and experience can also proceed to work as certified architects.

An interior decorator on the other hand does not require that much formal training and a license in order to work. Their training demands are less rigorous. Some decorators are self-taught, as long as they have the right aesthetics to beautify a space, while others can opt to take short training programs or an associate's degree in a community college.

The nature of their work also varies in that an interior decorator is concerned mainly on the appearance of a space. This would include things like what colors the walls should be, what drapes would complete it, how many throw pillows to include, or should you be placing a carpet in the area. They can even change the floors or moldings on the ceiling, but they can not change any standing structure. Just as their title imply, they only make decorative alterations and improvements.

Interior designers work more closely with architects, although designers can not alter or move load-bearing structures, they can change the non-load bearing fixtures in a space. To do this, they would need a design, which can range from a sketch to a plan which he can also render in 3D. They also work with other elements such as lighting, doors, or windows. It is also their job to see to it that a design falls within safety regulations.

A designer's concern is more about the total appearance of an area, including its architectural elements, while a decorator is limited only on good arrangements for a better living space.

If an interior decorator selects the kind of furniture to place in a room, the interior designer goes steps further because they know how to design, select materials and make furniture. Another thing is that an interior designer focuses on one area, while a decorator can work with various spaces.

These differences make it clear that an interior designer and interior decorator are two different professions. Although they are in the same ballpark, but they both play different games.

Solar Shower Bag – Top 5 Features to Consider

Shopping for a solar shower bag for your next camping trip? These are some of the easiest and most economic camping showers, so they're definitely a good choice in many situations. Simply fill the bag with water, set it in the sun to warm up, and hang it up when you're ready to use it. Nothing could be easier!

Choosing the right solar shower for your needs, though, can be a little more difficult than this. Although they may all look a lot similar on the surface, there are some things that set apart the higher-quality models from their lower-quality counterparts. Since they're so affordable anyway, it's a wise idea to spend a couple of extra bucks to get a shower with most of these five features:

1. Durable Materials & Construction
The first thing to look for when you're checking out a bag style camping shower is the materials it's made from. You want a shower that's made from durable, heavy-duty plastic-type materials, although you can find a few eco-friendly models that are PVC free. You'll also want a shower with double stitching that keeps the seams tight for many camping trips to come. Shopping online? Check out camping shower reviews to find the shower that most lives up to this must-have feature.

2. Heavy-Duty Hanging Handle
You definitely want to be able to hang your solar shower bag, and you'd be surprised at how much they weigh when they're full. For this reason, you definitely want one that has a heavy-duty hanging handle. Some have a hanging handle that's separate from the filling and carrying handle, which is nice. The handle for filling is nearer to the opening, so you have more control over the bag, but the handle for hanging is longer and a bit more versatile.

3. Twist On Cap
Some of the cheaper solar shower bags have push-on caps on the fill spout, but you're really best off paying for one with a twist-on cap. It's a minor adjustment that can make a major difference in how easy your shower is to use. The twist-on cap is much more secure and will stay on and maintain its seal more easily if you lean your bag against a tree to warm up in the sun.

4. Easy Control Spout
There are different types of spouts and shower heads on these showers, but you definitely want to check out the reviews to see which ones are easiest to use. Most popular are the twist-down kind, which give you more control over your water pressure when you're taking a shower.

5. Extra Insulation
The cheapest solar shower bag will just be made of thick plastic that's darkly colored to attract and hold in more light and heat. However, if you want a truly warm shower at the end of a long day of hiking, you're better off paying for a model with special insulation, which means your bag will heat up more quickly and will hold heat more effectively, giving you a warm shower even after sundown.

3 Major Factors To Quality Arthritis Home Remedies

Determining the Quality

Have you tried to sort through the masses of injured arthritis home remedies on the internet? Have you ever surprised what makes a remedy effective and how we can distinguish the good ones from the bad? Well, it all boils down to a few key factors that we can apply to any new remedy we would like to try.

At first glance, there are a few questions we need to ask ourselves when trying out any new arthritis home remedies. Does it reduce inflation? And if so, how does it? Does it provide nutrients to aid in rebuilding process of lost connective tissue due to arthritis? Does it prevent arthritis from occurring in other joints of my body? Or could it help me lose weight to prevent the extra strain on weight barring joints affected by arthritis (if that is a factor)?

There are a few ways your arthritis home remedies can reduce inflammation in your body. Creating alkalinity to reduce pollution is a good start. Alkaline remedies can also have a number of other amazing health benefits.

Alkalizing Arthritis Home Remedies

When we consume alkaline foods, drinks or other remedies, we create an alkaline pH balance within our body. When our body is in an alkaline state, it is much harder for it to create inflammation, so we can reduce our joint pain and the progress of the disease simply by consuming foods or drinks on the high side of the pH scale. Alkaline arthritis home remedies must have a pH higher than seven, or contain substances that create a pH higher than seven.

The majority of easy to make arthritis home remedies are drink concoctions made up of a combination of alkalizing anti-oxidants. The most common remedies I see recommended are simple drinks with added alkaline vitamins such as a glass of plain water with a slice of lemon or lime.

You may be thinking … Are not lemons and limes acidic? Yes, they are acidic by nature, but they contain vitamins such as vitamin C that has the ability to create an alkalizing effect on the body once absorbed. The same thing can be said for the majority of citrus fruits.

These two simple remedies serve as a triple threat to arthritis. They alkaline, hydrate and detoxify, which brings me to another key factor to creating your own arthritis home remedies.

Anti-oxidants for Arthritis Home Remedies

There is a growing theory that low amounts of dietary anti-oxidants can cause and contribute to the development and progress of arthritis. It makes sense when you understand the oxidative damage that can be caused by a low intake of anti-oxidants. Luckily, incorporating anti-oxidant rich foods can drastically reduce oxidative damage on our body and be easy and delicious.

There are many drinks and snacks we can whip up at home that can provide us with a hefty dose of anti-oxidants. The majority of vitamins are detoxifying on the body; as long as you are intaking naturally sour vitamins and not synthetic vitamins.

This is not to say that all vitamin supplements are synthetic. Some are natural and some are synthetic. If you can not tell the difference, just make sure to buy your vitamins from a health food store and not a drug store.

Berry or vegetable mixes are among my favorite arthritis home remedies. I know that right off the bat these do not sounds overly interesting, but as I said, a good arthritis home remedy can be as simple as a glass of water with lemon or lime.

Berries can provide a strong dose of anti-oxidants with little effort. You can whip up a berry smoothie with only a handful of blueberries, three or so strawberries and maybe even a half a banana for a bit more flavor.

This one berry smoothie can provide three out of the five keys factors to great arthritis home remedies.

Fitness Tech and Training Q and A w / Team USA Strength and Conditioning Coach Rob Schwartz

I recently was given the opportunity to interview Rob Schwartz, a Team USA Strength & Conditioning Coach for Acrobat & Combat Sports. Rob currently works with Olympic athletes competitiveness in gymnastics, boxing, tae kwon do, judo, fencing, wrestling, synchronized swimming and diving. I wanted to pick his brain and gain some insight into how sports fitness technologies (heart rate, calorie intake, calories burned, sleep monitoring, distance and time tracking, VO2 recording, total vertical gained, etc.) are being utilized in Olympic athlete training and how Mr. Schwartz foresees consumer adoption of similar technologies in the future.

Q. Living in Denver and have previously toured the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, I remember the amount of gadgets and devices monitoring and tracking athlete progress in training. Could you explain the type of fitness technologies that are currently being utilized by your athlete's and how big of a role they play in your daily workout preparation?

A. For daily training activities we mainly use video feedback, both in the weightroom and the practice setting. In Strength and Conditioning we are always trying to gauge our athlete's state of preparedness, so we measure power outputs using Tendo units and force plates; this gives us feedback on how intensely we can train each athlete on a given day. At pre-determined times of the year the Sports Dietician tests athletes blood lactate levels during "live" practices to evaluate the physiological challenges they face in competition. We've even had some Wrestler's get their blood lactate tested immediately following actual matches. We are currently developing an app for athlete's phones to monitor nutritional, psychological, training and recovery status. This is a short list; we have many other modes of technology we use as well.

Q. It seems as if Olympians have been using technology in their training programs long before the recent consumer craze, would you say that many of today's fitness gadgets are a result from what has been tested and proven in the Olympic arena?

A. Not that I am aware of, when training world class athletes for Olympic competition we simply do not have the time to field test technologies that have not been tested and proven in the field. We will receive some emerging technology from companies such as Nike and Samsung, but are confident when they hit our desk they have been proven effective.

Q. Do you believe emerging fitness and health applications and gadgets will improve our nation's health outcomes and help citizens become more informed and active participants in their personal health?

A. I hope so; it mainly depends on the person and their goals. If the consumer is serious about getting in shape, I suggest they do their research and ensure that they are purchasing equipment from reputable companies that are proven in the market.

Q. One last question, any basic tips for those looking to begin personal strength and conditioning training?

A. I would start by joining your local 24 hour fitness and getting some personal training sessions. There is nothing better than an experienced trainer to provide feedback and steps for improvement. It is not recommended to surf the Internet for training advice or tips as there is no professional feedback and the information you are receiving may not be credible or suitable for your personal goals.

I am also a firm believer in video feedback for athletes, as with a current world champion boxer that I train when the fight is over the first thing we do on our plane flight home is review video on our smart phone and begin preparation for the next fight.

To learn more about the United States Olympic Training Center or to plan a tour visit them at TeamUSA.org and possibly rub elbows with America's premier Olympic athletes and coaches.

Roofing Flashings – Why Size Does Matter

Lead has been used as a roof flashing since Roman times and is still an excellent choice today where a durable flashing material is required. Unlike some other metal flashings it is highly resistant to corrosion and has stood the test of time. It is extremely malleable, allowing it to be formed into complex shapes. A well installed lead roof flashing can last in excess of 70 years.

However, the material requires a great deal of skill to achieve correct results. In this article I would like to discuss some of the common mistakes made during installation. I have repaired hundreds of lead roofing flashings where the fault can be traced back to the initial installation. This is not to blame the roofer that installed the flashing. The fact is information on the thermal properties of lead has only become widely available in recent times.

Thermal movement

The biggest cause of failure in lead sheet flashings is caused by thermal movement. This is due to the Coefficient of thermal expansion. Simply stated the lead expands in volume as the temperature increases. In a roofing situation the temperature variations can be wide. The cycle of strong sunlight followed by cloud cover means the lead is constantly moving. This constant expansion and contracting of the roofing material will eventually cause fractures or splits in the flashing.

Width

Fortunately, there are a few measures we can take to minimize the damage caused by thermal movement. Size strictly matters. Care must be taken to ensure the correct grade of lead is used for each situation. Lead sheet comes in rolls graded by the width. Between 1.3 to 3.5mm are the most common. The smaller widths are used for roof soakers and the heavier codes used for parapet and box gutters. When you purchase your lead from your roofing supplier tell them what you want it for. They will advise you of the correct grade for your application. Do not scrimp on materials. The thicker grades are more expensive but essential if you want to avoid roof leaks.

Length

The length of the flashing size is of paramount importance. Roofing flashings that are cut too long will deteriorate faster. Expansion and contracting is greater in larger sheets. Thus the lead will split faster. As a rule of thumb you should keep all your cuts down to 1.5 meters in length, or 4.9 feet. In summary, ensure you have the correct grade lead for the area you wish to flash and keep all your cuts under 1.5 meters in length.
