Your Guide to an Efficient Filing System

Your Guide to Filing

An efficient filing system has become critical, but still, more often than not, filing systems are accepted without consideration to WHAT is being stored, WHY it's been stored, WHERE and HOW it's been stored. You need to ensure resources are not wasted by replacing your filing system just for replacement sake; it may well be that your current filing system will meet your required criteria by adopting different soft folder and indexing formats.

Many filing organizations will recommend replacing your current system with space efficient filtering systems without consideration to the filing process.

Filing Facts

The freedom of Information Act and the Data Protection Act has made a huge impact on the way records are stored.

Certain types of records have to be stored by law for certain periods of time.

The amount of paper and records stored by organizations is increasing every year.

Misplaced or lost records cost many organizations a substantial amount of money through lost time looking for them. Some types of records will also incur an organization a heavy fine if the record can not be produced on demand.

Clear indexing and identifiable records will speed up the retrieval process for when the file is needed – not when it is too late.

An ineffective filing system will take up more floor space costing the organization more money through floor space rates.

An efficient filing system will save time, space and money making your organization run much more effectively, leading to greater success.

Filing Audit

If you want to improve your filing efficiency you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of your current filing system. The questions below are a good list of questions that once answered will outline specific areas that need attention.

The Records

o How are your records stored? (Lever Arch, Foolscap file)
o What is the volume of records in linear meters
o Are there any duplicates or copies? If so what for?

Indexing

o How effective is your indexing?
o What do you like or dislike about your indexing?
o Is misfiling a common occurrence?

File Storage

o How effective is the storage system?
o What do you like or dislike about it?
o What are the present floor space costs?

Record Access

o How frequently are records retrieved from the system?
o How many people use the filing system?
o Do the records need to be secure?
o Are records returned accurately and on time?

Record Tracking

o Are the records needed for filing Audits?
o How do you keep track of your records?
o Does your tracking system work?

Evaluating your system

The answers to the above should enable you to evaluate:

o Records which are not needed could be archived or destroyed
o Records needing consolidation
o Any indexing improvements
o Effectiveness of the system

Creating an efficient filing system

o Avoid complicated indexing methods
o Avoid handwritten indexes
o Before opening a new record make sure its unique.
o When indexing a record think of the first identifying reference that comes to mind
o Be specific with titles, never use general or miscellaneous.
o Allocate a unique reference ID.
o All correspondence in the file should be dated or marked for reference
o Separate archive from live records

Further details on file creation refer to RMS 1.1 Standard written by the National Archives.

Tracking Records

What happens to your records when they are away from the system?

Case studies show that traditional tracking methods have become inefficient and unreliable An electronic system using a barcode or RFID tags will improve file tracking.

Locating and Controlling Records must be efficient. Record users should be able to file and retrieve records quickly and efficiently.

Tracking records in a filing system should:

o Assist with accurate retrieval of records
o Ensure access of records to staff authorized to do so
o Assist with record retention periods
o Record a complete history of a record's movement

If a record is removed from the system, the following information should be documented:

o The record's index details
o Who retrieved the record
o The date the record was retrieved
o A proposed return date and the actual return date

Conventional Filing Methods Vs End Tab Color Coded Filing Methods

It has been established by the industry that traditional suspended pocket filing is the most inefficient way of storing documentation. The suspended file pocket, by design, is estimated to waste between 15-20% of valuable storage space within the system. Furthermore, suspended file sockets have a tendency to split and as a result cause misfiling / lost files.

File Indexes in a hand-written or text-printed format can be difficult to read enhancing the opportunity for slow retrieval and misfiling.

Using standard folders, filing / retrieval times are slow and misfiling is a common occurrence purely because another folder hides a records index.

Portrait Lever Arch Files are designed with a fixed center of between 73-78mm, invariably the folder houses less capacity than the file offers wasting valuable shelf storage space, in addition because of its design, fewer storage levels can be achieved in a standard storage system .

By simply employing a color coded index system these inherent problems can be overcome.

Disposal

Disposing of records is an important part of maintaining control of your records. Before a disposal schedule is put into place you must understand all of your legal and regulatory business requirements.

Legal and regulatory requirements including the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Public Records Act 1958 all effect the disposal of records. All have imposed new and more stringent duties on public sector bodies with regards to records disposal.

So what does this mean?

Disposal does not mean destruction. It means any action taken to determine the fate of the record including transfer to an archive system. When it is not possible at any time to determine the disposal of the records they may be scheduled for review at a later date.

Retention usually means the length of time records are kept, sometimes known as disposal schedules. If a disposal schedule is not put into place, the standby is to store records indefinitely taking up unnecessary space.

Confidential information must be stored securely and disposed of by way of shredding.

For further details on disposing scheduling please refer to Disposal Scheduling (RMS 5.1) Standard written by the National Archives.

Is That a Chicken Coop Or an Outhouse? Chicken Coop Construction Plans

Chickens need a safe and comfortable home just like any other animal. Their home is called a coop. For people who wish to raise chickens in their backyard, it is highly recommended to construct a coop where the birds will be kept safe from bad weather and their predators.

But first, you have to plan well for this particular poultry backyard project. Planning means deciding on the number of chickens you will raise, the size of your coop, the materials you will use, the design and the location. If this is a first for you, you can just start with a few say, three chickens and find out how you're doing as you go along. You can add a few more later on if you feel you can manage well.

Other important factors you will have to take into account are the ventilation and insulation of your coop as well as the lighting. Just like humans, chickens also feel the heat of the summer season and when proper ventilation is not provided, the birds can get sick. If you're building a closed coop, you can install vents ideally on the south or facing the east or you can create large holes on the north and south areas preferably at the point where the walls meet the roof.

For the cold winter months, the insulation will help keep the birds dry and warm so do not forget this as well. You can use Styrofoam sheets and place them between the walls and ceiling.

Lighting is as vital. Remember in your Science subject in the elementary grades, you were taught that plants and animals need light, water and air to live. Chickens, therefore, need natural light as often as they can. If you're going to put your coop in a dark or shaded area, build a structure that has openings to allow sunlight to enter or you can also install light fixtures for your birds.

Placement of feeders is another important aspect. Feeders are containers where you put the food of chickens. These have to be placed at a higher level and not on the floor to keep dirt away. Make sure that you place them in a way that you can easily reach them when feeding your chickens.

When building the structure, you do not have to make a complicated one. Start simple if possible. Keep in mind that chickens require sufficient space to move around so determine the right measurements. The standard measurement for each bird is two to three square feet. As your chickens grow, though, additional space will be needed. Do further research if you're special about the chicken breeds and their minimum space requirements.

You can use cheap wood materials combined with chicken wire for the coop. GI sheets can be used for the roof but be sure to build this in a sloping style to keep the water running when it rains.

Raising chickens is a nice hobby and one which can benefit you and your family. You not only have poultry meat for your meals but you can also enjoy chicken eggs for breakfast.

List Building Strategies And Tips

If you've been searching online for list building strategies and tips, you're probably feeling pretty overwhelmed right about now. There's a lot of information out there, and it can get quite confusing. If you're looking for link building strategies that really work, the following information will help.

A Three-Step Process

There are three primary steps to great list building: creating an opt-in box or lead capture page, getting it out to a large audience and prompting people to sign up. Those three steps are the foundation of today's best list building strategies, but you need to carry out each step in the right way. Specific details about making the most of each step are outlined below.

Step One: Creating an Opt-In Box or Lead Capture Page

You can not successfully build a list without creating an opt-in box or lead capture page first. After all, you need to know what people will be clicking on in order to market it properly. There's a lot of advice out there about completing this step, and it does not really belong in this particular post. At any rate, you're going to need to design this element before you can dig into the actual list building.

Step Two: Drawing in a Large Audience

In order to build a great list, you need a lot of traffic. It pays to study up on traffic generation tips. If people are not coming to your lead capture page, you can not hope to develop a great list. Fortunately, there are several great ways to bring traffic to your opt-in box. A few of the simplest ones include:

  • Social Media Marketing – It's free to join and use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. These sites make it easy to reach out to a huge audience too. Out of all the list building strategies that I'll share with you, this one is a no-brainer. Get involved in social media marketing and watch your traffic soar.
  • Article Writing – People go online to get information. Why should not you give it? Submit articles to online article directories. Include links to your lead capture page on them. Over time, these articles will draw in considerable amounts of traffic.
  • Video Marketing – You do not need a studio to create a great video. You just need the video to draw people to your lead capture page, so go for it.

Step Three: Compelling People to Sign Up

After getting people to your page, you need to get them to act. To that end, list building strategies and tips like including a free offer or incentive, offering an e-book for download and engaging in cross-promotion are all worthwhile options to consider. It only takes a second for a person to submit their email address, but they need a compelling reason to do so. As with traffic generation tips, there are many possibilities to consider. You can start with something basic like a free sample and branch out later.

By keeping these three important steps in mind, your list building efforts are sure to pay off handsomely. Put them to work right away.

Get Killer Six Pack Abs With These Muscle Building Workouts

If you are looking for a killer six pack abs workout without crunches then are you in luck.

Let's face it, no one likes doing crunches and no matter how many you do never seem to improve the mid-section one iota. People seem to be under the misunderstanding that crunches will some how give them ripped abdominal muscles and burn through fat as if it were butter. This of course is not the case and if you are looking for a workout which does not include them, then you are already aware of this fact.

To get killer six pack abs, you need a combination of weight training, high intensity intervals as well as the proper nutrition and only a little bit of abdominal exercises. It is possible to get those sexy abs without even doing a single abdominal routine.

As far as your weight training goes, try some of the following and do not forget to switch them around from time to time. The barbell squats are an obvious choice as well as dead lifts, chin ups, dips, lunges and even barbell presses.

What you do not realize is that your sexy six pack is already there waiting for the world to see them. They are just hiding under layers of fat and through the proper nutrition and plenty of high intensity workouts, you can burn through that layer of fat to reveal the muscles hidden underneath. Of course they may not be all that sexy if they are never used so you might have to work them out a bit just to get them to tighten up; but that still does not mean doing crunches.

If you work on increasing the muscle mass of your lower body through performing squats, those larger muscle groups will be able to burn through that layer of fat much faster then the abdominal muscles would ever be capable of.

How Durable Are Laminate Cabinet Doors?

Even though laminate cabinet doors are almost the cheapest selection for your cupboards, they are far from being the lowest in quality. When speaking from a standpoint of durability, I think high-pressure plastic laminate doors are the most durable of all.

Now I’ve been in the kitchen cabinet manufacturing business for many years and have owned several companies related to the industry. I’ve seen my share of old Formica cupboards that were in excellent shape. I have also seen some that were not in such good condition. Just like anything else, when something is maintained correctly, it’s possible “that” something will last a lifetime.

Laminate doors will last thirty to fifty years. The only thing that is required of the owners is to keep them wiped down regularly. Formica doors are easily cleaned with Windex, Formula 409 or just a damp cloth.

If you are considering having Formica in your kitchen or bathroom, may I suggest that you select white or off white for the color. Through the years these two colors have long withstood the ever changing kitchen cupboard trends. Many different shades and patterns of laminate get discontinued every year, but white remains on the color chip chains of all the suppliers.

Now it is important that you DO NOT confuse Formica laminate doors with Thermofoil doors. Raised panel Thermofoil doors WILL NOT last as long as the hard-shell, high pressure plastic laminate doors.

The two things that have a negative effect on Formica plastic laminate doors are how they are fabricated and cared for. If the manufacture did not use enough glue on the doors, then you will experience problems. In my expert opinion this only occurs once in ten thousand kitchens.

It’s important to understand the difference between a Melamine door and a plastic laminate door. Melamine is actually applied to the core board by the people who make the board. Formica laminate is applied by the people building your kitchen. Melamine is NOT as durable as laminate; it is thinner and not available in as many colors as Formica.

Here are a few cabinet door styles listed from cheapest to the most expensive:

  • Melanine
  • Plastic Laminate Doors
  • Thermofoil
  • Real Wood

Here’s a list of cupboard door styles from the lowest quality to the highest:

  • Thermofoil
  • Melamine
  • Real Wood
  • Formica

The way laminate doors are made is the sheet of plastic is purchased separately from the board. The board gets cut to the correct size for cabinet doors and then the plastic is cut a little over size. The laminate edges of the door are glued on first. Next, the front and backsides of the doors are covered with the Formica. Contact glue is used as the adhesive and routers are what the laminate is trimmed flush with the door’s edges with. Cabinet makers use a file to smooth off the sharp edges. Any access contact adhesive is cleaned off with lacquer thinner.

Kitchen cabinet doors are laminated with “vertical” grade or VT plastic. This is the thinner of the two choices. Countertops are made out of the thicker plastic that is called “standard” thickness. VT is generally one thirty second of an inch thick and standard is one sixteenth of an inch thick.

If you are considering getting Formica plastic laminate doors for your kitchen or bathroom, ask your cabinet maker if they can be three quarters of an inch thick. Five eighths thick laminate doors are durable and hold up well, but the thicker option will be more durable in the long run.

Spruce Up Worn, Dirty Carpet With an Easy to Clean Rug

Are you tired of looking at the same old carpet in your home, but you do not have the money to get new? Do you have stains that you can not get out the carpet, but simply love the color of the rest of the carpet? There is a very simple solution to both of those problems and others. Washable accent rugs will add a style and bright, warm feeling to any room. Even if your room is a neutral color, you can throw in a classy accent rug without making it too loud or gaudy. The accent rug can even pull a room together. In a large sitting room, a rug can create a smaller area to circle around. This can create a cozy space in your other large and impersonal room.

If you have a smaller room, an accent rug can clearly bright up and open up the space giving it the feeling of a larger space. You could even start looking for themes to tie the rooms of your home together. Something like placing a seashell rug in the bathroom could not only match the décor but also provide a non-slip surface to stand on. Another example could be a rug that blends both the colors of your kitchen with the colors of your dining room and place it the walk way between. This will pull the two rooms together and all but guide your guest from the food in the kitchen to the sitting area.

You will not need to worry about spilling or staining the rugs either, because most of these accent rugs are machine washable. That also makes these rugs ideal for children's rooms. They can match with the wall paper or painting patterns that are already up. They also can be connected with the child's favorite cartoon characters or scenery. If you will be placing your new rug on a hard floor, such as hardwood floors or concrete, you will want to invest in a rug pad. These pads will hold the rug in place and add a bit of cushioning under the rug. Not allowing the rug to slide around will actually increase the life of the rug.

If there are dirty spots on your old carpeting, purchasing an accent rug can be strategically placed to cover those stains right up and actually end up giving your room a clean, fresh look. There are also places where carpeting can be worn down or become damaged and threadbare. Placing a new accent rug over these locations can add cushioning and make those old places your own little secret. Placing an accent rug at the foot of your favorite chair can also act as a great foot warmer. A thicker weave on a rug can make it soft and warm.

One of the greatest things about an accent rug is the flexibility and the temporary nature of it. Unlike carpeting, once you have chosen a color or style for a room, you can change it as often as you would like. You can switch rugs from other rooms or just pitch the one you have and purchase a new one. You are not tied down to a color or out hundreds of dollars as you would be with re-carpeting a whole room. So next time you are thinking about sprucing things up a bit in your home, do not run straight to your savings account and the carpet man, look into a few area and accent rugs to spice up the look of your rooms. You'll be amazed how bright and warm a room can feel when an inexpensive rug is added.

Bricklaying Tips

Almost all brick structures have a charming old-world feel about them. This charm is probably the reason why so many people fancy brick structures, and why many want to build with bricks or learn how building with bricks is done. In fact, bricklaying is increasingly gaining popularity among the do-it-yourself crowd.

Being one of the oldest crafts in the world, bricklaying requires a good amount of skill and know-how in order to do it correctly. Many do-it-yourselfers start out with a vision of what their end structure will look like, only to be left with a faulty wall that is badly joined, making it susceptible to the elements, which will eventually cause it to tumble.

If you’ve never built anything before, you are better off starting with something much simpler than a project which requires bricklaying. However, if you have been building for a while and have succeeded in building many successful structures, then bricklaying may be the next step in your do-it-yourself repertoire. Just keep the following tips in mind:

Space Out Your Bricks

Bricks have to be laid with even spaces in between. This promotes the strength of the structure. A basic brick wall, for example, should have about 10mm of space between each brick. This 10mm is filled with mortar, which holds bricks (and the entire structure) together. To make sure you get the spacing correct, try laying all your bricks out without mortar just so you can see if 10mm between each brick will leave you with even spaces. If it doesn’t, say your last bricks will have 2 inches of space between them, then increase the space between each brick, but do so by evenly dividing the extra space.

Tap Them Straight

When you start laying bricks, you want to make sure they are laid evenly and straight. Again this is important for the structure’s strength. A structure that has slanting (evenly slightly slanted) bricks may not last or hold for long. It is advised that you have a spirit level on hand at all times, and check to see if your bricks are even frequently throughout the bricklaying process. Checking after every two bricks lain is a good practice. If your bricks are not even, simply tap them down (needs to be done while mortar is still soft) so that they even out. Just remember to scrape away excess mortar.

Know Your Bricks

Before you even start on your project, it is important to know the bricks you are working with. Bricks can be made from several different materials and these can act differently in different climates. Study your climate and do some research on what type of brick will do best considering where you live. Also, know the sides of your bricks. Most bricks have a face, an indented side (sometimes called a frog side), the top, and the end. Some manuals on bricklaying may simply use this type of jargon without explaining each one, so be sure you are familiar with the terms.

Calculate Your Mortar Correctly

When mortar is mixed, you only have about two hours before you have to use it up. If you don’t, it will harden and will no longer be of any use. It is therefore important that you calculate your mortar correctly. This saves you time and money.

So, to calculate for mortar, determine how many bricks you need. A simple brick wall will need about 65 bricks per square meter. Get your total number of bricks and divide this by 135, this equals the number of bags of cement you need. Multiply the number of bags by three, this equals the cubic feet of sand you need. Divide the sand by 27 (which is the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard.) You need to know the cubic yards for sand because this is how sand is sold. Finally, you will need four to six gallons of water per batch of mortar.

Mathematically:

65bricks/135 = 0.4814815 (number of bags of cement needed to build 1 square meter of brick)

0.4814815 x 3 = 1.4444444 (cubic feet of sand)

1.4444444/27 = 0.0534979 (cubic yards of sand)

Keep these tips in mind when bricklaying, and you should be able to construct a simple brick structure, like a wall at the end of your garden. If you would like to create more complex structures, such as corners, arches, etc., then you’re best off calling an experienced Mansfield bricklayer.

What's Hot in Direct Vent Fireplaces?

Are you looking for a direct vent fireplace?

Then you've likely spent some time searching on the web to see what's offered in the current marketplace. And like most you're head is spinning as there are literally hundreds of choices and styles being offered from a multitude of fireplace manufacturers. These manufacturers know that to stay competitive they must give people what they want. So what's hot in direct vent fireplaces?

One thing's for certain, the traditional log fireplaces are beginning to take a back seat to some of the newer trendy fireplaces now available. One of the most popular new trends is a low-profile contemporary gas fireplace without a traditional log set. More and more, homeowners are opting for a more metropolitan feel, rather than a traditional campfire log set design.

In contrast, a contemporary fireplace usually consist of a clean black or stainless steel face frame with no louvers to detract from the viewing window. Next, a flat pan burner (vs. a traditional dual tube burner on a cast iron grate) is used. This allows flames to shoot up uninhibited through a strategic pattern of holes for a beautiful elongated ribbon flame effect. Optional rocks or glass beads can be set in place to surround the burner holes, without blocking the flames. The result is a very clean, attractive look that works well in less-traditional and contemporary interior spaces.

A good example of the above-described fireplace is either the L series or custom C-View series fireplaces made by Montigo Fireplace Products of Ferndale, WA. These low profile fireplaces offer a contemporary and distinctly metropolitan feel that appeal to designers and homeowners alike. Other manufacturers offer similar contemporary designs.

While popular in all parts of North America, a major percentage of contemporary fireplaces are sold in heavy-populated and trend-setting cities such as New York, San Franciso and Chicago. Most are installed in new higher end homes and condominiums, as well as hotel lobbies, resorts, clubhouses, and galleries.

Traditional looking fireplaces will continue to be popular in the coming years, especially in less-densely populated and rural areas, and the choices are almost limitless.

Contemporary fireplace options have been more limited, but that is changing rapidly as more manufacturers are adapting to the demands of more discriminating customers.

Let's shift gears a little bit.

On the more practical side of the fireplace discussion is energy efficiency. Using your direct vent fireplace as a primary heating source is a great way to reduce your overall heating expense during the winter hours. By shutting off your central furnace and using only your direct vent fireplace as a zone or room heater you can actually cut your fuel consumption by 50% or more.

How's that possible?

By not heating unused or underutilized space in the home, and instead heating only the dwelling space where you spend the most time, you can eliminate a whole lot of thermal energy waste. In other words, most of the forced air heat pushing through ducts and heat registers into unoccupied spaces wastes heat energy. Instead, why not just heat the space you're in? That's called zone heating, and is a practical, common sense approach to saving a boat load of fuel dollars during the winter months.

You may be interested to know that a direct vent fireplace can be controlled with a thermostat. As the room calls for heat, the fireplace kicks on, just like your furnace. When satisfied, the fireplace turns off.

Now your fireplace serves two functions. It gives you the beautiful ambience only the glow of dancing flames can offer and, when used more tactically, can be a huge energy saver during the cold winter months.

Eco-Friendly Insulation

It’s always economical to have good insulation throughout your house. Unfortunately, many times your house either wasn’t insulated well enough or it’s insulated with things that aren’t eco-friendly, and that could cause other issues. But there are many green ways to insulate your home without using dangerous products.

One way to have your home insulated is by using recycled newspaper. The way that works is instead of single sheets of insulation, installers will blow it between your walls with a big hose. The more they can get in there, the better your walls will be insulated. You might have to deal with some newspaper dust for a couple of days, but once that’s settled it makes a fine way to protect your home.

Something else that can be used that’s relatively new is, believe it or not, mushrooms. Although this is very new technology that’s not widely available yet, what it will offer is a natural way to protect your home. It’s being developed to resemble packing material more than either sheet insulation or balls of insulation, which means it would work best being installed at the time a house is being built. Supposedly because of the density of mushrooms, the insulation wouldn’t have to be that thick and yet would still be very effective.

Another nice alternative to fiber glass insulation is insulation made out of cotton. There are some manufacturers who have been making insulation made out of cotton for years, which is a more dense type of material than what most of us are used to seeing. It costs a little bit more to produce, but it fills a house just as well as any other type of insulation, and is much safer for people overall.

Finally, something you probably wouldn’t have thought of is using insulation products that are soy based. It’s mixed in with a foam that’s sprayed into the walls, and can expand up to 100 times its normal size. That means you don’t have to use as much of it to insulate your home, and it will make a very tight seal between your walls. It also turns out to be water resistant and animal resistant, as it’s been found that the little nasty things that like to invade your home don’t like to eat it. If you go this route however, you might want to check with the people using it to ask them what percentage of soy is actually contained within the product.

How to Profit With Timber REITs

Have you ever been to Flagstaff, Arizona? If not, I recommend you visit some time. Flagstaff's a quaint little town located in the northern mountains of Arizona. The pine trees grow like crazy and in the summers a cool breeze always blows.

It's a nice escape from the Arizona desert. . . especially in the summer when it's over 110 degrees. Spend a short summer in Arizona and you'll know exactly what I mean.

Every summer as a kid we're head up to the woods.

My parents would drag me and my brothers, our dogs, and a week's worth of supplies up to the cabin. My grandsparents still have the place just outside Flagstaff. I've got great memories of summers spent exploring the woods, swimming and fishing in the lake, and just enjoying nature.

I loved it so much I'm starting to look at buying a place of my own. . .

Of course I sometimes jump in a little deep. Do not laugh. But I found a really interesting piece of property just the other day. A broker was advertising 13,000 acres of forest for sale in Pennsylvania (see I told you I think big). The pictures of the property are beautiful. Rolling hills and wide swaths of timber. The property even came with all the natural gas, mineral, and oil rights still intact.

The only problem was the asking price. . . a mere $ 32 million.

If you're quick on the math you know the property's selling for just over $ 2,400 per acre. Is that a good deal? I do not know but I was determined to find out.

The broker noted the property was generating $ 150,000 a year in income from campground rental fees. It sounds good till you realize that's a return of less than 1%. (Actually, it's less than half of 1% per year).

Not very exciting.

However, timber can be a great investment – and very exciting (if you know how to do it). It's like being a farmer, with a really big crop. Every year the trees grow larger and larger. Every season their value increases. Someone with good land and forestry management skills could probably create some substantial income.

The thought of buying this property is really appealing.

But I do not know the first thing about timber management. . . Oh, and I'm just a little short of the $ 32 million purchase price. I do however know of a cheaper and easier way to invest in timber.

What am I talking about?

Timber REITs of course. These companies are set up to buy and manage large amounts of timber. You can buy these REITs for a few dollars each on the stock market. No complex contracts or negotiations. Just use you normal brokerage account.

These Tree REITs give you ownership in some of the best timber property in the world. They come with top notch management. . . who know what they're doing. And best of all, they pay a great divide (some more than 4%).

So here are the ones I like.

The first REIT is Rayonier (RYN). They own more than 2.6 million acres. Rayonier also has two other businesses, one in traditional real estate development and the other in fiber production (so it is not a pure play Tree-REIT). Their market cap is just over $ 6.3 billion. With a little quick math, you can buy the company for roughly $ 1,392 per acre.

The second company is Plum Creek (PCL). They own 8 million acres of timber. Their market cap is a whopping $ 8.5 billion. But their land holdings are big. This company's trading at roughly $ 1,062 per acre. Not bad at all.

The last company I found was Potlatch (PCH). They only own 1.7 million acres of timber. Their market cap is $ 1.9 billion. That means every acre of property they own is worth $ 1,117.

I guess my dram of buying 13,000 acres of forest in Pennsylvania for $ 2,400 an acre is not such a good deal after all. These three investments however are cheaper (per acre), and they even pay nice dividends. If the idea of owning a forest sounds appealing take a closer look at these REITs ..

Benefits of Building a Shed With Plastic Lumber

Maintaining wood can be expensive, time consuming and a great effort, which are just a few of the reasons why it makes more sense to use plastic instead.

Plastic recycled lumber has many benefits over natural wood and it will not splinter, warp, crack or rot. Recycled lumber is also denser than wood and requires very little maintenance, and will last for more than forty years. Being resistant to UV rays, graffiti and stains, pleasing to the eye and available in a variety of different styles and colors are just more reasons why using recyclable plastic lumber for building a shed just makes more sense.

When considering whether or not to use recycled lumber to build a shed, it is important to remember this product requires no pre-treating before it can be used in the outdoors. One of the most attractive features of using recyclable plastic lumber is because it is made from recycled products. The lumber comes in many colors and can be dyed to emulate the appearance of natural wood. There are different grains of wood, colors and styles available and it can be used to erect a shed or to replace existing rotted wooden boards on a shed already constructed.

People elect to use recycled plastic materials on decks, patio furniture and sheds because of durability and value. Unlike wood products, recyclable plastic lumber will retain its appeal and is designed to withstand even the most sever of outdoor weather environments. Recycled plastic lumber will not bow or break, regardless of how old it is and it is lighter than wood, which means it is easier to work with.

Another benefit of using recycled plastic is the consumer's ability to order the planks with pre-drilled holes. Having the holes pre-drilled saves time and is less tedious when constructing a backyard shed and the material is not as heavy as traditional wood, which makes it extremely easy to use for whatever structure you are building. Recycled lumber planks will not experience color fading over time, which means it will always look attractive no matter how old the structure might be and you have no worries about needing to replace rotting or warped boards because of weather exposure.

You can save a lot of time and money when wanting to construct a shed, if you choose to use recycled plastic lumber. Instead of using wood to build a shed, by constructing it from recyclable plastic lumber you are doing your part to go green and using a material which has a longer life than traditional wood. Check out all the different varieties and colors available in recycled plastic lumber and you are sure to find something to suit your needs and requirements.

Choose A Reliable Logo Design Company to Avoid Headaches And Get A Great Service

Normally, businessmen are looking for logo design services that are efficient and help the business develop in the fastest and easiest way possible. In this case, picking a serious and trustworthy company to offer you this type of services is vital.

Services

Lucky for you, some logo design services come with a bigger package than other companies. Here we can include creating logo designs for businesses, stationary design and printing, graphic design, personalized site design, campaigns and brochures for business and so on. Of course, the extra services may cost you a bit more, but at the end of the day you will see that this investment is profitable on the long run. However, keep in mind the following aspects.

Price

This is the first thing that everyone is interested in. And it is quite a normal perspective, since nowdays there are a wide range of design services, offered by many professionals at different prices. And here comes the distinction between affordable and cheap. For example when the price is cheap, you can expect the logo to be "borrowed" from somewhere else. In order to prevent accidents like these from happening, it is advisable to respect the paying range that goes around professionals. This should be a respectable one and it is better to pay a good price and receive quality rather than troubles and frustration.

Professional Services

Everyone avoids hanging around providers that are not serious or trustworthy. Who has the time or the energy to spend on them? No one! So in order to avoid them, pick a reliable company which has a good reputation and offers you professional services. The perfect company should dazzle you with an impressive portfolio and positive feedback coming from satisfied customers. This means that, no matter what type of service you need (logo or site design), the services offered should be delivered in time and professionally. No one likes to wait for a service since we all know time is money.

Money Back Guarantee

A great way to check if the logo design company is true to its standards is to check the customer services. If they are willing to pay back the money you have spent in case something goes wrong, then your chances are pretty good. There are cases when these companies ask for a pay upfront, but this should not worry. Who would want to be taken for a fool and lose money? It would be very unpleasant to work hard at a logo, site or graphics and then be informed that your services are no longer required. Everyone wants to work with serious people: companies with clients and clients with good businesses that can deliver the right services. Thus, if the services received do not correspond to the desires expressed, then a refund should be offered. Do not you think?

Conclusion

All in all, when deciding to hire the services of a logo design company you should remember the ideas discussed above in order to avoid misunderstandings. You will see that when you find the perfect company for your needs, working with them will become a piece of cake. Try it!

Handy Tips To Help You Make Your Own Wood Wicks For Candles

Wood wick candles are the newest rage in candles. These painted candles have a wick that is made of a particular kind of wood that allows the candle to burn not only with a pleasant fragrance but it also has a familiar crackling sound much akin to wood fire in the fireplace.

If you make your candles then it is possible for you to make these too. There are a few tips to help you make your own wood wick. You will need a few strips of hardwood which are the dimensions of a Popsicle stick. You should choose a hardwood that burns at a very slow rate like olive, ash, walnut and eucalyptus. Also, you need to remember that these wood wicks are to be used only when making jar candles.

Now that you have the strips you must lay them out and place them next to each other without touching at all. The surface that you place them on should be a flat surface and they should be allowed to lay like that overnight. The next day you will need to prime the strips. To do this you will have to heat some wax in a double boiler. You should now take one wick at a time a dip it in the wax with the help of a paperclip clipped to it. Once removed it takes about 30 seconds for the wax to dry. Once the wick is dry you can store it in a metal holder and use them the next time you make your candles.

The Features and Benefits of Revolving Doors

There are now many door options available to architects when designing commercial, public or educational buildings. These can be manual, automatic, or a combination of both, but the underlying needs and requirements are likely to be the same e.g. effective, safe, and easy for the user. Revolving Doors made their first appearance in a New York Restaurant in 1899 but there’s Patent evidence to suggest that a Philadelphia resident actually thought of the idea over 10 years earlier. So why over 100 years later is this idea still so relevant and so widely used?

The Features

Revolving doors essentially consist of a series of 3 or 4 panels which are also known as wings or leaves. These panels are attached to a central vertical shaft around which they rotate. The whole structure is enclosed in a cylindrical structure and the panels are spaced in such a way that in normal operation the door is never really open i.e. there is no clear direct passage from the street into the building which can bypass the panels. The panels and enclosure generally incorporate glass for safety as well as aesthetic reasons. The glass allows people to see others using the door and to regulate their movements accordingly.

Automatic versions have a powered central shaft and use sensors to stop and start the door in potentially unsafe situations. There is generally a speed control feature, and the doors themselves can be folded back to create a clear space through the opening for emergency situations or for moving large objects in or out of a building. The direction that the doors revolve actually differs in different counties. For example the predominant movement of UK revolving doors is clockwise with a right hand side entry. In Australia and New Zealand however the situation is reversed. In U.S. in the 1940s a fire in a popular Boston nightclub meant that lives were lost because there was only one revolving door as an exit. Since then revolving doors have been made collapsible, and a hinged door of equivalent capacity is generally placed next to the revolving door. This other door also assists with disabled access.

The Benefits

These doors have an obvious aesthetic appeal and can enhance the look of a building. They provide energy and they save money. This is because they are never actually open as they allow people to enter and leave a building. This means that valuable heat is not lost, and any air conditioning balance is maintained. In very tall buildings the revolving doors stop the effect of air being sucked up and down through the building through the vents and doorway depending on the different temperatures inside and outside. These doors are very effective at keeping a regulated flow of people in and out of a building which enhances safety, and they are easy for people to use particularly if they are carrying bags and other objects. Their one way operation means that they can also be very useful for security where certain areas can’t be bypassed or avoided or where a certain direction flow is necessary e.g. airports.
