All About Different Archery Techniques

For archers, learning different methods by which they can shoot arrows is very important. An archer is only defined by its accuracy and precision, as well as the flexibility by which he or she is able to dispatch the arrows. There are various different archery techniques that have been discovered and practiced through the ages, and the latest advances in technology have paved the way for a variety of different methods by which archers can shoot their arrows. The most important thing for an archer is to hit an accurate shot in a small amount of time.

Most archers have to take proper positions before shooting, like sitting in a crouching manner or having to rest their elbow on some sort of a support before they are able to shoot properly. Apart from your shooting position, the accessories that you use can also determine your accuracy as well. Using basic accessories such as an arm guard and a finger tab can greatly increase your chances of getting a successful shot.

Your body stance should be aligned linearly with the bow, so that when you aim for your target, your eye would be able to pinpoint the exact position that you need to shoot at. Shooting an arrow does not mean that you just pull back the bow and let go, because there are a variety of different things that must be kept in mind while shooting. Your back muscles should be appropriately tightened to ensure proper tension in your body, which reduces the recoil reaction while shooting.

The hand from which you are going to draw the bow needs to be relaxed completely as well before you release the bow. Unless you are able to relax the muscles in your draw hand, the arrow might not be released with as much accuracy as you would want it to, because the tension in your draw hand is bound to misbalance the arrow.

Secondly, the positioning of your bow arm is very important. Especially while shooting, it is of vital importance that you keep your bow arm up and steady to ensure the arrow does not go wayward. For an archer, it is very important that he or she is able to keep their movements steady, and position themselves in a manner that does not let them make sudden movements.

Skilled professionals are able to take a shot quicker as compared to amateurs, and this is just because they are able to steady themselves in an instant and draw and release the arrow in a flicker of a second. Practice plays a very important in this art as well. The more you practice your positioning and steadiness, the sooner you would be able to aim at your targets.

Most of the people believe that if they aim with one eye open and one closed, they would be able to get a better aim. That is a very wrong concept, and for those who know, it is much better to shoot with both eyes open rather than having one closed. This provides a great deal of assistance in low light conditions, however you would require a great deal of practice to ensure that you are able to shoot with both your eyes open.

Your fingers should be properly relaxed while holding the bow. If there is any sort of tension in your fingers, it could cause your arrow to falter and fall, and it would not be released with as much force as you might have wanted it to. These are some of the most common archery techniques that should be known by archers.

A Yellow Plastic Duck

I guess you have no interest in my bathing habits but, I am sorry, you are just going to have to read a little before you get to the meat in today’s sandwich.

I shower and never take a bath. It is a preference and nothing to do with saving water. I just prefer standing under a hot waterfall rather than sitting in a bath which is forever getting colder. And when Sasha reads this let me just say that sharing a hot tub is a whole different matter, and we can always share a shower. But she already knows that.

If I had a bath, just like the mighty Bertie, I would definitely float a yellow plastic duck in it, but he has an excuse. He is just one year old. Actually, Bertie has more than a single plastic duck in his bath. He has a whole flotilla of floating toys for distraction, while Lucinda washes him.

Perverse maybe, but these were my thoughts when I read this week’s news.

We have always polluted our home, our planet, but only since the industrial revolution have we successfully polluted it faster than the planet can cope and regenerate.

Did you know it rains more at weekends? That seems strange because a seven-day week is a human construct, yet it does rain more at weekends. It is because our work patterns change once every five days. We don’t commute, and factories shut down. At weekends, we shop and laze around our homes.

Our behaviour changes the weather. We impact our world.

Now, there is something far more serious than last year’s giant fat ball blocking up the London sewers. It was all over the news, but this extract is taken from CNet.

A team of scientists from The Ocean Cleanup Foundation, six universities and an aerial sensor company worked together on the ambitious study. They published the startling results Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the name given to an area of the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii where plastics of all kinds have been accumulating into one big watery junk pile. It contains everything from plastic buckets to discarded fishing nets. A new study shows the patch is bigger than previously thought and is also growing at an astounding rate.

It is now three times the size of France.

The problems with plastic have been growing and last year David Attenborough presented Blue Planet 2 to an unbelieving British audience highlighting the scale of the problem, and they listened. Causes have been espoused and after plastic shopping bags, the focus is now on those takeaway plastic cups from the likes of Costa and Starbucks but, while that is worthy it attacks the tip of the problem and is not a solution to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

That requires far more extensive change.

Can I live without plastic? I can forgo take away coffee cups, but I have just had a look around the house to see how much plastic I use. Look in your fridge. Everything is wrapped in plastic. My toothbrush is plastic, the toothpaste is stored in plastic, my shampoo is in a plastic bottle etc, etc, etc. The answer to my hypothetical questions is, no.

Then another theoretical question. What would happen if I had to store all my own plastic waste and keep it for my lifetime? The probability is that I would be sleeping in the garden next to a house full of rubbish.

I am no eco-warrior, but I do try and sort the household waste, but I have little understanding of what happens to it. I am happy to put it into the right bin and watch the dustbin men take it away once a week. When I throw out old clothes I don’t think about the landfills forever growing. When I dispose of plastic I assume that it doesn’t get thrown into the sea.

I hope someone, if not me, is being responsible.

I hold up my hand and admit that my generation is the worst of the sinners and it is inappropriate for me to now shout foul and then ask everyone else to clean up my mess. But, like it or not that is exactly where we are, and we need to do something quickly. Our planet’s natural ability to regenerate and provide a climate that allows human life to exist is dependent on the oceans and is being tested to the limits.

After killing ourselves in pointless wars, polluting everywhere we go is possibly our second greatest natural ability. If we are so clever then we need to change and recognise our failings, otherwise, there may be no long-term future.

Imagine Bertie’s bath time fleet so large that he is crowded out of his own bath. Imagine that there was no room for him. That could be our future.

Unity Wedding Sand Ceremony

The unity sand ceremony, or another name is a wedding sand ceremony, is becoming a popular alternative to the traditional unity candle lighting ceremony symbolizing the unity of one. During the candle ceremony, the tapered candles are lit, then the bride and groom will light the unity pillar candle together concluding their union as one.

Reciting your unity along with using the unity sand works the same as lighting their candle with the exception of now you are replacing the candle with sand. Unity sand sets are gaining popularity for the traditional unity ceremony, as the sand becomes not only keepsake artwork, but also you do not have to worry about the problems which may plaque trying to light the tapered candles, especially if you are having an outside event. Just like sand art, the bride and groom both pour the sand creating a memorable keepsake of their event.

After the wedding, the unity set can become a decorative memorable keepsake, displaying a valued centerpiece of memories for one of the most cherished days of their lives.

With a unity sand set, you'll have a large glass vase along with two small vases or glass style tubes. At the beginning of the wedding ceremony, the bride's mother and the groom's mother go and each will fill the small glass tube and set down next to the large glass vase. Typically one of the colored sands will be white and the two others can be the color of your wedding décor.

  • Once the ceremony begins, the officiant will pour the white sand into the main large vase to symbolize the importance of the bride and grooms faith in their relationship.
  • The Groom then will begin to pour a small portion of his colored sand into the large glass vase.
  • Once the groom stops pouring, the Bride will follow by pouring a small portion of her colored sand into the large main vase.
  • The bride and groom will continue to pour their sand in interviews creating layers of sand. When they each get close to the end of their sand, the bride and groom will simultaneously pour the balance of their sand into the vase together completing their unity ceremony. The blending of the two sands at the same time symbolizes the joining of the bride and groom in unity.
  • Once they are done with pouring of the sand, the bride or groom will cover the top with the provided stopper that came with the unity sand set.

An idea to add to the end of the ceremony is possibly having the officiant give a blessing or a customized versa over the ceremony sand vase.

5 Interior Design Principles for Business

There is only one goal in every designer’s mind when they create an interior design for a shop. That goal is to attract as many customers as they can, and influence them enough so the customers are willing to part with their cash.

As of right now, there are many ways to do interior design for a retail shop, but according to our 20 years of experience in doing various types of interior design for shops, no matter what is the design, when you want your interior design to be able to attract customers, it has to have these 5 Important Design Principles for a Shop:

1. Eye-catching Product Display

One of the most important points in doing interior design for a shop, is the Shop Entrance. Why? Because every potential customer will not suddenly appeared inside of your shop (you’ll be scared if they did), and they all starts at the same place: The Entrance. From there they will subconsciously judge whether this shop is worth entering or not.

This is where the “Power of Visual Merchandising” shines the most. The reason is because what subconsciously affect the judgement of customer are the design of your shop entrance and more importantly, the products you displayed in the front of the shop. By displaying the right products in front of your shop, when potential customers come and see it, they will have a higher chance of entering your shop because now they know that you sell the products they need.

Now, the problem is how you can decide which product to display. Speaking from experience, the way you arrange and show your Display product must be able to tell a story and convey a message to your potential customers. By doing this correctly, then the potential customer will be more interested in your shop compared to other shops that sold the same kind of products.

2. Use All 5 Senses

As a human, we use all 5 senses to perceive the conditions around us. So to be able to attract customer easier, you have to make your products and interior design appealing to your customer’s all 5 senses. Of course, depending on the types of business, one or two senses can’t be used, but the point is, you have to maximize the arrangements and attraction in your shop’s interior design so people can get attracted to your store more easily.

Below are some of the examples of how we can use the customer’s 5 senses based on our experience:

  • Sight: This is the easiest sense to affect. There are numerous ways you can attract customers using this sense, from using colors, changing the intensity of the lighting in your shop, to simply make a good arrangements of the products in your shop. When done correctly, you can even adjust what products the customer will focus on and how long they will stay in a section of your shop.
  • Sound: There are multiple ways to affect this sense. People’s conversation, Background music, even the sound around you can affect your perception. For example, younger people tend to be attracted to shop at a place where they play upbeat music, while older people generally like a shop that play soft or classical music better.
  • Touch: The sense of touch is a very important thing when you’re doing Interior Design. People will be more willing to buy something when they can try it first. For example, there are 2 shops that sell handphones. One of them allow customer to try it on the spot with security measures, the other forbid the customer to try the product and they can only see it. Which one of these two shop you’ll want to buy a handphone from? Generally, people will choose the first one. This is why the sense of touch is an important factor in Interior Design for a shop.
  • Smell: Believe it or not, there’s an entire science to what’s referred to as “scent marketing”, with several studies and real-world case studies of global brands like Samsung, Sony, and Verizon applies it to their advantage. The reason being that smell is considered to be a fast track to the system in your brain that controls both emotion and memory, two very prominent factors behind why we choose one brand over another.
  • Taste: This sense is mostly used in Consumables Department. When you give people the chance to taste a sample of the products you sold, they will be far more inclined to buy it. This is why usually in a place that sold consumables, there is a section dedicated to free samples.

3. Product Management

To make our shop look nice, we have to keep the interior of our shop clean and tidy. This is especially important for small shops, where things can easily get messy. The easiest way to avoid this is by doing some product and decoration management for our products. One of the most famous principles in retailing is, “Retail is Detail”. Therefore, to be able to manage all your products to satisfying level, you need to pay attention to any detail.

Don’t just put your products randomly because lack of space or motivation, but take your time to gather your products and see which product goes well together with which. This way, you can also create some space which enables you to not put your merchandise too closely with each other.

You can also separate your products using elevation so you can make customer focus on which product you want them to buy. To do this, put the products you want customer to focus on at eye level. Based on our experience, customers tend to pay more attention to the products caught in their eyesight than the products above or below their eyesight.

4. Control Your Customers

To make your customer browse through as much of your product as possible, the best way to do it is to design a path in the Interior Design of your shop. The path usually varies according to the shop’s size and the products sold.

The first thing you should remember when you decided to make a path in your Interior Design: Do it Counter Clockwise. Why? Because according to the research about customer behavior in the shop, almost 90% of the people tend to go to the right after entering a shop. So what we need to do is to make use of this habit and make sure that as they do that, they also continue walking throughout your store to gain the maximum exposure to your products. The more products you can expose to them, the more chances they will buy one of them.

By making a path around the store, you will also be able to control the customer flow. Moreover, if you can do this point correctly, you can make them focus on what product you want, make them go to a section of your shop, and many other things. Keep in mind that if you want to use the path to lead them somewhere, it’s better if you put an eye-catching and attention-grabbing display at the end of the path so the customers will be attracted to it.

Most stores use a circular path to the right to get customers to walk through to the back of the store and come to the front again. Some will make it even easier by covering the path with a different texture or look from the general flooring, paying homage to the old saying “where the eyes go, the feet will follow.”

5. Satisfy Your Customer

This is arguably the most important point when you want to make an Interior Design for any business. I think I have no need to say WHY making every customer coming to your shop satisfied is important for every business. But there is a need to explain HOW we can do it. Therefore, we will give you some points to take note based on our experiences:

  • Product Location: When you arrange your product, make sure that you put a sign over each category of your product. Sign makes people feel easier to find things they need, and you can also use it to monitor their habit. See what products they like best and what products sell the least. Then you can change your next product order according to the result of your research to maximize benefits. People will also feel that they can quickly find things they want unlike other shops that didn’t provide any sign, thus when they want to buy something again, they will likely prefer your shop.
  • Don’t block the flow of traffic: Your store should be easy to navigate and have enough room for multiple people to be in it at once without running into one another. Make sure your aisles are wide enough for at least two people pass through without bumping into each other.
  • Provide Rest Zone: People often went shopping in a group. In a group, not everyone wants to buy the same things. Sometimes when they enter a shop, only part of the group wants to buy something. The others just wait. In this case, when they see a rest zone, or at least some chairs, then they can take a rest there. Sometimes, when they look around from their spot, they will see something they like, and they will go there and browse around. If there is no rest zone, then people will just go out and you won’t get a new customer. So, it’s essential to provide a rest zone in your shop, or at least some chairs.
  • Adjust Lighting: Pay attention to the lighting. Well-thought-out and well-placed lighting will attract attention to your store’s displays and merchandise, show off your products, and even make them more enticing than they actually are. Be sure to adjust it so every place in your store got enough lighting, including the corners or your store. But be careful, supplying too much light will have negative effects. Don’t forget to mix uplight and downlight in your store. When an element of downlight is added to the uplight, shoppers will perceive the atmosphere as brighter and more comfortable.

Interior design for retail and shop business is an endless process. Every person has their own likes and dislikes, so there is no template for interior design of these types.

The only thing you can do is to adhere to these 5 Principles to make the Interior Design for your shop, then slowly observe your customers’ behavior and habits to know them better, then see what they like and dislike from your products.

Don’t forget to also memorize their movement pattern and behavior, so you can test several different arrangements and choose the most optimal Interior Design for your personal shop.

Keep all your 5 senses open and you’ll be able to create an interior design that is good for both of you and your customers.

3 Facts About Ergonomic Keyboards and You

Ergonomic keyboards.

In a world full of technology you hear about these quite often. However, alternative keyboards might not be all they are cracked up to be.

Because too many people choose to use alternative keyboards as crutches rather than tools. Even while typing this article I am finding myself having to lift up my hands and stop resting them on the keyboard repeatedly. Never mind my legs being crossed under my chair or my body posture.

See, ergonomics is not a bad thing when used as part of a systematic approach to working on computers. However, in and of itself an alternative keyboard will not solve as much as if we use the tool combined with other valuable ingredients.

*** Your Body ***

You can buy another wireless ergonomic keyboard easily enough. No matter how science progresses you only get one body and replacing its parts can be quite a hassle at best. Therefore, take care of yourself.

These are all good pointers though hard to do, especially if you work at the computer for longer time periods.

*** Breaks ***

Many days I am working well over 10 hours a day on my laptop. Without keeping my fluids going I can often go several hours without interruption.

Therefore, I drink water and a lot of it during the day.

Not only is this good for my body, but it also – well, I’ll let you draw the conclusion to what happens when someone drinks a lot of water. The bottom line is I get a break even if it is only 2.5 minutes.

*** Stretching ***

While taking that break move your body around.

Computers are meant to stay relatively stationary, even laptops, which are much more portable. On the other hand, humans are supposed to be mobile.

So while taking that 2.5 minute break do some stretches. It doesn’t take much, and it will help you when you return to your desk.

*** Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard ***

With all of the above in place you will now find the best results from alternative keyboards.

See, I’m not against using them as part of a holistic process for complete results. However, if you buy an ergonomic keyboard and think that it is all you need you are fighting a losing battle that will sooner or later become painfully serious.

Sometimes I see people with ergonomic keyboards sitting on their lap as they lean back reclined in their chair working away. If the tool is not going to be used in the manner for which it was meant, then why use it?

However, when you are ready to turn your ergonomic keyboards into powerful tools that will keep you going the distance for the long-term then they are great additions to a complete strategy of success for you, your body and your life.

Using Gymnastics Rings to Train for Rock Climbing

Gymnastics rings are an incredibly versatile training tool for rock climbing. While they will not train your finger strength, they do work a lot of important muscles, like your arms, shoulders, back, and core. They also build a high strength to weight ratio, which is important to gymnasts and climbers alike.

I bought my own pair of rings four years ago and have not gone back to conventional weight training since. Not only do they provide a wonderful workout, but they are also simply more fun to use than free weights. In fact, I found that rings target more muscle groups at once and build strength more efficiently than traditional weight lifting.

You can use rings for pull-ups, muscle ups, pushups, leg raises, levers, and more. In addition, the inherently unstable nature of rings requires all of your muscles to work together, so your entire upper body is engaged instead of only isolating one muscle at a time.

John Gill, the "Father of modern bouldering," was a trained gymnastic and trained on rings throughout his life. He was famous for his one armed pull ups and front levers. These powerful moves allowed him to excel at bouldering like no one had before him.

While there are many other important aspects of climbing to focus on as well, incorporating some ring training can efficiently boost your overall strength and might well find a way into your regular climbing training.

Getting started with rings

Gymnastics rings are simple to set up and get started with. Although the movements performed on them can be extremely difficult, the rings themselves are a simple device. The popularity of rings as a workout tool outside of gymnastics has been growing.

You do not need the professional set up that gymnasts use; most basic rings consist of a nylon strap that runs through the ring with a buckle on the end. They can be purchased easily online, and for the amount of versatility and training they provide are fairly cheap too. Set up is simple, you simply throw the strap over a beam, branch, or other horizontal pole, and fasten the buckle. The rings can then be lowered for pushups or raised for pull-ups and dips.

Exercises on gymnastics rings

While there are many advanced moves that can be performed on the rings, I will stick to describing moves that can more directly help with rock climbing training. On the most basic level rings can be used simply for pull ups. If you do not have a pull up bar available then rings are great!

Muscle Ups

One of the first advanced tricks to learn is the muscle up. Muscle ups work the chest, arms, back, and core … pretty much everything! They start from a dead hang on the rings and proceed like a pull-up. However, when you reach the top of the pull you continue pushing yourself up into the dip position. Done correctly this looks smooth and easy, but do not be fooled! Your first time trying it will most likely end with wobbling and flailing.

If you do succeed you will most likely find your arms shaking uncontrollably as you try to hold yourself up. I've taught many people muscle ups, and every one of them struggled and wobbled their first few times! It really makes you appreciate how many different muscles gymnastics rings target.

Technique is very important when trying a muscle up. It is important to use a false grip, where your wrist is over the top of the ring, in order to easily switch from pulling up to pushing into a dip. Practice your dips and pull-ups separately until you can transition from one into the other in a successful muscle up.

Hanging Leg Raises

Leg raises are my go-to core workout. They can be done on many things, from pull up bars to railroads, but my favorite is leg raises from the dip position of the rings. Not only does it give your abs a great workout, but it also challenges your back, chest, and arms to stabilize you in the process.

As a warning, these are difficult to do. They first require you to be able to do a muscle up and dips. Once you've accomplished that though, give leg raises a try. Remember to keep your back straight and your elbows locked as you bring your legs up as high as you can. Mentally focus on contracting your abs as much as possible to get the most out of it.

Hanging knee raises are also valuable. Performing them on rings adds so much difficulty that most often I do these instead of the whole leg. After a few sets my abs are burning and my arms and chest are beat. That's a good workout!

Front Levers

The front lever is a difficult skill to master. It involves holding your body horizontally from a bar or rings. This requires incredible strength in your arms, back, and core, making it an ideal climbing exercise. John Gill famously performed this skill one handed … now that requires serious strength!

The strength that front levers build is great for climbing training. To perform one, hang from the rings with straight arms. Then lift your body up until you are horizontal to the ground. The tough part is keeping your body straight!

It will be impossible to do a full front lever the first time you try it. Instead, you will have to progress towards the full lever in stages. Start with the normal lever position but pull your knee in and keep them tucked towards your chest. After you can hold that position for thirty seconds, work on slowly progressing to holding your legs out flat. Keep a flat back and lock your elbows.

When you get close to the full lever you can try an exercise called ice cream makers. Hang in the pull up position and pull yourself up into the front lever position, hold it briefly and then lower yourself back down. Sets of these will help to improve your lever.

More Possibilities

These are the main exercises that I use gymnastics rings for. There are many more cool strength moves on the rings, such as the iron cross and planche, but the strength that these require does not help with climbing well enough to justify training them. If you have the desire though, there are hundreds of movement variations on the rings you can find.

If you're looking for a chest workout, one of my favorites is archer push ups. To do these, lower your rings to the ground and get in the push up position. Extend one arm straight off to the side while lowering yourself with the other arm. Push back up and alternate arms. This is basically an assisted one arm push up and demands much more strength than normal push ups. Rings also allow the extra challenge of lowering yourself below your hands, which works a larger range of motion. For added difficulty try elevating your feet behind you; this adds weight to your push up.

The iron cross is one of the most famous ring movements. It involves holding yourself in the air with your arms extended straight out horizontally. This is a much more difficult move and takes a lot of time to develop. Care must be taken when training for it because the move places high stress on your shoulders and elbows. It is easy to injure yourself if your technique is wrong, so be careful if you attempt it.

Overall, small workouts on gymnastics rings can be used very successfully in a climbing training regiment. The bulk of your training should still be on climbing and finger strength, but rings provide a great opportunity to build body strength. They are a very efficient exercise because of the stabilization required, and just a few sets a weeks will show results. Try them out, and see how much easier overhangs, lock offs, and stabilization become!

Two Great Churches to Visit in London

Westminster Abbey is an active church where life revolves around Christian worship, just as it has done for centuries. Westminster Abbey is also where the royal coronations have taken place since 1066.

Westminster Abbey is also the burial place of many of the past Kings and Queens of England and Scotland, as well as many extremely famous men and women from the pages of history. Westminster Abbey has the aura of a pageant of British history, as you can see in the mosaics, stained glass, paintings, tombs, textiles and other beautiful artefacts on display. No wonder that Westminster Abbey welcomes one million visitors each year!

But in addition to the Abbey Church itself, visitors who explore the Abbey precincts can see St Margaret's Church – the original Church of the British Parliament, the Houses of Commons and Lords. If you wish to prolong your visit, why not tour the Great and Little Cloisters, the beautiful Chapter House and Museum and, weather permitting, College Garden.

If you feel in need of a rest after all this exploring, you can revive yourself with tea and coffee in the Abbey cafe, or buy some souvenirs at the Abbey Shop. You'll be glad to know that several tours are available, and there is an audio guide with a choice of eight languages. Alternately, you can take a tour led by a volunteer, which lasts for over an hour. These instructive and entertaining tours stay at the North Door and take you through the most notable features: the Shrines, the Cloisters and the Nave, the Royal Tombs, and of course, Poets' Corner!

The Abbey has special services and a full range of events scheduled including lectures and concerts. Opening hours are from 9.30-17.45 Monday to Saturday, as the church is open for worship only on Sundays. Westminster Abbey, SW1P 3PA Phone: 020 7222 5152

By contrast, St Paul's Cathedral is the fourth London cathedral to occupy its site. It was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher Wren and the construction was finished in 1710. A £ 40 million restoration scheme has been in place for some time now – and the new facilities will be a great way to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the cathedral in 2010!

For the moment, though, visitors can enjoy a program of regular worship and sermons. This is the Church of London, witness to famous events such as the funeral of Admiral Lord Nelson, the laying to rest of the Duke of Wellington and the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill have taken place across the centuries.

You may even see a service of remembrance or sometimes a royal commemoration or a magnificent wedding when you visit! Of course most visitors come to see the supreme dome of St Paul's Cathedral, one of the largest cathedral domes ever built, and the one which symbolises London's defiance in the face of Second World War fire bombs. It's an astounding 111.3 meters high.

St Paul's is built to the standard plan of a cross design, with the dome and the famous Whispering Gallery, high above the nave, at the dead center of the transept. Decorated with astounding mosaics, intricately carved stonework and amazing arches, St Paul's is a masterpiece of cathedral architecture.

You can enjoy a recorded audio tours at your leisure as you stroll around the building; they come in eight languages and last for about 45 minutes. If you wish to know more about the building, you can book a one hour Triborium Tour which takes in the library, the nave, the Trophy Room – featuring Wren's plans – and the famous geometric staircase.

General tours of the building are available at 11.00, 11.30, 13.30 and 14.00, and see the crypt – where you will certainly pick up the history of the cathedral. And if you need sustance, refreshments are available at two venues: the Refectory Restaurant and the Crypt Café.

Tips For Handling Thick Documents In Your Coil Binding Equipment

If you've had to bind thick documents on coil binding equipment, you know it's often a difficult and challenging process. Yet with top-notch machinery, the right binding elements and little know-how, you can bind even the thickest documents easily and successfully over and over again.

Have The Right Materials

For the best success in binding thick documents, be sure you have the proper binding elements such as wire coils. These bindings run from very thin to very wide and can bind very thick materials of 300 to 400 pages.

Next, decide if you'll put a cover on your document and, if so, how you'll punch them. Covers can be collated with your document and punched at the same time or be punched separately.

It's generally a good idea to punch covers of very dense material on their own rather than with the document. However, if you're worried about proper hole-alignment, you can punch the cover and document together, but you must reduce the number of pages under the front cover or between both covers when punching. This will increase the time of your overall punching and binding process, so be sure to take that into account if you're working under a deadline.

If you have covers that are larger or smaller than your document, they must be punched on their own and not with the documents. You'll need to readjust your paper stops to be sure you've centered the hole-pattern correctly on the cover, and this too will add time to your process.

Use The Proper Hole Pattern

The right hole-pattern, or pitch, is critical to properly binding thick documents. The pitch tells you the number of holes that will be punched per inch along the edge or a spine of the materials. For example, four holes per inch is a 4: 1 pitch or punch pattern, while 5: 1 represents five holes per inch. Be sure you always do a test punch to see that all holes are even spaced and that there are no partial holes before you punch your actual document.

Next, make sure your binding element is large enough to allow the pages to turn freely once bound and that the holes are the right size for your chosen binding material. In some cases it's good to set your coil binding equipment to punch larger holes than necessary for your binding or to punch oval rather than round holes. When you do this, make sure use the right punch pattern.

Thick documents usually are bound with a thick coil binding that can be hard to insert into regular-sized holes. Punching larger holes makes it easier to insert the binding and reduces the chance of pages being ripped or snagged on the element.

Inserting Bindings Manually Or Electrically

In most cases, an electrical coil binding inserter makes it much easier and faster to put coil bindings on documents. Start by manually inserting the coil into the first couple holes, then place the coil against the rollers of your electric coil inserter and it will automatically thread the coil through the rest of the holes.

However, you'll have more success binding thick documents manually. The speed of an electric inserter will often cause the binding to misalign or tear when working through thick materials. The slower, manual process all but eliminates this and gives you a beautifully bound finished document.

When you're inserting the coil manually or electrically, it helps to curve the binding edge as your start the process. You can also use a binding sleeve or a book former. Once the threading is complete, remove sharp edges at the top and bottom of the binding coil with crimping pliers.

Coil bindings come in a variety of colors that create a handsome bound document. It takes a little more time to bind thick documents with coil, but the look and sturdiness of the finished product are worth it.

A Buyer's Guide to Flatbed Scanners

Flatbed scanners generally deliver the best combination of quality, flexibility, and usability in scanning. They can be used to scan different kinds of media, including photos and film (with the additional use of a transparency adapter); they can be used to scan text for OCR and document archiving; and they can be used to scan material of varying sizes and thicknesses – from small postage stamps to large mechanical blueprints and 3D objects. To determine the flatbed scanner for your needs, this buying guide covers some of the more important flatbed scanner specifications that you will need to know.

Bit depth and color pass

Practically all scanners today are single-pass types with 48-bit color. Gone are the scanners of yore that required three passes to capture the full RGB (red, green, blue) color information from an image in individual, painstakingly slow takes. Gone too are 24-bit and 36-bit scanners that proved sufficient in the past for delivering up to 68.7 billions of color.

Today's single-pass, 48-bit scanners are fast and can theoretically capture up to 250 trillion colors – clearly more color than the human eye can distinguish or what monitors and printers can reproduce – but impressive nonetheless for the promise of yielding hues as close to life as possible and delivering smoother color gradations. Ignore all but single-pass scanners when shopping for a flatbed, and aim for 48-bit color as well. Consider lower-bit models (such as 42-bits) only if your scanner of choice has other specs that a higher-bit counterpart may not have – such as patented technologies and special features – that more than compensate for the lower bit depth of your selected model.

The resolution of a scanner determines the level of detail that can be captured; the higher the resolution, the sharper the scan will be. There are two types of resolution: optical and interpolated, with optical resolution being the more important spec, as it relates to the scanner's actual optics and amount of information that it can sample. The interpolated resolution of a scanner is helpful only in specific applications – such as scanning line art, where higher resolutions can even out jaggedness and produce smoother contours.

Most flatbeds today feature respectable specs for optical resolution, ranging from 2400 dpi to 4800 dpi. Any scanner with such resolution figures would prove a respectable choice, since these specs are more than capable of delivering sharp detail or enlarging images for most print applications. Remember, too, that scanning your images in the full resolution of the scanner is likely to yield file sizes of unmanageable proportions – without delivery any discernible benefit towards increasing image clarity or quality. So forget the resolution wars of the past when manufacturers trotted out their resolution specs to trump their closest rival. Instead, look for other features today in flatbeds that may be more important for your needs, or consider the resolution spec TOGETHER with these other features when choosing your choice of flatbed.

CCD vs. CIS Sensor Technology

Image sensors in flatbed scanners can be of two types – CCD or CIS. Scanners with CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors use a system of mirrors and lenses for redirecting light reflected from the original document to the CCD array. Because of the required optics, CCD scanners are more expensive to produce and result in bulkier scanners, compared to their CIS counterparts. The image quality produced by CCD scanners, however, is far superior to that produced by CIS scanners.

CIS, or Contact Image Sensor technology, is a more recent development in which the sensor array lies just under the scanner bed, so that the sensors catch reflected light directly. Since CIS scanners do not need a complex optical system, they are cheaper to produce and are smaller in size, resulting in portable, lightweight models that may be prove ideal for cramped desks. CIS sensors also contain on-board logic that consumes less power than CCD. But because the on-board logic utilizes space that would normally be used for the mirrors and lenses in a CCD to sense light, scans from a CIS scanner are lower in quality. As a result, most people tend to forego the slight savings that can be obtained from a CIS scanner in favor of getting higher-quality CCD models instead.

Connectivity & Interface

Most consumer-level scanners today will feature USB ports – either Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) on more recent models, or the earlier USB 1.1 standard. Hi-Speed USB is backwards compatible with the USB 1.1 and has a data transfer rate of 480 megabits per second (Mbps). Higher-end scanner models are likely to include the FireWire interface as well, allowing scanners to be used in advanced, professional such as audio / video transfer and data storage. Scanners with either USB or Firewire interface are hot swappable – which means the scanners can be plugged or unplugged from other devices to which they are connected without having to turn the scanners off and on. Older scanners will include SCSI or parallel ports, but you should not have to consider these legacy-type models – except you are using the scanner to connect to older computers. When shopping for a flatbed, any scanner with a Hi-Speed USB port should be purchase-worthy, but consider getting a model with dual Hi-Speed USB and FireWire interfaces to expand your range of possible connections to many other devices and peripherals.

Scan Speed

Speed specifications in flatbeds are hard to determine – except the scanner manufacturer provides the specs or the exact conditions in which material is scanned. Scan speeds can run from seconds to several minutes, depending on a wide variety of factors. For instance, to compare scan speed between two comparable models, one will need to know the size of the material being scanned, the resolution setting, the interface being used, and the processing speed and power of the computer to which the scanner is connected. Check speed claims carefully if these are made at all; it may help to do an actual or sample scan with the model of your choice, and see if you are satisfied with the reasons of the preview and actual scans. You could also check to see if your flatbed model has been reviewed in computer magazines or sites and rated for speed, as benchmark tests may give a more comprehensive picture on how fast the scanner runs.

Size of Scan Bed

Most flatbeds today will start out with a standard scan bed size of 8.5 "x 11.7", approximating the dimensions of a letter-size image or document. From there, various bed-size configurations could come into play, including 8.5 "x 14" to accommodate legal-size material, and 12 "x 17" for large, tabloid-size scanning. It's usually a good idea to consider a flatbed with a bed size that's beyond the bare minimum – in this case, larger than the barebones 8.5 "x 11.7". Not only can you fit larger-sized material onto the scan bed, you can also group some smaller pieces on the scan bed and perform batch scans (scanning in groups) to save time and effort.

Dynamic Range

The dynamic range of a scanner measures how well it can capture the tonal range of an image, ranging from the bright highlights to the dark shadows. Dynamic range is measured on a scale from 0.0 (perfect white) to 4.0 (perfect black), and the single number associated with a scanner indicates how much of that range can tell apart. The minimum and maximum density values that can be captured by a scanner are called Dmin and Dmax, respectively. If a scanner's Dmin was 0.2 and its Dmax was 3.0, then its dynamic range would be 2.8.

While dynamic range is a term often bandied about, in truth the spec is more important for film scanners used to scan slides, negatives, and transparencies – as these types of media have a BROADER range of tones compared to photos, and for which a scanner's higher dynamic range can make a difference. Most flatbed scanners will have a dynamic range of 2.8 to 3.0, but do not be surprised if you can not find it in the specs, as this is not critical information needed by the average user looking to scan photos or prints.

In selecting the scanner of your choice, consider the software that comes with it. Software will always include the scanner's own driver or scanning software, as well as a host of complementary programs such as image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop to which the scanned image is delivered; optical character recognition software like ABBYY FineReader Sprint for text scanning and OCR; color calibration software for higher-end scanner models; and even photo-repair software like DIGITAL ICE. Check for extras as well, such as proprietary or exclusive technologies. For instance, some Microtek dual-bed scanners (a flatbed for scanning photos, a separate bed for scanning film) include a technology called EDIT, which features glassless transparency scanning to eliminate artifacts such as Newton Rings and improve image quality.

The driver or scanning software is a critical component of your flatbed, as it will determine how easily and efficiently you will be able to perform your scans. Good scanning software will offer fast previews, automated settings if you wish to simply operations, and plenty of image adjustment or enhancement functions to scale images up or down in size, calculate input vs. output dimensions, set brightness and contrast, correct histograms, apply filters, and more. Microtek's ScanWizard scanning software, for instance, offers a standard interface for simplified and automated scanning, as well as an advanced interface for more detailed and sophisticated control of the entire scanning process. Make sure you find out what scanner driver and software bundles are included with your scanner before finalizing your purchase.

Flatbeds are able to extend their function and versatility when outfitted with accessories such as a transparency adapter or automatic document feeder.

The transparency adapter – which may also be known as a transparent media adapter – allows you to scan film and transparencies in addition to the photos that can be scanned by your flatbed. TMAs are installed easily, with the lid of the flatbed scanner removed completely and the TMA installed in its place. With its own overhead lighting, the activated TMA is able to control the amount of lighting it shines on the film to be scanned, preventing overexposure of the film and delivering correct image results. Usually included with purchasing a transparency adapter are any number of film templates or holders to scan various types of film, such as 35mm slides, 35mm filmstrips, 4 "x5" film, and medium format (6×6-cm up to 6×17-cm panoramic) film. Premium color targets for calibrating the scanner to obtain optimal film scans may also be part of the package.

The automatic document feeder, or ADF, enhances the document imaging potential of your flatbed scanner. ADFs allow continuous scanning of multi-page documents – anywhere from 50 to 100, or even more pages – for imaging or OCR. With an ADF attached to a scanner, you can simply put a sheaf of documents into the ADF, launch the OCR software for your scanner, and choose the appropriate settings for scanning pages of text. The pages can then be saved either as graphic or image files for reference and record keeping, or the pages can be prepared for OCR and further text editing.

In deciding on the flatbed scanner of your choice, see if it can accommodate a transparency adapter, automatic document feeder, or both. The additional options may cost a bit more, but the money spend will be worth it if these accessories allow you to do so much more with your flatbed, boosting your efficiency and extending the range of the scanner's functions.

Other components

A final element to consider in your flatbed scanner purchase will be your service and warranty options. Depending on the price and level of your scanner model, service and warranty options can be free for a limited period of time, with extended warranty options available if you think you need additional protection and security. Most manufacturers will offer some form of service and warranty plan; check to see if these are adequate and fit your needs. The best warranty will cover parts and labor, and a more intensive warranty for a shorter term may serve you better than a long-lasting but watered-down warranty. It may be a good idea to check what sort of technical support may be available with your flatbed purchase, and when online support, downloadable drivers, and update information can be obtained from the manufacturer's web site.
