Log Cabins In Spring: What You Should Know

Log cabins are more than just an aesthetic choice. You are making an investment in real estate that can not be understated. It is committing to a beautiful home with a high value, but that requires a bit of maintenance beyond what you would expect from a non-wooden home. Especially as the seasons change.

If you have a cabin, or you are planning on buying or building one, you should be prepared. Winter is over, and the warm weather means it is time to start thinking about preparing for Spring. Here are some things you need to know.

Winter May Have Done Some Damage

First of all, one of the biggest threats to wooden homes in general tends to be weather. Wet and cold can do a real number to the sealants and protections that are placed on the wood itself. The moment the snow melts you will want to take some time to go through the outside and inside perimeters of the house, searching for any cracks, chips, or wear on the surfaces.

One of the best things you can do is take a hose and spray the outside of your house. If your wood is properly stained the water will bead completely and run off without wetting the logs. If it is absorbed it means the previous stain has been eradicated by the winter weather. It is time to add a new one, before further damage can be done.

This can seem very expensive, at first glance. For a cheaper stain on a smaller cabin you are looking at anywhere from $ 500 to $ 700. For a larger cabin, or a better quality stain, you are closer to $ 1000 – $ 1300.

Keep in mind that this only necessary about every three to five years, and it protects your home from more expensive damage later on.

Leaks Are Easier To See

There are two different kinds of leaks that you have to protect yourself from. First is the leaks in the sealant itself. Similar to staining, a sealant leak can cause water to slip through the spaces between the logs. The second type is the air leaks around windows and doors.

You probably found these leaks during the winter, as you felt wet spots or cold spots inside the house. But finding the source was impossible thanks to the snow on the side of the walls. Now you should be able to see more clearly.

For leaks in the sealant, look for dark patches or cracks in the wood. This indicates waterproofing needs to be redone. If left unchecked, the log can rot and leave you with a major repair cost as you irreplaceably replace the wood

As for leaks around windows and doors, these are more common. They are also very easy to fix, as they just require a recaulking around the edges. If there are still problems, you may consider replacing doors or windows with thicker alternatives that fit more neatly into the frames. Often the need for this relocation will be dependent on the location of your cabin, and common weather problems in the area.

Plant Life Can Offer Some Challenges

Plants? What could they possibly do to your cabin? Actually, quite a lot. One of the most unexpected problems people with wooden houses are faced with is creeping of plant life near their home. Trees will grow thick roots toward the cabin, plants will pop up, and sometimes you will even find plants growing inside of the logs themselves, the vines pushing them apart and creating large gaps in the wood.

If you keep an eye on plants every Spring, you will be able to see any that are getting too close. From there you can can prune them, cut them down, or eliminate them in the case of weeds. This is also important if you have a garden, as so many log cabin owners do. Outside plants can entirely ruin the ecosystem of your garden, and poison the soil for certain plants.

Temperature Changes Lead To Wood Expansion and Shrinkage

This is another huge threat to your cabin you may not have considered. Wood is highly absorbent, which is why stains and sealants are so very critical to the health of your home. When logs get wet they will expand, weakening the wood in the process. When the weather warms up and they dry, they will shrink.

Repeated expansion and shrinkage will break down the strength of the logs and cause them to crack, chip, and even bend. Gaps will appear between each of the slabs. If you have bought a used cabin you may have noticed warps in the walls caused by this phenomenon. You will want to restain and replace any rotted wood as soon as possible.

Gotta Protect From Those Pests

Spring is a big time for pests, just as with the beginning of any major shift in season. Wood rot can invite pests into the logs themselves, such as termites or other insects. Mice, spiders, and even larger rodents can burrow into your home, slipping in through gaps in the outer walls.

You should have an inspection the moment you see any pests, even if it is just one. Because if there is one, there are likely hundreds, even thousands. The longer they are allowed to stay there, the harder the infestation will be to take care of.

How to Do a Cutback in Surfing

Many people who take up the sport of surfing and take the necessary time to learn how to ride waves will eventually begin to feel confident enough to try and start turning the surfboard on the wave face. One of the most natural feeling surfing manuevers is known as a “Cutback”, this surfing maneuver is generally one of the first types of turns that surfers will learn because it is performed on the wave face. It does not require a sharp bottom turn, a surfer does not have to perform this turn in the lip and surfers will generally not have a steep drop back down the wave face after performing a cutback. There are several variations of the cutback, you will often hear the term “slash” or “slash back”, “round house cut back” or “roundy” for short and it can sometimes be referred to as a “cutty” and once in a while simply called by its proper name “Cutback” – while the maneuver itself has various subtleties between when it should be a cutback or a round house, the general idea is that the surfer is maneuvering the board into an arching, carving or pivoting change of direction.

The most natural feeling cutback turn will be to drive along the wave face and begin to shift your weight back and onto your inside rail, this transfer of weight will allow your board to begin channeling the water out and away, as you apply pressure in this fashion the wave energy will continue to push back allowing the surfer to maintane speed, power and flow through the cutback, once the proper amount of weight has been applied the board will feel as if it is doing the turn for you and you will always need to have some type of exit strategy for your maneuver. A surfer cannot simply apply pressure to the inside rail and hope that the cutback completes itself, you must understand that at some point, normally within about 1 second, your maneuver will be finished and it will be time to transfer your weight to the opposite side of the board to bring the surfboard back around parallel to the wave face so you can regain any speed you may have burned off performing the maneuver.

Many skilled surfers will take their cut back 1 step further and perform a “round house cut back” this is begun, and executed the same as a normal cutback but the surfer will draw the turn out a little bit longer and then bank the surfboard into the white water that was chasing him from behind, this type of “rebounding” manuever can produce lots of speed as the surfer bounces off the whitewater back onto the wave face. The roundhouse cutback is often times executed as a way to stay near the pocket of the wave and it is a very valuable tool when surfing small to head high waves. When the waves become larger and much more powerful you will notice that surfers generally will perform this type of round house rebound much less often for two main reasons 1) the white water is much to powerful and unstable which makes it a very high risk to reward maneuver and 2) bigger waves already have the necessary power to push the surfer at great speeds so there is less of a need to perform more technical surfing tricks to gain additional speed.

The cut back surfing turn can be performed in both a “front side” and “back side” wave ride, similar techniques will be necessary to perform the cutback weather or not the surfer is riding front side or backside. It is very simple to remember that when you are going to attempt a cut back a series of events must occur in order for the maneuver to be completed with a flowing style. The proper weight transfer must happen with the back foot / inside rail, the surfer should always keep the upper body centered over the surfboard, and finally always look were you want to go. Generally because surfing requires great muscle memory once you train your body to go where you are looking, your body, mind and muscles will remember what they have to do in order to complete the maneuver. Now get out there and practice those cutbacks. Remember: The more time you spend in the water, the faster you will master your maneuvers.

In the "olden days", as my children so lovingly refer to the time when I was younger than they are, I had the privilege and good fortune to be in one of my high school's first woodworking classes that allowed girls. Important Camping Tips and Equipment

Well, a fair percentage of people like camping. Some of them, during weekends, would even desert their well-furnished bedrooms and pitch a tent in their gardens where they would then spend their nights.

Please be sensitized that camping that is done very often can be addictive.

Did you know that retired soldiers that have spent a good part of their service time staying in camps that are located in isolated places like forests, jungles, woods and mountains always burn with desire to go camping?

If you want to go camping at a very far place you should make a very good plan for your trip before you go. Always make sure that someone trustworthy who is not going with you knows the coordinates of the place that you are going to camp at.

The other thing he / she should know is the length of time you are going to spend away. This is a very important matter in case something bad happens to you.

I really feel obliged to share with you this story of what happened to one of our brothers while he was camping with his family.

The story goes like this, "On Saturday, at daybreak, this guy together with his wife and their two teenage sons got inside their Land-Rover and left their house.

They were going to be back on Sunday at noon.

Six hours later, their vehicle stopped and they all alighted and stretched their bodies. They were in an area that was colonized by savannah vegetation. The area was also infested with zebras, wild-beasts and antelopes. Although tired, the four quickly pitched up three tents.

The first tent was for the man and his wife, the second one was for the two boys whereas the third tent was for housing their camping provisions.

After they had their lunch, they left the camp and went west shooting videos and taking pictures. Towards sunset they returned to their camp. They were just some two hundred meters away from the camp when they saw something like a mound next to their tents. The third tent had been pulled down. That thing that had invited itself to their camp was a male elephant.

The four waited until the elephant decided to leave the camp. They watched it as it went eastwards slowly limping. Its left hind leg was injured. It had either been injured by another male elephant or perhaps some poets. They look their heads as they stopped next to the tents.

All the fruits, vegetables and bread that was in the tent had been eaten by the elephant. It had only left them some canned foodstuffs. It had also crushed two twenty liters water bottles.

After assessing the damage done by the elephant they identified the tent that had been pulled down. Later on they were enjoying their supper around the fire. Around 2300 hours when it was now time for them to go to bed, the boys told their parents point-blank that they were not going to spend a night inside their tent.

They were afraid that the elephant might return to the camp at night and cause serious havoc.

The father honored the boys' emotions and presented them with the key for the Land-Rover. After the boys had gone to the vehicle, he kissed his wife and then put off the fire and then they went to their tent.

On the following morning after breakfast, the man went to the vehicle. He wanted to park it under a tree before they leave the camp to tour the surrounding area like on the previous day. He turned the key but the vehicle could not start. The battery had been chewed away. The boys had left the car-radio playing music when they slept last night.

The radio had played the music the whole night until the battery discharged all its power.

They were now in real trouble! The nearest settlement was 75 miles away and they were around 10 miles away from a sandy road that could be referred to as a main road. And that sandy road was seldom used. All the phones that were in their possession had lost network. It was now obvious that their vacation had been ruined!

The man suggested to his family to remain behind mean he goes to search for someone who could assist them with a battery but his family disagreed. Without him on their side, they felt unsafe. They broke the camp and loaded their stuff into the vehicle. After locking the vehicle, they set off on foot eastwards carrying a few valuable items.

After covering around mile, they met a pride of lions that were coming their way. They quickly changed direction and ran southwards. On their flight they went through another pride that was resting. The lions were full, they did not attack them. Next to them, there was a carcass of a buffalo which they had filled and ate over the night.

They changed direction again and now ran westwards and changed direction many times. By the time they stopped running they were now all lost. None of them could tell the direction to the sandy road they had wanted to reach.

After undergoing tougher obstacles in the savannah for good five days, they were very fortunate to be found by game scouts who were scouting for poachers that had killed a rhino for its precious horn.

From the game scouts, they learn that the elephant that pushed down the tent that was housing their provisions had been probably attracted by the scent of apples. Elephants like apples!
