Nutrition Teamwork – How Vitamins and Minerals Work Together

Nutrition teamwork between vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals are team players, so if you want the most nutritional value from each meal, consider which foods work best together. Iron and Vitamin C are the best known nutritional “team” as they work together to increase each other’s absorption. So eating salad with your steak ensures greater absorption of both iron and Vitamin C.

Calcium and Vitamin D are another great team, although combining them into one meal takes a little more forethought. Dairy products are the chief nutritional source of calcium, while our bodies can create Vitamin D from sunlight. We can also absorb Vitamin D from food such as avocado or eggs, so if you don’t fancy drinking a milkshake while basking in the sun, throw a beaten egg into the milkshake or blend an avocado into a cup of Greek yogurt to make avocado dip (add lemon juice and garlic for extra flavour).

Nutrition “teams” can also consist of two minerals. Potassium and magnesium work together to maintain heart function and the neurological system. Magnesium also assists in the transportation of potassium around the body, so a magnesium deficiency can lead to a deficiency in potassium. Both minerals are readily available in most meats, fruits and vegetables, so the right levels can generally be achieved through a balanced diet. Coconut water is a rich and refreshing source of both potassium and magnesium, if you are concerned that you are not achieving the right levels through your everyday diet.

Vitamin A is an independent player, easily absorbed from highly coloured vegetables such as spinach and sweet potato, as well as from meats, eggs and dairy products. Once Vitamin A is stored in the liver, it relies on zinc for transportation into body tissues, so a lack of zinc will increase the risk of Vitamin A deficiency. The most common symptom of Vitamin A deficiency is night blindness, when vision fails to adjust to darkness. So if you lie awake at night feeling as if you’ve been blindfolded, consider a bowl of pumpkin soup before lunch and dinner to supplement your intake. (Stir a spoonful of tahini paste into the soup or nibble on the pumpkin seeds afterwards to ensure you also have enough zinc).

You can have fun matching your favourite foods with their strongest team-mates, but when this seems too complicated, consider some of the foods which work single-handedly as a complete “team”. Blueberries, for example, are a great source of both iron and Vitamin C. Milk contains Vitamin A and zinc, and salmon provides both Vitamin D and calcium. With a wide range of fresh foods available, there is a nutritious “team” to suit everyone at any time of the day.

Proper Food Storage

Eating foods that are high in sugar and saturated fats, along with too much caffeine and alcohol can trigger premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in many women. PMS is controlled by the hormone estrogen – too much or too little causes moods to fluctuate, depression, anxiety, food cravings and bloating about a week before a period begins.

To help keep estrogen levels balanced, avoid cravings for sweet and salty foods since they will magnify PMS symptoms, notes Sam Graci, nutritional researcher and author of the new book – The Food Connection: The Right Food at the Right Time. Stay away from dairy products and meats that are high in saturated fats, as well as caffeinated beverages, which raise the blood levels of estrogen and cause headaches, irritability and anxiety.

Everyone knows that, for instance, hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oils are highly unhealthy. Tons of studies and informative material have been published, yet there is a population segment that still falls into traps saying that margarine is a “healthier alternative for butter, full of vitamins”, when in fact the trans-fatty acids it contains surpass the “healthy benefits” it offers. For this particular case, all foods containing hydrogentated oils (if the law allows their production, though it shouldn’t) should have a health hazard warning (like those on the cigarette packs), saying something like “This product contains trans-fatty acids that increase the risk of heart disease”. Thus, people would be constantly reminded of the bad effects of such products on health.

Generally, when it comes to foods and dieting, people should be advised of the potential inconvenience that might occur due to some ingredients or the way the food is prepared.

Take for instance the case of the release of so many diets that are not documented, not officially controlled and approved, promissing great things but not being explicit about the great problems they generate. Such as the very popular Atkins, for instance, which is a real danger to health.

The excess accumulation of cholesterol can lead to a stroke or heart attack. This happens because the build-up of excess cholesterol begins to clog the blood vessels leading to arteriosclerosis. It is believed that the overall incidence of strokes and heart attacks could be reduced by as much as 50% if Americans could reduce their cholesterol level by 25%. In fact, for every 1% of lowered blood cholesterol, the chances of having a heart attack are reduced by 2%.

However, all cholesterol is not bad, as most know by now. There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL helps to remove excess fats from your blood while high LDL is known to lead to a higher incidence of strokes and heart attacks.

In our house, snacks are almost a way of life. Particularly in the summer, while we travel to the creek by day and out of town on the weekends, snacks take a central roll in getting us where we want to go in a healthy way. A good snack can help alleviate the afternoon blahs as well as prevent low blood sugar after a meal that was hours ago.

When it’s hot outside, whole fresh fruit is an excellent option. Fruit is packed with vitamins and minerals as well as water and electrolytes. Most people tolerate fruit well, especially when it is coupled with some protein. An apple or pear, halved and cored, filled with almond, peanut, or macadamia nut butter tastes great and is filling. Softer fruits like apricots or plums are great the same way, or filled with chopped walnuts.

If vegetables are your favorites, try the old standby, celery filled with nut butter. Baby carrots meet their match when dipped in a puree of black-eyed peas, garlic, olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Add some sesame butter (tahini) to this mix for a great hummus alternative. Any veggie tastes great with feta cheese crumbled on top or packed inside.

Here are the grains you should be eating:

* Brown rice – contain many amino acids that help rebuild skin tissue

* Whole grains – contain folic acid, magnesium, and vitamin E, B vitamins, minerals, and fiber

* Oats – use them in the morning with honey or raisins. Oats have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and help to keep you regular.

Seeds and nuts

* Almonds – Almonds contain protein, the B vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Use them as a snack. These small nuts help to build muscles and tissue.

* Flax seeds – These seeds are known for containing plenty of omega 3 oil, an essential oil for life. They also contain fiber when used ground up and put into smoothies. Omega 3 is also an anti-inflammatory oil, which is good for acne.

* Pecans – This is one of the good nuts to eat. It contains Vitamin A, B’s, C, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and potassium. Use them as a snack.

* Pine nuts – these nuts also one of the best to eat. They contain vitamin A, C, B’s, protein and iron.

* Sesame seeds – They are high in calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. They are helpful in relieving various skin diseases such as acne by reducing the swelling.

* Sunflower seeds – These seeds should be used as a snack. They are high in protein, calcium and vitamin A. They provide nutrients for building the whole body and are good for dry skin.

All of these nuts and seeds should be eaten raw. Heating and other processing will kill the life force of the nut or seed and also reduce the quantity of the vitamins and minerals.

Hotels – Your Home Away From Home

Hotels offer temporary accommodation to travelers and local residents alike. Some are simple, budget-friendly operations that are easy on the wallet. Others are extravagantly decorated and offer luxurious amenities. If you have a specific one in mind, make sure you book in advance to avoid complications in your travel plans. In addition, it's imperative to reserve your room if you'll be visiting a city during a busy travel weekend or a popular event.

The first thing to consider when booking a hotel is the ease of accessibility. Most guests are simply looking for a place to stay while they explore their surroundings or conduct their business. As a result, a booking at a convenient location will cut down on your time traveling to and from your lodging. You'll have more opportunities to sightsee, explore, and relax. Many businesses offer shuttle services to help you move about town. Do a bit of research when selecting a location that makes sense for your visit.

Another important consideration when booking is value. You'll usually be presented with many options when searching for accommodations. Check for seasonal or extended stay discounts, and always inquire about room rates to find one within your price range. When measuring value, it's important to consider the amenities offered at your prospective hotels. Always inquire in advance about the costs of in-room amenities to avoid any surprising charges and be particularly careful when sampling items from your mini-bar. Some bookings come with free meals and services, while others only include the bare minimum. Also, if you live a healthy lifestyle, consider staying at a place with a suitable pool or fitness room so you can maintain your regular exercise routine.

If you're traveling with others, make sure the location of your room is accessible. Some smaller hotels do not feature elevators and may pose an inconvenience when bringing your luggage to or from your room. Travelers who are concerned about the accessibility of their rooms should request a room on the lowest floor or request one near stairs or an elevator. In addition, many businesses employ porters who will gladly carry your luggage and other belongings for you in exchange for a tip.

Refer to the star rating system when making your booking. Higher rated businesses typically offer more amenities, better views, and greater customer service, but that is not always the case. It's possible to find a steal and book a room at a higher-rated establishment for less than you would at a one or two-star business.

If you're visiting a city for the first time, stay somewhere that has excellent guest services so you can get good recommendations on restaurants and tourist destinations. Never be afraid to ask questions about the area you're staying in and definitely inquire about popular establishments for locals as well as tourists. Remember to book at a place that comes with good reviews and do not forget to pack your toothbrush.

How to Plan Your Ski Vacation

Imagine spending your upcoming vacation gracefully gliding down fresh powder on tree speckled slopes, and enjoying your evening nestled up with your loved one or meeting interesting new people around a fire. If you have taken a vacation at one of the many luxury ski hotels around New Mexico, you know this dream is well within reach. Armed with this how-to guide, there is nothing stopping you from planning a truly epic ski vacation that will not break the bank.

Rent Rather Than Buy

If you are a beginner or do not ski often, buying equipment is expensive and makes little sense. Instead, rent your skis or boards, boots, and necessary accoutrements. Not only will this tactic save you money, but will save you the hassle of carrying the equipment back home. Skiers and snowboarders can usually rent their equipment within a range of $30 and $50 dollars a day. You can often rent equipment at the resort for maximum convenience, but contacting an in-town outfitter beforehand and conveying your needs is likely to save you time and money.

Lift Tickets

Often lift tickets are the most expensive aspect of snowboarding or skiing. You can typically get a discount of around 5% for buying your tickets online, and you may be able to get the scoop on limited time deals and e-coupons by signing up to your favorite resorts’ mailing lists, especially immediately after a major holiday. Additionally, the middle of the week is a typical slow period for most mountains, so you can usually achieve a cheaper price, and less of a crowd on the lifts or on the slopes.

There are a variety of different types of lodging, ranging from the expensive and indulgent on-slope lodge, to the luxuriously cozy and quaint hotel in the village. You can find deals allowing you to, in some cases, literally ski out of your hotel room, for as low as $110 per night per person. However, staying in the village and shuttling to the resort is a great way to save money, and often see more of the local nightlife in the town.

Meals and Entertainment

Depending on your priorities, meals may be the most expensive aspect of your trip, especially if you choose to dine in the resort’s ski lodge, restaurant, or bar. Usually there is a pretty steep mark up for food and drink items bought on site. You can save money by packing a backpack with snacks and drinks bought from the village, or a small cooler with sandwich materials. Prioritize meals and entertainment so that you are certain to try the best the town has to offer, but not for every meal, so you still have some cash for other splurges.

For beginners, the cost of lessons are essentially unavoidable. While it may be tempting for you to save money by letting a friend or family member teach you, this can often lead to avoidable mistakes and injuries. Instead, seek training from a seasoned and impartial trainer. Beginner’s classes usually only take a few hours and can save you from some of the embarrassment of falling down a lot trying to teach yourself.

How to Build a Cedar Compost Bin

Building a compost bin of your own can be an extremely simple process. It can also be a complex one that turns out your dream compiler. It all depends on what you want in the end. Some gardeners stick to forming premed wood pallets into a square, forming an instant composter. Others take the time to do more complex bins that will last a lot longer.

Here's how to build a cedar compost bin that's not too tricky to make, but will last you more than a few years. Do not get discouraged – composting is not all that hard!

First, you'll need to select your wood. Cedar is an excellent choice, since it resists weather and rot, but some people choose other options as well. Avoid wood that has been treated with any kind of conservative, however. These chemicals can leach into your compost or the ground below the pile, and cause real problems. Stick to natural wood, and your compost will be a lot healthier.

For a basic compiler, you'll need seven three foot lengths of 2 "x6" cedar. You can make the cuts yourself, or have the lumber yard do it for a small fee. You'll also need four pieces of 2 "x2" or 4 "x4" cedar in four foot lengths, and plenty of three inch galvanized nails.

Start by sharpening the ends of your 2x2s to create stakes, or by digging holes in which to place your 4x4s. Remember – this does not have to look good. It just has to keep the bin in one spot. Nail the three foot long boards to your posts to form a square, leaving space between the board to aerate the pile, and leaving the top board off the side of the bin that'll form the front.

If you're using 4x4s, it's best to bury their ends in the ground first, then nail your boards on. If you'll be using the 2x2s, you can make the bin, then drive the corner posts into the ground with a mallet. Just leave enough of a post to support the compost bin below the ground. Once you've created the bin, it's ready to use. You may wish to start your compost using some already finished compost or other additives that act as activators. Grass clippings or well composed chicken manure are common choice.

Remember to turn the pile from time to time with a pitchfork (that's what the open side is for) and keep an eye on it to make sure it does not attract pets. Keep the balance of vegetable scraps and yard waste correct, and you'll soon have good quality compost for your garden. It's really that easy. If you have a lot of waste to compost, just build additional bins alongside the one you already have.

Getting Everyone on Board With Mac OS X

Business technologies are split between the spreadsheet and the art of business. Industry and environment dictates how a company will integrate computer network technology into a custom business process.

Choosing the right network is one thing but creating one that performs well under pressure is another.

You see, the infrastructure for today's business technology is divided as well. Fiber optics and copper wire share the duty of connecting networks inside and outside the office. Both methods accept a wide variety "network protocols" such as Fiber Channel, Infinaband for high speed connections, and Ethernet. Ethernet is the most common network grid and has been connecting computers since the 1980's. It continues to be something more widely accepted and standardized today.

The need for custom computer protocols for business will remain as long as technology evolves but the designs that drive them have also improved and will continue to improve. Customarily, Apple's Mac OS is the leading choice of digital art and design firms. More and more artists who work with digital print, video, and audio, reliably on Mac computing to perform as the editorial backbone when doing pre and post production. A designer can easily produce content-rich products people pay for in print, video and audio using Apple's Mac OS X platform. Using the best tools for the job insures a high-quality product and the production company is able to compete for more work and better pay.

Production companies get what they want with Mac OS X. Now inject a deadline and give these same content designers no way to interact digitally. A firm without a network has editors who work alone. They work alone without taking a file from one computer and physically downloading onto another computer is considered collaborating. The situation is real, the lost productivity is real, and the security risk is real. Having more content designers working together means more files to share.

Redundant: Exceeding what is necessary.

Production companies without shared network capabilities report that as business begins to increase, more and more productivity is lost to processes that have nothing to do with being creative. Ask a small design firm about doing more with less, they usually say something like "I look around the office near a deadline and a lot of what I see is designers tracking down files, copying files, formatting files, back and forth, back and forth with the files on a portable disk or flash drive. " "It's disheartening."

Lost productivity will hold a company back from moving forward when sales and production are up. Creating more productivity equals getting more done. Removing redundancy is the easiest way to get more work done while keeping costs down.

We want to know how to get everyone using a Mac on the same network where projects can be locally stored and accessed from anywhere. "The computing power of Mac OS X is outstanding when combined with editing software packages like Final Cut Pro. that when employees working with Apple computers have equal access to team projects, and collaboratively together, it improved work flow, performance, and morale dramatically.

Finally, eliminate down-time due to an over abundance of archived flash drives, hard disks, and peripherals that require physical retrieval and insertion of data into a new work space. Use redundancy to your benefit with RAID "Redundant" file sharing and archive capabilities. Take advantage of existing infrastructure with Small Tree Ethernet connections that dramatically adjust the cost of upgrading to a network that works. These network solutions for Mac OS X puts control back in the hands of editors who Utilize MAC OS X, the safest and most forward looking operating system today.

It's all about scalable Mac networks for production companies focused on the Mac platform. They include service and support from experienced network engineers that are very knowledgeable about creating dependable solutions which are rigorously tested and engineered. All innovations are designed to perform above expectations using the best of the best Ethernet networking and shared storage Mac OS X configurations! Safe, reliable, and cost effective GraniteStor networks are the most reliable and advanced Ethernet networks available for pre and post production needs.

Designer of simple-to-install, affordable Mac-based networking and shared storage products, Small Tree Communications is the premier multi-port Ethernet networking technology provider for OS X customers, enabling cost effective Ethernet shared storage technology.

Good and Bad Feng Shui: What to Look for When Buying a Home

Have you ever felt that a home just didn’t feel good? Or that it had bad vibes? Sometimes the signs of good and bad Feng Shui are not so obvious. The following outlines what makes for good and bad Feng Shui in a home. You can use these as a general guideline when shopping for a home.

Even when it comes to Feng Shui, it’s still location, location, location. Why? Because you can’t change it! You can change price and condition but not location. SO that is where we will start:

1. Preowned? Good Feng Shui if the previous owners are moving to a bigger house, job promotion and are moving away or won the lottery – this would all be good energy.

2. Lot: wider in the back or square is good Feng Shui. Reverse pie lots are not. Square or rectangular shaped lots are considered ideal.

3. Cul-de-sac: be sure not to be at the T intersection of the cul-de-sac to the road – this considered bad Feng Shui. You will end up getting the glare of headlights into the front of your house in the evenings.

4. Fire Hydrants: can’t have those in front of the house: bad Feng Shui as it represents your wealth being ‘washed’ away.

5. Bedrooms: should not be located over the garage, kitchen or laundry room. In addition beds should not share a common wall with a toilet. Master bedrooms should ideally be north facing and the bed should back onto the south wall facing north. In addition there should be no mirrors across or beside the bed.

6. No bathrooms over a dining room or kitchen. (This would seem obvious – no leaking toilets over my Turkey dinner!)

7. Home office: should be in the southeast portion of the home. Morning sun brings good energy and the south sun provides daytime sunshine to keep you energized throughout the day.

8. Homes facing south and backing north are ideal.

9. The flow of the home is important. The front door should not open up directly to the up or down stairwells. Nor should the front door ‘see’ the back door (have direct line from front door to back door). This allows the chi or energy to walk right on through the back door. The energy should be allowed to meander back and forth throughout the home. You also do not want to see the fireplace from the front door.

10. The kitchen, nor the stove should be in the centre of the home. Nor should the kitchen face a toilet door (bathroom). This door should be closed at all times.

11. Office desks should back onto a solid wall – not a window. Nor should a desk or bed face an angled wall.

12. Living too close to a cemetery brings grief into the air – not a good thing.

Feng Shui’s aim is to balance to all aspects of our lives by creating an environment that has good chi or energy. You can do this by firstly looking for a home that fits the locational aspects. The interior of the home can always be changed. But the more you know up front about good energy – or Feng SHui the sooner you will be able to recognize it in your next home.

Happy House Hunting!

Freezer Facts – Learn Facts, Tips and Tricks About Freezing Your Food

As someone who is passionate about food, your primary concern should be to find fresh, quality ingredients that allow you to cook delicious, healthy meals. Freezing can be a great way to improve the shelf life of a given ingredient and is a useful skill to learn use in the kitchen. Since you may find yourself needing to freeze something, here are some great tips and tricks to help you succeed.

When cooking for yourself, a loved one, or more importantly a client, every aspect of the meal needs to be taken into consideration. From maintaining a clean, healthy, and organized work space, to the temperature and presentation of everything you cook. For a lot of ingredients, especially proteins such as scallops and shrimp, freezing is without a doubt the best way to go to retain their original, fresh flavor.

This works great for a lot of vegetables too. Using the freezer more often can allow you to both preserve the perfect freshness of your ingredients and also work to make preparing your meal that much easier and less time consuming.

Condensation is the moisture that collects on the surface of the food if it is still hot or warm when you put it in the freezer. When you defrost this, the excess moisture will make your food soggy and tasteless.

Chill cooked foods uncovered, and then cover the seal before freezing to prevent another source of condensation.

Drip Loss

Drip Loss is the term for leakage of a natural moisture that occurs during a defrosting. The moisture expands as it turns into ice, causing the food fibers to splinter and break. This is what causes limp or soggy textures after defrosting. If the food is chilled before freezing, the ice crystals that form will be smaller, causing less damage to the fibers therefore meaning less drip loss. The result will be better in texture and flavor compared to the food that was not cool before placed in the freezer.

Freezer Facts Tips and Tricks

If ice cream thaws it should not be re-frozen.

Fruits and vegetables should be frozen at their peak of flavor.

The freezer in your refrigerator is not the same as a food freezer. It is best used for storing foods for short periods only. Foods should be frozen as quickly as possible and temperatures should be 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Jelly, salad dressing and mayonnaise do not freeze well on bread products.

When freezing casseroles, cook for a shorter period of time than normal, then cool quickly to stop cooking action. Make sure it is packed as solidly as possible, the fewer air spaces the better.

To prolong the freezer storage time for roasted meats, cover them with gravy.

Meatloaf may be frozen cooked or uncooked.

Potatoes will become mushy when frozen in stews and casseroles.

Any bakery item with a cream filling should not be frozen. They will become soggy.

Custard or meringue pies do not freeze well. The custard tends to separate and the meringue will become tough.

Mashed potatoes freeze well.

Waffles and pancakes may be frozen, then thawed and cooked in the toaster.

Seal all freezer wrapped foods as well as possible so that freezer burn will not occur.

A good trick when you go away on vacation is to place a baggie with a few ice cubes in the freezer. If a power failure occurs while you are gone and the food thaws and then refreezes, you will know about it when you get home.

Baker’s yeast will freeze for years without going bad.

If you freeze wild rice it will last for 3-4 months instead of a week in the refrigerator.

A corned beef roast can be kept for up to one week in the refrigerator and up to two weeks if frozen.

Always remove meat from store packages and re-wrap using special freezer paper or aluminum foil if you are planning to freeze meats for more than 2-3 weeks.

Chops, cutlets and hamburgers should be freezer wrapped individually. This will assure maximum freshness and convenience.

Brown sugar won’t harden if stored in the freezer.

Unsalted butter can be stored in the freezer indefinitely if it is wrapped and sealed airtight. Salted butter can be stored for a shorter period of time in its original container with no wrapping.

Whipped cream; drop dollops of whipped cream on a cookie sheet, then freeze before storing in plastic bags.

Freeze eggs whole or separated. Egg whites may get tough when frozen in a potato or macaroni salad.

Flour can be frozen.

Honey can be frozen in ice cube trays. If the honey becomes granulated, simply place the cubes in a jar and place in very hot water.

Do not buy frozen foods unless they are frozen solid.

Keep a frozen food inventory, foods tend to get lost in a large freezer.

Frozen foods are more nutritious than canned foods.

Date all frozen foods using a piece of tape or permanent marker pen.

Refreezing foods will lower their quality.

Remember the longer you freeze, the better chances are to lose a percentage of the food quality.

How to Sing With Ease – Singer's Secrets Chapter One

This work will engage you in the basics of this modern pedagogy and introduce you to a pure singing voice that you probably didn't't know you had. By expression "singing open," "covered," "dark," "nasal," "in the head," or "in the neck," "forward," or "back are expressions that correspond to common sensations thought to be used in proper singing; but they are ideas that are incorrect in truly utilizing the true mechanisms within the vocal cords themselves. As long as the causes of those sensations are unknown and everyone has a different concept of them. produce a pure and free vocal production but never fully succeed. This is due to either having exposure to improper vocal training or simply no training at all.

The physiological components of the processes of singing are not plainly enough exposed or accurately understood. As complicated as this may seem, this work will dissolve that complexity and expose only those parts of the vocal anatomy and mechanisms that are needed in modern singing. Every serious artist has a sincere desire to help others reach the goal– the goal towards which all singers are racing: to sing with range, power and agility without effort and That is exactly what you will learn in this book.

The true art of song has always been possessed and will always be possessed by such individuals as are dowered by nature with all that is needful for it– that is, healthy vocal organs, uninjured by vicious habits of speech; a good ear, a talent for singing, intelligence, industry, and energy.

In former times eight eight to four were devoted to the study of singing– at the University of Berkley, for instance. Most of the mistakes and misunderstandings of the student could be discovered before he was able to perform public ally, and the instructor could spend much more time in correcting the flaws that the student is unable to correct himself or herself properly.

But the Vocal Arts today must be pursued differently, through precise correct pedagogy. Artists that are turned out in ancient methodology based schools, or by teachers who give lessons ten or twelve hours a day, usually suffer improvement due to the lack of personal or individual guidance. In two years they receive a certificate of competency, or at least the diploma that still leaves the student with a poorly manufactured vocal production and usually leads to vocal apnea.

Why Study Calculus?

As part of a subcategory within my "Why Study Math" series, I am pleased to introduce a new group or articles that will touch upon some of the higher branches of mathematics. The purpose of these writings will be to introduce people-particularly the lay person-to some of the more advanced reaches of this subject. Many people unfortunately never get to glimpse the fascinating beauty of the higher realms of mathematics such as the Calculus, and far too many are under the mistaken belief that this field is only reserved for the so called erudite and genius crowd. Not so I say. Give me a chance and I will be happy to accommodate you.

The end result of mathematics, I firmly believe, is to clarify not mystify. This notwithstanding, the very nature of what mathematics is often trying to explain is so complicated that easy and clear methods are insufficient. In order to tackle something as complex as an explanation of the DNA double helix, for example, or the instantaneous rates of change among quantities like temperature against time in a rate of cooling experiment, ordinary arithmetic simply will not suffice. In fact, one of the inventors of the Calculus, Sir Isaac Newton, in order to solve the problems he was working on, had no choice but to devise a higher branch of mathematics because of the insufficiencies of the existing ones. But then again, this is the driving force among all newventions and discoveries.

The Calculus is a branch of mathematics that deals with things like limits, derivatives, and integrals, and these topics all hinge upon the idea of infinitesimal quantities and infinity. Because calculus relations heavily on the lower branch of mathematics called algebra, it is often referred to in my articles as "glorified" algebra. Truly if you want to learn calculus, and you already have a good handle on algebra, then you will find yourself comfortable with this more advanced subject. One of the many beauties of the calculus is that that it works very well in the real world, describing all kinds of physical and natural phenomena and solving all kinds of practical problems.

As I launch this new series of articles, I will be talking about these interesting applications of calculus to the real world. Without getting too technical, we will explore a diverse range of topics that the calculus has opened to us. From the calculation of irregularly shaped areas to finding the maximum profit that a business can earn according to a specified law, we will enter an exotic realm of the universe where things like infinity and 0 take on a whole new role. Use of Formwork in the Build Up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner with the first match kicking off in less than two years. During the event, all eyes will naturally be on South Africa when the immense influx of football fans, tourists, world leaders and news reporters will paint a picture of South Africa's capabilities to the rest of the world.

Major cities such as Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth are already showing the signs that the world's most popular sports tournament is coming. This is without doubt the largest event to be hosted by South Africa, and the incredible transformations taking place in these cities are a treaty as to how important a successful implementation of the tournament is for South Africa.

South Africa is rising to the challenge admirably by using construction and formwork for building state-of-the-art sports complexes and stadiums, upgrading major airports, revamping major cities, overhauling the transport system through the creation of the Gautrain and extending freeway sizes along with fixing roads and existing public transport systems. With the incredible formwork and construction happening in South Africa right now, by 2010, the country will be able to host a highly successful World Cup tournament and illustrate to millions of people around the world what a capable and incredible country South Africa is.

Sports Stadiums
Five brand new stadiums are under construction for the FIFA 2010 World Cup including Green Point Stadium (the previous Green Point Stadium was demolished in 2007), the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth ( which, when complete, will be the fastest constructed sports stadium in the world) and the King Senzangakhona Stadium in Durban.

Other stadiums include the Soccer City Stadium and Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria and the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg. These stadiums each require huge construction processes and would not be able to be completed without formwork. With the use of formwork, construction companies are able to create magnificent and world-class stadiums, for example, the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga has been designed to mix modern architecture with trusted formwork and construction techniques.

18 concrete and steel giraffe structures provide support for the steel roof to the stadium which will have used 50000 cubic meters of poured concrete, 6,000 tons of steel, 90000 cubic meters of formwork concrete slabs used to create retaining walls and sheer walls to raise the Mbombela Stadium from the ground.
The Green Point Stadium in Cape Town will have made use of 130000 cubic meters of concrete, 390000 square meters of formwork, 12000 tons of reinforcing steel, six million bricks and a steel cable tensioned glazed roof.

The Gautrain
The Gautrain is an underground railway system under construction in Johannesburg to help ease the pressure on public transport during the tournament and to help traffic flow in the city. The planned route of the train is run between four main stations – Johannesburg, Sandton, Tshwane and OR Tambo Airport and also to additional stations – Rosebank, Marlboro, Midrand, Centurion, Hatfield and Rhodesfield.

Formwork is a major part of the Gautrain construction as the entire railway runs underground and requires underground drilling and high strength supporting walls. There are already 783 precast segments manufactured for lining the tunnel. In Midrand there is a precast yard which is capable of pouring 120 cubic meters of concrete per hour. Various bridges along the railway are under construction, requiring the use of M-Beam Formwork which is transported via trucks to the sites where the bridges are under construction.

Roads and Infrastructure
Because of the influx of people expected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the need for reliable infrastructure and transportation has increased greatly. With so many tourists expected to flock to South Africa during the tournament, the road system in the country is receiving a major upgrade. For example, the eThekwini (Durban) municipality is upgrading the Western Freeway. As it is one of the country's busiest roads and would have been unable to cope with the heavy traffic expected during the World Cup tournament in terms of traffic flow and the road strength.

To ease congestion, both directions of the freeway are being extended to house additional lanes, making the freeway a four or five lane structure. Formwork is especially important when freeway bridges are under construction due to the difficult nature of constructing such heavy structures at a height. Formwork can be pre-cast and driven in or completed by scaffolding formwork.

City and Buildings
Many city centers in South Africa have suffered tremendous neglect as crime levels in the CBDs have kept the areas unpopular and unmaintained. With the upcoming FIFA World Cup, major overhauls of the cities in South Africa are underway to create an attractive and memorable experience for everyone involved in the World Cup tournament.

In Johannesburg, the NASREC Expo Center is currently being renovated for use as the media center during the tournament with the outside areas already becoming more aesthetic with paved pathways. The CBD in Cape Town is seeing many benefits from the renovations happening in the center – many old buildings are being returned into their former glory with careful renovations while the V & A Waterfront has just been extended.

The construction on the Waterfront has included a major emphasis on parking but also on increasing the size of the extremely popular building to include more shops, restaurants and activities for the influx of tourists. All of the major cities in South Africa are experiencing such renovations, increasing the attractiveness of South Africa to the foreigners who will visit the country during the famous tournament.

Formwork has been a major contributor to the construction efforts underway in South Africa. Using formwork, the country is producing first-rate sports stadiums, superior infrastructure, renovated, new and stylish buildings, better transport systems and generally, a modern, world-class destination. Through formwork, South Africa has the potential to prove to the world just how capable the country is of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup successfully.

The Colors of Siding

One of the great things about siding is that it adds style and character to any home. These days, homeowners can choose from more siding materials and colors than ever before. The right color can really make or break a home's appearance, so before you set out to make your choice, keep the following guidelines in mind:

Know the trends

When it comes to the color of your siding, it's a good idea to strike a balance between what catches your eye and what is generally popular. One of the trendiest colors in siding today is cypress, a soft green shade that looks great on its own and offers to blend well with landscaping. Other popular colors include those that are neutral in nature; tan, gray, cream, and beige are all wise color choices for new siding.

Understand the effects of light versus dark

Lighter siding colors will add a degree of warmth to your house and make it look larger than it actually is. Darker colors, on the other hand, will usually end up making a house look smaller. Before you make a decision, consider the effect that the siding color might have given the size and structure of your house.

Forget about the rainbow

Contrary to what some might think, siding is not automatically available in an array of colors. When it comes to vinyl siding, your choices are usually limited to a specific set of neutral tones unless you are really willing to spend extra on a custom or offbeat color. Fortunately, if the color you want is not available in vinyl, then you always have the option of installing wood siding and then painting it the color of your choice.

Look around the neighborhood

A good way to get an idea of which siding colors will look best on your home is to walk around the neighborhood and take note of similar houses. You'll also want to make sure that your house reasonably matches the houses that surround it. While your siding should help your home stand out, it should not make it stick out like a sore thumb.

Do not go too crazy with color

Customers should remember that siding is supposed to increase the value of their homes and help add to their buyer appeal. A shocking blue or funky pink exterior may tickle your fancy, but think about it from a potential buyer's perspective. If selling your home is a possibility at some point in the future, then you might want to adjust your taste to one with more universal appeal. You can always add a splash of color by incorporating unique shutters; Egypt, better yet, surround your home with colorful flowers and keep the built-in stuff simple.

Siding installation is a great way to give your home a makeover, and the right color choice can really do wonders for your house's exterior. Talk to your contractor if you're having difficulty choosing a color. Chances are, he'll be able to help you find the perfect shade to compliment the size, structure, and surroundings of your home.

How To Get Rich In A Short Period Of Time-Building Wealth

How to get rich in a short period of time is what most people are looking for these days. However, most people today have an antique view of personal finance. Simply put, they are passing on to their children the financial advice that their parents once passed on to them. But most of these people are not in a better financial position than their parents were. Why repeat the mistakes of the past? If it did not work then, it certainly will not work now. The crystal ball shows that the financial world is changing at an accelerated speed before our very eyes.

If being wealthy is a desirable position to be in, then it's safe to say that one can not garner wealth solely on a nine to five job. For example, you are headed to the mall, you leave your credit and debit card at home, and you keep a monthly allowance at home to avoid going back and forth to the bank. When it is finished, discipline yourself to wait until your next allowance. These are small steps, but they can add up to large savings.

If these four cards are brought to the table, the sky is the limit. You're as strong as your weakest link. If your commitment is weak, you will not make it. If you are not willing to discriminate yourself, then a lack of discipline will be your downfall. It all boils down to, how much do you want to become rich. If you think the task is too great for you, then you are already defeated. You'll be surprised at what you can do once you put your mind into it. The mind is the most powerful tool of the human body.
