Polystyrene Insulation – Foam Board Insulation

Foam Board Insulation is based on covering indoor or outdoor surfaces of building in order to prevent heat losses to the surrounding.

There are several material used for the production of these foam core boards, of which Polystyrene is the most widely used.

Polystyrene is an aromatic polymer made from styrene monomer. Polystyrene is among the most used types of plastic for general use. Chemically, polystyrene is a long-chain hydrocarbon, with every other carbon molecule connected to a phenyl group. Discovered in 1839, polystyrene became ubiquitous, being used in the production of a variety of objects both for general and industrial use.

Polystyrene, in its foam form proved to be a very good thermal insulator and damping material. This quality made it well suited for the production of foam core boards used in foam board insulation, and also for the construction of non-weight bearing structures.

The foam boards made from polystyrene foam are of two main types, differenting by manufacturing process and by the properties they exhibit.

The one most widely used form of polystyrene foam core board is Molded Expanded Polystyrene.

Molded Expanded Polystyrene is a closed-cell material, which, molded in desired shapes is used for making various items. The most common use of Molded Expanded Polystyrene is packaging material, taking advantage of its excellent damping qualities.

Making foam boards from MEPS, implying mixing unexpanded polystyrene beads with a blowing agent and pouring the mixture into a container which is heated to allow the beads to expand. The expanded beads are injected into a pressurized mold, transforming them to foam. The foam is then shaped to make the boards, which is used for the foam board insulation.

The second type of boards is those made from Extruded Expanded Polystyrene, or XEPS. While similar to MEPS, XEPS is made by liquefying polystyrene pellets mixed with several chemicals and then adding a blowing agent which forms gas bubbles. This thick liquid is then extruded trough a die, and after cooling is cut and shaped as needed.

Advantages of Ash Wood

The Ash tree belongs to the Oleaceae (olive) Family with about 70 species in the world. Of these the White Ash and Black Ash are the ones that are used predominantly in the lumber industry. Ash wood trees grow throughout the world in places as wide apart as North America, Europe, North Africa and South West Asia. White Ash has a clear white to pale yellow sapwood, with the heartwood leaning more to the light to medium brown tones. Due to greater supply, Ash furniture tends to be more easily available and is cheaper too, in comparison to Oak. Ash wood has the same high quality standards as Oak, but, at a more affordable cost.

Versatile

Ash wood is versatile and can be used in a variety of applications from tools to sports equipment and even furniture. Black Ash is a medium dense wood, similar to a Black Walnut, but softer than White Ash. Black Ash can be used for making baskets and other more detailed work because of its layered characteristics.

White Ash is often substituted for Oak. The wood of White Ash is similar to Red Oak in appearance and characteristics; when stained, it looks like Oak as the grain pattern of the two woods is similar. This allows Ash wood to be used in different types of furniture, modern contemporary Ash furniture designs, and also more traditionally designed furniture.

Ash wood is odor free because of which it can be used to make serving utensils.

Easy to Handle and Durable

Ash is a “user-friendly” wood, and takes easily to nails, screws and glue. Though it is hard, the wood bends well and allows a smooth finish because stain and paint adhere well to the wood.

The wood of Ash is typically easy to sand and machine. It is also easy to carve.

This is resistant to decay in the heartwood. This makes it durable and requires low maintenance.

Shock Resistant

Ash Wood has a Janka rating of 1320, making it between red and white Oak in hardness. This makes it a good choice for flooring in high traffic areas, or areas that are susceptible to rough usage, such as for use in kitchens. Ash hardwood floors are durable and shock resistant. Though it is hard, the wood bends well.

Ash wood has the best strength to weight ratio and is therefore used to make baseball bats. Since most players do not want a bat greater than 32 oz. this becomes significant. It is also used for tool handles and other sports equipment.

How Much Do Builders Make on a House?

After all is said and done, how much does your builder walk away with?

Do you wonder how a builder decides what to charge for a new home? You know that you pay for the lumber, carpet, fixtures and all the details, but how is the final price determined?

Buying a home requires a lot of money. The cost is based on many different factors, including the construction, land and the marketing and administrative costs for the builder. And of course, the net profit.

Does it sound any easier to understand?

Most builders will charge in a similar way. The construction of the house will account for approximately 50% of the base price of the home.

There are several costs within the construction factor. There are direct costs, which are the sticks and bricks. These are all of the materials that go into the home, from the lumber to concrete and windows to carpet.

The work is usually mostly provided by subcontractors hired by the builder.

Then there are construction labor costs. These are the costs associated with work performed by the builder’s employees. These go along with the indirect costs, which are usually performed by the builder’s employees. They include the correction work that is done to fix any mistakes by subcontractors.

You will also be charged the construction interest on the home. To finance the purchase of the lot and the cost of construction before you pay the builder, the builder takes out a bank loan. The cost of the loan, including all interest and fees, will be figured into the base price you pay.

The actual cost of the lot can be between 25% and 40% of the base price. With the cost of land constantly going up, especially near metro areas, the lot portion has increased over the years. Added to your land costs are any off-site improvements, such as water and sewer lines, street developments, curbing and paving and driveways and sidewalks.

Many builders offer a discount on the base price, often by paying for points at settlement, to encourage first-time buyers. A discounted home will often have construction costs that equal 50%, lot costs of 30%, a discount of 3% and a 17% gross profit.

Out of the gross profit, the builder deducts administrative costs, marketing costs and taxes.

If you choose options, you could add 10% to 30% to the base price.

Surprisingly, builders walk away with less profit than you would expect. Net profits on the sale of a home often ranges from 2% to 6%. In general, the larger the home, the higher the net.

You can easily find out the net profits for builders that are publicly traded companies. You simply have to read their annual reports.

When you are contemplating the building of a home, sometimes you should shop around a bit. Compare the costs for similar homes offered by different builders. Ask the builder how much of the cost is construction. They may or may not tell you. But it never hurts to ask. You can use this figure to estimate the rest of the costs.

Starting Your Own House Clearance Business

Many of those who lose their jobs during a recession will find it tough to find another job and may start to think about investing in their own business with whatever redundancy pay they may have received. This can be a golden opportunity to become your own boss, but it takes hard work, determination and perseverance to make a new business successful and it rarely happens overnight.

It is always tempting when thinking about starting a business to do something you have always loved doing – make your hobby your job. But, sadly, in the majority of these cases the businesses just don’t succeed. This is mainly because they have been embarked upon with a personal bias and not from a purely business perspective. Whatever decision you might make about going it alone, that decision must always be a business one first and foremost.

The best approach to starting your own business is to research all those services or products that are required in both good and bad economic times.

A house clearance business is one such service that will always be in demand. More and more people are looking for this service sometimes simply to get their houses ready for sale. Or they might have moved and settled permanently abroad and now wish someone to clear out the house in readiness for selling it. Establishing a good business relationship with local estate agents can lead to regular business referrals.

But house clearance is most particularly required after a death in the family. The bereaved often do not want to clear the house at such an emotional time, and the act of disposing of a loved one’s belongings can be overwhelming. Relatives can struggle to sort out the belongings of the deceased whilst coping with their grief and the ongoing demands of work and family life. Or there may simply be no emotional ties and the deceased is a distant relative in another part of the country.

Whatever the reason, there is a booming business clearing out other people’s unwanted belongings.

Whilst local auctioneers do sometimes offer house clearance services, they are really looking for valuable items to sell in their auctions and are not usually interested in the junk. So if you are embarking on this type of business then you need to be prepared to clear everything and often to deal with people at a difficult time in their lives.

Many items that are unwanted by one individual can still be recycled or donated to charity so be sure to consider these options where possible.

To distinguish your business from the rogue element that operate bogus house clearance services it is worth joining the UK House Clearance Association.

Every member of the association makes some key commitments, which are simply good business practice:

· To provide a clear description, price and timetable for the house clearance to be carried out.

· To guarantee full liability insurance.

· To hold a current waste carrier’s license issued by the Environment Agency.

· To be courteous, competent, and committed to providing a high standard of service.

· To deal promptly and sympathetically with anything that may go wrong.

If you think this might be the business for you then it is a relatively easy business to start up with little capital outlay (so you might actually be able to save some of that redundancy cash). There are just some simple steps to take towards being your own boss:

Obtain liability insurance

When you are entering someone’s house and likely to be moving large and heavy objects, you must have the appropriate insurance against damaging either the fabric of the building or persons within it.

Obtain a waste carrier’s license from the Environment Agency

Dumping waste at municipal sites on a commercial basis requires a license. These are inexpensive and last for 3 years so apply for one well in advance of clearing that first house.

Decide which vehicle you need

If you don’t already own a van, you will definitely need one, but while you are still testing out your business idea, why not hire a van instead of buying one. That way you can decide which type of van is most suitable in your local area.

Advertise in the local press and online

The advantage of a small business like house clearance is that you can avoid expensive advertising costs by advertising your services in local publications and at local venues.

House Clearance is just one small business idea that is a service required whatever the economic climate and it is simple and inexpensive to start up. But there are many other such businesses that could mean the start of a new life as your own boss.

Wood Vs Metal File Cabinet

The metal file cabinet is among those in popular demand when it comes to organizing and storage needs. But today, there are even more choices, particularly when it comes to the material of the filing cabinet. File cabinets now come in plastic materials as well as genuine wood. A lot of people are now going for wooden materials for their cabinet, but which is better? Is it wood or metal?

A wooden filing cabinet can have both practical and aesthetic qualities. Oak is a popular choice in this case, since it offers a wide range of natural colors and patterns. White oak allows you to easily paint over it with different finishes from very dark to very light.

On the other hand, a metal filing cabinet can offer durability and strength. Thus, it is mostly preferred for use in offices to keep very important files. While they may not fit in most home decor, they may do well with modern interiors.

So which is better, a metal file cabinet or a wooden one? There isn’t one answer to this one. The most practical thing to do would be to first consider your basic requirements. What are you going to use the cabinet for? Where will you put it? For instance, if you’re going to put it in the patio, it will have to be weatherproof. You may then consider how you want your cabinet to look like. A wooden one matches more in a home setting, while a metal would probably fair better in an office setting.

Care Homes Benefit From Self Printed Door Signs

Recently care homes have been opting for door signs showing their patients names, and with an optional picture, as opposed to the traditional room number. This is due to the fact that residents are helped greatly by having their own name on their door to reassure them they have found their own room. Pictures also aid fellow residents of retirement homes who may be suffering from memory loss and therefore have trouble with names.

Door nameplates – personalized easily

Care homes are increasingly attracted to this option where the resident's name, and possibly their photograph, can be printed onto a piece of paper which is then inserted into a frame. The frame can then either be screwed or stuck to a patient's door (or secured along the door) and the contents updated easily without taking down the frame. So tenants do not have to remember which exact room is their, or which is occupied by any of their friends. This is also valuable for visitors.

A picture along the name will also help them if friends' names are forgotten making these frames a perfect option for the dementia sector of the care home industry. It also means that in a setting where either residents and / or staff are temporary, carers and support workers will be able to learn resident's names quickly, or will be able to look up the name as entering their room.

Changed in a snap

A simple name sign is also an economic option price wise as certain products such as an Edge Snap Door Sign are under four Pounds each. This is a small door sign which uses two snap up and down sides at either end to secure information in place under a clear plastic face. Sizes vary from 2in x 6in up to 4in x 12in, with an intermediate size of 4in x 6in known as A6 size. It is a simple yet smart looking answer to discreetly helping a patient with room identification. The larger versions are recommended when a picture is to be incorporated.

The information can be printed in house, with a standard office printer and a small amount of ICT knowledge in applications such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. This is ideal for a nursing home situation as it means that these door signs can be printed quickly, easily and cheaply. When patients are only in on a temporary basis this form of displaying information is convenient as the nursing home can simply remove the paper slide showing the previous patient's information and reprint a new sign with the new patient's information.

Comparing customized door sign options

Certain businesses do offer custom made door signs with a person's name already printed onto this sign, however this is less financially viable in an environment where guests or patients may be changing rooms or leasing regularly. The price of these signs are high, they can retail at over twenty Pounds each and the names in them are not changeable; therefore unlike a product such as an Edge Snap Door Sign, they are not reusable. This could mean throwing away a twenty pound sign every time a patient left. It may take a while to take delivery of these pre-printed signs and with a patient who is only on a temporary stay they may have left before their sign has arrived.

These customisable door signs are also very useful in more permanent situations where personal nameplates are required on a restricted budget. Amongst many existing users of this method of signage is the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the Chelsea Pensioners who are former members of the British Army, who have purchased Edge Snap door signs from Green Magic Company.

Auto Body Repair – Does Bumper Repair Have to Be So Expensive?

There's a very good chance that you have damaged the bumper on your car at some point in your driving career. Your bumpers are the most exposed parts of your car. They're the most likely to be damaged. And … they're designed to be repaired quickly and easily.

There's also a very good chance that something much worse than having your bumpers damaged has happened to you: you almost certainly have overpaid by as much as double to have those bumpers repaired.

Body shops have two solutions to bumper repair: repaint the whole bumper (if the paint is damaged but it is not misshapen) or replace it (if the bumper has been cut, dented, or misshapen). There's one option that they almost never consider: repair and repaint just the area that has been damaged.

When I owned a body shop I was shocked at how many healthy bumpers with minor damage (bumper rash on the corners, a dent with no paint damage, scratches across the face) were removed and discarded by body shops. The body shops were more than happy to toss bumpers that were 90% brand new because they could mark up the cost of the new bumper to the customer. And they were just as happy to paint the entire bumper for small scratches and scrapes covering just 10 – 20% of its surface area because the paint, primer, labor were all marked up as well. In sum, the tactic of body shops is to make jobs as large as possible because bigger jobs yield bigger profits, and it's not the customer that's paying … it's the insurance company (do not fall for that – you pay and then some over time when they increase your rates slowly). The average bumper repaint is about $ 450. A replacement is usually $ 800.

There is a sub-industry that car dealers use but the public is mostly ignorant of: the spot repair business. Spot repair techs specialize in bumper repairs. They can reshape, refill, recolor, and re-clear almost any bumper that does not have damage done to the tabs that attach it to the car (that's 80% of bumper damage, by the way). Contrary to what body shops will tell you, bumpers can be fixed, and just the area that has been damaged can be painted. This does require some skill. The painter must know how to properly scuff beyond the damaged area, blend in the paint, and apply the clearcoat so that the repair is undetectable.

What's the average charge for a corner scuff, the most common of all bumper repairs? About $ 250. And here's a HUGE bonus: most spot repair techs are mobile. That means they come to your home or office. A bumper corner can be sanded, primed, painted, and cured within 90 – 120 minutes. Ask your local car dealers for their "bumper repair guy." There's many in your area doing work you just did not know indicated for prices and convenience that you would be silly to ignore.

How to Buy a Quality Used Sailboat and Avoid the Lemons

Buying a used sailboat can go one of two ways – it can either be a great bargain or it can turn out to be an awful money pit. Of course, everyone wants to find that great bargain they can brag about to all their sailing friends. This article will help you understand the important things you need to consider when purchasing a used sailboat. If you are new to sailing and would not know a well crafted boat from an inflatable dinghy, consider bringing an experienced professional to help you inspect the boat. It will be worth the investment, and you'll probably get an education in the process.

Construction Material

The most important thing to remember with sailboat materials is to avoid wood. It is difficult and costly to maintain, in addition to hiding flaws that could have been impossible to detect without teething it apart. Fiberglass would be the best choice. While some claim that a fiberglass sailboat is "maintenance-free," this is very true. Plan on spending a few days per year on maintenance which could include applying antifouling paint to the bottom (to prevent the growth of barnacles and algae), regular waxing of the topsides with a good marine wax to prevent oxidation of the gelcoat, varnishing any teak trim annually, regular inspections of the mast and rigging (about as regularly as you have your car tuned up), annual inspection of your sails by your sailmaker to repair any small rips or tears, and regular engine maintenance.

If you're not a fan of fiberglass, you can also consider steel. However, be careful to inspect for rust. This is one problem you do not want to have. There are also boats constructed from a material called ferro-cement. Ferro-cement is the least expensive construction for boats over 25 feet. This construction methods uses steel wires covered with a sand and cement plaster. But, unless you build this boat yourself, steer clear of these as they are typically built by amateurs.

Engine

Only consider sailboats with newer engines, as older or vintage engines will be difficult to find replacement parts for. While it may be enticing to own a vintage model, really evaluate how much time and money you are willing to spend on maintenance.

The most reliable engine test is the "Smoke Test." Well-maintained diesel engines will blow small amounts of black smoke with some white – especially if started cold. However, steer clear of diesels that blow blue smoke or a steady stream of white smoke. While diesels are generally very reliable, they do require regular maintenance. Ask for maintenance records for oil changes, etc. Gasoline engines should be leak-free and have a bilge blower that operates correctly. Again, ask for maintenance records.

Sails and Rigging

The only way to make sure the sails are in good repair is to remove them from their bags and spread them out on a flat surface. Look for mildew, previously made repairs, worn spots, folded stitches, and broken slides. Check that the winch operates smoothly. Inspect for worn pins and shackles, worn lines, broken blocks, and fraying wire. Hoist the sails, if possible, to ensure everything works properly.

Miscellaneous

Look for any leaks around hatches or portholes. These can be costly repairs to have to fix later on. Have someone who really knows electrical check the wiring. Again, this can be expensive to fix later, or even dangerous if a fire breaks out while on the water. Check to see if there are any wires banging around inside the mast – as this could surely keep you up at night if you're a light sleeper.

Conclusion

Just remember when you're buying a used sailboat that you're really in the driver's seat. Most sellers are typically in either one of two scenarios: They are either upgrading to a larger boat or they're getting out of sailing altogether. Either way, they will be pretty motivated to sell. Do not pay more than you need to. Start with a low offer and see if they counter. If buying through an auction website, do not get caught up the passion of bidding. There are plenty of boats for sale, so if you do not win the first auction, do not give up.

Use a reliable sailboat transporter, to ensure your new purchase arrives in the same condition you bought it in. And, above all, enjoy your new boat. There's nothing like a day on the water!

A Review of the Revival RG-26M Acoustic Guitar

One of Revival Acoustics more popular guitars is the RG-26M an OM / OO size / shaped acoustic guitar. If you appreciate the quick response and unique sound that mahogany gives and appreciates good tone with added volume and punch; then the Revival RG-26M may be just the ticket for you!

As a dealer for Revival Acoustics, I had heard good things about this particular model, one of my incentivies for stocking this guitar was that I had ordered the RG-26 with the spruce top and liked it!

The RG-26M has an even more reasonable price tag! After making numerous attempts to purchase the RG-26M guitar from my supplier (because they continued to sell out of them so quickly) I finally got my hands on two and began to compare them! I'll admit that I'm a bit biased, in that I do like the sound that mahogany / guitars make; having said that, playing these guitar's for me was a satisfying experience! It is also important to note that size / shape matters here as well and there is a big difference between playing a dreadnought size / body guitar and wrapping arms arms around an OM with thinner sides; none one has long arms; it just feels more comfortable! The OM body is still versatile enough for flat-picking and excel's at finger style approach's like! This guitar features a 1 & 11 / 16th's nut width and works well for people with smaller hands, obviously it does not have the power and depth of a dreadnought, but it can squeeze out a lot of sound which should satisfy most people and it has a uniqueness that is all it's own!

There's Something about the way she Woo's me, this guitar is simple, no nonsense and straight forward, in that it's uniform (basically all the same material / wood goes into building it). Simplicity has a beauty all it's own and though mahogany may not be exquisite like Koa wood it's distinct and rich in color, style and tonality! What you see is what you get here, this may sound redundant, but when you play an all mahogany guitar you get an all mahogany sound, not the sound of a combination of woods like the Sitka spruce topped mahogany back and sides RG-26 ( see the Guitar Player Review on the articles page of my website) Both of the tops on the RG-26M guitars I received had a reasonable amount of what I call character; which I felt made them unique / pleased in there own right; despite being green, (right out of the box) both of these hogs performed well and whenever I am reluctant to put any guitar down, that's a very good sign to me, and not only that, but when I continue to pick them up to play them and continue to be satisfied by them time and time again!

There is nothing fancy here, but I think this model does really show off the abalone rosette well, which to me looks like a jeweled necklace and looks great against the dark mahogany top wood! The finish is all satin / matte and this gives the guitar a real nice natural feel and an overall rustic appearance! I also believe that a satin finish helps this guitar breath out more sound better than a gloss / poly coat would and it just fits so well with this particular model! If there we're something's I would change about this guitar, it would be the width of the neck, I would personally prefer to have a 1 n nut width. I would probably swap out the Grover mini Romatic's and replace them with open gear tuners for a more vintage vibe and because I find the mini knobs small for my hands to maneuver.

The specification's of the RG-26M are the same as the RG-26 guitar, with the only exceptions being the hog top, the satin finish and the headstock inlay; which has Revival inscribed on it in abalone vs. the tree of life Revival logo which is done in pearloid on the RG- 26. The Revival RG-26M is a very affordable solid wood acoustic guitar providing a lot of sound and bite for the money, an if your looking for an all solid mahogany OM sized acoustic guitar you will be hard pressed to do better!

Make Group Bowling Fun: Rules, Tips and Different Ways to Bowl With Others

Bowling is a great game because of its diverse nature. It can be both a highly competitive showdown against others or simply a fun time out with your friends where no one cares about the score. After you’ve gone bowling many times, however, it’s common to want to mix it up a bit and try out fun new ways to bowl. Bowlers around the world have thought up some great different ways to make your time at the alley even more fun. These range from official rules systems in league play to silly ways to bowl with your friends.

If you’re just bowling with your friends during open bowling time, you can really pick any rules you want. You might have everyone compete against each other for the best overall score, or you might pair up with a friend and have your combined score go up against that of another twosome. Also, if you’re just in it to have a good time, you might not even care to look at the scores.

The only time the rules really matter is if you’re joining a league. If you choose this path, there are endless variations, and your bowling center will make it very clear what rules are in place. The most common format is to have the total score of your team against a team of opponents, and each bowler receives a handicap added to their score based on their average score. This is designed to even the playing field and give everyone a fair chance at winning. A better bowler would get fewer “handicap” pins added to their score, and a beginning bowler would get more pins tacked on.

Recreational bowlers have come up with some other great rules for group bowling. A popular one is to agree that the lowest score wins and try to have bowlers hit the fewest pins. To make this work, it’s good to count a gutterball as a strike so that players can’t just throw it in the gutter and win.

You could also have each bowler use their non-dominant hand for bowling. Some bowlers like to experiment with different styles of releasing the ball, such as “granny” style. If you’re going to try anything like this, however, be sure to be safe and not upset the staff at the alley.

When you’re looking to have fun bowling, the sky is the limit!

Types of Hair – Asian Hair

No two persons have the exact hair. The same way different races have different skin color, it's the same way different ethnic groups have different types of tresses. There are three main types depending on ethnic group – Asian, Afro-Caribbean and Caucasian – all types having their own unique attributes. No matter how different the types are, they comprised of the same parts. These are the cuticle, cortex, medulla and a very important protein called keratin which is the chief part of all. What determines the shape of your tresses is the shape of each follicle. Asian hair grows from round follicles giving it a bone straight appearance. It has very thick cuticles made up of approximately ten layers while other types have around five.

Asian hair type is the most dominant in the entire universe. It usually has smaller thickness than the other types but it grows faster than the rest by far relating to swiftness of growth. The quantity of hair on the head in Asians is small but because of the thickness it appears to be full. It has been found that this type reacts more quickly to care products, specifically, hair loss products. It is considered that this has to do with the natural speed of growth that this type has. It is also stronger than other types and more able to recuperate from damages and it also has the longest cycle of growth which lasts up to nine years. Earlierly, this type was the least suspect but butly Asians have been adopting the practices of the western world. These habits can result in very thin hair as it is not very crowded.

Each type calls for different care procedures and products to fulfill the requirements of that special type. Asian hair absorbs moisture very fast and keeps that moisture. In spite of this, it may undergo extra dryness. This is because it promises to be very long and as a result moisture is lost along the long shaft. Hair loss in Asians is little since few hairs are lost daily. Balding is also a rare occurrence in Asians. This type is generally shiny because of the presence of a medulla containing dark pigment which explains the shininess and high moisture. Asians usually have oily scalp which demands their mane to be washed frequently to avoid a dirty look.

Because Asian hair is long, straight, strong and typically free from chemical impairment it is the ideal type to utilize for extensions. As a result, persons turn to Asian countries for human tresses to be used in wig making and extensions.

This type requires the use of products that are appropriate for that specific kind. Shampoos that have a pH of 5 to 5.5 are ideal; anything over that pH would be too harsh. Individuals of Asian lineage must avoid using products like mineral oil.

Asian styles are usually different. They usually look sleek, smooth and silky. They are also generally extremely straight and flowing. Stylists agree that it is harder to curl and color when compared to other types. Digital hot perm machines are helpful in styling because they can be set to provide the appropriate heat and chemical solution for any type. Asian hair is dark and there before adding highlights to it can really highlight the appearance of the tresses. Double-sided coloring is a great way to augment this type. The underside is colored in a dark brown shade and a lighter shade is dyed on top. This gives a shimmering effect when the hair rub against each other.

Save For A Home – Vintage Collectible House Banks

I wanted a house for so many years before I could afford one it’s no surprise that I began to collect small, affordable houses. Vintage banks shaped like houses that is.

One year, at an antiques show in Boston, I found a small house-shaped bank marked “Save For A Home.” Since that’s precisely what I was doing it was a must have. Several months later I found another vintage house bank at a garage sale marked “Save For A Purpose.” Voila! A collection in the making.

Trouble was, it turned out to be a fluke that those two vintage collectibles had turned up so easily. For the life of me I couldn’t find another. Obsession set in. Every time I cruised the aisles in an antique shop I was really looking for just one thing. Soon half a dozen of my friends and family were enlisted in the search. My collection grew at the rate of about one house bank per year — with a lot of hunting in between each discovery.

And then they created eBay. My collection doubled in size within three weeks and the obsession was lifted.

The focus of my obsession is small — about 3.5″ wide and 2.5″ high at the peak of the roof. These banks were give-aways — usually by banks or credit unions, sometimes by insurance companies. They are made of an early plastic with a metal bottom that is opened with a key. If you’re lucky the key will still accompany the bank. There’s a metal plate affixed across the front of the base that reads “Save For A Home,” “Save For A Purpose,” or “Save And Have” and a metal plate on the other side that has the bank or company’s name and address. The body is off-white and the color of the metal plate matches the color of the roof — red, green, or blue. Earlier versions were made of cast iron or tin.

Shaped like a quintessential Cape Cod style house the banks are charming and remarkably detailed. The Cape is complete with dormer windows, shutters with cut-outs, and a fanlight over the door. There are miniature details like a door knocker and a pair of lantern-style lights that flank the door.

The best way to track down house banks is to search on eBay. Do a search that includes the item description field for the term “save for a home” in quotations and you’ll find them.

My grandfather built a Cape in the 1960s financing the construction in large part with the coins he’d been collecting. It’s probably no longer feasible to finance a home purchase with change but I still think these house banks are a great inspiration for somebody who’s trying to amass a down payment or who’s dreaming of their first home. “Save and Have” is certainly a better plan than “Borrow and Spend.”

As for me I just like houses – in any size – so my vintage house bank collection lines a shelf above my desk
