5 Rules of Software Quality Engineering That You Must Not Miss

The digital transformation process has seen an increase in the complexity of software. This is due to the fact that a software application has to work in a multi-dimensional environment comprising of processes, devices, networks, operating systems, frameworks, servers, IDE’s, and others. Besides, each component of the environment can be further divided thereby increasing its complexity. Technology is changing at a rapid pace and each and every software built on it needs to perform at its optimum level. The software interface to technologies such as the cloud, mobility, big data, and analytics, AI or IoT should be robust enough to deliver quality and meet the user expectations.

Given the increase in software complexity, technology changes and the shifting dynamics of user behaviour, the quality of software or application should be top notch. To ensure the quality of software across dimensions, paradigms and disciplines, the quality assurance process needs to undergo a change. It is no longer about software testing alone, but implementing software quality engineering. The idea is not merely about identifying the glitches during the testing phase but eliminating them altogether during the design and development stages.

What is software quality engineering?

As opposed to software testing that involves the testing of specific functions or parts of a software against predefined outcomes, software QA engineering is much more diverse and all encompassing. A software quality engineer works with the development team to design and develop the source codes. He or she conducts other allied tasks such as testing, integrating and deploying the software.

A QA analyst of a quality engineering company as part of his or her responsibility sets up verifiable testing goals. He or she does so in consultation with all the stakeholders. The software quality engineer oversees the entire SDLC and creates a quality culture where each and every stakeholder is aware of the quality objectives. The underlying philosophy of QA engineering is to work on the codes at the designing phase in order to eliminate glitches or vulnerabilities.

Also, the software quality engineer ensures the delivery of software within time constraints. The timely deployment of a software application goes a long way in meeting the expectations of customers. Notably, the all-encompassing software QA engineering includes software testing as well.

Five rules of software quality engineering

The approach of QA engineering has moved towards shift-left testing. The term means rigorously testing the codes during the development phase to identify and eliminate the glitches. The five rules that a QA engineer should follow for the successful implementation of a quality engineering process are:

1. Functional testing: The process involves testing the UI and API to see if they meet the design specifications. This automation testing exercise validates the core functions, inputs, installation, and menus. To illustrate further, a functional testing includes

  • Checking the input fields by entering data consisting of strings, special characters, extended characters and non-Latin scripts
  • Checking the basic API functionality and core application parameters against pre-defined outcomes
  • Setting up the application on local machines running on different operating systems
  • Checking of text functions like copying, pasting and editing
  • Checking the short cuts by using hot keys

2. Peer review of code: The source code should be reviewed by another test engineer to gain a better perspective. However, it is advisable to follow the basic functional testing exercise before going for a peer review.

3. Static code analysis: Use specific tools to look for security and other vulnerabilities. Such tools can check a static code without actually executing it. Perform static code analysis to check if the codes meet the required coding standards or conform to the security regulations.

4. Unit testing: The process involves the checking of a unit comprising of a component, class or method against valid or invalid inputs. In a DevOps environment, a unit test should be conducted every time a change is made to the code. Ensure the unit test to be an extensive one to nip the glitches in the bud. The process can use virtualization with the entry of dummy inputs to check each and every test scenario.

5. User performance testing: The testing should involve a single user and check for any load and performance issues. The test area should include testing the application for quicker loading and execution.

The five key rules of Quality engineering ensure that the codes meet the desired business objectives and user expectations. Any quality engineering company would do well to include the five key rules in its strategy. By doing so, the company helps to remove glitches at the development stage of a software. This leads to the deployment of a better quality software within time and budget constraints.

July is National Ice Cream Month!

National Ice Cream Month is upon us! What is it? Do we really need any special reason to indulge in the world's favorite dessert? Of course not. But in July, it gets its own special month to shine, all the same. There's also a National Ice Cream Day on which to really go all out. It falls on the third Sunday of July.

These two official US holidays were signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. A bit of whimsy? Not at all. Ice cream is big business. Almost 10% of US milk production goes to its manufacture and the industry generates billions of dollars for the US economy. It provides tens of thousands of jobs.

And you do want to stimulate the economy and preserve jobs, do not you?

President Reagan urged people to observe the day with "appropriate ceremonies and activities." So here are some suggestions on how we can celebrate the world's most popular dessert, stimulate the economy and have lots of summer fun, too!

  • Learn how to make it yourself – it's so easy!
  • Treat yourself to an ice cream maker so you can make some time you feel like it. (Here's how to find the best one for you.)
  • Host a tasting party!
  • Treat a friend to a cookbook on frozen desserts.
  • Test your knowledge with a trivia quiz – one question for each day of the month.
  • Make costumes for the party.
  • Get into shape and lose weight with the ice cream diet. (Yes, there is such a thing!)
  • Consider becoming your own boss with a franchise – open your own parlor.
  • Teach your kids some science by making this dessert the old-fashioned way, with salt and ice.

However you celebrate – have a wonderful, delicious time!

Hair and Make-Up Tips For a Bikini Model

Depending on the photo shoot, your hair and make-up can range from bare and flat, to colorful and volumized. You want to deliver the best results as a model, and that includes knowing what is right and what is wrong for each type of photo shoot. As a model you should know the necessary tools and tips for your hair and make-up. For a bikini model, the best approach to your hair and make-up is to keep your look clean, fresh and simple.

You want to look sexy yet natural as a bikini model, so your make-up should be minimized. You should use only a little of foundation, think fresh and light. Remember, you could be getting wet as a bikini model, so do not use so much that your make-up will run. For your blush, you should pick a dark shade of pink, but not so dark that it appears unnatural. When you brush it on your cheeks, you’ll want to work from your cheekbones to your ears in an upward sweep. This will enhance the contour of your face and highlight your cheek bones.

Since your eyes are considered to be “windows to your soul”, your eyes are an essential piece of the puzzle. For your eye shadow, you should pick a light color that compliments your eyes, steering towards browns and grays. Although color is good, it can be problematic during a bikini shoot. Usually the purpose of a bikini shoot is to sell the bikini. You want the consumer to look at how great your body looks in the bikini and how great your overall look is. You do not want them just to concentrate on your eyes; it takes away attention from your body and the swimsuit.

For your mascara, it should be light. You want to accentuate your eyelashes, but be careful not to make them “show stopper” eyelashes. If you were on the beach you wouldn’t see a woman in a bikini with false eyelashes. So a simple mascara will do great, do not use volumizers or eyelash plumpers. For your eyeliner, you should use your eye shadow. Just dip your brush in your eye shadow, usually the darker of the colors you’ve used, and brush it along the bottom eyelid, and on the edge of your eye. This will play up your eyes without making them too harsh, as eyeliner has a tendency to do.

You want your lips to look plump and beautifully shaped for your photo shoot. Choose a lip liner that is very close to your lip color. When applying the lip liner, work your way from the inside of your lips to the edges. Edging your lips is crucial in creating a plump pouty lip. Now for your lipstick you should pick a sheer color, within 2 shades of your lip color. Pick a lipstick that has a little bit of moisture and shine to it. Before you apply the lipstick, you should put some ChapStick on your lips. This will hydrate your lips, helping to keep them looking healthy and moisturized. Apply your lipstick, working from the inside of your lips to the edges. Do not use gloss for a bikini shoot, you want your lips to look moisturized and natural, not glossy and fake. After you have applied your lipstick, take the edge of your pinky, and edge up your cupids bow. This will define your lips and create that voluptuous look.

When it comes to your hair, you want to have that slightly curly and the “next-day” messy look. To get the tousled look, you want your waves to appear silky, you can achieve this by applying a dime size amount of smoothing serum through your dry hair before you style your hair. Use a 2″ curling iron, and loosely curl your hair and lightly tease your hair at the roots. You just want to create the wispy vibe, not full on curls. For the next-day messy look, there are two tips you can use to get the results you need. Take a shower right before you go to bed and comb your hair out to detangle it.

After you have done this, you can part your hair in the center of your head, and pull your hair back into a low bun and go to sleep. When you wake up and take down your hair, you will have relaxed and refined waves. Another way is to spray texturizer onto your dry hair. After you applied the texturizer, scrunch up your ends to help build messy volume. Once you have styled your hair, make sure you spray your hair with a flexible hairspray. You want to maintain the wispy look without sacrificing its naturalness. If you have difficulty thinking of how to do your hair, just glance inside a Victoria’s Secret catalog to get a push in the right direction.

When you have problems trying to create the perfect bikini model look, think of the beach. Close your eyes and envision the beach, imagine you’re walking on the beach, feel the sand beneath your feet. Notice the people as you walk by them. Do they wear bright lipstick colors? Do they have a crazy eye shadow color on? Simply think of how you would go to the beach if you were with friends or by yourself. You want to create the feeling of being on the beach or by the pool.

You want the consumer to imagine that that’s how they can look in the bikini. If you have big curls in your hair and bright red lips, it will be harder for people to imagine themselves as you. The purpose of a bikini model, other than selling the swimsuit, is to make the consumer want to be you. They want to look as sexy as you do on the beach or while laying by the pool. Remember you want to look sexy but RELATABLE! Do this and you will achieve that sexy beach look, and have an amazing shoot.

The Art Of Making A Bonsai From A Shrub

Many people are considering bonsai simply as a tree, but it's not. Bonsai is a peace of Japanese art, the recreation of nature in a miniature style, a secret wish to exalt the nature and also to bring the nature into the living space, just accomplishing the outside growing conditions.
bonsai hibiscus

You can have your own bonsai, but you have to love it and put your own feelings in caring for it, because you have to know that bonsai is a pretentious and very spoiled tree.
Not all the plants can become bonsai, but the trees, shrubs or bush plants. It's not so easy to make a bonsai, especially to care, but you can live with that because it is longeval (can live for few hundred years years) and a real natural inheritance. Here are some steps for you to fallow for a best bonsai tree care.

o For start, take a potted shrub (Hibiscus, Gardenia, Azalea etc.). Depending on what dimension would you like your becoming bonsai to have, choose a junior shrub or mature one.

o Using garden clippers, make the first cutting, following the original shape of the plant.

o Remove the cut shrub in the special bonsai pot. The base of the bonsai tree container has to be perforated, so that the water surpass can flow, assuring the drainage. For the procedure do become easier and the roots do not be destroyed, take out the plant with its soil and put it in a bucket of water. So the soil will fall down in water, cleaning the roots.

o Cut 1/3 of the shrub roots.

o Put on the base of the pot a napkin (it will stop the breakthrough of the unwelcome insects) then add a pebbles coating (for drainage and keeping the soil in and also balancing the pot).

o Fill the pot, for 2,5 cm, with pot mix soil (as regards the soil, pay attention of the bonsai species preferences).

o Stick the shrub, disposing well the roots, and add over another soil coating till 2.5 cm from the end of the pot, allowing the watering.

o Cut again the foliage so that the shrub looks like a bonsai tree.

o Then water a lot the becoming bonsai. After the planting, bonsai does not need much water to be beautiful and to grow well. So water it once a day or in two days, depending the species, just keeping the soil moist and fertilize it regular, in small amounts; it's preferable to use a slow action fertilizer.

o Add above the soil some decorating pebbles.

This is just the beginning, to have a bonsai is very similar to caring for a pet, because the bonsai tree is a spoiled plant, with particular needs.

How To Open Your In Ground Swimming Pool

It's hard to enjoy your pool when all you do is work on it … Just like a boat, but it does not have to be!

You may be asking yourself questions like: "can I open a swimming pool by myself?" Egypt "is opening a swimming pool hard?" Well … Here's a quick list of things that you have to do in order to get your pool up and running. Is this an exhausted list? Nope … So you have the judge on whether or not you should open your own swimming pool or give your local professional a call.

Opening a pool after the winter months can be a daunting task. And by daunting, we mean that (for the average person) it's not the most fun thing to do on the spring to do list.

There's a lot of work that goes into opening a pool and that includes things like:

  • Step 1 in opening a swimming pool:
  • Removing the cover
    • Solid Cover (a little more work)
      • Sounds easy but you must remember to remove the remaining rain and / or snow melt before doing so
      • Drain the water bags (or whatever you're using to hold the cover on … there are a few different ways that it's done)
      • Remove the cover by fan folding it
      • Hose the cover clean
      • Let the cover dry (or put a fan on it to expedite the process)
      • Then roll it tightly and secure it so that it does not open and / or get damaged during the season
    • Mesh Cover (safety cover)
      • Use a brush / broom / leaf blower … to get rid of the leaves on top of the cover
      • Remove the springs from the anchors with the appropriate removal tool
      • If you can not find your removal tool you can use a 3/4 "pipe to lever the springs
      • Get out your 9/16 "allen wrench to secure the anchors in the down position (so they're flush with the deck)
      • Clean and lubricate the anchors
      • Fan fold the cover (like an accordion)
      • Use a broom or something similar (even a leaf blower) to clean the cover as you fold it
        • If you fold it seam to seam and roll it like a sleeping bag it'll work out nicer for you in the end
      • Make sure it's dry before you move it inside for storage
        • If you're going to store it outside, make sure it's off the ground and moth balls are a good touch. It's no fun to find rodents in there when you go to close your pool …
  • Step 2 in opening a swimming pool (yeah, we're only on step 2):
  • Restarting the Filter / Pump System
    • Take the expansion plugs off of the skimmers and wall returns (sometimes they're called freeze plugs)
    • Do not lose these guys, so put them in a sandwich bag or something that you will not lose that will keep them all together. If you put them by the cover it'll be harder to lose. If they're dry or cracked, replace them along with the wall fittings
    • Time to put the filter, heater, pump, and all of that good stuff back together
    • Put the drain plugs into the pump, filter, chlorinator, heater, etc … If it's an above ground pool, reattach the hoses you took off when you closed the pool
    • Replace pump and skimmer baskets, pool ladders, pressure gauges, divings boards, etc … all of the stuff you need to get in and out of the pool and keep it running properly
    • Make sure you use thread sealant like teflon tape on all of the threaded plugs and connections (do not over tighten these guys either … things can crack and remember … you ever have to get these things off when you close the pool , or have us do it for you)
    • If you have a DE powder tight filter, ensure that the clamp band is snug and in the right position! (it may have been removed when you closed the pool to have the filter grids yanked and cleaned with a hose, so be sure to get it re-installed correctly)
    • Place the filter valve to filter position and open air bleeder (usually benefit the pressure gauge)
    • Make sure to open all of the incoming valves before the pump and all of the return side valves after the filter
    • Lube up the valves and o-rings as needed
    • Fill the pump basket with water from the pool or the hose
    • Put the pump lid back on tightly and check for leaks. Double check that the valves and pressure relief ports are open
    • Place the filter valve in the proper position
    • Put the Push-Pull Valves (aka slide valves) in the down position (for most DE filters) and in the up position for Pac-Fab sand filters (or you can engage the pump with the valve in the drain to waste position, and when water starts to pour out of the waste line, turn the pump off. Place the valve into the recirculate position and run the pump until the water flows into the pool. 're done with this part) Getting tired yet? Give us a call and we can do it for you!
    • Power on the pump and start the system. Watch the pressure gauge closely (leave your hand on the power switch to be safe!). Turn it off if pressure increases above normal range (usually around 30psi)
    • Check that all return side valves are open and if there's no pressure build up and the pump is not pumping, shut the power off after about a minute
    • Do this priming process over again and if it still will not prime up, close the main drain valve (if you have one) and start the skimmer by itself. If the pump still will not prime after a few attempts, check the incoming pipes for air leaks. If you still can not get it, call us
    • Repair the things that need repairing (obviously). Add a pound of DE powder per 5 sq ft of filter area into the skimmer (only if you have a DE filter, duh). Do this within 2 minutes of starting the filter! If you have a cartridge filter, get a new cartridge element every 2 years. Replace sand in sand filters every 5 years.
    • Once the system is up and running, adjust the valves and return fittings for proper flow. Look for leaks around the pump and filter as well. Take note of the start up pressure on the filter gauge. When psi is +10 on this number, backwash the filter. Emtpy the pump basket too if you notice a drop in filter pressure. If you're lucky enough to have a heater, follow all of the instructions that it came with! They're usually on the back of the front heater door.
  • Step 3 in opening your pool
  • (You've done the hard stuff, now just some maintenance to make sure it's safe to swim in, PHEW!)
    • Time to inspect everything! (again)
      • When you're opening your pool it's always best to check to make sure that everything's in proper running condition. Things like cleaning, inspecting, replacing parts, lubrication … all can make your swim season a breeze. Nobody wants to plan a pool party only to find that it's completely filthy because your pump has not been working properly. So note the water level, watch for leaks, check and monitor the pressure, look for hazardous electrical conditions like broken conduit, connectors, lack or proper grounding or bonding, and / or exposed wires!
    • Clean the pool
      • Skim, vacuum, brush … this one's pretty self explanatory.
    • Check and balance chemistry
      • Make sure to use a good quality pool water test kit, not one from the dollar store, and replace it every spring (or once a year). Follow the directions on the package and you'll be fine. You do not have to be a chemist to get this one done. However, if you're having issues, give us a call and we'll help you, no worries.
      • Always read the instructions on packaging for proper handling, treatments, and application of the pool chemicals (you do not want to burn your skin or your clothes …)

So these are your tips on how to open your in the ground (or above ground) pool.

If you run into snags along the way, which happens … give your local swimming pool professional a call.

Baseball Hitting Drills – Using a Tee to Improve Your Swing

Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I still believe a baseball-batting tee is the best sitting aid there is. There are other helpful fitting devices that have come out on the market over the years, but none of those can do all that a batting tee can do. Of course, that is if players and coaches know how to use the batting tee correctly. I believe this because a batting tee allows the hitter to see the actual flight and spin of the ball when hit, when many of the otheritting aids do not allow this. Having said that, it is important to try to have enough space to see this flight of the ball, which is the first tip on knowing how to use a tee correctly. Along those lines, other methods of using a tee to improve the swing and to use a tee correctly include:

1. Knowing where to set the tee correctly in relationship to the hitter and home plate, depending on which pitch location the hitter is working on.
2. Hitting low pitches, set in the middle of the plate, through the middle to make sure hands and hips square up at contact.
3. Hitting high pitches on the tee, without popping up to maintain a compact swing.
4. Hitting balls (line drives or long flies) that have back spin.
5. Moving tee to different locations (inside, outside, high, low), with more emphasis on low pitches for hitters who hit a lot of ground balls and high pitches for hitters who hit a lot of pop ups, or strike out often. Emphasize hitting the ball in the direction of where the tee is placed, with backspin line drives always the objective.

There are a number of other ways to use a batting tee, but often these require proper instruction and observation from a knowledgeable coach. The reason for this is that often a hiring drill can solve one hitting problem, but can create a different problem because of the drill incorrectly, or too often.

Following are other uses of a batting tee to improve the swing:

1. Set tee behind hitter and waist high to correct an upper-cutting swing. Have the hitter swing at dropped or pitched balls while missing the tee with this tee placement.
2. Set the tee just off the outside corner and have the hitter work on swinging and missing the tee to avoid casting the bat out.
3. Set the tee an exaggerated distance in front of home and have hitter swing and hit the ball into fair territory to help hitters work on swing extension.

Players and coaches, who can get a hold of two batting tees to practice with can further help learn good fitting fundamentals by doing the following:

1. Set a tee on the inside corner (out front) and outside corner (back towards hitter) and work on hitting the ball that's called out by the coach after the hitter strides.
2. Set a ball on both tees about a foot apart and work on hitting both balls for swing extension and for keeping front shoulder and head in on the ball.
3. Set a ball on both tees with the ball closest to the pitcher for a balls width higher on the tee. Hitters should miss the back ball and still hit line drives on the front ball to develop a compact swing, thereby eliminating any loop in the swing.

Once again, having enough distance to see the ball's flight and direction are necessary to analyze a good swing. Often, coaches set a tee very close to the screen or net so they do not have to go far to pick up balls, but this can inhibit a good analysis of the ball flight and swing correctness. Finally, there are other ways to use a batting tee that can help develop a good baseball swing. There are times when I will actually have hitters exaggerate the wrong swing on the tee in order to over come their incorrect habits, but as stated, it takes a trained hiring coach's eye to be sure different bad habits are not developed.

Benefits of Working With Cash for House Companies to Sell Your House

You may plan to sell your house for buying a new house when your current house becomes too small for your growing family or you may have inherited an additional house property, or your dream job requires you to move to another city or a different state. Well, in any of these situations you need to sell your house, cash for house offers are possible with home buyers.

Cash for house companies are emerging as a viable option for homeowners looking to sell their homes “As Is”. The traditional real estate agents would require homeowners to make necessary repairs and renovations so they can start the sale process. Realtors being intermediaries only help you find a potential buyer for your house, by listing your property on their property website. Review of Barrington Fiberglass Entry Doors by Masonite

Builders, remodelers and homeowners are constantly looking for the best construction materials to use in houses, with durability, attractiveness and longevity in mind. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you would hate for your residential sanctuary to fall apart faster than it took to come together. The front door, the first most noticeable part of a house, is also sadly one of the most overused and overexposed. This has been a sore point for wood, which is prone to rotting, warping, folding and splitting. Door makers are now playing cat and mouse over fiberglass and composite material, which can withstand shifting weather conditions and daily wear and tear. Barrington fiberglass entry doors, the premium product collection by a long-time door manufacturer, Masonite, are among top rated examples of smarter alternatives to wooden exterior doors.

Upon review, what is emerging as the most attractive quality of Barrington doors is that they emulate authentic wood doors. Wood had been favored as the surface material for doors, with good reason. It exhibits the kind of timeless craftsmanship that you have come to love about traditional doors. Barrington fiberglass entry doors have been given a wood grain surface made to resemble the real hardwood doors of old. In a choice of oak or mahogany texture, this variable-depth wood grain finish shows how present-day technology can closet itself in a neat classic package. A second stand-out quality of Barrington doors is their customized make. Fiberglass doors typically use generic glass inserts but the Barrington line uses proprietary decorative glass in an array of designs, which has been factory-glazed using custom glazing ingredients so that it is wider, with narrower stiles and rails. Custom glass frames have been designed to align correctly with the panel.

In this vein, composite material that resists rotting has been used for the bottom rail while hinge and lock stiles have been engineered with laminated lumber. A raised moulding has been integrated into the door facing to come as a singular piece, not like plant-on appliques break apart from the door. All Barrington doors have a square-edge design and a reinforced lock area to make a solid mounting surface.

While less meticulous door makers have been on fire for functional but none too fetching products, the Barrington brand has not neglected beauty. This is evident not only in the likeness to traditional hardwood doors but also in designs intended to cater creatively to the high-end market. The Sierra series of Barrington fiberglass doors coordinates with Southwest, Spanish or Mediterranean motifs. It features the first ever non-glazed, opaque finish on a Barrington door. It has a 2-panel camber top design and custom panel profile, with options of planks and matching full sideline panels. The Craftsman series is fashioned after mission or craftsman architecture. Three recessed panels and a one-lite glazing system are its other elements, with the option of a matching one-panel, one-lite sidelite panel.

Shoppers are quick to forget considering the company behind the brand, which especially matters when buying a product that is expected to work well or last long. In this case, Barrington fiberglass entry doors as well as interior doors and patio doors are backed by the trusted name of Masonite, based out of Tampa, Florida. For a bit of history, founder William Mason was a researcher, engineer and inventor who had innovated the use of wood for the creation of building materials in 1924. Masonite has since been manufacturing doors and building products for over 80 years, and has one of the largest research and development centers for steel, composite, fiberglass and wood doors.

Bathtub Faucet Repair Tips and Techniques

Did you know that you can fix a leaking shower faucet and save hundreds of gallons of water a year? Most people just think of a dripping faucet as an annoyance and do not realize how much precious water is being wasted one drop at a time. The good news is that almost anyone with a few basic hand tools can learn how to fix most dripping faucets.

Let's start with the basics. Faucets have one primary purpose, to allow the water in your pipes to be used in a controlled manner. This means that they have to open to allow water out of the pipes and close to keep water in the pipes. Not rocket science, right? The closing part is what we want to concentrate on here.

There Are Two Basic Faucet Designs

Faucets drip when they fail to completely trap the water in the pipes. Most faucets use one of two basic methods to stop the water flow. Some, primarily older designs, use rubber or neoprene washers which tighten against a "seat" and block the flow of water. Drips from these faucets are addressed by replacing the washers and / or seats. We'll talk about how to do that in a minute. Most other faucet designs involve some sort of cartridge. Some people call these "washerless" faucets. Repairing newer style water faucets like these usually involves replacing the cartridge (s).

Washers And Seats

Older faucet designs often use washers to block the water and keep it in the pipes. Tightening the handle compresses the washer against a "seat" and seals the opening, thus stopping the water flow. If you need to do a bathtub faucet repair on a three handle wall faucet you probably have this type. You will also run into this style if you need to fix a leaking shower faucet hat has two handles. Many sink and lavatory faucets also use washers. One way to tell whether or not your faucets use washers is to see if the handle gets harder to turn as you turn it off. If turning it really tight stops the drip, this probably, but not always, means that you have washers. If you have a dripping faucet that has washers, the basic repair process is very similar whether you need to know how to repair a shower faucet, repair a leaking tub faucet or fix a dripping sink faucet. There is, however, one important difference.

Bathtub Faucet Repair

The one critical thing to remember when fixing a leaky bathtub faucet is that you will have to turn the water off to the entire house before removing any parts other than the outer trim pieces. If you're not sure which pieces are trim, just turn the water off first just in case. Once you have turned off the main water to the house you can begin taking things apart. There are lots of different brands and designs of faucets out there and they all come apart a little differently, so you will have to sort of feel your way through.

Removing The Trim

The first step is to remove the handles. This is usually done by removing a cap to expose the handle screw and then removing the screw. Next, remove the handle. This may require a little finesse, as the handles sometimes get stuck in place. One trick is to place the handles of a pair of channel lock pliers behind the valve handle, one on each side, and tap evenly on the handle to nudge it loose. If this does not work you can buy a special tool to remove handles but these tools are sometimes hard to find and usually a little patience is all you need to do the trick.

After he handles are off, there is usually some sort of sleeve over the stem itself. This typically has to come off too. Once again, there are many different configurations. One popular design uses threaded plastic tubes to connect the trim sleeve with the valve. Other types have the sleeve threaded directly onto the valve. You will have to figure this step out before you can proceed. If you can determine what brand valve you have there is a good chance of finding instructions on-line.

Now For The Root Of The Problem

OK, so you have removed both the handles and any remaining trim sleeve from the valve. Now you are ready to get to the root of the problem, your valve stem. The washer is almost always at the other end of the valve stem from the handle. Usually the stem is threaded into the valve body and you will just need to unscrew it to remove it. Here's a tip. Stick the handle back on for a second and open the valve half way. This relieves pressure on the stem and makes it easier to unscrew. Now you just need to make sure you are loosing the correct nut.

Lots of valves have a packing nut around the stem. It is usually a little smaller and just in front of the actual connection with the valve body. The packing nut's purpose is to squeeze some special packing material around the stem to prevent water from leaking around the stem when the valve is in use. Loosening the packing nut will not help you, you need to get your wrench on the actual connection to the valve body. By the way, a deep socket is often the only tool that will work to remove the valve stem.

Removal The Valve Stem

The easiest way to make sure you have the correct nut is to see if there is a gap opening up between the nut and the valve body as you loosen the nut. The valve stem itself will also usually turn when you have the right one. If you have loosened the packing nut by mistake, do not worry, you will adjust it before you are finished anyway. Go ahead and remove both stems and keep up with which one is which, it matters on many valves.

After you have the stems out you should be able to find the washer on the "inside" end. If it is nicknamed, torn or brittle it is likely the cause of your drip. Even if it looks brand new, go ahead and replace it. You've already come this far. You can get replacement washers at almost any hardware store. Sometimes you may want to replace the whole stem, especially if the handle end is stripped out. It's best to just take the stem with you to the store and see if you can match it up. Most Do It Yourself stores have replacement stems for many popular brands. If your valve has a center diverter valve to switch the waterfrom the tub spout to the shower head the same process applications. Many times it is easier to replace the diverter stem than to repair it. This really depends on the design of the stem.

How Are Your Seats?

One more thing to check is the seats. These are the part of the valve body that the washer tightens up against stop the water flow. If you can get your finger inside the valve, feel of the seats and see if they feel rough. If so, it would be best to replace them if you can get them out. The inside of the seats, which is where the water flows through when the valve is open, usually have either a hex or square recess. Special seat wrenches are used to remove the seats. You can usually get these wrenches at the same place you get the other parts and they're not expensive. You just stick the wrench through the seat and unscrew it. The replacement seats screw back in the same way, just put a little pipe dope on the threads before you install it.

Put It All Back Together

Once you've figured out what needs to be replaced and have done that, you just need to put everything back together. If your valve has packing nuts do not put the trim back on until you have turned the water back on. Once the water is on, go ahead and stick the handle on for a second and open the valve. Make sure no water is leaking around the stem. If it is leaking, with the handle opened half way, snug down the packing nut until the leak stops. Easy does it. If you get it too tight the handle will be hard to turn. Now finish installing the trim pieces and you are done.

Repairing Newer Style Water Faucets

If you have a newer, "washerless" type valve the repair process is similar, but usually easier. Many of these type valves use a self contained cartridge. If the valve starts to drip, just replace the cartridge and you're done. You still need to turn the water off and remove the handles and trim. The cartridge is usually held in place by a retaining nut on the valve body or, in the case of most Moen valves, by a retaining clip. Simply remove the cartridge and put another one in it's place. If your hot and cold are back when you finish, turn the water back off, pull the cartridge back out, turn it over 180 degrees and re-install it.

Delta Style Valves

One other common design that is considered "washerless" was made famous by Delta and copied by several other makers. It uses little "cup" seals that fit over springs recessed in the back of the valve body. The springs press these "seals" against the cartridge and regulate the flow through little tapered openings in the cartridge. If you have one of these and it's dripping, changing these springs and seals will usually correct it. Here's a tip. Once you have the cartridge out of the way, insert a phillips screwdriver into the seal and pop both the seal and spring out. Stick the new ones on the end of the screwdriver to help guide them into place. This is especially helpful if you do not have long slender fingers.

Delta, and a few imitators, also have a faucet design that uses a ball instead of a cartridge. This is not as common in tub or shower valves but there are plenty of them out there. The springs and seals are the same but there are lots more o-rings an parts to deal with. The good news is that these parts are readily available. While it's a little more complicated than learning how to repair a Moen kitchen faucet, which is a piece of cake, it is still easier than working with most washer type faucets.

These Techniques Work In The Kitchen Too

Armed with the knowledge you've gained in this article you now not only know how to repair a shower faucet and to repair a leaking tub faucet, but you can apply these skills to many other faucets as well. After fixing a leaky bathtub faucet, stopping a dripping outside hose faucet will be a breeze. The techniques that you will use to complete a "washerless" bathtub faucet repair can be used when repairing new style water faucets of all kinds. Whether you have an old dripping tub faucet or a newer kitchen faucet that just will not quite shut off you can now fix it. So put these new skills to use, roll up your sleeves and stop that drip!
