Vitamin A– Vitamin A plays a role in several functions throughout the body such as vision, bone metabolism, skin health, immune function, antioxidant activity and reproduction. Vitamin K– Vitamin K plays a key role in blood coagulation, bone metabolism, and the circulatory system. Vitamin K is found mainly in green leafy vegetables but can also be found in avocados and kiwifruit. There are usually no symptoms of deficiencies in adults; however, adults that suffer from liver damage, cystic fibrosis, who have recently had abdominal surgery, bulimics and certain drugs may inhibit the absorption of Vitamin K. B Vitamins can be found in a variety of foods such as animal products, legumes, yeast, fish, seeds and whole grains. Deficiencies in B Vitamins can cause various symptoms such as weight loss, weakness of the limbs, depression, sensitivity to sunlight, diarrhea, insomnia, acne, water retention, and high blood pressure.

Calcium– Is the most abundant mineral in the human body, 99% of it is contained in the bones and teeth. Calcium plays a role in many biological functions such as muscle contraction and as a neurotransmitter between cells, but Calcium’s claim to fame is its role in bone development and sustaining bone density. Calcium can be found in many foods such as dairy products, nuts, sesame seeds, lentils, and eggs. Symptoms of Calcium deficiencies are Osteoporosis and Osteomalacia, thinning of the bones.

Potassium– Potassium is a mineral that can reduce hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Potassium also plays a role in neurotransmission, muscle contraction and heart function. Most fruits, vegetables and meats contain Potassium in low quantities, but orange juice, bananas, kiwi, potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, soybeans, brown rice, and garlic are rich in Potassium. Deficiencies of Potassium are rare but in severe cases of vomiting and diarrhea can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness and cramps.

Zinc– Zinc is an essential metallic trace element which assists in many functions within the body. It is instrumental in immune response, brain function and plays a role in prostate gland health and reproductive organ growth. Zinc plays a major role in cellular metabolism as over 100 enzymes rely on zinc to be a catalyst in many chemical reactions. Zinc also helps DNA tell cells what to do such as hormone secretion and nerve impulses; which is important for growth and disease prevention. Zinc is found in red meat in high concentrations but it is also found in whole grains, beans, almonds, and various seeds. Deficiencies in Zinc can cause repressed growth, diarrhea, impotence and weakened immune system.

Magnesium– Magnesium is another metallic trace element that is essential for all cells in a living organism. Over 300 enzymes require Magnesium to be the catalyst in various chemical reactions including synthesis of ATP into energy. Magnesium also facilitates calcium absorption into the body. Magnesium is found in spices, nuts cereals, coffee, cocoa, tea and green leafy vegetables. Modern countries have inadvertently reduced the amount of Magnesium intake due to the food refining process and modern fertilizers; which do not contain Magnesium. Chromium– Chromium is another metallic trace element that is required for the body’s production of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the body’s blood sugar levels. Chromium helps transport blood sugar from the bloodstream into the cells and is critical in the process of turning fats, carbs and proteins into energy. Good sources of Chromium are brewer’s yeast, meats, whole grains, nuts and cooking with stainless steel cookware. Symptoms of deficiencies in Chromium are rare; however, in severe cases it can cause weight loss, confusion and insulin resistance.

Manganese– Manganese is another metallic trace element that ensures healthy bones, bone metabolism and helps the body absorb Calcium. It is also involved in, insulin regulation, formation of connective tissues, thyroid regulation, collagen formation, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and is a powerful antioxidant. Manganese can be found in many foods such as meats, nuts, garlic, green vegetables, brown rice, and raspberries. Deficiencies in Manganese are rare but can occur. Symptoms include bone malformation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and muscular contraction.

Iron– Iron is another metallic trace element that is essential for life. Iron is essential to the proteins that are involved in oxygen transport and for regulating cell growth and metabolism. Iron can be found in meats, cereal’s fortified with iron and cooking with iron cookware. Deficiencies in Iron cause a lack of oxygen to be delivered to the cells and therefore results in fatigue, restless sleep, lack of concentration and decreased immunity. Conversely, too much Iron in the body is very toxic and therefore many vitamins state on the bottle either “with Iron” or “without Iron”. Iron’s RDA for men are 10 mg and for women is 15mg a day, but for athletes, it could be as much as 25 mg a day.

Selenium– Selenium is another metallic trace element that is essential in the activation of glutathione peroxidases, a powerful antioxidant. Selenium is also required for the proper functioning of the thyroid. Selenium can be found in many foods such as nuts, fish, meats, eggs crab and lobster. There are no symptoms of deficiencies of Selenium however when supplemented it seems to have a positive effect on male infertility, cancer cells, and tuberculosis.

How is your diet and what are your physical needs? The majority of Americans do not eat a balanced diet to provide them with all the nutrients to fight off disease, keep bones healthy, protect the skin, cardiovascular health, give us energy and in general to keep us healthy. The proper amount of each nutrient is dependent on your physical needs. Choosing the right multi vitamin can be difficult but here are some things to consider when purchasing a multi vitamin.

Athletes– You will need a multi vitamin with higher overall content as many of them are depleted or excreted out of the body via sweating or urination. If your body’s Calcium reserves are depleted your body will “steal” it from your bones and can lead to future skeletal diseases. Many vitamins will contain amino acids for muscle building and recovery and high levels of antioxidants to eliminate the free radicals produced by a strenuous workout.

Adults over 50– May want to take a multivitamin that is higher in Calcium and vitamin D for bone health and to prevent osteoporosis. B vitamins are important for energy and proper absorption of nutrients from food and as we age, our bodies are less able to absorb them. CoQ10 for heart health and energy and as we get older our production levels decreases. Vitamin K for bone health and its antioxidant properties have been shown to prohibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Lycopene to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and has been shown to have positive effects on prostate health.

Prenatal– Will have a higher concentration of B9 (Folic Acid) for proper brain, spine and skull formation in fetuses, calcium for proper bone formation and iron for the proper development of red blood cells. It will also have a reduced level of Vitamin A as it can cause health defects in fetuses.

Women– Need to have a multi vitamin higher in calcium for strong bones, as women usually do not get enough from their diet alone. Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) for overall health, preventing genetic diseases, and may also prevent cancer and heart disease. Women also need more Iron as women do not eat much meat and they lose a lot of iron every month through menstruation.

Men– Need Boron for prostate health, calcium for healthy bones, chromium to regulate blood sugar levels, Folic Acid for regulating blood flow and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, glucosamine for joint health, and the omegas to reduce blood pressure and for heart health.

Stress Relief– Will be loaded with B vitamins as they produce anti stress hormones and vitamin C to prevent stress related illness.

Conclusion Most multi vitamins should be taken in the morning with a meal as some of the nutrients may cause an upset stomach. Multi vitamins are fairly inexpensive unless they contain high levels of expensive nutrients such as Biotin ($4,000 per active pound!) or contain other nutrients that are condition specific such as bodybuilding. Multi vitamins are worth the price and it the single most important supplement you can take to stay healthy. Think of multi vitamins as insurance for your body. You may not feel much of a difference right away but over time, when you are healthy, you will be glad that you took them.

You'll also need a few hand tools such as screwdrivers, saw, and etc. Once you have secured a few used pallets, your first job is to break them up into individual pieces of wood. and then simply store the various pieces in an appropriate place.

I never set myself any deadlines. Instead, I wait until I see an item of furniture which I really like, and one which I know could have made from the wood I've salvaged from the pallets. For example, I recently saw a really nice bedside pedestal. I immediately went home and started working out my measurements in order to know whether I had enough timber to make two; one for either side of our bed. The following weekend I went to work, and even if I have to say so myself, our pedestals look terrific.

Our dining room table is also made from second hand timber pallets, as is our coffee table, and also out TV cabinet. They might be made from pine, but you would never say so if you saw them, and I can assure you, they're not going to fall to bits any time soon. In fact, everyone who has seen the furniture I've made from used pallets has commented on how good it looks.

So, how do you go about getting your hands on old pallets? Many companies just want to get rid of them, and if that's the case, they'll let you have them free of charge. Others will sometimes charge you a small fee, but again, it's a lot less than you'd pay at your local hardware. One thing to keep in mind however, is the fact that there are a growing number of timber merchants who are willing to purchase used pallets.

Of course if you have access to second hand pallets on an ongoing basis, then you could also earn a little revenue on the line, but from personal experience, you can make a lot more if you use them for making household furniture. In a nutshell, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the wood used for making pallets, so why not take advantage of an ideal opportunity?

Not only can you save a reasonable amount of money, but you can also have the pleasure of knowing that much of the furniture in your home has been made / crafted by you.

Building a New House – Initial Steps in Developing Plans in Florida and Other Areas

Building in Miami or any area of South Florida is completely different from building in any other area of the country. While most of the eastern seaboard of the United States, and much of the rest of the country, builds houses with wood framing and a finish of brick or wood siding, South Florida builds with concrete block and concrete.

Quality vs. price

Because of hurricane winds the structures in this area must be very strong. Where the rest of the country looks down on us because they only use concrete block in their basements, for my money, I really like concrete and block construction. Concrete blocks do not get termites and will not rot. Therefore, a concrete block structure will last for 100 years or more with almost no maintenance. Unfortunately, the vast majority of houses in Miami have wood trusses with plywood sheathing for the roof, then roofing paper and either shingles or concrete tiles on top. This type of construction is not particularly good at resisting hurricane wind conditions. Although the Florida Building Code has tried its best at improving the requirements for installing the roof sheathing and the roof finish, it cannot begin to compare to the strength that the roof would have if a concrete slab were used for the roof structure.

So why, if we know this, don’t we build with concrete slab roofs? Cost – the only reason is cost. It is much more expensive both to design and to install a concrete slab roof, especially on a slope to take a concrete tile finish.

So one of the first things the homeowner needs to establish at the beginning of the design process for a new house is how much the owner wants to spend on the construction. There is the cheap way to build a home and the expensive way. This is an issue that will come up many times during the design and construction process.

The program

But in order to determine a budget, the homeowner first needs to establish the square footage of the new house. To establish the total square footage, he will have to generate a program for the house. The program is a list of rooms with their corresponding sizes.

So now we have a basic idea of the major spaces of the house and approximately how many square feet total homeowner will need for the house.

Also, this is a good time to decide whether there will be any outdoor spaces, such as covered terraces or pergolas. In Florida these are particularly good additions to the interior spaces. With wonderful temperatures during the winter there is no reason to spend all the time in air-conditioned interior spaces.

The budget

So what will a house that is just under 2000 square feet cost in South Florida? There is no magic formula to determine this. The cost of the house depends on many things that have to do with the design, such as: the type of roof, the ceiling height(s), the complexity of the design, the finishes, whether it is going to be on a septic tank or sewer, and the type of foundations. Then, there are those costs that have nothing to do with the design, like the location of the house, how busy are the contractors in the area, how well-known and reliable the contractor is, etc. Although the price of a house can vary wildly because of all the items discussed above, at this time a range of $150 to $250 per square foot could be used for a house that is not too elaborate with standard construction. So if we go back to the example. A 2,000 square foot house would cost between $300,000 and $500,000 excluding the land.

The design team

The Miami-Dade County Building Department does not require plans for a single-family residence to be signed and sealed by an architect or engineer. This is not true for all municipalities in the area. For example, Coral Gables does require all plans to be signed and sealed by an architect. But for all practical purposes the volume of information that has to be included in a set of plans in any municipality within Miami-Dade County, most of the time, there is a need to hire several professionals: an architect, an MEP engineer, and a structural engineer. MEP stands for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. The mechanical engineer designs the air-conditioning, the electrical engineer designs the electrical, including the lighting, and the plumbing engineer designs the plumbing. The structural engineer designs the structure and provides the required structural calculations for the building envelope. The architect designs the entire house and coordinates everybody’s work. The coordination of all the disciplines is probably the architect’s most important role as without coordination there could be real conflicts in the construction phase. Although it is legal to produce plans on his own in some parts of the county, it will be an insurmountable task to produce construction drawings for permitting (unless the homeowner has a background in construction with actual experience and the knowledge of the Florida Building Code and the local zoning codes).

What do these design services cost the homeowner? They also vary greatly but there is also a range among good, established professionals. This range would be from 6% to 10% of construction cost for the permit plans for all the disciplines. The services during the construction phase are usually charged separately on an hourly basis or in a separate package.

Style of the house

Another important decision to be made early on is the style of the house. There are basically three styles popular for home design in South Florida – modern, Mediterranean, and Key West.

Once the homeowner decides what styles he wants, it is important to convey the style and the details to the architect. The best way to explain to an architect what he wants is through either images from magazines or actual photographs of other houses.

Choosing an architect

Now that you have the basic items together, the next step is to pick your architect. This is very important as this is the person with whom you will work very closely during the next year.

Take the survey from the existing land from the time you closed on your mortgage. If you have lost it or it’s too old or inaccurate, the architect will arrange for you to get it updated or have a new one done.

Ask to see photos of his/her work. Ask for references. Ask questions. Ask him/her how he would approach the project. Start to sense if this is someone you could work with. Do you like the predominant style of the architect’s work? Does his/her work appeal to you? Ask about the process. Ask what you should expect in the way of his/her services. Ask him to show you the plans for a similar project.

People are individuals and everyone is unique. I remember how many people have hired me because they liked my “Mediterranean” or “Spanish” style or my modern or post-modern style. One person told me that she hired me because I returned her phone calls promptly. Chemistry between people is meaningful. Do not discount your initial impressions.

The construction documents

Normally, construction documents entail several parts: the drawings, the specifications, the instructions to bidders, and the addenda. Normally, when the architect handles the construction bid phase for the owner, he selects the type of contract the owner will have with the contractor. This document is also part of the construction documents.

The drawings are the major part of the work, which along the specifications act as a step-by-step guide for the contractor to use during the construction. Sometimes on large jobs, the specifications are placed in a separate book and called the Project Manual. On most residential projects, the specifications are normally covered as notes right in the drawings. For elaborate interiors a separate package is done by the architect and charged separately.

The construction documents are generated in phases from the general to the detailed. I like to divide my projects into 4 phases: Preliminary design, design development, 50% construction documents, and 100% construction documents. Each phase builds on the previous phase until the architect feels that the drawings are all coordinated among the different disciplines and are ready to submit for permitting.

With careful planning and communication with your architect, his good drawings and coordination and the careful selection of a reputable contractor, your new house project should flow without major problems. Although there are often change orders due to unforeseen conditions or changes the owner wants to implement, most issues should be resolved prior to construction.

How Safe Is Your Oven Door? Exploding Oven Door Glass Is More Common Than You Think!

Is your oven door about to explode?

I received a call to do a cleaning on a KitchenAid double wall oven where the inside glass panel on the oven door exploded for no apparent reason. Upon arrival, a majority of the glass was cleaned up but there was still a lot of small pieces of glass imbedded into every crevice as well as the interior of the oven was coated with a fine layer of glass dust and particulates. The owners stated they had some remodeling work done recently and the contractor turned the ovens self clean mode on when the glass exploded. My first reaction was the contractor did something to cause this but the owner stood firm as this was not the case.

While I hadn’t personally seen the glass on an oven door shattered before, I have heard of it happening. In my research to see what would cause this it came to light that this is a more common issue than I realized. But how does this happen – how can the glass explode for no apparent reason? Isn’t the glass tempered and supposed to be stronger than normal glass?

Is it common for oven door glass to explode for no reason?

I did some research online and could not find an exact number of complaints filed each year. There didn’t seem to be one manufacturer with more complaints over another or if it was more common for the interior glass to explode over the exterior glass or vice-verse. While there appears to be no centrally documented place where the majority of complaints are made, I did notice there are hundreds of complaints littering the web from people with all the same testimonial of hearing an explosion in their kitchen and finding a million pieces of glass all over their kitchen floor. A few complaints that the glass exploded during the self clean mode while quite a few complained the glass exploded when they hadn’t even used the oven in a few days.

In a consumer news brief by KOMO Channel 4 News in Seattle they state “Repair experts point out that the number of glass shattering cases is relatively small compared to the millions of ovens on the market. But, given the pages of federal incident reports, consumer who’ve dealt with the problem wonder why there have been no safety alerts.”

What is tempered glass?

The glass on your oven door is tempered. Tempered glass by definition according to the National Glass Association (NGA) “A strong break-resistant type of safety glass that, if broken, shatters into small granular pieces. Glass heat-treated to withstand greater than normal forces on its surface” Uhh..sure, that explains a lot!? How about – Tempered glass is manufactured using high heat and a rapid cool down making it four to five times stronger than normal glass. When tempered glass breaks it is designed to “explode” into small oval-shaped pebbles or pieces instead of shards. Tempered glass can withstand high heat and heavy loads but can also be very brittle especially around the edges and when subjected to blunt force from something with a point.

What causes tempered glass to break?

During the process of tempering the glass is heated upwards of 720 degrees and rapidly cooled using cool air to change its molecular structure. It is not uncommon for the glass to develop small unseen stress fractures during this process. These stress fractures may break during the tempering process or may never break, there’s just no guarantee what will happen or when.

What are the manufacturer’s doing about this?

The typical universal statement will be “We take consumer safety serious”; sure you are but what are you doing about it? Other than “looking into the matter” and in a few cases replacing the glass for free, they are basically doing nothing about it. Why? Because there isn’t anything they can do about it; they have no control over the glass making process nor can they guarantee the glass won’t ever break.

Check your owner’s manual Care and Use guide. The manufacturers have included a statement essentially stating the glass would be replaced if damaged within the first year of installation but after that it would be considered customer failure and abuse and all costs to replace the glass would fall upon the owner.

How can you prevent glass breakage?

You can’t fix what you can’t see right? While there are may not be anything you can do due to the unforeseen stress fractures in the glass, you can help prevent creating new fractures or help prevent the existing fractures from expanding by:

  • Don’t slam or let the oven door slam closed
  • Make sure the racks are fully pushed in before closing the door
  • Don’t drop hard or sharp objects on the door when its open (I know, stupid comment)
  • If the edges of the glass are exposed on the outside of the door make sure you protect them from pots and pans or hard objects.
  • Don’t drip cold liquids onto the glass when it’s hot.
  • Don’t use your self-clean feature (Yes, I said it!)

*The self clean mode heats the oven upwards of 900 to 1200 degrees (glass is tempered at roughly 720 degrees) The high heat of the self clean mode may affect the structure of the glass over time if you use your self clean mode frequently.

Nobody intends to accidentally drop anything on their oven door or hit it with a sharp object but know that if you do, you might not cause or see any damage today but one day your glass may explode for no apparent reason and you can look back and wonder.

What to do if your oven door glass explodes

  1. Take pictures of the damage and surrounding area
  2. Call the manufacturer and file a complaint
  3. File a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission
  4. If your oven warranty has expired, be prepared to pay for the replacement yourself.
  5. Thoroughly vacuum and deep clean your oven by hand. Do not use the self clean mode with the glass missing! There may be chunks of glass in between the door and cabinet frame, glass dust and small particulates inside the convection fan cover or coating the upper heating element. You want to make sure no glass residue gets into your food.


If you are in the market to purchase a new oven I highly recommend reading online reviews or getting a copy of Consumer Reports and researching what other buyers are saying. Sure, there may be an oven you have your mind set on because it looks nice or has some bells and whistles but if there are a lot of complaints than maybe you should be looking at a different model.

How To Paint Your Snowboard

If you are a typical snowboarder, you want to be a bit unique and stand out on the slopes. One way to do this is with your choice of snowboard apparel. However, another very popular ways to do this is to custom paint your snowboard.

You can do this yourself, if you have the time and patience. Basically, to do a good job, you have to follow four steps – preparing the board, priming the board, painting it, and sealing it.

However, to start with, you will need a good work area. There are advantages to painting both indoors or outdoors. If you have an indoor work area, make sure that the ventilation system is good enough to exhaust the paint fumes from the area. If your work area is located outdoors, your main concern will be finding a non-windy area where the air currents are small or non-existent so they won’t interfere with your paint job.

To ensure that the board is clean, wipe the dirt off the surface to be painted with a clean damp rag. You also want to remove any wax build up. Any good wax remover from your local hardware or grocery store should do the job. Then, you want to scuff the surface of the board with fine sandpaper. This will prepare it to receive the primer coat. And, finally, plug up the binding holes with q-tips to prevent paint or primer from clogging them.

Once the prep work is done, priming is relatively easy. simply spray it on according to the directions on the spray can. Basically, however, you want to avoid over priming the board. So, rather than trying to do everything with one pass, if necessary, do multiple light passes until you have covered the board well. The important thing is to keep the spray can moving so you don’t have primer build-up in spots. Then let the primer dry.

When painting the snowboard, first lay down the background colors – again using multiple light layers, if necessary instead of one heavy layer. When you are satisfied with the density and colors of the background, then you can use stencils to apply any designs or logos on the board.

The next to last step is to seal the board by clear coating it. This is usually a multi-phase process as you will want to apply three to four coats on the board.

Finally, to give your board that nice glossy finish, get some rubbing compound from your local auto supply shop and give the surface a nice buffing.

Welding Titanium – Weld Colors Tell a Story If You Are Listening

Titanium Weld Colors can teach you something. Even if you don’t weld titanium, there is a cool trick where titanium weld colors help to test the quality of your torch gas. Stay with me here and learn the trick.

Discoloration of Titanium from the heat of welding is caused by oxidation and different colors are caused by varying thickness of oxide layers.

The cool thing about titanium weld colors is that they are predictable. In other words, we are able to determine what temperature the titanium metal reached when it was exposed to oxygen in the atmosphere.

The colors blue, violet, green, gray and white all happen at gradually higher temperatures.

There are some intermediate colors too and here is the progression..

The first titanium weld color is straw, followed by brown, then brownish blue, purple blue, green and blue, dull salmon pink, gray and white oxide.

Some Codes actually allow blue discoloration, but best practice is to prevent  titanium welds from discoloring beyond the straw color.

Often times titanium welds are critical enough to hold the standards higher than the minimum allowed by a code.

But like I said at the start, even if you dont need to weld titanium, you can use this information to test the shielding gas coming out of your tig torch.

Titanium begins to discolor at around 500 degrees F.  The hotter it gets without being protected by inert gas like argon, the more it oxidizes and changes colors beginning at straw and ending at white chalky oxide.

But when protected by argon until it cools below 500 deg F, titanium will be bright and silver even when heated past its melting point which is approximately 3135 F depending on the alloy grade.

What this means to you is that you can test the  shielding gas coming out of your tig torch just by making a puddle and  letting it cool and then evaluating the discolored titanium metal.

Here is how to do it…

Set your tig welding machine to about 50 amps for welding titanium. Set your post flow shielding timer to 15 seconds. Hold the tig torch at a dead nuts 90 degree angle to the titanium test piece and light up. Create a puddle about 1/4″ to 3/8″ , keep the arc as short as the diameter of the tungsten used, and dwell for around 7 seconds.  Let off your foot pedal amperage control and hold the torch still until the weld and heated area cools completely…around 15 seconds.

If your argon is not contaminated, your electrode as well as the titanium puddle will be completely silver.

There will be a circular area around the puddle weld where the argon envelope shielding protected the titanium, that is discolored. That’s OK as long as it is symmetrical and at least as large as the inside diameter of the tig cup.

An odd shaped halo of titanium weld colors too close to the weld might indicate a clogged diffuser in the gas lens collet body or other problem…and if the weld puddle and electrode are not bright silver, you may have bad argon or a leak.

Things like that are very important to know before making a critical weld.

Makita LS1013 Review – Read This Before You Buy the Makita LS1013 Compound Miter Saw

The Makita LS1013 is a dual sliding compound miter saw that packs a huge amount of power into a compact machine. 10 Natural Supplements To Help You Beat H Pylori

I’ve received hundreds of emails from people confused about which natural supplements to take in order to inhibit H pylori. The truth is that there are many companies out there who are eager to take your money and provide very little in the way of answers or support should you feel as though their products are not working.

I hope that by sharing my experience of dealing with hundreds of H pylori cases over the last three years I can help you choose the right path on your journey to wellness.

1. Berberine

Berberine is a constituent of herbs such as goldenseal, barberry and Oregon grape. It has been shown to have broad-spectrum antibiotic activity. Studies in vitro have demonstrated that berberine can inhibit H pylori, but it may not be potent enough to eradicate the organism.

2. Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Root (DGL)

DGL is a well established anti-ulceration and mucosal healing agent. DGL can coat and soothe the intestinal lining and promote the healing of inflamed tissue and ulcers. Research suggests that flavonoids in licorice have impressive antimicrobial activity against H pylori. The flavonoids have actually been shown to have antimicrobial activity against strains of H pylori that were resistant to clarithromycin and amoxicillin, two of the primary antibiotics used in triple therapy. Because DGL has low glyyrrhizin levels it is generally safe to take if you have high or low blood pressure, but please check with a physician.

3. Manuka Honey

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand. It is often promoted as a food that can kill H pylori. Whilst this may be the case, it is worth remembering that honey is essentially sugar. We know that Candida and other species of yeast thrive on sugar and we also know that there is a close relationship between H pylori infection and Candida overgrowth. For this reason, I do not recommend the use manuka honey for people who have digestive problems as I believe there are better alternatives. But you should not rule its use out as it may help you on an individual basis.

4. Mastic Gum

The protocol I originally learned in my functional medicine training involved the use of mastic gum and a supplement called Bio-HPF, which contains several herbs as well as bismuth. Interestingly, bismuth medications are recommended as part of quadruple therapy protocols alongside antibiotics. If you use bismuth products they can turn your stool darker and it is not recommended that you use bismuth for longer than 60-days.

Despite doctors and practitioners reporting great success using the mastic and Bio-HPF program, it didn’t work for me. My symptoms actually worsened when I started taking these supplements. Despite my poor reaction to the mastic program, there is quite a large body of research demonstrating its efficacy against H pylori and mastic gum has been shown to kill H pylori in vitro.

5. Matula Herbal Formula

Matula Herbal Formula resolved my symptoms very quickly. In fact I was staggered by the speed at which my symptoms eased using the product. I have had detailed discussions with the Matula staff and they have a very open and honest approach to business. I read the technical report on Matula that was put together by Professor Patrick J. D. Bouic of the Department of Medical Microbiology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and whilst this is not strictly independent research, it makes for impressive reading In vitro testing on H pylori revealed that every time Matula came into contact with H pylori, it killed 93% of the organisms. Although these tests were performed in vitro (outside the body), the level of clinical success I have observed using Matula has confirmed its effectiveness.

You will doubtless read mixed reports about Matula on the Internet. Because it is a relatively expensive product, people are naturally disappointed if they do not feel better when they take it. But as I taught you in part one of this book and in the H Pylori Diet section, just taking a ‘miracle’ product, whether it’s a pill a tea or a potion, won’t work if your symptoms are being caused by the food that you eat, dehydration and other infections! Unfortunately some folk still believe that they can eat McDonalds three times a day and take a product like Matula that cures all their ills. I’d like to encourage you not to believe everything you read on the Internet, particularly if people have written the material in an emotionally charged state.

6. Siberian Pine Nut Oil

I personally do not have any experience of using pine nut oil. I have read mixed reports about it on the Internet and have received emails from people who have used it without any success. To date I have not seen any research that proves its efficacy. Nevertheless there are some positive testimonials on some websites. Recall that olive oil has been shown to contain antimicrobial properties against H pylori. It is certainly possible that pine nut oil contains similar properties that help it work against the bacteria.

7. Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring chemical found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts. A number of studies have demonstrated that it has the capacity to inhibit H pylori. Eating cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli sprouts, will ensure that you get plenty of sulforaphane, but it is also available in capsule form from several supplement manufacturers, including a product called Broccomax and one called Onco-SGS.

8. Vitamin C

Some studies have suggested that vitamin C may inhibit and even kill H pylori. In a review of the literature, Dr. Alan Gaby, MD concludes that vitamin C therapy for H pylori may be clinically relevant, but that more research is needed to determine the optimal dosing and program duration. Even if vitamin C does not eradicate H pylori, it is still worth taking a controlled dose because studies clearly show that vitamin C levels in the stomach lining can be reduced when H pylori is present, largely as a result of the inflammatory and oxidative stress caused by the infection. Vitamin C is also an excellent nutrient for assisting with gut healing.

9. ‘Vitamin U’

Vitamin U – also known as MSM – is found in raw cabbage. In fact, vitamin U is not actually a vitamin at all. Cabbage juice has been studied extensively in Russia and other Eastern European countries for the healing of damaged and eroded intestinal mucosa. It is not actually a vitamin per se. It appears to enhance the healing of damaged tissue and may assist in healing ulcers.

10. Zinc-L-Carnosine

To my knowledge, zinc-l-carnosine has not been shown to have antimicrobial properties against H pylori. However it is excellent for repairing damage to the stomach lining, including ulcers. It can be taken alongside any of the antimicrobial agents to augment the healing process.


Whilst I’ve done my best to list the natural products that are scientifically and clinically shown to inhibit H pylori bacteria, you still have the problem of knowing exactly which products to buy.

Supplements are not all manufactured under the same conditions and you will find that one bottle of mastic gum from manufacturer A, may be a lot higher quality than a bottle of mastic gum from manufacturer B.

It’s also very important to know how much of each product to take each day, when to take it – with food or on an empty stomach – and for how long. All these factors will influence whether your natural program is successful or not.

The First, Worst Conflict of Bill Gates

The most memorable glass of water Bill Gates ever had, he didn’t drink. When he was twelve years old, Bill Gates got into a conflict with his parents. He got mad, shouted at his mother, and his father admonished him. The remarkable thing about that unpleasant but not uncommon exchange, of a sort that occurs in most families, was how remarkable it was for Gates.

Conflict per se was not unusual for the Gates family as Robert Guth reports in last weekend’s edition of the Wall Street Journal. Through conversations with Bill Gates Sr. and other family members, Guth discovered that the Gates family atmosphere was highly competitive. They often played cards, board games, ping-pong and other sports. There were arguments too. Even as a boy, Bill Jr. was confrontational, stirring up intense discussions with his parents.

In the article Guth focused on what it was like for Bill Sr. to raise Bill Jr., who would become one of the most influential business leaders of our age. At 6’6″ Bill Gates Sr. towers even in adulthood over his son, though he never exercised a domineering presence. And regardless of family competition and quarrels, Bill Sr. rarely lost his composure.

Until one day when Bill Jr. shouted at his mother in an argument. Bill Sr. promptly doused his son with a glass of water and told him to be more respectful. 

This was such an untypical incident in the Gates family experience that it survived vividly in the family lore. They remember it and talk about it, and Guth even led his front-page article with this “water toss” anecdote.

As Guth relates, however, only rarely did the Gates family slip into negative conflict. The water splash puts a memorable punctuation mark on the incident, but it was an isolated incident of loss of temper and poise on the part of Bill Sr., not one of many examples.

The glass of water Bill Jr. wore but did not drink stands out by exception. It was a rare deviation from how the Gates family typically dealt with conflict, and how Bill Jr. learned in his early years about managing conflict and dealing with difficult people (like himself!).

Apart from learning about conflict there are obviously many factors that helped shape Bill Jr.’s eventual business success, including for example his natural drive and intelligence.

Chance surely played a role too. In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell recounts how Gates as a boy in the 1960s had extensive access to state-of-the-art computer resources that happened to be nearby at the University of Washington. Bill Jr. spent over ten thousand hours working with computers as a young man, which exceeded the time even most world-class computer scientists had in that era.

Gates’ unusual access to computers in his youth equipped him with invaluable technical knowledge to help him succeed in the software industry. His computer experience, however, doesn’t explain how Gates accomplished the even more unusual feat of successfully leading an organization for decades of sustained success through all stages of growth, from startup through becoming a global leader.

That story isn’t just technical, it’s interpersonal. Among the important interpersonal factors driving his leadership success is how Gates managed to handle conflict effectively enough to keep talented people working with him through countless challenges over the years.

It’s worth considering that Bill Jr.’s family experience may have helped him internalize the distinction between intensity and insult that often mark the difference between creative conflict and negative conflict.

We should all keep in mind our own “water toss” incidents to remind ourselves to manage the crucial difference between creative conflict that helps people move forward as a group-whether a family or a business team-versus negative conflict which stirs resentment and splinters a group into factions.

Incidentally, the twelve-year-old Gates said in response to his father’s water toss: “Thanks for the shower.” Because this incident is apparently the worst conflict the young Gates had with his father, who otherwise so successfully role-modeled composure and steering away from negative conflict, he might now say, in retrospect, “Thanks for the lesson.”
