Cancer Protection and Vitamin D

As we all know, good dietary sources include fortified foods, eggs, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines. If you take vitamins, no matter which ones, they, should not be taken with the intentions of supplementing your diet and should never replace any medications that you may be currently taking.

A long awaited medical research report was just released (June, 2007) regarding vitamin D. This new report states that vitamin D can indeed protect us humans from several different kinds of cancers including the top 3 killers: colon, lung and breast.

It's long been known that vitamins and other natural supplements can assist the body in helping to ward off certain ailments, but to the extent that something like the readily available and inexpensive vitamin D actually being able to "prevent" a deadly disease is indeed great news . Couple that with the fact this can be obtained by literally spending just pennies a day.

Because of vitamin D's assistance with calcium absorption in the body it has been found to also have a positive role in the prevention of osteoporosis. For this reason it is important to take vitamin D with a good calcium supplement.

Are you one of those person's that unfortunately became sick in the summertime? We all know that vitamin D is also referred to as "sunshine vitamin," thus it places a vital role in the strengthening of our immune system during the summer months. Vitamin D can also prevent colds and flu in the winter time. Research suggests vitamin D may also provide protection from hypertension, psoriasis, and several autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Sunshine converts to vitamin D in our bodies. Since UV rays from the sun is almost non-persistent in winter many people lack this wonderful natural absorption of vitamin D. Of course this does not apply to those fortunately individuals who live close to the equator and have exposure to the sun all year long . Hmmm: wonder why those northern 'Snow Birds' migrate to Florida, the Sunshine State, each year? If you are not a 'Snow Bird' and live in a 'Winter Wonderland' state, consider supplementing your diet with vitamin D. A safe would be about 1000IU a day. However, I am a very firm believer in taking vitamin and mineral supplements on a daily basis and personally take about 3000IU a day, year around.

Be advised that I am not a Health Professional nor am I a Doctor so my advice would be for you to talk to your doctor. However, make sure your doctor is one that appreciates and understands natural supplements and does not have a 'one track mind,' with pen and prescription note pad in hand, ready to write out a 'chemical' solution to your query.

I, personally, have been taking vitamins and minerals for over 10 years. I personally get my hair analyzed once a year. The hair analysis results will tell which vitamins and minerals need to be increased or decreased in my body. My very trusted Health Care Professional recommends the specific designated doses, that "my" body needs. It works! I also exercise on a regular basis and eat healthy foods.

Remember, if you are obese, if you do not eat a healthy diet and / or if you do not get the right amount of exercise, some type of "dis-ease" will catch up to you sooner or later no matter which vitamins and / or minerals you are taking! If you are not doing so already: start living a healthy life "today!" ~ Ms.CiCi ~

The Nitrogen Cycle & Fishless Cycling Methods

What is tank cycling?

In an aquarium or fish bowl the fish give off waste, which over a short time breaks down into toxic ammonia. We all know that ammonia is quite dangerous even in small quantities so as aquarists we need to take steps to combat it. In a small fish bowl that might mean making full 100% water changes every week but what if the tank were larger like 10 gallons or what if it was a body of water like a pond or lake? How do we contend with ammonia in a situation like that? Well, in nature nitrification occurs. This is a natural process where beneficial bacterial intake ammonia and intern creates water conditions safe for aquatic life. In our aquariums we have learned to encourage this bacteria growth and to monitor it so we can recreate a similar ecosystem safe for our fish.

The Old Way

The old way of doing this, and some people still use it, is to set up your tank and add some disposable fish that the aquarist does not care about. For the process to work, ammonia levels first need to build to a level that is unsafe for fish. This is why inexpensive minnows or guppies are used typically. If the fish die during the process it's no major financial loss to you.

These days' aquarists are changing their old ways. We now know how to recreate the nitrogen cycle without using any live animals and can do it just as inexpensively without compromising the health or life of a single fish.

How the process works

The process begins with ammonia building in the tank. Through the old method, the fish would do their business in the water and that waste would breakdown becoming ammonia. Over the course of several days and weeks the ammonia levels would build. Living naturally in the water, on the tank décor, the substrate and filter media are small nitrifying bacteria called nitrosomonas. These are the first bacteria we talk about in the nitrification process because they consume ammonia directly. In their small numbers they begin to consume the ammonia as it builds and as long as there is enough ammonia they will continue to reproduce to consume it almost as fast as it's being created. In the first few weeks the ammonia is created quickly and the numbers of Nitrosomonas are growing … growing … growing. Occasionally the bacteria will catch up to the ammonia and will consume as fast as it's being created. For the first few weeks while you test your water you will see the ammonia levels rising and ever reaching the point where they spike and then begin to fall as the bacteria consume it.

These Nitrosomonas also give off a waste product. They expel nitrite. And you may know that nitrite is also a toxin very dangerous to your fish, thought not quite as much so as ammonia. As these Nitrosomonas reproduce, nitrite levels begin to rise until they too reach a level unsafe for your fish. Fortunately, nature has provided a second type of nitrifying bacteria called nitrospira. Nitrospira consume nitrite. So as the nitrite levels rise the Nitrospira bacteria reproduce in order to consume it all. This second type of bacteria also, like the first, give off a waste product called nitrate. Nitrate, unlike nitrite and ammonia is much less toxic to fish and can build to much higher levels before it becomes a problem. The only way to remove nitrate is to perform partial water changes. We usually do that by removing 20% each week and replacing it with clean conditioned tap water.

The New Fishless Method

The Fishless Cycling Method works exactly the same way as the original cycling method only no fish are used. Instead, we buy pure ammonia or ammonia diluted with water at our local grocery store and add it directly to the tank instead of adding fish. There are actually two types of ammonia; there is ammonia hydroxide, which is what you buy at the grocery store. It is not as great an option as ammonia chloride because it can affect the pH a little bit and it is also typically diluted with water but we often do not know how much so how much we add is trial and error. Ammonia hydroxide, however, is very readily available and I have used it many times. Even though it's not the first choice, it works well and easy to find.

What You'll Need to Get Started:

– Tank

– Filter & Filter Media

– Substrate

– Pure Ammonia

– Eye Dropper

– Salicylate Ammonia Test Kit

– Nitrite Test Kit

– Nitrate Test Kit

– PH Test Kit

– Water Conditioner

– Pen & Paper

Optional

– Filter media or gravel from an established tank.

– Air-stone (for aquariums with little surface agitation)

– Air-pump

– Reverse-flow valve

– Tubing

Part I: Tank Set-up

1. Rinse the substrate and add it to your empty tank. This substrate will house much of the beneficial bacteria that will live in your tank. A rougher substrate like sand or gravel will be a better home to bacteria then smooth large rocks or marbles.

2. Fill your tank with room temperature tap water. Add your water conditioner.

3. Connect your filter. There are many different types of filters on the market and the type you choose depends on the tank size, bioload (or amount of fish waste) and personal preference. HOB (Hang on Back) filters that come with a bio-wheel are nice because the wheel provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria to cling. The filter media itself will house the majority of all the beneficial bacteria in your tank. You do not want to cycle a tank without a filter nor do you want to keep a filter in an aquarium that you do not intend to cycle. (ie 100% water changes instead) Doing so will force your tank to perpetually cycle exposing your fish to toxins repeatedly.

If you plan on using filter media from an established tank, add it at this time. The bacteria you will be culturing is already present in your tank so seeding is not needed. Adding the established filter media, however, may dramatically reduce the total time needed to fully cycle your tank.

4. Measure out the amount of tubing you will need for the air-stone to reach from the bottom of your tank to the air pump. Connecting the reverse flow valve will ensure that your pump will not accidently begin siphoning water out of your tank in the event of a power outage. This valve is very inexpensive and can be found near the air stones in most fish stores. Attach the air-stone and place it in your tank. HOB filters provide a fair amount of surface agitation, which oxygenates the water. An air stone and pump are not necessary with an HOB filter but some other types that do not oxygenate well may need the air stone.

5. Now that your tank is all set up it's a good idea to run the gambit of tests to see what your water parameters are fresh out of the tap without any additives. Record these results. You may find there is already some ammonia present. It is quite common to find up to 0.5 ppm or greater in your tap water.

Part II: Cycling

1. When cycling with fish it is the fish themselves that excrete ammonia which is consumed by the bacteria, but since we are cycling without fish it's up to us to provide enough ammonia to sustain and encourage growth of the bacteria. Ammonia can be purchased from a grocery store or hardware store. Be sure to check that the ingredients are solely ammonia hydroxide and water. Be sure there are no detergents or artificial colors added to the bottle. If you are unsure, shake the bottle gently. Suds will appear if detergents are present.

2. The potency of ammonia hydroxide depends on the brand you buy and there is no exact quantity to add to your tank water. Unfortunately, trial and error is the only way to determine how much to add. Begin by adding about 3 – 5 drops per gallon of water, allow it to mix for a few minutes and then test your ammonia levels with your salicylate ammonia test kit. You will absolutely want to add enough ammonia to equal the potential bioload. For most simple tank set ups, an ammonia level of about 2.0 ppm will suffice. After testing your water, add enough ammonia to bring it up to the 2.0 ppm level. If it goes a little over that is ok. Retest your ammonia level and record your results.

3. Each day, add enough ammonia to keep the level at about 2.0 ppm. Test your tank for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate each day. Record your results after each test. Check your pH often as well. Any sudden drop or rise in pH can cause your beneficial bacteria to die off and slow or halt your progress. Over the next 1 – 2 weeks the beneficial bacteria that consume ammonia will begin to break down the ammonia you have been adding and will continue to multiply to meet the demand. Those bacteria give off nitrite as a byproduct. Once nitrite begins showing on your tests you will know the cycle is well under way.

4. At the point your tests show nitrite levels beginning to raise you can cut the amount of ammonia you add each day by half. As ammonia-consuming bacteria multiply, you will see the ammonia levels drop and nitrite levels rise. The second type of beneficial bacteria that lives in your tank will consume harmful nitrite and then themselves, give off less harmful nitrate as a byproduct.

5. Because of this second type of bacteria, you will then see the nitrite levels drop and the nitrate levels begin to rise. This usually occurs around weeks 3 – 4.

6. Once the ammonia levels fall back to zero, the nitrite levels fall back to zero and the nitrate levels are showing on your tests, then and only then, is your tank completely cycled. Congratulations!

7. At this point you will want to do a partial water change to keep nitrates at a safe level. Usually around 10 – 20 ppm is fine. After this water change your water with a conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals and acclimate your fish. If you do not have fish to add right away, be sure to keep adding ammonia daily to keep the cycle going until you are ready.

8. To maintain a safe environment, do partial 20% water changes each week to keep the nitrate levels in the safe range. On occasion, it's a good idea to test your water for ammonia & nitrite just to make sure the cycle is continuing. Nitrate and pH tests should be performed at least weekly. Once your tank is cycled it can stay cycled for many years with proper maintenance.

Blips in the Cycle

Occasional your tank may experience a blip in the cycle or may go through a mini-cycle when the ammonia production is not equal with the nitrifying bacterial population. This can happen when you add new fish to the tank and there is suddenly more ammonia being produced then previously or if you perform tank maintenance like your filter media or substrate. In most cases this will correct itself quickly without your ever noticing. Whenever you do observe health problems with your fish it's recommended to test your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels first to see if a cycling problem has occurred.

Why Tank Cycling is Better

Cycling your aquariums provides a significantly more stable environment for your fish greatly reducing the likelihood that they will contract illnesses due to stress. Additionally, the maintenance on a cycled aquarium is a fraction of that required for an unicycles tank. It only needs partial water changes rather than full water changes and water testing can be done far less frequently than in the unstable environment created when a tank has not been cycled. In the end, it's safer for the fish and a lot less time and money for you.

Tumeric For Flavour, Colour and Health

Curcuma Longa, a rhizome and member of the ginger family, grows wild in the forests of Southeast Asia. It has been used for culinary, medicinal and ceremonial preparations for many thousands of years. The scientific community have recently tapped into its medicinal potential, revealing to the world this Ancient Indian Ayurvedic superfood, healing root and natural anti-biotic.

Ayurveda, the holistic medical science originating in India, reveres Tumeric for its ability to calm the stomach, fight ear and sinus infections, anti-inflammatory effects for arthritis, to kill internal parasites, to regulate women’s cycles, for reproductive health and to purify the blood. When mixed with honey, it can be taken at the onset of any flu symptoms and even applied to skin irritations or wounds, it accelerates healing (especially in diabetic patients) and its anti-septic qualities avoid any infections.

Tumeric is also known as one of the most effective and useful ingredients in natural beauty recipes. It is used as the skin softener in Asia, a paste made from sandlewood powder, milk cream and Rosewater is applied all over the body. This is an important step in wedding ceremonies in India. Beforehand the bride and groom are treated with this by each others families to see if there were any blemishes, birth marks, or even any moles placed in unlucky positions of the body! It is also used in religious and spiritual ceremonies in temples and places of worship.

Its no co-incidence that Indian culinary traditions are full of herbs and spices, and dairy preparations like ghee. Many of these components that make up a ‘curry’ are actually medicinal and along with their predominantly vegetarian diet, results in India having the lowest colon cancer rates in the world.

Tumeric’s distinctly warm earthy and even tangy flavours add a very unique addition to cuisine of India, the Middle East, Jamaica, South America, Africa and South East Asia. Colouring everything it touches with that yellow/orange hue we know from Indian cooking. Where it is grown fresh, the leaves of the plant are also used to wrap foods for cooking giving the contents a distinctive subtle flavour, in the same way that banana leaves do. It not only adds colour, flavour and medicinal qualities to your foods, but is also used in the food industry as a natural preservative because of its antibacterial and anti-fungal activity.

Tumeric & Curcuminoids

Curcumin, a word you will definitely hear more about, is one of the active ingredients (curcuminoids) of turmeric. It is extracted and used in combination with other plant extracts in many natural medicines and supplements.

Curcuminoids are high in antioxidents, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, anti-tumor, anti-arthritic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, anti-microbial, anti- thrombotic, anti-amyloid, anti-viral and anti-ischemic. Buying Silver Bars Online: Pros And Cons

Silver is a precious metal whose popularity has greatly grown over the last few years. While there are some people who think that it's better to buy the bars than a physical shop, there are others who think that it's wise to buy them online.

If you are wondering which are the pros and cons of buying the bullions online, here they are:

Pros

Privacy: while there is nothing shameful in buying silver online, some people like to keep their involvement with the metals private. This is because if people know that you are having a lot of silver in your home or office, you might have unscrupulous people approaching you and trying to steal from you.

Shopping online allows you to buy without anyone noticing that you are making the purchases.

Convenience: in addition to being private, buying online also gives you a lot of convenience. This is because it's very easy to buy online. To make the purchase you only need to access a website, click a few buttons, enter the payment details, and you will be able to make the purchase at the comfort of your house.

Buying from your local store is time consuming because you need to travel to the store for you to make the purchase. You also have to wait for the store open for you to make your purchase. This is contrary to buying online where you buy at any time.

It's cheaper: buying silver online is usually cheaper compared to buying from a physical store. The reason for this is because the online market is very competitive.

For you to buy the silver bars at super low prices, it's recommended that you buy from an out of state retailer. This is because by buying from such a seller you are exempt from sales tax.

Cons

Just like anything else in life, buying silver bars online comes with a number of disadvantages.

One disadvantage is that you buy something that you can not see which means that you can easily be delivered with something that you do not want.

Another disadvantage is that you have to wait for the delivery of the silver. This is unlike buying from your local store where you go home with the silver that you buy.

These are the pros and cons of buying silver bars online. For you to make the most from your online purchases, you should ensure that you buy from a reputable company that will not rip you off.

Things to Do Before Paint Preparation and Application

An individual needs to do some kind of work which is known as the basic preparation if you have to get your home or room painted. If you ask anyone what the basic preparation should be, they would simply ask you to move out everything from the room and get it thoroughly cleaned. If there are some immovable things, simply cover and drape them with plastic or related material so that not even a single drop of paint sticks over it. Along with this, the switch boards, doors, window panels, etc should also be covered.

Once you have emptied the room, the next step would be to clean the walls. If the walls will not be clean, paint application will not be even and then will not give results as expected. Apart from clearing the dust and dirt, it is also important to prime it and make it even. Holes and chips need to be removed and the putty application has to be done to even everything out.

A good painter would always start the work from the top and then move to the bottom as paint always drips down. Since this process involves a lot of focus and hard work, choose a painter who has a considerable amount of experience so that things are expected the way they are expected.

There are a variety of paint strokes and techniques and which out of these are the perfect one is a highly debatable topic. Most of the painters have their own style that they have gained with years of experience in painting. In addition to this, some painters use brushes while the others use foam rollers and this always results in varied techniques of painting. No matter what style is used, the only thing important is that the paint should look even and the repairs should be hidden completely thus making the walls look new and fresh.

In most of the cases, the painters use foam rollers for interior painting as they are easy to use and give better results. Another fact that needs to be kept in mind is regarding the overuse of paint. A good painter would never use a lot of paint but instead would do thin coats to get the best results. Do not expect results just after the first coat as the best results only come after the second coat is applied and is completely discharged.

A painter goes through skill tests when working on the corners, rims and edges as this is considered as the most difficult part of painting. Make sure painter does these areas carefully and with proper finish. These simple tips the painters keep in mind but if you know about them you can make sure that no care is done by them while painting.

Hiring a Plumbing Contractor For Your New House

The term ‘contractor’ is used for a person indulged in the construction services. And construction includes building new structures, roads or dams as well as modifying or repairing the existing ones. Further the role is divided into different types of contractor depending on nature of construction work handled by them. For instance, if you are planning to build a new home, you would need services of building contractors, electrical contractors, remodeling contractors, painting contractors, plumbing contracts, landscapers etc. Plumbing contractor is a person who is involved with plumbing works like laying pipelines and fixing plumbing fittings like bath tubs, sinks, faucets, toilets etc.

You would need the services of a plumbing contractor at the time of building your new house as well as for maintenance of your old plumbing fittings. When you are constructing a new home, the amount of plumb work required is too comprehensive. You should discuss the plumbing requirements with your main contractor. He must have appointed a plumber for all the immediate plumbing needs like laying main pipes and fitting bathroom fixtures etc. however, if you wish to appoint a different plumbing contractor, then you can ask your building contractor to cooperate with your decisions. A plumbing contractor should work in close coordination with the building contractor. A plumber should have a clear idea about the building’s layout and foundation in order to create a proper foundation for underground plumbing fittings.

If your plumbing works are too extensive it would be wise to appoint a reputed plumbing contractor to oversea the entire plumbing division of your construction. However, finding a reliable contractor who can deliver you with quality plumbing fixtures and equipments is a challenging job. There are many factors to be considered before finalizing the contract with a plumbing service or company. You should not sign up the deal with the first plumbing service you come across. You should only hire the services of a reputed plumbing company or contractor who has years of experience to boast about.

You can search for feasible plumbing contractor in your locality by initiating a casual online search. There are online directories where you will find hundreds of plumbing services listed along with their contact numbers and address. You can enquire the nature of service and rates quoted by each of these contractors by placing a direct call.

If you have any specific demands you should discuss the same with a potential plumbing contractor before finalizing the agreement or paying the advance sum. Ideally, a plumber should accommodate his services as per your demands rather than thrusting his opinions on you. Further, he should be able to procure all the hardware requirements at cheaper rates. These contractors have connection with many hardware dealers, so it wouldn’t be tough for them to procure bulk orders at economic rates.

Finally, you should enquire about the past working history of your contractor. You can visit a few house owners with whom your contractor has worked with. This would give you a fair idea about the nature and quality of his service.

Bamboo – Still the Right Choice for Construction in Any Case

History of Bamboo

Bamboo grows in its native locations of South America and Asia. It's commonly used in homes as a primary material for building. Concrete, steel and timber are also popular choices, but for those looking for green solutions there is no match for bamboo. Bamboo bathroom cabinets, floors, walls and more are all implemented, and even scaffolding and structural supports are made from bamboo.

Bamboo was and is the greatest choice for building projects, and once one learns why they are quite disagree.

Why it's the Best Choice

Due to its make-up, bamboo is the ideal material for most builds. Maturity of bamboo is reached within just two years, making it despite the most fast-growing material for building on the market. Its strength is unmatched, even by steel; while its elasticity makes it perfect for areas that see some natural disaster. Finally, it's lightweight nature makes it easy to work with, and more affordable to ship.

One area in which bamboo does not trump other woods is that it is still able to rot and become infested by wood boring and damaging insects. Thankfully there are treatments that protect it and preserve it for long-lasting enjoyment.

Engineered Options

Paneled bamboo flooring that's been engineered candidates buildings with a resilient and very durable product. Of course, it depends on the manufacturer as to the quality of the engineered bamboo; but many types can be even more strong and sturdy than hardwood.

It's used much like natural bamboo in bathroom cabinets and kitchens. Flooring is also very popular and the quick installation is favorable to many home and business owner. In recent studies, it's been found that engineered bamboo is just as good, if not better than other wood products.

Versatility

Due to the various bamboo finishes, it can flow seamlessly with other woods. That makes it easy to add to existing décor. If one varies bamboo bathroom cabinets but has an oak wood floor, there is no reason to fret. Finishes are similar from most manufacturers, and if anything it can be beaten and renovated with ease.

Designers are only limited to their imagination for bamboo bathroom cabinets, and they can be installed under a sink, above, in a corner for towels and so much more. The beautiful grain that can run either horizontally or vertically lends itself to a very stylistic and classy room that everyone will enjoy.

Durability

One would be hard pressed to find a type of wood that is as durable as bamboo. Bamboo bathroom cabinets, kitchen elements and floors will stand the test of time. Bamboo is very easy to care for as well by following some simple steps, and this will contribute to its longevity.

· Wipe bamboo bathroom cabinets with a damp cloth

· Avoid using abrasive products

· Steer clear of harsh chemicals

· Re-seal bamboo as needed to keep it looking fresh and new

· In worst-case scenarios, bamboo can be sanded and re-stained to the home or business owner's liking.

Both in engineered products as well as all natural, bamboo gives many advantages. It grows fast as mentioned before, it's completely versatile and while some of the options are a bit pricey bamboo makes up for that cost in its longevity. Developers and architects constantly choose bamboo bathroom cabinets, kitchen cabinets, floors, walls and structural elements and for good reason.

While shopping for these hair accessories, it is good to keep in mind that the same product that can be found in a beauty supply shop can also be found in a drug store for a lot cheaper. Since as a woman, you probably style your hair every day, you need a lot of hair accessories so it is good to keep the cost of these products down for expense purposes.

Interior Waterproofing of Basement – The 3 Simple Steps

No matter what type of walls or flooring you have in your basement, the room is not strictly protected from leakage. Stone, clay, block or scattered walls are all susceptible to cracks, leaks and deterioration. If you happen to use the basement a lot, it's time to start an interior waterproofing of basement.

First, understand that water can find its way into your foundation through the loose ground that surrounds your home's foundation. When dirt is steadily deposited into your drain pipes, water becomes entrapped and consequentially causes hydrostatic pressure. Thus, leakage occurs in your basement.

1. Prevent

To prevent leakage, concentrate on sealing walls and draining water away from the foundation of your home when planning an interior waterproofing of basement. Use silicone caulk or tanking mechanisms to fill in cracks, holes and depressions on walls. Either solution will literally hold water back from your basement walls.

Furthermore, try using drainage systems along with your sealants when assembling the interior waterproofing of basement. Cavity drainage can be placed in wall and floor linings to push water away. Use the exterior foundation drain if you want superior protection. The exterior foundation drain is convenient in a way that it uses gravity to pump water out so you will not actually need pumps or electricity.

Interior waterproofing of foundation is useful if you are on a budget. Interior waterproofing is actually more affordable compared to exterior waterproofing. Exterior waterproofing will need excavation and therefore costs so much more.

2. Cut down moisture

As mentioned earlier, moist can do excessive damage on almost any material. So even if you've already sealed wall cracks and provided drainage systems, you still need to be prepared. For example, the weather could be extremely humid for a very long period of time, or rainstorms can recur more often. You may not know just how many cracks your walls actually have. The bottom line is, the more moisture there is the more leakage and mold problems you're going to have.

Enhance protection from sealants and drainage systems by lessening moisture levels in your basement. When preparing for your interior waterproofing of foundation, dispose of fabric, carpets and curtains, as these types of material retain moisture. Use materials that have smoother surfaces.

3. Maintaining It

There's no point in sealing and draining water away from your basement if it still reeks of mold and mildew. The unpleasantness will remain if there's too much moisture. Maintain a dry environment by encouraging good ventilation and regular cleaning of appliances.

You can use fans, dehumidifiers and air-conditioning. These can keep moisture and molds at bay. Clean appliances every now and then so condensation does not form.

You can prevent leakage problems from increasing if you start treating them now. Interior waterproofing of basement could actually be a simple task. Just be proactive once you notice the slightest leakage.

Installing a Drip Irrigation System For Your Outdoor Container Garden

Automated gardens are the most efficient way to grow fruits and vegetables. An outdoor garden can still be automated because the sun is the light and you have no control over that. Watering and feeding can also be automated to ensure your plants are getting everything they need. Self-watering containers may be the only way to keep plants from drying up in the middle of a hot summer day. If temperatures are getting above 85F your plants are probably thirsty! It is too big of a hassle to hand water your plants all day to ensure they get what they need. You may not be there when they need the water and your plants should not rule your life. You may be making a homeless ventilation system to water your plants while you are on vacation, but when you return you will ask yourself, "Why do not I always use an automated system?"

If you are new to drip systems you will want to read the Introduction to Drip Systems to get acquainted with the parts I'll be discussing. For this project you will need:

* 1/2 inch tubing

* 1/2 inch tube end clamp

* 1/4 inch tubing

* Drip line hole punch

* Submersible water pump

* Drip emitters

* Air pump

* Air tubing

* Air Stone

* Reservoir

* Tupperware container

* Digital Timer

* Possibly extension cords

As always, your first step is to plan out your container garden. Find the arrangement you want to use to maximize sunlight. Keep in mind that your tubing will have to reach from your reservoir to your container garden. The size of your water pump will determine how much reach you have to play with. Do not forget your water pump also has power through your connections and drip emitters. Water pumps are one of the most expensive parts of the home made drip system, but they usually come with at least a one year warranty. Once you realize the productivity ratio of self-watering containers you will not want to go back to daily hand watering.

Put the end of the half inch tubing through one end of an end clamp and create a kink. Wrap the tube around the kink 2-3 times and thread the end through the other side of the end clamp. The result should be a closed off water proof end to create pressure through the drip system tubing. Put the other end of the 1/2 inch tubing on the end of the water pump.

Once your pump is assembled you are ready to make your drip lines. Punch holes in the half inch tubing where you want your 1/4 inch drip lines to start. Do not push through the vinyl or whatever material tubing you are using too hard or you will go through both ends and create a leak.

There is a wide array of drip emitters you can choose from at your hydroponics shop. You can get inline or compensating drippers which are explained in more detail in the Introduction to Drip Systems guide I mentioned earlier. You can also get mini sprinklers and other types of emitters for different purposes. This system is built with compensating drip emitters because the half inch tube sets on the ground and the 1/4 inch tubes climb the length of the container.

Put 1/4 inch straight connections on the end of the drip line with no drip emitter. The straight connector goes into the hole you made earlier in the half inch tubing. The connection is how water gets from your 1/2 inch main tube to your individual drip lines. Fewer connection bridges and fewer drip emitters means more power and further reach.

This is a lengthy guide for a homemade drip system, but bare with me and you'll be on your way to irritation freedom! Next step is to prepare your water reservoir. Drill or burn a hole through the side of your reservoir to put the half inch tube through. If you just want your lid to sit on top of your reservoir that is fine, you can tape it down. Expect greater evaporation rates and contamination if you do not use a sealed lid. Keep in mind a cleaner grow space is a better grow space.

You will have to put the end of the half inch tube that is connected to your water pump through the hole before connecting the pump. The water pump will not fit through your 1/2 inch hole! This step is really easy using a drill with a 1/2 inch circle drill bit. If you are using plastic make sure you do not crack the side of the reservoir. If it does crack easily you are probably using a material that is too weak to hold water for long periods of time.

For this outdoor reservoir I bought a container that already had holes in the handle. Since it could rain in the area where the reservoir is it could fill with rain water and knock the lid off the top. You can drill your own drain holes with a simple drill bit if you are planning to use a container without them.

Once your water pump is in place and suctioned down to the bottom of your reservoir you are ready to add the aeration device. The air pump will oxygenate the reservoir and ensure the water keeps moving. Stagnant water can get pretty nasty and your plants love oxygen in the root zone. If you are unsure on how to set up an air pump check out my guide on installing air pumps in hydroponic systems.

One thing you will probably not find at your local hydroponics shop is a cheap water proofed air pump. The lack of water proof air pumps seem to discourage most hydroponics gardeners from using the natural sun. A smart do it yourself gardener can find a solution. You will need to get a plastic container of some sort that comes with a lid that seals tight. Poke a hole in that container near the top. Make sure the hole is just big enough for your electric plug and air tube to come through. I used a screwdriver to create a small crack for both things to go through.

Put the air tubing through the hole before you connect it to the air pump. You do not want the hole to be bigger than it has to be. A large container is safer because the hole can be higher off the ground and away from potential flooding. Do not put the hole through the lid of the container because rain will get into your electronics!

I placed the reservoir and water proofed air pump in a covered area with electrical outlets. I had to use extension cords to get the air pump to reach the outlet. I also needed a 3-prong extension cord for the water pump. The digital timer you use to automatically turn your water pump on and off also needs to be in a covered area where rain can not get into the parts.

Novice gardeners – do not get the idea air pumps are too complex or unnecessary for you. That's your first mistake as a novice gardener! Automate your electricity and add oxygen and whatever else the plants need. Reaching for 100% is how you get perfect plants!

Your friends will be jealous when they see how "high tech" your garden is! Now that your reservoir is up and running you are ready to finish your automated drip system.

Position your containers around the drip line so all the lines can reach their desired area. I used two drip emitters per container because they are three gallons and up. On 1 -2 gallon containers one drip emitter may cover the whole medium over a drip period of a few minutes. At the very least it will keep your plants alive while you are on vacation. Having a small drip cycle with outdoor plants will adjust for rain. Say you are gone for a week and it rains for three of those days. Those three days it was unnecessary for your drip system to run! It may have had a detrimental factor because of excessive watering. Make sure your containers have good drainage and choose your medium carefully. Well mixed growing mediums are key to ensuring your plants succeed. Different plants benefit from different growing environments and growing mediums.

TIP: Some digital timers come with a day setting. The day setting will allow you to run your drip system every other day or in different intervals. You may want your drip system to run 3 times a day alternating with 1 time a day. If this tip is confusing you, come back to it later when you have worked with timer settings for your drip system.

How to Properly Anchor Your Boat

We lived on our sailboat Shadowtime for eight years in the Caribbean.

Observing other boats go through what we called anchor drill said a lot about their sailing skills.

When done properly anchoring is a simple drill… no yelling is necessary, it takes a very short period of time, and resetting the anchor is almost never required.

You always anchor with your boat going very slowly directly into the wind.. if the anchorage is unfamiliar the chart should be consulted first for what depth of water to expect.

If your boat draws say 6 feet of water you should look to anchor in 12 feet or water or less.

A cruising sailor will almost always have his primary anchor… usually a plow type, like a CQR brand, on 200 feet of chain. The heavier the anchor, we had a 35 pounder, the less likely the anchor would come loose and require resetting… we had friends with a 45 pound CQR, they referred to as their sleeping pill.

When anchoring, in 12 feet water, the rule of thumb is to have eight times the depth of water in chain deployed, in this case 96 feet of chain. The more chain you have lying flat on the bottom the less chance the anchor will break free.

The competent sailor, on the bow will ask for the depth of the water by using a hand signal… one finger pointing down… the person on the wheel reads the depth gauge and reports the depth…this is the only voice communication required when anchoring, the rest is simple hand signals.

Once the proper depth has been selected another hand signal is given to put the boat in neutral… the anchor is then dropped, the proper amount of chain is deployed, and you wait for 30 seconds or so to let the wind move the boat to where the anchor chain starts to become taut.

At this point another hand signal is given to put the boat in reverse… as the anchor chain becomes taut and straightens out… the anchorer will signal for the boat to be put in neutral… the boat slightly springing forward is an indication that the anchor is set.

If you are confident that the anchor is set, you attach the “snubber”…a snubber is 8 to 10 feet of line with a hook appropriately sized for the size of chain that you have… usually 3/8 or one half-inch.

You lean over the bow and attach the snubber to the deployed anchor chain, putting some slack in the chain between the snubber and where you tie the snubber off to a cleat on the boat.

The snubber acts as a shock absorber… chains don’t give much… and reduces the sound of the anchor chain to a minimum… you’ll know quickly if the snubber falls off due to the noise of the anchor chain.

Learning how to properly set your anchor is a skill all successful cruising sailors possess… if you do it right the first time… you’ll never have to do anchor drill at 2 AM.

Proper anchoring will set you apart from the rookies and help guarantee a good nights sleep on board.

Tips on Choosing an Ideal Cabin

When you are choosing an ideal cabin, then it can be a bit intimidating, especially when you have no idea where to start. There are some aspects that are worth consideration and they include:

The appearance:

You should always start with something that is appealing to you. Since this is something that you will always have to live with, it is important to be proud of it. Choosing the ideal factory means that you will have a wide range to select from. Essentially, you will have so many options that can be included and the company can integrate some of your suggestions.

Flooring:

Natural timber is always an ideal material for the floor. The thickness of the floor is also as important. Choosing a thinner flooring means that you will feel like you are bouncing around. This is one of the reasons as to why you should consider flooring that is 28 mm in thickness.

Glazing, doors, and windows:

If the intention is to have a garden room or a home office, then you should go for double-glazing. There are some instances when single glazing can still be perfect. The doors and the windows also need to be perfect. It is important to make sure that these are able to serve the purpose for which they are meant and with great ease.

Insulation:

It is possible to insulate just the under the floor. Some can also be insulated within the roof. If you are planning to use it as a permanent accommodation, or even as an office, then an insulated cabin is the best option for you. There are some that include an outer wall and an inner one. This thickness provides great rigidity and little distortion. The cavity or gap that is within offers insulation. You can make your own specifications if you choose to go bespoke.

Size:

The size always matters. It is very important to have a size that meets all your needs and fits your space.

Wall thickness:

There are different thicknesses that you can think of. Choose the thickest that you can afford. When you choose a thicker option, it will be more robust and will be better when it comes to insulation. It will also last long. Choose a provider who has a wide choice of thickness options.

A Brief Guide to Printed Circuit Boards

Paul Eisle invented the first PCB in 1936. However, it became popular only in the 1950s when the US military started using the technology in bomb detonators. Today, PCB Circuit Boards are an integral part of almost all equipment, like cars, mobile phones, computers and more.

How Is A Printed Circuit Board Manufactured?

To make a custom PCB, first the electronic diagram of the required circuit is prepared using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. After that the PCB prototype is developed using Computer Aided Manufacturing Software technology.

The common materials used for manufacturing PCBs are: FR4, FR4 High Temperature, Polyimide, GeTek, Rogers, Arlon, Nelco, Alumina, Ceramic, Bakelite, FR1, CEM1, and CEM5. The size and thickness of the board depends upon the requirements of the circuit. The substrate is coated with a layer of copper. Then, using photosensitive coating, the circuit diagram is printed on the board. The undesired copper is etched out from the board to form copper “tracks”, called traces. This process is known as Photoengraving. There are two other common methods used for developing connecting traces. PCB milling is a mechanical system where undesired copper is removed with CNC machines. Another process is Silk-Screen printing, where special ink that is etch-resistant is used to cover the areas where the copper traces have to be made.

Once the board is ready with copper traces, holes are drilled into the board to assemble leaded electrical and electronic components. For drilling, special Tungsten Carbide drill bits or laser is used. The holes made are filled with hollow rivets or coated through using an electroplating process, thus forming an electrical connection among the various layers. The next step is coating of the entire board, except holes and pads, with masking material. Materials commonly used for this purpose are: lead solder, lead free solder, OSP (Entek), deep/hard gold (electrolytic nickel gold), immersion gold (electroless nickel gold – ENIG), wire bondable gold (99.99% pure gold), immersion silver, flash gold, immersion tin (white tin), carbon ink, and SN 100CL, an alloy of tin, copper, and nickel. The last step is screen-printing, where the legend and text are printed on the PCB.

Testing Of PCB

Before assembly of components or delivery of Printed Circuit Boards, the board should be tested to find any possible “shorts” and “opens” that could lead to a non-functioning board. A “short” indicates the existence of an undesired connection and an “open” indicates that two points that should have been connected are unconnected. All such errors should be fixed before PCB assembly. It is important to note that not all PCB Manufacturing shops test the boards before shipping, it is sometimes considered an added cost but a vital one to provide a fully functioning board before adding components.

PCB Assembly

Once the board is ready, components are assembled and added to the surface as per the circuit diagram. Some of the common assembly techniques used are surface-mount construction and through-hole construction. Sometimes, a combination of these two techniques is also used for assembly.

Types of Printed Circuit Boards

Single Sided Board

This is the least complex of the Printed Circuit Boards, since there is only a single layer of substrate. All electrical parts and components are fixed on one side and copper traces are on the other side.

Double Sided Board

This is the most common type of board, where parts and components are attached to both sides of the substrate. In such cases, double-sided PCBs that have connecting traces on both the sides are used. Double-sided Printed Circuit Boards usually use through-hole construction for assembly of components.

Multi Layered Board

Multi layered PCB consists of several layers of substrate separated by insulation. Most common multilayer boards are: four layers, six layers, eight layers, and 10 layers. However, the total number of layers that can be manufactured can exceed over 42 layers. These types of boards are used in extremely complex electronic circuits.
