Paint On Your Own With Professional Results

Fresh coats of paint can make your home look fresh and just the way you want it. New exterior paint can make your home look appealing and inviting. It can be fun to pick colors for such projects. Yet the biggest barriers are often the time involved and the cost when you hire someone else. With a paint sprayer, you can paint on your own and get professional results.

You will be able to save both time and money. At the same time, you can get the appearance you want anywhere inside or outside of your home. Take your time to compare the various paint sprayer products out there. They are offered with various features and in various sizes. Think about the scope of the work you will do with the tool, and go from there.

Use with Ease

Even though a paint sprayer is going to offer you an array of features and benefits, the product is not going to be hard to use. The company takes pride in offering user-friendly products for do it yourself products. This is why so many of the home improvement stores offer such products. You can also find them online and have them shipped quickly.

Of course, you still need to follow the directions for the specific model you buy. This will make sure you get the most benefit from the product and it lasts a long time. Never assume these products are the same. While they may be similar, there are significant differences to take note of.

Fast Application

You will be able to get the paint applied in a fraction of the time with a paint sprayer versus a roller. This means you can get a professional look but you are not going to spend tons of your time to get it done. Most paint jobs must at least two coats, and you will be able to get that all done with ease. You can do it in sections and you will love seeing the progress.

Even Flow

One of the benefits of using a paint sprayer is the even flow design. You do not want to paint your be thicker in some areas than in others. You do not want to have paint splatter or blotches either. They will be hard to cover up and you do not want to leave them because they will be an eyesore. Instead, you want the paint to go on evenly and smoothly.

In order for that to happen, you need to make sure you spend enough time prepping the surface. This includes removing paint that has chipped for exterior jobs and washing the walls and the ceiling for interior painting.

Easy to Clean Up

Once the job is done, you will be appreciative of the fact you can clean a paint sprayer with ease. The process is to make sure it can be packed away until you are ready to use it again. Yet there will not be any gunk or residue inside of it that can compromise how well it works the next time around.

Durable and Affordable

This is a well-known brand with plenty of local consumers due to the durable nature of the products. The materials are carefully selected to hold up well to the ingredients in paint products and storage. They are also considered a good investment as the price is reasonable for such a product. In fact, you will often find them priced lower than competitor products.

That is very encouraging, especially since you know you will be saving money but not compromising anything about quality. This is a painting project tool you can put to use and be very happy with from start to finish.

Angular Cheilitis: Are You Likely To Contract Angular Cheilits?

Did you know that there are millions of people sentenced to contract Angular Cheilitis and not aware of it? On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are several million people searching for a solution to cure Angular Cheilitis.

One could ask the question, "Who are the people sentenced to contract this dreaded disease?"

In this article we answer that very question. However, to provide an effective answer we must begin by discussing what Angular Cheilitis actually is.

Angular Cheilitis is a skin condition which affects the corners of the mouth and the skin from above the mouth and below it. In the course of time, Angular Cheilitis causes painful sores to appear in the edges of your mouth and below the lips. Once it reaches this stage in the process it has been commonly referred to as mouth ulcers.

Now that we have a basic understanding of what Angular Cheilitis is, it is best to describe the categories of individuals prior to contract and suffer from the virus.

Category Number 1 (People Who Have Excessive Sweat)

Did you know that individuals who excessively sweat are highly prone to contract Angular Cheilitis? In most cases these individuals contract the condition by retaining excess sweat and saliva inside the skin folds, near the mouth. Are you one of these individuals?

A quick way to help slow down Angular Cheilitis from forming is to dry out those particular areas with a dry cloth. You should also pay particular attention to your perspiration levels and stay in areas that are cool, if at all possible.

Category Number 2 (Wearers of Dentures)

If you wear denture there is a high probability you are acceptable to Angular Cheilitis. Individuals who have had their teeth extracted and consequentially wear dentures notice that their mouth closes more than necessary. When this happens, the deformation of the skin is likely to occur.

When the skin deforms, cracks near the folds of the mouth typically follow. Where ever cracks and folds develop, moisture is likely to see in, making Angular Cheilitis an unfortunate occurrence.

The situation becomes exasperated if the dentures do not fit well. Excess saliva develops due to the improper fitting of the dentures, increasing the likelihood of the virus to remain longer even while being treated.

Category Number 3 (The Elderly)

The older population is a prime target for the Angular Cheilitis virus. Due to the natural progress of age, the immune system diminishes in strength. For this factor alone, the ability to fight diseases becomes more difficult. In addition, the elderly are generally the ones who use dentures and are at greater risk from suffering from the disease.

Category Number 4 (Infants and Children)

This may come as a shocker to you, but children and infants are highly prone to contract Angular Cheilitis. Due to their age, they are quite sensitive to bacteria and fungi, so they can easily become victims of this condition. To prevent the damages Cheilitis causes, make sure your little one has a balanced diet and lip balm that they can use in cold weather.

Cleaning Tips For A Spic-N-Span Boat

Living in Florida I’ve been around boaters all of my life. One of the most common complaints that I hear from boat owners is that they spend a lot of money on cleaning products that ultimately breakdown the original finish on gel coat or vinyl upholstery. I believe that the one most important step to properly cleaning your boat is to use the right products. Save time and money by doing it right the first time and protect the environment at the same time.

Here are tips that I live by:

Cleaning Supplies

1. Choose cleaning brushes that are sturdy and will get rid of stubborn dirt, grime and salt, without damaging the finish. For most situations, a brush with a medium-soft bristle will do just fine.

2. A long, sturdy handle on a scrub brush will allow you to reach those hard-to-clean areas and eliminates the strain on your back and arms.

3. While you don’t want to break the bank on your cleaning brush, make sure it can withstand repeated use, sun exposure, cleaning agents and salt water.

4. A bucket for your cleaning solutions that is big enough for your brush.

5. If you use a mop, sponges, cloths or towels, store them all in your bucket so you won’t have to search for them at every use.

6. Marine grade products can be conveniently found online and in larger containers than at your local super store. Save on shipping costs by ordering everything you need at once.

Cleaning Products

1. Select a soap that will be tough on dirt, grime, salt, sunscreen products and possibly fish blood, yet easy on the environment.

2. Never use the same soap you would use for cleaning your dishes at home.

3. Use a biodegradable cleaning agent with a neutral pH factor.

4. Always use a fresh water supply, never use water from the river, ocean or lake in your cleaning solution.

5. Follow the instructions on your cleaning products regarding dilution and general usage. Certain concentrated detergents may not be suitable for your boat as these cleaners can strip away and damage finishes when left on for extended periods of time.

Prep Your Cleaning Area

1. Before you start cleaning you’ll need to rinse the entire boat off completely.

2. If you plan to clean your upholstery, wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove all of the surface dirt and salt. Rinse your cloth often to keep from spreading the dirt and grime you’re picking up.

3. Wipe down your glass with a damp cloth to remove the surface dirt and salt. This will also keep your cloth used to clean your glass clean and allow for a streak free shine.

Clean from the Top Down

1. Start from the top and work your way down, one section at a time.

2. Work with small sections and rinse each section completely before moving on to the next.

3. Lather up with a sponge soaked in the soapy solution, scrub, and rinse.

4. Your medium-soft brush can be used for those hard to clean non-skid surfaces. Lather your brush with plenty of suds and it will clean between the grooves without much muscle.

5. Use the same cleaning solution you use for your hull to clean the deck. You can come back with a stronger cleaning agent if you have really tough stains to remove.

6. If you have an outboard don’t forget to lather up and rinse off the motor, lower drive unit and prop area where corrosive salt and dirt tends to accumulate.

7. Once the entire area is cleaned use a soft drying cloth to soak up the water. Chamois cloths or drying mops made of chamois material are good choices as they are highly absorbent and will soak up the water without stripping or scratching.

Glass Cleaning

1. A simple solution of water and vinegar works well as a glass cleanser, and it’s easy on the environment.

2. Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth or paper towel to guard against damage to your glass.

Vinyl Upholstery Cleaning

1. Regular cleaning of your upholstery will prevent dirt and grime from settling into the upholstery. Use your simple solution of water and vinegar to wipe off the upholstery before and after each use.

2. If you have stains and hard to remove grime on your upholstery, use your medium-soft brush and a cleaner designed for boat upholstery. I find that a liquid concentrated cleaner mixed with water allows you to soap up the area and the brush tends to reach that deep down dirt and grime.

3. If mildew stains have formed on your vinyl upholstery, use a deck brush with a medium-soft bristle and scrub with a water and ammonia mixture (4 parts water to 1 part ammonia). Rinse with fresh water, dry and repeat this process if necessary.

4. For tougher mildew cases, several effective commercial or marine stain removers are appropriate for use on vinyl upholstery.

Cleaning your Carpeting

1. Vacuum and spot clean your carpet often to remove dust and dirt that could buildup and settling deep down in the carpet.

2. If the carpet is removable, remove the carpet and place it on a flat surface for cleaning. Use a carpet or steam cleaner to clean the entire area. Leave to air dry.

3. If the carpet is stained or soiled, use a quality stain remover, then repeat the carpet or steam cleaner process.

Caring for Your Teak

1. Regular care of your teak will be required to maintain the original rich color and protect the wood.

2. If your teak has already lost its luster, you can use a teak cleaner to remove the oxidation, oil, fish stains, spills and varnishes.

3. Allow the teak to weather naturally to a silver grey or apply a teak oil or teak sealer for longer lasting protection.

Shining Chrome and Stainless Steel

1. There are many quality cleaners and sealants available for keeping the chrome and stainless steel on your boat protected, shiny and bright. After applying a light film allow it to sit for about 15 to 30 minutes. Then, wipe it off with a clean cloth.

2. After cleaning, you may also want to apply a quality wax sealer/protector to create a protective barrier against the harsh elements.

3. If your metalwork is already pitted or oxidized, apply a quality metal was and leave it on the problem area overnight. In the morning, take a piece of fine bronze wool and gently scrub off the wax. You may need to repeat this process several times.

A Repentant Believer’s Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You came to live life as a human, You taught and served and healed, and died a sinless man for sinners like me.

You did not deserve the kind of death You died, but Your death to save humankind was foretold, and death didn’t stop You. You rose again, and after forty days ascended to be with the Father once more.

When the fiftieth day came, You sent the Spirit, so every true believer could be baptised in You.

And this:

the Lamb that was slain,

deserve the reward of Your suffering,

and that is my life for You.

I’m going to obey You and love You and serve You and do what You want me to do, all the days of my life, even if I go to hell when I die, and even if I suffer in this life, simply because You’re worthy to be loved and obeyed and served. And because I’m not trying to make a deal with You. I trust You regarding my worldly and eternal destinies.

I want to live for You in such a way that the desires of my heart align with Your will, by putting Your Kingdom and Your Righteousness first in my life. I understand this isn’t always easy, so I ask You now to give me the heart of flesh to replace the heart of stone I’ve had until now in areas of my life.

May worship be my means, justice be my measure, mercy be my modality, and humility be my method.

Grant me the wisdom to love and to serve and to honour You, the serenity of peace as the assurance of my way with You, and courage when life is hard, when fear berates and shakes my being.

May my allegiance to You always overcome the temptations of the world, my flesh, and the wiles of Satan. May You attain the reward of Your suffering for me through my earthly life. And may I live a life according to Your Beatitudes, honouring all Your core teaching. Finally, may You always help me pour contempt on my pride so I can walk humbly these remaining days You give me on this earth.

Yours, always, a living sacrifice, for Your sake,

Keeping the Bathroom Sink Clean From Toothpaste Stains

I don’t know about you, but my kids seem to leave more toothpaste on the sink than in their mouths and toothbrushes when they are brushing their teeth. If this is like you, read on to see my tips for keeping the bathroom sink clean from toothpaste stains.

1. Buy white colored toothpaste, so stains don’t set in as quickly.

So, your kids want the pretty colored and flavored toothpaste to brush their teeth with? Tell them to first make sure they are more careful about getting it all over the sink before they get the colored stuff again.

2. Wipe the sink clean in both the morning and the evening, very quickly, everyday.

I am not talking about a scrub marathon session here, but instead just a quick wipe down. If you time these wipe downs to wait until after everyone has brushed their teeth the toothpaste left in the sink will still be fresh and will easily wipe away with a little water and rubbing with your finger. If you let it sit, and dry, you have to scrub a whole lot harder to get that toothpaste off.

The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to just make sure I am the last person in the house to brush their teeth. When I am done I just wipe out the sink, and it takes maybe 10 seconds of my time.

Better yet, teach your kids as part of their brushing their tooth routine to wipe out the sink after they spit and rinse out their mouth, and to place the cap back on the toothpaste so it doesn’t accidentally squirt out when something gets laid on it.

3. Re-moisten dried on toothpaste to make it easier to remove.

For that really dried on toothpaste that somehow got overlooked in your daily wiping sessions the best thing to do is re-moisten it, to make it easier to remove. There are several ways to do this, which include spraying or sprinkling it with water from the tap, or laying a moist paper towel over the dried toothpaste to really get it soaked.

Once the toothpaste is moist again it is generally pretty easy to wipe it off the bathroom sink, just like fresh toothpaste. If a little is still dried on and hard to remove take a gentle sponge scrubber or an old toothbrush and gently wipe away the dried toothpaste until your bathroom sink is shining again.

4. If a stain has developed from the toothpaste itself try a cleaning poultice.

If a colored toothpaste glob has sat on your bathroom sink so long that a colored stain has developed, and even after the toothpaste itself has been removed the color remains more drastic action needs to occur.

I suggest using a cleaning poultice made of baking soda and water, spreading it over the stained area, and then covering it with plastic wrap so the paste doesn’t dry out too quickly. Leave it overnight and then remove the plastic wrap and wipe away the paste, and hopefully the toothpaste stain too.

If this does not work you can also try a cleaning poultice with hydrogen peroxide, but be careful because it may damage your bathroom sink, so I would only do this as a last resort. Also, after approximately 10 minutes, you should check the sink to make sure the hydrogen peroxide poultice is not harming your sink, and again every hour or so for a couple of hours, until you are assured the hydrogen peroxide is not harming anything. If it does seem to hurt your sink remove the poultice immediately, rinse thoroughly with water, and either give up on the stain, or call in a professional.

BGA Rework – The Process of Reflow

BGA Rework Reflow

One of the most critical processes for BGA rework is the process of reflow. The reflow process occurs after the previous device has been removed and the site prepped. The replacement device is replaced using either flux or paste attachment. The reflow process in BGA rework should emulate the manufacturing process as closely as possible. Given the thermal mass of the board in and around the BGA the profile should match that of the replacement solder balls (if the device has been reballed and will be used a the replacement device) or match as closely as possible the profile of the device vendor’s data sheet of the solder paste printed.

There are several “rules of thumb” when zeroing in the process of reflow profile. It is good to learn about the thermal characteristics of the PCB when trying to dial in a reflow process profile. One of the best ways to “learn” about the thermal characteristics of the PCB when there is only one PCB and there is not a profiling board available, is to use what is learned during the removal process to help “dial in” a reflow process. Many times a BGA rework technician will use a standard profile in order to remove the device, tweaking or adjusting the profile based on the results achieved. If there is the availability of a solder sample which allows the BGA technician to embed thermocouples into the solder balls (a corner, and 1 or 2 other places depending on the size of the package), into the die, around the BGA, near other components etc. all in conjunction with learning about the thermal characteristics of the device and board during the reflow process. The proper method for embedding these thermocouples is high-temperature epoxy for their attachment to the device or internal to the PCB. Another “rule of thumb” for the reflow profile is making sure that for lead-free profiles the solder joint, as seen by the temperature in both corner and other balls, is above liquidus for a period of 60-90 seconds. Tin-lead solder should be above liquidus for a period of 30-45 seconds.

Not only should the profile be correct and be confirmed through temperature measurements but the components in and around the BGA being reflowed need to be protected. This is especially tried when using a hot air source and for the device which is heat-sensitive including but not limited to ceramic capacitors, plastic connectors, batteries, and MELFs. In addition devices with underfill or components with TRV or glue around them should be watched and protected as these materials will become soft and potentially run all of the board making a large mess. Protection from the heat sources, especially when using a hot air reflow source comes in many different flavors. One of the most common-used but least-effective types of protection used is the Kapton™ tape found in many areas of the SMT process. This has been shown in several studies on this topic to be LEASE effective type of heat shielding material. Other more effective sources include a water-soluble gel or a ceramic-based nonwoven material. Whatever the type of heat shielding material used to protect neighboring devices during reflow, their use is important to protecting devices from excessive heat which damage the devices.

In order to run a complete profile, the PCB should be adequately supported. This is especially true of there are “imbalanced” copper section of the board or in cases where very thin.032″ thick boards are being reflowed. Without adequate board support, there may be board warping which may damage inner layers or cause the board to be badly deformed making placement of components difficult or have a reliability problem with respect to the solder joints. There are a variety of board support systems on the market with most higher end rework systems offering a flexible board mounting and support system design.

Not only is adequate board support required but proper bottom side heating of the boards will help ensure minimal differences in temperature across the board and a lesser propensity for board warpage. Modern BGA rework systems are equipped with sophisticated bottom side heaters. Advancements for making sure the process of reflow is optimized include multizone bottom side heaters. These heaters allow the user to have the rework area at a higher temperature than the remainder of the PCB thereby reducing the likelihood of board warpage during the process of reflow.

A typical lead-free, hot air source thermal profile is seen below. First, the bottom side heating begins to warm up the board with one temperature (typically 160 or 170C) being in the rework location and another, typically 150 C, being at other areas of the board. During the time this temperature is applied to the bottom side of the board the nozzle temperature begins to climb during the “ramp” period of the reflow profile. Too fast a ramp may damage neighboring components or the laminate. Then a “soak” phase, which lowers the ramp rate and starts to activate the flux, begins. After this phase, the liquidus temperature, somewhere between 205-220C is reached. This begins the reflow zone. In this, the maximum temperature is reached and the rework location “sees” a temperature which is above the liquidus temperature for a minimum of 60 and as long as 90 seconds. The reflow profile ends with a cool down zone. The cool down zone cannot be so extreme so as to cool the board where the negative temperature gradient may cause brittleness in the solder joint at the end of the process of reflow.

The Finest Bee Stuff When Harvesting Honey

In order to carry out a beekeeping business successfully, there are certain that you need to purchase. Bee stuff may refer to bee equipments that are needed in the business. You will need these things to harvest honey easily or protect yourself from the bee stains. Actually, these are must-have bee stuff for a beekeeper to perform his duties smoothly.

Since a beehive is where the colony of bees live and a nest where you can harvest honey, and also a place where you might get stung by the bees, you there before need some protective bee stuff to defend yourself and to carry out your beekeeping venture more fruitful. However, besides the protective stuffs, the rest bee stuff is used for harvesting honey. In this article, let's talk some of these bee stuffs regarding their uses and why a beekeeper must have them.

Are your beehives already full of honey and ready to harvest? Then you will need a hook. This is a handy that is used for removing frames. You can make use of this tool with one hand only and and without the need to enter your hands inside the hive. This stuff is made of metal or stainless steel. The curved end of this hook is used to hold the frame.

This bee stuff is used to complement the hook. It is actually the half part of the hook. After removing the frames of the hive, you will need to get the honey by shredding it. You can do this by scrapping the honey away from the frames with the use of the scraper and the hook.

Frame spacer

This bee stuff is a wooden piece that is used to separate the frames from the other. These are small cubes of wood to hold the frames in the precise position. The purpose of these frame spacers is to prevent the frames from sticking together.

Smoke box

This is one of the most vital bee equipments that any beekeeper should have. When you are working on the hive, smoke box is very useful for safety measure. When bees are being smoked, they are hampered from becoming aggressive allowing the beekeeper to easily harvest the honey. This is also an effective tool to avoid being stung.

So when you find yourself planning to start a beekeeping business, do not forget these bee stuffs. You will definitely need them for beekeeping success!

Flat Pack Kitchens

Flat pack kitchens make kitchen renovation easy and cheap. It means avoiding having have builders clambering around inside your home (which is nice although they may be certainly be unsettling if you do not get on or if you have lots of valuables lying around and you do not know them), it means you do not need to spend loads on subcontractors, and it means you can go at a pace that suits you. It also means that the kitchen is entirely your making and your design – you do not have to simply sit back and trust them to make your kitchen exactly the way you want it right; and you get to enjoy the smug satisfaction of having completed it. You get to say – 'I built that'. Tomorrowmore you will spend less on the actual furniture itself as you buy directly from the source without a middle man. Take matters into your own hands and you can save money and oversee every aspect of the kitchen's inception.

However at the same time this means a lot more pressure on the person building the kitchen. You need to plan in advance for a lot of things and if you get it wrong you will have only yourself to blame. Here's how to ensure that your new kitchen ends up just how you want it.

Firstly the planning. You need to ensure that you can remove all the items, cabinets and utilities from your kitchen that you do not want there anymore or you will not be able to fit your new things in. You also need to then measure the kitchen and the items to make sure everything will fit into place (you will be able to find the measurements for the flat pack kitchens on the website or on the box). Then arrange in your mind how you want the cabinets etc to sit to ensure they will all fit together – it's always a good idea to leave a little extra room just in case and to look for pipes and windows that might jut out and mean you ' re unable to use the space along one wall. Drawing a plan of your kitchen before you purchase the parts can also be a good idea and you should do this to scale to ensure you will not be disappointed. By following these instructions you should be able to assemble your parts with space to spare at the end.

When designing your kitchen you will also have more free reign, so you need to ensure that you include everything you need and have space and surfaces to work with when cooking etc. There are some basic kitchen designs and you should find the layout that suits you best before you begin. For example you might want the 'L shape' design with surfaces down one long wall and one end wall, or a 'corridor' layout which like it sounds consists of two opposite surfaces. The 'island' layout meanwhile features one central cabinet / work surface on which to work that can be reached from any point in the kitchen. Do your research and choose the best layout for you before you begin to assemble your flat pack kitchen.

Balanced Flue Fires – Convenient Gas Fires

Balanced flue fires are the answer to a more comfortable use of fireplaces in homes. Have you ever visited a home where you actually found it hard to get some fresh air? Or could it be happening right now with you? Sometimes people hardly notice the change that has happened. They find it hard to point to the very cause why, all of a sudden a home that was enjoying some freshness now longs for some. It is important to note some things about fireplaces and to note how balanced flues come to aid the situation.

You need to understand this part so you appreciate balanced flue fires. To start with, you can check out your conventional gas fires so you follow up easily with what I am about to say. These conservative gas fires do come with open-faced fireplaces inserted into a normal sized chimney. The problem here is that the air the fire uses in making flames is sucked from inside your home, while the waste matters are cast off up the chimney. As the sucking of air from your room continues, over time your living room will start having problems with ventilation.

Despite the fact that you may actually like the fire, you can see here that it is taking more than you ever bargained for. The system requires constant ventilation process to keep the fire up. In so doing, it is taking more from your finances as it continues to consume more fuel and energy. The solution is nothing other than having a balanced flue fire. Now, let us see the description of this type of fire.

Unlike conventional fires, a balanced flue gas fire is sealed from taking air from the house. Rather, it makes use of convection to get enough air for combustion from outside your home. In addition, when the air is used up, the wastes follow another channel outside your home. There is no loss of your highly prized comfort. Secondly, you will be saving money you would have been spending trying to match the level of comfort.

Now, with a balanced flue fire you have no need for ventilation. This simply means that you will have to be saving than spending more on your fireplace. They do not pose any health risk to you or your family members. You can get modern balanced flue gas fires that come with exhaust fin and double skin. You now see the need to have this type of fire in your home. With it there is no longer, worries and you do not need to flex your financial muscles. You can now enjoy some fresh air at home without having to sweat it out.

Pick Up Lines For the Bus

Ever wondered how many good looking girls there are in the bus? And how few you have actually talked to over the years? Try this seriously funny ice breaker and you could actually start ranking the bus next to night clubs over places you seriously want to meet women!

You’re in the bus and see a girl listening to her iPod or mp3 player of some sort. You sit right in front of her and wait for her to look at you. When she does, you start acting like you’re talking to her, going blablablabla without actually talking. She will say “sorry, i cant hear you”. And then, this is it, you keep “speaking without saying anything”. She’ll laugh for sure, if you’re not looking too serious.

You can say “so, what are you listening to?”

Whatever she says you can follow up with: “Oh, I was pretty sure you’d be listening to some other kind of music just by looking at your clothes”. She’ll say: “oh, really?”

And you go: “Death metal, 100%”.

And then you put on a big smile and laugh. She will return it!

The trick obviously is to keep it cool. Before the smile part, just try to look super serious. Especially when she takes of the ear phones – if you can continue bla bla-ing here and NOT smiling or laughing, then you come across as funny. Finish it off with commenting on her style in a way that she just respond to – and you’re on!

Industrial Cooling Towers to Match Today’s Industrial Needs

Industrial cooling towers are the heart of any industrial process that requires cooling as a course of action. Cooling may be an important part of the industrial process so that a given product can be manufactured. It can also happen that the industrial installation or the manufacturing area requires cooling so that the manufacturing process can go on smoothly.

For this reason, these towers have become a necessity rather than a luxury in various industries. These towers have basically evolved from commercial towers and specially modified for various industrial processes. The basis of functioning of these towers, whether industrial or commercial is very simple to understand. They work on the principle of evaporative cooling, as part of which water is brought into contact with ambient air. This causes partial evaporation of the water and results in cooling.

Various industrial units require cooling for their daily and smooth operation. These include industries like electricity generation, petroleum refining, chemical processing, sugar manufacturing, air condition and refrigeration, steel generation, and many others. Industrial cooling has been around for many years. The first need of industrial cooling arose during the initial years of the industrial revolution. Since they were successful in removing the heat from the industrial processes, their use grew in more and more industries.

Depending upon their use, these towers are classified as commercial or industrial. Some of these towers involved especially in the petroleum and power industries use large capacities of water for cooling purposes – some of these giant towers use anywhere between 80,000 and 100,000 cubic meters of water per hour for their cooling needs.

Most industrial towers utilize air to cool the flow of water in them. Generally, based on this arrangement, they can be categorized as natural draft or mechanical draft, which include induced draft and forced draft towers. Natural draft towers utilize the tendency of warm air to rise and cold air to descend to induce cooling. Induced draft towers utilize motors and fans at the air exit of the cooling tower to draw air through the cooling tower. Finally, forced draft towers use fans at the point of air intake in the cooling tower to push air through the tower.

Also, depending upon how the air is directed towards the water flow, two types of towers are in existence. The first involves counter flow type cooling tower, wherein the air flow is directed upwards the fill while the water flows down the fill. Cross flow towers direct the air flow perpendicular to the water flow. Depending upon the requirements, industrial cooling towers can be of various shapes, such as box or bottle shaped towers or even rectangular in shape.

If the quality of water is not maintained properly in these towers, it can cause the formation of several types of bacteria and algae in the water. Therefore, maintaining the cooling tower regularly is very essential. Badly maintained towers can cause a disease called Legionnaires’ disease. However, proper water treatment in industrial cooling towers can prevent the development of this disease.

BTEC Level 3 Engineering Qualifications: 3 Major Challenges for Learners

September 2016 saw the launch of new BTEC Level 3 Nationals qualifications in Engineering and the majority of students registered with the awarding body from September 2017 would have been enrolled onto these new style qualifications.

The new BTECs contain externally assessed units. This means that learners studying a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering from September 2017 will more than likely be required to take an exam. This exam will be used to assess a core unit, Engineering Principles (Unit 1).

As this is a mandatory component of the new BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Engineering, it is not something that can be avoided.

In an earlier article, I outlined the challenges faced by Schools and Colleges responsible for delivering this unit, but today we are going to be looking at this from the learner’s perspective.

Challenge 1: Preferred Assessment Methods

Students of vocational qualifications often prefer to be assessed with assignments, avoiding the need to sit exams. Having spoken to BTEC students about exams, I know that the vast majority would rather avoid them entirely!

There may be a number of reasons for this. For example, the learner may not feel that they can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding most effectively when placed in the exam environment. It may be because in an exam, you only have one opportunity, on one given day, whereas you have more time to think about and work on assignments. Or it may be because there is a greater likelihood of failing an exam, with additional pressures of potential retakes.

Whatever the reason, most BTEC Level 3 Nationals students will be required to sit an exam for a relatively large and technical unit, which is something that may place them under additional pressure.

Challenge 2: Volume of Content

The second major challenge arises because of the volume of content in the Engineering Principles unit, all of which could potentially be assessed in the exam. The unit covers applied Mathematics, as well as fundamental Mechanical and Electrical / Electronic principles.

The unit accounts for 120 hours of a 720-hour National Diploma qualification. What this means in practical terms is that this single unit accounts for almost 20% of the overall qualification. Unlike with other units in the qualification, the learner will not be able to accrue pass criteria as they progress through the unit. They will need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all of that content in the final exam.

Not only that, as there are only two opportunities to sit the examination, learners must be able to recall information that was covered at the start of the unit. This content may have been delivered up to 40 weeks before the final exam!

Challenge 3: Technical Nature of Content

As mentioned above, this unit covers applied Mathematics, as well as fundamental Mechanical and Electrical / Electronic principles. Most learners naturally prefer either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and generally are more capable in one or other of the disciplines. This unit requires students to learn and be able to apply principles from both Engineering disciplines.

Students who favour Mechanical Engineering will need to work at the same pace as their peers when covering Electrical content and vice versa for students who favour Electrical Engineering. There may not be sufficient time in the academic year to ensure that all learners understand all of the topics in the unit specification.

A Solution for Proactive Learners

Performance in this unit alone, could have a huge impact on the final grades achieved by students on these programmes. Most students will accept the need to sit an examination and will want to prepare as best as they can. Learners should be encouraged to identify their own strengths and areas for improvement in this unit, as this will enable them to work on their weaknesses to develop their understanding and hence, improve their overall grade.

It is also important to note that revision (particularly in areas identified as requiring improvement) is essential in order to perform well in this type of assessment. The difficulty is that not all learners will have the same areas for improvement, so this will need to be done independently and outside of the classroom.

For these reasons, online courses may provide a solution. some online courses contain video tutorials and self-assessment practice questions, where coding is used to ensure that repeated sets or practice questions differ from earlier attempts. This encourages a greater level of understanding, rather than memorising solutions.

The Fish We Cook, Arctic Char and Greenling

The arctic char is a member of the salmon family that is found in cold arctic waters and in some deep mountain lakes in Canada and Europe. They have many similarities with their cousins the salmon and the trout. Like the salmon they are born in freshwater and then they migrate to the sea. They return to freshwater at maturity to breed and unlike the salmon, after breeding they do not die, but they return to the sea. There are also some that are landlocked and spend their entire life in fresh water. The market size for arctic char is usually between two and four pounds but they can reach as much as 30 pounds. They are fished commercially and by sportsmen but the majority on the market in the United States have been raised in fish farms throughout Canada and Iceland. Its meat has a firm texture which ranges from pink to dark red and is rich in flavor and somewhat high in fat. It has a taste similar to trout and salmon but many think it is not quite as rich as salmon. The best way to cook arctic char is to bake, broil, grill, and sauté or poach.

A family of fish from the Pacific Ocean, greenling is sometimes referred to as rock trout or tommy cod and are commercially known as sea-trout. Their average size is from 2 to 4 pounds and about 21 inches in length but the ling cod, which is a member of the greenling family, can grow to 5 feet and over 80 pounds. The ling cod and the kelp greenling are the two most popular on the market. They are found in shallow coastal waters of the Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California and range in color from brown to blue or green with a lighter belly and have the ability to change color according to their surroundings. The males generally are brighter in color than the females. The greenling is a good eating fish and is of importance to the fishing industry. The kelp greenling is of importance to sport fishing but not as much for commercial fishing. They have a delicate flavor and are low in fat. Their very flaky, firm flesh is very mild in flavor and remains moist after cooking. The best way to prepare greenling is to sauté, pan fry, broil, deep fry, oven fry, poach or steam.

Advantages of Chain Link Fences

The purpose of fences is to provide security and demarcate a property area but before installing a fence you need to consider some factors that will demand your attention later if not considered prior to selecting an appropriate design. Every fence has a different purpose and advantages depending on suitability, budget and other factors as explained below.

Chain link fencing is a common near-ornamental design for commercial and residential fences. It is made of coated steel wire with an interlocked design that makes it cat proof too. Usually cats are the most flexible animals to enter even through the narrow barred fences.

  • Cost Effective: The biggest advantage of chain link fence design is that it is cost effective and reliable when it comes to security and maintenance. This design allows you to have gates too so, that saves you additional expense.
  • Customized Designs: What better than customizable wire meshes design with options of varied wire thickness and color variety too to suit your exterior décor too? So, depending on whether you run a preschool nursery, you can opt for a bright color and thick coated chain fence.
  • Quick Installation: Most commercial properties choose this fence design because they are really fast and easy to install, be it at whatever height and for how much ever big area. The interwoven wire or mesh wire is actually rolled and one just has to unroll it for installing it while fastening.
  • No Maintenance: Install chain link fence if you don’t want any maintenance issues apart from may be just pruning off the small creepers growing off the lawn on and off! You don’t need to worry about painting or cleaning it either. The best part of this fence type is that it is coated for dealing with oxidation reactions.
  • No Light Obstruction: Imagine having a secured fence and yet no requirement of putting extra lights around the property. By virtue of its design and material, the chain fence provides full visibility and no light obstruction.
  • Trespassing: This is a punishable yet common offence and often difficult to penalize. Why take the trouble to catch someone red hand while trespassing your property for plucking flowers in your beautiful garden? Instead, simply contact the fence installation service and deal with it easily.
  • Pet Containment: Do you like your dog being chased by strangers passing by and troubled by the neighborhood kids? Well, you need a chain link fence to evade these pet issues. The wired mesh design provides visibility (you and your dog can see what’s happening outside) and security too.

These points surely make chain link fence design a viable option for your commercial or residential property when compared with the costlier counterparts like wood or vinyl fences but the purpose of the latter is different altogether, for example, beautifying and adding a classy tough. So, if beautifying is not your motive, choose the thickness and color of the wire properly to match it with your external space.
