The same effect is achieved by diagonally arranging floor tiles when installing it instead of laying it in such a way that it's parallel to the walls. Each different kitchen style has a suitable type of flooring that would look good on it.

The Fundamental Elements of Wind Turbines

Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy platform in the world. Ah, but just how do wind turbines work. Well, you have to understand the key components.

At its core, a wind turbine combines the energy in wind into usable electricity. Wind, of course, is a form of solar energy. As the sun heats surfaces at different rates, hot air rises and cooler air rushes in to fill the gap. This rushing process is wind. A turbine located in the appropriate area catches this wind.

As you may imagine, the first key component of the wind turbine is the blade. In modern horizontal turbines, there are usually three blades. The blades are often made of a plastic and fiberglass composite, but some are still wood. The blades are concave, but off center to catch the wind and spin efficiently.

The blades are connected to a double rotor assembly. The blade rotor is connected to the blades and spins as they catch wind. The blade rotor is then connected to a magnet rotor through a pulley assembly on larger turbines or directly on smaller ones for homes.

The magnet rotor does not turn anything. Instead, it spins around a magnetic alternator. This creates a magnetic field. As it passes over the wires of the alternator, an electrical charge is created. The electrical charge is then fed to a controller that converts the untamed electricity to usable DC power.

To maximize energy production, the turbine platform is fairly sophisticated. The turbine is not stationary at the top of the supporting pole. Instead, it sits on a bearing that allows the turbine to rotate towards the direction of the wind. This obviously makes it much more efficient.

To make sure the rotation is done correctly, all horizontal turbines come with a tail. Often called a boom or vane, the tail looks like something you would find on a model airplane. It is a pole out the rear of the turbine. At the end is a flat, vertical surface. This surface automatically turns towards the wind, which causes the blades on the other end of the turbine to do so also.

To the surprise of many, wind turbines are also built with a breaking system. Why brakes? Well, you may need to work on the turbine or turn it off if very high winds are expected. The brakes are often electric in nature. The essentially break the current being fed from the turbine. They are not a way of stopping the blades from turning.

Wind power is growing in popularity and is providing to be a valuable energy source. This is particularly true for rural or underdeveloped areas. The next time you see a wind turbine, you can tell the people with you exactly how it works.

Carpentry in Building

One thing that has always interested me was the different way buildings, especially home buildings, are done. For instance in the USA it looks most houses are built out of wood, whereas in my home country South Africa it is the absolute exception.

Possible Reasons

The reason may be the availability of the main materials. The USA as well as Canada have large indigenous forests. In South Africa (SA) there are few indigenous forests and these are protected so that very little lumber may be taken from them and the lumber that can be used is too precious and only used for expensive furniture.

SA has planted forests in the wetter parts of the country, mainly in the east where the rainy is higher. These are single species forests and the lumber used for building comes mainly from pine. The species are pinus patula, a native of Mexico and pinus radiata, mainly a native of California, but also pinus taeda and pinus elliotti. These grow very quickly, due to the heat in SA, so the growth rings are far apart when compared to lumber in the USA. This results in wood that is not of a high quality and is very soft. It also tends to warp badly, so care has to be taken when it is discharged. The lumber is harvested within only 20 to 30 years in contrast to 45 years in the USA

Building Methods

The houses built from lumber in the USA have wooden frames with wooden cladding and sometimes even the roof shingles are wood. This would be unthinkable in SA as the sun would damage these in a short time if made out of these soft woods. Another factor is the plague of termites which attack any wooden structure without it is specifically treated.

Houses built in SA are built with bricks, either burnt clay bricks or cement and crusher sand hollow bricks. The last named are mainly used for low-cost buildings for the poor. For the roof structure lumber is used, with either clay or cement tiles for the more up-market houses, or galvanized iron sheeting, which is by far the most common. Sometimes shingles made from slate are used but are not popular. Pressed metal tiles such as Harvey tiles are also used, although these are quite expensive. The floors are concrete with a variety of coverings such as tiles, laminated wooden flooring, carpeting or even colored cement floated screed depending on whether it is an up-market building or not.

Thatched roofs are used sometimes but they are risky because of the danger of lightning. They have much higher insurance costs. In coastal areas this risk is less, so more homes have these roofs there, especially in the Cape where the old gabled Cape-Dutch houses originated.

Other Building Methods

For high-rise buildings concrete frames with brick walls and concrete rooftops are common here. The use of steel framing is used in contrast to the USA.

The black (Bantu) population in traditional areas use natural wood framing from branches and small trees cut in the bush combined with mud daub and thatched roofs. These huts are very maintenance intensive and it is the task of the women to regularly smear them with mud clay. The floors are made out of a mixture of mud clay and cow dung.

The brown (Khoi-San) people, who were the original residents of SA, built their traditional dome houses with thin branches covered with hides, because because they used to be nomadic. This is strictly used anymore, only in some desert areas in the North Western part of SA.

Other countries have very different building methods, but this article concentrates on the differences between South Africa and the USA and demonstrates how the availability of materials can affect building methods, not to mention other natural occurrences such as earth quakes.

How to Take Care of Your Art Materials

Your art materials are the base for your artwork. So why risk your creativity by neglecting your art supplies? It is easy to take care of your art materials. All you have to do is follow some simple steps mentioned below:

Make a Workspace

A workspace will enable you to work more effectively on your art projects. Since you get a separate area to draw and paint, you can focus more on your art work. Secondly, you do not need to search for your art supplies all around your house because they must be in your workspace only.

Another benefit of having a workspace is that kids will not have access to your painting materials. So, you will have minimum chances of misplacing them.

Plan Your Palette

Plan the colors you will be using in advance. Organize the colors in your palette accordingly. This will help you get necessary materials easily while you paint. When you select only the required colors, you can easily get rid of clutter made from using a lot of painting materials. As a result, you will be able to organize your paints and paint brushes properly.

Keep Water Away From Your Work

Since a canvas is also an art material, you should be aware of how to take care of it. If you are using water cups while painting, make sure that you keep those away from your canvas. This is important so that you do not accidentally throw the water on your art work. The more you take care of it, the better it is.

Clean Your Paint Brushes

Paint brushes require extensive care because its bristles can be damaged easily if you do not clean them properly. Cleaning paint brushes too often enhances their durability. Therefore, do not forget to clean your paint brushes as soon as you have completed your painting.

If you have used water colors in your painting, you can clean the paint brushes with water only. However, you have to clean them with thinners if you have made an oil painting. At the end, make sure that you dry your paint brushes to maintain the quality of bristles.

Store Art Supplies Separately

There are different types of boxes that are specifically designed to store materials of artwork. You can buy these boxes to store paint tubes, pastel chalks, and colored pencils in separate compartments. It will help you get access to these materials whenever you need them for your art work.

Face painting isn’t just for kids – adults love face painting too! St. Patricks day is a perfect time to learn face painting for yourself, your friends, and your kids. There are many designs for St. Patricks Day, and learning how to paint faces is probably easier than you think. You can be painting shamrocks in just one day!

Face painting for St. Patricks Day is perfect for both kids and adults. A shamrock, a leprechaun, a 4-leaf clover, and similar designs are fun for everyone on this Irish holiday. Any type of green design makes for a great design on this holiday.

Getting Started

If you are learning the art of face painting, start with a few simple designs (such as shamrocks) and practice those designs before moving on to more complicated designs. For St. Patricks Day, you must use plenty of green paint – but feel free to use your imagination and add other colors too. For example, you can outline the shamrock in a different color to enhance its appearance. If you are still learning, you might want to consider using a stencil for more complicated designs – such as a leprechaun.

Involve the Adults (and the Kids)

Even if you are new to face painting, give your subjects a choice of designs or colors. Even if they simply choose between a 3-leaf clover and a 4-leaf clover, it gets your subject involved in the fun. If you are only painting your own face, be creative and use your imagination. Remember, face painting is not permanent – you can “erase” your mistakes or just laugh at them and have fun. Be sure to have plenty of green paint on hand if you are painting several faces. And, be certain to use paints that are specifically approved for face painting.

Not Just Faces

Don’t limit your painting to faces. Arms, legs, and backs of hands are great places for shamrocks and other designs too. Don’t take your painting too seriously. If you have fun, the adults and kids will have fun too. If you make a mistake, try to “work around” your mistake, or simply re-draw a portion of the image. Pro and Cons – Do It Yourself Versus Professional Carpet Cleaning

Homes, offices … are in constant need for maintenance and cleaning. One of the things to consider is the carpet. When deciding about cleaning the carpet, a person must choose one of two options: to call a professional for the clean-up, or to clean the carpet by him / herself and consider this as enough. Below you will find the difference between the two options, and some tips for a better clean-up whatever your choice is.

One of the first differences that pops up to mind is the cost. Surely, when hiring someone to clean your carpet, you will have to pay them. In contrast, if you do it by yourself you will save money, but at the same time you will get tired. Since spaces in houses, apartments, and offices differ, the money you will have to pay varies depending on the space first, and on the kind of carpet to be cleaned or if you need any additional services. That is why, before deciding, you have to ask yourself is it worth the pay? Is there some stains that really need professional cleaning?

Another difference is the equipment used and time consumed. Whatever you do, you have to accept that you will not have the same result after cleaning as when it is done by a professional, since their equipment would be superior. Even if you decide to rent out a machine, it will still be expensive because you have to purchase the cleaning materials and detergent. You will also have to know which kind of detergent would be suitable for the kind of carpet you have. Also, you clearly have to consider the safety of your family, and not buy something that contains harmful chemicals. On top of that, cleaning the carpet will take time, while professionals can be done with job in one third of the time that you need. If you have the time to spare, then it would be a nice change to try and clean the carpet by yourself.

Choosing whether or not to hire a professional could be a dilemma. However, there are some things that you could do every day that would make cleaning so much easier. For example, putting a rug to clean your shoes before coming in, or if possible take off your shoes, would save your carpet from getting soaked with soil. Vacuuming daily, or every other day, would also help with getting rid of the dust. If you have a pet, you will have to put more effort into cleaning the carpet. In addition, it is good to get rid of any stain immediately so it will not stick. If you want to be more cautious, it is good to hire a professional once a year, or every 18 months, for a full clean-up.

Although taking care of the carpet can be expensive and time consuming, it is something that has to be done. Hiring a professional or trying to do it by yourself both are options with pros and cons.

Writing Tables – Classic Charm Combined With Modern Function

Sure you can pay your bills at the kitchen table, but would not you rather have a nice place to sit and do that or compose a letter to grandma? Writing tables and secretaries are often seen as old and obsolete pieces of furniture, but this simply is not true.

They make great additions to your living room or home office adding a bit of classic grace to your modern lifestyle. It's easy to find a style that suits your needs and matches your décor. You can choose from metal ones for a modern industrial feel or the simple fun of a zebra striped table with gently curling legs. Maybe the classic look of cherry finished wood with ornately carved detail matches your motif or may you prefer the simple sophistication of a white writing table embellished with hand-painted garden flowers.

Shoot For Dreams That Are Too Big in Network Marketing

Two steps can bring you closer to total time and financial freedom in network marketing, or other home based businesses, allowing you to live in the house of your dreams, drive an amazing car and help others in substantial ways. Or it can be a part time income to add a few little extras to your life. Which one looks like your dreams?

A successful business executive called me one day and asked, "What do you think North Americans dream about most? What do they want in life?" I had talked to hundreds of people about their dreams, and I answered, "Most of them have stopped dreaming.

That was a sad thought. As my husband and I coach new Associates entering the network marketing industry, we've seen how people who dare to dream outside their comfort zones, outside their present incomes, outside what their friends and family have, are the ones who will rise to the highest levels in their chosen companies.

It's important to help new Associates open their minds wide to new possibilities and freedom in their lives. Give everyone permission to dream big.

1. Have them write down twenty things they'd like to have, be and do, if money was not a consideration. Remind them that there are no limits whateversoever. Write everything in the present tense.

For example, where in the world would they choose to live? Answer: "I am sitting on the beach outside my beautiful five bedroom home in the Bahamas."

What are the children doing? "The kids are taking tennis lessons right now, and then we're all going sailing."

What car are you driving? Answer: "I love cruising around the island in my red BMW convertible, stopping now and then for a fresh pineapple sundae."

What charity are you supporting? "On my recent trip to Uganda with the Children's Hunger Fund, I helped establish a school in Gulu where people have been in refugee camps for years, without proper school facilities. the kids in Uganda. "

You get the idea. Have you done this yourself laTely? It's a great inspirational activity every six months, to spur you and your team on to greater heights.

2. Have a team party and make dream boards to post in your homes, with photos of your dream cars and estates, the people you care about, the places where you will travel. Provide poster paper, colored pens, glue and lots of picture magazines. Watch the fun they will have as they dream, chat and laugh together.

When you shoot for dreams that are too big, or bigger than you ever thought possible, you will find yourself making more phone calls, meeting with more people in person and online, following up on a regular basis, and taking a leadership role in building your business. You'll notice that there will be more excitement in your voice, as you declare that you will be moving to the Bahamas within three years.

Try it. Shoot for dreams that are too big. Get your team to do the same, and then we'll see you in the Bahamas, or the destination of your dreams.

When Should I Replace My Tires On My Car Or Truck

Many people ask this question and the answer is not as simple as one may think. Replacing your tires according to Government ratings is when your tires have worn down to the wear indicators. What are tire wear indicators you ask? Tire wear indicators are small little bumps in between the tread of the tire used to as a indicator of tire life. However there is more involved then just wear indicators. If you severely drive your vehicle an issue you may want to check for is tire dry rot. This is when a tire dries out an begin to crack do to age or not being used. We see this many times in trailers. When inspecting your tires look for cracks in the tires. A rule of thumb is if you can stick the head of a dime in any crack then the tires are no good. Another thing to look for is irregular tire wear. Irregular tire wear is typically high spots and low spots on the tires. This is most often caused by the vehicle being out of alignment. It is always good to have your alignment checked at least once a year. If you live in rougher terrain where there are pot holes etc. you may want to do it more often. When it comes to alignment many people ask can I keep running the tires after I have my car aligned. The answer is yes as long as the tires have not been worn down to the tire wear indicators, however be advised sometimes once you get an alignment your car may hum or ride rough do to the wear, it will be up to you if you can deal with it or not.

Snow tires or Winter tires are another issue, Many people do not realize that once the winter tires get past the 50% or so life they are no longer considered snow tires. The tread has worn down to far and the transaction is not there. It depends where you live on rather you can still use them or not. I know some people that wear the remaining tread out during the summer. Keep in mind that The Snow tire compound is much different so snow tires wear quickly in the summer time.

When going on a trip another thing you should check for is any punctures or holes. Remember a nail can be in your tire and it may not leak. This can cause you trouble down the road. Many times nails in tires do not leak right away but after driving for some time they work into the tire more or the nail hole gets bigger. It is best to have them fixed when you spot them. When it comes to nails as long as they are small enough enough plugs are fine, when it comes to bigger nails an internal tire patch is often needed. Remember never let anyone patch or plug a tire sidewall, this is completely unsafe and should never be done.

In closing I want to say take the time every couple of weeks or absolutely before a trip to inspect your tires. You can also use a spray bottle mixed with dish soap and water to spray down your tires to look for leaks, while your are at it spray your valve stem as well. Look for leaks around the stem as well is spray the core to make sure that is not leaking. Have a safe drive.

Every naturally flowing or stationary source of water on the Earth contains trace amounts of minerals- like calcium, iron, potassium, sodium, magnesium, and many others. And ever since humans have escaped, most of the water we've drunk has contained these natural trace minerals in it.

We've consumed so much of it, in fact, that many of our life-giving and healing properties involve the use of both water and these trace minerals. They keep our teeth and bones strong, they help improve the absorption of nutrients from food we eat, and they help stabilize the pH level of all the fluids in our body.

One of the dangers of drinking ultra pure water that's been demineralized over the long-run is that it's more acidic than alkaline. By continuing drinking this kind of fluid, your body has to pull minerals from your teeth and bones to neutralize it by producing bicarbonate. Forcing the body to do this too much can make you more vulnerable to mineral deficiencies. Plus, a more acidic environment in your body increases both free radical and cancer cell production.

Now by no means am I condoling drinking water that's not filtered. Ideal ultra pure water systems will remove all the harmful contaminants found in water while keeping all the beneficial and healthy trace minerals in it.

This is something to look out for when browsing for different filtration systems. Not many of them leave these trace minerals in water because they do not use the technology to do so.

The ultra pure water systems we use in our home have been documented and proven to keep all the healthy trace minerals in water while removing over 99% of most harmful contaminants. And for less than $ 100 bucks for either a faucet filter or shower head filter, the price can not be beaten (especially at that kind of quality).

Lactase Enzyme

Introduction:

People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the sugar in milk. As a result, they have diarrhea, gas and bloating after eating or drinking dairy products. The condition, which is also called lactose malabsorption, is usually harmless, but its symptoms can be uncomfortable.

A deficiency of this enzyme produced in your small intestine – is usually responsible for lactose intolerance. Many people have low levels of enzyme but are able to digest milk products without problems. If you’re actually lactose intolerant, though, your lactase deficiency leads to symptoms after you eat dairy foods.

Most people with lactose intolerance can manage the condition without having to give up all dairy foods.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance usually begin 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking foods that contain lactose. Common signs and symptoms include:

• Diarrhea

• Nausea, and sometimes, vomiting

• Abdominal cramps

• Bloating

• Gas

Causes

Lactose intolerance occurs when your small intestine doesn’t produce enough of an enzyme (lactase) to digest milk sugar (lactose).

Normally, lactase turns milk sugar into two simple sugars – glucose and galactose – which are absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestinal lining.

If you’re lactase deficient, lactose in your food moves into the colon instead of being processed and absorbed. In the colon, normal bacteria interact with undigested lactose, causing the signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Types of lactose intolerance:

There are three types of lactose intolerance.

1. Primary lactose disease.

This is the most common type. People who develop primary lactose intolerance start life producing plenty of lactase – a necessity for infants, who get all their nutrition from milk. As children replace milk with other foods, their lactase production normally decreases, but remains high enough to digest the amount of dairy in a typical adult diet.

In primary lactose intolerance, lactase production falls off sharply, making milk products difficult to digest by adulthood. Primary lactose type is genetically determined, occurring in a large proportion of people with African, Asian or Hispanic ancestry. The condition is also common among those of Mediterranean or Southern European descent

2. Secondary lactose type

This form of lactose intolerance occurs when your small intestine decreases lactase production after an illness, injury or surgery involving your small intestine. Among the diseases associated with secondary type are celiac disease, bacterial overgrowth and Crohn’s disease. Treatment of the underlying disorder may restore lactase levels and improve signs and symptoms, though it can take time.

3. Congenital or developmental intolerance

It’s possible, but rare, for babies to be born with disease caused by a complete absence of enzyme activity. This disorder is passed from generation to generation in a pattern of inheritance called autosomal recessive, meaning that both the mother and the father must pass on the same gene variant for a child to be affected.

Risk factors:

Factors that can make you or your child more prone include:

• Increasing age. usually appears in adulthood. The condition is uncommon in babies and young children.

• Ethnicity. most common in people of African, Asian, Hispanic and American Indian descent.

• Premature birth. Infants born prematurely may have reduced levels because the small intestine doesn’t develop lactase-producing cells until late in the third trimester.

• Diseases affecting the small intestine. Small intestine problems that can cause this disease include bacterial overgrowth, celiac disease and Crohn’s disease.

• Certain cancer treatments. If you have received radiation therapy for cancer in your abdomen or have intestinal complications from chemotherapy, you have an increased risk.

Diagnosis:

This gauges your body’s reaction to a liquid that contains high levels. Two hours after drinking the liquid, you’ll undergo blood tests to measure the amount of glucose in your bloodstream. If your glucose level doesn’t rise, it means your body isn’t properly digesting and absorbing the lactose-filled drink.

• Hydrogen breath test.

This test also requires you to drink a liquid that contains high levels. Then your doctor measures the amount of hydrogen in your breath at regular intervals. Normally, very little hydrogen is detectable. However, if your body doesn’t digest the protein, it will ferment in the colon, releasing hydrogen and other gases, which are absorbed by your intestines and eventually exhaled. Larger than normal amounts of exhaled hydrogen measured during a breath test indicate that you aren’t fully digesting and absorbing lactose.

• Stool acidity test.

For infants and children who can’t undergo other tests, a stool acidity test may be used. The fermenting of undigested protein creates lactic acid and other acids that can be detected in a stool sample.

Treatment:

There’s currently no way to boost your body’s production, but you can usually avoid the discomfort of lactose intolerance by:

• Avoiding large servings of milk and other dairy products

• Including small servings of dairy products in your regular meals

• Eating and drinking protein-reduced ice cream and milk

• Drinking regular milk after you add a liquid or powder to it to break down the lactose.

Home remedies:

Maintain good nutrition

Reducing the dairy products doesn’t mean you can’t get enough calcium. Calcium is found in many other foods, such as:

• Broccoli

• Calcium-fortified products, such as breads and juices

• Canned salmon

• Milk substitutes, such as soy milk and rice milk

• Oranges

• Pinto beans

• Rhubarb

• Spinach

Limit dairy products

• Choosing smaller servings of dairy.

Sip small servings of milk – up to 4 ounces (118 milliliters) at a time. The smaller the serving, the less likely it is to cause gastrointestinal problems.

• Saving milk for mealtimes.

Drink milk with other foods. This slows the digestive process and may lessen symptoms.

• Experimenting with an assortment of dairy products.

Not all dairy products have the same amount of protein. For example, hard cheeses, such as Swiss or cheddar, have small amounts of protein and generally cause no symptoms. You may be able to tolerate cultured milk products, such as yogurt, because the bacteria used in the culturing process naturally produce the enzyme that breaks down lactose.

• Buying lactose-free products.

You can find these products at most supermarkets in the refrigerated dairy section.

• Using enzyme tablets or drops.
