Sealer – some prefer to “lock in” the natural look of their cedar furniture and so choose to use a high end sealer.  Sealers are made by many companies and are available at any hardware or big box store.  The sealer will prevent the cedar patio furniture from fading and will slow down the aging process.  Keep in mind though that this aging is often a desired affect of the cedar.  The downside to sealing the cedar furniture is consistent with the drawback to using a stain.  In order to maintain its effectiveness, it must be reapplied every 2-3 years which can be tedious and cumbersome.
  3. Paint – like any wood surface, cedar can be painted with a fine outdoor wood paint.  This is not as common as staining or sealing the furniture because paint will crack and chip, and also drastically alters the appearance of the furniture from its natural state.  Once the paint cracks and chips the entire painted surface must be completely sanded and repainted, sealed, or stained.

Teak is also a very weather resistant and ultra resilient wood due in part to its propensity to secrete a natural teak oil which helps to self condition it and protect against the harsh demands of a wet and/or humid climate.  Many shipbuilders choose teak as a main wood for the decks of their ships for this very reason.  Many sunken ships have been raised from the depths of the ocean only to show the teak beautifully preserved and in tact.  It’s this property that makes teak more commonly found in its natural unfinished state as there is no functional reason to apply any external finish to the surface.  Some customers however choose to apply additional amounts of this teak oil to achieve a darker more stained look.  While this will preserve the “new” look of the furniture it must be reapplied every 2-3 years to maintain this appearance and so can become burdensome.  Also by leaving the teak in its natural state, the often desired patina gray look is naturally achieved where it cannot be, if a teak oil or other finish is applied to the surface of the furniture.

Price

While price is often a concern for consumers, sometimes it is not such a factor for consumers of wood patio furniture.  As with everything else, price is a measure of perceived value.  The more valuable a product is perceived to be in the mind of the consumer, the more it will cost.  This reason alone is why both teak and cedar patio furniture are generally more expensive than other common outdoor furniture materials such as plastic, wicker, or rattan furniture.  Teak and cedar themselves have a price difference too though which can be quite significant depending on the individual furniture item.  Here’s why.

How DfMA Is Helping The Healthcare Sector To Build Faster

Simplified design leads to more efficient construction. Design for Manufacture and Assembly, also known as DfMA, is a design process that simplifies the manufacture and assembly of various construction elements. In general, DfMA, prefabrication and modular construction are terms which are used interchangeably. Therefore, the creation of prefabricated construction BIM modelling, modular construction drawings and DfMA modelling and drawings are required for the effective implementation of DfMA. The advantages of DfMA, especially faster build times, have been especially beneficial for the healthcare sector. Build time is a significant factor in the construction of new premises or addition of new complexes or renovation of existing healthcare facilities. Just how does DfMA accomplish that?

Well, initially, it was concrete components such as columns, beams and floor plates, that were prefabricated in the construction industry. Prefabrication evolved to include more elements, such as glazed, sealed and serviced components, modularized MEP (M&E) systems, facade treatments and even entire floors that could be stacked on top of, or placed adjacent to, each other by a crane. One methodology of prefabricating components from design to construction soon became known as Design for Manufacture and Assembly, or DfMA. Products designed using DfMA are of high quality and reliability, and while using DfMA the design stage progresses to the production stage with fluidity, ease and speed. Wet and dry services can be prefabricated in the factory and connected on site, speeding up the process. In some cases, modular construction enabled the building and the site work to be completed at the same time, and depending on the materials used, modular construction has been known to reduce the overall project time by up to 50%.

Unique to DfMA is the capability to manufacture a building’s floors, walls, ceilings, rafters and roofs all at the same time. While constructing in situ, floors are placed in position, then walls are put up, and lastly, ceilings and rafters are added on top of erected walls. Using DfMA, floors, walls, ceilings and rafters can be created simultaneously and can even be assembled at a factory to be transported to the site as a module, resulting in a faster process compared to conventional construction methods.

The use of DfMA has been known to improve safety as well as speed up the construction process, especially with steel work. Connections carried out at heights can be minimized or eliminated by using prefabricated modules. In certain cases, when panels are fixed from the interior of the building, scaffoldings can be eliminated, saving the time spent erecting them and associated costs. Standard assembly practices, such as vertical assembly and the use of self-aligning parts also saves time during prefabrication in construction.

DfMA is ably assisted with the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology. Embedding this technology into projects early in the design stage can minimize the time taken for the project and, as a result, the costs incurred. Hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities particularly benefit from DfMA, since healthcare projects typically take a long time to construct. This is due to the fact that many healthcare facilities include a variety of services that require complex data communications, clinical components and security equipment. Manufacturing individual components and assembling them into modules off site can improve the coordination of services, the quality of components and their reliability. Utilizing BIM technology in DfMA helps to realize the full potential of modularization and standardization. The BIM process enables the visualization and testing of components and modules virtually, before creating prototypes, resulting in reduced risks. Reducing risk is especially important for heavy-use areas, such as hospitals, for which construction time is crucial. Hospitals are also sensitive locations, and it is vital to limit the build time on site. Certain building types with a significant building portion that is repeated, such as hospitals, are well suited to the use of DfMA. Using BIM technology, DfMA can also cut construction time due to the fabrication off site of most of the building’s components and possibly most of the building’s floors. BIM technology also interfaces seamlessly with other technologies that drive the production of building components, an example being the ‘printing’ of concrete panels.

For hospital design, DfMA can be introduced during the bid stages of the project. The building’s structural and non-structural elements can be fabricated off site. This may include main structural external shear walls, which may be pre-installed with insulation and concrete. Facades can also be manufactured and delivered as bay-sized panels of up to 20 tons each, with windows, cladding, insulation and internal plaster boarding. After being delivered to the site, these panels can be placed in position quickly by cranes to create weather-resistant structures. Floor slabs with reinforcement do not require concrete pours on site. MEP (M&E) services can be fabricated in a factory and assembled on site, saving time.

Bathroom pods are becoming increasingly popular for prefabrication in the healthcare sector. The use of bathroom pods in construction have been known to significantly reduce the project schedule. In a project where 440 bathrooms had to be built, the use of prefabrication delivered bathroom pods 10 weeks earlier than the estimated schedule and that was before the time savings of installing pods against a more traditional route, which could add months as well as logistical challenges. Another reason why prefabricated bathroom pods work well to reduce construction time is because they present an effective solution to tight working conditions on site and poorly located connection points. The extensive coordination required early in the design process for bathroom pods can be aided to a great degree with the use of BIM technology in DfMA. BIM models help to detail the connection points and can help visualize working spaces. While designing bathroom pods, designers try to place the maximum number of connections on the edges of the module’s footprint, to minimize work above and around the pod in tight work spaces and therefore speed up the process.

For example, DfMA was recently used for an American healthcare facility. Modular elements were used for patient room bathrooms and HVAC and plumbing system parts. Although reduced material waste and labor costs as well as shorter time schedules were expected results, an unexpected benefit presented itself as material cost savings, 40% to be exact. Encouraged by the savings gained using DfMA, the facility decided to opt for modular components for patient room frameworks, headwalls, rough-ins for outlets and lines. Anti Graffiti Coatings

Anti Graffiti Coatings are clear protective coatings that can be applied to painted and unpainted surfaces. The protective coatings protect the surface and prevent the penetration of spray paint and marking pens into the substrate.

There are two types of Anti Graffiti Coatings available, Sacrificial and Non Sacrificial. Both products protect from graffiti attacks, but are very different from one another.

Sacrificial coatings actually come off every time the graffiti is removed. To remove the Graffiti, all you need is a hot water pressure washer, no cleaners of any kind are needed. This type of coating is loosened by high pressure hot water, and the product along with the graffiti comes off the protected surface, leaving the area just like it was before the protective coating was applied. Once the area is clean and dry, the protective coating will need to be re applied. This type of coating is ideal for areas that are environmentally sensitive, as its use guarantees that no cleaners will be used to remove the graffiti.

Non sacrificial coatings are exactly the opposite of sacrificial coatings, they do not come off the surface and can withstand many repeated attacks and cleanings. Some products offer unlimited attack warranties of up to ten years, based on the amount of coats of protective coating that are applied. Non sacrificial coatings are excellent to protect areas that are subject to repeated attacks, since they do not require a new application every time the graffiti is removed. Some manufacturers recommend the use of over the counter cleaners, like citrus based cleaners or Krud Kutter Graffiti Remover, to aid in the removal of the graffiti along with the use of the pressure washer. Most will recommend that water based cleaners be used to minimize the impact on the protective coating, and some manufacturers offer their own cleaners that are specially designed to work with their products.

These coatings are becoming more common in many areas, and in many localities, they are becoming mandatory. In the County of Riverside, in Southern California, new developments need to use non sacrificial anti graffiti protection on the project perimeter block walls and fences. This is a condition that must be met before projects are released for occupancy. In the city of Los Angeles, also in Southern California, city ordinances have been proposed to make protective coatings mandatory on all buildings in the city.

There are many options of anti graffiti coatings available in the market, and the finished appearance can vary from flat finish to gloss finish. Some products are almost impossible to see once they have cured, while some are very glossy. It is always recommended to first apply a small amount in an inconspicuous place to make sure the finished product appearance is acceptable. Once the coating has been applied and it has cured, removing the graffiti is easy and painless.

We recently completed a large block wall project in the city of Eastvale, California, and within one month of job completion, the new block wall was tagged in five different places. The client called us to have us take a look and to work with his cleaners to make sure the graffiti was being removed correctly and the coating was not being damaged. To show our client how easy it was to remove the graffiti, we stopped at their local Home Depot, purchased a bottle of a water based, biodegradable Spray Paint Remover and a vinyl bristle brush, and headed to the job site. Once at the job site, we just followed the instructions on the bottle, we applied the remover, let it sit three minutes, brushed lightly with the vinyl brush we had just purchased, and used the pressure washer to remove the graffiti. The paint came off with ease, it must have taken us a total of seven minute to remove one of the tagged areas, three minutes to let the remover soak in, a couple of minutes brushing to loosen the paint, and a couple of minutes with the pressure washer. When we were done, the graffiti was gone, and the protective coating was intact. The wall looked like nothing had happened.

The Humane Rat Trap – The Logical Choice

Rats are the ultimately famous pests that one could ever think of. They can be so tiny but amass to thousands quickly or grow bigger than expected. Some can even be mistaken for a cat. Either way, these creatures are deemed as a nuisance. They are famous for causing damage to your woodwork at home, eating boxed cereal and even destroying farm crops. They live in the sewers and carry serious diseases that could border on fatal. They do more harm than good. So if calling the pest control is your solution of choice, the most probable process of eliminating them is through killing. Chemical poisons are the most common. The use of rat poison is probably the most well known way to get rid of them, among others. But animal advocates have argued over the different options, stating that all of these are inhumane. Thinking of safer and more humane ways, people have come up with the idea of a humane rat trap.

No matter how irritating they are, rats still deserve to be treated the right way. While it may be true that all they do is pester humans, it is not a viable reason to justify killing them as a rightful thing to do. A humane rat trap was designed ironically to trap a very annoying animal in the most humane way possible – that is without taking the life out of it. Even the peanut butter and plaster of Paris balls are considered inhumane, because its end stage still results in a decomposing rat corpse.

The most common example of a humane rat trap is the tiny mouse cage specifically designed to lure and catch a rodent. Bait is placed inside and a one way door is provided. Once the furry little fellow crawls in, the door shuts and locks. But the rat would not wonder about it as it is too busy nibbling on its bait.

They say that this is the proper way to treat a pest. Trap them without hurting or killing them. Once they are trapped, they can be set free in an area that is far from your home. Setting them free in your backyard is like taking them for a walk in the park. They can easily come back due to their homing instincts. They are like Hansel and Gretel following the trail that they left when they got lost in the woods.

A humane rat trap would be your best option for a household invasion. Infestations involving a wider scope such as farms would probably need the expertise of a pest controller, which, unfortunately, utilizes ways that are apparently inhumane. Since their problem is more extensive, the aim is not just to kill a rat but to prevent them from further propagation because they can and they will breed. Farmhouses can just be the perfect spot for their breeding ground especially if left unkempt or abandoned, and setting up a humane trap could just be useless.

Does UV Work in Swimming Pools?

The short answer is yes. But don’t stop there.

There is an almost hysterical run toward using UV (ultra violet) light to “better” treat and disinfect swimming pools against bather and environmental waste. And you can’t stop at the answer above. You have to understand what UV treatment is actually doing. Like everything, there are pros and cons. There are also myths that must be dispelled and put to rest.

First the facts. There are 3 types of UV. UV-A: causes wrinkles in our skin and “burning”. UV-B aids in the production of Vitamin D. Both of these are able to penetrate the earth’s atmosphere. UV-C is used commercially and personally to disinfect food and objects. UV-C cannot penetrate the atmosphere and must be artificially created.

UV-C is excellent in sanitizing against bacteria, viruses, cysts & certain protozoa (including cryptosporidia and giardia – usually introduced from bather or environmental fecal matter – of which both are chlorine and halogen resistant). It does not allow algae to grow and multiply. It is non-irritating to mucous membranes, eyes and ears. It does not affect your pool’s water balance. It aids in reducing (not eliminating) chloramines and chlorine demand.

How does UV-C actually work? UV-C works works by disrupting the bacteria cells DNA and RNA. When the DNA and RNA are disrupted, the bacteria and viruses can not reproduce and multiply. Please note: UV-C DOES NOT KILL ANYTHING!

That’s the first myth or bit of information debunked. UV-C does not kill anything. Furthermore UV-C will NOT remove any micro-organisms. The other things that UV-C will not do are:

  • Protect against re-contamination. As swimmers enter the water with “new” bacteria and micro-organisms, those must be treated.
  • Work well in cloudy water. Cloudy water will effectively block the absorption of UV-C to do its job.
  • Work well in the presence of heavy metals (dissolved iron, copper and manganese). Iron effectively blocks UV-C absorption.
  • Work well in areas of high Calcium Hardness (over about 300 ppm). Areas of hard water will tend to be scale forming. Scale WILL form on UV-C tubing preventing its effectiveness.
  • Work as a stand alone sanitizing system. UV-C is meant to work as a supplement with chlorine, salt, bromine. Ionizers (Nature2, Frog, etc), biguanides (Soft Swim, Baquacil, etc) are not compatible.
  • Oxidize anything. Shock treatments (using either chlorine or non-chlorine shock products) must be done regularly to oxidize contaminants and certain other unfiltered matter.

Keep in mind that the way that UV systems are constructed, they must be properly maintained all of the time in order to be effective. I mentioned above that UV is rendered ineffective when the pool water is cloudy. The UV light cannot penetrate the turbidity of the water. The water must be clear. The same holds true of the UV generator.

The bulb of the UV generator is typically surrounded and protected by a quartz tube. The problem is that the quart tube will get cloudy; and it will get cloudy quickly. How quick? The “occlusion rate” (how cloudy it gets) is, on average, about 5% per week. What does that mean to you? It means that after about 7 to 8 weeks, almost 50% occlusion will have occurred. Or in other words, only about 50% of the UV light is able to work.

In areas of high calcium hardness or high scaling or hard water or high metals (iron, copper, etc), the UV generator tubing will scale and cloud even faster. Proper, weekly chemical cleaning of the tube is essential to remove and eliminate scale and naturally occurring bio-film build up. Using a bio-film remover such as AquaFinesse Pool Water Care tablets will aid in the cleaning. Otherwise, clean with a mild acid cleaner.

Is a UV-C system right for you? You will have to answer that question. The price range for a good UV system for the average swimming pool is anywhere from about $1300.00 to $2500.00. That’s a lot of money and can purchase of lot traditional good, hard working chemicals and products.

Do your research. Anyone claiming bacteria kill is completely misrepresenting the product. Remember, if it sounds too good, it probably is.

How to Weld Sheet Metal – MIG Welding Sheet Steel With a Hobart Handler 140

Sheet metal, like car body panels, can be welded with a 115 volt mig welder like a Hobart Handler 140 IF you are willing to do these 5 things…

  • Get a decent mig welding machine, preferably a good 115 volt mig welder like a Hobart Handler 140.

(Actually, 115 volt mig welders are often the best choice for welding sheet metal and a Hobart Handler 140 has all the features needed to weld thin sheet metal or even up to ¼” thick steel.)

  • Get a gas conversion kit so you can run .023″ bare wire. ( the Hobart mig welder comes with gas conversion)

Don’t even think about trying to weld in an auto body patch with flux core wire. You need to get a mig welder that has a gas conversion kit so that you can use 75/25 gas and use .023″ bare wire like E70s6 or E70s3.

  • Get some 75/25  gas  (thats 75 argon and 25 c02)

Pure Co2 is not what you want. Its fine for welding thicker steel, but for thinner sheet metal, 75/25 argon/Co2 is the ticket. It is more versatile too.

  • Get an auto darkening welding helmet…(Especially if you are a noob.)

Moving even slightly off the mark before you pull the trigger can make the difference between a good weld and a big blob of crap that will have to be ground off. Unless you love to grind, get yourself a decent auto darkening welding helmet. Being able to see exactly where the tip of your wire is when you pull the trigger on the mig gun makes a huge difference.

  • Use a hammer and dolly often to spread out the contractile stresses.

Sheet metal warps when you weld it… period.  You can’t stop it, all you can do is try to control it and then fix it.  A hammer and dolly used intermittently between small stitch welds is what the pro’s do to keep metal from distorting too much.

Welding sheet metal takes a bit of patience and finesse. But if you are willing to follow the rules. You can do it. 

How to Close a Drill Chuck That’s Stuck Open

Finding Closure

It’s not uncommon for a drill chuck to become a little out-of-whack and, as a result, not completely close. At best, this failure to close can be obnoxious; more often than not, though, it can really clam up your productivity. This is not good. – Keep your drill tight and your mood above water with these few steps that will help you quickly close your whacked-out chuck.

First Things First:

As you know, you will find a chuck screw at the center of an opened drill chuck. This screw is responsible for a large part of keeping your chuck where it’s supposed to be. Like all things with a job to do, though, occasionally these little screws can lose their way. Sometimes, the screw may be lost altogether, but, in either case, it just needs a little direction. Because a loose or missing screw will prevent the chuck from closing entirely, you must tighten or replace the screw. Remember, that this screw is reverse threaded. Thus, to tighten the thing, you must flick that wrist to the left (counter-clockwise) and spin the screw in a counter-clockwise motion. Once the screw is good and tight, the chuck should close and grip as it’s meant to.

Coming Back for Seconds:

If the chuck remains loose or continues to revert to the out-of-whack position after you have tightened the chuck screw, there are a few other factors that might be at play – first, the screw or the screw-hole itself (inside the chuck) may have stripped threads. This would prevent the screw from staying in place which, in turn, prevents the chuck from keeping tight. If the screw threads are stripped, replacing the screw should do the trick. If the screw-hole inside the chuck is stripped, though, you probably need a new chuck.

For one or another reason, the chuck may also be locked or rusted into a loose position – or – the fingers within the chuck may have slipped, slouched or broken preventing the chuck’s jaws from gripping a bit. – In these cases, you pretty much need to either replace the chuck or have the thing professionally inspected.

Now that we’ve reached the end of this tale, I think the moral of the story is, “keep your screws tight (or you’ll end up with a screw loose,” – yes, pun intended). Good luck with your chuck and remember that tight drilling requires a tight drill (chuck).
