Cowboy Etiquette

Most folks would not automatically conclude that cowboys have manners, but in my day, most cowboys were considered true gentlemen. The tipping of the hat to a lady still applies in many cases, but let's examine some less familiar forms of cowboy etiquette.

Growing up on a ranch in NE New Mexico brought numerous lessons in cowboy conduct, many of which are still alive in today's less formal environment. To go to dance in most places meant leaving your hat on the table while you were dancing (upside down, of course, to protect the brim). Spurs were never worn on a dance floor, even if you felt they looked cool.

This code was even more pronounced while out working on the ranch. We, who were fortunately enough to live the life, learned the lessons, sometimes the hard way. One sure way of approaching a cowboy's was to ride in front of him, or between him and the herd.

When gathering cattle, the riders converged on a pasture in a way similar to an army surrounding the enemy. Dropping off riders until one end of the pasture was fully enveloped; they converged simultaneously in a wide loop and remained in the same formation, as the loop squeezed the cattle toward the corral or gate you were heading for. A cowboy who got out of this formation was in for a difficult time.

This could call for some tricky decisions, especially if you were riding next to someone who did not know what they were doing. It was considered ok, though, if the cattle were getting away, to close up the gap by riding in front of someone, however, you needed to apologize as soon as possible.

You never handled another cowboy's hat, unless given permission, other wise this was grounds for a fist fight. Never set your hat on a bed either, although I think this had more to do with superstition than manners of any kind. It's supposed to bring bad luck.

One summer while helping neighbors brand, they had a chuck wagon, which we gathered at for meals. One cowboy had been consistently disrespectful and uncaring about the cowboy code, and one afternoon it all came to a head. He was introduced to the age old tradition of chapping.

Several cowboys grabbed him and held him over the tongue of the chuck wagon, while an older cowboy took off his chaps and proceeded to whip him across the back side with the chaps. This hurt the ego, much more than the rear end. I think the "chappers" got more out of it than the "chapee," as it certainly did not improve his disposition, but it was a lesson for us all in the code of the cowboy.

Cowboy courty is alive and well today, but the lines have been somewhat blurred by our permissive society. I've always felt it was an honor to be a cowboy, something to be proud of. Mutual respect between cowboys should always be the norm. Let's keep the tradition alive, and allow the dream of the American cowboy to live on.

Wrinkle Free Garments

Ironing the garments is considered a myth today. Our time-starved people want to spend minimum after cloth-care. Ironing the garments has lost the heat after the developments in wrinkle-resistant fabric finishes. Wrinkle-free finishes has hit the market of casual men's trousers in just five years.

The Wrinkle free quality of garment has been labeled various terms like Wrinkle-resistant, wrinkle free, durable press and permanent press. The industry also uses these terms for several finishing agents that have been appended to fabrics to avoid or reduce the amount of wrinkles.

Today's drive of wrinkle-resistant informal wear is not just a reprocessing of the dry, brittle durable press in wash and wear finishes of yesterday. The most modern wrinkle-resistant fabrics are newly devised products that were born of modern technology.

These wrinkle-resistant finishes were favored in the early 90's when they were inserted into men's all-cotton trousers. The finishes have given the root industry a new life on lease. Hagger and Farah are the first companies that introduced wrinkle-resistant pants to their bands. In 1992, Hagger introduced a line called "Wrinkle'Free" all-cotton pants. The line made a big impression on the market and by December 1993 Haggar gained 76 percent of the market in that class. Savan line is Farah's edition of the wrinkle-resistant pants. These lines of finishes were flattened with Duck Head and Levi Strauss Dockers.

Wrinkle-resistant garments are not free from problems; various troubles like attraction to grease and oil, fabric debasement and environmental interests are connected with these garments. Although, most of the problems have been reduced, companies are continuously ignoring techniques to better the properties. To improve the aesthetics is the biggest improvements.

Wrinkle-resistant garments should inevitably exist in wardrobes. After rejuvenating the bottom industry, the finish has hit the other segments of menswear industry like woven and knitted dress and sports shirts, jeans and suits. Wrinkle-resistant clothing incorporates even the children's attires and areas of womenswear market. The success of the finishes on garments will result in extra progress in other markets.

Due to the escalation of formal wear in the work place, the wrinkle-resistant industry has secured new heights in garment industry. Wrinkle-resistant garments are not only at department stores and mail order catalogs but also at stores like Wal-Mart and Kmart. The home furnishing industry has secured the wrinkle free concept by adding the finishes to sheets.

Our belief that wrinkle-resistant garments are costlier than finish-less ones is right; but for the most part they are moderately rated. All the products of wrinkle-resistant items do not give the same result. There are no inflexible courses of actions for manufacturers; since, it is suggested that customer should buy a popular brand that s / he trusts.

The wrinkle free finish (various other terms are "Easy Care", "Durable Press", "Wrinkle-Resistant", "Wash and Wear", "No-Iron" etc.) is achieved by cross-linking cotton. Permanent press finishes build cross-links between adjoining cellulose polymer chains; these provide cotton some flexibility and resiliency. Such cross-linked cotton can return to its earlier condition from deformity stresses and that wrinkles will not create.

Even today, DMDHEU is an important cross-linking force. With magnesium chloride as the acid catalyst to start a reaction, it creates cross-links in the formless areas of the fiber. Through the counteraction (> NCH2 => NH + HCHO), free formaldehyde is discharged. Insufficient curing also results into the discharge of formaldehyde at an extreme temperature. Various techniques have been evolved to define the amount of formaldehyde discharged, such as after-washing of cured fabrics, the insertion of formaldehyde scavengers like carbohydrazide to the bath, use of urea in the pad-bath or application through a spray, modification of DMDHEU to etherized, glycolated or methylated DMDHEU.

Options to DMDHEU are also being researched. Major choices are polycarboxlicacids, typically BTCA (1,2,3,4,4 Butane Tetra Carboxylic Acid) or citric acid. However, BTCA is not cheap to use and citric acid creates yellowing. Another technique has been to use polymers of maleic acid to create ester cross-links, and yet another to fix a quaternary group through an epoxidation counteraction to the cellulose chain to create cross-links. Research on all these options is in progress. Commercially, it is the remodeled DMDHEU (glycolated or methylated) that is most used now. The item is pre-cushioned to check untimely curing and also pre-merged with a catalyst. Today the catalysts with the basis of Magnesium are accepted most. When curing times are scanty, citric acid or aluminum chloride can also be compounded to speed up catalysis.

Following is a standard method for a pre-cure or post-cure finish:

DMDHEU (45%), 2-20% of weight of DMDHEU but not less than 1% owb; wetting agent. 0.1% owb; and softeners, 2-8% owb.

The wetting property lets the fiber internally penetrated, so that cross-linking may occur all through the fiber cross-section. A high-density polyethylene brings back some of the missing tear force and abrasion resistance by displacing lubrication. It also possesses a collaborative effect with silicone or fat-based softeners to create an agreeable hand. Among the silicone softeners, counteractive polysiloxanies with silanol functional end-groups (Fig 2) perform as elastomeric finishes providing better wrinkle resistance, good dimensional firmness (smooth drying properties) and exceptional soft handle with good sewing ability. They can also decrease free formaldehyde discharge by re-establishing part of the resin. Various types are available today: Pretavyl VP 1601A by Boehme Filatex Inc., and siltouch RS by Yorkshire Chemicals.

Types of Technology for obtaining "wrinkle free" finish
The dominant application techniques currently employed are based on the following processes: pre-cure; post-cure; garment-dip; spray (metered) application; and Vapor phase.
In pre-cure, the fabric is processed with resin, dried and cured in flat open-width form. This fabric can be used to manufacture garments that stand firm against wrinkling through wearing and have a soft look after washing and tumble drying. Since the cross-linked fabric defends any attempt to press in wrinkles, it will be impossible to bring in sharp long-lasting creases. Generally, such fabrics are applied in the womenswear market for some skirts, casual trousers and shirting where smoothness is the main benchmark.

A post-cure process provides a choice to manufacture a garment with soft drying and wrinkle resistant agents along with sharp creases that have a lasting effect for the life of the garment. In this treatment the resin is padded onto the fabric and discharged at low temperature (as in the Koretron process). The fabric is then cut, garment constructed and creases pressed into the garment. An extreme temperature treatment in this make up is given to cross-link resin. Although this procedure provides exceptional results, it has not been doing well with garment producers because of apparel limitations of colors, styles and fabric weight, and the requirement for a direct connection among mills, garment manufacturers and retailers.

To improve this procedure, a company in Japan applied a post-cure finish to fabric that was mercerised in liquid ammonia, giving excellent easy care properties together with the soft handle of non-cross-linked cotton. Liquid ammonia mercerisation is a process applied at ultra-low temperatures and it generates deconvolution of cotton, smoothing of the surface, swelling of the fiber to a circular cross section, enhanced absorbency, firmness and shine, and a very soft touch.

The other three alternatives are useful to finish the fabric only after it has been composed into a garment. In the garment-dip method, garments are fabricated from non-resistant fabric, then infused with a resin process similar to that applied to the post-cure process, extracted to about 65% wet pick-up and then tumble dried to 8-10 % moisture stuff, a critical factor that is determined using a moisture meter.

In the spray method, the resin is smeared by spraying it onto the garment during tumbling in an encoded revolving tool. A microprocessor is applied to gauge the accurate quantity of chemicals and to monitor the rotation time, expected wet pick-up, spray rate and process time. Like post-cure process, the garments are then pressed and cured. The process is more and more applied to both menswear and womenswear with the market moving towards washed-down appearance and softer handles.

In the vapor phase process, the fabric is dried and finished at the mill, cut sewn; before cross-linking, it is press into garment form. Gaseous formaldehyde is then used with an acid catalyst in a particular chamber oven. The garments are later processed to create cross-linking. Then the surplus moisture is drained. The formaldehyde itself creates the cross-links (conventional resin will always have unreacted N-methylol clusters that can hydrolyze to discharge formaldehyde). Manufacturers of shirts and other lightweight garments are using the treatment today. Neverheless, it is apparently not easy to manage, possibly resulting in uneven processes and higher strength losses.

Choosing fabric for "wrinkle free" finish

The garment finisher generally does not produce its own fabric and it may have to cope with unwelcome damages in tensile strength, tear strength and abrasion resistance in the fabric when cross-linking. Due to the added value, garments are returned since low strength might prove to be costlier than fabric returned.

For manufacturing an up-to-standard wrinkle-free garment, various safety measures must be taken in fabric choice:

. The root fabric must possess enough strength to put up with 40-60% loss in tensile and tear strength and still hold sufficient strength to provide a garment of satisfactory wear life and lastingness.
. It must also possess exceptional absorbency to let resin enter the very center of the fibers and create cross-links. Surface adhering resins do not give any useful results and are incompetent and causing waste.
. If the fabric is dyed, the dye must be able to hold acid catalysis and high temperatures. Sulfur dyes, which are recognized to produce acid upon storage, are to be completely avoided.
. Residual extractable on the fabric (like starch from size) can counteract with resin and minimize its influence; a high amount of size removal is so critical.
. Fabric pH should be between 6.5 and 7.0 with an alkalinity of less than 0.05% (expressed as sodium hydroxide).

Choice of equipment

Producers and researchers are continuously evolving tools to serve to this specialty section. But they are still perplexed if these new machines – specifically presses and curing ovens – are worth the investment. While selecting the technology, many features such as type of product (shirt or trouser), WR procedure, time, vacuum, temperature and chemicals must be taken into account.

The two most decisive factors working behind "A" quality pressing of 100% cotton and permanent press garments are temperature and control of cycle. Presses should be prepared with high-heat, cast aluminum

garments are temperature and control of cycle. Presses should be prepared with high-heat, cast aluminum heads or with additional electrical heaters to provide a processing temperature about 150 degrees centigrade. Since the temperature sets out the curing procedure and monitors the overall smoothness, it is very important to manufacture permanent press garments. Typically, presses active in garment factories function within the range of 116-125 degree centigrade will not provide a perfect finish.

Hoffman and Vapor-press International have introduced the latest range of pressing machines wherein microprocessor monitors both temperature control and pressure applied accurately. A feature called head-hesitation holds up the head lifting so that creases are not formed on the garment – such creases can set forever while curing. As a safety measure, a head positioning set up lets the head lift by an inch (after pressure is applied) allowing a vacuum to dry the garment completely. Pre-timely interference by mechanics is a major problem in garment factories. This complication is enhanced by an Operator Penalty System that counts penal points every time an operator attempts to disrupt the cycle.

Curing is generally performed in hot-air-box or tunnel ovens. A tunnel oven is faster but needs a specific amount of garment development and a material handling system to and from the tunnel. Airflow design in these ovens monitors temperature variations, movement of the garment and wrinkle relaxation, and is there before the most significant selection standard. Pladrest Heating Ltd., founders in this line of work, has surfaced with a series of ovens to permanently press garments. The air velocity is regulated at last, in as much that temperature variation has been shot down to a noticeable 3 degree Centigrade over a single garment. Evolutions are also on the go to improve microwave-curing technology. As against average convection curing, the temperature increase in microwave ovens is supposed to be faster, consistent through the fiber cross segment, and to give a minimum damage to the fiber.

Tweaks to Speed Up Internet Streaming Video

The birth of "Guerilla Video" sites, such as Peekvid.com, Alluc.org and Youtube.com have given users instant access to a plethora of free media files. Although streaming video technology offers instant access to video files, zero loading time is not always possible. There are many factors that attribute to your computer's ability to start videos immediately. Other factors such as choppy PC video playback and slow video streaming also hinder your viewing experience. There are easy fixes to these problems. Sometimes choosing another site for the source of the video streaming or a lower quality version of the video can award you with instant play. These alternatives are not always available. However, there are a number of tweaks that help speed up your streaming video startup times, eliminate choppy PC video play and stop slow streaming video.

Before we start with the tweaks to speed up slow streaming video, lets get a basic understanding of streaming video technology in order to stop choppy video. Streaming video is a prerecorded video files that can be distributed as part of a live broadcast "feed." The video signal is converted into a compressed digital signal and transmitted from a Web server. This server is able to be multicast the same file to multiple users at the same time. When you click on the on video it is partially loaded before you can access it. This is known as "buffering". This helps you to load and play the video instantaneously. Now lets take a look on how to cut down on buffering time, stop slow streaming video and eliminate choppy PC video playback.

Common Streaming Video Problems

Problem # 1: Choppy PC Video Playback – Choppy video is typically a PC performance related issue. Here are a few things you can try to stop choppy playback and improve computer performance.

Solution A. Turn Off Hardware Acceleration-All media applications require different aspects of your computer's hardware. Depending on the task, the requirements may change. Turning off hardware acceleration allows the application to set the requirements itself and not be forced to use one universal setting. Hardware acceleration has been known to cause choppy PC playback, application crashes and slow streaming video problems.

You can eliminate the problem below:
1.Click on "Start"
2.Click "Control Panel"
3.Select the "Settings" tab and click on the "Advanced".
4.Click on the "Troubleshoot" tab.
5.Disable the hardware acceleration completely by dragging the slider to the extreme left.

Solution B. Turn off Video Acceleration-The reason for this tweak is the similar to hardware acceleration. This act frees up resources in your media player and not your hardware. However you will need to decrease video acceleration in your chosen player. Some sites like Youtube.com do not offer this option. However, Windows Media Player gives the ability to easily alter this problem, following the steps below. Other players' instructions will vary.

1. In Windows Media Player
2. Click the "Tools" menu tab
3. Click on "Options"
4. Select the "Performance" tab.
5. Move the Video Acceleration Slider to "None"

Solution C. Adjust your Windows Desktop Visual Effects-You computer will get a significance boost in
speed. This tweak will also free up more resources for your media player and PC performance.

1.Click "Start", and then click "Control Panel".
2.Click "System" and choose "Display".
3.Find the "Advanced" tab and Click
4.Under "Performance", Click "Settings"
5.Under "Visuals Effects", you may choose from a list of options such as "Adjust for best performance" or custom. If you choose Adjust for best performance all the features will be unchecked.

For more performance tips check the "Speed Up PC" to free up more resources to stop PC choppy playback.

Problem # 2: Slow and Constant Buffering-This problem can be attributed to two factors internet speed and your media player. You can tweak your PC setting in both areas to cut down on slow streaming video. Remember that each player has its own buffer settings. Below is an how to change buffer setting in Media Player.

Solution A. Adjust Buffer Settings – To change the default buffer settings in Windows Media Player, use the following steps:
1.Start Windows Media Player
2.Click the "View" men
3.Click "Options"
4.On the "Advanced" tab, click "Streaming Media" (Windows Media)
5.Click "Change" to alter the buffer settings.

Remember that the higher you set the buffer the more of the clip will be loaded. The waiting time before you can see or hear the file will be longer, but there should be fewer interruptions once the clip begins to play.

Solution B. Use a Video Specific Proxy-A proxy allows for popular files to be loaded onto its servers. This eliminates the need for your computer to load the files. For example if you use the proxy, YouTubeProxy.org, you will not have to wait for your computer to download popular YouTube.com content because it may already have been loaded in the server. This is a great way to stop slow streaming video.

These are just a few tips to eliminate choppy PC video playback and slow streaming video. However, there are more advanced ways to stop this problem. Depending on the site, there may be independent software developed specifically to speed up slow streaming video. Also, remember the general maintenance is a good way to avoid choppy PC video playback.

Mid-Life Pregnancy – Mother Over 40, Delight Or Doom?

What do Geena Davis, Marcia Cross and Mariska Hargitay have in common? Well, besides being television stars, all three became first-time mothers after the age of 40. Mention a woman is pregnant and see people beam. Include the detail that she's above forty and watch the same beaming people frown and shake their heads. What is it about being over forty and pregnant that brings out such reactions in people?

By being a mom over 40, you are taking a risk. But so are you if you decide to go skydiving or parachute-jumping. There are risks in everything. From something as simple as crossing a road, risks are involved. However, doctors are always warning against 'older motherhood'. What are these risks? Here is a list which features a collaboration of the many and usual health scares that warn against becoming a mother too late.

Pregnant moms will have an increased risk of getting high blood pressure and gestational diabetes.

Birth defects in the child – Down syndrome usually takes the lead here. A combination of mental retardation and physical abnormalities that are caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. Women usually have a 1-in-100 chance at age 40 and a 1-in-30 chance of having a child born with Down syndrome.

Miscarriage – 25% risk for women at 40

Placenta Previa – This causes extreme bleeding during delivery.

Foetal Distress – Increases if this is a woman's first labor.

Low Birth Weight – A preterm birth (less than 37 weeks of pregnancy) can be reduced by not smoking during pregnancy

Caesarean Birth – Usually a C-section will be advised when a woman is 40 and over.

Moment of fear

Alright do not despair just 'cause you read that and already are pregnant and over 40. Sure complications may arrise due to age. But think about it. Complications could also arise from the habit of smoking you had as an impulsive teenager or when you were in your twenties, drowning your weekends in flavored martinis. Age certainly is a component in the production of a healthy baby; however, it is not the main determining factor. Many people over 40, all over the world, have given birth to babies, regardless of whether it's their first or second or third third (think: Jane Seymour, Emma Thompson, Susan Sarandon). How did they do it and continue to? You have to do your part to improve your pregnancy. Quell your fears with these tips!

Get a good amount of exercise before, during and after your pregnancy. Consult your doctor on what type of exercise you can do during the different terms of your pregnancy.

Follow a healthy diet. It's good for you and your baby.

Optimal prenatal care – Ladies, I can not stress enough on the importance of this.

What about after the kid has been born? Mid-life crisis VS Parenting duties?

Come on ladies. Having a child is an indication by itself, regardless of age, that you have reached mid-life and a crisis will soon happen, is not it. We kid, we kid (no pun intended).

But what is the real problem here? Creaking knees and popping ankles sounding off as you chase after your little one? Mid-life Mom, those problems pop up all the time due to lack of exercise. Think of the positive issues involved with you being an 'older' mom.

Goodbye isolation – While most of your friends are having long-distance chats with their kids or wondering how university life is going for their children, you are having fun discovering new things with your itty bitty baby.

Career's made – Most young mothers would be busy juggling career and baby but you … you've already made your career mark!

Wisdom – With age, come wisdom (we hope!) So wiser decisions regarding you, your child and your family may be made.

Being a mother is a blessing. Being a mother at an older age is an even bigger blessing. Do not let the worries and concerns shadow the most beautiful time of parenthood. Take it in stride and who knows, pretty soon you might out beat the youngger moms and be the 'cool mom' on the block!

Breast Reduction: Upper Back and Neck Pain Treatment

If your breasts are D-cups or larger, you have an increased risk of upper back and neck pain. The body's natural center of gravity is at the hips, and carrying a heavy weight above this center can stress the spine and tissues around it.

Large breasts can cause back and neck pain due to simple muscle strain. The muscles in the back, neck and shoulders must work to support the upper body, which is heavier than the muscles are built to support in large-breasted women. Postural changes occur as the body tries to compensate; the upper back and neck will often be dropped back, causing the lumbar spine to arch inward more. Occasionally, altered posture can cause abnormal curvature of the spell.

The spine naturally curves inward in the lumbar region of the lower back, out in the thoracic region connecting to the rib cage, and inward again in the cervical portion in the neck. Both women who adjust their posture in the forwarded way and those who simply stoop forward due to the weight of their breasts will eventually disrupt this natural curvature.

As the distance and angles between vertebrae change, increased pressure is placed on sections of spinal discs. These discs act as cushions between vertebrae, consisting of a gel center and a tough exterior. As pressure on the discs becomes consistently uneven, it is possible for them to bulge, the gel being pushed to one side and weakening the exterior ring.

Bulging discs can have no side effect at all. Some women with large breasts, however, may experience tingling, weakness and numbness in the arms and hands. This is especially typical of bulging disks between the 4th and 5th and 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae. Effects along this nerve pathway indicate that the bulging disc is impinging the nerves that exit the spine and travel to upper body parts. Nerve impingement can be a serious condition, and in order to avoid the risk of long-term nerve damage, treatment to restore normal disc shape should be thought.

For women with large breasts, a treatment plan for upper back and neck pain must include steps to dissect the weight of the chest. The best way to limit strain is to wear the appropriate bra size and find bras that support and distribute breast weight. Many women wear the wrong bra size, and for large-breasted women, that can be an expensive and painful mistake. It is a good idea to get fitted by professionals. Search your area for panty shops that do fittings, like the one found here: http://myintimacy.com/ . Although the cost of a good bra may seem prohibitive at first, it's much cheaper than surgery.

Postural retraining is another step along the recovery path. A physical therapist can help you build up supportive muscles in the back and shoulders, relieving pressure off the discs and better equipping your upper body to carry the weight of your chest. By assessing your post and movement, a physical therapist can help you to retrain your body to maintain a more natural curvature of the spell.

If physical therapy and special bras do not tie your neck and back pain, it is time to consider breast reduction surgery. This will immediately remove the burden of oversized breasts. The American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery rates the cost of breast reduction at $ 6,000 in the US, a number far lower than most surgeries for spinal discs. Insurance may cover a portion or the totality of the procedure if it is recommended by a doctor or orthopedic specialist.

It must be noted that having breast reduction surgery usually will not cure your upper back and neck pain overnight. The prolonged strain on your muscles and spine still needs undoing. Without retraining posture and relaxing chronically tense muscles, back pain will continue. If physical therapy was ineffective before surgery, it will likely work well as a supplement.

More information on breast reduction surgery can be found out http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/features/is-breast-reduction-right-for-you . Surgery is always a last resort; educate yourself on more conservative treatments before considering surgery.

Living Near a Cemetery

One aspect of a Feng Shui evaluation is to analyze the environment surrounding a building. When using Feng Shui to choice a home, most Feng Shui consultants will tell you not to pick one close to a cemetery. After looking at a beautiful home this past week that just happens to have a cemetery adjacent to the back yard, I decided to take another look at the idea of living near a cemetery.

Why care about what surrounds your home? Why not just focus on the internal energy? Well, simply put, the outside energy affects the internal energy of your home. Too much Yang energy is easier to feel than too much Yin. Here’s an example. Think of a home that has a busy highway running behind it. The fast moving energy and noise pollution gives the inhabitants an unsettled feeling, even on the inside of the home. A home like this would be described as unbalanced because it has energy that is too Yang. Yang energy is bright, loud, and hot.

Having your home next to a cemetery is just the opposite. The overall energy becomes unbalanced as well. Homes next to a graveyard or cemetery are too Yin instead of Yang. Energy that is overly Yin is harder for us to feel, though. Although viewed like a quiet park by some, others are very unsettled by the quiet process of decomposing that is occurring. Having a Yin home may not bother one at first, but little by little, it can make the inhabitants of that home decline, by reducing their drive. The same can be true of living near a stagnant body of water.

What can be done if you find yourself living in a home you love that is adjacent to one of these situations? First step is to buffer your home from the energy. For example, the house I looked at this week has a ravine full of large trees in-between it and the cemetery. Adding Yang elements to the area near the cemetery would be helpful in balancing the energy. Examples of this would be outdoor lighting, bright flowers, flowering shrubs, a fire pit or a chiminea.  Fire and light are very Yang elements and would work to balance the energy. On the flip side, an example of reducing activity in the house that is too Yang, would be to add Yin elements. Again, adding trees and shrubs which can filter sound and light energy will help. In addition to you could add the ultimate Yin element; earth. A decorative brink or stone wall or even a mound of soil with landscaping on top would help to balance the energy and buffer the home. As always, think about what makes sense in your landscaping before adding remedies.

Making sure your home is sheltered and balanced from external elements will have the biggest effect on the internal energy. Be sure that any Feng Shui consultant you use analyzes not only the interior but also the exterior. This will help to ensure a supportive environment.

What Makes A Tribal Tattoo Design Distinctive?

Tribal tattoos are extremely popular, but the truth is that the term covers a wide range of designs. Their origins, as the name suggests, can be seen in artwork and tattoos of tribes from the past. However, nowadays tribal tats have taken on their own distinctive look in the Western world.

Defining Characteristics of Tribal Tattoos

Tribal designs are generally bold, black lines that are formed in a number of different abstract shapes. They are made of various symbols depending on the tastes of the wearer, and some symbols may carry a deeper spiritual meaning than others. But there are no rules – tribal tats may also be colored or feature detailed shading: they’re no longer limited to black.

Types of Tribal Tat Designs

Aside from the more modern designs described above, you may also see the following types of design:

Celtic Tattoos: Celtic tattoo designs may be considered tribal in their own right, though many of the traditional bold tribal tattoos are now incorporating elements of Celtic artwork, such as detailed knots.

Historic Tribal Designs: Modern tribal designs may have their history in real life tribes of the past, but the artwork has certainly changed. Historic tribal tat designs will actually be based on a specific tribe, such as the Aztec or Maori people. These may look completely different from the tribal tattoos of today. Many people choose these kind of tattoos to represent a close bond they may share with that particular tribe.

Other Images: In themselves, tribal designs are abstract. However, they are now being used as a creative way to fill in the body of more recognizable images, such as those of animals, stars and so on.

The truth is that inspiration for tribal tattoos can come from anywhere. Whether you want to show off your cultural roots by replicating a type of tribal tat from the past, or simply prefer the bold statement that a modern tribal designs can make, more and more tattoo artists are now specializing in this kind of tattoo design.

Conflict Follows The Emotional Path of Lowest Resistance

Have you ever stopped to think why you respond to conflict like you do? This is not only interesting information, but very valuable information for anyone who finds conflict in their life … oh yes, that is ALL of us! I do not remember where I read this information, or I would give proper recognition, however, this is so good – I just have to share it.

What is conflict?

1. a serious disagreement or argument

2. incompatibility or at a variance; clash

What do we feel when we have conflict? We feel a range of emotions from anger, to fear, to hurt and so on.

The definition of emotion is: energy in motion

To add to that definition, emotional energy follows the path of least resistance. Where it has gone before it will go again!

Picture every emotion you have ever had. It was, indeed, energy in motion. And, we have all experienced the same emotions when we are in the midst of a conflict similar to others we have previously experienced.

Here is the part I find both fascinating and frustrating. Each time we find ourselves in a similar conflict – not only does our emotional energy follow the path of least resistance – but, each time that path is traveled the path becomes 10 times stronger! Picture a path through the grass that one person has walked down. Their may be very little evidence that the grass has even been walked on. But picture the same grass after ten people have walked on it and it is becoming quite compacted down. Picture once more that grass after one hundred people have walked on it. There is an undeniable path worn.

If we compare the grass to each time we have a particular emotional response … after just three times it has already had the equivalent of 100 people walking down that path.

It is not hard to see why, in the midst of conflict, we find ourselves having the same behavior, saying the same words and experiencing the same outcome.

I often respond poorly to conflict, but it is also possible to respond to conflict in better ways. Personally, I desire to turn the cycle around so that each time I experience the same, or similar conflict, the path I follow to ending (or diffusing) conflict becomes ten times easier.

Path # 1

Conflict occurs

Negative emotional arousal / response

Poor result

Emotional unrest

Path # 2

Conflict occurs

Positive (good / neutral) emotional arousal / response

Best Fabric For You – How to Buy and What to Look For

Here's some helpful hints when buying fabric.

You can select the best fabric for you by knowing the advantages and disadvantages.

Make sure you read all labels for care and fabric content.

Here's a guide when you're not sure about fiber:

You will be able to identify fiber absorbency by the wear of ability and durability. The more absorbent fibers are the more comfortable they are to wear. They absorb body moisture and moisture. Since they absorb moisture they are less sooner to static electricity and will clean more easily.

The less absorbent fibers are the less comfortable they are to wear, but since they are less affected by body heat and moisture they wrinkle less and they hold their shape better. However, they become static-prone. Here you can determine the best fabric for you that will wear well by knowing their absorbency.

More absorbent – wool, linen, silk, cotton and natural fibers Less absorbent rayon, acetate, acrylic, nylon, polyester and synthetic fibers.

Here you can determine the best fabric for you that will wear well by knowing the lengths of fibers that will affect its performance and appearance.

Long fibers are synthetics. Silk is the only one that is a natural long fiber, but there are longer wool and cotton fibers that have some of these characteristics: Lustrous and smooth, pill resistant, more resilient.

Short fibers are natural and synthetic fibers cut. They are cut into short lengths twisted into a yarn that has a fuzzier appearance like soft and fuzzy, tend to pill and wrinkle more easily. Now wool gabardine is a long fiber and wool flannel is a short fiber.

Be sure to read the labels on ready-to-wear and on the end of the bolt for your best fabric overall guide to fiber content and care.

Manufacturers use blends for decreasing cost, increase prestige, increase wash ability, decrease wrinkling, increase comfort, or increase strength.

A pair of pants that is 65% cotton, 35% polyester will wrinkle less and wear better than all cotton. A pair of pants that is 65% polyester, 35% cotton will wrinkle less and wear better, but be less comfortable.

People today go towards comfort and easy care, so you can determine the best fabric here on the blends of fabrics.

Fabric labels. Here's a list of fabrics that you can decide would be the best fabric for you and they they will wear:

Linen and Cotton – Has increased absorbency and comfort, less static build-up and better dye ability.

Silk is luster, luxury and comfortable.

Wool – Has added bulk and warmth, increased absorbency, increased shape retention and wrinkle recovery.

Mohair has added strength, loopy texture, added luster.

Camel and Cashmere has added warmth, luxury, improved drape ability, soft smooth texture.

Angora rabbit hair has softness and fuzziness.

Acrylic have improved softness, wool-like qualities.

Rayon is a lower cost fabric with better absorbency, lower static build-up and added luster.

Nylon has increased strength, abrasion resistance, wrinkle resistance and lower cost.

Acetate has improved drapes ability, more luster and shine and lower cost.

Polyester has wash and wear qualities, wrinkle resistance, shape retention, durability and is a lower cost fabric.

Spandex has comfort and elasticity.

Different blends can change the care instructions. If you have a wool skirt it can become washable if it has polyester added.

Look at the care instructions and care as you would for sensitive fabrics. For example, a wool becomes washable if polyester is added. If you are not sure of the care read the instructions and care as you would for the most sensitive fabric. Here you can determine the best fabric by how your clothing should look and feel.

The fabric weaves are how it affects the durability and appearance:

Plain weave – For each yarn it runs over one and under another in both directions and produces a strong firm fabric. Fabrics can be of all weights like chiffon, gingham, canvas, flannel, challis are examples of this most common weave.

Satin weave – The yarns passes over several crosswise yarns to produce very lustrous, shiny fabrics. These long yarns can easily be worn by causing snags.

Charmeuse and satin are a perfect example of this fragile weave.

Dobby and Jacquard weaves – There figurative designs are woven into the fabric. Dobby designs like birdseye and pique are usually small, geometric figures. Jacquard designs like damask, tapestry, brocade are more complicated and can be quite large. They are both expensive to make and can be fragile if there are large areas of long float threads.

Twill weave is a diagonal parallel rib that is a formed weave. It is the most durable weave of all. It is strong, resilient, wrinkle-resistant, and often soil-resistant due to the yarn density like denim, gabardine, silk surah, and calvary twill.

Knits are a series of interlocking loops instead of yarns that cross over each other at right angles. Knits are durable, comfortable. They give and are subject to snag at times. There are both single knits like tricots and sweater knits and double-knits like interlocks and traditional double knits.

Here are some shopping tips for finding the best fabric:

Wool and wool blend tweeds are very fast to sew because they hide sewing mistakes. They also mold into shape easily.

Solid colors are faster to sew than plaids, prints are faster than both as the print in the fabric does not require matching. Plaids are take the most time because of the cutting concentration and planning required.

Make a note in a small notebook with the following five basic pieces and make sure you take it with you when shopping for your best fabric. Also, make sure you use the yardage conversion chart on the back of the pattern catalog if your fabric width is different.

Jacket, Pants, Skirt, Blouse, Matching skirt, Jacket lining and Jacket interfacing.

Buy the same amount of lining as for the fabric you will need for pants and skirts. Will you be able to tell if this is the best fabric that works for you.

Do the following tests on ready-made clothing:

On wrinkle resistance fabrics crush it in your hand and release. Now, do the wrinkles fall out quickly? If they do not the garment will look like it was not pressed. so, high natural fiber content will wrinkle more.

To check for shape and wearing qualities stretch it with both hands and hold for 5 seconds. If it slips apart easily then strain on the seams could lead to a problem at stress points, but, if it springs back, it will hold its shape.

Tighter knits the heavier it is the less absorbent the fiber and the better it holds its shape.

Take a look at the fiber content for comfort by checking the absorbency and compare it to your fiber. These are lightweight and higher in natural fiber content are more comfortable to wear.

Synthetics are warm and feel clammy because they do not breathe or absorb as well as natural fibers and may not be the best fabric for you.

If you are buying fabric or ready-made clothing you should wisely invest your money into the best fabric quality you can afford for your five basic long wearing pieces. These coordinates need to be durable and make you look great! Here are some advantages and disadvantages. You can determine which would be the best fabric for you:

Here's some advantages and disadvantages on different fabrics:

Wool Gabardine:

Advantages: It wears very well, comfortable and holds their shape well. Wrinkles hang out.

Disadvantages: Dry clean only. It shows press marks very easy. Cleaners can over press too. You can request careful pressing, but it's very expensive.

Polyester Gabardine:

Advantages: It is wrinkle-resistant. It is also very durable and washable. It's a year around fabric except in the hottest and cold climates. It always looks crisp and fresh.

Disadvantages: May snag and is less comfortable to wear than wool, as polyester is cold in winter and warm in summer.

Linen:

Advantages: It is very comfortable as fiber is extremely absorbent. Dark colors or neutrals are season less fabrics.

Disadvantages: It loses body after many cleanings. You can spray fabric finish to restore crisp feel. Dark colors show more wear than light color due to the dyes used.

Crazy-like:

Advantages: Choose the heavier weights for better wear and wrinkle resistance. It wrinkles less than real linen. The blends are rayon, polyester, cotton. Can be worn year round in dark or neutral colors. Washable.

Disadvantages: It loses its body after washing or dry cleaning. It is not as durable as real linen or as rich in appearance.

Polyester Crepe:

Advantages: This fabric drapes very nicely. You can have fullness without bulk. It is wrinkle resistant, very durable, machine washable. Loosely woven fabrics will be more comfortable.

Disadvantages: Pretreat oily stain before washing. Remove from dryer immediately to prevent heat setting wrinkles and puckered seams. Feels clammy with tightly woven types which are not absorbent.

Silk Crepe:

Advantages: This fabric drapes like no other fabric, it feels wonderful and comfortable in all climates. Recommend dry cleaning, but can be washed.

Disadvantages: Very expensive. Must hand wash or dry-clean. Perspiration can damage fibers and stain.

Silk Broadcloth:

Advantages: A sportier fabric that wears better than crepe. Available in shirting stripes, plaids, gingham, also solid colors. Hand washes nicely. Less expensive than crepe de chine.

Disadvantage: Does not drape as well as crepe. Wrinkles, perspiration can damage fibers and stain.

Cotton or Blended Broadcloths:

Advantages: More casual than the fabric above. Washable, usually inexpensive. More comfortable than polyester; wrinkles less than silk. Blends include cotton, polyester, rayon.

Disadvantages: Does not drape as well as crepe. Those with higher cotton content will wrinkle more, higher polyester content will make less comfortable.

Wool or Wool Blends:

Advantages: It's soft, lightweight, drapeable. Those with wool should be dry-cleaned, some blends (cotton, rayon, polyester) may be washed. Usually has a soft, warm, brushed surface.

Disadvantages: Wool is more expensive to buy and to care for, but most durable. Generally a cool weather fabric.

Wool Tweed, Flannel, Wool Blends:

Advantages: This fabric is easy to sew. Flannel is a good wintertime fabric and comes in medium and light weights for all climates. Blends (wool, polyester, nylon, acrylic) are usually lighter weight, lower in price and some are washable.

Disadvantages: This fabric is for winter season only. Can be expensive. Flannel wrinkles more than wool gabardine. Blends will not wear as well as 100% wools. Can be scratchy. Dry clean 100% wools.

Wool Knit, Jersey:

Advantages: All weights are comfortable to wear. Warm in winter. Drapes well in lighter weights, tailors well in heavier weights. Knits are the easiest fabrics to sew.

Disadvantages: Very expensive. Can snag more easily than a woven fabric. Will stretch out of shape during wear, but can be pressed back to shape. Dry Clean only.

Polyester Knits:

Advantages: All weights are wrinkle-resistant, travel well. Machine washable. Hold their shape. Inexpensive.

Disadvantages: Like all polyester, can be warm in summer and cold in winter because fiber does not breathe. Pretreat oily stains before washing, remove from dryer immediately.

Corduroy, Velvet, Velveteen:

Advantages: Can be sporty or dressy, depending on type. Some are washable others should be professionally cleaned and pressed. Inexpensive.

Disadvantages: Can show press marks and wear lines easily, not very durable. Require special sewing techniques. Wrinkle easily, will stretch out of shape during wear, but will recover shape during washing or dry-cleaning.

Ultrasuede brand fabric:

Advantages: Elegant and extremely durable. It is versatile and comes in two different weights for many types of garments. Machine washable, easy care. Holds shape during wear, can be season less, depending on color. Sews easily.

Disadvantages: Very expensive. Requires special, but easy to learn, sewing techniques. Because it is partially polyester, it will be warm in summer but not as warm as 100% polyester.

After reading about the different types of fabrics you can decide which is the best fabric for you.

Using a TENS Machine to Fight the Negative Feelings of Depression

First of all, I’m not a doctor or therapist. I just have spent most of my life learning from them, to undo the effects of major depression that I’ve had from childhood. If you suffer from depression, first talk to your medical professional to see what approach is best for you. That is what I’ve done, but I add to what I’ve learned by trying a few other things on my own. Don’t do anything to yourself that is potentially self-injurious, it pays to research any new technique or approach thoroughly, just to be safe. Whatever works for me may not work for you, we all have our own ways of responding to different treatments. I just know that not all my recovery has come from what was learned at the doctor’s office. Being exceptionally strong-willed, my mission has mainly been to boost self-esteem, and fight those inner feelings of sadness that never go away (effects of depression.) Here are some ways that have helped me live a productive and successful life, despite mental challenges.

Six months ago, it was necessary for me to go for physical therapy for a slipped disk in my back. The therapist hooked me up to a small machine called a TENS unit, for one of my treatments. They put small, non-invasive sticky circles (electrodes) on the part of my body needing therapy and then turned the machine on. It felt really good, sort of like a massage. Depending upon how the therapist adjusted the dials, the machine would make knocking or pinging sensations on my back. There are also knobs to adjust the intensity of each sensation. After researching the TENS unit on the internet, I ordered a small one, about the size of a deck of playing cards.

According to what I read about them, TENS machines are not only good for distracting your body into feeling good sensations rather than pain, but they can make your body produce endorphins, or feel-good chemicals, too. This intrigued me, since having depression, I’ll take all the feel-good anything I can get (as long as it is both moral and legal.) So, I set up to test this on myself and see if there was any merit to the theory. After years of taking various anti-depressants, some work more than others but none completely take away depression, in my experience. Not being a scientist or doctor, I read up on everything about the TENS machine. There are rules that come along with the machine, like not putting the electrodes on the head, neck or the heart areas. Make sure to follow all of them thoroughly. People with pacemakers should not use TENS units, because it can interfere with the way they work. As with medicines, ask your doctor before using one.

By placing the electrodes along my spine, and setting the TENS settings to the recommended low frequency (pulse) levels. You want low muscle contraction, and to use the TENS for approximately 20 to 40 minutes. If you set it for higher muscle contractions, your muscles may ache later, so I rely on what the experts say, to use it at low settings. For more detailed information, I found these sites helpful:

http://www.bootsmaternityrentalproducts.co.uk/abouttens.php
http://www.medcareservice.com/Pain-Control-Mechanism-Article.cfm

Using the TENS unit has helped my overall mood, it seems, as after using it, my demeanor is calm and relaxed. Though I don’t know if this is due to the machine itself or not, but I believe that using it has helped me. Combined with other treatments, this TENS therapy is assisting me (along with other techniques for reducing depression) in making a more enjoyable life. Go ahead and research TENS units online, and see if this is something suitable for you. In my point of view, it is a viable way to help combat depression.

Is Good Posture Hurting Your Back?

Proper posture is supposed to help keep our backs healthy. Why, then, do some experience back pain when sitting or standing properly? If you are trying to relieve back pain by improving posture and experiencing more of it, don’t give up just yet.

Muscles learn behavior. Technically, “muscle memory” refers to the brain’s tendency to record repeated behaviors and make them automatic in the future. If your posture trains your muscles to be tense or lax, eventually the brain will send signals to those muscles that cause them to tense up or disengage automatically. This is why proper posture is difficult to perform; it is a retraining of your muscles and brain that takes time.

Slouching, characterized by stooped shoulders, rounded lower back and tucked pelvis, is the classic example of poor posture. Let’s analyze the ways in which this positioning and training affects muscles. Rounded, stooped shoulders cause muscles in the chest to tighten and shorten in length. The natural lumbar arch in the lower back is flattened out by slouching; this strains the lower back muscles. Muscles in the stomach are not allowed to engage in this position, causing further strain to the lower back muscles which must support the upper body by themselves. Muscles within the hip are shortened when sitting for prolonged periods of time, and if your pelvis is not neutral, they will become even tighter.

The many muscular changes that slouching causes do not simply go away when you sit up straight; the tight muscles in the chest and hips will resist lengthening while the overstretched, strained muscles in the back will not be sufficiently conditioned to perform their task. This is why, at first, good posture can actually cause back pain.

It is still important to correct posture; even if your back didn’t hurt before, poor posture will eventually cause pain. As the tug-of-war increases between imbalanced muscles, you may suffer chronic pain due to tenseness and strain. If the muscles of the back cannot sufficiently support the spine’s alignment, you run the risk of disc and vertebral problems. Finally, spinal joints will eventually be affected by poor posture. Correcting your alignment can prevent chronic pain conditions.

Helpful Tips

Though it is important to work through the pain, you should not simply force your muscles into new positions without a complementary plan. You will need to lengthen your tight muscles and build your weaker ones to make correct posture possible and, eventually, painless.

After stretching tense muscles, the exercises you do will focus on core strength. Developing the abdominal, lower back, hip and buttocks muscles will allow you to hold your spine up. See the Mayo Clinic’s slideshow of balanced core exercises at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/core-strength/SM00047.

For some people, the damage done to the muscular system will require more than simple stretching and exercising. The help of a massage or physical therapist may be needed to relax tense muscles. Deep tissue massage or self-myofascial release can accomplish this. If postural dysfunction is severe, a physical therapist may need to guide you in exercise technique. Finally, if poor posture has caused your spine to become misaligned, you may require chiropractic care.

Another useful tip is to invest in a lumbar support cushion. While you work on developing a strong core, this type of cushion will help to support your upper body’s weight until your muscles are strong enough to do so without assistance.

If proper posture is causing you pain, this is a testament to the damage poor posture has done to your body. Your efforts can be assisted by stretching, exercising and using a lumbar cushion. If you are unable to correct your problem at home, don’t hesitate to seek out professional care. The future of your back may depend on it.

Found the Perfect House For Sale? Hire an Inspector

Buying a home is both exciting and nerve-wracking. It is often cited as one of the most stressful life experiences, along with having a baby and getting married. Even if a buyer and his real estate agent find the perfect house for sale, there's uncertainty. So what's a homebuyer to do to seek a little peace of mind about this major decision? Hire a professional home inspector.

What Is A Home Inspector?

There used to be a time when buyers did not hire a third party inspector unless the house for sale was old or visibly in need of work. Buyers relied on their own review of the home and the information provided by the real estate agent.

Now inspections are quite common. Most real estate contracts allow buyers to have the home inspected. Even in the case of new home purchases, hiring an inspector is a good idea. An inspector is a trained professional who can identify any problems or potential issues with a house for sale that the buyer or even real estate agent would not be able to discern.

How To Find A Good Inspector

Finding the right inspector is harder than it may seem. There are many to choose from and what they check varies. Your real estate agent should be able to provide a few recommendations. After that, a buyer needs to do his or her research to make the right choice.

The American Society of Home Inspectors is a great resource for finding information about the state requirements for home inspectors. The organization can also refer buyers to local home inspectors who are members. ASHI, and most other professional organizations, provide members with training and certification programs. Be sure to ask about professional memberships and affiliations when interviewing an inspector.

Ask for references of past clients and call them. Make sure at least one of the referred clients have been living in their home for several months or more. Some issues will not show up until months after closing.

It is vital to understand what the inspector will and will not do. Some inspectors check the roof, some will not. What about the swimming pool? Do they check all appliances, or just heating and cooling systems? What about checking for lead and asbestos? Ask for a sample report or checklist. Does it provide standards for each item listed, or is it just a checklist?

Finally, ask about errors and omissions insurance. This insurance essentially covers the inspector if he misses a problem or issue. Not all inspectors carry such insurance and it does not necessarily mean that they're a bad inspector. However, if they do not carry insurance, it's a good idea to get a written explanation of the inspection company's policies when a mistake occurs.

Housing Inspection Costs

The average cost to inspect a house for sale is between $ 300 and $ 400 per inspection. However there can be additional costs. For example, testing for Chinese drywall can cost $ 200. Expect to pay about $ 100 for a radon exam. Asbestos tests can cost $ 50 or more. Make sure the inspector provides a full description of what's covered under the base price, and what tests and inspections are add-ons.

Ultimately, an inspection should save money and headaches. If any issues are found, a buyer should be able to work with his or her real estate agent to renegotiate the price of the house for sale. If the problems are too significant, the buyer may abandon the deal. Even if the inspector finds no issues, a few hundred dollars is worth the confidence that a good inspection can provide.
