Gold Goes Through Trial by Fire

When it comes to measuring gold content the most accurate and widely favored method is the fire assay. In this method someone scraped off a very small but from the gold object. This scraping is then wrapped in lead foil and silver is added to it. This combination is put into an extremely hot oven or furnace. The heat is so intense that it actually dissolves the silver. What is left is pure gold. This precious metal is them weighed.

Coming in second to the Fire Assay in accuracy in measuring gold is Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry. There is no furnace used in this method. Instead, a small sampling of a gold object is dissolved in acid and the resulting substance is analyzed in an Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer. This instrument is rather costly. So not only is this method not as accurate, it costs quite a lot more than the Fire Assay. One advantage that Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry does have over Fire Assay is that it can measure the other metals that are alloyed with the gold.

The good news for you, however, is that you don’t have to do any of these things. When you want to sell gold, it is not up to you to test for the gold’s purity. If you sell it to an online gold buyer they will send you what you need and then you can leave the testing up to them. They will tell you how much your precious metal is worth and give you cash for gold and you won’t have to lift a finger.

Search Wars! – MSN’s Opening Salvo

With all the recent publicity given to Google as the Internet’s number one search service, it’s hardly surprising that Microsoft has already started work on re-vamping their MSN search service. Okay, it’s still powered by the Yahoo engine, but according to Microsoft it has been “cleaned up” and the new service mirrors much more the kind of “non-commercial” results which are currently displayed by Google.

Costing some $100 in development costs and lost advertising revenues, MSN’s makeover offer the end-user a much more uncluttered screen and again this aesthetic change mirrors the simple interface of Google. Results too are served quicker than the old system, or so Microsoft claim, although they supply no data on how this compares to Google.

The web search market is currently dominated by Google and Yahoo although Microsoft are now openly stating that they will be edging their own search engine into this market by the end of 2004.

This mega-upgrade, which is currently undergoing full testing at Microsoft, breaks away from the Yahoo engine and be powered by their own software engine and algorithms which will, they claim, enable people to search for what they want rather than be presented with a number of paid/sponsored results. Should this happen, the move away from paid-for results will be a big step for Microsoft, who, in the past, have come under universal criticism, as end-users have not had confidence that the results served to them were unbiased.

With the search needs of over 350 million people up for grabs, Microsoft are keen to dissuade people from using the other engines. But with over 80% of the current daily global Net searches being performed on Google, Microsoft have much work to do. But for those who fear for the future of Google with Microsoft breathing heavily down their neck, you might take comfort from a time, not so long ago, when Microsoft considered itself bigger than the Internet. Does anyone remember Microsoft Network? Thought not!

As for Google, while they do not have the same aggressive marketing culture as Microsoft, they are very inventive, creative and above all, they are already internationally successful; holding one of the most recognized brands in the world. Far from standing still, Google has quietly expanded its range of services and now even offers an affiliate scheme to webmasters to host Google AdSense Ad’s on their websites. But perhaps it’s a mark of the trust and confidence that people have in Google as a corporation, that their have the only affiliate scheme on the Net which does not specify up front what commission it will be paying.

I suspect that when the Seach Wars are finally concluded it will be the confidence end-users have in the results they are served which will win out and not necessarily the best or fastest technology. Currently of course, Google are streets and houses ahead of both Microsoft and Yahoo in the public confidence stakes and it will be interesting to see if this confidence can be maintained following Google’s much publicized floatation on the Stock Market.

Microsoft may well find that winning public confidence in this war is harder than the creation of any technology they wish to introduce and in the end, just as they did with Apple, Microsoft may well consider buying into that confidence and snap up a major chunk of Google’s stock.

Pumping Carbon Dioxide to Generate Power and More

A new study administered recently by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory appears to show that by pumping carbon dioxide through hot rocks two different positive effects can be realized. First, this method has the ability to generate power, which has obvious effects in regards to the current the current modes of producing power. In addition to this advantageous result, by propelling the carbon dioxide through the hot rock, these dangerous greenhouse gases that are produced by fossil fuel power stations may be absorbed.

Karsten Pruess, the hydro-geologist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory who carried out this studied, claims that “carbon dioxide could theoretically boost the amount of energy produced by hydrothermal plants by 50% or more….” and that “the technique could be used to dispose of the carbon dioxide produced by conventional power plants, which contributes to global warming.”

In order to take control of the geothermal power, heat must be extracted from below the surface of the Earth. This new method being studied by Pruess can extract this heat more efficiently than the current method, which involves water being pumped through the hot rocks and subsequently being extracted again.

Pruess’ hypothesis prior to utilizing the Soultz hydrothermal plant located in northwest France was that his method would be more resourceful than the plant’s method of pumping water. Though he was not completely confident in this hypothesis prior to commencing the study, he learned that it is beneficial to take risks and attempt new solutions.

On top of the fact that driving carbon dioxide through the hot rocks produces more energy by up to 50 percent, it also necessitates less energy to be used in undertaking the process. This is due to the fact that the hot gas in the exit hole of the rocks is less impenetrable than the cooler gas at the entry, subsequently meaning reduced pumping would need to be done because of this density. Overall, this novel idea appears to be a win-win situation regarding the proposal of a new form of renewable energy.

Let us also look to the second aspect of absorbing the dangerous greenhouse gas that carbon dioxide is. According to Pruess’ study, it seems to be inevitable that some amount of the gas would seep into the rock, storing the carbon dioxide. Although this seems like it would be an extreme positive, Robert Pine of the Camborne School of Mines in the United Kingdom thinks there could be some adverse affects from this.

His take on it is this: “While carbon dioxide is unlikely to escape from such traps, rock fractures, which are common in regions used for hydrothermal operations, could allow gas to leak out. Using gas fields might be better, but because they aren’t very hot you would have to go very deep to get to the heat.”

So, although he still appears to, in general, advocate the idea that Pruess has proprosed, in his opinion there are precautions that should be taken to ensure the most advantageous results from the new method.

How to Gain Lean Muscle Fast!

How to gain lean muscle fast? A question for the ages for the skinny guys! We all dream to have the rock solid body showing off beautiful muscles, but how do you get to that point? That's were most can fall apart.

Knowing what to do and what not to do goes a long way to your success in finding out how to gain lean muscle fast. So here are some vital things to know through your muscle building process.

We all can find ourselves lifting and lifting without any thought process to go along without work out. We simply believe that we just lift weights and gain muscle fast. That's not the case. Aside from proper technique, you should always look to keep adding weight to your lifts.

This is crucial to helping you gain muscle fast! Why? Our muscles need to be pushed to grow. If you continuously stick to curling 40LBS for weeks you will only have that much muscle to continuously lift 40LBS. Add weight and force yourself to gain muscle.

Second, while in the process of adding weight gradually, use and interchangeable technique to keep your muscles off balance. Never give your body any excuse to adapt and become comfortable. To keep yourself out of a plateau, change your rep ranges, rhythm, pump and pace to help shock your muscles into growth.

Do not be scared to eat at night. The common misconception is that you will gain fat if you eat 3-4 hours prior to your bed time. This is only true if you feed your body that fat. As long as you are achieving your daily caloric intake by the end of the night by eating muscle gaining foods you will only help ease the process of gaining muscle weight and help yourself recover.

Window Dressing from the Outside Looking In

Window coverings are important to the overall look and feel of a room, of course, but when designing window treatments, don’t forget to take into consideration what your overall design will look like from the outside of your home.

As a general rule, window coverings should all be of a similar coloring, which will significantly improve the look of your home’s exterior. For instance, a house with a blue-curtained window on one side and one with yellow curtains on the other won’t look harmonious from a curbside viewpoint.

Your window dressing colors should also harmonize with the home’s outside color scheme. For instance, white-lined draperies are generally too light for dark-painted exteriors, while small printed designs, such as white on white, can be effective for adding greater interest to the outside view of a plain house.

Draperies lined with light pale yellow make a house glow at night. If that’s your desired effect, even sheer white or lace panels can be tinted with a pale yellow dye. If you use a patterned material, lining patterned window coverings with a heavy lining fabric stops the pattern from shining through at night when the lights are on.

For privacy without bulky fabrics, etched or stained glass windows can also be great investments. You can learn the art of stained glass fairly easily, and though the stained glass windows my husband and I made for our home may not be perfect, those imperfections make them more special to us than the ones we had professionally made.

Incorporating jewels into windows adds sparkle and rainbow-like effects to a room. Etched glass designs, made with rubberized stencil paper and sandblasting, is easier to do than creating stained glass windows. Etched windows look great from the street, adding an extra touch of elegance and class to the exterior appearance of your home.

Creating great-looking rooms that make people feel warm and happy is an important part of decorating, but no matter what style of home you live in, you can greatly improve its overall allure by also paying special attention to how your window treatments look from the street.

Professors – Separate Your ‘University Self’ From Your ‘Entrepreneurial Self’ – Tips and Suggestions

If you are a professor (and I’m assuming you are since you’re reading an article that starts with the word ‘professors’), then you might have a question similar to this one:

I am interested in developing a line of teaching tools that come from my experience teaching graduate students and faculty.  In developing teaching tools or publications that grow out of a university career, how do you carefully separate your business self from your faculty self?  Can you do both at once?

This is such a wonderful question and is one that many faculty members may have pondered in one form or another as they think about various aspects of their career and how they can develop ‘deliverables’ from their work that could be taken to a larger market or audience.  From my own experience – doing this very thing – here are some recommendations:

  1. Establish a company that is separate from your personal ‘self.’  You need to set up a separate entity for everything you are doing related to your teaching tools (or other ideas or products that will spin off of this project). You will need a checking account that is just for your company as well as designating a credit card for this. You can start at as a DBA rather than incorporating, but I wouldn’t wait too long on that.  This is definitely a tip where ‘sooner rather than later’ is the watch-phrase.

  2. Begin to think about yourself separately. You have your university self and you have your entrepreneurial-separate-from-the-university self. Designate times when you are working on your entrepreneurial projects – and see it as separate time and as a separate part of your life and work. Avoid working on your entrepreneurial projects while at the university (writing, making phone calls, or whatever) but rather work on it at home. It’s not that university folks don’t frequently work on their college work at home – we all do, however, going the other direction is what you want to avoid. People are a little testy in the academy when someone shines – let alone when someone displays an entrepreneurial sense and then, heaven-forbid, actually makes money from it.

  3. Avoid talking about your teaching tools, books, manuals, consulting, etc. with others at the university.  While you may be very excited about what you’re doing, others may be jealous either of what you’re doing or just the fact that you’re excited about it. There’s no need to get others worked up unnecessarily. You want to stay under the radar – not secretive, not sneaky by any means – just under the radar. Announcing what you’re doing (which tends not to be most faculty members’ styles anyway) is not going to help you in any way.

  4. Find others – nearby or far away – who ARE excited and DO want to know what you’re doing and talk with them about your projects. The beauty today is that we can find MasterMind members/colleagues/supporters anywhere in the world.

So, if you are someone in higher education with ideas that you know would find an audience beyond the academy, take this suggestions to heart.

Why Ceramic Tiles Are Popular With Indoor Decorations

Ceramic tiles are very popular with indoor decorations. This is because they are able to transform the decor, setting the right tone. Traditionally, they were popular for covering floors and walls. The tiles have a host of purposes and you will find them being used to create wonderful art on chimneys. Also, they create amazing corners which enhance the decor.

There are ceramic tiles that come with a greater resistance to external factors. These tiles are mostly painted and glazed. They can withstand moisture and temperature changes. Apart from being easy to clean, they are cheap to install. You will find it very easy to maintain them also.

If you wish to have personalized or customized ceramic pieces, you can have them made in the unique design that you prefer. However, they are mostly produced in masses making them very similar and standard. They appear to be more dull compared to stone tiles.

Despite the above reason, they continue to be favorites of many. Their low costs has something to do with this. Thickness is the major factor that you need to consider when you are installing ceramic tiles. Those that have a thinner size can be installed using adhesive. Some tiles come with an uneven surface.

You will be in a position to correct this. Using mortar will enable you to make the tiles more even. You can also correct the problem mechanically. Here, you will engage a chisel where with a few moves, your floor tiles will be okay. This mechanical method is for higher spots on the tiles.

When wet, you will always experience a slippery surface when you have the tile flooring. Therefore, take some precautions to avert any accidents or accidents. Grouts can get too dirty and even stained. This will make it very hard to clean them. However, by sealing the grout lines, you will be in a position to avoid all this.

Compared to natural stone models, the tiles that are ceramic are very easy to clean. Their even surfaces further enhance this fact. This makes the tiles even more popular to many households. Another place where the tiles are popular for this reason is in public institutions, medical facilities and other places where all must be kept sterile.

It is hard to imagine that in the past, the tiles were considered a luxury. Their beauty was not recognized as much as their other purposes and functions. They were used for mosaic flooring and mural works.

The tiles were and still remain highly versatile. This is evident in the Islamic tile work which displays a lot for us to admire. The tiles will be present in their;

* Temples
* Palaces
* Public buildings
* Upper class homes

This amazing use of tile by the Arabs inspired the European tile revolution. This revolution can clearly be seen in the decorations of their gardens and courtyards. Tile works are a huge spectacle as tourists flock places like the Moorish remnants of Spain to behold sights never seen before. They are truly exquisite.

The Magician of Still Life Baroque Painting – Jan De Heem

Jan Davidszoon de Heem, Jan Davidsz, or de Heem, better known as Jan de Heem, was born on April 17, 1606, in a Dutch family of undistinguished painters at Utrecht. He specialized in still life Baroque painting in both, Dutch and Flemish genres. Jan’s father Jan de Heem and brother David Davidszoon de Heem were only average artists. Though, David de Heem the Elder could not establish himself as a great artist, his early training laid the essential foundation for Jan de Heem’s remarkable career. The painter’s second coach was pioneering Dutch painter Balthasar van der Ast, who taught him painting shell life, fruits, and vegetables. During 1625-29, Jan resided in the city of Leiden, Netherlands, and learnt painting under artist David Bailly during the last year of his stay there. During this phase, in 1626, the artist married Aeltjn van Weede.

During 1635 to 1637, Jan became a member of the painter’s guild of Antwerp and was by now being counted among the bourgeoisie of the city. In the beginning, his style carried certain similarities with that of Dutch painter Aelbert Cuyp, for instance, his painting in the Gotha Art Gallery in Germany. As he advanced in his career however, Jan created a niche for himself through his uncanny ability to capture the artistic subtlety of vegetated state (fruits and vegetable) and life (beautiful insects and animals of land and sea), alike. His works did not merely revolve around vain artistry rather they often conveyed moral lessons embedded in them, beautifully. His celebrated works graced various museums and castles worldwide, including the museum of Amsterdam (1640), Langford Castle (1645), the Belvedere of Vienna (1648), the museum of Berlin (1650), art museum Alte Pinakothek (1653), the State Hermitage Museum at St. Petersburg (1655), and the art gallery of Brussels (1668).

Through all these exhibitions through Europe, Jan married for the second time, to Anna Ruckers, in 1643. His two marriages bore him nine children in all, of which three, David Janszoon de Heem, Cornelis de Heem, and Jan de Heem, went on to become painters. His sons’ works had such similarity with his own works that they were very difficult to discriminate. After his long stay in Antwerp until 1667, Jan went back to Utrecht, for a brief spell of three years. At the time of invasion by French King Louis XIV, he left for Antwerp in 1971 to remain there for the rest of his life. The exact date of his death is still disputed although, he is said to have breathed his last around April 26, 1684.

Top Attractions in Paris

Paris, France is the home of European refinement and love. Fashion, historical culture, and overindulgence seem to be around every turn. While there are lots of things to do in Paris, there are five attractions everyone must see at least once when they visit Paris.

Eiffel Tower

Built in 1889, the Eiffel Tower is the icon of Paris. It was identified as tribute to the end of the French Revolution, but today it is one of the most well-known and most recognizable buildings in the world.

The magic of the Eiffel Tower can truly be felt when you venture to the top to get a spectacular view of Paris. Going to the top of the Tower right before sunset provides the best views. Please do not try to take the stairs. You can reach the first two levels of the observation decks by foot, but why set for that when you can ride the elevator to the very top. Somehow the sweat and gasps for breath as you hike up the flights of stairs steps from the romantic mood of the Eiffel Tower but there are the odd fitness gurus who attempt the walk or even run up. After it gets dark, you can see the lights on the Tower twinkle in the twilight. Lights go off at 2 am, so be sure to catch a glimpse before then.

The Louvre is a top attraction in Paris and one of the most famous art museums in the world. Do not make the mistake of thinking you can see it in a day. It will likely take you three days to peruse the famous art work, and take in the majesty of the Louvre.

The Louvre is home to famous art like the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. Be sure not to miss a trip to the Louvre on your next visit to Paris.

Champs Elysees

The Champs Elysees is a famous stretch of road that goes through the center of Paris. It starts at the Arc de Triomphe and goes out to the Place de la Concorde and is lined with shops, caf├ęs, and 5 star hotels.

Bring comfortable shoes since you'll want to walk down this avenue to get the full experience. Christmas and New Years are favorite times to visit the Champs Elysees for the lights and hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Seine River

The Seine river winds through the center of Paris. Taking one of the available river cruises is a popular way to see the many sights of Paris. Take a cruise at night to see the lights of Paris – it's a whole different cruise to see the city at night.

It's also fun to walk along the banks of the Seine river. Among all the popular buildings, art, and monuments, you'll find small stands where people sell tourist items and Paris memorabilia.

Take a short train ride to Versailles to visit the Chateau of Versailles, one of the largest castles in the world and home to the King. The Chateau de Versailles has more than 700 rooms, 1250 fireplaces, 2000 windows, 67 staircases, and over 1,800 acres of gardens. It is a magnificent home which has now been transformed into a museum. You can take a tour of the castle or walk the grounds yourself. There are also restaurants and outdoor restrooms available for tourists.

When vacationing in Paris, stay at Le Meridien Etoile set on the Seine River, a stones throw from the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre. This hotel features elegant rooms, fantastic room service, and the best location in Paris.

These five attractions are only a small sampling of the variety of fun, interesting, and culturally educating things to do while in Paris.

7 Factors to Know Before You Texture Your Next Plastic Injection Mold

Plastic injection molding is a good high volume production method. All too often, these parts start to look the same even though they are made by different companies. How can you make your parts stand out from the competition? One answer is to use texture on your parts. What is texture? Texture is a change in the surface of the mold that breaks up the smooth surface with different types and sizes features. Features can be bumps, sharp cut, sand-like pits or any number of other types of geometry. This is one of the final steps when finishing a plastic injection mold. Texture can enhance the value of a plastic part if done with careful consideration.

Texture often helps provide a grip or reduce the gloss of the finished part. These functions can enhance the appeal and usability of the product. In this article let us start looking at seven different reasons to have texture on a part. I will discuss each of these so you can see the what value texture may have on your next project.

One of the most cited reasons for texture is to provide grip. Texture is commonly used to provide more grip especially on tools and controls. Smooth plastic can be slippery, especially when wet. Texture can create edges where the grip will be more positive. Texture can also serve as a visual communication tool. By placing texture in certain areas you can tell the user where the part is meant to be grasped. Texture can complement larger features such as nubs and serrations.

Texture tends to break up light and reduce gloss. Depending on the application, some parts should have a matte appearance. Putting texture on a surface breaks it up the surface which scatters light reflected. Good quality texture makes parts look professional and less like cheap plastic.

When using glass or other filler in plastic, texture can be used to hide the filler from being seen on the surface. In some parts it is undesirable for the filler in the plastic to come to the surface. In many cases this can be mitigated by using the correct process or by using less filler. When this is not the case, texture can help by allowing the glass to flow to the surface only in small areas which are camouflaged by the texture.

Often in plastic parts, ribs are used to make a part stronger without much added weight. Sometimes using ribs results in sink marks appearing on the outside which detract from the quality of the product. Especially when a part is designed with thick ribs, texture can hide the resulting sink marks. By breaking up the surface, the divot formed by the sinking of the material is less noticeable.

Another reason to use texture is to hide parting lines. On smooth surfaces, parting lines show up easily because they break the otherwise smooth surface. With texture, the parting line is easier to hide because it does not stand out as much. In some cases, parting lines look like cracks which the customer could mistake for a broken part. Most manufacture find ways to make sure the customers do make that kind of mistake.

One of the more artistic uses of texture makes the plastic appear to be wood, leather or other material. This type of texture is particularly desirable when trying to cut costs by making more expensive parts out of plastic. While texture may not hide everything, good texture may be enough to look like the original material. Even if it is recognizable as plastic, many customers will appreciated that it does not look like every other plastic part out there.

To preserve the look of your product, texture can hide minor damage. On items that are likely to scratch or dent, texture can help cover up minor imperfections. This can keep the product looking new longer and enhance the reputation of the product.

Now that we have discussed what texture is used for, let us look at how texture is made. Textured features can be produced by methods like acid etch, abrasive blasting, laser or by hand. Laser and hand methods allow for the most flexibility in that they can create a wide variety of texture from simulated wood to custom texture. Blasting and acid etch produce more uniform looking textures which are better for reducing gloss.

Before the next plastic mold project you undertake, look at these factors to help you get an edge on your competition and give you at nicer product.

Painting Business Plan – 9 Tips For Creating A Killer Business Plan

The ideal “painters marketing plan” should include these following components

1.) Finding All the Painting Customers You Can Handle. If you know how to do this you got it made and you can make as much money as you want. Whether a small, 1 to 2-man painting operation or a painting company that has a large painting crew, you can make it happen when you know how to find customers.

2.) Knowing How To Estimate Paint Jobs – for maximum profits, this is the second power stroke that should be in a painters marketing plan. When you know how to get as close to the “threshold of pain” as you can get, (the maximum you can charge someone before price resistance kicks in) whether residential or commercial, you can MAX your profits.

3.) Customer Retention – just how much is a painting customer worth to you? When you know that, you will really do whatever it takes to hang on to them. Finding new customers is not always as easy as painting for the existing ones. If they run out of things to paint over time, how many “referrals” can they give you? Why wait 10 years for them to call you again when you can be painting for their family and friends right now?

4.) Go the Extra Mile – always do a great job and even do a little more to please your customers. This gets you more repeat business and gets them talking about your painting service. And “word-of-mouth” advertising also kicks in, which is the BEST form of advertising there is!

5.) Thank You Cards – sending out thank you cards after every job completed “shows professionalism” and creates more business for us house painters. Plus they see your contact info again and will put it on file for future use.

6.) Customer Rewards – reward your loyal painting customers who give you lots of repeat business and especially those who refer you to others. Surprise them with a gift card for their favorite restaurant maybe.

7.) A Painting Business Newsletter – these are considered the BEST way to stay connected to your customers. E-mail newsletters are the easiest to send out. Physical mail newsletters get better response than digital ones. Using both in tandem is a winner. The idea is to “stay connected” and never let a customer lose your contact info. That could mean losing out on a $10,000 job maybe or even MORE!

8.) Word-of-mouth – again, this is by far the best form of advertising. Do everything you can to get your customers buzzing about your painting company (in a good way of course) and recommending you to new painting customers. This is the number one thing a painting business owner should incorporate in their painters marketing plan. It’s like having a small private army of affiliates selling your goods for you.

9.) Offer Your Painting Customers A Referral Fee. Offer them a 10% – 20% commission for any new business they get you. This could be like putting “gas on a fire” for you. I’ve never had to pay anyone for referrals but it’s an idea I thought I would mention anyway.

How to Refine Gold From Your Business Scraps and Make Money

Of all the minerals, gold is probably the more useful thanks to its diversity of special properties. Gold conducts electricity very well, it does not tarnish, it melts at low temperatures making it very easy to work, it can be drawn into wire, it can be hammered into thin sheets and it alloys with many other metals.

Gold is used in jewellery for its wonderful colour and brilliant lustre, but it can be found also in many products that we use in our everyday life. Laptops, phones, cameras and many other devices use gold to connect components.

When thinking about conductors, most people picture copper, probably because it’s the metal that is commonly used. Silver is actually the best conductor, followed by gold. Silver, however, tarnishes quickly when in contact with air. Copper is cheaper than precious metals, but it’s also much slower in transporting electrons. In the world of computing and communications, speed is more important than cost, so the use of gold has become a standard.

The beneficial material properties of gold include outstanding resistance to corrosion, the ease with which it can be worked and high thermal and electrical conductivity. In conditions under which most other metals either tarnish or corrode away, gold remains inert and extremely durable.

For electronic applications, the resistance of gold to environmental effects is perhaps its most important property as it assures that the technical performance of gold wires or gold electroplating remain essentially unaltered with time.

In general, the more sophisticated the equipment and the greater the need for reliability, the greater is the requirement to exploit the advantages of gold as a material. This means that in telecommunications, computers, automotive electronics and defence systems where safety is critical, gold is indispensable. The importance of high quality and reliable performance justifies the high cost.

Gold’s many qualities make it the metal of choice for a wide variety of industries.

Electronic parts

Electronic components made with gold are highly reliable. Gold is used in connectors, switch and relay contacts, soldered joints, connecting wires and connection strips.

Edge connectors used to mount microprocessor and memory chips onto the motherboard and the plug-and-socket connectors used to attach cables all contain gold. The gold in these components is generally electroplated onto other metals and alloyed with small amounts of nickel or cobalt to increase durability.

In phones, most of the gold is in the SIM card, the main board and the smaller components on the back of the LCD screen.

Gold is being used for fillings, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances. Gold is a bio-compatible metal, meaning it can be placed in contact with a person’s body and not cause harm to one’s health. It was much more generously used in dentistry up until the late 1970s. The sharp run-up of gold prices at that time motivated the development of substitute materials. However, the amount of gold used in dentistry is starting to rise again. Some motivation for this comes from concerns that less inert metals might have an adverse effect on long-term health.

Many parts of every space vehicle are fitted with gold-coated polyester film. This film reflects infrared radiation and helps stabilize the temperature of the spacecraft. Without this coating, dark coloured parts of the spacecraft would absorb significant amounts of heat.

Gold is also used as a lubricant between mechanical parts. In the vacuum of space, organic lubricants would volatilize and they would be broken down by the intense radiation beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Gold has a very low shear strength, and a thin film of gold between critical moving parts serves as a lubricant – the gold molecules slip past one another under the forces of friction and that provides a lubricant action.

The visor on the helmet of an astronaut’s space suit is coated with a very thin film of gold. This thin film reflects much of the very intense solar radiation of space, protecting the astronaut’s eyes and skin.

Gold has many uses in the production of glass. The most basic use in glassmaking is that of a pigment. A small amount of gold, if suspended in the glass when it is annealed, will produce a rich ruby colour.

Gold is also used when making specialty glass for climate-controlled buildings and cases. A small amount of gold dispersed within the glass or coated onto the glass surface will reflect solar radiation outward, helping the buildings stay cool in the summer, and reflect internal heat inward, helping them stay warm in winter.

How to refine gold from scraps

So just how much precious metal do you have gathering dust, and more importantly, what’s the best way to take advantage of the possible gold mine at your fingertips?

Electronic products are one of the bigger users of gold. There’s a lot of obsolete electronics out there with TVs, computers, phones having lives of 5 years or less.

The key is to remember that with the mass proliferation of electronic devices also comes the massive build-up of electronic waste. It’s e-waste that can easily end up as a huge burden on the environment if each unit is not discarded properly. At the moment, more than 80 per cent of e-waste ends up in landfills, making it a pretty serious environmental issue.

In addition to this, most of the times, the gold is bound up with a lot of other hazardous chemicals so it’s always a good idea to ask a professional precious metal refiner for help.

The key ingredient to maximizing the obvious potential of electronic waste is proper recycling and extraction. According to the American Environmental Protection Agency, “Experts estimate that recycling 1 million cell phones can recover about 24 kg (50 lb) of gold, 250 kg (550 lb) of silver, 9 kg (20 lb) of palladium, and more than 9,000 kg (20,000lb) of copper.”

Many businesses don’t realise that they can be leveraging scrap gold to their advantage, and all they need is a specialist precious metal refiner to take care of this on their behalf, and ensure that they are getting the best possible price for their precious materials.

It is important for manufacturers to be aware of procedures in their processes which may generate precious metal scrap suitable for recycling.

Opening A Business Without Marketing Skills Can Be Dangerous To Your Bank Account!

Think about how you’re going to market your business. And remember that marketing is more than ads in newspapers, TV, and internet.

Some business owners fall into the trap of thinking that because their business is in a busy part of town they will succeed. I have news for you.

Just because your business is in a busy part of town and has a bunch of traffic walking by does not mean that you will have customers.

I am in internet marketing, I have had websites that pull in only 1000 visitors a month with great success and I have seen others that have had 3000+ visitors a day on their website and was making only $500 a month.

So don’t ever believe that if more eyes see your business that you will make money. Big advertisers want you to believe that so they can suck money out of your pockets.

Instead of focusing on how many people see your ads focus on the quality of the ad… Now I don’t mean the quality as in using high quality paper, super graphics or flashy websites. What I am talking about is more than that. It’s the quality of the words you are using within the ads.

There are two things you need to do to make sure that your ads are pulling in the prospects and turning them into paying customers.

The first thing is the words you use, you need to find out what words your current customers are using and start using their words within your ads. When you use your customers words exactly as they do, others like them will tune into your ads and listen to what you have to say. When you can steal the words right out of the prospects mind before they can say the words themselves, then begin to trust you.

In simple terms if the words are wrong, the ad will not pull in the numbers that it should. Get the words right and the returns will come.

The second thing you need to keep a close eye on is tracking the ads and seeing what ads are working and pulling in prospects in that way you can be sure to toss the losing ads away and only put money into the ads that actually bring in money.

It’s easy to track ads, if you are writing an ad for a magazine, put a special code at the bottom of the ad and have the prospect either bring in the ad or read the code when they call you. If you’re on the internet you can put automatic tracking code on your website to do this for you.

Make sure at the end of the day you are tracking the results and making changes so your marketing becomes stronger and stronger each day.

By honing your marking skills you will create a powerful company.

Soap Dispensers and Soap Pumps

A soap pump is a canister used to keep liquid soap in. A pump or switch is commonly found on the bottom of the canister making soap come out when pressed.

If you're looking to pick one of these up, they can be an excellent option to store soap in. They can wind up being more cost effective since you can control the amount of soap that you end up using. You can push it once, or for half a pump or two pumps, it's totally up to you.

Now when you're looking to pick up a soap pump, you're going to find them come in all different types of designs and sizes as well. You'll find some that you can attach to your wall and you'll find those that you just place on your sink counter. You will also notice that they are often paired up with a soap dish as well as a trash bin as it is expected you buy all of these at once if you're looking to have your bathroom match up.

You're going to want to consider the style of the soap pump that you get though. If you're going for a more regal look, get a soap pump that reflects that. There are pumps that are futuristic looking and see through too, so you may want to consider that if you want something more modern. One last thing to consider is the weight of the pump, do you want something light weight or heavy and solid?

A soap pump may just be what you need in order to give your washroom those final touches. Make sure you match it to your trash bin though. If you have any kids in the house, they may also be more prone to washing their hands if you have one of these in the house.
