Using Clay Pebbles In The Bottom Of Pots

Clay pebbles can be a very economic alternative for those with home gardens. While they may not be recommended for use in large pots due to their subpar nutrient-lifting properties, they can be quite effective when used in small pots and containers. Also, unlike other fillers clay pebbles can also be rinsed and re-washed indefinitely, usually pH neutral, and their round shape allows for ample ventilation throughout the pot, aerating the roots and preventing them from rotting.

Ideally, clay pebbles should be used with net pots, especially for flood and drain hydroponic systems as the pebbles allow for the free flow of water through the plant roots and allow the nutrients to circulate better. However, a number of gardeners also make use of clay pebbles together with soil-less pot plant blends. However although it may seem like a straightforward option to place permeable substances such as clay-based pebbles in the base of the pot to ensure that water drains away more effectively. Nevertheless although it appears as if it’s a “no-brainer” choice, doesn’t necessarily work like that due to the characteristics of the pot plant blends themselves.

Regardless of whether they are put inside growing pots or in the earth, a very important factor soils and planting blends share is the fact that once the consistency or characteristics of the soil suddenly changes (for example from potting mix to expanded clay) it results in a circumstance referred to as a perched water table. This typically takes place in the bottom of your container or pot, however, if there’s clay there you’ll be essentially setting up an artificial bottom level. Typically the soil which sits on the top of the clay pebbles will stay soaked to a certain level on top of the layer of clay pebbles following watering in the same manner as it might if it had been the base of the pot.

As soon as you irrigate a pot containing clay pebbles and potting mixture, you need to completely saturate the potting soil before the excessive water may circulate to the potting soil and in to the pebbles themselves. And when you do this, the nutrient solution has filled in all of the pores within the soil or pot plant mix which was at one time filled up with air. So dependent upon the kind of soil or blend you utilize, the saturated region may take up a substantial section of the soil/mix. Therefore, the real impact of incorporating clay pebbles will be to decrease the quantity of the growing medium which you boost the percentage of saturated to unsaturated potting mix or soil.

In any sort of pot plant media, the perched water-table is going to have a depth which is very similar for that medium. For example a saturated layer in the bottom which is 1 inch deep inside a high thin container is only going to take up a small part of the entire soil mass. However, if you placed exactly the same quantity of the same type of medium inside a broad, shallow pot measuring only a couple of inches deep, it is going to take up fifty percent of the medium.

Needless to say, there are lots of technical particulars which impact the overall performance of liquid inside containers, but over-all the only real reason to put a really shallow level of pebbles at the base of the container will be to stop the potting soil or mix from washing right out of the water drainage holes any time you irrigate (and also this has stopped being even necessary in some instances).

Coaching Baseball Pitchers – Multi-Purpose Baseball Pitching Drills to Improve Control

Learning correct baseball pitching mechanics are the first step in the making of a pitcher. Once proper mechanisms are mastered these two drills can be used to hone skill, increase concentration, build confidence, and improve control. Here are two drills that can bed used to help improve a pitchers control. The two drills are "Pitch Tracking" and the "20 X 4" Pitching Drill.

"Pitch Tracking"

Great Drill for Hitters, Catchers, and Pitchers!

The pitcher is throwing to a catcher as he normally would in pitching practice or bull-pen work. The pitcher is throwing at its normal pitching distance. The purpose of the drill is to increase a pitcher's level of concentration, to work a catcher, and to allow one batter or two batters Learn to "track" every pitch.

Variation # 1 : One Batter – Right or Left handed

C ————————————— P

B

Variation # 2 : Two Batters – One Right and One Left handed

B

C ————————————— P

B

Variation # 1 – One batter is standing in and tracking every pitch from the pitcher's hand to the catcher's mitt. The batter does not have a bat. The batter will assume his regular stance and imagine that he is holding a bat. The batter will "track" or watch the first three pitches out of the pitcher's hand until they hit the catcher's mitt, making sure to keep his head down and eyes on the ball all of the way. The batter must have a batting helmet on. The next steps to the drill are explained in the second paragraph below.

Variation # 2 – Two batters are standing in the batter's box without bats. Each batter will assume his regular stance and imagine that he is holding a bat. The batters will "track" or watch the first three pitches out of the pitcher's hand until they hit the catcher's mitt, making sure to keep his head down and his eyes on the ball all of the way. The batters must have a batting helmet on. The next steps to the drill are explained in the paragraph below.

Next the batters will swing away with their "imaginary" bats. The batters will read the location of each pitch pitcher throws and hit the ball where it is pitched. When two batters are tracking, they will do opposites. One will pull a pitch in a location that his tracking partner will hit to the opposite field.

The coach can call out a count such as 2-0, 3-1, 1-2, and 0-2 to allow the batters, pitchers, and catchers certain mind-sets in different situations.

Note: If your hitters are too young to perform this drill, have a coach to stand in. The coach may wish to wear a helmet and wear a glove for protection. This is a tough drill, but it is great for developing concentration. Make sure all batters wear helmets and other proper protective equipment.

Coaching Point: The hitters do not hold a bat. The batters will swing a "invisible" bat. They must attack and hit every pitch according to its location. This drill is great for teaching hitters to see spin and to teach them to see a pitchers release point.

"20 X 4" Pitching Drill

Improves Control & Concentration

This drill is a pitching drill in which the young pitcher works at a smooth, rather fast pace, but only throws 50-60% of normal speed. The pitcher should not be allowed to throw full speed. The objective of the drill is to teach concentration and develop great control. The pitcher has to throw 20 strikes before 4 balls are thrown. The pitcher should be allowed to perform the drill at a shorter distance at first. After several practices, the pitcher should be able to move to the regular pitching distance within. If 4 balls are thrown before 20 strikes, the pitcher must restart. Care should be taken to not overwork the pitcher. Keeping the distance short, emphasizing accuracy not speed, and making sure the pitcher is properly stretched and warmed up should prevent any chance of arm injury.

With younger players you may want to make the drill a 10-3 drill. 10 strikes must be thrown before 3 balls or the drill is restored.

How to Finish the Joint of Timber Door Frame and Masonry Walls

When frames are fixed on the door ways, a joint is formed in between the timber and masonry. This joint should be covered since timber and masonry do not bond. In buildings, different materials fixed together have joints that require to be covered. In expansion and contracting of different materials a gap will appear. Materials like glass and timber, glass and concrete, aluminum and masonry, glass and steel do not bond and thus a finish is applied on the joints.

When fixing door frames in a building, the passage should allow for a finish to cover the material joints. The design should be at least four feet. This will allow a nibs of four inches to be built on both sides of the door way. The frame is fixed in the remaining distance between the nibs. The door frame may be fixed flush on one side of the nibs. The other side may be recessed at least two inches from the nib ends. Alternately it is fixed midway on the nibs, so its recessed on both sides.

The finish to timber and masonry door frames uses architraves and quadrants. The architrave is used on the side where the door frame is fixed flush with the nibs. The quadrant is used where the frame is recessed into the nibs. The quadrant is a quarter round piece of timber. It is about three quarters of an inch thick. It is fixed at the ninety degree corner of the frame and the masonry. The architrave is flat with designs engraved on it. It is about one and a three quarters of an inch wide.

Once the door frame joint is ready for covering, the pieces of timber for finishing are measured. These are measured from the height above the floor skirting. Panel pins are used for nailing the architrave or quadrant onto the timber frame. The architrave is nailed at least one inch of the door frame. This is to allow adequate cover of the joint while exposing the frame. The quadrant is nailed right into the joint. These timber finishes are then painted or varnished for good aesthetics.

Building A Pole Building

Pole barns are built in many shape and sizes, depending on the needs of the individuals who want one built. Some people build them no larger than sheds you might store seasonal things in. Some farmers use pole buildings as barns that they use to store their farm animals in. No matter how you use them, there always a good investment. These buildings could be what persuades a home buyer into buying your home. Something else about pole barns, if you happen to run out of storage room, you can add on to them fairly easy.

You should start out your barn by excavating a nice flat surface in the area you want to build. You can generally get pole building kits through your lumber company. This kit gives charts on what size of poles’ you will need to construct your pole building. And will give you the proper spacing for the post to carry the load of the roof system. It will list the lumber you need and size of the steel that goes on the side and roof. If you already know how to build a pole barn you pretty much know what you need and where it goes.

You want to lay out where your post are going to go so you can pre dig the holes to the proper depth and put your concrete in to make the post pad. After you pour the cement into the post holes you should let the concrete set over night. In the morning you are ready to set the post. You should set the four corner post in first then pull a diagonal dimension so you have your building square. After you get the corners established you can run a string around the perimeter and use that as a guide line to set the rest of your post. After the post, are set and plum you want to start putting the banding round your post. This is done with two by fours spaced about every two foot apart and will run the length of the structure. The top banding will most likely be two by twelve planks.

After you get the banding on the sides you can set your trusses and put runners on top of the trusses to fasten your steel roof to. After the trusses are all framed in you can install the steel on the roof. Before you install the sheeting on the walls of you pole barn you will want to poor the concrete slab. Pouring the floor is much easier with the steel left off the walls. Then after your cement floor is finished you can fasten the sheeting to the side walls. Then have your overhead door installed.

Leveraging Twitter With Affiliate Marketing to Make Money

Any Successful Affiliate marketer will tell you that moderation and timing is the key to optimizing your social networking. When you establish the best times and days to post, what kind of content to provide and which audience to target, you will realize the potential of social exposure. Facebook alone has over 1.5 Billion Active Users, that’s not counting Google+, Twitter and YouTube to mention but a few. And when you learn how to leverage these audiences, you will soon see your Blogs exploding with targeted, interested visitors. But it does take time.

Google Traffic is leveraged by means of WordPress Plugins, because it’s how your Blog and/or Website get recognized by All Major Search Engines. But the question is… Which Plugins are the right ones, what kind of plugins must you install and what are their purpose? As much as I would love to, I couldn’t possibly cover all this in a single Blog Post unless I want to keep writing for a couple weeks or so. WordPress and S.E.O tactics are among the absolute favorites used by All Super Affiliate Marketers, and trust me they all use Plugins to get Hundreds of Thousands of Visitors per day. But as I have mentioned before, it takes more than just Plugins. It’s all part of a Much Larger Toolbox that you must build if you’re going to make the life changing kind of money online.

Regardless of the tools you choose to use, any tool only works as good as the person using it. Successful Online Marketing all comes down to Content, Useful and Original Content is what generates the real money online.

How to Create Useful and Interesting Content

But how do you write useful and interesting content? The best word to describe that will be knowledge, which can only be obtained through personal trial and error. You need to develop your own tactics, and that can only be done by constantly testing other concepts and compiling your own collection. As an affiliate marketer, product knowledge plays an important role which is why you need to actually purchase and use the product you intent to promote. It is the only way you will inspire curiosity with your audience, and that is a great starting point to visitor sales conversion. As you progress, your knowledge will expand because you also need to engage with other professionals within your niche. Share ideas and tactics, but try to avoid sales pitches because that is not what professional engagement is about. First you must learn as much as you possibly can, and then your content will improve accordingly.

Let’s briefly take a look at the difference between a Widget and a Plugin.

What is a Widget? – A Widget is what you mostly see on a side bar and include options like social following buttons and web-forms. Favorite widgets also include the search option on your site, recent comments and recent posts. Meta tags and Archives are also widgets used by most successful affiliate marketers. Widgets acts kind of like a guide for your visitor to view the different options provided on your Website and/or Blog.

What is a Plugin? – A Plugin is mostly a tool that runs in the background that helps with things like S.E.O and faster page rank in Google. It’s also responsible for your visitor tracking and analytic results, so you can track and optimize your visitors. A Plugin is also the professional way of cloaking your affiliate links by linking them with your primary domain. So, instead of seeing an affiliate link, the Google Spider sees a Sub-Domain to your Primary Domain which is more likely to be favoured. An excellent Link Cloaking Plugin is Pretty Link Late, and not only does it cloak your link. It also provides you with analytic results so you can see all clicks and unique visitors, this way you can determine the affiliate offer most loved by your audience.

But, all this can sound pretty confusing when you just get started. You can do all this yourself or, you can let a Professional Webmaster Do It for You. This is also an excellent option, because you can have someone build your Empire for you, while you learn to do it all yourself.

Now we all know that Google and Facebook had become the two Traffic Giants followed by YouTube. And with good reason, because we’re talking Billions of Unique monthly Visitors from the Two Giants Combined. However, wouldn’t you agree that we may have been neglecting Twitter and LinkedIn just a little?

They may not be as Huge as Facebook and Google… Yet, but trust me they are working on it! The “Trick” is to link your social profiles so when you Tweet or Re-Tweet on Twitter, it then automatically shares on sites like Facebook. The same goes for LinkedIn, when you post on this social site, it too will automatically be shared.

That is why This Twitter Plugin is so Valuable, and you can see it in Action with the Tweet-able Content at the top of this Post. It’s just One of many Methods and tactics used by all Successful Bloggers and Affiliate Marketers.

You must Never be a faceless profile, or even a picture of you beloved cat. I too love my cat very much but it doesn’t change the fact that she (Bast) is Not the one Posting On My Profiles, I am. The professional way is to have a full frontal picture of yourself, kind of like a passport photo, because audiences enjoy connecting if they see a person.

Complete Your Bio, and add your projects and interests. Get your social profile as professionally complete as you possibly can because that is how you get recognized as a Professional. This also applies to your Blog, allow your audience the assurance that you’re real and offer them the solutions they are looking for.

Allow me to place exclamation on the fact that these are Tools And Training, none of these are Magic Buttons that will turn your PC into an ATM. There is nothing like that in existence, and I know because I used to be a lead contender in the race to find that illusive “Magic Button”.

Making Money Online is an Art, and it is a combination of Methods, Tactics, Programs and Tools that form part of a much larger machine.

The first tip that you have to consider is the main and secondary reasons for wanting the paint job. You might have a lot of exterior house ideas in mind but not knowing your primary and secondary goals can lead you to an unharmonized look. So before you go shopping for your cans of paint or even before you select the color scheme to use, make sure that you know your goals. Do you want simply to retouch your house’s old paint? Do you want to live up the facade? Do you want to change the exterior theme? Do you want your home to have a livelier look and feel? Another crucial tip when considering exterior house paint ideas is the kind or paint to choose. Exterior house paint ideas is not just about the color; it should also be about the quality and durability of paint. Choosing durable and quality paint does not only ensure your home surface’s protection from the elements but it can also save you from the need to repaint in a few years time.

Once you have completed your exterior house paint ideas, it is now time to deal with another big issue – who will do the job? If you are a DIY person then taking the job yourself can be an option to take only if you are skilled in that particular area. Now, if you are not, it would be wiser to hire professionals who can do the job expertly. Hiring someone would mean money but creating a well-done exterior look for your home is well worth it every time. Follow these exterior house paint ideas so you can have fun with your home project.

Has the Real Estate Market Bottomed Out in Plano TX?

Whenever I write a column, I always want to be optimistic. Optimism is a human condition. That is where we all want to be. You will see some numbers from January that would seem to indicate there is a light at the end of tunnel. Now, there is nothing I would like more than to tell you that things are looking up and 2005 is here again ! We are not there yet..

Remember the old saying that “liars figure and figures lie.” For example, what the federal government and the National Association of Realtors do not include in their reports is the “shadow inventory.” This is comprised of literally hundreds of thousands of foreclosed homes that have not been relisted yet. Believe it or not the lenders don’t always get these marketed immediately.

. Another significant omission from the stats is the “expired and terminated listings” where owners have removed their listings waiting to relist when the market improves. So, the Plano home inventory and the days on market stats are skewed and look better than they really are. See below.

We all know the real estate market has been in the toilet for the past few years, and that nobody’s buying. It’s tough to buy a house when you have no money and no one will offer you credit. Having said this it must be noticed that north central Texas has tumbled the least (although Collin County had the largest increase in foreclosures last month over Denton and Dallas counties). Prosper homes, McKinney homes and Frisco homes statistics are similar to Plano homes. We know that markets that hold up the best in a recession are generally the first to rebound. So, eventually Plano may lead the way.

The home market is usually cyclical and history tells us it is usually 3 to 4 years. We know that half of California and Michigan would move to Texas if they could sell their present homes. And many will. In addition, there are a lot of buyers sitting on the side lines looking for further declines in home prices. So, we know there is a lot of pent up demand out there. When demand finally surpasses supply we will be on the upswing.

What this all means to Plano-ites if you are thinking of selling…hold off and if you are thinking of buying proceed cautiously and drive a hard bargain. To learn more go to http://billremington.com

The truth is that no one will be able to forecast the bottom. We will only know this in hindsight as we begin to recover. As they say on Fox news channel, “we report…you decide. Here are the January stats for Plano homes in Texas:

New listings…379 down from 503 (-25%) in 08′

Closed sales…141 down from 219 (-36%) in 08′

Median sales prices…$234k down from $250k ( -9%) in 08′

% asked vs. sold price 92% down 1.3% in 08′

Average days on market…98 down from 112 (-12%) in 08′

Plano Home Inventory…988 down from 1499(-34%) in 08′

How Can I Tell It’s an Alloy Wheel That’s on My Car?

Have you ever been conned by a wheel seller and bought fake wheels thinking that they were alloy wheels? You are not alone. This is a practice that has become very common as technology evolves. The funny thing is that they look so much alike that you cannot tell which is which. However, you do not have to worry anymore. Here are the methods you can use to prove that those you are buying are actually alloy.

Metal Wheels have with time emerged to be the best wheels in the market. They are the most preferred wheels by many motorists due to their outstanding qualities. You probably have them on your car and cannot replace them with any other type of wheels. Some of the qualities of these wheels that make them stand out in the wheel manufacture industry include;

· Light weight which makes them more efficient

· Strength which makes them withstand great pressure and exposure

· Good heat dissipation

· Variety of designs and

· Great appearance

These are the major characteristics that make up a good wheel and alloy wheels happen to have them.

Many wheel stores have emerged and claimed to sell alloy wheels, but as technology has improved, so has the knowledge of manufacturers who make fake ones. Thus, a great problem has risen where motorist have bought wheels branded as alloy but they wear out quicker than supposed. Maybe, you have been a victim.

The big question that every motorist asks is; how do I tell that the wheels on my car are actually Metal Alloy?

There are a number of proven ways to determine whether the wheels on your vehicle are alloy or steel.

· Acid test

Metal alloy wheels are made of an alloy of aluminum and another metal. Aluminum is not corrosive unlike magnesium. You have to buy an acidic solution for this test and choose a hidden spot at the back of the wheel. You don’t have to worry when carrying out this test because, if it’s an alloy, no corrosion will take place. However, if corrosion happens to occur, the hidden spot will be invisible. Take some amount of the acid and apply it on the chosen spot. If it’s an alloy wheel, it will not corrode but if it is not, corrosion will take place. This will prove that it indeed is not a metal alloy wheel.

· The Magnet Check

Another method used is the magnet check. Aluminum is non-magnetic. Steel on the other hand is very magnetic. Get a magnet and bring it close to the supposed alloy wheel. If the magnet sticks, the wheel is steel and not an alloy. The reverse will also be true. However, this is not a complete proof that the wheel you have is an aluminum alloy wheels. This is because, magnesium also is non-magnetic. This is why the acid test needs to be done.

· The Visual check

This is where you use your eyes and the knowledge you have to check the wheels. If the rim is entirely painted black and it doesn’t appear like an aftermarket wheel, it definitely is not alloy. Another way of telling by visual checking is verifying if the wheel has a hub cap. If it’s there, this is not an alloy either. Most alloy wheels do not use hub caps.

There might be other ways to tell an alloy wheel from a steel wheel, but these are the most outstanding ones. However, if you are not sure about the wheels after checking, it’s always advisable that you visit your car manufacturer or consult your mechanic. Mechanics know a lot. They have worked with fake and real wheels for long and they can tell the difference by just a visual check.

The above stated; Acid test, the magnet check and visual check are the methods which you can apply to determine whether the wheels you have alloy. The acid test is the best proof and the most appropriate of the three.

Make sure you get the right alloy wheels next time and enjoy your rides!

Improve Your Eye Health With Natural Remedies

Eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, detached retina or myopia all come from weakness and inflammation in the tissues that compose and surround the eye. Most doctors don’t really know what to say to you on how to improve your eye health. They don’t know how you can strengthen and protect your eyes from becoming disease or if you have an eye disease how to improve your condition.

In 1985, I developed detached retina in my right eye and my left eye had weakness.

The day I went to the eye specialist in Palo Alto to see why part of my vision was dark, I didn’t go home for 3 day. The very moment the doctor examine my eyes, he said “You need to go to the hospital right now and have surgery tonight.” Was I scared? Definitely!

Was the surgery a success? Yes it was. But not until I went through a 5 hour laser surgery procedure, had a needle pushed into my eye as I looked straight at it, and had an in house laser procedure of 50 pulses.

Months later I asked my eye doctor what I could do to improve my eye health and to keep them strong. There was silence and my question was never answered. He just didn’t know.

Since that time, I become a nutritionist and have learn many things about keeping eyes healthy and I plan to write an e-report so that I can pass that information on to many of you that want to avoid losing your good eye sight as you become older.

Right now I want to give you only one thing you can do for your eye health. I want to give you a formula on how you can make your own eye drops made out of MSM. As you recall in the last newsletter, I mentioned MSM eye drops that you can use it in your ears to keep them flexible. Well, MSM eye drops are the best drops you can use in your eyes to:

– strengthen them

– prevent glaucoma

– prevent cataract,

– keep them young

– dissolve mucus accumulation

– keep your eyes moist

– correct dryness

– relieve strain

– relieve red eye

– clear up pink eye

– clear up sties

– clears up eye infections

– tie up free damaging free radical

– tie up destructive proteins

The best part about MSM eye drops is that they are not addictive like many of the eye drops that you find at the drug store.

Look, can you ask any more of this eye drop solution? Yes you can. The second best part about MSM eye drops is that they are really cheap. You can buy it already make for around $5. Of course, you only get one ounce. The shipping cost more than the product.

Here’s what I buy when I make it myself:

– a 2 or 4 ounce brown eye dropper bottle

– torpedo MSM tablets of 1000 mg per tablet

– saline solution that I use for my contact lens and that’s it.

Here’s how to make it:

– Boil the eye dropper bottle with stem and rubber top for 10 minute

– After boiling, rinse out the inside of the bottle, stem, and rubber cap with distilled water.

– Fill the bottle with 80% saline solution.

– Add two to four MSM torpedoes making it 2000 to 4000 mg.

– Let the MSM dissolve and it’s ready for use.

Only one warning, just start with only two torpedoes. Then test it on your eye by dropping one drop into your eye. You will feel a little bit of a sting. Keep adding a torpedo until the sting is not too severe or to slight. I use 4 torpedoes since I am use to the sting. I also add a drop of 98% Aloe Vera gel, since aloe has an antibacterial property and it promotes cell regeneration. Of course, adding aloe makes it sting more but this will not damage your eye. Just go slow and add mall amount of aloe until you get the effect you can live with.

This is a real nice eye drop and excellent for your eye health. It is best to make it yourself, since it can be done when ever you need it. I use it all the time before I put my contacts lens, when I have my contacts on, and after I take them off. Have fun doing this and if you have children show them what you are doing.

Ideal Food Pyramid

I would like for you to join me in challenging an untrue belief that I am sure like me you all grew hearing was true. The information featured in the traditional USDA food pyramid – the model widely disseminated in the last few decades – is archaic and unwise. Anchored by carbohydrates (with a recommendation of 6-11 servings), the pyramid also advises two to three servings of meat and dairy – in essence, it is a diagram on how to clog your system. Even the most recent revised version, which features several improvements, fails to address the faults of an animal-based diet.

The ideal food pyramid I would like to highlight emphasizes a plant-based diet, particularly water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables. These cleansing foods should constitute the majority of your diet. Here’s what the ideal food pyramid should look like:

70% Live Foods – Making up a combination between 80% vegetables (Asparagus, broccoli, carrots, spinach, green bell peppers, celery, cucumber, lettuce, sprouts, wheatgrass, & fresh herbs) and 20% fruit (Ideally non-acid producing low-sugar fruits such as avocados, lemons, limes, tomatoes, & grapefruits). Vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. If the body is balances, fruit is a great live food – in moderation which should only be ate on an empty stomach.

10% Vegetable and Fish Proteins – Making up a combination of nuts, seeds, and legumes (Almonds, brazil nuts, hazel nuts, lentils, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, & sunflower seeds) and ideally deep sea fish such as salmon, tuna, halibut, ahi, swordfish, & snapper. Proteins support tissue building.

10% Complex Carbohydrates – Making up a combination of ideally non-stored whole grains such as basmati and jasmine rice, buckwheat, quinoa, millet, spelt, kamut, non-yeast breads & needles. Grains provide fiber, which decreases toxicity.

Caring For a Pregnant Akita

Caring for an Akita bitch during pregnancy is basically commonsense. She should be watched carefully and made as comfortable and happy as possible. You should ensure that she has a dry bed, ample clean drinking water and regular feeds of good quality. For the first five weeks she will probably behave quite normally. She may have her “off” days. She may be extra hungry. She may display a slight change in temperament and be more careful how she carries herself, but so long as she is obviously healthy and happy, that is all that matters.

As soon as you suspect that she is pregnant, it is a good idea to contact your vet so he can enter the date of the expected birth in his diary and monitor the bitch’s progress. Akitas do not carry much water with their puppies, nevertheless a considerable amount of weight will have to be carried as the weeks progress. It is generally not advisable to give lots of extra food in the early weeks. Experience has taught us that overloading a bitch with food will put weight on her puppies, and she will also put on extra weight. This causes two problems. Firstly, she will not exercise so well, and so she will not be keeping her muscles toned up. Secondly, the puppies will be fat, which means they will be larger and will experience a more difficult passage down the birth canal. And when they are born, they will be fat and lazy.

It is far better to have an active mother and lean, vigorous puppies, who will fight to get to the teats to fill themselves with that all-important mother’s first milk. We have found the best policy is to feed a balanced diet with an increase in food after about five weeks. Naturally the future mum will be hungrier, but rest assured that whatever food you give to her she will pass on to her unborn babies before she takes it herself. She is a natural in parental care. Additives in the form of calcium and perhaps iron are a good idea, again after the five-week deadline. These days most foods are carefully balanced and numerous additives should not be needed. Indeed, the general view is that they can do more harm than good. But if the bitch suggests that she may have a deficiency, you should take her to the vet so that proper tests and analysis can be undertaken.

Akita bitches “hide” their puppies very well until at least five weeks, more often six. They may show no signs at all that they are pregnant, and this can be extremely annoying to the owners, who obviously want to know if they are to expect a litter so they can make the necessary preparations. Probably the best indication is a swelling of the bitch’s teats. From as early as three weeks these can “pop”, or enlarge slightly and become pinker in appearance. In our experience this is the only “sure” sign. Ultra-sound scanning can also give a definite diagnosis, but this is costly and sometimes the hair on the bitch’s side or underside has to be removed.

Your bitch may show signs of thickening in the rib or loin earlier, but it is most unlikely. Akita Inu bitches do not generally carry their babies across their loin like most breeds. They hide them under their ribs and then later “drop” them and carry them in the belly, rather like a cow carries its calf. Whether you observe positive signs or not, it is wise to contact your vet and book the expected date of birth into his diary so he will be available if necessary.

Seven weeks into the pregnancy, introduce the bitch to her whelping place. A suitably sized box should be prepared and the absolute minimum measurements for this would be about 4ft 6ins by 3ft. This will allow the bitch to lie fully stretched on her side. The box can certainly be larger, but not so big as to allow the puppies to crawl away from their mother and so get lost. Make sure the bitch is happy with the box and its position. After a few days she will welcome the peace, quiet and solitude of this area and so will accept it as the natural place when the time comes to give birth. If she is at all unhappy you must give in to her and make other arrangements. She probably has a good reason for not wanting things the way you do. So listen to her and adjust. She may accept the box, and then on the day of whelping, she changes her mind and wants to go somewhere else. Again, you must give in to her request. She may return to the box after she has had her first puppy, but let her decide. It is worth all the upheaval to have a happy, contented bitch who comes through her pregnancy successfully and delivers her puppies safely, without causing you – – or herself – – any undue anxiety.

Fractions and Rational Numbers – What is the Difference?

Most of us go through years of school math courses and still are confused about some basic things. For example: Why can’t you divide by zero? Why is .999… equal to 1, and not a bit less?

There are loads of these kinds of questions, that wouldn’t be a cause of frustration at all, if they were taught reasonably and clearly.

Unfortunately most of these things are supposed to be covered in elementary school, and most elementary school teachers don’t have a good understanding of basic math concepts. Instead they are supposed to teach just a collection of “skills.”

One of the simplest concepts that is usually left inadequately explained is the difference between fractions and rational numbers. Let’s see if we can clear it up now.

A fraction is a number that expresses part of a whole as a quotient of integers (where the denominator is not zero).

A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a quotient of integers (where the denominator is not zero), or as a repeating or terminating decimal. Every fraction fits the first part of that definition. Therefore, every fraction is a rational number.

But even though every fraction is a rational number, not every rational number is a fraction.

Why? Consider this:

Every integer (all the whole numbers, including zero, and their negatives….-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…) is a rational number, because it can be expressed as a quotient of integers, as in the case of 4 = 8/2 or 1 = 3/3 or -3 = 3/-1 and so on. So integers such as 4 or 1 can be expressed as the quotient of integers.

But an integer is not a fraction. 4 is an integer, but it is not a fraction. 4 is not expressed as the quotient of integers. The difference here is in the wording.

A fraction is a number that expresses part of a whole. An integer does not express a part. It only expresses a whole number.

A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a quotient of integers, or as part of a whole, but fraction is a number that is (must be) expressed as a quotient of integers, or as part of a whole – there is a difference. The difference is subtle, but it is real.

There are slightly different variations of the definition of a fraction, including, “A fraction is the ratio of two whole numbers, or to put it simply, one whole number divided by another whole number.”

That definition also shows that an integer is not a fraction, because an integer is not a ratio. It can be expressed as a ratio, but it is not a ratio in itself; it can be divided by another whole number, but it is not being divided.

In a nutshell, the fractions are a subset of the rational numbers. The rational numbers contain the integers, and fractions don’t.

Foreclosures and Its Benefits

Foreclosures:

A foreclosure happens to be a home that belongs to the bank and once was the property of the homeowner. The home was either abandoned or either handed over voluntarily to the bank. It is a series of actions in which the lender (usually a bank) tries to retrieve the balance of a loan that had been issued previously to the homeowner who is no more able to pay the principal and interest payments on their mortgage.

Although one may hear about the bank taking the property back but that is not the case because the bank never really owned the property. That is why the bank can not take back something it did not even own in the first place. There is a difference if the bank foreclosed on the mortgage or trust deed and divided the home. The lender has numerous options which it can opt for that includes the revision of payment schedule as well in order to make the loan more affordable for the homeowner or even putting the house up for auction.

Benefits of Foreclosures:

Listed below are the benefits of foreclosures:

Discounted Price:
There are a large number of foreclosed homes in various neighborhoods of United States and these properties happen to have the potential of being marked down substantially from the other properties in the same area. Foreclosures create the opportunity for someone to purchase a property at a reasonably discounted price which allows them to buy that property.

Fresh Start:
In the early 21st century, when the housing market began to decline numerous owners realized that their homes were no longer worth the amount they owned on the mortgage. For these owners, foreclosures happen to be the best option to unload a burden they can not carry anymore. Owners consider the amount of equity they have in the house (equity + value of home – mortgage debt) and if tend to be less than 25%, they rather choose to walk away.

Bargaining Power:
A prospective buyer could use the bank's possession of a foreclosed home completely to their advantage if the proper negotiating methods are followed with the right timing. This is because banks are more apt at issuing loans to the homebuyers rather than directly selling homes.

Financial institutions proceed with the aim of getting rid of the foreclosed properties for a reasonable price as soon as possible. Their goal is secure as much amount of the original loan as possible. So the longer a property is held by the bank, the odds are in favor of it considering low offers.

Appreciation:
If the savings happen to be on the acquisition side, the low foreclosed prices guarantees the probability of the buyer getting a gain on their investment in future. If the foreclosed home is sold for less amount compared to the similar properties on the same street or division, the prospect buyer's percentage increase could be more if there is a general rise in the value of all neighborhood homes.
