The Kindle Fire: Tricks for Entering Text

The Kindle Fire is much more interactive than previous Kindle models, and it’s often necessary to enter text – for example, when you search your content libraries or the web, annotate text, or fill out web forms. However, entering text on a relatively small device can be somewhat daunting. This article explains techniques and tricks that will make it much easier to enter and edit text, enhancing your enjoyment of your Kindle Fire.

Using the Kindle Fire Keyboard

When you tap a text entry field on the Kindle Fire, the onscreen keyboard automatically appears. Typing on the Kindle Fire keyboard (or on any onscreen keyboard on a relatively small device) is an art that takes practice. Some favor the hunt-and-peck method using a single index finger, while others achieve greater speed by holding the device with two hands and typing with both thumbs. In either case, the keyboard will be much larger and easier to use if you turn your Kindle sideways (its long dimension horizontal).

Note: If the screen doesn’t reorient when you turn the Kindle sideways, your screen is probably locked. To unlock it, tap the gear-shaped Settings icon on the right side of the Status Bar at the top of the screen. Then tap the Locked icon on the Quick Settings bar that appears.

The Kindle Fire customizes the keyboard according to the context in which it’s displayed. For example, if you need to enter general text you’ll see an alphabetic keyboard, while if a number is required you’ll see a numeric keyboard.

If a character has alternative forms (such as an o, which has alternative forms with a tilde, an umlaut, and so on), and if you touch the key for about a second, the Kindle displays the alternative characters in a palette above the key. To enter one of these characters, slide your finger to the character you want to insert and then lift your finger.

To type a number (or one of the punctuation characters that isn’t included on the top row) switch to the number and punctuation keyboard by tapping the 123!? key. (Tap the ABC key to return to the alphabetic keyboard.) Alternatively, you can type a number using the alphabetic keyboard by touching one of the keys on the top row of letters for about a second, and then lifting your finger.

Another way to enter a punctuation character (: / & and so on) is to touch the period (.) key for about a second, slide your finger to one of the characters that appear on the popup palette, then lift your finger.

Note that you can customize the way the keyboard works through the Kindle Fire’s general Settings screen. (Tap the gear-shaped Settings icon on the right side of the Status Bar at the top of the screen. Then tap More.)

Edit Your Typed Text

To delete all text that you’ve typed into a text field using the keyboard, simply touch and hold the Backspace key.

But what if you’ve typed a long string of characters only to discover that you made a mistake near the beginning? Rather than repeatedly tapping the Backspace key to go back to the error and then retyping all your text, you can use the Kindle keyboard’s editing features, which are explained here.

Move cursor and insert/delete: To edit at a particular position in the text you’ve typed, tap that position. A blinking cursor will appear at the position you tapped, with a marker below it. You can drag the marker to move the cursor forward or backward. Typing characters or Backspace inserts or removes text at the position of the cursor.

Select: To select text, touch a word for about a second, and on the popup menu that appears tap Select Word or Select All. The text will be highlighted and a marker will appear at either end. You can change the range of the selection by dragging a marker.

Cut or copy: To cut or copy selected text, tap it and on the popup menu choose Cut (to copy and remove the text) or Copy (to copy the text without removing it). The copied text goes into the Kindle Fire’s Clipboard.

Paste: If no text is selected, you can insert the Clipboard contents at the position of the cursor by touching the text field for about a second, and then choosing Paste from the popup menu. If text has been selected, you can replace it with the Clipboard contents by tapping the selection and choosing Paste.

Note that the Clipboard works across all built-in Kindle Fire software, as well as installed apps. So for example, if you copied text into the Clipboard while viewing a web page in the browser, you could paste it into a search field in a content library.

If the keyboard disappears at any time while you’re editing text, just tap within the text field to restore it.

Home Remodeling & Refurbishing With Electric Radiant Infrared Heat Units

A perfect solution to adding heat to a home during a construction or addition project is using radiant ceramic flat panel electric infrared heaters. The reason why electric radiant infrared flat panel heaters are efficient and cost effective to operate can be explained this way; forced heated air systems only blow warm air into the room. The room must be filled with enough warm air to make a person feel warm. But at that point the only thing that is warm is the air, but hot air rises. There is usually a difference in temperature between the air at the ceiling and the air at the floor. The space at floor level and a few inches above the floor is never comfortably warm and is usually drafty. To fill a room with heated air takes time and, the air is warmed before the person is warmed. The room cools rapidly due to cold air infiltration, and takes longer to recover. But the biggest disadvantage is that the forced air system must run longer and work hard to heat the air in the room and then reheat the room which costs the consumer more energy dollars.

Conversely, infrared radiant heating heats people and objects first by utilizing the technology of long wave electromagnetic energy. After the people and objects are warmed they release the warmth into the air which then heats the ambient air. Even if a door is opened that lets a rush of cold air into the room, radiant heating has a faster recovery time due to all the objects in the room being warmed and releasing that warmth back into the room. Even though the unit operates continuously until the thermostat turns it off, it operates at an inexpensive rate. And that cost is only incurred when the unit is running whereas a gas system is always burning a pilot light and trying to overcome drafty cold air infiltration.

TradeStation Indicators – Using Multiple Time Frames To Show Key Support and Resistance

Support and resistance are two aspects of trading that may be difficult to understand and identify for novice traders. You can increase your trading edge and have a clear understanding of these important concepts by using a TradeStation Multiple Time Frame (MTF) price action indicator.

In order to understand price action on MTF you need to use trend lines that have almost no lag on each of the following time periods: 5, 15, 20, 30, 60, 120, 240, and daily. The interaction of the MTF trend is the key to identifying on your trading chart where price actually changes direction. Support is shown when price is headed down and gets stopped and goes back up. Resistance is shown when price is headed up and gets stopped and goes back down.

Resistance will be shown on the MTF indicator when the upward trending price is too far away from the daily price line. When this happens commonly the price will start forming a consolidation or topping pattern and then reverse back down towards the daily line.

Support will be shown on the MTF indicator when the downward trending price is too far away from the daily line. When this happens commonly the price will start forming a consolidation or bottling pattern and then reverse back up towards the daily trend line.

Whenever you see the fastest price line change directions at any one of the 60, 120, 240 or daily price lines, this reaction is showing key points of support or resistance.

If you are trading on a fast time chart, anything from a 1 to 5 minute chart, and you see a consolidation pattern and are unsure about the trade direction, you should look at the MTF higher periods directional bias. These higher period biases show the highest probable direction of the next price movement. If multiple higher charts all run in a given direction, then the odds are good that the 1 minute or the 5 minute chart will resolve any indecision in that same direction.

Seeing the interaction of these different time charts and seeing where these price trend lines change direction will show the current price bouncing off of the 60 minute, 120 minute, 240 minute, and / or daily trend lines. When you see the interaction of these lines, you'll be able to confidently identify support and resistance zones.

By using Multiple Time Frame TradeStation indicators you will develop a great understanding of support and resistance and increase your trading performance.

Habits Are At First Cobwebs, At Last Cables

Habits are at first cobwebs, at last cables, goes the old saying but what is a habit, and where does it come from? It is a pattern of behavior that is frequently repeated until it becomes automatic and is a natural part of how a human mind develops. Our characters are composed of a collection of habits that can be good or bad, so we seek to establish good ones and remove the bad.

Good habits include punctuality, honesty, reliability and financial prudence. We are encouraged to develop these from childhood, but it is human to fall into error, and it is necessary to be constantly vigilant in maintaining standards. Our friends, relatives and enemies are often very helpful here in pointing out our shortcomings! Good habits are developed from discipline and practice.

For example if you are studying, and that should be a lifelong habit for all, it is important to establish a good method. Developing a structured approach, with regular study periods, revisions, rest breaks and a system of rewards when you have completed goals, works well. In other words, you should acquire good study habits. As Shakespeare put it: “… Use doth breed a habit in a man.”

This saying reminds us that habits start off frail and grow stronger with the passing of time ensnaring us before we realize it. Good habits we tend to take for granted, and it is the bad ones that worry us. Most advice on habits tends to be about how to be free of the harmful kind. Entire industries spring up around a bad habit with gurus offering all sorts of advice, pills and techniques.

In days gone by, people tended to see bad habits as temptations from devils or demons. Today we would probably think of habits as neural networks in the brain that strengthen with repeated use, and to break them we must overlay them with positive behavior — substituting good for bad. Smoking is regarded as a major bad habit and one method of control is to substitute another sucking habit such as a sweet; but this can lead to the obesity that comes from bad eating habits.

Prevention is often better than cure and not starting a habit is the best method of all for avoiding its consequences. “I wish I had never started it,” is the common cry of the smoker, drinker or drug addict. People waste large amounts of their hard earned money on a bad habit as it grows and develops, and then even more trying to be free of its tentacles. The young should resolve not to follow the “unreflecting herd” but to listen to the warnings of those who have been there, done that, and lived to regret it. There is no gain in being wise after the event.

The best method of overcoming unwanted habits is the exercise of self-control so that the habit gets its energy cut off and withers naturally. Then the cables that bind us in misery can be snapped.

Identifying The Four Major Types Of Loans

Although it may be a given for many people these days, it is still important to know something about loans when you are thinking about applying for one. In fact, most people already have one type of loan or another. There are many different kinds of loans offered by banks, credit unions, private lenders, and other financial institutions. Each loan may be subject to the specific requirements of the institution offering it and many loans are actually tailored to the particular applicant. All of this aside, there are four major types of loans that are used by consumers. Each type has a different object or focus attached.

The first major type of loan is the personal loan. These are the loans that you would obtain from a bank or credit union as an individual. At the same time, there is some overlap between personal and small business since the purposes of each may often coincide. For example, you may need a personal loan to fund a new small business opportunity. A personal loan may simply be a loan that you receive in order to pay for a necessary expenditure like replacing a major appliance, paying bills, or getting a vehicle. Personal loans are also used to consolidate debt.

A second type of loan is the home or mortgage loan. This is the category of loans relating to new home purchasing, but may also deal with using your existing home mortgage as a form of collateral to get a loan for other purposes. Like other types of loans, these loans have specific requirements and qualifications organized by the lender, which must be met by loan applicant. Home loans are long-term expenses. You need to keep this in mind and plan accordingly and take other expenses that will be included so you have a clear idea of your payments. Now a mortgage loan may also include those who already have homes but want to take a loan out on the mortgage or house, using this as collateral to secure the desired amount. There are specific requirements involved in these situations as well and there is risk involved since you are putting up your home as collateral.

The third major type of loan is the automotive loan. This is a narrower category since it deals exclusively with the purchase of vehicles. Everyone needs a car or some other means of transportation in today’s world. More importantly, they need something that is reliable and will get them where they need to go. Cars-even used cars-are expensive and most of us do not have the money to go and buy one outright. Therefore, auto loans are required to purchase a vehicle. Automobile dealerships typically provide financing options for auto loans via participating lenders. Again, there will be requirements that you must meet like credit rating or income level to qualify for the loan. Different lenders have different policies regarding auto loans so you will have to investigate them individually to find out if you are eligible.

The fourth major type or category of loan is the education or student loan. This category includes both students who have gone from high school to college or university as well as adult professionals who have chosen to pursue further educational opportunities to increase their marketability in their chosen profession. Since education and training can have a direct effect upon financial success, many banks, credit unions, and government-sponsored financial aid programs are growing in numbers to provide opportunities for those seeking educational finance assistance.

These four types of loans are a part of our everyday lives. At some point, most of us will receive one or more of these loans if we hope to have a car, a house, an education, or take care of personal matters beyond our current financial ability to resolve. It can pay to have a better understanding of these different loans so we can make the best decisions when a loan becomes necessary.

Designing the Interior of a Retail Store

Retail has long been powerful and one thing we know is that there are a lot of different approaches to designing the interior layout of a store. However, there are some common design strategies that all retailers can use, which lead to generating more sales for a business. The interior design of your retail store is an issue we have been seeing recently, in an effort to help merchants become more successful boutiques and thrive in today's digital age. Since tell the story of a brand and create immersive experiences to utilities for the development of showcases and announcements signaling when it comes to retail the important thing is in the details. We want you to have the basic knowledge.

It is a known fact that in America, 90% of consumers when entering a shop turn right unconsciously. The first wall you see is often referred to as " wall power " and acts as a first vehicle high impact that provides a potential to the good in this space, so make sure you give extra special attention in terms of what you choose show. Be sure to arouse the attention of your customer with products that you put on the screen, either new or seasonal elements, high yield or high demand for products, to tell stories of your product and create vignettes.

This not only increases the chances of making a purchase, but a well thought out way can be a great way to strategically control the flow of traffic in your store.

Most stores use a circular path starting on the right to reach the back of the store and return to the front. Some will make it even easier, covering the road with different textures, in homage to the old saying " where the eyes go, your feet will follow. " Another thing to consider is that you should use the route to direct your customers to somewhere, which often means putting a flashy ad or screen to draw attention at the end of a corridor, for example.

With all the effort and time you put into your merchandising strategy and the proper arrangement of your products, the last thing you want your customers to come in a hurry and do not observe in detail your store or limit the products they can buy. One way to combat this is through "speeders." In essence, this can be anything that offers customers a visual break and can be achieved through special signage or seasonal.

Most retailers are properly implemented using what is known as " positions of goods " which are devices special display products near the end or in the middle of store aisles that encourage make impulse purchases while completing the products on display. However, since it is often that your store does not have many halls, it is important to think of the group of products in a way that makes them easy to see and go together from the perspective of a buyer. Also remember to keep products " higher demand " at eye level. Finally, it is recommended to change these products weekly or regularly enough to create a continuous sense for repeat visitors.

You can also make your store is comfortable by incorporating some sort of waiting area with comfortable seats and benches that encourage customers to spend more time in your store, especially if a buyer is accompanied by someone who is not interested in making a purchase or children. A small tip to consider is to keep the seats or benches in front of the merchandise.

The design of your store is an endless process, where you can always be changing place things, to create a journey of experiences. At the end of the day, however, that's exactly what you should focus, where you can constantly test and optimize your products. Make your acquentions and family members give you feedback. Finally, keep in mind your customers and see what associates them, what to avoid and how to move, then determines if they match your intented design. Keep your eyes and ears open, so you're sure to create an environment of retail that is a win-win for both for you and your customers.

How to Use a 5-Element Pagoda in Feng Shui

A 5-element pagoda is an energy tool of great protection for the home, especially if you know how to use it properly. For serious feng shui practitioners, it is the first item to be placed in the home or office. Most people who have heard a little bit about feng shui tend to concentrate on the wealth aspect; they tend to purchase a ‘money toad’ and then wonder why it doesn’t work. Feng shui is the study of energy (chi) movement through our dwellings and grounds. The energies are called ‘auspicious’ and ‘inauspicious’. An analogy would be blood flow in the body, where the blood circulating from the heart carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells and the blood returning to the heart is deoxygenated and has waste products needing to be carried out of the body. Good chi carries positive energies, good luck and health. Waste chi is stagnant, toxic and dangerous. Both occur as a normal course of living in the third dimension. It all circulates around the earth and sometimes the bad, or inauspicious, chi comes in and wreaks havoc in our lives.

One of the most powerful tools to stop the inauspicious chi from damaging us is the 5-element pagoda. The five elements refer to earth, wood, fire, metal, and water; these are represented by the five shapes of the pagoda. The most common sort is about five inches tall, made of hollow brass that comes apart to reveal three sections. The top bowl-shaped section can be used as an incense burner. The mid-section is a nifty thing to have in case the screw-on base slot gets lost inside the pagoda (yeah, ask me how I know that). The base has a threaded slot-you know, one of those things you use a coin to turn-and is the access used to fill the pagoda. There are certain items that must be included inside; these increase the protective power of the item.

While some items placed inside the pagoda can be more personal, such as things that are considered protective by the owner, there is one thing that must always be included: dirt. A spoonful or two of dirt from around the home or business is used to ‘lock up the bad chi’. The pagoda usually contains a mantra of protection, incised into the brass, but including a small scroll of the Ten Mantras of Protection can add a layer of security. Stone chips, usually crystal, can be added, as well as some kind of grounding stone like hematite or tiger iron, pyrite or copper, in the shape of spheres. Add a charged crystal and it’s good to go. To charge the crystal, hold it in your hands and concentrate on having it act as your guardian-program it to serve as a repellant to any negative energy. The final step is to add a red ribbon or tassel and set it in place, instructing it to henceforth be always on guard to protect the home and its occupants.

Placement of the 5-element pagoda varies according to which school of feng shui one adheres to; the Flying Star school being my personal favorite (for more on this fascinating branch of feng shui, see my previous articles and website). Placing the device wherever the #5 Yellow Star of Misfortune resides for the year (South-west in 2010) pretty much takes care of those errant energies that could cause huge problems in life. Since that particular star brings “illness, injury and death” it seems prudent to guard against that. The 5-element pagoda is a handy little device that packs a big enough punch to knock those bad energies right out.

Role of Decision Support System For Decision-Making Process in Global Business Environment

Decision Support System:

A Decision Support System is an integrated set of computer tools allowing a decision maker to interact directly with computer to retrieve information useful in making semi structured and unstructured decisions. Example of this decisions include such things as merger and acquisition decisions, plant expansion, new product decisions portfolio management and marketing decisions.

Decision making is a fundamental managerial activity. It may be conceptualized as consisting of four stages: intelligence, design, choice and implementation.

Important aspects of the Decision Support System:

1) The most important consideration is the Decision Support System’s ease of use – its ability to allow non -technical people to deal with it directly. The single greatest and most enduring problem with computers has been their inflexibility, their inability to let the person who actually needs the data to deal directly with the computer.

2) The ability to access information should not be restricted to only the part of an organization or to only certain managerial or professional groups. Instead the resource should be distributed to all of the people and part of an organization needing it without widespread access; the power of advanced Distributed Processing System will go untapped as they typically have in the past.

3) The ideal Decision Support System in sharp contrast to previous method of designing applications should not be a ‘system’ at all in the strict sense of the term. Rather, it should be a highly adaptive decision support generator that can easily be used by professionals to quickly design data support prototypes suited to each specific decision-making task. This adaptive tool must allow quick design changes if the original design does not closely match a person’s information gathering style or needs.

4) To adequately support the human element, this highly adaptive support capability must be able to provide access to operational data and as well as to summary data that already has been processed by application programs designed for other specific operational tasks. Equally important this tool must provide the professional with access to an organization’s raw data and it must allow the access to be accomplished in one step using a single uncomplicated procedure or command and without having to re-key non summary data.

5) The organizations need to access original data sometimes because efficiency is related to how well the original data is organized in the system; the Decision Support Generator should be able to interface with a true DBMS. It should also be able to access standard ‘flat’ files indirectly using the power of the host computer to facilitate both the user interface and data access without changing existing files.

6) The Decision Support Generator should let the user decide whether information should be displayed on the CRT screen for immediate use or whether it should be printed for later use. The best way to accomplish such flexible data presentation is through a work station. How to Estimate the Cost of Building a New Home

This will serve as a help guide by providing some tips and techniques for estimating the cost of building a new home. As an expert residential estimator there are many things to consider before you begin estimating.

Construction estimating can be difficult and it does require a high level of accuracy and detail. It also requires good math skills and a little geometry knowledge. It requires the ability to read and understand construction drawings and details and how they are applied. Basic construction knowledge helps and being familiar with the local building codes.

You may want to enroll in a construction estimating course at the local college or technical school. Another option is to purchase an estimating manual from your local bookstore or go to which offers online courses and has a bookstore.

One of the rules that I have learned along the way is the old saying, “measure twice cut once.” Whenever I do a takeoff or an estimate I always follow this rule in order to help minimize mistakes.

What will you need to put an estimate together?

You will need a notepad, a calculator, an architectural scale, and an engineering scale. These are the basic tools you need to put an estimate together.

Architectural & Structural Drawings

Now you are ready to open the plans and begin to review them. The easiest thing to do is look them over and get a feel for the basic building concept. You should get familiar with the information that is contained on each sheet.

Most construction projects have a set of architectural drawings and a set of structural drawings. I will explain the difference between the two.

It is important that the plans are to scale and have all the required details and wall sections needed to properly estimate from.

What is typically included in a complete set of architectural plans? The drawings at a minimum need to contain the following sheets: a title/cover sheet, a site plan, a floor plan, a foundation plan, four elevations, a roof plan, an electrical plan, a sheet with a typical wall section, a sheet with the window and door schedules, and a sheet with the necessary building and architectural details.

The structural drawings are drawn by a structural engineer, not the architect, unless the architectural firm has an in-house engineer. Any interior shear wall or bearing wall is detailed on these drawings.

The engineer calculates all the uplift and bearing loads of the roof trusses on all the interior and exterior. After doing the calculations they determine which walls are shear or bearing or both and what is required to properly support those uplift and or bearing loads. The engineer will put a structural note on any wall that is bearing or shear. The note will indicate the sheet number and detail number illustrating how that wall needs to be built.

A load bearing wall for example could have a thickened concrete footer with two pieces of steel and the wall above it may need to be framed out of southern yellow pine versus spruce with special metal hardware. These should be highlighted on the plan so they will not be overlooked. Sometimes the hardware called out by the engineer is a special order and can take several weeks to get. So if you wait until the framing package needs to ordered and there are a two or three shear walls with special order hardware it could delay the construction.

You need to make enough copies of the architectural and structural plans for multiple subcontractors and suppliers bidding the job. To save you money, ask your architect and engineer to convert the drawing files to a PDF file. This will save you time as well and make it convenient because you can email them to as many subcontractors and vendors as you like.


A list of product specifications must be provided so all the subcontractor and vendors are bidding apples to apples. This is a list detailing all the products and finishes you want in your new home. It does not make sense to send the plans out to bid without a set of specifications. Without this, the bids you receive will not be apples to apples. Then you will need to have them all rebid the project. It wastes a lot of time and creates a lot of unnecessary work for the subcontractors. Remember these guys do not need practice bidding and some of them may not submit a bid without a set of specifications included. Therefore, everything from paint colors to the floor finishes need to be selected. They need to be listed on the plan or on a separate document.

Doing the Takeoffs

It is too technical to put in a written guide how to quantify the concrete, masonry, lumber, and shingles just to name a few. For example let’s assume you need to quantify the masonry block on a single story block home. You have to know how the wall is assembled which includes the ability to visualize and understand construction methods. If the exterior walls have multiple heights, a regular block (8x8x16) needs to be added and a lintel block needs to be deducted in each location where the plate heights change. If some of the walls are on a 45 degree angle you need to be able to know whether to estimate an angle block or butterfly block. The door and window openings need a certain quantity of regular blocks deducted plus a half block every other course on each side of each opening. You could have too much of one size block and either not enough or some units not accounted for at all. These inaccuracies will throw off your budget and cost you time and money. This ability and knowledge can not come from a book but through hands on experience combined with years of estimating experience.

If you decide to quantify the materials yourself I suggest you refer to Walker’s Building Estimator’s Reference Book, which has instructions on how to estimate the quantities of concrete, masonry, lumber, drywall, etc. It is considered the bible for construction estimators and it is one of required books included in the study guide for most state contractor’s exam. Just keep in mind that these reference books do not have tips and tricks as well as real world experience as explained above.

You can employ the help of your subcontractors bidding the work or your suppliers. You may pay more for their product or service or you can hire us. Either way you are paying for someone to review the plans and quantify what is needed to build the project.

If you have your lumber yard quantify the material remember he is trying to win the job so he may provide a takeoff that is too tight. This does not benefit you if you have to keep reordering more lumber. The obvious answer to this is to have your framer put together the lumber list for you. Well that does not work either because he will over order so he does not run out of material and have to make additional trips to finish. They want to finish as fast as possible so it can get inspected and they can get paid. The bottom line is neither are working in your best interest.

I recommend you do not attempt to quantify the materials yourself. I have outlined valid reasons why. It is very technical and requires someone with years of estimating experience combined with hands on field experience.

Soliciting Bids

This part of preparing an estimate can be done by most anyone. I suggest you contact your local builder’s association to get subcontractor referrals or use Angie’s List, which prescreens contractors as well

You may have heard the term RFQ – Request for Quote. You want to solicit at least contractors. Most people will say three bids, so why do I recommend five bids? Let’s say you contact five contractors and all five contractors bid the project. You got to figure one will be the high bid and one will be the low bid. So those should be set to the side because chances are the low bid is probably missing something and the high bid is priced too high. The remaining three bids should be reviewed thoroughly to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

When you contact all the subcontractors that you want to bid your project be sure to give them a bid due date. That way you do not have to chase them. Give them a reasonable amount of time to review the plans and specifications, typically a week or two.

Analyzing the Bids

First organize all your bids by trade, such as putting all your electrical bids together. A three ring binder with dividers and tabbed with each category is a good way to organize all the bids.

Once you receive the bids you need to read them carefully and review them against the plans and specifications. They should have the project information and the date. They need to be detailed and itemized. The cabinet bid should not say “cabinets”. Instead it should list and quantify all the cabinets by finish, style, size, and location, example 15 lnft of 42″ oak raised panel kitchen cabinets, 1/ea 60″ melamine master bath cabinet, 1/ea 36″ melamine hall bath cabinet, etc. If it does not include the countertops it should state that so there is no misrepresentation.

When a proposal needs to be revised, make sure it states the revision date or states “revised”. That way when you compile the bids and you need to refer back to them you will be looking at the latest one.

The proposals should also indicate workmanship and warranty. All this is important, especially if the contractor does not perform and mediation or worse litigation is required.

How to Negotiate the Best Price

Once you determine the three competitive bids the hard part is negotiating with the contractors. You have to assume that all the quotes will be inflated with the understanding you will negotiate less. Therefore, you need to get them down as low as you can to the real number. I always ask my subcontractors and vendors if the bid is negotiable. Remember it never hurts to ask, the worse they can say is no. And if they say yes, then I ask them what is the maximum they can cut their bid. They normally respond with, “how much do I need to cut it to get the job” and again I put it back on them by saying, “the maximum you can cut your price”. Never name a price first! You should already have a budget of what you can afford to spend on each item. You never know whether or not they would be willing to do it for less than that.

Once they lower their bids and you determine the low bidder you need to compare warranty, workmanship, and references. Price is important, but if they can not finish the job the price does not mean anything. You definitely need to check both project references and credit references. The bottom line is you want the best contractor for the least amount of money.

Preparing an Estimate

Once you have awarded the job to each subcontractor you will want to prepare an estimate. I recommend using Microsoft Excel to organize your estimate. It is the easiest and mostly widely used spreadsheet application, especially in construction.

It helps organize your estimate. You can use a separate worksheet for each trade within the Excel workbook. You can enter all the material lists and bid amounts you receive. You can track the job to make sure you are on budget. You can email your local suppliers your material lists so they can enter their unit prices and they can email it back to you.

One of the sheets needs to be the estimate summary which has the total cost for each phase or trade. It should include your preconstruction costs and direct construction costs.

It should have the estimate total at the bottom.

There are endless possibilities you can do with Excel and the level of detail is up to you.

How to Color Microwave Popcorn?

Making popcorn in the microwave is so easy that at times it can be boring to eat the same type of popcorn over and over again. However, you can now be a little creative and use some simple ingredients in your kitchen to make color microwave popcorn. This is also easy, but at least you will not be bored eating the same colored popcorn whilst sitting in front of your favorite television show.

Prepare microwave popcorn like you normally would. If you want to use butter as a part of the coloring process, opt for butter-free popcorn brand. Once you have finished popping the corn kernels, empty the packet into a bowl.

At this point you may get tempted to much on a few. Stop that temptation at once, as you will have more fun eating colored microwave popcorn.

Use the food coloring of your choice and then match the coloring with a corresponding dried herb or spice from your kitchen. For instance, you can match the red food coloring with paprika, green with dried chives or parsley and yellow with curry powder. If you like sweet popcorn, you can use Jell-O or drink mixes to make your popcorn sweet and also give it different colors, such as purple, pink or lime green.

Melt the required amount of butter in a pan and add a couple of drops of the food coloring into it. Make sure that the butter is unsalted. Stir well. Pour the colored butter onto the popcorn. Toss the popcorn well to ensure that it get covered with the butter. Sprinkle some of the corresponding herb or spice to add a unique flavor to your colored popcorn. Check the intensity of the color. If it is too light, add some more melted butter with food coloring or a little more the spice or herb.

Be careful while adding the food coloring to the melted butter, as adding too much will make your microwave popcorn inedible. Go easy with it. Also, it is best to used freshly minced or ground herbs instead of dried herbs. When using flavored drink mixes or Jell-O, go easy with the amount you use to ensure that the popcorn does not turn out too sweet. Add the mix gradually and keep tasting the butter until you get the desired color and taste.

As you can see, it is very easy to make colored microwave popcorn. All you need is some time to make this unique and delicious snack.
