Crafting Different Uses for Your Food Dehydrator – 10 Ideas to Get You Started

Let’s play a word association game. What is the first thing you think of when I say, “Dehydrator”?

Long-term food storage? Survival food? Fruit leather? Beef jerky? Craft projects?

Wait – “Craft projects?” From a food dehydrator? What kind of craft projects can possibly use a food dehydrator?

Quite a few, actually. Here are 10 ideas* to get you started.

  1. Dried apples aren’t just for eating. Slice apples into rings, dust with cinnamon or nutmeg if desired, and dehydrate. String them onto a length of jute cord, alternating with other dehydrated fruits, nuts, cinnamon sticks, and colorful strips of cloth tied in bows. Tie a knot in each end of the cord or tie ends together. Hang it on a wall, above a door or window, over a curtain rod. Drape it on a mantel or shelf.
  2. Fill a large decorative jar with dehydrated fruits, nuts, berries, flowers, and cornhusks. Seal it with a tight-fitting lid. Set it on a mantel, hutch, or table for a rustic look.
  3. Don’t throw out your flower bouquets! Dehydrate them while they still have color, then use them in arrangements, wreaths, or potpourri. You can dry the whole flower or just the petals.
  4. Dress up your yard sale, bazaar, or craft sale items. Tie dried flowers with a bit of ribbon or twine, then set them in a vase, pitcher, or crock. Mason jars could hold such treasures as home-made trail mix, dried fruit slices, and yogurt taffy. A pretty bowl might hold potpourri.
  5. Glue dehydrated flowers, nuts, fruit, and seed pods onto wood letters, then paint if desired. Attach the letters to a wood base for stability. Spell out your name for a unique desk plaque. Use thicker pieces of wood for individual, stand-alone letters.
  6. Use your dehydrator as a quick way to dry papier mache, clay figures, or plaster-of-paris. Tip: You may want to line the bottom of your dehydrator with parchment paper sheets or a tray liner for easy clean-up.
  7. Dough art is a fun way to get the whole family into crafting! With a basic recipe and a little imagination, you can turn out dozens of dough ornaments, plaques, and figures – perfect for any occasion! Using your dehydrator prevents the cracking, baking, breaking, and browning that can happen in the oven. When your work is dry, it’s ready to be painted and sealed.
  8. Make your own edible cake decorations in advance. Pipe frosting onto solid tray liners or plastic wrap sheets, then dehydrate. Have flowers, swirls, ropes, and dots ready when you need them!
  9. A plain wood frame becomes a work of art when you attach dehydrated items to it. Customize the frame to complement the picture it will hold.
  10. Dehydrated citrus fruits – oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit – make interesting decorations. Thin slices tied with gold or silver cord can be hung on a Christmas tree or in a window. Use whole fruits as candle holders, paint or carve whimsical faces on them, or set them out as air fresheners. You can even use the rinds to make small dolls and animals.

With the yard sales and fairs of summer, the bazaars and craft sales of autumn, and the holidays of winter, now is a great time to be crafting. What will be your next project?

*Some of these items may be large, requiring removeable trays and door for maximum drying space. Be sure of your dehydrator’s capacity and capabilities before beginning your project.

Make Non Alcoholic Cocktails Out of Popular Mixed Drinks Beverages

There are many occasions where it is more appropriate to have mixed drinks cocktails without any alcohol in them. These are usually times in which you will be involving the whole family. While it is always fun to create something special for a holiday, there are times when you just want to have fun with the kids on a weekend night. By taking classic cocktails and turning them into ones that do not have any alcohol in them you will find it is more fun for the whole family because everyone can get involved.

Remember one of the great things about not drinking a gin martini in front of the children while they have a soda is the fact you are all doing something together. This is called building traditions. The traditions you create with your children are something they will treasure throughout their life. This is also something your children will pass along to their children. It is always a great feeling to know you are creating something which will last way after you have died and gone away. Explore the options today to find something the whole family will enjoy for generations.

The Fun Martini

One of the cocktails you can create with your children are flavored virgin martinis. This is possible with all of the vodka martinis which have become popular at the clubs. These include such drinks as lemon drop and sour apple martinis. These are two flavors your children will enjoy and it is something you can enjoy as well. If you are worried about calories, you can always make these drinks with Splenda instead of using sugar or syrup. For the Lemon Drop martini, simply mix together fresh lemon juice, sugar, ice and water in a shaker. Shake vigorously to get some ice shards in the mix. Pour in a chilled martini glass with a twist of lemon peel and enjoy.

To make the green apple martini without a single bottle of Smirnoff, you can buy the green apple flavored syrup which is used for Italian sodas. Mix the syrup with lemonade or white grape juice or even apple juice. Shake in the shaker the same way you would if you were making the lemon drop martini and then pour into a chilled martini glass. Your children will enjoy the color and the flavor of the green apple martini.

The Virgin Margarita

Margaritas are fun because they can be made in a frozen state like a daiquiri. This allows you to create something which will have a lime flavor that the whole family will enjoy. This is a great summer drink because the cooling flavor of the lime will match perfectly with the frozen ice blend you create. All you have to do is add lime juice with water, sugar and ice in a blender. For more flavor you can also add some orange juice or lemon juice. For a Hawaiian flair you can add some pineapple juice to the margarita.

No matter what kind of mixed drinks cocktails you create, make sure you get the whole family involved. Have your children help in mixing and creating the drink combinations you enjoy. This will help to make sure everyone will enjoy the drinks you are creating as well as making sure the children will know how to create the drinks should they decide they would like to share it with friends and so they can carry on the tradition.

Does Your Husband Really Feel Remorse After an Affair?

One of the most hurtful things that a married woman can go through is finding out that her husband had an affair. Out of the whirlwind of emotions that you find yourself going through one of the basic things that most women who have been cheated on want to know is that her husband feels remorse for his infidelity. So how do you know if your husband really feels remorse after an affair?

Most men are guarded when it comes to their emotions to begin with so it would be logical to find yourself wondering whether he is really sorry after his affair. Is he is truly sorry or just sorry he got caught? Figuring out what side of the fence that your husband falls on is the first step to deciding whether or not to give him another chance after the affair.

There are many arguments that can be made as to why your marriage deserves a second chance, but I look at it in very simple terms. When infidelity happened in my own marriage, it boiled down to two things. First and foremost, my husband and I still had a tremendous amount of love for each other. Secondly, we both wanted to give our son a fair shot at growing up with both parents in the house. Those two things were more than enough for us to do the work to fix our marriage. Once we got past the initial hurt we were able to get down to the root cause of our problems. That was the key element that saved our marriage.

If you find that you and your husband have a similar reason to try and save your marriage there is still one more thing you need to find out. There are a lot of men out there that get caught up in the chase and conquest of other women. That is just a fact of life. You must find out whether or not your husband is a perpetual “hunter” or if there is an underlying problem that can be addressed and help fixed your marriage.

How Am I Supposed To Know Which Side Of The Fence That My Husband Falls On?

With the exception of maybe his mother, there is no one in the world that knows your husband better than you do. After an affair your spouse can feel like a total stranger but that is the emotional reaction. Even in cases where a woman is severely duped by her spouse that doesn’t mean that she no longer knows anything about the man she married.

Did you suspect something was going on with your husband on any level? If you are able to answer that question honestly I am sure that you will find that on some small level you suspected something was wrong. My honest guess would be that you knew even before you were able to admit it to yourself.

Armed with that information, you can be assured that you can still trust your instincts when in it comes to your husband. You knew what was going on before you just wouldn’t confront it. If you are like me, there is no way that you would turn a blind eye to the warning signs of an affair again. All of that should help you remove all doubt when you ask yourself, “Is he truly sorry for his affair?”

What If I Am Not Convinced He Is Sorry?

One of the biggest sources of unhappiness in relationships in general is expecting your spouse or significant other to be something that they aren’t. People must realize that NO ONE CAN CHANGE ANOTHER HUMAN BEING, just because he or she married you doesn’t mean the he or she is capable of being that man or woman you expect them to be.

If you don’t feel that you husband has any genuine remorse for his affair then it may be best to let him go do what he wants to do because he won’t change until he is ready to change, and as bad as it sounds that may be never.

“I believe in the power of love”, “I am a hopeless romantic.” Those are great things to be in theory but in real life they lead to heart break. The cold hard fact is that you can sit at home and pray to whoever it is that you pray to every day and night, and your husband is still going to be who is he is.

When your spouse has an affair you be one of the most painful and confusing things a married person will ever go through but it doesn’t have to end your marriage. If you and your husband both are willing to do the work, then I know firsthand how a marriage can come out of the adversity stronger and healthier.

Mobsters – George Appo – The Most Famous Pickpocket in the History of New York City

His father was a crazed Chinese murderer, and his mother – an Irish alcoholic. In spite of his lack of proper family upbringing, George Appo’s mission in life was to be the quintessential “Good Fellow.”

George Appo’s definition of the phrase “Good Fellow,” was a man who was an expert thief, one who would not cooperate with authorities, and who absolutely refused to testify in court, even against their enemies. Appo wrote in his 99-page autobiography, which was never published, “What constitutes a ‘Good Fellow’ in the eyes and estimation of the underworld is a nervy crook, a money getter and a spender. A ‘Good Fellow’ valiantly accepts the consequences and punishment of an arrest, even if the crime was committed by another. A ‘Good Fellow’ was a member of a fraternity of thieves.”

In the late 1840’s, George Appo’s father Quimbo Appo, ran his own tea business in New York City, before he moved to New Haven, Connecticut. In 1855, Quimbo Appo met Catherine Fitzpatrick, an Irish immigrant who was only in America a few short years. They married, and in 1856, Catherine Appo gave birth to two children. The first reportedly died in childbirth, but the second was described as “A handsome, healthy boy, very sprightly, as white as his mother, a Yankee boy to all appearances, with only the Chinaman’s breadth between his eyes.”

Shortly after George Appo was born, his father returned with his family to New York City. After working as a tea tester for several companies, in 1859, Quimbo Appo opened his own tea store on Third Avenue, between Seventh and Eighth Streets.

Quimbo Appo had a violent temper, made worse by his wife’s incessant drunkenness. On March 8, 1859, Quimbo Appo came home from work and found his wife, as usual, three sheets to the wind. He began beating Catherine Appo, so viciously, the landlady of their building, Mary Fletcher, and two other tenants Margaret Butler and Mary Gavigan, interceded and tried to stop the beating. Quimbo Appo became so enraged, he pulled out a knife and stabbed Fletcher twice in the chest. Fletcher fell fatally wounded to the floor, screaming, “My God.” Quimbo Appo then stabbed Gavigan in the arm, and Butler in the head.

Quimbo Appo ran to another Chinese boardinghouse, but was soon found by the police hiding under a bed. After he was arrested, Quimbo Appo told the police, “Yes, I killed her.

The front page of the Herald Tribune read the following day, “Murder in the Fourth Ward.”

Quimbo Appo’s trial took place on April 11, 1859. It took the jury less than one hour to reach a verdict of guilty. Even though the prosecutor, District Attorney Nelson J. Waterbury, recommended life imprisonment, a month later, Judge Davies sentenced Quimbo Appo to the death penalty. However, Quimbo Appo’s lawyer appealed the case, and on May 8, 1860, Gov. Morgan commuted Quimbo Appo’s death sentence, and instead gave them a 10-year term in the state penitentiary at Sing Sing.

However, Quimbo Appo’s 10-year bit evolved into a life sentence, because of Quimbo Appo’s penchant for violence, and also because he was basically a lunatic. As a result of several violent incidents, and bizarre behavior on his part, Quimbo Appo never became a free man again. He died at the Watteawan Hospital for the Criminally Insane on June, 23, 1912.

After his father’s incarceration, George Appo and his mother returned to their slum apartment on Oliver Street. Soon after, Catherine Appo decided to take her son, and his younger sister, on the ship The Golden Gate, to visit Catherine’s brother in San Francisco. However, the ship was caught in a violent storm and sank. Both Appo’s mother and sister perished, but Appo somehow survived.

Appo wrote, “I cannot explain how I was saved, only that a sailor brought me to New York and left me with a very poor family named Allen.”

The Allen family lived in the rear-yard tenement alley “Donovan’s Lane,” also called “Murderer’s Alley,” located on a tiny strip of hidden dirt, with the tenements so close together, hardly any daylight could penetrate into the alley.

Appo wrote, “One entrance was on Baxter and the other entrance was on Pearl Street. Poor people of all nationalities lived on this Donovan’s Lane. It was a common sight to see every morning at least 6 to 10 drunken men and women sleeping off the effects of the five-cent rum bought at ‘Black Mike’s,’ which was located at 14 Baxter Street. Next door to Mike’s was a second-hand clothing store owned by a man named Cohen, who was a fence, where all the crooks used to get rid of their stolen goods. Up over Cohen’s store was where all the Chinamen of the city lived. At the time there were only about 60 Chinamen in all the city and then the lane was called Chinatown.”

Donovan’s Lane, or if you wish – Chinatown, was in the heart of New York City’s worst slum called “The Five Points.” In this cesspool of humanity, Appo learned the tricks of the trade that enabled him to make a decent living in a life of crime. Appo, at about the age of 10, became part of a group of scavengers, which the people at that time called “street urchins,” “arabs,” “street rats,” or gutter-snipes.” While Appo was making an honest buck at low level jobs, like shinning shoes, sweeping sidewalks, and selling newspapers, Appo also perfected his true love – the art of picking pockets.

It was quite easy for a young boy selling newspapers, to pick the pocket of an unsuspecting mark. Appo used the guise of the “newspaper dodge,” a ruse, in which, while he was ostensibly selling newspapers, Appo, with one hand, would wave the newspaper in a customer’s face, then with the other hand, he’d pick the victim’s pocket.

Appo’s pickpocketing mentor was a master craftsman named Jim Caulfield. Caulfield once told a policeman, “If you will stand for a newspaper under your chin, I can take your watch, your watch and chain, and even your socks.”

In the winter of 1871, Appo was caught picking the pocket of a downtown businessman. The businessman grabbed Appo by the neck, and handed him off to a passing policeman saying, “This boy just robbed $28 from my vest pocket.”

Appo pleaded guilty before Judge Joseph Dowling. The judge sentenced Appo to an undetermined time on floating reform school, which was located on the naval vessel The Mercury. The Mercury housed on board 242 boys, who were convicted of such crimes as vagrancy, truancy, and larceny. On board The Mercury, boys learned seafaring skills, such as navigation, seamanship, military drills, and making all different kinds of rope knots, which were essential in a seafaring life. There were also classes for the boys in reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Yet, life on The Mercury was anything but idyllic. The food was barely edible. The water was filthy, and contagious germs permeated the ship.

In 1872, the Mercury made a 9-month trip to and from Barbados. Upon its return to Harts Island, off the coast of Manhattan, Appo and several other boys escaped from the vessel by lowering themselves down by a rope to a rowboat. After they arrived at shore in downtown Manhattan, Appo hustled back to Donovan’s Lane and commenced picking pockets again.

In 1874, Appo was caught by a policeman picking the pockets of a Wall Street executive. Appo tried to flee the scene, but a passing detective followed him in hot pursuit, firing his pistol at Appo. Appo was hit once in the stomach, but he managed to escape.

Appo staggered into a building at 300 Pearl Street, and went to apartment that was occupied by the Maher family. While Mrs. Maher hid Appo under a bed, she ordered her son to go out in front of the apartment building to see if any policeman were in the area. When the coast was clear, Appo fled the apartment, and received treatment at St. Luke’s hospital, from a physician who was friends with one of Appo’s confederates. The bullet in Appo’s stomach was removed, and soon Appo was back on the streets, doing what he had been doing before. Six months later, Apple was caught picking pockets again. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to two years and six months in Sing Sing prison.

At Sing Sing, Appo was united with his father, who went in and out of lucidity. The senior Appo was normal most days, but on his bad days, he was delirious, and he said things like “I am King of the World.”

In Sing Sing, Appo was given job in the laundry room as a “presser” of shirts. After Appo accidentally burned one of the shirts, Appo’s teeth were knocked out by one of the guards. Then three guards took Appo to the guard room, handcuffed him from behind, and forced him to lay face down on a paddle board table. There Appo was given nine sharp lashes with an oar on his back and spine, rendering him unconscious. When he regained consciousness, the head keeper said to Appo, “Do you think you can go back and do your work all right now? If you don’t, we have a way to make you.”

Appo told the keeper, “You punished me for nothing, and the next time I am brought here you will punish me for something.”

Appo stumbled back to laundry shop. He immediately took the shirts that were on his table waiting to be ironed, and put them inside a hot stove, where they soon were reduced to ashes. After his dirty deed was discovered, Appo was brought back to guard room. When he was asked why he did what he had done, Appo refused to answer. Appo was immediately taken to one of the “dark cells,” where he was imprisoned for 14 days. During those 14 days, Appo was given 2 ounces of bread and a glass of water every 24 hours.

After serving 30 months in Sing Sing prison, Appo was released on April 2, 1876. Surprise, surprise, he immediately went back to picking pockets. In the next eight years, Appo was arrested twice more for pickpocketing, and returned to jail in both instances, the last time on Blackwell’s Island. Appo escaped from Blackwell’s Island, by shimmying down a rope from the ship where he was working, to the water down below. Appo jumped into a small rowboat and rowed until he docked in downtown Manhattan. Appo immediately sunk the boat, and made his way to Mulberry Street, where he was able to borrow some clothes. The next day Appo absconded to Philadelphia.

Appo did very well picking pockets in Philadelphia, but the lure of his old streets in downtown Manhattan, especially the opium dens, was too much for Appo to resist. Back in the sixth Ward, Appo decided to deviate from his usual pickpocketing and engage himself in the flimflam business. Appo’s chief swindle was giving store owners the wrong change for $10 or $20 bill. This racket went fine for a while, until Appo was caught in a jewelry shop shorting the owner. However, through the machinations of the nefarious law firm of Howe and Hummel, Appo was somehow able to escape prison time.

In the early 1890’s, catching pickpocketers and flimflam men became the favorite pastime of the New York City police. So Appo decided to try a new scheme: a scheme where he was less likely to be arrested. This scheme was called “The Green Goods Swindle.”

The Green Goods Swindle was a three-pronged operation. It started with the “operators,” or the bosses, who hired “writers,” who wrote circulars to be sent to all parts of the country. The basis of these circulars was to entice people to agree to purchase counterfeit money. The green goods circular contained wording something similar to this:

“I am dealing it articles, paper goods – ones, twos, fives, tens, and 20s – (do you understand?). I cannot be plainer until I know your heart is true to me. Then I will satisfy you that I can furnish you with with a fine, safe, and profitable article that can be used in any manner and for all purposes, and no danger.”

The writers would also include in the circular the prices for their goods. A typical price list would read: For $1200 in my goods (Assorted) I charge $100. For $2500 in my goods (Assorted) I charge $200. For $5000 in my goods (Assorted) I charge $350. For $10,000 in my goods (Assorted) I charge $600.”

These circulars were sent to people from around the country, who had invested in various lotteries. The feeling of the “operators” was that these were the type of people who most likely would do something illegal for monetary profit. Confederate soldiers were also sent circulars. New York City assistant district attorney Ambrose Purdy explained why, “Former Confederates were so emotionally embittered and economically indebted, that they viewed green goods as a good way to hurt the government.”

Once communication had been established between the “marks” and the “operator,” The marks were directed to take a train to New York City, or to the suburbs close to New York City. There the marks would meet the third cog in the Green Goods Swindle, who was called the “steerer.”

The steerer, one of whom was George Appo, would meet the marks at the railroad station and take them to the operator, or the “turning point,” who was waiting for the mark, either at a bogus storefront, or in a hotel room. The operator would show the marks a sample of his “counterfeit” money, which was actually legal tender. The mark being satisfied that the money he had been shown certainly looked legal, would give the operator the money that had been agreed upon to purchase the “queer bills.” The operator would then put the bonus counterfeit money into a cheap suitcase. A diversion would then occur, temporarily deflecting the mark’s attention. During this diversion, the “operator” would switch the suitcase, and replace it with an identical one given to him by one of his confederates. Of course, the second suitcase was filled would plain ordinary paper, and sometimes even sand.

A this point, the job of the steerer was to get the mark quickly out-of-town, before the mark realized he had been swindled. As added insurance, the operator sometimes employed the services a local cop, or detective, and sometimes even several local cops, or detectives. If the steerer had a problem with the marks, either on the way to the train station, or on the train before it left the station, the crooked cop, or detective would jump in and threatened the mark with arrest, if the mark didn’t leave town immediately. The mark would have no recourse, since he had been attempting an illegal transaction in the first place.

One such illegal Green Goods Swindle almost cost George Appo his life. In February of 1893, Appo was working a Green Goods Swindle with Jim McNally as his operator. Appo was directed by McNally to meet two men at a hotel in Poughkeepsie, New York. Appo went to the New York Hotel in Poughkeepsie, and entered the room of two men named Hiram Cassel and Ira Hogshead, shady entrepreneurs from North Carolina. Appo gave the men a letter identifying Appo as the connection between the Old Gentleman (the operator) and the two men. Appo said that he would take the two men to the train station to board a train for Mott Haven, where they would see the counterfeit money they were purchasing. After the transaction was completed, Appo said he would take the men directly to the train station, pay their fare, and send them on their way back home. Appo told the men that on the way to the train station, they must walk 10 feet behind Appo, and they must speak to no one, including Appo.

When Appo arrived at the train station, he was met by Hiram Cassel, but Ira Hogshead had stopped just short of the station, and was talking to a policeman, the same policeman who recently had a problem with Jim McNally, over his cut in a previous swindle. Appo approached Hogshead and asked him why he was speaking to the policeman. Hogshead said, “I don’t care to do business. I’ve changed my mind.”

Appo walked the men back to the hotel room, where Hogshead insisted the deal was done, and he demanded that Appo leave the hotel room immediately. As Appo was shaking Cassel’s hand, Hogshead shot Appo in the right temple. Appo was taken to the hospital hospital in critical condition. In a few days, Appo’s right eye became infected and it had to be removed.

Cassel and Hogshead went on trial for shooting Appo. However, since Appo, staying true to the code of a “good fellow,” refused to testify against the two men, which prompted the judge to release Cassel and Hogshead, with a simple $50 fine. Appo, however, was arrested for running the Green Goods Swindle, and was sentenced to three years and two months at hard labor. Plus, Appo was fined $250.

Luckily for Appo, after spending only a few months in Clinton prison, on November 28, 1893 the New York Court of Appeals overturned Appo’s conviction.

Feeling betrayed by Jim McNally, and by green goods operators in general, Appo agreed to testify before the Lexow committee, which was looking into police corruption, and their involvement in the Green Goods Swindle in particular. Appo didn’t tell the committee anything they already didn’t know, but he was branded a rat on the streets of New York City, and was shunned by the very people he had done business with for many years.

George Appo caught a break, when in September of 1894, he was approached by George W. Lederer, a renowned theater producer. Lederer offered Appo a part in his new play entitled “In the Tenderloin,” in which Appo’s was to simply play himself, in a play about New York’s underbelly. Appo toured the country in this play for several years, but when the play’s run ended, Appo was stiffed by Lederer for $15,000 in unpaid salary. Appo, although he tried for several years, never did collect his money from Lederer.

At the start of the 20th century, George Appo decided to live a life free from crime. He worked as a car cleaner at Grand Central Terminal, and also as a handyman at Calvary Church, the Sallade dress factory, and in the home of millionaire reformer a Alexander Hadden. In 1915, Appo began working for the government, during its investigations of opium dens. Appo received a salary of six dollars a month, in addition to another six dollars a month for rent for his apartment. Soon, Appo’s salary was increased to $10 a month.

In his final years, little was heard about George Appo. What is known, is that Appo lived in a small apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, on the west side of Manhattan. On August 10, 1929 George Appo was admitted to the Manhattan State Hospital on Wards Island. By that time, Appo was nearly deaf, and almost entirely blind.

On May 17, 1930, even though he had been shot four times, stabbed twice (once in the throat), and brutally beaten in prison, George Appo died at the age of 73, from nothing more than the effects of old age.

Here is one example: a parent who lived through the children's accomplishments, and needed for them to be perfect in everything they did. And so, good grades were never good enough. What would a 90 percent on a test ensure? Endless criticism, a clutching of the chest in disbelief, and bitter complains.

And what would the child's response be to all of this? The belief that if she were not perfect, she'd ruin her parents' life. What behaves would it cause in such children? They'd become driven, feeling that no matter how much they realized, it was never enough. Where would that lead? To the inability to enjoy any achievement, to never be able to relax, have fun, and do any activity for the pleasure of it because to do so would make them feel guilty. Unconsciously, they assume that their parent will feel devastated if they're not always seeking to achieve more. And more and more.

Does any people you know, friends possibly, have trouble getting close to someone they're quite attracted to? Looking at from the outside in, it may not make a lot of sense, but looked at from the inside, it probably does. What if a friend had a parent who was extremely needy, who absolutely had to be in full possession of your friend's love and attention? Your friend's closeness to this parent was essential for the parent's well-being, so much so that they or she would resent your friend's normal involvement with others. Sulking, acting depressed and moody when your friend was happy or close to anyone else (including teachers, grandparents, or friends) were well within the repertoire of this parent's behavior whenever your friend was spending time with others.

Finding fault with anyone your friend valued was another sign that the parent felt wounded by the child. What was the effect of all of this on your friend? An obligation to change his or her personality just to maintain a relationship to the parent: staying tied to the apron strings, complimenting the parent all the time, showing extra affection, spending less time with friends. All are possible copying mechanisms developed by your friend to accommodate this parent's possessive need for him or her. "Loyalty" will become a high priority moral value in your friend's mind and it will have a powerful influence through his or her life.

And the effect of this particular accommodation on future relationships Will be detrimental at best, dysfunctional at worst. Your friend will either feel uncomfortable pursuing friends for fear of being disloyal to his parent, or he'll worry that anyone he's seriously involved with will require undue loyalty and devotion from him.

This is how accommodation can start and it is also the start of some people's self-defeating motivations. In the case study below, we'll see how one man's accommodation affected his ability to succeed in business and in relationships.

Did you ever have a terribly painful blind date – one that, thankfully, only rented a short time? Now think about your childhood situation. You're stuck with your parents and siblings for years and years, no matter what. Now think of the accumulated resentment building up after years of accommodating behaviors that you know lifted you away from some of your normal qualities and goals. To tie this resentment, you may have become an accommodator. Another route you could have taken was rebellion. What does look like and how does it show up in your life? Let's see.

The Essentials You Should Bring to the Indy 500 Race

BRINGING THE ESSENTIALS: Before deciding what things or “stuff” you need to take with you to the track, you need to know a couple of important facts. First, the distance between your seat and your car is likely to be a mile or two. This means you will have a long walk to and from your seat. Be sure you are able to carry or transport your “stuff” for a distance of a mile or two. Also, be sure to take the “stuff” you deem essential, because you are not going to be able to just get up and leave your seat and walk back to your car to get something your forgot to take to begin with.

The “stuff” you take to the track should include at a minimum the following essentials:

RAIN SUIT– If there is a chance of rain, be sure to carry an inexpensive plastic rain suit with you. It may be the only cover you will have, if it begins to rain. Umbrellas are not a good idea. If you pull one out in the stands, you might succeed in keeping yourself dry, but the rain that falls off the top will surely land on your neighbor and it is bound to make you very unpopular.

SUNSCREEN– Even on cloudy days, prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause you to suffer a sunburn. Be sure to carry a small tube.

EAR PLUGS – Many race fans don’t find them necessary, but if you are not accustomed to loud prolonged noise, you should consider packing a pair of inexpensive foam earplugs to dampen the noise.

ALLERGY PROVISIONS – Race day is smack dab in the center of pollen season. If you’re not from these parts, you might discover the high pollen count is enough to overwhelm your immune system and cause you to suffer itchy eyes and a runny nose. Packing some tissues and a couple over the counter allergy meds might save you from sudden unexpected misery.

RACE EDITION OF SUNDAY STAR – Unless you have studied the field of cars in the field of 33, it is unlikely you will know who’s who when the race begins. The Indianapolis Star (Indy’s local newspaper) publishes a special edition of the paper for race day. It contains a score card and a photo line up of the field. From this photo line-up you will be able to tell which car is being driven by Sarah Fisher and which car is being driven by Scott Dixon. The race is a lot more fun when you know who’s passing who.

BINOCULARS – While not exactly essential, bringing a small pair of binoculars with you will enable you to see a lot of things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see. If you have the capacity to carry them, go ahead and bring them. You won’t regret it.

CAMERA – A camera is not essential. But, there is no better way to preserve your experience for posterity than to record it in a photo. For that reason, bringing a small digital point-n-shoot or an inexpensive disposable instamatic might be one of those items that will help you treasure your trip to Indy for years to come. If you’re a photo geek with an expensive DSLR, nothing we would say here would convince you not to bring it, so you might as well through it over your shoulder with everything else.

JACKET – Because it is nearly impossible to go back and get it once you get to your seat, its not a bad idea to where a jacket suitable for a cool day, if the forecast indicates there is a need for it. You can always take it off, but you can’t put it on if you don’t have it.

COOLER – Most everyone brings their own food and drinks to the track. This is the best way of ensuring that you will have exactly what you want when you want it. While the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is saturated with concession stands, they often run out of food and beer before the end of the day, particularly if there is a rain delay. So bringing your own cooler is a great idea. Just be sure that it does not exceed 14″ in height, width, or depth. The guards will not allow you to enter the grandstands with a cooler that exceeds those dimensions, because it won’t fit beneath your feet between the bleachers. If your cooler does exceed those dimensions, you can leave it on the ground underneath the bleachers. Then you can make supply runs between your seat to your cooler, when you need to restock. Don’t pack glass in your bags or coolers. Your coolers and bags will be searched when you enter the speedway and you will not be allowed to bring in any glass containers. Stick with cans, they are they safe choice.

ALCOHOL – If you expect to consume alcohol on race day, please know your options. Alcohol sales on Sunday are restricted to restaurants, pubs and trackside vendors. You cannot buy alcohol from a liquor store, convenience store or grocery store on Sunday. Race day is on Sunday. Therefore, you need to stock up the night before the race, unless you want to depend on the vendors to supply you all day.

MAP OF INDIANAPOLIS – If you’re not a native, get a map and keep it in your car. When leaving the speedway after the race, you may not be able to leave the same way you came in. If you are forced to take an unfamiliar route out of the speedway, having a map will come in handy and you will have plenty of time to study it while you’re inching your way through the heavily congested streets.

POST RACE ENTERTAINMENT PROVISIONS – While there are ways and means of making a speedy exit from the speedway, it requires fast feet, a carefully executed parking plan, and a bit of luck. Therefore, you might want to resign yourself to the proposition that there is no reason to get in your car and leave right after the race. Many veteran race fans take the whole thing in stride and plan for the inevitable. They fire up the grill, get the football, Frisbee or lawn jarts out of the trunk, dip into the auxiliary supply of beer, and enjoy themselves while others sit in traffic for hours. Just bring something to entertain yourself with for a couple hours after the race and you’ll thank us later.

Investment Properties and the HST

Investors who bought new homes or condos in the past few years have faced HST bills up to $30,000 mainly due to their ignorance. In a nutshell, in order to qualify for new home (or condo) HST rebate, the new home or condo has to be either your primary residence or you must prove that you have rented it out for at least a year.

Now let us go into further details…

HST or The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) was introduced in Ontario on July 1, 2010, combining the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) with provincial sales tax into a single tax. Buyers pay HST on new units but not on previously owned units.

Often buyers of residential investment properties are not clear on HST. Based on the questions that I often encounter from my clients, here’s a most simplified explanation. Although care is taken to present all the information as accurately and efficiently as possible, readers are strongly advised to seek tax advice from tax experts and lawyers before buying any type of property. Please note that no representation or warranty with respect to the accuracy or the completeness of the information is given.

O.K. Are you ready to compare different scenarios/situations now?

Situation 1: Your intention at the time of buying a new home or condominium is making it as your primary residence. Then you or your close relatives move into your home on closing. In that case, you can apply for the full rebate immediately and HST rebate may not be added to your sale price. The builder claims the HST rebate on your behalf and offers you a lower price excluding HST rebate.

This type of rebate is known as New Housing Rebate (“NHR”). The NHR can be assigned to a builder from home purchasers on the unit/home sale closing.

Here are some quotes from CRA website.

“If the buyer is an individual who will use the house as his or her primary place of residence and the purchase price is less than $450,000, the buyer may be entitled to the GST/HST new housing rebate.”

“For purposes of the GST/HST new housing rebate, a person who has more than one place of residence should consider some of the following factors as to whether the residence may qualify as the primary place of residence:

  • whether the individual considers the house as his or her main residence;
  • the length of time the premises are inhabited; and
  • the designation of that address on personal and public records.

This means that you cannot claim a GST/HST new housing rebate for an investment property or a recreational cottage that is not your primary place of residence.”

Situation 2: Your intention at the time of buying is to lease it to someone as a primary residence. In that case, you are also entitled for the same amount of HST rebate as in situation 1. But your procedure is different and you must have extra money for closing. Since the builder cannot claim the HST rebate on your behalf, you are required to come up with the extra cash on closing to reimburse the builder the HST rebate he would otherwise get. The extra money can be as much as $30,000 upon closing. To prove your intention, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires a one year lease. When you have leased it for 1 year or more, fill out the application form with the required documents and claim your rebate from CRA. You have two years to file the rebate application. Once you file the application, you can expect to receive the refund in 2 or 3 months.

So HST rebate is available to the landlord of a new property (including a single home or residential condominium unit) if the first occupant of the property is a tenant. This rebate is referred to as the New Residential Rental Property Rebate (“NRRP Rebate”). NRRP Rebate cannot be obtained from the builder and such purchasers must apply for the NRRP rebate directly after closing.

Here are some quotes from CRA website.

“The GST/HST NRRP rebateapplies to eligible rental accommodation and to land leased for a residence. The rental accommodation or land must be intended for long-term use as a residence.”

“Generally, you may be eligible to claim the provincial NRRP rebate if you qualify for the federal NRRP rebate for a rental property located in Ontario and you paid the HST”

Situation 3: Your intention at the time of buying a new home is to re-sell. Then just pay the full HST amount when you buy the home from the builder, and don’t apply for any rebate.

Situation 4: Re-sale condo. Before putting an offer on a resale condo ensure that there is no HST. The federal portion of the HST will apply to your purchase if:

  • You are buying the unit from someone who acquired and used the unit primarily (more than 50 percent) for business purposes (unless this was to earn long-term rental income);
  • You are buying the unit from someone who has claimed input tax credits for improvements to the unit; or
  • The unit has been substantially renovated. To find out what qualifies as a substantial renovation.

The Sport of Archery in the Olympic Games

Archery was not a sports event in the first ancient Olympic Games in Greece. However, the games were held for over 1,000 years, so it's quite possible that at some time archery was an Olympic sport in the past.

Archery for men was an event for the first time in the modern Olympics in 1900. The first archery event for women was in 1904. However, there was no uniformity in the rules in those early Olympics and archery was dropped as an event after 1920. The international governing body for archery, the Federation Internationale de Tira l'Arc (FITA), was founded in 1931. It took many years before all countries accepted the new international rules for competition, but archery was able to return as an Olympic sport to the 1972 Munich Games. In 1988, team competitions were held in addition to the individual events.

Since 1992, the event format is head-to-head competition for the top 64 athletes. There are four archery events: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team.

Individual competitors (men and women) shoot 72 arrows at a 'bulls-eye' target from a distance of 70 meters (229 feet, 8 inches). Each shot must be made within a 40-second time limit. A perfect score would be 720. A 'sudden death' overtime shot is made in the event of a tie.

Team competitions consist of 16 3-archer teams. As in the individual events, each archer shoots 72 arrows are shot at a distance of 70 meters. In a tie score, each team member will shoot one arrow. The arrow closest to the center of the target determines the winner.

The target has ten rings. One point is listed for an arrow landing in the outermost ring, 2 points for a hit in the next ring, continuing in this manner to the center ring which rewards 10 points.

The recurve bow is used by Olympic Archers. An arrow shot by this bow travels at more than 150 mph. The bows are very 'high-tech', manufactured from wood, fiberglass and graphite. They have stabilizers which help keep the arrow flights straight and sights to help in aiming. The strings are made from a hydrocarbon product or from Kevlar. The arrows are aluminum or carbon graphite. The cost of this gear is over $ 1,000.

An Olympic archer has typically been training for at least ten years. It's essential to develop perfect form (or as close to perfect as humanly possible). A good coach is also very important. The proper equipment, of course, is needed. Fortunately, archery is much less expensive to pursue than many other sports. Read, study, talk to other archers. Attend and compete in local and national tournaments. Most important, practice, practice, practice.

Archery is a sport accessible to many disabled athletes. A New Zealand woman, Neroli Fairhall, was the first paraplegic to compete in the Olympic Games. She was a gold medalist in the Commonwealth Games. This is also a sport that people can continue with for much of their lives and enjoy with their families. Hope to see you at the Olympics!

Tahr Hunting in New Zealand

About New Zealand Tahr

The Himalayan Tahr, originally from the areas around Tibet, were introduced to the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand around 1904 to 1906. Initially considered a pest, the New Zealand government controlled the Tahr herds with government sharpshooters and aircraft. Over the last twenty years, the Tahr hunting status has changed from being unwanted pests to a manageable, renewable and valuable resource to many local and overseas trophy hunters.

The Tahr is a majestic animal found on hillside rocky outcroppings with their long “lion like” mane blowing in the wind. This is truly a majestic sight. When put to chase, the Tahr hunter will be in awe of their climbing abilities in the steep New Zealand Alpines they call home.

The Himalayan Tahr is close relative to the free range mountain goat. A Tahr has relatively short legs and small head with large eyes and small pointed ears. Their hooves have a flexible, rubbery core that allows them to grip smooth rocks, while a hard sharp rim can lodge into small footholds. Tahr inhabits steep broken mountainous landscapes ranging from 3000′ to 8000′ above sea level. Males are much larger and have different coloration and horn structure than the females. Adult Himalayan Tahr can weigh from 300 to 400 pounds and stand 2½ to 3 feet tall. The nannies (females) only weigh 45-55 pounds. This is one of the largest “pair” ratio differences between any mammals in the world. Himalayan Tahr are herbivores, subsisting on tall alpine “tussock” grasses and shrubs. Himalayan Tahr can be found in herds from 2-25 animals and can live up to 14 years old in the wild.

What makes a Trophy Bull Tahr?

A Bull Tahr has horn bases of 8-9″ and a sharp round curled horn of 10 to 14 inches. A Tahr Hunter will judge a good trophy male by its long mane as well as its horns although record book scoring only uses a combination of the base horn diameter and length of both horns. Most Tahr hunting guides will look for horns over 11 inches in length. Tahr horns of 12.5 to 13.5 inches are considered an above “trophy” average and horns over 14″ are exceptional. There have been a few New Zealand Tahr taken with horns over 15″ and these usually fall into the SCI Top 10 Record Category.

When should I plan my Tahr Hunting Trip?

Like Chamois hunting, Tahr Hunting can be done year. The ideal time to hunt Tahr is during New Zealand’s late fall and winter. By Tahr hunting in winter, the Tahr will have their winter coats and manes. A Tahr’s mane can grow 5-8″ in length from February to early June and turn darker in color. Late May, June, July and August are ideal months to hunt Tahr and chamois. The Tahr rut runs late May thru July which usually correlates with the first snow of the season. The rut is an excellent time for Bow hunting. Tahr can be hunted in conjunction with the red stag “roar” or rut in March and April but the hunter will have to work harder to find a Tahr with a long mane at that time of year. The coats will also be lighter in color before winter sets in.

What is the best way to hunt New Zealand Tahr?

Most Tahr hunting mountains are accessible by two-tracks or fire trails up to the tops of the mountains. Hunters usually glass the mountainsides in the early mornings and again in the late afternoon and then hunt down the mountains and are greeted by the outfitters vehicle below. Tahr hunting terrain can range from 3′ tall tussock grass to rock and shale hillsides. In most cases, the physical demand for this type of hunt is a lot less than that of Mountain Goat or Sheep hunting. You should allow at least 2 days for a rifle Tahr hunt (in good weather) and 3-4 days with a bow for a good specimen. If you are strictly record book trophy hunting, you can easily double that time period.

What about Tahr hunting by Helicopter?

Helicopter assisted Tahr hunting enables hunters to access the more remote mountainous areas where there are excellent trophy animals. It also gives greater assurance of success if the hunter has a limited time in New Zealand to hunt. Helicopter assisted hunting can be an exciting alternative with spectacular flights, and the opportunity to take an exceptional trophy. It is important to note that the helicopter is only used as a mode of transportation and animal recovery. Hunters are not allowed to shoot, drive or herd animals from the air. The Tahr hunters spot their trophy from the helicopter and are taken to an area when they can pursue their spot and stalk by foot. This type of hunting does contain a element of caution as you will be exiting a moving aircraft on an unknown mountain ledge.

What do I need to take with me on a Tahr hunt?

Most Tahr hunting is done in the higher elevations of the New Zealand Alpines. Some of these mountains are covered with 2-3′ tall clumps of Tussock Grass and some are rocky outcroppings of rocks and broken shale. Starting in June, these same mountains could also have snow on them. Make sure you have good boots that are broken in. Since you may be hunting in snow, you will want your boots insulated and waterproof. If you are hunting on a mountainside of tussock grass, wear a good pair of gators. The gators will keep the snow or morning dew from getting your hunting pants wet and cold. Premium optics is essential. Buy the best “glass” you can afford. I recommend a binocular harness as it will come in handy when traversing shale and lose rocks. This will keep your binoculars from getting bounced around or worse, banged on a rock. Most Tahr rifle shots will be in the 150 to 250 yard range. A good range finder will come in handy for both rifle and bow hunters. At 300 plus pounds, the Tahr is a good size trophy animal. I would recommend 7mm or larger and 164 grain or larger expandable bullet. A good 3,000 fps.30 caliber with an 180 grain expandable bullet is ideal for Tahr. Your rifle should be equipped with a good quality scope in the 3×9 or 2.5×10 magnification. I would also recommend a good backpack that is capable of carrying your rifle or bow. This will keep your hands free when moving across the mountainsides. If you are bow hunting, a good bow hunting guide can usually get you within 40-50 yards of your Tahr during the rut. Taking a trophy Tahr is quite an accomplishment with a bow. Allow yourself extra hunting days. Your biggest challenges in Tahr hunting are the nannies giving their warning whistle as you stalk your Bull Tahr.

How should I have my Tahr taxidermy mounted?

I recommend that all Tahr hunters, especially first time Tahr hunters, really think about how you want your bull Tahr mounted. A shoulder mount is the most economical taxidermy mount but it really doesn’t give justice to the long hair on the Tahr’s mane. Here is a tip for your first (or only) Tahr Hunting trip.

Have the guide cape it out for a full body mount. It will be 4-months before you get the cape back to the USA and probably several more months before your taxidermist will send it out for tanning. This will give you some extra time to decide (and save up) whether or not you want to do a shoulder mount or a full body mount. If your guide capes it out for a shoulder mount in the field, you are stuck with your choice. The full body bull Tahr mount is spectacular and will be a highlight to any hunter’s man cave or trophy room. You may also want to consider taking a Nanny Tahr. Some outfitters will let you harvest a Nanny for a few hundred dollars in conjunction of taking a bull Tahr at their standard trophy fee. A Bull & Nanny Tahr make a great pedestal mount.

Global Sporting Safaris, a hunting consultant company, offers the best opportunity for Tahr hunting in New Zealand. Whether you are a bow hunter, muzzleloader, crossbow hunter or rifle hunter, we have the locations, guides and experience to put you on the trophy Tahr hunt of a lifetime.

Abdominoplasty – Tummy Tucks Complications and Risks

So you think of abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) what are the possible complications of Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks)?? Are they easily avoided I’m not telling you these complications to make you afraid of abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) but because technically I always prefer the patient be aware of his surgery complications and steps.

Here is the list of possible complications of Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks)

Anesthesia reaction:

This is reaction during surgery because of anesthesia

Belly button death:

More Common in Smokers Occurs Due to failure of healing of 2 surgical scars

Hematoma (risk is 3-4%)

Collections of blood

Infection (risk is less than 1 %)

Not common as surgeries are done in septic conditions

Heavy scar

Puckered skin

Skin Lesions in which skin is wrinkled

Reactions to medications

Skin irregularities

Skin necrosis or skin death (more likely with smokers)

Slow healing

Suture Rupture

Visible scar

Serious complications after an abdominoplasty are uncommon. However, there are risks with any surgery and specific complications associated with this procedure.

Complications such as infection and blood clots are rare, but can occur. Infection can be treated with drainage and antibiotics, but will prolong your recovery. You can minimize the risk of blood clots by moving around as soon after the surgery as possible (immobility allows blood to pool and create a clot which can travel to the lungs, heart or brain causing a pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke).

If wound problems develop, it may delay healing for several weeks or even months. Areas of skin may die and slough off (this complication is more common among smokers). This will result in delayed healing and may require a skin graft. Although rare, it is possible for fat to liquefy and drain through the incision. Additional surgery may also be necessary.

One of the more common problems after an abdominoplasty is collection of fluid under the skin after the drains have been removed. Your surgeon can aspirate the fluid with a needle. The drainage stops within a month and will not affect the final results.

Surgical scars -as complication of Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) – are permanent. There will be a long scar extending from hip to hip. However, the incisions are usually placed below the swimsuit line so they will not normally be in view. Your scars may actually worsen during the first three to six months as it heals, but this is normal. It normally takes 9 months to a year before scars flatten out and lighten in color.

Nutritional Consequences

Protein Deficiency complication

Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) is a metabolic surgery designed to produce malnutrition. Energy deficit occurs due to low food intake, food intolerance, and nutrient malabsorption. Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) aim to achieve malnutrition to lose weight but without complications.

Protein deficiency can occur after Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks). The ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass loss is about 4:1 unrestrictive operations like RYGB.12 It is probably even more severe after biliopancreatic diversion (BPD). The literature isn’t clear. Some report severe protein-calorie malnutrition13although low incidences have been described by others.

Protein deficiencies manifest themselves initially with fatigue and loss of muscle strength, especially with greater than expected weight loss as in patients who have strictures of the gastrojejunal anastomosis. Progression of protein deficiency is predictable with continuing weight loss with the additional development of hair loss, poor wound healing, wasting, emaciation, kwashiorkor, and marasmus.

Protein deficiencies should be addressed promptly with supplementation. Although normal protein requirement for the average individual is 1 g/kg body wt/day, this formula does not work for the morbidly obese with weights of 200 kg more. Most Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) surgeons aim for 60-90 g per day for their postoperative -Abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) -patients, but, in fact, there is little evidence for this guideline. Protein deficiency can be assessed by checking serum albumin levels at regular intervals, but it isn’t a reliable measure. We have seen virtual normal albumin levels in patients who were severely malnourished that fall to extremely low values when additional nutrition is provided. It almost appears that the patients lack the enzymes to utilize the albumen, building albumen stores that cannot be used.

Approach is to proceed promptly by supplementing these patients with one or two cans of a liquid, high protein, high vitamin preparation such as Ensure Plus if they are able to tolerate an oral diet. This approach rarely fails but may take weeks to restore patients to euproteinemia. If the patients are unable to eat or drink, however, total parenteral nutrition should be started promptly with an emphasis on slow rather than fast correction. In our experience, badly malnourished patients should be corrected slowly; they are unable to manage sudden large loads of nutrients when they are first seen.

Carbohydrate Deficiency Complication

Carbohydrate deficiency, manifested as episodic hypoglycemia, is probably quite common. Many patients admit to having episodes of feeling “shaky and light-headed” during the day, usually about 2 hours or so after meals. When our series of gastric bypasses was about 1000 cases over 16 years, we found 47 patients in our practice who developed documented glucose levels in the 30-40 d/mL range. The hypoglycemia appeared to be independent of age, gender, race, original weight, and degree of weight loss and could appear as late as 14 years after the operation. Fortunately, all of our patients were managed well with candy taken at the first “aura” of hypoglycemia, i.e., weakness, shaking, sweatiness, etc. All cleared within a year of the appearance of symptoms. A recent report of nesidoblastosis requiring pancreatic resection suggests that refractory cases exist possibly due to the development of secondary tumors.

Flush Uric Acid and Cure Gout Naturally

If you flush uric acid then you will cure gout naturally! Unfortunately, most people do not realize how simple flushing uric acid can be. Are you a person who is relying on an expensive painkiller to treat your arthritis problem?

If you are taking medication for your sole treatment for this type of arthritis, you are at risk at doing further harm to your joint(s). It is proven that you are more likely to disfigure your joints if you are taking painkillers. This is because painkillers mask the pain when the pain is telling you something.

The pain is telling you that you need to change your diet and nutrition plan and you need to begin to flushing your body. Are you listening?

How to Cure Gout Naturally

Because this disease is caused by uric acid crystals, it only makes sense to try to dissolve and flush the cause. But where does the acid come from?

Uric acid is a natural byproduct of purines; and purines come from the foods and diet that we eat. Therefore, the cause of gout is a physical condition which you can control.

If you want to cure gout naturally, you need to know how to keep purines out of your body and the acid flushed. And it may be simpler than you think!

Flush Uric Acid with Theses Secrets

1. The best way to lessen the load on the body is to avoid all animal products and meats until your gout is cured. Purines are mostly found in animal products, you should become a quasi-vegetarian for a few days.

2. You should also be drinking plenty of water. A good rule of thumb would be to drink enough to always keep your urine clear.

3. Eating fruits and vegetables is also important because they are loaded with water soluble fiber. This type of fiber is synonymous with flushing the body. However, you should avoid pineapples, tomatoes, oranges and cranberries which are loaded with high levels of acids.

4. One remedy that has become very popular is celery seeds. Celery seeds contain nearly 20 different types of anti-inflammatory properties which make them a highly effective treatment. To prepare, simply combine one tablespoon of celery seeds with 2 cups of water and boil until the seeds become soft. Strain the seeds from the mixture and drink one cup 4x every day.

5. It has been found that supplementing folic acid can help eliminate uric acid production. 10 to 75 mg per day inhibits xanthine oxidase which is required for uric acid production.

How To Build A Lamp Out Of Rocks

A lamp out of rocks?…Am I crazy? Actually, I have been doing this for a few years now and when done correctly, the final product is beautiful and extremely unique. If you decide to take this venture on, be prepared for your family and friends to be in awe of your new wonderful creation. A stone lamp fits wonderfully in that cabin of yours in the woods or can be placed in that special rustic corner in your traditional home.

Let’s get started with the tools and parts you will need. These tools are essential for getting this project done correctly and may require a little bit of a financial investment to get started.

A drill press. The press does not have to be a large, floor model…it can be a bench top type for now. It does have to have a setting on it that will enable the drill to go fairly slowly through the rock. A setting of around 200-300 rounds per minute is best.

A 3/8″ mortise bit. The mortise bit for this purpose only has to be around 5″ long. DO NOT buy a carbide-coated bit, as these seem to not work as well. Home Depot or Lowe’s both carry a standard 3/8″ mortise bit for around $5.00.

A lamp kit with a harp included. These lamp kits are easy to use and will come with everything you need to put your lamp together. You will want to make sure the kit comes with a harp also if you are planning on using a shade that requires a harp. These sell for around $8.00 at most hardware stores.

A 3/8″ thread rod around 10 inches long. This rod can be bought along with your lamp kit in the hardware’s lighting section. Usually, the lengths come in 24″ to 36″ and cost around $4.00. After you put the lamp together, you will want to cut the rod to length and I will explain how to do that.

A good strong epoxy glue that sets within 30 minutes.

An angle grinder with a wheel suitable to grind rock.

Your Rock

The best place to get your rock for your lamp is to find a dried up riverbed. Rocks from dried riverbeds tend to be easier to drill and lend themselves more easily to making a lamp. Please note: We don’t want to disturb riverbeds that are in use by our natural rivers and streams but picking up rock from dried up sources poses no harm to the environment. You will need a base to start with. Look around for a fairly flat base that when set down on a table, it won’t rock back and forth but will sit stable. For this project, your base should be about 8 inches square and about 1 inch to 2 inches thick or thereabouts (any variation is OK as long it is fairly flat). After you have found your base, look for smaller rocks of different shapes and sizes and choose ones that are fairly flat on both sides too. This will make it easier to drill and fit together on your lamp. These should be around ½ ” thick or so. You will need about 6 of these smaller rocks.

Drilling The Rock

Now that you have gathered your choice rock for your lamp, it is time to drill. Place the base of the rock on your drill press and roughly find the center of the rock. (You do not have to be exactly perfect in finding the center as this is a rustic lamp and if you are a little off, it only makes it more rustic and interesting). You should make sure that where you are going to drill is relatively flat so the drill bit does not dance around on you. (Before you drill, make sure you have a little water on hand to either spray the drill bit or splash some on to it as the drill bit can get very hot and could break if not kept cool). Begin drilling slowly, around 200 to 300 rounds per minute, and continue until you are completely through. Yeah….you did it! Now, repeat these steps with your remaining smaller rock until all are drilled and ready to put together.

Take your length of 3/8″ rod and cut it down to about 10″ or so. Place the rod into the larger base and start stacking the smaller rock on top. Since none of these rocks are exactly flat, you may have to move them around a little to make sure they fit together snuggly so that the inner rod does not show. After you have completed this process you will most likely have extra rod on top that needs to be cut off. Taking your lamp parts into consideration, you will have to leave enough rod to hold your coupler, your piece that holds your harp, and your actual lamp fixture base. Usually, this means leaving about 1 inch or so above the last stacked rock. You can test this by getting all your lamp parts out, putting them one by one on the top of the extra rod, and then making a mark just under the first piece (coupler) to see how extra rod you need to leave protruding out. Mark your rod where you need to cut it, pull off the rock one by one keeping them in order and cut your rod to length.

Final Assembly

Put your pre-cut rod back into the base and put some of your epoxy glue around the hole where the rod fits into and around a small area where your first small rock is going to sit. Take your first small rock and slide it down over the rod and put it on top of the glued area on your base. (It is important to keep your glue area small so it is not seen after the rocks are placed together). Continue this process until all the rocks are places tightly together on the rod. Make sure the inside of your rod is clear all the way through the center without any obstructions so you can slide your lamp cord through it in the next step. You have now completed the most difficult part of making this lamp. Let your lamp sit for a couple of hours or so to let the glue set up.

Using the directions on your lamp kit box, assemble the rest of the lamp parts as shown. You will have to push your cord all the way through from the bottom of the base. (Sometimes, depending on the rock base, your cord will not sit correctly under the base and may cause the base to rock a little. This is where you will need your angle grinder with a wheel suitable to grind rock. Turn your lamp upside down and take your angle grinder and dig a small indentation from the middle of the rock where the rod is towards the back of the lamp. Just make sure the groove is deep enough to hold the lamp cord).

Finally, spray the lamp with a satin or semi-gloss clear lacquer to seal the rock and to bring out the natural colors of the stone. Apply two or three coats of the lacquer. After the lacquer is dry, you may want to put a piece of felt on the bottom of your lamp so it will not scratch the table it sits on.

Congratulations, you have now made a beautiful rustic stone lamp!
