Worry-Free Trade Show Booth Install and Dismantle Tips

When you work with an Install and Dismantle (I & D) company at your next trade show– and every exhibitor must hire an install and dismantle company– it is important to have full communications with them so that your trade show exhibit will remain intact. It is essential for the trade show exhibitor, therefore, to provide the installer with a written, descriptive, detailed breakdown of all trade show booth items and components.

This inventory list should not only include the number, size and dimensions of the trade show exhibit items, but also a description of what these pieces are. In fact, it would be helpful to have a photo of the inside of each crate. Providing specific and detailed information on your trade show display can make a huge difference in your trade show booth installation and dismanting efficiency and cost.

A detailed inventory list provided by the trade show exhibitor that includes not only the number of crates and skids, but also a detailed description of what is in each skid of the trade show exhibit helps guard against losing pieces that may get washed. Everything should be itemized including literature, giveaways, monitors, hanging signs, etc. If these trade show exhibition items are included in detail, there is less chance for error. By giving this information to your trade show exhibit installer, they will be able to do their job more efficiently, saving you time and money. Since everyone is in a hurry as the trade show move-in date gets closer, having a list on hand in advance will help ensure a worry-free trade show booth installation on the trade show floor.

According to John Taggart of Coastal International, a Sausalito, California based company that specializes in installing and dismanting trade show exhibits, the work his employees do relatives heavily on the information he gets from the trade show exhibitor.

Here are some of the installation guidelines that Taggart identifies as essentials for a worry-free exhibit:

Understand the trade show floor facility. Determine in advance where the electrical is positioned in that facility. Does the electrical distribution come from the floor or from the ceiling? If the electrical comes from the ceiling, you will need to hide the electrical hanging cords, sometimes inside a tower, and then spider the cords out on the floor and cover them with carpet. Knowing wiring requirements in advance will simplify the lighting and power process for the installer. This goes for all conventions sites when they are the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Santa Clara Convention Center or the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

Coordinate the time schedules of all of your vendors. It is important to know how to properly pace the timing of your freight carrier, drayage and installer providers. For example, if you are exhibiting in the Hilton Hotel in downtown Manhattan, you will need to allow extra time for freight to be delivered. This is due to limited access to hotel freight elevators and the fact that the hotel has only two dock spaces. There is also heavy downtown traffic that can cause delays. Advise your freight carrier to check in to unload at the earliest possible time. They can avoid long lines by getting to the exhibit dock well in advance of the stated move-in time.

Provide a full scale layout of the specific exhibit display including a description where each panel goes. It is best to provide this layout 5 to 7 business days before the show. Why? Exhibitors may be traveling on airplanes and your I & D handlers would be unable to reach the exhibit rep via cell phone. If your installer has to make a call call, and it's a wrong one, you would need to pull electrical, carpet and other pieces and start all over. By knowing where each exhibit component is positioned, they will be able to accurately assemble the trade show booth without guesswork and then avoid costly re-dos and down time.

Provide specifics on outbound shipping of your trade show exhibit. When it is time to break down the exhibition,
be sure your I & D company has information on the correct outbound shipping address, repacking instructions
and proper bills of lading.

Remember that a descriptive and detailed inventory list can save you time and money and ensure that your trade show booth remains intact. The more information your I & D handler has, the faster they will be able to do their job. If you take the mystery out of your trade show exhibit assembly, you will win the day.

Employ Freelancers For Small Jobs

Small job employment can involve all sorts of activities, such as surfing, texting, commenting on blogs or YouTube videos, joining Facebook groups or becoming a Twitter follower. These are the sort of thing that anyone can do, but can not be done by just one person. An employee typically enlists the help of a large number of people to help boost the popularity of something that he or she is trying to promote, such as a YouTube video or a blog. Comments on sites such as these get picked up by the search engines and help lead surfers to the site.

Small job employment can also involve work that requires a little more skill on the worker's part, such as writing, graphic design or web programming. Anyone who has marketable skills such as these and a computer can earn money online through small job employment. In today's uncertain economy, no job is secure, and many skilled workers have found them without employment due to corporate downsizing. Instead of pounding the paving looking for another job or settling for something that's benefit their skill level, some people have opted to stay at home and work online. Many mothers have found that working online from home lets them spend time with their children and avoid the high cost of child care. It's also a great way for young people to earn a little extra cash, especially if they are having trouble getting into the work force.

There are thousands of them available online, and new ones are being created consistently as webmasters continue to promote their sites.

For employers, the Internet is the solution to finding inexpensive labor to do simple things that really do not warrant hiring people and putting them on a payroll. They can simply find willing participants, instruct them in what to do and then issue payment online. There are several excellent sites on the Internet that bring employers and workers together for all sorts of tasks. The site acts as an agent, taking a small percentage for the service and often payment can even be taken through the site in the interest of security for both parties. So, if you have small jobs that need to be done, help is literally at your fingertips!

How To Keep Wrought Iron Crystal Chandeliers Sparkling

If you have adorned your home with wrought iron crystal chandeliers then you will want to take good care of them in order to ensure that they keep their sparkle for a long time. You will have to take special care when dusting or cleaning the crystals as they are the most fragile part of your chandelier and also the area where fingerprints and dust are most likely to show.

If your wrought iron crystal chandeliers are not in a high traffic area or in an area where they get dirty very often then you can just dust them periodically and save the heavy cleaning for once or twice a year. Most people just use a feather duster from time to time but it helps if you use one that will repel dust. Whatever you do, don’t twist your light fixture as this can loosen the installation or potentially damage your chandelier. If you can’t reach the fixture then it might be worth it to invest in a duster with an extension handle. If you don’t want to do that, then you may just need to use a step ladder in order to properly clean your chandelier.

If you will be handling the crystals at all then you will want to wear white cotton gloves so as not to leave fingerprints on the crystals. If you’ve ever noticed a chandelier sparkling from across the room then you probably realize that you can also see fingerprints from across the room so it is important not to handle the crystals with your bare hands. In fact, some people actually clean the crystals using just the gloves and a mild solution of one part rubbing alcohol to three parts water. With the solution on one gloved hand and the other gloved hand dry, you can easily wipe the crystals clean and dry them at the same time.

Few, if any, crystals on wrought iron crystal chandeliers are dishwasher safe, although there are some high end crystals that are. Unless the manufacturer clearly indicates that your crystals are dishwasher safe you must assume that they are not. If they are very dirty you can remove them from the light fixture and wash them with a mild detergent, although this is a big job. Finally, be sure the crystals are totally dry before you reattach them to wrought iron crystal chandeliers or you run the risk of damaging the frame.

Eliminate Skin Wrinkles – The Easy and Effective Way!

Trying to eliminate skin wrinkles? One of the most frustrating thing is the sight of those wrinkle skin as we grow old. I am sure you are very much like me when it comes to trying to get rid of those sagging skin and fine lines – trying numerous creams and solutions that does not work. What are wrinkles and why is it so difficult to remove them?

The Development of Wrinkles

Your skin when you were younger was soft, smooth, firm and supple. You are absolutely allowed to expel that sigh of longing for that once beautiful face. Sadly, as you become older, your firm and supple skin designs lines, furrows and creases typical of wrinkles. In its more advanced stage, the skin on your face will loosen and will begin to sag. Not a very pleasant thought indeed!

Your skin develops wrinkles because the collagen that keeps the skin smooth, firm and supple is slowly being depleted from your skin. The uppermost layer of the skin technically known as the epidermis is supported from benefit it by the collagen bundles that are found in the dermis or the second layer of the skin. These collagen bundles are composed of two types of proteins known as collagen and elastin. Collagen is essential for the skin's tensile strength while elastin is responsible for the skin's elasticity and flexibility. When these two are combined in the collagen bundles, the skin is provided with its much needed support and scaffolding that gives the skin its shape and form. With the support that the collagen bundles provide, the skin is kicked firmly in place. So, no matter how it is stretched and contorted, the skin will return to its original shape.

However, the collagen bundles essential for the youthful appearance of the skin deplete and break down with age. The body's capacity to produce collagen is significantly reduced together with the slowing down of the other physiological processes and functions. Also, the UV rays, free radicals, and pollutants that the skin is usually exposed to are wrecking havoc on the existing collagen bundles causing it to break down and shed off. With these combined factors, it is not surprising that one day you wake and your skin is not how you expected it to be, which prompts the budding desire to eliminate skin wrinkles.

How to Eliminate Skin Wrinkles

Eliminating skin wrinkles is a complicated process. You are dealing with not just one but a complex conglomeration of skin problems.

The most common remedies for wrinkles are over-the-counter skin care products. There are thousands of them saturating the market. Thus, it is extremely cruel for you to know what works and what does not work for wrinkles.

Collagen contained in skin care products do not work for wrinkles because their molecular compositions are just too big for your skin pores to absorb. Since the collagen contained in these products can not be absorbed by the skin, it can not give your skin the support for which collagen is bought for.

What you should be in the look out for is not collagen but ingredients that promote collagen production. These ingredients are Cynergy TK, Coenzyme Q10, and Phytessence Wakame. They stimulate the collagen production mechanism of the body for increased collagen in the skin. Also, they contain potent moisturizer for high level skin hydration. Another bonus is the fact that these ingredients also contain powerful anti-oxidants to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV rays, pollutants and free radicals. So, if you want to eliminate skin wrinkles, you better ensure that these ingredients are contained in your skin care products.

Design of Rain Gutter Systems For Home Construction

After I received the 2008 edition of the State of Michigan building code I eagerly looked through the table of contents for rain gutters only to find no mention of these troubling troughs that hang at the edges of a roof. So I looked to the index only to be disappointed again. There was no mention specifically of rain gutter systems to be found. I am a licensed building contractor here in Michigan and have been repairing, reworking and cleaning gutters for over five years. Gutters are not designed into a house; they are simply tacked on as an afterthought by workers of various skills and abilities.

The long term maintenance problems and damage caused by poorly designed and installed gutters cost millions of dollars. Millions of dollars from injuries and even the death of homeowners trying to clean their gutters must also be taken into account. Start with the grade; how does water naturally flow around the house? The roof and gutters should be oriented so the water flows away from the house and never over walks, drives, decks or patios. A cistern to hold water for irrigation can then be the starting point for the design of your house.

Here are several design details that should be incorporated into the building code:

1. A downspout is required for a run of gutter not to exceed twenty feet. This will allow for slope of 1/20″ per linear foot giving proper drainage. This will decrease molds, mildew and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Subtract one foot for every inside or outside mitered corner. Example: a run of gutter with two turns should not exceed 18′ without a downspout.

2. Downspouts will be of the “commercial” (3″ X 4″ or 4″ round) size. The larger pipe will not clog with leaves and seeds as easily.

3. Gutters draining upper roofs over lower roofs must be accessible by ladder from the ground.

4.Downspouts will be fixed to the gutter by cutting tabs into the bottom of the trough then bending them down to allow a screw or pop rivet to fix the downspout to the gutter. This eliminates the outlet flange which leaks and causes leaves and seeds to catch.

5. One-piece “offset” elbows will be used instead of two-piece elbows that are commonly assembled on-site now. In my experience I have yet to see these one-piece offsets clog. The upper two-piece elbow is where the vast majority of clogs are found. Many times the entire downspout has to be removed and taken apart to clear the clog.

6. The vertical pipe will have a maximum of three turns; two at the outlet for the gutter and one at bottom extension.

7. Downspout pipes that are not vertical must be avoided!

8. The bottom of the lower elbow will be at least one foot above the grade with a four foot extension.

9. Downspouts or gutters will NEVER be let out onto a roof surface or into a roof valley!

10. A minimum of two pipe bands will be used for every downspout or every ten feet of downspout to fix the vertical pipe to the house.

11. “Internal” or “hidden” hangers with screws will be used instead of gutter nails. These internal hangers are far superior to old-fashioned nails that must be located precisely in the ends of rafters, ceiling joists or trusses to work properly.

12. “Two-by” ( 2 X 6 or 2 X 8) lumber will be used instead of one-inch planks now used to make the fascia. The lumber will be covered with pre-coated aluminum to permanently seal the wood from the elements. This will allow the internal hangers to be placed every twenty-four inches with little need for precision.

13. A gutter hanger will be at least six inches from the center of an outlet.

Too often houses are designed for curb appeal and the roof is not a considered as a functional system to protect the home from the elements but as a fashion statement. The gratuitous use of steep slopes, valleys, ridges, dormers, gables and even turrets will only decrease the long-term value of a house. Reducing water run-off and enhancing the irrigation needs of the landscaping can be a huge benefit to the environment. The cost to replace roofs, clean and maintain gutters and the potential damage from water intrusion must be balanced with the aesthetics of the home: form follows function; beauty is found in the functionality of the design.

The Superiority of Alligator vs Crocodile Leather

Many products today are made from alligator or crocodile leather, from purses and shoes to custom leather dog collars. When trying to determine whether alligator or crocodile leather is more superior leather or more luxurious, there are many factors to consider before making a final determination.

Generally, alligator leather is viewed as the nicer and more luxurious leather, with more symmetrical scale patterns and a softer hide. Alligator has a smoother and more “three-dimensional” feel than crocodile skin, and alligator hides typically command the highest prices. It is one of the most highly sought raw materials by the manufacturers of luxury items.

Although extremely rare, a very few number of crocodile skins can compare with the quality of alligator hide. These would include “Nile crocodile” and Australian saltwater crocodile. When processed and tanned correctly, these very rare and expensive crocodile skins can meet or exceed the luxuriant nature of alligator skin.

Species of Reptiles

There really is only one species of alligator, known as the American Alligator. In contrast, there are over a dozen species of crocodiles from all over the world. The most common is the Brown Caiman, which is found in Central and South America. Generally, caiman skin is drier and stiffer than alligator skin, and significantly less durable. Unfortunately, many items made from caiman skins are deceptively labeled as alligator products.

Most species of crocodile are endangered and therefore illegal to hunt and harvest for commercial use, or at the very least their use is restricted by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

When examined closely, crocodile or caiman skin will have small pits in the scales. These pits do not exist at all in genuine alligator products.

A Comparison of the Leathers

At first glance, it can be very difficult to tell crocodile from alligator leather. They are similar in a number of ways, and both will provide many years of useful service. However, the value and quality of the leather can vary greatly depending upon the tanning process used and the body section of the donor animal from which the leather is taken. The most important considerations tend to be softness, scale pattern, and finish.

For the most part, alligator skin is of a far greater quality, with more symmetrical scale patterns, softer skin, and a smoother feel than crocodile skin.

Most mislabeling occurs with the Brown Caiman, whose skins tend to be thinner, dryer, stiffer, and less durable due to less sophisticated tanning processes. For most products, the skin from the belly and throat areas is used because it provides the most symmetrical scale patterns, which are rectangular in shape. Skin taken from the sides of an animal will have scale patterns that are more rounded in shape, and the hide can still be of a high quality. The least desirable part of the animal is the tail, which comprises approximately 50% of the animal’s length. Skin from this area is stiffer with scales more widely spaced, and it is usually heavily scarred.

Size Matters

The size of a skin can help distinguish genuine alligator from a caiman or croc. Alligator skins are generally six to 12 feet long, while caiman and most croc skins are only three to five feet long. With smaller donor animals, the transition of scale patterns is evident even in small items such as a wallet or purse.

Scale patterns tend to correlate to the size of the animal. Therefore, hide from a full grown alligator may have scales that are over one inch square and tend to be more symmetrical.

Alligators Retain Superiority

In general, alligator skins are going to be softer, more supple, more durable, and provide a more uniform scale pattern than crocodile or caiman skins. Additionally, alligator is not an endangered or threatened species, so products manufactured from genuine American alligator are maintaining an environmentally friendly status as well.

Repairing Automotive Paint Damage Caused by Bird Poop in 5 Minutes

Every time you take your car out of the garage it’s exposed to potential paint damage hazards. Some of the most common issues are acid rain, insects, battery acid and road stones. There is another hazard that’s particularly messy and harmful, and that’s bird poop.

Bird poop is essentially an acid. It can have a pH level between 3.5 and 4.5. That means it will burn delicate surfaces unless it’s removed relatively quickly. On car paint, in particular clear coat finishes, bird droppings burn the surface, causing a permanent etch mark.

It’s not at all uncommon for a large dropping to cause paint damage that’s 2 mils deep, or more. To understand what that means to your car’s clear coat, good laser printer paper is about 2 mils thick. More importantly, a quality clear coat finish is typically 4 to 6 mils. That means a heavy-duty bird bomb won’t leave a lot of clear coat in the area that needs to be repaired. The good news is that paint etching from hard water spots and bird droppings is an easy repair you can make at home. Most repairs like this take less than 5 minutes.

Fixing Bird Poop Paint Damage

The only way to repair the paint damage caused by a bird is to polish the affected area with a fine cut rubbing compound. The basic procedure is to use the compound to cut away the damage and re-polish the surface so it looks new again. This is exactly the step taken by professionals and the factory when they remove painting defects. Your only concern is over-polishing. Be careful that you don’t over do it and polish all the way through the top coat.

The best car polish to use is one that’s formulated for removing paint scratches or restoring oxidized paint. The product I highly recommend is Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound. It’s available in most auto parts stores, and it works great by hand or with an electric car polisher.

If the damage covers an area larger than about 1 square inch, a polishing compound alone might not do the trick. For larger areas of damage you can make the repair faster and easier by first removing the damaged paint with 2000 or 3000 grit wet sanding paper, then re-polish the area with the compound. This may sound severe, but it’s not. It’s a safe procedure used by paint and body shop professionals.

Preventing Bird Damage

Although it’s difficult to avoid being splattered with bird waste, it’s not at all difficult to prevent the damage. The sooner you remove the mess, the less likely it will be that your paint will be damaged. Conversely, the longer the mess remains on your vehicle’s paint the more damage it will create.

If you live in an area where you are prone to getting pooped on, I highly recommend keeping a small bottle of car detailing spray and a microfiber cloth or two in your vehicle. It will come in handy for all kinds of spills and emergency cleanups. The Meguiar’s Quik Detailer product is very inexpensive and easy to find. When you need to clean up a bird mess, simply give the bird droppings a few shots of the spray, allow it to soak for a moment or two, then wipe it away.

The legend behind the Luck Cat is as follows: In the 17th century , there was a run down and poverty stricken temple in Tokyo. The temple’s priest was very poor, but he shared what little food he had with his pet, Tama. One day, a feudal lord was caught in a storm while hunting and he took refuge under a big tree near the temple. While he waited for the storm to pass, the man notice Tama, the priest’s cat, beckoning him to come inside the temple gate. The feudal lord followed the cat into the temple and instantly, a lightning bolt struck the place where the lord had been standing. Thus the cat saved his life. From then on, the Lucky Cat has been considered an incarnation of the Goddess of Mercy ( Kwan Yin ).

Mandarin Ducks: Like the love birds, mandarin ducks represent devotion, fidelity and romantic bliss and should be placed in the SW sector of your home or bedroom.

Money Frog: This is a mythical animal known as the “Chan Chu” and is said to appear every full moon near homes that will receive news of increased wealth and good fortune. Also called the “Three Legged Money Frog” it is usually placed right inside your front door facing INTO the home. The coin in it’s mount should be place with the four symbols up, not down. It can also be placed in your wealth sector and next to a cash register. They are never to be placed in a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.

Panda Bear: This beautiful animal is one of the most endangered animals in existence. It is called Da xiong mao which means giant bear cat in China. The Panda is believed to have magical powers that can ward off natural disasters and evil spirits and is also a symbol of peace.

Peacock: The peacock is the western culture equivalent to the phoenix in China. Placed in the SW of your home or bedroom it is said to attract and enhance happy relationships and marriage.

Phoenix: The phoenix is imaginary creature of the ancient Chinese Feng Shui. The phoenix is usually red or crimson in color and symbolizes the luck of wish fulfillment. The South corner of your home or office can be activated by placing the phoenix there. The phoenix is said to bring opportunities, fame and recognition. When combined with its “soul mate”, the Dragon, put in SW to attract happy relationships and marriage.

Red Bird: This can be an image or a figurine/statue of any kind of bird, a parrot, cardinal, etc. Put in the South for protection.

The rooster is said to quell arguments, backstabbing and politicking. Also, pointing the beak of a rooster towards a beam or column in the home will deflect the negative chi they can bring.

Tiger: The tiger is considered the king of the wild animals. It is seen as a symbol for royalty, power and fearlessness. An image of the Tiger is believed to dissipate negative chi. The Tiger is very important in Feng Shui because its stripes represent the auspicious balance of Yin and Yang.

Turtles: The turtle symbolizes support, longevity, endurance, wealth, happy family, long generations, good luck and fortune. Because the turtle is one of the celestial animals, it is said to possess protective powers as well. Legend tells us that the turtle has in his body the secret of heaven and earth and the design on his shell shows the Lo Shu magic square which is the guide for life. Turtles can be placed anywhere, but you should really have at least one in the North sector of your home. They can be facing in different directions based on what they are made of. For example: place crystal turtles facing North, metal turtles facing West, wooden facing East or Southeast, ceramic facing Southwest or Northeast. The Dragon Headed Turtle is a powerful symbol of wealth, health, prosperity and protection and should be placed in the North or the Southeast.

Wild Geese: Because wild geese always fly in pairs, they are excellent to put in SW part of your home or bedroom to enhance your romantic relationship. Geese are messengers of good news and represent the married state.

NLP Mirror and Matching – The Basis of Rapport and Communication Skills!

Can you remember a time when you met someone for the first time and it just seems to click? An instant bond between the two of you, an instant ‘like-ability’ or trust. You can literally FEEL, that connection!

That connection is called Rapport! It is the basis and foundation for every meaningful interaction between two or more people. Rapport is about establishing an environment of trust and understanding, to respect and honor the other person’s world. This allows the person the freedom to fully express their ideas and feelings and know they’ll be respected and appreciated by you. Rapport creates the space for the person to feel listened and responded to, even when you dis-agree with what the other person says or does. Each person appreciates the other’s viewpoint and respects their model of the world. When you are in rapport with another person, you have the opportunity to enter their world and see things from their perspective, feel the way they do, get a better understanding of where they are coming from; and as a result, enhance the whole relationship.

A 1970 study conducted by Dr. Ray Birdwhistle at the University of Pennsylvania concluded that 93% of our communication transpires non-verbally and unconscious. 55% of our communication is our physiology or body language, 38% is tonality or HOW we say our words, and only 7% is the content or words we choose to speak.

Researchers at the Boston University Medical School studied films of people having conversations. The researchers noticed that the people talking began (unconsciously) to co-ordinate their movements (including finger movements, eye blinks and head nods.) When they were being monitored using electroencephalographs, they found some of their brain waves were spiking at the same moment also. As the conversations progressed, these people were getting into a deeper level rapport with each other, and didn’t even have a clue to what was going on, this is because we communicate our ideas and concepts at this 93% UN-conscious level, but believe the words we speak actually hold the meaning to our communication.

NLP rapport skills teach us how to communicate at that unconscious level. Mirroring, matching, pacing and leading skills will enable you to become “like” the other person. Anthony Robbins stated: “People like each other when they tend to be like each other.” NLP teaches how to mirror and match that 55% physiology, 38% tonality and 7% predicates or process words.

The key to establishing rapport is an ability to enter another person’s world by assuming a similar state of mind. The first thing to do is to become more like the other person by matching and mirroring the person’s behaviors — body language, voice, words etc. Matching and mirroring is a powerful way of getting an appreciation of how the other person is seeing/experiencing the world.

Some people find the idea of matching another person uncomfortable and they feel that they are trying to fool or take advantage of the other person. To overcome this uneasiness, realize that matching is a natural part of the rapport building process and that you are doing it unconsciously every day with your close family and friends. Each day gradually increase your conscious use of matching at a pace that is comfortable and ethical for you. Matching done with integrity and respect creates positive feelings and responses in you and others. Rapport is the ability to enter someone else’s world, to make him feel you understand him, and that there is a strong connection between the two of you.

The purpose of the following exercises is to provide some experience with the basic processes and procedures of modeling. They primarily focus on the information gathering phase of the modeling process, and cover a range of modeling skills, including “implicit” and “explicit” modeling formats, and the use of multiple perceptual positions to gather different types and levels of information about a particular performance.

Mirroring Exercise

Mirroring is a method of building a strong “second position” with someone else. It is a fundamental skill for modeling another person and for developing intuitions about the person’s internal experience. To get a sense of the influence and effects of mirroring, try out the following exercise.

1. Choose a partner, or person to converse with. Do not tell the person initially that you will be mirroring him or her during the conversation.

2. Enter into a conversation with the person, asking for his or her opinions about various subjects.

3. As you are conversing, begin to subtly mirror the other person’s physiology (including voice tone and tempo). [Hint: This can be most easily done in the context of ‘active listening’; that is, reflecting back statements the person has made, by commenting, “So what you are saying is….”, and then stating your understanding of the person’s opinion.]

4. When you are fully mirroring, you will be sitting in the same posture, using the same types of gestures, speaking at a similar speed and volume, and in a similar voice tone range, as the other person. If you are completely mirroring the other person, you may even be breathing at the same rate and pattern as the other. Notice how it feels when you have reached this level of deep rapport.

5. One way to test your degree of rapport is by “second guessing” the other person’s opinion on a couple of subjects that you have not yet discussed. Often mirroring will give you access to information that is being unconsciously communicated and received, and you will “pick up” information about the other person without being consciously aware of how you got it. This is why mirroring is such a powerful tool for modeling.

6. To get another sense of the influence mirroring and matching has on your interaction; try out abruptly mismatching the other person, in posture, gestures, voice tone and breathing. Both you and your partner should experience quite a jolt if you do this, and feel as if your quality of rapport has changed dramatically.

7. Before concluding your conversation and letting your partner in on what you were doing, make sure you have reestablished rapport by once again physically mirroring your partner.

One way to help rapport to develop is to mirror the micro-behaviors of those we wish to influence. Any observable behavior can be mirrored, for example:

Body posture

Spinal alignment

Hand gestures

Head tilt

Blink rate

Facial expression

Energy level

Breathing rate

Vocal qualities (volume, tonality, rhythm)

Key word phrases or predicates

Anything else that you can observe…

To mirror another person, merely select the behavior or quality you wish to mirror, and then do that behavior. If you choose to mirror head tilt, when the person moves their head, wait a few moments, then move yours to the same angle. The effect should be as though the other person is looking in a mirror.

To mirror a person who has raised his right hand, you would raise your left hand (i.e. mirror image). To match this same person, you would raise your right-hand (doing exactly the same as the other person). Some practitioners see a time difference between mirroring and matching. For example, if someone makes hand gestures while they are speaking, you would wait until it was your turn to speak before making similar (matching) hand gestures.

The fact that you’ve read this far means that you can see the benefits of increasing your rapport skills. Reading is sadly not enough – practice is the key to building skill, so do the exercises. When you first start the practice of mirroring, you may have to pay some conscious attention to what you’re doing. After a while, however, you will start to catch yourself doing it unconsciously. This is where you really begin to build rapport elegantly!

And at times when a gesture is idiosyncratic to that person or otherwise to obvious, you can do crossover matching. Meaning, if they adjust their glasses, and you don’t wear any, then just move your foot. When you crossover match/mirror, you match/mirror a portion of the other person’s body, with a different portion of your own body. This is best to do when you are matching someone’s rate of breathing. You can use your finger to pace the rhythm of their breath. When matching or mirroring someone’s voice, do that with their tonality, volume, and the rate at which they speak. And remember you don’t have to do all of these things, just one or two will be enough to create rapport in most cases.

Skilled communicators have a wide range of behaviors they can mirror to build rapport. You can find a way to mirror virtually anything you can observe. When this is done elegantly, it is out of consciousness for the other person.

o However, a few notes of caution are appropriate:

o Mirroring is not the same as mimicry.

o It should be subtle and respectful.

o Mirroring can lead to you sharing the other person’s experience.

o Avoid mirroring people who are in distress or who have severe mental issues.

o Mirroring builds a deep sense of trust quickly, so use it with responsibility.

Practice with friends and family members to start and begin to match different aspects of their posture, gestures, voice and words. Have fun with it and notice if they begin to respond to your matching. At work or social events, start by matching one specific behavior, and once they and you feel comfortable, begin to add on another. With people whom you already have a sense of rapport, notice how often you naturally match their posture, gestures, tone of voice or words, This is because matching and mirroring comes naturally. Your outcome then should be to create rapport with anyone at any given moment, having it become automatic whenever you wish to deepen that sense of rapport.

Exercise 1

Practice mirroring the micro-behaviors of people on television (chat shows & interviews are ideal.) You may be surprised at how quickly you can become comfortable as you subtly mirror the behaviors of others.

Exercise 2

Choose a safe situation to practice mirroring an element of someone else’s behavior. When you have mirrored them for a while, and think you are in rapport with the person, scratch your nose. If they lift their hand to their face within the next minute or so, congratulate yourself – you have led their behavior!

Exercise 3

Increase the range of behaviors that you can mirror, and introduce deliberate rapport-building into situations where it will benefit you and others. Use your common sense and choose low-risk situations to practice in.)

Exercise 4

During a conversation with another person; choose one of their behaviors (e.g. breathing rate) to cross-over match with one of your behaviors (e.g. speaking rate.) Notice how quickly the sense of connection develops!

Backtracking is another excellent skill to learn in order to maintain and deepen rapport. When you are in conversation with another person, whether it be business or personal, take the opportunity to recite back to the person the information you’re receiving. This lets the person know that you were listening and you understand without judgment. It also allows you a chance to ensure your understanding and/or ask for clarification.

Backtracking is the thread that tightens and deepens rapport. Backtracking is repeating back the essence, not verbatim, of what the person is attempting to communicate. There will be times when you’re backtracking, and the other person will add on or correct you. Being corrected will only strengthen rapport because you’ll then backtrack again and have the person really feel you understand. There is also the possibility being corrected will cause you to lose rapport. However, losing rapport is just like losing your balance. You falter, recover, and get back into it again. When you do lose rapport you’ll find a way to regain it. There may also be times you want to be “out” of rapport with someone.

For example if it isn’t healthy for you to be around certain people, you are held hostage at a cocktail party or you are doing it for effect. Typically people think the way to break rapport is to be demeaning or disagree. Although that may work I recommend mismatching. This means intentionally mismatch posture, breathing, key words/gestures, and voice quality. Rely on mismatching the nonverbal communication and you will be out of rapport. For those of you who like experiments try this: Disagree strongly and maintain rapport. Or agree completely while breaking rapport. And all experimenting should be done in a non-critical environment without judgment.

The key element in establishing, building, deepening and maintaining rapport is your ability to pay attention to the responses you receive. One presupposition of NLP, or assumed rules is; “Communication is the response we receive back, NOT our intention given.”

Lastly; behind any technique there must be an authenticity of caring and real concern for the other person. (See “Technicians Need Not Apply,”Anchor Point 1987.) If you practice these skills and have no real interest in the other person, rapport will not develop. If you don’t pay attention to the other person it doesn’t matter how proficient you become in your NLP techniques. It is the responses you get in return and your own flexibility that hold the ultimate power in establishing, maintaining and deepening rapport.

Can a Marriage Be Saved by Moving Out? My Opinion Based on Experience

I recently received a question from a wife who wanted to know whether she or her husband should move out in a last ditch effort to save the marriage.  They had apparently reached the point where the relationship was only going backward rather than forward and things between them were rapidly getting worse.  The wife wondered if perhaps some time apart would be beneficial.  Perhaps this would give them both the time to calm down and to see things more objectively.

The danger with one of them moving out, of course, was that the person who left would never come back and that the moving out would only be the first step towards a divorce.  This was something that needed to be fully considered and weighed with the fact that, as it stood now, nothing was really changing or getting better.  In the following article, I’ll discuss ways to strike a balance between taking a calming break and allowing moving up to be the first step toward breaking up the marriage. I’ll also share my experience and opinion on the subject.

Why Moving Out Can Work To Save Your Marriage, But Often Doesn’t:  My husband actually moved out for a time.  But, soon thereafter, as it became obvious that nothing was changing or getting better, he filed for divorce.  So, we were off to a really bad start and we fell right into the trap that many couples who try the move out strategy fall into.

The most important thing to accomplish in one of you moving out is to allow the pause to make the situation a bit more clear.  The hope is that the break in fighting, disagreeing, or going round and round in circles is broken so that you aren’t repeating the same negative cycles and never making any real or positive change.   The hope is that, since you aren’t putting all of your focus on just engaging, you are able to be more objective and proactive so that you can work on the issues rather than working on butting heads with one another.

This is the idea anyway, but many couples never even get close to this.  Why? Because they don’t clearly define their goals and desires before one of them actually move out.  Maybe the leaving was done in anger or haste and there was really no time to do this.  Maybe no one really wanted to have this awkward conversation.  However, if you don’t at least try to set clear objectives, then you run the risk of just sort of wandering along and leaving each other to your own devices.

And, often what happens here is that you’ll sort of wander along aimlessly just waiting to see what happens. Then, when nothing really does one or both of the spouses will assume that this is “just not working” and one of them will pull the trigger on formalizing the separation or filing for divorce.  This is so typical but so avoidable.

Walking The Line Between Making Progress And Trying Too Hard: As if I haven’t already given you a lot to think about, here’s something else.  One of your objectives should be to create an environment in which your spouse will begin to perceive that you are desirable and worth fighting for or coming back to.  Many people know this deep down, but they will go about accomplishing this in the wrong way.  They will “check in” or cling too much.  Their actions will make it very clear that their main focus right now is to just get their spouse back home as soon as possible rather than putting in the effort to really change anything or to bring about any improvements.  Most spouses will see right through this and will then resist even more. This is exactly what happened to me.  My clinging and following only made me seem more unstable and therefore unattractive.

The better tactic to take is to really and truly try to improve both the marriage and YOURSELF during this break.  Don’t just tell them that you are out and handling things actually do it. I know it can be very difficult and I know that most days, you just will not feel like this.  But, you want for your spouse to see that you are capable, you are strong, and that you think enough of yourself to place yourself as a priority.  And, this will often show your spouse little images of you as they used to know you – active, engaged, and exciting. I lucked into this method and I truly needed an instruction manual to remind me to stay on track.  But, once I got the hang of this, it worked beautifully.

Accomplishing The Same Thing As Moving Out Without Any One Needing To Leave:  I will admit that sometimes it does reach the point where one of you moving out is the only reasonable alternative. But, other times, you can take a crack at one of you going away for a few days, or visiting family or friends.  Or, you can both vow to put all of the conflict on hold and just focus on yourselves for a while.  It really is advisable to take a break to place calm in this situation.  And, it can also help to allow them to have the time and the distance to miss you.

But, I always advise you to try the alternatives first – giving space while no one leaves – before one person actually leaves the home.  There is certainly risk involved with this.  But, sometimes it is worth that risk when it’s done correctly and actually saves the marriage rather than ends it.

Why Your Music Management Contract Should Include a Sunset Clause

Whether you're a music manager or an aspiring musician, I believe you should always hope for the best when you sign your music management contract. After all, your partnership signals the beginning of some very great things. With lots of hard work and a little time, a manager and a musician can accomplish a lot together.

Of course, it does not always work out that way. The reality is that even successful musicians do not always stay with the manager that bought them to the first big break in their careers. Managers and clients often separate when a record label demands that a signed action bring in experienced supervision before cutting an advance check. Other times, managers that are tremendously effective for clients in their home region can get stretched too far when their clients start touring nationally. And, in the worst cases, managers and clients start behaving poorly towards each other after a personal dispute.

Whatever the reason for a split between a music manager and an artist, both parties must protect themselves from exploitation by adopting a "sunset clause" in their music management contract. A sunset clause recognizes the contribution that a manager has made to an artist's career, while leaving the door open for artists to effectively void their agreement and work with other professional advisers.

In most cases, the "sunset" refers to the amount of commission paid to a manager over the two years after a split. Most music industry professionals agree that it can take two years for a band and their new management to put a new strategy in place. Therefore, a sunset clause typically grants the old manager full commission for six months following the split, stepped down by a third every six months until the former manager no longer can claim a commission.

Without a sunset clause, a band could split with their management and still find themselves liable for paying commissions of twenty percent or more for a period of up to seven years. Some unscrupulous managers sign transactions with clients, only to perform no obligations and sue for management decisions. On the other hand, an effective manager can use the sunset clause to recoup their investment of time and money when a client becomes successful enough to warrant signing on with a larger, more experienced management team. The sunset cause forces both parties to take their relationship seriously, while allowing for the possibility that a band and their manager might grow apart before the end of their traditional seven-year contract term.

The 12 Easiest Vegetables to Grow in Home Gardens Or Containers For First Time Gardeners

A lot of people, myself included, are growing our own vegetables to beat the credit crunch. And why not? Planting a few seeds in containers, in your backyard or in your garden will yield delicious, organic vegetables – and can save money, too! Growing organic vegetables is easier than you think. Here are the 12 vegetables you will have no problem planting, tending for and harvesting in your own garden, even if you are a first-time gardener!

#1. Radish

These are particularly easy to grow and can be intercropped with rows of lettuce to take up a minimum amount of space! Great thing about radishes is that very few pests bother them. Choose a sunny, sheltered position in soil, well fed with organic matter. Sow the seed thinly, evenly at ½ inch below the soil’s surface with one inch of space between each. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing and after the seeds emerge water them lightly every couple days. Radishes are a great source of potassium, folic acid, magnesium and calcium, and are perfect in salad dressings or as a garnish for salads. Radishes are fast growers and should be ready to pull in several weeks.

#2. Zucchini/ Squash

Zucchini and squash do well in most climates and they need very little special attention. If you plant zucchini you’ll could end up with way more than they can even eat!

Zucchini and squash are very low in calories but full of potassium, manganese and folate. Sow several zucchini seeds in a heap pile of composted soil a foot high and a couple feet wide. Space each heap pile approximately 3 feet apart, water them heavily every other day and wait for them to sprout in a couple weeks. They should be ready to harvest about a month later. For any early start sow the seeds singly about 1/2 in (1.25cm) deep, in small pots and place in a temperature of 65-70F (18-21C). After germination of seeds, grow on in a well lit spot, harden off and plant out after the last spring frost when the weather is warm.

#3. Carrots

Carrots tend to be pest free and need little attention. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, antioxidants, carotene and dietary. Dig a hole less than an inch deep and plant a couple of seeds in each, and leave several inches in between holes. Thin out in stages to 4-6in (10-15cm) apart. Keep the soil moist but remember to water the carrots less as they begin to reach maturity.

#4. Spinach

A highly nutritious and easily grown crop, high in both calcium and iron. Spinach can be eaten plain, cooked, and made into a chip dip. Turn over the soil with compost and plant seeds less than an inch deep, placing them at least 4 inches apart to give room for growth. Pick young leaves regularly. Sow the soil a couple more times in the first month and keep this area well-watered.

#5. Peas

Peas are another high-yield crop, both sweet peas and sugar peas. Other than fruit flies, these guys attract very few pests. A good source of vitamins A, B and C. Cultivate the soil just prior to sowing top dress with a balanced fertilizer. Keep in mind that your soil must drain well in order for peas for flourish. Space each seed several inches apart and sow them one inch deep. Freshly planted seeds require 1/2 inch of water every week, while more mature plants need a full inch. Any surplus peas can be frozen very successfully.

#6. Peppers

Peppers contain nutrients like thiamin and manganese. Peppers can be stuffed with meat and rice or used in salsa and pasta, and raw in salads. Till the soil with compost and Epsom salts, this will make it rich in magnesium to help the peppers develop healthily. Peppers can be produced outside in growing bags, large pots etc. Since they grow best in warm soil, sow the seeds a foot or more apart in raised beds or containers. Water them frequently, keeping the soil moist, or they may taste bitter once harvested.

#7. Lettuce/ Baby Greens

Lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to grow; you just have to plant the seeds, water and watch how fast it grows. Lettuce is a good source of folic acid and vitamin A, used as the main ingredient mostly in salads, but also can be stuffed with various ingredients to make a lettuce wrap or top sandwiches, hamburgers and tacos. When cultivating the soil with nutrient-rich compost, break up any chunks and remove debris. Make sure that seeds are planted between 8 and 16 inches apart and water them every morning. Avoid doing so at night because this could cause disease. Loose-leaf varieties are ready to start cutting about seven weeks after sowing.

Baby greens are simply greens that are harvested while they are still young and tender. They are true instant gratification vegetables – you’ll be harvesting your first salad in under a month! Sprinkle the seeds as thinly as possible across the soil in a 2- to 3-inch wide band. Space rows of baby greens 6 to 8 inches apart. Or plant baby greens in a pot, and cut your salad fresh every night!

#8. Onion

Rich in dietary fiber, folate and vitamin C, onion need little care – just give them plenty of water. Plow the soil a foot deep and get rid of debris. The easiest way to grow onions is from sets which are small onions. Plant sets so that the tip is showing about 5in (13cm) apart in rows 12in (30cm) apart. Or, plant the seeds a couple centimeters deep and several inches apart. Weed this area frequently but gently and provide them with about an inch of water every week.

#9. Beets

Beets (beetroots) can be peeled, steamed, and then eaten warm with butter; cooked, pickled, and then eaten cold as a condiment; or peeled, shredded raw, and then eaten as a salad.. Betanin, one of the primary nutrients in this deep red or purple vegetable, can help lower blood pressure. Clean and strengthen the seeds by soaking them in water at room temperature for a day. Plow the soil and remove any stones from the top 3 feet. Plant each seed 2in (5cm) apart, thin out to 4in (10cm) apart and water them at least once every day.

#10. Broccoli

For the most part doesn’t need a lot of special care, broccoli is easily grown vegetable that gives the best return for the space it occupies and is cropped when other green vegetables are in short supply. One row of 15ft (4.5m) will accommodate six plants to give self-sufficiency for a family of four. Sow broccoli seed in spring in a seed bed ½in (1.25cm) deep and transplant when the seedlings are about 4in (10cm) tall 2ft (60cm) apart each way.

#11. Tomatoes

There are many benefits to growing tomatoes – they’re tasty, they9re good for you, and the dollar value of the yield can be very significant. Tomatoes are rich in nutrients like niacin, potassium and phosphorous, antioxidants like lycopene, anthocyanin and carotene, and vitamins A, C and E.

Sow the seed just below the surface in a tray of peat-based compost. When the seedlings have made two pairs of true leaves prick them out into 3in (7.5cm) pots and place them in a light, warm place indoors (like windowsill). After the last danger of frost has passed, pick a spot in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight and test the soil’s pH level – it needs to be between 6 and 7. (To decrease pH level add sulfur, to increase it add lime). Spread compost over this area and mix it with the soil. After hardening off, set tomato plants 2ft (60cm) apart in rows 3ft (90cm) apart, bush plants 3ft (90cm) apart. Water them a couple times per week.

Tomatoes do need a little more attention then the other vegetables on the list. However, for the little bit attention that tomatoes do need, you get an incredible reward in the large amount of fruit that they produce. To help you get started, here is a complete guide to growing tomatoes

#12. Herbs

There are many herbs including thyme, rosemary, basil, mint, sage, chives, parsley and oregano that need very little attention and can be grown successfully in containers on a patio, balcony or terrace. Purchase some of your favorite small herb plants from your local nursery and get a container that is at least 6-12 inches deep. You can plant multiple herbs in a wide or long container or use at least a 6″ pot for individual plants and you will enjoy not only their fragrance and beauty but also their culinary benefits. Water sparingly because herbs don’t like to sit in wet soil.

If you are a first time gardener, start slow with any of the vegetables I’ve mentioned. Soon, you will gain confidence and have a beautiful organic vegetable garden!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Forced Air Heater

If you want to provide warmth to your home or offices in a more conventional way then don’t look beyond installing a Forced Air Heater as these units are considered to be popular in terms of home heating solutions provider. These units are generally preferred over other methods because of its low-cost of installation and are effective in fast heat delivery. These units provide the necessary warmth to the desired areas by passing the air through a heat source using a fan or a blower.

Heating your home, garage or office by using a forced air heater is by far the most common type of heating and cooling system. The reason why these products are generally preferred over others is they can run on various types of fuel sources from diesel to natural gas to gasoline to propane to electricity to kerosene to oil. When you compare them with their counterparts you will find them to be relatively compact in size and require an electric power supply for starting and generating heat.

Forced Air Heaters due to its portability and compact size are easy to carry and can be used in your home, car or basement. These units are available in a variety of heating capacity on the basis of which it can provide warmth to small as well as large areas. These heaters are also available in a wide range of sizes and shapes and because of the portable nature can be easily moved around the house or work place. Now-a-days these units are also being used in the industrial sector for providing warmth in the desired areas.

Advantages of Forced Air Heaters

1. The main advantage of having this system is it can be used for dual purpose both in the winters as well as summers. In the winter months it can be used to provide warmth into different rooms by blowing hot air via metal ducts and vents. Similarly, in the summers the same system can easily be used for cooling your rooms as well.

2. This system features thermostat controls that can be pre set for maintaining desired temperature in the room. If at all the room temperature drops below the desired levels, the thermostat control automatically supplies fuel to the burners which produces heat which is again blown through the ducts.

3. Moreover with the help of these units you can easily filter the air and if necessary you can also humidify and dehumidify the air inside the room.

4. This system provides one of the most cost-effective way to heat a home or office as it is rather inexpensive to install and can also be used as an air conditioner in the summers. Because of these reasons these units are commonly found in Northern America.

Disadvantages of Forced Air Heaters

1. As this system distributes heat through ducts and vents, your wall space gets occupied due to it.

2. To force air into the rooms, the system uses a powerful fan which sometimes produces loud noise. The continuous noise can be a bit annoying for you and your neighbors.

3. The air that is blown by the system can be hazardous and there is every possibility of the air bringing all sorts of pollens and allergy to your home and office.

4. The heat distribution process is somewhat uneven due to which your rooms may experience warmer and colder spots.

5. You need to filter the air on a regular basis and the system also requires a bit of regular maintenance.

Advantages and Uses of Regenerative Blowers

Regenerative blowers have created a new definition in the field of air handling equipment. The principle on which it functions is a considerable solution for pushing larger volume of air at lower pressure or vacuum. Therefore, the device can be an effective replacement for vacuum pumps. Working on different principles from those of vacuum pumps, regenerative blowers actually regenerate air molecules with a non-positive displacement method for creating vacuum or pressure. Until now, the technology of this equipment, though, has not been understood widely, yet when necessities matching with the potentialities of this gadget arise it becomes unparalleled.

This is also known as side channel blowers and ring compressors. The name explains the way of their physical construction. The term regenerative comes from their basic mode of operation system, as these are actually a direct drive design opposed to electric motor or gas engine belt drive. The impeller in monobloc is attached right on the electric motor shaft and with that rotates at the speed of 2900-3500 rpm. As the impeller starts rotating air is captured between each blade it consists of on its circumference, and is pushed to and fro into the channels. Immediately, the air returns to the blades’ base, a process repetition and continuation which enables the device to produce its pressure or vacuum strength.

Regenerating Blower gives great benefit to the engineers, by the power of working system they act on. As well as, this equipment does not require frequent monitoring and maintenance. The only part that moves is the impeller which does not make contact with the housing channels, and so is wear-free. The only wearing part that is found in these devices is the self-lubricated bearings. Regenerative blowers are completely oil less, and do not have any complicated in or out valve. Moreover, these blowers can be mounted on any surface paying little heed to the probable noise produced.

The failure of the majority of the blowers, however, happens because of improper installation and operation. On account of its less number of moving parts chances of their going inactive are very low. The blowers have close tolerance internally devised between the impeller and housing, so inserting any external thing can harm the equipment. In the process of ingesting debris the blowers can face a failure by particles wedged between the impeller and housing. To overcome this situation a filter of the thickness of 10 micron should always be used. Leading to over pressurization is another issue to meet the gadget’s failure. Some blowers have the system of air passing through them to remain cool. If this passing does not work properly the device can go faulty. A relief valve is helpful in this regard.

Regenerative Blower is employed in many sectors for its numerous advantages. These sectors include vacuum packing, vacuum lifting, sewage aeration, printing presses, spas, pond aeration, industrial vacuum systems, dust removal and soil vapor removal. In any case where high airflow along with low vacuum is required these blowers provide a substantial solution.
