Wallace Nutting Hand – Colored Photographs

Wallace Nutting sold more hand-colored photographs during America’s 1900-1940 “Golden Age of Hand-Colored Photography” than any other photographer of his time. It is estimated that between 5,000,000-10,000,000 of his pictures decorated the walls of middle class American homes during the early 20th century. Why was Wallace Nutting so successful? And why are his pictures still being widely collected today? This article represents a basic introduction into the world of Wallace Nutting Pictures.

It was shortly after 1900 that Wallace Nutting retired from the ministry due to ill health (he was a Congregational Minister in Providence RI at the time). As part of his recovery, he began touring the New England countryside by carriage or car, taking photographs of rural New England. Nutting was one of the first to recognize that the American scene was changing. Industrialization was altering the way our country looked and our pure and picturesque landscape would never look the same again. He seemed to feel it his divine calling to record the beauty of America for future generations.

Beginning first in Vermont, then Massachusetts and Connecticut, and eventually throughout the rest of New England, Nutting began photographing country lanes, streams, rivers, lakes, orchards, blossoms, birches, and mountains. Wallace Nutting would take the photograph, assign a title, and instruct his colorists how it should be hand-tinted. Each picture that met Nutting’s high standards of color, composition, and taste would be affixed to its matting and signed by his employees with the distinctive “Wallace Nutting” name. (He hardly ever signed any pictures by himself). Those pictures that did not meet his strict standards were destroyed. Beginning first with outdoor (Exterior) scenes in New England, Nutting eventually traveled throughout the United States and Europe, taking photographs in 26 states and 17 foreign countries between 1900-1935. Overall, he took more than 50,000 pictures, 10,000 of which he felt met his high standards. The balance were destroyed.

It was around 1905 that Nutting began taking his first indoor (Interior) pictures. Supposedly one day while it was raining outside, Mrs. Nutting suggested that he take a more “Personable” picture indoors. So, he set up a colonial scene, near a kitchen hearth, had an employee dress up in a colonial fashion, and took several different pictures. These sold relatively easily which encouraged him to expand more into this area. Nutting’s love of antiques, his passion for the pilgrim period, and his unquestionable desire to turn a profit led him to eventually purchase and restore five colonial homes:

  • Webb House, Wethersfield, CT
  • Wentworth-Gardner House, Portsmouth, NH
  • Cutler-Bartlett House, Newburyport, MA
  • Hazen-Garrison House, Haverhill, MA
  • Saugus Iron Works (Broadhearth), Saugus, MA

Nutting purchased these homes because he felt each represented a different period of early colonial American style and taste. It was here, along with his own homes Nuttinghame (Southbury, CT) and Nuttingholme (Framingham, MA), that the majority of his Interior pictures were taken. Nutting’s desire to provide the most correct and appropriate settings for his Interior scenes led him in his quest to gather one of the best collections of early American furniture ever assembled. He would use the best examples of early American furniture in his Interior scenes and, when he couldn’t find it, he would reproduce it. (We’ll focus on his reproduction furniture in a subsequent article).

Working in Southbury CT from 1905-12, and then in Framingham MA from 1912 until his death in 1941, Nutting sold literally millions of his hand-colored photographs. He claims to have sold around 10,000,000 pictures although, knowing his habit of exaggeration, that number is probably somewhat high.

Whatever the true number, it was large. Wallace Nutting pictures were sometimes called “poor man’s prints“. Sold throughout the first quarter of the 20th century, well before the invention of color photography, these pictures initially sold literally for pennies. His market was primarily the middle and lower middle classes…those households which could not afford finer forms of art. Because of their low price, Wallace Nutting pictures were purchased in large numbers. By 1925, hardly an American middle-class household was without one as they were purchased as gifts for weddings, showers, Christmas, birthdays, and for just about any other reason imaginable.

Nutting sold many pictures directly through his studios where he also provided his own framing services. But he also sold his pictures through many other outlets as well: department stores, drug stores, and gift shops, all around the country. He even had full-time salesmen on the road whose sole job was to sell his pictures to these retail establishments. Salesmen whom, he claims, sold enough pictures to retire quite handsomely themselves.

The height of Wallace Nutting picture popularity was 1915-25. During this time Nutting had nearly 100 colorists in his employment, along with another 100 employees who acted as framers, matters, salesmen, management, and assorted administrative office personnel. Let there be no mistake about it…Wallace Nutting’s pictures were big business. But by the late 1920’s, people began to tire of Wallace Nutting. As with any other fashion or style, tastes began to change with time. Wallace Nutting pictures became passé and sales showed a steady decline. Even the introduction of different matting styles, greeting cards, pen-type silhouettes, and lower priced machine-produced process prints could not rejuvenate sales.

The Wall Street crash of 1929 and the following depression all but sealed the fate of the Wallace Nutting picture business. Although it remained in operation even after his death, the output was inconsequential after the early 1930’s. Over the years, millions of Wallace Nutting pictures were probably thrown away. Many of those that remain show the signs of 60-90 years of wear after being stored in attics and basements, with water stains, broken glass, dust, dirt, and mildew.

As the original owners of Wallace Nutting pictures have grown older or passed on, their Wallace Nutting pictures have also been passed on to another generation. Some were given directly as gifts, others were inherited by children and grandchildren. Those that weren’t passed along to families were sold at auctions, estate sales, tag sales, and flea markets where they re-entered the collectibles mainstream during the 1975-2000 period.

What are collectors looking for? Just as in Wallace Nutting’s time, Exterior scenes have the widest appeal. Interior scenes have a more limited appeal, but since they are rarer, they typically command a higher price than Exterior scenes. However, we have seen that as America’s fascination with the “Country” look has diminished over the past 5-10 years, interest in Nutting’s Interior scenes has softened as well.

The most desirable pictures to serious Nutting collectors are Miscellaneous Unusual Scenes. These are pictures which fall outside the more standard Interior and Exterior scenes: Architecturals, Children, Florals, Foreign, Men, Seascapes, Snow scenes, and a select few geographical rarities. Nutting’s original sales in these categories were significantly lower than with his Exterior and Interior scenes, hence their “/i>rarity” attracts collectors. Just as in other areas of collecting, the rarest examples, in the best condition, are the easiest to sell, regardless of price. But just as important as rarity and subject matter is condition. Collectors want pieces in excellent condition and imperfections such as water stains, blemishes, poor coloring, or damaged frames can all significantly reduce value.

As of 2010 the Auction record for a Wallace Nutting hand-colored photograph stands at $9,300.00, which is quite reasonable within the high-priced world of Antiques & Collectibles. However, as the economy has softened, so too have Wallace Nutting prices and perhaps 90% of Wallace Nutting pictures are selling in today’s market for less than $150-$200. And many can be had for $50-$75 or less. Which means that if you appreciate Wallace Nutting Pictures, this is probably the best time to buy them in the past 25 years.

How to Shave Your Pubic Hair – A Woman’s Guide

If you are reading this article, I will assume that you are a first-timer and have never taken scissors, a razor, an electric shaver or anything else to the fuzz growing between your legs. It may be in a state of complete chaos and you’re wondering how things ever got so out of control…but the important thing is that you’ve taken that first step and decided to shave.

Before you get started, you may want to take some time to consider the various hair styles and designs you can select when it comes to taking this hair removal plunge. There is so much to cover, we’ve made a completely separate article about it. In the past, it has been common to just trim or pluck the bikini area, go with a basic landing strip pattern or simply shave it all off. But in the 21st century, people are taking a much more creative approach to pubic hair grooming; shaving or waxing intricate patterns into their hair and even coloring it.

You’ll should gather everything you’ll need in the bathroom (generally the best place to do this task) so you don’t need to stop in the middle of the process to fetch something. I will be focusing on shaving with a personal razor (non-electric) and shaving cream for the majority of this article. I personally use the Gillette Venus Vibrance and find it leaves a very smooth shave. If you want to save a few bucks on razor blades, you don’t need to buy their special Vibrance blades because they are no different than the original Venus ones aside from coloring – but don’t tell Gillette I told you that!

Now it’s time to get down to business. One of the first things you will want to do is trim down your pubic hair with a pair of clean scissors or an electric razor. (If you’ve shaved before and your pubic hair isn’t very long, you can skip this first step and just start with the main event.) You want your scissors or razor to be clean so you don’t cause yourself any unnecessary risks of infection. When you shave, it is likely that tiny nicks will develop (some of them so tiny you won’t even see them) and if you’re using scissors you were just using to prune flowers in your garden or an electric razor you used on your dog, your chances of a bacterial infection are certainly going to be elevated.

“Trim down” means what it sounds like. The goal is not to remove all your pubic hair in this step but to thin the trees back so you can get an effective shave with your razor later on. Otherwise you will end up cleaning your razor many, many times to keep the blade exposed and may end up snagging hairs which is never pleasant. You may want to do the trimming over the toilet bowl or in your shower, but you will certainly want to collect the hair you trim off somehow. If you are planning to be waxed instead of shaving, your pubic hair should be around one quarter of an inch long but no shorter than one eighth of an inch.

If you haven’t done so already, why not check out your hair situation now in the mirror and see how things are going? You may find that after a trim, you have reached a pubic hair length which you are comfortable with. It’s your hair and if you’re not ready to go completely bare yet, there’s no pressure. But if you are ready to go on, so am I.

It’s now time to get wet and lather up. I prefer to shave in the shower after I’ve washed my hair because it gives the skin a bit of time to warm up and lets the steam of the warm shower soften the skin. You could also take a bath first but should shave at the end when you are ready to drain the water. I also usually put one leg up on the side of the bathtub or on a stool or step in the shower so I have better access to everything.

Cover your pubic hair with shaving oil, jelly or lather to form a layer of lubrication between your skin and the razor. I like to use shaving oil and jelly because I can feel the razor sliding over the skin smoothly, without leaving cuts and nicks. If you are desperate, hair conditioner can also be used but for best results I’d only use it in a real emergency.

You may also want to give some consideration to the type of shaving matter you use and what skin types it is recommended for. My favorite products are Venereous Shaving Oil and Venereous Shaving Jelly from Newf Brand. You can use them together, the jelly layered over the oil, or you can use each of them separately. Using them together just gives you an extra layer of shaving protection against nicks and leaves the skin extra moisturized. Plus neither of these products foam so you can actually see what you’re shaving which is very useful.

Some gels have mint and other ingredients in them which may not be suitable for the sensitive skin in your nether regions. I have not had any adverse reactions using men’s shaving gel versus women’s but I generally select a product for sensitive skin. Some women’s shaving gels state on the label that they are recommended to be used in the bikini zone and generally have a more feminine scent to them.

I usually cover the entire area I am going to shave at the beginning so I don’t need to set the razor down constantly and fiddle with the container of shaving gel. You can always go back and add more shaving oil later, but be careful with some gels and creams because if you leave leave them on too long, you may start to notice a burning sensation on your skin. If that occurs, wash the lather off immediately and give your skin a few moments to recuperate. If you have another shaving lather, you may want to use it for the rest of the process and I would recommend not using the shaving lather which burns you again in the future for this sensitive area.

Now you’re ready to put the blade to your skin. Don’t be scared. If you’ve shaved your legs before, you know that it can take a little time before you are fully comfortable with all the contours of your body. Shaving your mound is no different and each one varies so you may find that these steps don’t work perfectly for you or that a different order is a bit better. I’m just speaking from my personal shaving experience over the last 8 years.

Start with the top of your mound, use one hand to gently pull back the skin so it is tight and, with the razor in the other hand, shave down with the hair growth. I like to start on the sides near the crease of my legs and then work towards the center. After I’ve shaved most of my mound against the hair growth, I then shave against the growth and sometimes from side to side.

In some areas of the body, such as the armpits, hair grows in multiple directions and to get a very close shave, you need to shave in each direction of growth to get every hair at its base. But when first starting out this can increase your chances of razor burn in the end so be sure that you have plenty of lather covering your mound while doing this. Run your fingers over your mound and if it’s smooth, you’re ready to go on.

The lips can be a bit trickier although the outer labia should be similar to shaving your mound. Shaving against the hair growth usually gets most of the hairs although you may have to retrace your stroke one or twice to catch any strays. Try not to go over the skin too many times, though, as this also might cause irritation later on. If you feel the need to shave with the hair growth, be careful because you may end up nicking yourself which is quite uncomfortable.

To shave inside your labia, use your free hand to gently roll the lips open and carefully pull the razor up along the edge of your lip and around the upper ridge to get those little hairs which will really agitate your partner during oral sex if they are missed.

At this stage, you are more or less finished. You may want to reach back and give your anus a quick once over just to be thorough. This is where a second set of hands would come in very handy. In fact, you may want someone to assist you during this entire process but try not to get too carried away or you may end up with a lot more cuts than you expected.

Once you get out of the shower or the tub, you may want to use a moisturizer such as Venereous Mountain Mist to help prevent irritated skin and razor burn. Try to avoid excessively touching the area for a few hours as that may also cause irritated skin.

If you decide you love the feeling of your smoothly shaved mound, maintaining this style is simple. You will probably only want to shave every few days at first until your skin gets used to this constant new attention. If you do decide to start shaving daily right from the start, your skin may be more sensitive and irritated for the first few days that you continue this process. But as it adjusts, any discomfort and elevated levels of irritation usually subside.

Although shaving can be a bit tricky and it does take a bit of getting used to, most women love the results – and so do their partners! If you’re doing this just for someone else, don’t forget to let them know that you did go to some trouble and would really appreciate if they went out of their way to clear the forest too (if they aren’t already)!

Drake P3 – A Behavioral Profiling Tool That Would Be a Good Addition to Any Human Resources Toolkit

Drake P3 is a psychometric assessment and behavioral profiling tool that is designed to help organizations assess and select the best candidates for any given role for which they are hiring, enhance communications within an organization, optimize individual performance, and enhance team effectiveness.

Some of the key benefits of using the Drake P3 system include:

  • Better hiring decisions – the behavioral data that Drake P3 harvests from candidates enables hiring managers to make more enlightened hiring decisions
  • Improved employee productivity – Drake P3 helps managers and supervisors pinpoint key behavioral strengths and challenges of employees so they can ensure that their strengths are fully leveraged to the benefit of the organization and that their challenges are addressed through training, development, and coaching
  • Reduced employee turnover – since the majority of employee turnover has its roots in the hiring process, by enabling more enlightened hiring decisions, Drake P3 has a positive effect on an organization’s employee turnover rate

The Drake P3 system’s benefits also extend to job candidates and current employees, both of whom gain greater insights into their own behavior and into the types of roles their behavioral profiles suggest they would suit. This helps in setting realistic expectations and also in mapping out developmental pathways for candidates and employees who may be “almost” ideal for a role for which they’re applying or to which they’re aspiring.

Drake P3 Profiling Process

The Drake P3 profiling process is simple, straightforward, and quick to complete. It involves the completion of a Communication or Candidate Survey (depending on whether the individual completing it is a current employee or a job candidate), which is a self-report adjective questionnaire that takes less than 10 minutes to complete and is the source of the data for the resultant Communication/Candidate Profile that is the heart of the Drake P3 behavioral profiling system.

The Communication/Candidate Profile reports on an individual’s unique combination of five fundamental behavioral dimensions:

  • Dominance
  • Extroversion
  • Patience
  • Conformity
  • Conscientiousness

Specifically, the Profile reports on the intensity of an individual’s predisposition each individual behavioral dimension or trait – identifying his or her “high traits” and “low traits” and, in so doing, provides deep insights into how an individual is likely to perform in a given role, work with others, take direction from supervisors, as well as the degree of flex he or she can manage in each of those five behavioral areas, among other things.

And the Drake P3 system does it all in plain English.

Drake P3 is a Good Addition to the Human Resources Toolkit

The Drake P3 system – not unlike other psychometric assessment systems such as the DISC personality test and profile system – is a great way to accomplish a number of key HR objectives – effectively and efficiently.

As such, the Drake P3 system should be given consideration as an addition to any organization’s HR toolkit.

Boston Terriers and Separation Anxiety

Boston terriers have been known to develop behavior problems dealing with separation anxiety.

So what exactly is separation anxiety?

Separation Anxiety is an anxiety disorder characterized by a state of extreme panic induced from the dog’s separation or detachment from his owners.

So to put simply, when you leave the house, your BT launches into a state of nervous anxiety which escalates exceedingly quick.

Boston terriers are social animals and need plenty of companionship and social interaction to keep them happy and pleased. No Boston terrier likes to be left alone for prolonged amounts of time, but some handle it a lot worse than others.

The number 1 cause of separation anxiety for Boston terriers is neglect. If you are gone a lot more than you are there in your BT’s life, separation anxiety is pretty much unavoidable. Your Boston requires your companionship, affection, and care to be pleased and satisfied.

Symptoms of separation anxiety are pretty distinguishing. Your Boston terrier will generally determine when you are going to leave (he’ll hear your keys jingling, he’ll see you putting on your coat, etc) and will get very anxious. He might follow you from room to room, whining, shaking, and weeping. Some BTs even become aggressive trying to stop their owners from leaving.

Once you have left, the anxious behavior will quickly worsen and normally will peak within a half an hour. He might bark endlessly, scratch and dig at the windows and doors, chew inappropriate objects, and even urinate or defecate inside the house. In intense cases, he may even self-mutilate by licking or chewing his skin until it has become raw, or pulling out his fur.

Then when you return, he will be overly excited, and will bounce around you in a frenzy of delight for a drawn-out period of time (more than the usual thirty seconds of a pleased, well-balanced Boston terrier.)

This lengthy greeting is a source of some misinterpretation. Without understanding that such a greeting actually stands for the presence of a psychological disorder, a lot of owners actually encourage their Boston to get more and more worked up upon their return (by firing up their Boston’s excitement, encouraging him to bounce around, and so forth.)

Whenever you are doing this with your Boston, you should really stop. I know that it can be tempting and very easy to do, and it seems harmless – but in actuality, you are just supporting her belief that your return is the greatest moment of the day. So he is as happy as can be when you return, but when it’s time for you to leave again, his happiness at your presence is under threat, and he gets even more distressed when you leave.

Gable, Shed or Flat – How To Choose a Roof Type?

When we were building our house in Europe I wanted a flat roof. I’ve lived in India for a while in a house with 200 square meters flat roof and it was really amazing. You can go on it and walk and look at the sleeping city in the night. Lovely.

But we did not build a flat roof.

Apparently, roof types have their specifics and will not always fit your construction project, your weather or geographic location, or your budget. In this article I’ll draw your attention to the advantages and disadvantages of the most popular roof types – gable, shed or flat roof.

The gable roof consists of two equal sloped surfaces places in front of each other. There are two flat surfaces on the other two sides and often they are just sequels of the house wall. Usually the front entrance of the house is at the same side with one of these flat surfaces. The typical pith of such roofs is between 4/12 and 10/12. More than this means a really steep gable roof.

It is most popular in the Western countries and in the entire Europe. There are reasons for this. In these areas with temperate weather the roof must serve as insulation both from heat and from cold. Gable roof is good for this because it ensures a lot of air between the sloped surfaces and the actual ceiling of the house. Many houses allow using of this intermediate space either for storing stuff or for building small garrets.

Gable roof is also good for areas which have snow. The sloped surfaces fully cover the top of the house so now snow remains on it for long which reduces the problems with moisture.

Another advantage of the gable roof is that it is relatively simple to build and rather affordable. No surprise it’s so popular!

Don’t build gable roof if you live in a very windy area. These roofs get easily damaged from hurricanes.

The flat roof, like I already said earlier is very, very cool. It’s great for the hot season when you can use it as a huge terrace. You can have a play area on it or even a small pool (be careful with pools however as you don’t want water pouring in your house). In the recent years the green roofs become very popular, and essentially they are flat roofs as well.

In areas with heavy rains and snow this roof type may require a bit more investments in insulation and drainage system. Insulation will be fairly important if you live in a very hot area as well because there is no much air between the roof and your ceiling. One option is to build a ceiling under the roof allowing a meter or so but this means more money.

If you have a lot of sun out there think about installing solar panels on your roof – they’ll pay off long-term.

Finally, the shed roof is a very simple roof with a single sloped surface. It solves the problem with snow and drainage and provides some insulation area. For most houses the shed roof (known also as lean-to roof) looks a bit strange that’s why it’s typically used in garden buildings like sheds and garages. Some houses, especially mountain huts may look good with such roof.

There are also many other roof types you may want to check out before deciding what to choose: gambrel, mansard, hip, bonnet, cross gabled and more.

Jeet Kune Do Benefits – Advantages of Learning This Martial Art

Jeet Kune Do is a martial art that was created by the legendary Bruce Lee in the late 1960s. It translates to “Way of the Intercepting Fist” and is a modification of various traditional martial arts, predominantly the Chinese system of fighting called Wing Chun, in addition to Western style boxing and fencing. There are quite a few advantages to learning this particular martial art, and they flow from Bruce Lee’s belief that a fighter should never be bound by traditional rules and should instead be able to make use of any technique that suits the situation.

Jeet Kune Do is notable in that it encourages adaptability to any situation. It is relatively easy to defend oneself from attackers when one is trained to use react to the situation at hand instead of relying on fixed techniques. In fact, this is the perfect martial art for street fighting. Further, this fighting style can be practiced by people of all ages and levels of physical fitness since the fighting style is very subtle and requires the fighter to do feints that put the opponent off guard and to conserve energy whilst fighting. The main benefit of this martial art is that it is perfect for regular people who want to feel safe as they go about their daily lives.

Another benefit of learning this style of fighting is that it improves balance and flexibility instead of merely focusing on power. As a result, the person who practices it benefits from improved co-ordination. He or she will also have improved mental focus and agility from having to quickly adapt to changing situations. Over time, the person will also notice increased mind-body harmony. A person who practices this martial art regularly will also gain a great deal of self-confidence that comes from the ability to look after oneself. Finally, this style of fighting can also help a person stay fit and healthy.

Jeet Kune Do is without doubt a very good martial art to learn but one has to dedicate time and energy to excelling in it. It is necessary to get trained from a reliable and experienced teacher or else one might miss out on the nuances of this fighting style. It is safe to say that a person who has taken the trouble to learn this martial art properly and to practice it often will be fairly unbeatable in a street fight.

Male to Female Sex Reassignment Surgery

There are a multitude of men and women around the world who strongly believe they are physically a different sex than they were born with. Such transgendered people feel they are a man or woman trapped in a body that does not match their gender.

For example, men believe they are really women trapped in men’s bodies and women believe they are men trapped in women’s bodies.

This dissonance, called gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder, is so profound and uncomfortable that most transsexuals are willing to be surgically altered.

By some estimates, roughly 1,000 Americans undergo sex reassignment surgery every year, despite its hefty price tag.

MTF Sex Reassignment Surgery

Sex reassignment surgery (male to female), also known as gender reassignment surgery or simply sex change, is a procedure that transforms males to the fairer sex physically and mentally.

The surgery is typically done to reconstruct genital organs of a man into the genitals of the opposite sex.

For trans women (male to female), genital reconstruction involves removal of penis (penectomy) and removal of the testes (orchiectomy) followed by construction of a vagina through vaginoplasty, a plastic surgery and cosmetic procedure for constructing the vagina and vaginal canal. Vagina is formed from a skin graft and the vaginal canal and opening is constructed beneath the urethral opening and prostate gland.

The sex reassignment surgery is frequently performed in conjunction with few other plastic surgeries performed on other parts of the body to change a person’s overall look. For example breast implants are added to the surgery to give the appearance of a female chest.

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is often done on men transitioning to female in order to soften their masculine lines of the face. The FFS procedures often include rhinoplasty (nose job), smoothing the jaw and forehead, softening the brow line, and altering the cheek bones.

The sex reassignment surgery candidates are first diagnosed with gender dsyphoria or associated conditions like anxiety and depression. And before undergoing the surgery, they spend a fair amount of time in counseling.

The surgery may take three hours to complete and the stitches are removed after seven to ten days.

Risks and Complications

Although most sex reassignment surgeries these days are successfully done by the skilled surgeons, producing satisfactory results aesthetically and functionally, without any major complications. However, like any other surgery this surgery also carries various minor and major complications, especially when done by less experienced surgeons.

Minor complications may include risks of infection, bleeding, postoperative pain, and loss of some of the grafted skin. A very short vagina is the common complication that can be corrected through the sigmoid colon procedure.

Serious complications associated with the sex reassignment surgery are rectovagina fistula, a condition where a hole develops between the colon and the vagina, pulmonary thromboembolism and extensive bleeding. Temporary inability to urinate and wound disruptions can also occur after the surgery.

Men who have long been thinking that they’re trapped in the wrong body male to female sex reassignment surgery can give them the chance to live in the new gender they always wanted to.

Since the cost of sex reassignment surgery can go through the roof in the United States, Canada, UK and other developed countries of the world, scores of transgendered people from different parts of the world prefer to seek sex reassignment surgery in low-income Asian countries like India and Thailand, where low living and labor cost brings the surgery cost down to a fraction of US prices.

Traveling to another country for sex reassignment surgery also gives you a chance to recuperate in luxury resorts and explore a new country virtually free, even factoring in your treatment, travel, food and lodging expenses.

Trends in Real Estate in Krabi Thailand

There have been many floods in Thailand this year. In February 2011 Krabi hit the news with very large volumes of rainfall creating mudslides and of course, the current North Thailand and Bangkok floods are still daily world news. With any disaster on this sort of scale, it is bound to have repercussions. Some Bangkok residents will want to relocate and one of the places they will look at is Krabi.

So what effect will this have on the real estate market in Thailand?

Although it’s still a little early to truly reflect on the latest flooding, one thing that we can be sure of is that this is not going to be the last. Thailand being a tropical country in the monsoon belt has always been subject to very high seasonal rainfall and whether the current extremes are a result of climate warming or just a recurring historical event is a matter for debate. What is not a matter for debate is that these events should be learnt from and planned for. Much of the actual damage in Bangkok and in fact throughout Thailand has been the result of what can only be called bad planning. Unconstrained housing development has meant that common sense has been thrown out of the window so just perhaps, the silver lining to all the current troubles is that being fresh in the mind of the public will mean that demand for developments that actually do follow regulations will increase and those created by developers who have brushed rules aside will dwindle.

Krabi, being a relatively new area for property development, has the benefit of hindsight. The local authorities have learned from the experiences of Phuket and Samui and are actually making impressive headway in designing the infrastructure for the future. Roads, electricity and water supplies and development are on the whole being well planned and constructed and planning regulations are being enforced. As long as the authorities stay on this line with the development, then Krabi for sure will enjoy a very bright future.

Many development companies are also learning from past mistakes and are realising the marketing potential of incorporating their own additional strategies into their developments. Water management, including drainage and local water supply, are high on the list but also, energy management including solar supply and good design to reduce energy consumption are becoming major selling features as potential customers begin to put more importance on both energy costs and also, very importantly, on environmental considerations.

Local development companies are also being encouraged to be proactive in the development of Krabi as a whole and the way it relates to the unique geography of Krabi. Views are being guarded to prevent the loss of the beauty which is really its main attraction as a tourist destination.

One effect of the flooding on real estate demand in Thailand as a whole is that of the demand for condominiums rather than individual houses. This makes sense as not only are you assured of safety from flooding, but also they are a more efficient use of resources, have better security, can generally be more cost effective in prime locations and make ideal rental opportunities. It makes sense to me that this trend will follow throughout Thailand rather than just being a feature of the Bangkok real estate market.

In the future, prime real estate locations in Krabi are going to become ever more difficult to find and secure. The one thing we do have to be careful about is to ensure that condominium developments don’t come at the cost of Krabi’s attractiveness to tourists. The tourism market is the main driving force behind the growth but tourists are fickle and tourist destinations are fragile and easily spoiled.

Krabi has a very bright future, it’s natural beauty, unique geography and modern infrastructure mean that it will grow. Krabi developers and the customers who will create the growth must learn from the lessons that nature is sending. The flooding in the North of Thailand are a timely lesson and should be learnt from. The next few months and how Thailand recovers from the floods in Bangkok and the North of Thailand will certainly have an effect on the number of visitors and the way in which this rebuild is managed will affect the number of those visitors who are willing to invest.

Cartomancy Seven Packs Layout; Tarot Reading With Playing Cards

Cartomancy is the art of fortune telling done with a normal Playing Card deck. The commonest form of reading in Cartomancy is the Seven packs, or Seven triplets layout. Learn how this spread is dealt, and what is says about a clients future.

Cartomancy roots in Tarot

Just as Tarot reading predates Cartomancy, the Tarot deck with its ornate Major Arcana and beautiful illustrations came long before the common playing card deck. Tarot decks were usually lovingly crafted by hand, the works of skilled artist. Playing cards were rough and simple, designed for common use and to be mass produced for everyone to have. With the Major Arcana discarded, and the court cards reduced from four per suit to three, playing cards were simply produced and became a common household pastime. But, people still wanted the ability to perform divination and read fortunes with these new cards. Readers developed a system based on the suits, derived from their Tarot readings. These traditions were passed down orally until early printers collected them, and printed simple charts of meanings to sell with their new decks.

The Seven Packs Layout

This spread, also known as the seven triples layout is dealt as follows. First a client card is chosen for the subject of the reading; either a King or Queen card, and placed in the center before the reader. Next, the remaining cards, less the Jokers, are shuffled and cut by the client. Then, the first (21) cards are dealt out in a fan shape, making seven hands or piles of three cards each. The hands are dealt one card at a time from left to right, with three hands to the left of the client card, one hand right above the card, and the last three hands fanned to the right of the client card. Each stack of three cards is then turned over and examined as a group from left to right. The three card groups are considered both individually, and also in combinations with each other to determine the reading for that particular stack.

Pack positions and their Meaning

The seven hands or packs each speak to a particular facet of the clients reading. They are read from left to right facing the client card, just as they were dealt. The first pack describes the personality and state of mind of the client. These cards should be interpreted in terms of current influences that are shaping the clients general thoughts. The second pack gives us information about the clients family and home life, or lack of one. This describes affects on those around the client, and how they interact with them. The third hand pertains to the clients present desires and aspirations; this tells us what their immediate goals are. The fourth hand, dealt immediately above the client card foretells the clients hopes and expectations. This tells us what they wish for and what they believe will happen. The fifth hand, just to the right of center, represents the unexpected in the clients reading. This can be people, events, money, or troubles. The one certainty is that this deck describes things not looked for by the client. The sixth hand foretells the clients immediate future. This deck will foretell events which will happen in a matter of days; certainly within the next month or so. The seventh and last deck foretells the clients more distant future. This triple will reveal something which will occur within the next year or so. It frequently predicts some resolution of the unexpected factors foretold in deck five.

Cartomancy enables us to take a common playing card deck and perform fortune telling for our friends and ourselves. It is simple to learn, and can be done almost anywhere with excellent results.

Scratch Start Tig Welder – How to Tig Weld With an Old School Stick Machine

A “scratch start” tig welder is the simplest kind of tig welder there is. An air cooled tig torch, argon cylinder, and a regulator/flowmeter is all you need to turn any DC stick welding machine into a crude tig welder.

Scratch Start tig units, also called “dry rigs” are used all the time by pipefitters and boilermakers because of their low cost and portability. Many high quality welds are made every year on pipes that go into things like Nuclear plants and Battle Ships using old school scratch start tig welders.

What are the drawbacks?

  • no amperage control
  • tungsten must come in contact with weld in order to start the arc
  • no ability to taper off amperage and shield hot weld metal when a bead is terminated

What about the pluses?

  • very portable – you are limited only by the feet of welding lead and argon hose you have as to how far away from the machine you can work.
  • very simple – not much can malfunction
  • very inexpensive – you can score an air cooled tig torch and flowmeter off E-bay for about 100 bones

What about for Shop welding?

For shop welding, you are definitely going to want a foot pedal amperage control.

In a job shop environment, the variety of different metal types, and varying thicknesses make a foot pedal amperage control an absolute must.

Here is the good news:

Tig Inverter machines are available that come complete with foot pedal amperage control, tig torch, flowmeter, ground clamp, and even a stick electrode holder for roughly 650 bones.

That’s the best way to break into tig welding in my opinion.

How to Determine Foundation Problems in Your Home

Determining if you have a foundation problem with your home or other building is determined mostly by using your eyes and just good common sense. If you are starting to see cracks in interior drywall, windows that won’t close or open, doors that suddenly seem out of kilter or other abnormal things around the home your foundation may be the culprit.

If you do a little investigative looking, finding problems can be quite easy if they are actually present. Finding a sticky window or door does not mean your foundation is bad. It may be nothing more than humidity, loose hinges or a window that needs a spring adjustment. If you find all of sudden there are a great many items with a problem then it is time to look around. Drywall cracking is a pretty good sign that the building is settling and there should be a reason why. If it is a brand new building you may expect to see a few very minor settlement cracks. Slight cracks over doorways or window corners may be caused by wood shrinkage as well. Anything beyond these minor defects should cause some added concern.

Starting on the buildings exterior, slowly walk the perimeter and take a real good look at the exposed portion of the foundation walls. If you see cracks in the wall, inward or outward bowing, sunken soils against the wall, cracks in the brick face or bowed siding for example, these are all causes for concern. Make a note of the locations and proceed to the inside of the basement.

Go to the locations you noted outside and see what is happening on the inside. Inwardly bowed walls means there is ground or water pressure being exerted against the wall on the outside. A severely bowed wall can collapse causing severe structural failure. Small very thin cracks may be nothing more than normal concrete shrinkage as the concrete dried. Using a pencil, draw a line horizontally across the crack and large enough to see easily later on. Keep checking the crack from time to time to see if the pencil mark as moved and the two sides of crack line no longer match up. If the lines are now separated vertically, it indicates that the foundation is moving. If you see a larger crack, bigger than an eighth of an inch wide, this may mean severe movement has occurred. A structural engineer or architect should be called to inspect and advise if a repair is necessary.

Bowing of any wall is a problem. The wall may have been insufficient in design to carry the loads placed on it or it at least indicates outside forces are being placed against the wall above the design limits. Poor back filling procedures, large rocks or stumps being placed in the back fill against the wall are all reasons for wall bowing. An eighth inch out of plumb is more than likely the workmanship but is acceptable. I have seen walls two inches out of plumb in eight feet. That is bad news. In most cases the outside would need to be excavated to determine the problem and the wall be replaced. Another often overlooked cause of wall bowing is excess water pressure against the wall. Ground springs, improper grading, missing gutters and downspouts can all add huge amounts of water against a foundation wall. Again use your eyes. Footing drains which should carry away that water can become clogged with silt, be crushed during back filling work or have the open air end of the drain pipe plugged with dirt or grass. Look for the footing drain pipe outlet and make sure it is clear of all debris.

Loose basement lolly columns, gaps between the buildings sill plate and the top of the foundation wall or other things that may seem odd probably are. Talk to an pro to make sure your building is safe and sound.

A Review of the Porch Potty – Indoor Grass for Dogs

This review is about the larger sized (2′ x 4′ grass area), Standard Porch Potty, purchased for my father’s dog. They sell another model called the Porch Potty Premium, which is the same thing, only with pop-up sprinklers. I use a watering can, and it works just as well.

It shipped with both the drain hose and catch basin, as well as with a little fire hydrant and an instruction booklet. I also opted for the Training Sod at 40% off with the idea that it would make training a dog who was used to going potty outdoors a little easier.

The shipment arrived in two boxes, one very large box with the plastic base, synthetic grass, drainage hose, catch basin and instruction booklet. The second box, which was pretty heavy, contained the real sod. The base is in one piece, so there is no assembly required. Set-up was as simple and quick as it takes to unpack the box, put the catch basin under the hole in the center of the base and roll out the sod – just a few minutes.

Unfortunately, the sod arrived in poor condition. It was green around the edges, but beyond that it was brown and limp. I tried watering it and waiting a few days for it to spring back, but it was pretty much dead. I contacted Porch Potty’s Customer Care about the problem and they quickly responded, sending out a new piece of sod.

The problem with the sod lies in the shipping, as it takes about 5 days to get to South Florida. It had shipped on a Monday and did not make it here until late Friday, so it sat in a UPS Hub until Monday. I am sorry to say that the second shipment’s days were exactly the same, so we received another piece of wilted, basically dead sod. I inquired about a faster shipping method than Standard Ground service, but was told that it would cost approximately $80, which is out of the question for a piece of grass.

Since I was training an older dog who was used to going potty outside, I tried to work with the sod since it smelled like the outdoors. The dog (a Scottie mix about 25 lbs) jumped right up on it, sniffed around and lied down like it was a new bed! I worked with her for about two weeks, even using the leash like we were going for a real walk, but nothing would get her to do her business on the new potty. I tried using a toilet training attractant so that she might get the idea that it was okay to go pee there, but that also failed with this dog. I tried both the half dead sod and the synthetic grass, but neither worked.

So, in order to determine if it was the product, or the dog, I decided to bring the Porch Potty over to my patio to use on my Pug. She has been trained to go on newspaper inside when the weather is bad, as well as going outside. Before throwing away the sod, I decided to give it one more try. After taking my dog to the porch, it took less than 5 minutes for her to go pee on the Porch Potty. She took to it instantly!

The next test was to see if she would go on the synthetic grass – since getting grass in good condition seems to be out of the question. She did not hesitate to go on the synthetic grass either!

To sum up the good and bad sides to this product, in my opinion:

The good –

The size is bigger than any other I could find (small dogs like room too).

The drainage system is nice – even the catch basin is large and sturdy.

The synthetic turf was nice and soft, with pre-punched drainage holes.

It is very easy to clean.

The bad –

The base is a bit flimsy towards the middle, so I do not see it working well for a 120 pound dog (as they claim). The 25 lb dog I tried it on got a little spooked when walking over the middle, however my 15 lb dog was just fine.

The real training sod is on the expensive side, and may not arrive in the best condition depending on where you live in the U.S.

The price seems a little high for what you get. It would have been very upsetting to spend that kind of money and not have it work out. I am just glad I purchased it for one dog, knowing mine would probably take to it if it didn’t work out.

The fire hydrant seemed small and a bit silly. Since this was not tested on a male dog, I am not sure how it would work out.

Sewer Smells and Pinky Rings in Your Bathroom

The smell of sewer gas inside your home is a serious problem; one that needs to be taken care of promptly. Many of these problems require the services of a professional plumber, but there are a few things most people can handle themselves; check out these easy solutions before calling the plumber.

The water you see in toilet bowls and other traps is actually a seal for the plumbing system. It prevents sewer odors from entering your house. The water level in the bowl and most traps is automatically maintained, but if something interferes with the refill, sewer gases can escape. There are seals in the traps under sinks, tubs and every appliance connected to the DWV (drain/waste/vent) system in your home, plus basement floor drains.

Bathroom smells can be a difficult to track down but not impossible. Assuming the plumbing system was initially installed to code and has been working properly before you first detected the smells, there are several ways that sewer gas can escape from the plumbing system. Start with the easy solutions first. It’s surprising how some supposedly difficult problems have relatively easy remedies.

If you notice the smell of sewer gas when you lean over the sink to brush your teeth with the water running, or when you flush the toilet, it can appear the smell is coming from the water. But that’s not usually the case. It’s more likely the smell is coming from inside the concealed parts of the fixtures.

A common source of smells is from the organisms that normally reside in the sewer. These organisms can get to the house side of the traps and actually generate sewer gas inside the fixtures.  They will take up residence inside the rim of a toilet bowl (as well as the sink and tub traps and overflows) and whenever the toilet is flushed or water run in the sink, the fresh water rushing around the toilet rim will stir up the sewer gas and push it out into the bowl. The problem can occur anytime of the years, but most often occurs during hot and humid weather.

The SOLUTION is to carefully remove the toilet tank lid and set it aside on a towel or soft surface. Insert a funnel into the top of the overflow pipe in the toilet tank. Then pour several cups of household bleach into the funnel. This will disinfect the rim of the bowl. Just pouring bleach directly into the bowl will not do the job; it must be poured into the overflow.

You’ll also want to pour bleach into the drains and overflows in the sink and tub. I use a turkey baster to inject bleach into the overflow holes in the sinks. Remove the plate on the front wall a tub and pour bleach into the overflow.

If you’re plagued with a pink/brown/black ring of mold at the water line in the toilet bowl, the above bleach treatment will remedy this. A ring of mold can also show up in a pet’s water bowl that’s kept in a bathroom. The bowl also needs to be disinfected with bleach.

Here’s a few more possibilities of how the trap seals are broken.

Toilets are fascinating to pets. Your pet may be drinking from the bowl or just entertaining themselves; the solution is to keep the bathroom door closed. In addition to possibly being the cause of sewer smells, a pet can really run up a water bill if it learns how to flush a toilet. With nothing else to entertain themselves they can do this.

If a toilet is seldom used such as in a guest room, basement or a vacant house, the water can also evaporate from the traps.   In this case, the solution is to periodically flush a toilet that is not regularly used. Also run a few quarts of water into the sink and tub drains.

An internal crack in the toilet bowl will allow water to slowly leak into the drain, the water level will gradually drop after the toilet is flushed and allow sewer gas to enter the bathroom. Snaking out a toilet bowl too aggressively can be the cause of such a crack. If this is the problem, you need a new toilet.

A problem with the plumbing vent such as a partial blockage or the vent is installed incorrectly can siphon water out of the trap allowing the sewer gas to escape. Leaves, and all sorts of other debris can clog plumbing vent pipes.

Clearing the main vent in a plumbing system usually requires going up on the roof and running a large snake down through the vent. This is work best left to an experienced professional plumber. Do not be tempted to run a garden hose into the vent; water will be sent through every drain outlet in the house. A friend learned this lesson the messy way.

A rocking toilet can cause a wax ring to fail to seal properly and leak smells; the toilet needs to be reset and shimmed to prevent rocking.
