Must Have Materials for the ESL Classroom

ESL tools.

Teacher collects and decorates with these materials but the children should make most of them in class. They take possession of the room in this way, something like territorial marking for animals.

1. Small rooms are better than big. There should be 10 children or fewer and they need to be at the same learning level, so pretest them orally.

2. ESL teaching is not lecturing, so I prefer one large central table with the teacher sitting at the front near the white or blackboard. This is the correct distance for conversation or dialogue.

3. Noise control. Language classes need noise control. If the walls are too thin you are going to be very frustrated as a teacher. If the chairs make a lot of noise scraping on the floor, get some masking tape etc. to tape the bottom of the legs and ask the children to help you make the room a bit more quiet. Those cylindrical metal pencil cases are teacher torture devices. They fall over, roll and crash on the floor again and again. Maybe I will ban them!

4. Make sure children's book bags are stored under or beside the desk and not in the walk way.

5 .. Find and hang the largest calendar you can and a world map in English.

6. Post the days of the week and animal charts on the wall.

7. Post the months of the year, preferred in a big wheel showing the seasons too. Post years too.

8. Post numbers and ordinal numbers: 1st first, 2nd second … Use both styles.

9. Post colors and the words: Make sure you include light and dark, silver, gold, bronze, beige, violet, and red-wine color. Post the heavenly bodies and sky features on the ceiling: star, moon, sun, cloud, rain, lightening, wind etc.

10. Have a clock on the wall. You can not pace your lesson if you do not know the time. Wrapping up the lesson is especially important. The children need it too.

11. Food treats are best at the end of class when they can wash their hand near the end. We often do a noisy action game at the end of the class. The children blow off steam, get excited and leave. Do not get them too worked up at the start of a class as they will be difficult to settle down. I begin a 50 min. class with quiet activities, usually book work and then move on to new activities after 15-20 min. the normal attention span.

12. Post the big Small Words chart (found in the ESL resources of eslteachersboard.com).

13. You need tissue in the classroom and a waste bin, a CD player and music for the kids as they arrive. I keep a plastic or wooden bowl of extra pencils, erasers crayons and small pencil sharpener in the middle of the table. Children can borrow these for the period of the class. I restock it with things that kids lose. I do not allow a wall mounted pencil sharpener as it is disruptive and noisy.

14. I also have small gifts, or prizes I bring to class. Good behaviors and work are rewarded. The children are motivated by this. I generally do not use sweets. They get too many elsewhere. The strangest things are interesting to children: I collect the small bottles of shampoo and tooth paste from hotel rooms. Foreign coins are prized, recycled toys, etc. etc. I sometimes reward with prepared food on a plate, like cucumber slices sprinkled with lemonade powder. This is a great summer treat and not expensive. Insist on good eating manners and have the kids clean the plate and wash hands.

15. Occasionally I bring in a pet or a bug that we can hold and talk about in a glass tank. This is a great time to break down cultural prejudice about some animals, eg. girls must scream if a bug touches them. The animal can be a great way to teach basic anatomy by making a sketch in their notebooks and labeling parts. For some children it is their only contact with nature. Sad but true.

16. As children advance I like to make big posters for the wall showing how essential verbs change, eg verb To be. I am, you are, he / she / it is, we / they are. Children glance up and use these posters to help with their written textbooks. We also have a poster of contracts, a poster of plurals, articles, prepositions, use of a and an (aeiou) etc.

17. My favorite books are the Let's Go series 1 to 6 but they are pricing themselves out of the market. Kids should each have the workbook but can share the reader book with the colored pages. I generally insist that kids store these books in the class locker with me. That way they can not forget or lose them. Generally I mark the books in the class as soon as kids finish a page. They want and need instant feedback, plus praise, and have to correct their mistakes right away. Needless to say, they must use pencils not pens.

There are several good Phonics Books but some are overly artistic and confuse the children. I like books that have many A words and pictures, B words and pictures, Ch words and pictures, etc. I like 'Up and Away with Phonics' produced by Oxford. Nice and simple.

Baby Bottle Warmers – Why You Need Them and What Are the Advantages

Baby Bottle Warmers – why do you need them?

Mom’s need to be careful when heating pumped breastmilk or formula. If you heat breastmilk in the microwave it can change the milk’s composition which cause the milk to lost certain anti-infective properties and nutrients even when microwaved for a short amount of time. This is why they are very effective and why most newborn’s parents are buying them. Breastmilk is generally very sensitive to warm temperatures and can very eaily lose it’s vitamin C content. Heating breastmilk on the stove is also ineffective because it causes a central spike in temperature which cause the breaskmilk to break apart. Just like microwaved breastmilk, it causes a loss of minerals, immunological properties, vitamins and micro-nutrients very quickly. So what can you do? You can obviously put the pumped breastmilk in a sterilized bottle and run it under hot water for ten minutes – but who wants to do this when a newborn is screaming because he or she is starving? The same thing goes with formula. For years doctors have been saying that microwaving formula causes horrible heat distribution which can burn babies’ mouth’s and bellies. Although most people shake bottles to avoid this – it always does not work because heat tends to re-conglomerate immediately. Warming the water is a much safer method.

How do you use baby bottle warmers?

Most can easily heat pumped breastmilk and formula in about one to three minutes. They are very convenient because if the baby’s room is upstairs you can keep the warmer up there also. By the time you change your newborn’s diaper the baby bottle warmer could have easily warmed up 3 or 4 ounce of milk. They are very easy-to-use, quick and reliable. You would never need to worry that your new babysitter will over cook a bottle in the microwave. I bought one of the Philips Avent iQ baby Bottle Warmers and it works like a charm. You just add water into the container and select setting. You put the bottle in and close the lid and leave it. The baby bottle warmer heats the milk by very quickly evaporate the water and heats the breastmilk without any hotspots and without breaking down the milk’s composition. Now that my baby is up to about 4 ounces, I can warm a bottle up in about 3.5 minute to heat the milk to a perfect temperature.

Who would have known that heating breastmilk or formula would be such a science!! On top of the great advantages noted above, I find that my baby simply prefers warm milk so it is perfect for me. It is very convenient, it does not take up a lot of room and I can easily put it in any cupboard when I am done with it. It is very compact and you can take it into any room! A little hint for most of the bottle warmer out there – if you can use distilled water then do it. Otherwise if you use tap water, your baby bottle warmers will have some mineral build up.

So are baby bottle warmers a necessity?

I think so. I think that if parents are going to bottle feed their baby pumped breastmilk once in a while or formula, if is an absolute necessity. Not only does it have many advantages but they are very simple to use. You add water and stick the bottle in. When it’s done warming the baby bottle warmer lights up and that’s that. Shake the bottle and feed the baby. The baby bottle warmers on the market today are able to hold both big thicker newborn bottles, short, tall or skinny bottles. They work great at night and you can do the whole process with one hand.

Which ones would I recommend?

Definitely the Philips Avent. It’s been fantastic for my husband and I. The First Years Night & Day Bottle Warmer System is a good one because it is also a bottle cooler. If I were to do it again I would probably buy the Gerber Bottle Warmer or the Munchkin Deluxe Bottle And Food Warmer With Pacifier Cleaning Basket. The Gerber Electric Bottle Warmer has great reviews and is fantastic to travel with. The Philips Avent Express Baby Food and Bottle Warmer is also a great baby bottle warmer.

Remember using a microwave for pumped breast milk and formula is never recommended for heating your baby bottle. Not only is it difficult to judge how long you should heat the bottle for, it breaks up it causes a loss of minerals, immunological properties, vitamins and micro-nutrients very quickly. Hot spot are a danger to sensitive babies. You can run bottles under hot water but why wait ten minute and keep checking. This is the greatest gift we got for our newborn. These are revolutionary products that will warm frozen breast milk very safely, quickly and without destroying the important vitamin and nutrients that babies need. The advanced thermostatic controls on them and the thermal fuse allows you to warm bottles, disposable bags with frozen pumped breastmilk without boiling or over-heating. Another hint – get one with a timer!!

Creating a Home Library

Home libraries are important resources for both you and your children. The reference material can provide quick and easy look-up for questions that come up at the dinner table. Handy references also help during homework periods both because your children learn how to use the material and discover the answers they need for their homework project.

Many people think having a computer with Internet access is the only thing needed to support home resource needs, but actually there are reasons why other resource material can provide an enhanced understanding of the subject matter of interest.

One reason why physical reference material is helpful is that it works regardless the electrical power is on or off and can be used even if your computer has crashed yet again. Another reason available available books and other resource materials can be useful is the physical representation. For example, a planet gives a much better representation of the earth and the location of the continents and oceans than a flat screen. And finally, no matter how good search engines are, sometimes you just do not know the right words to use in the question to get good results. In those cases, it can be easier to locate the information you are looking for by thumbing through a book.

Create a home library which provides an excellent resource for you and your family by including the following items.

A world view. Provide several resources which help one visualize the world. Include a globe, large world map, and an atlas. The globe allows one to see the relationship of one country to another and gives a more accurate picture of the shape of the world in which we live. A world map will have more detail than a globe is able to provide. The atlas will have the most detail and may include information on countries like their population size and make-up and exports. Also a good atlas will include information about topography, vegetation coverage, ocean floors and major currents.

Words, words, and more words. An unabridged dictionary is a critical resource. Aside from looking up the definitions of new words, dictionaries often include special sections with labeled pictures of topics like anatomy, atmospheric and soil layers, boats and ships, insects, mammals, state flowers, solar system, birds, fish, and plants. Large dictionaries also typically include alphabetically numbered persons with short biographical summaries, geographical lists with areas and population figures, lists of fictional names from stories, mythology, and legends, foreign phrases, scriptural names, abbreviations, practical mathematics, tables of weights and measures , special signs and symbols, lists of predominant members of government; the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States and much more. If you knew only what was in the dictionary, you would be quite a knowledgeable person!

In addition to a dictionary, other references for writing that are very handy include a thesaurus and a style manual.

How do I fix that? Having a home repair guide or a guide to doing anything can help you deal with the inevitable need to repair, maintain, or other fix fix problems. There are a number of books like this. Look through several and choose the one with instructions you understand.

Subject matter expert. Include books which provide information on your favorite areas of interest. We have over 300 books on gardening in our home library because we enjoy gardening. We use many of these books often as we look up new plant possibilities, identify a pest, research the growth habits of a tree, and so on. Whatever your interests are, you will want to have ready references.

Sit down by the fire with a good book. Include classic stories or favorite books which you will read over and over in your home library. Reading books for enjoyment is the most successful way of maintaining and improving reading skills.

Book Buyer. Have authors and illustrators autograph their books whenever possible. Many bookstores hold book signing events and schools sometimes sponsor author visits which include a book signing. You may wish to maintain a separate collection of signed books as these books can appreciate in value. Your book buying appetite may be larger than your budget. In addition to buying at full price from bookstores and other venders, consider the following optional ways of procuring your tomes. Buy at library sales, second-hand bookstores, and yard sales. Purchase discounted books at book stores and from internet venders. Some recycling collection centers include book trading stations. Trade books with friends and family.

Library Maintenance. Keep only those books which you find yourself turning to again and again. Culling your books every year or so will maintain the freshness of your library and ensure the library fits within the space you have allotted. Dust your books and shelves weekly. Store books flat on the shelf or completely upright. Storing at angles degrades the book's spine. Vacuum the room thoroughly at least once a week. The glue in book bindings is food for certain types of insects. Vacuuming the carpet and curtains will control these pests.

Books can relax you, invigorate your mind, transport you, and inform you. Creating a home library for you and your family provides a resource which you can use to bring greater understanding and enjoyment of the world around you.

Understanding Speakers and Speaker Guidelines

When most people shop for home audio speakers they often find a lot of information, but don’t know what much of it means. The purpose of this article is to provide a basic understanding of some of the key elements in speakers and to offer some guidelines for the average audio consumer.

Most home audio speakers bought today are 2-way speakers. This means the speaker has a woofer for low or bass sounds and a tweeter for high sounds. There are also 3-way speakers which add a mid-range and these can sound clearer, all things being equal. For most people, however, a good 2-way speaker is fine.

Home audio speakers typically come in either rectangular or round designs. Round ceiling speakers are ideal for background music and rectangular wall speakers are ideal for surround sound systems. With this said, in-wall speakers are often just not practical to install in a given room due to room lay-out and furniture. There are certain designs of round speakers which can help offset the inherent benefits of rectangular speakers for surround sound.

One of the problems with round ceiling speakers is that they basically send the sound straight down beneath them instead of out into the room or area most desired. However, some speakers offer angled woofers so that you can install them in the corners, for example, and still have the sound directed outward into the room.

Typical sizes for speakers are 5.5, 6.5 and 8 inch. The 8 inch will generally have stronger bass with the larger woofer. 8 inch speakers are recommended for surround sound systems and 6.5 inch for background music. I would not recommend 5.25 inch speakers except for very small rooms.

A dual voice coil home audio speaker helps handle small rooms where there isn’t really enough room to place two speakers. The dual voice coil speaker provides for both channels from the amplifier and these can be quite handy in bathrooms, for example.

Power ratings of speakers always get a lot of attention, but often too much attention because power is but one factor among several others. The fact is most people will rarely if ever use the full power of most speakers today because they would soon become deaf if they listened to music at peak power. Power is rated two ways; RMS and Peak. RMS essentially means the volume level the speaker can handle all day long without distorting. Peak is the top power level the speaker can handle before blowing. For most people in most homes, 40-50 watts RMS is plenty. Some speakers only specify their Peak power rating and as a rule-of-thumb, divide the Peak rating by 2 to estimate the RMS rating.

The sensitivity rating should be 89db or more is the usual recommendation. This specification has to do with how clear the speaker sounds, and below 89db the sound clarity may be poor.

Range, or frequency response, represents the low and high end range of the speaker. Here the low end range is the more important of the two, and typically, 45-50Hz is the low end of what most of us can hear. On the high end, most speakers today exceed what we can hear and usually they are 20KHz or more, which is well above what we can hear.

A speaker has to divide the signal coming into it between the tweeter and the woofer. The crossover is in effect a filter that performs this function, but whenever sound is divided there will be some signal loss. A crossover of 12db is the most common today, and again, is fine for most people. Most speakers use passive crossovers, but some high-end speakers use active crossovers which are more sophisticated and allow for adjustments. Few homeowners need speakers with active crossovers or want to make these kinds of adjustments.

The materials that woofers are made of are often cited in speaker specifications. Polypropylene is the most common material used and is okay, but bass sounds will not be as full as with other materials. Kevlar, fiberglass or aluminum woofers will cost more but do offer stronger bass end sounds. For true audiophiles with lots of money there are other highly specialized materials available, but again, just not needed for average listeners.

You will also find that some speakers today feature bridge mount tweeters and this can be a plus. Bridge mount tweeters do not penetrate the woofer cone and will not, therefore, interfere with the woofer low-end sound. This is not to say that there aren’t good speakers who do not bridge mount their tweeters because there are such speakers where very few people could tell the difference. However, the difference is there and if you want a superior speaker then a bridge mount tweeter is one consideration.

The range of speaker prices today is quite remarkable. The truth is you can buy a decent pair of ceiling speakers for as little as $40 and you can buy a great pair for $200. Some people want the best and you can find those for as much as $1,500 a pair. As always, to some degree, you get what you pay for. However, it is also the case that the vast majority of us would have trouble telling the difference in sound from a good quality $100 speaker from a better quality $200 speaker.

The True Purpose of Self Development Or Arete

Personal Development dates back to the Greek philosopher Aristotle. In those days, Personal Development was a quest to reach "aête" which means, Personal Excellence.

Arête, or personal excellence, was thought in order to attain Eudaimonia, commonly translated as "happiness." Times have changed but the common desire to attain happiness has not. And what was true in Aristotle's day is still true today. The surest way of attaining happiness is through Personal Development.

Definition of the term Personal Development.

Personal Development means exactly what the words implies, developing our personal resources to its full potential. Seems easy enough to understand yet, it is probably one of the least understood term.

For most people, Personal Development means learning new tricks of gimmicks to get what we want. That's not Personal Development. At best, it's an insincere form of behavior and in its worst case scenario it's just plain deceit.

The objective of Personal Development is arete or personal excellence which can be found in the character of the individual and not simply in a form of wonderful behavior that the individual can adopt.

In other words, Personal Development is a quest to develop and optimize one's original resources to make the individual more effective, better equipped to face life's challenges and better apt to reach the objectives necessary to attain the state of self-fulfillment, self-satisfaction and happiness.

True Personal Development increases a person's worth. It belongs in the realm of personal character and not simply in the person's behavior.

Personal Development aims to build in and build up Aristotle's basic virtues such as: courage, temperance, generosity, friendship and magnanimity.

Now I know that this is not exactly what people seek when they are involved in Personal Development. Mostly they seek quick fixes and slick approaches to acquiring money and material success. No wonder that after years of practicing so called Personal Development principles no last changes have been observed.

Does that means that the teachings of Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar et al are not worthy? Of course not. However we are all guilty of hearing what we want to hear.

Jim Rohn says something to the effect that, if you want to succeed, work harder on yourself than you do on your job and you'll succeed. He said, work harder on yourself … he did not say learn some slick tricks. He did not say learn this formula and apply it. He said, "Work on yourself." To work on yourself means improve who you are as an individual. Improve your character. Be a better person. Develop the basic virtues of courage, temperance, generosity, friendship and magnanimity among others.

How can a value be developed? The best way to do that is by raising it in the hierarchy of personal values. We tend to protect more what we value most since losing it would cause considering pain. So, by raising that value in our esteem it will increase in importance in our eyes and will be better protected and practiced.

It can also be done by emulating someone that we admire and who demonstrates that virtuously prominently. Emulation is a power tool that can be used with great effectiveness. Whether we know it or not, we are highly influenced by those that we respect. That characteristic can be used consciously or unconsciously and naturally, it's a lot more effective when we use it delicately.

Personal Development also means self-transformation. Learning something but not changing who we are is useless. Knowledge is only effective when it is used. Years ago I would go to motivational seminars. We would get all hyped up and get back home ready to turn the world upside down. Sadly, the feeling would only last a few weeks at most.

Positive permanent changes do not come easy. Our brain is quite resistant to changes. It is said that the brain is like a muscle and that analogy is especially true as far as personal transformation is concerned. It is not easy to sculpt and transform a muscle. It takes work and dedication. The same applies to acquiring new and more empowering habits and behavior.

Alexis Carrel author of Man the Unknown said something to the effect that, the transformation of man is not an easy task for he is at the same time the block of granite and the artisan who must, through powerful blow of the hammer, sculpt and fashion the masterpiece that he wants to become.

Unique Family Photo Canvas Ideas

It's easy to create a unique work of art with a photo canvas. It's a way to create something that will last for decades and all you need is your imagination – and some digital photos, of course. There's no need to paint, draw or sculpt, but you can still create memories from your photos. If you have thousands of photos on your hard drive or in your memory card, then it's time to do something exciting with them. Instead of simply emailing a few to our friends and forgetting about the rest, we can use our digital photos to create unique photo gifts.

As the name suggests, a photo canvas is a canvas with your digital photo on it. It's like the canvases that hang in the National Gallery. It is woven and stretched like those canvases; the only difference is that it has your digital photo printed on it. When it comes to creating a photo canvas, size does not matter. They can be as small as a paperback or as large as a computer screen, or even larger.

Simple Or Complex Photo Canvas Ideas

Many people go for a simple photo canvas. That's a canvas with a single photo printed on it. This is a great personalized gifts for commemorating a loved one, or highlighting a picture of the youngest member of your family. However, you can do even more than that. If you're a whiz with photo editing software, you can customize your photo before you send it to be printed. Do not like the background? Change it for something more tasteful. Get rid of red eye and use an air brush effect so that the photo looks its best.

Some photo editing programs have lots of artistic effects, so that you can make your digital photo look like a mosaic, a painting or another style of art. You can use photo editing to combine several photos too, though there is another way. Why not upload a batch of photos and get a photo canvas with dozens of photos. A photo collage is a much better than sticking them to a noticoard with push pins. Creating this kind of effect is a great way to commemorate a special occasion where you take lots of photos, such as a wedding, anniversary party, graduation or special birthday.

You do not need to limit yourself to a single photo canvas. You could also do a whole series around a theme and link them together. It will provide a real talking point. If you live in a scenic location, why not take several pictures from slightly different viewpoints and then hang five, six or a dozen photo canvases together. It's a spectacular way to use this form of art.

Do not forget to choose your photos carefully, especially if you are using a single photo. Make sure that it really is something that you will be happy to hang on your walls. Once the decision is made, you can relax, secure in the knowledge that you have something totally unique. And there's more. A photo canvas also makes a great gift for a loved one. After all, you've got to use those digital photos somehow.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Non-Surgical Face Lifts

Non-surgical face lifts are one of the latest cosmetic trends tempting consumers to go under the needle for a more youthful look. The best thing about the procedure is the obvious – there is no surgery involved and no possibility of knife scarring or other surgical complications. This also means you can get back to your daily activities sooner, as there is minimal downtime involved.

Needless to say, the price of non surgical procedures is a lot more attractive than the cost of an operation. The results are not always as dramatic as surgical options, but most people see this as a plus – you can still alter the areas you do not like, while still looking like your original self.

What can be achieved with non-surgical facial shaping?

Injections, or more appropriately, dermal fillers, can achieve a lot more than one might think. There are a range of corrections that just a few injections can fix. These areas / treatments can include:

  • Nose – Dermal fillers can disguise bumps on the nose and also fill wrinkles.
  • Eyebrows – An injection can be used to create an eyebrow lift and shape the eyebrows in general.
  • Tear Troughs – Dermal fillers can be used to fill and tighten skin in the eye hollow region.
  • Cheeks – Dermal fillers are able to correct and fill sunken cheeks. These are referred to as cheek implants.
  • Jaw – Many people opt to correct jaw squareness, which can be achieved through injections.
  • Chin – Injections can help to shape, fill and define the chin. This procedure is commonly referred to as cheek implants.
  • Jowls – Dermal fillers can correct a drooping mouth.

Non-surgical face lifts vs. surgical face lifts When weighing up the pros and cons of non-surgical and surgical face lifts, there really is no competition. Non-surgical options present the following benefits:

  • No risk of surgical complications and scarring.
  • Treatment is available at a much lower cost.
  • Results correct the problem and you'll still look like yourself afterwards.
  • There is hardly any downtime in comparison to surgical treatment.

You'll always be taking a risk with surgery, even in the hands of a qualified surgeon. It requires weeks of recovery and can sometimes produce dramatic results that leave you looking unlike your former self. Surgery is useful if you're looking for a dramatic change and it will also produce permanent results that you will not need to maintain. However, these procedures are usually very expensive and it's definitely worth trying a non-surgical option before committing.

Top Ramen Noodles and Rice

My kids were visiting my sister one summer and with dinner my sister served something my kids had never seen before. She made ramen noodles and rice mixed together.

We have always eaten ramen noodles. We buy almost every flavor they make. We make them plain. We have cut up both chicken and beef and added the meats to the noodles. My sister though added rice to the noodles. My kids loved it.

The sauce pack that comes with ramen noodles is very high in sodium. If you add flavored rice to the noodles, you do not need to use the sauce pack. If you add white rice to the noodle packet you'll use the sauce pack but each serving has a lower amount of sodium since you've now added another item to the mixture.

My sister actually cuts up the noodles after boiling so that they are short like the rice kernels. Then she mixes the two together.

One other option is to make your own chicken broth or beef broth and then add both the package of ramen noodles and also the white rice. You will not be using the sauce pack and you can also add cut up vegetables and pieces of chicken or beef to the mixture.

I actually found a blog that is all about ramen noodles http://mattfischer.com/ramen/ . This blog features recipes, commentary, and tons of information about ramen noodles.

Bon Appetite!

Plastic Surgery: Going Under the Knife

Plastic surgery is fast becoming acceptable to the society, even by those with conservative standards. While it has long been used for medical purposes only, nowadays, people have turned to the surgical knife to improve their appearance.

Although this medical practice has been around for a while, not many people know that plastic surgery dates back to two millennia ago, in India. It has just caught fire in the 19th and 20th century because surgeries before were definitely not a safe procedure. Perhaps, St. Ignatius of Loyola is one of the first few people who had plastic surgery done purely for aesthetic reasons — his leg was hurt in the war and he did not like his limp, it did not do well with the ladies.

There are two main kinds of plastic surgery: reconstructive surgery, and cosmetic surgery. There is no definite black and white when separating the two types as they generally include techniques from both fields. Reconstructive surgery is usually employed for medical purposes, and some common examples include:

* cleft lip surgery

* breast reconstruction surgery for those who have had mastectomy

* contracture surgery for burn survivors

* sex reassignment surgery

Cosmetic surgery on the other had, is done mostly for aesthetic enhancement.

When one is considering cosmetic surgery, it is best to be extremely careful in choosing a doctor as less than skillful hands can mar the body and self-esteem for life. All types of surgery always include a considerable amount of risk. Remember, cheaper is not necessarily more value, and second, even third opinions are helpful. Listen to receommendations of friends and select from the members of a certified and accredited medical organization such as the American Society of Plastic Surgery, which must be recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. There are actually other laypersons who have created their own credible-sounding organization to lure in unsuspecting patients. Make sure you pick on a plastic surgeon with appropriate credentials. Take a look at their portfolio of patients, their before and after pictures to get a grasp of what you’re getting into. Don’t be afraid to communicate with the surgeon in order to avoid any miscommunication or mistakes.

Different types of cosmetic surgery include:

* Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

* Liposuction

* Collagen, fat, and other tissue filler injections

* Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

* Mastoplexy (breast lift)

* Nose job (rhinoplasty)

* Cheek augmentation

* Chin augmentation

* Breast reduction/enlargement (augmentation mammaplasty)

* Buttock augmentation

There are some people who actually become addicted to cosmetic surgery. These people are diagnosed with a body dysmorphic disorder, which involves having a disturbed body image. People who have these are extremely critical of their appearance, causing them to have repeated cosmetic surgeries, which in turn can cause irreparable damage to their human body structure. This disease can affect one in 50 people.

Cosmetic surgery can cause people to have a “rejuvenated” self-image although it is necessary to take caution and not go overboard with too many procedures. It can turn into an ugly, costly, and irreversible addiction.

If one is interested in having their physical appearance augmented, one must consider the following seriously:

* The surgeon. Choose one with the necessary qualifications and ask around if necessary. Rely on your gut feeling. You shouldn’t have to feel suspicious about anything.

* The procedure. Do your research so you know what you’re getting into.

Remember, it’s never too late to back out of what you don’t feel comfortable doing, lest you’re surgically inducing your way to a permanent mistake.

Bamboo Flooring for the 21st Century

Bamboo flooring has emerged as a new material for the commercial design market. Its unique look and earth friendly properties have made it popular for flooring and panels. Although bamboo has been used as a construction material for centuries, it has only recently emerged as an engineered flooring product.

Here are some important facts you should know before selecting your bamboo flooring:

Bamboo is a grass not a wood. As a grass bamboo regenerates faster than wood. In fact, bamboo is typically harvested within five years of sprouting, making it a truly renewable resource. Its use can provide a positive impact on the environment. Harvesting bamboo serves to stimulate the growth of very extensive underground root systems, which develops fast growing sprouts the following spring. Sprouts breaking through the soil can grow as much as 2 feet the first day.

Bamboo flooring's hardness varies. While northern red oak's characteristics are the same regardless of where it is grown, the same can not be said for bamboo flooring grown in the different Provinces in China. Although bamboo used for flooring is always the same species, there are significant differences caused by environmental conditions. Where it grows, what time of year it is harvested, the age of the bamboo, the soil chemistry and the amount of rain are all variables that will affect the hardness and stability of bamboo flooring.

During the carbonization process, bamboo flooring loses about 20% of its hardness. The fibers are weakened by the presence of high pressure steam, which is used to change the bamboo strips to a darker color. The color change is found through the entire plank. Carbonizing creates many different tones which can not be precisely controlled.

The best bamboo for floor grows on the top portion of a mountain with moderate rain, is five to eight years old, is harvested in the winter, is five to seven inches in diameter and is located in either the Fujian or Zehjiang provinces in China. The bamboo harvested in these provinces is harder and more stable than other locations due to the environmental conditions.

Bamboo flooring and panels are strips of bamboo glued together. The glues produced and consumed in China typically are laden with formaldehyde. When selecting your bamboo flooring product, ensure that only quality adhesives were used in its manufacture, and avoid cheap adhesives which are typically laden with formaldehyde.

The Perfect Addition to the Home: BBQ Hut

Adding a BBQ hut to your home is one of the most thoughtful things you can do. You need to choose the correct style as well as construction so as to have something that will match with your lifestyle. You also need to select the highest quality materials. When you go for quality materials, then you will have a construction that will last for a long time serving the purpose for which it is meant for. You will also get better results after everything has been settled. You need to buy the best materials and choose a company that is reputable in this area.

When you consider the above, then you should be able to carry out a purchase that is trouble free and one that will allow you to enjoy for years to come.

Trend

This kind of construction has been used for a long time for different purposes. The use depends on the location with some using it as a police to meet. There are yet others who use it to have some moments alone. It is also very common with the gamekeepers or people who love shooting.

In the present day, however, people are quickly discovering new ways in which they can make use of it. People are now utilizing them for barbecues. This is, basically, where people make their very own barbecues. This used to be a thing for wealthy owners, but the trend is quickly catching.

Who needs one?

Today, it is not only the wealthy who buy them. In fact, companies running events and people doing shoots are finding them useful. Individuals and families are also purchasing them and using them for different things. There are those who use it as an extra room. Yet others use them as their party rooms and they can be used for sleepovers. The best thing about this option is how versatile they are.

Barbecuing is now a phenomenon and it seems to be growing very rapidly in various civilizations. The value of this industry has seen a tremendous increase over the past few years. It is worth billions in the present day.

Drawbacks

In as much as people are enjoying the constructions, there is one major drawback- rain. Having an outdoor grill in an area that is soggy is not always ideal. This makes the hut the most suitable option if you want those coals to keep on burning.

It is very common to see bespoke constructions. Buying the best construction is a great investment. You should narrow down the choices before making a final selection.

When making a selection, stay local as much as you can. Make sure you choose a company that operates in your area. This makes the construction very easy and you can apply a hands-on kind of approach as you build. You also save on the shipping costs that would have been applied if you chose a company out of town.

Make sure that you do as much research as possible. This will help you narrow down the options that are open to you and make the most informed decision.

Blu-Ray Or Not

The industry has settled in with Blu-ray as the disk format for HDTV. Now the question that people are starting to ask is; is it time to switch to Blu-ray and get that new DVD player? Blu-ray is the new DVD format that stores movies almost exclusively in 1080p resolution. I am sure that we have all heard of HDTV, but what is 1080p? Is 1080p better than the HDTV that we will all be watching on our TV's in 2009?

What is the down side of Blu-ray? What is the up side of playing the highest resolution DVD's that the industry has to offer?

1080p is simply the number of original lines going across the screen, counted from top to bottom. 2008 over the air TV's were using 480i resolution, in other words 240 lines were being set over the air and the television set displayed each frame frame with a slight offset. The (i) is for interlacing and (p) is for progressive, where each frame is displayed only once at twice the resolution as the same number with the (i).

Standard DVD players can output via the component connections, typically 480p and some slightly more expensive models will output 720p and even 1080p by internal processing of the 480p image on the DVD.

So why switch to Blu-ray?

Advantages:

Lets first look at the advantages of Blu-ray DVD's.

1. The original image is stored normally at a resolution of 1080p, the highest currently offered for home use.
2. The signal is digital, no more snow in the picture.
3. The main output is HDMI, which carries up to eight channels of digital sound as well as the picture over one cable.
4. Most Blu-ray players can convert your existing DVD's to 1080p for a better viewing experience.

Disadvantages:

1. 1080p is great, although you will need a screen larger than 42 inches to see the difference, so unless you are going to also buy a large HDTV it will be hard to tell a difference.
2. If you do not have a HDTV with HDMI inputs, you will have to use the lower signal outputs of the Blu-ray.
3. If you have a projector that is a few years old, it may not have the HDMI inputs required for the best results.
4. Be aware that Blu-ray uses High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for copy protection. If your display device does not have the secret key, or has any problems you will not see a picture.
5. Because of the handshake requirements of HDCP and the signal processing required for Blu-ray, there is a noticeably high time delay when starting to play the DVD and the main feature. Expect pauses at the start or when searching.
6. HDMI requires much more expensive cables. The high quality cables are larger that not as flexible this can cause problems connecting to the display device when in a close space. The HDMI connector is also small with no locking screws. Connection can sometimes become a problem.
Cost:
Not only is the Blu-ray more expensive, the DVD's are also much more expensive. Currently you can get any content on standard DVD that is offered on Blu-ray DVD.
Buying a Blu-ray DVD player will almost result in purchasing a complete theater system to replace what you are currently using, or you will not see any improvement.

Bottom line:

I recommend that the last item you purchase for your entertainment center is a Blu-ray DVD player. Upgrade your TV first and make sure that it is at least 1080p. Go as large as you can afford or have space for.

I have a 42-inch 1080p LCD television for normal viewing and I may never install a Blu-ray because we can not see the difference. I do have a small inexpensive DVD player that can upscale to 1080p through the HDMI output, but I prefer to use the component output at 720p for all my DVD viewing. I set the TV to the cinema mode to fill the screen with 16: 9 movies and it as good as it gets for a 42-inch display.

I also have a theater for the larger movie experience. The 20-year-old projector still gives a great picture with a line double image and the CRT's create a nice soft image that is easy on the eyes. At some point I will upgrade to a 1080p HDTV projector for my nine-foot wide screen and then maybe, just maybe in about ten more years consider a Blu-ray DVD player

The 5×5 Secret Rules In Design And Advertising – Part 1 – Basic Rules

Set 1: 5 Basic Rules

1. Creativity is nothing. (Without skills)

Some people are born creative. They slop over with insightful bubbles and always come up with a brand new and ground-breaking idea. But what makes a creative person a good designer? What matters is your ability to produce. Creativity alone is highly valuable, agreed, but what if you can’t turn it into someting of true value?

Take a look at the advertising industry. The classic creative team consists of a Creative Director with at least one Art Director and Copywriter. Now – how exactly did the CD get his job?

In general, he ascended from one of the latter positions. He can only do his job if he knows how to get off the pot – in other words, he has to know how to channel his creativity. That’s why this is rule number one: Without skills, creativity means nothing. But let’s move on to the 2nd secret rule of design:

2. Ideas are everything. (With the proper inspiration)

When a new task arrives, we can’t always rely on our natural ability to come up with a great idea. Sure, we may have a bunch of ideas whirring around in our head, and we start putting them down – but what if we find out that they don’t turn out the way we expected? And what if we have a blockade and no ideas at all?

In these cases, we have to undertake steps in order to come up with an idea. Naturally, an idea can’t be forced. How often did you sit and wait for it to come, but nothing happened?

What we can do is vitalize our minds by opening the door to inspiration. We can do this in various different ways, at the desk as well as outside. Sometimes, taking a walk helps free your mind, or getting together with friends. There are various techniques to get inspired, and you may already know one or two of them.

3. Your computer is your most important tool – right AFTER your brain and a blank sheet of paper

Your brain does all the work, not Mac or Adobe. It’s always better to have a plan before getting started. It’s like “normal” life. Read How to design better and faster than trial & error, and The Sheet vs. The Screen, both on Nubloo.com.

4. Valuable resources are a grave necessity

Do you know how much time you’ve spent searching for a photograph or image to use in your designs, in total? If you’re not lucky enough to have a photographer you can work with, or if your client’s budget doesn’t allow custom photography, you’ll need a great deal of valuable photos, illustrations, and even video at your disposal. Stock sites do a great job here. There are lots out there, however only a few ones you can consider truly valuable. Prices are from free to over 500 $ for an image. While free sites usually don’t have the quality, and you should consider setting up a shooting before paying 500 dollars for a photograph, there are some excellent sites around where you can get high-quality images for 1$ each, royalty-free.

For that, there’s no way around iStockphoto. They claim to be the world’s busiest image market. Other good sites are Dreamstime, 123rf and StockXpert — check these out as well.

5. Everything you do has been done already

Do you know Ads of the World? It’s a teriffic website posting creative advertising daily. The community has the chance to comment on every ad. If you take a look around, you’ll quickly discover at least one community member commenting with a single word: DONE.

That can be quite amusing. Considering the fact that the majority of ideas in advertising has already been done in one way or another, I tend to *cough* smile at these fellas who are spooking around in the forums and enlighten us with their “done” on every single page. Who can say what’s an original idea? There’s a thin line between inspiration and plagiarism, I agree; but sometimes, a splendid idea for brand A is based on a great idea for product B which has been adapted from a wonderful idea for service C. It depends on the adaption. Opening Vogue or GQ and seeing the exact same ad for 10 different fashion brands on the first 10 pages – done, done, done! Building on a great idea and creating something new, wonderfully creative and beautiful for another brand: well done.

What do you think about this?

Next week’s post, our 2nd post in this series, will be about the 5 Rules of Composition.
