How To Avoid Home Hazards

Most accident happens because people are forgetful or careless. They put bottles containing strong medicines in the kitchen near bottles with look-alike vitamin pills or low calorie sweeteners. Without reading the labels, other people might take the wrong pills. Even plants which serve to decorate and beautify a home can be a hazard. Many of the leaves and stems of house plants can be irritating and even mildly poisonous. If a child or pet breaks off a piece of a plant and eats it, it could cause stomach ache, vomiting, or irritation to the skin.

Various kinds of home cleaners such as bleaches, soaps, and liquid and powdered cleansers are potentially dangerous. It is important to read the labels on such products carefully. Most of them contain chemicals which could cause death if swallowed, or serious irritation to the eyes and skin if touched. Cleaning solutions should never be mixed or left open because the fumes also can be dangerous to the eyes and lungs.

Another danger in the home is the improper use of frozen foods. These foods should be thawed in the refrigerator and not on a counter during the thawing period, especially in the summertime. If frozen foods are allowed to stand too long out of a refrigerator, bacteria which can cause food poisoning start to grow.

One unbreakable rule to follow with so many potentially dangerous substances around is NEVER LEAVE SMALL CHILDREN ALONE IN THE HOUSE. If some reason, a person has taken a poison, call a doctor immediately and then read the label on the container carefully. The doctor or the label might tell you to induce vomiting or to dilute the poison in the stomach. Following are some suggestions on how to do each.

To induce vomiting:

1 tablespoon of ipecac or 1 teaspoon dry mustard mixed with c cup water or places a blunt object, or your finger, at the back of the victim's throat.

To dilute:

1 tablespoon activated charcoal mixed with water or milk or water: 1 or 2 cups for children under 5; up to 1 quart for an adult.

Some dangers in your home:

1. Handles of pots sticking out over stove edge.

2. Cans of poisonous cleansers.

3. Standing on folding chair to reach cabinet shelf.

4. Ragged can top left on can standing on counter.

5. Open garbage pail.

6. Appliances left plugged in when not in use.

7. Person in tub turning on radio.

8. Bottle with poison label benefit sink.

9. Wet floor.

10. Bottles without labels in medicine chest.

11. Straight razors open on chest.

12. Fireplace without screen.

13. Scissors left out of sewing basket on couch.

14. Child sticking something into open socket.

15. Too many wires in one receptacle.

16. Power tool running while man leans on it.

17. Overcrowded electrical plug.

18. Storage of rags, paint cans and gasoline.

19. Lighted cigarette near flammable objects.

20. Child playing with dangerous tools.

Another fire hazard in the home, as you have seen, is the misuse of electrical extension cords. Too many coming out of one plug or running them under rugs where they can be frayed or worn to the wire are only some of the mistakes people make. Extensions should be used very sparingly and never where small children or pets can play with them.

Abandoned furniture, such as old cabinets or refrigerators, creates another hazard. There have been many cases of children playing with such furniture, accidently locking themselves in and suffocating before they could be found. The doors should always be removed from old refrigerators or cabinets when no longer in use.

One last word should be said about the bathroom, where the majority of home accidents occurs. Soap should never be left lying in a tub. A bath mat or towel should always be left lying in a tub. A bath mat or towel should always be left lying in the tub. A bath mat or towel should always be available to stand on. Soapy surfaces in a shower or tub should always be rinsed off to prevent slipping. Where possible, grab bars should be installed to help balance one's self. Never reach for a shower curtain rod or a handle on a soap dish.

Natural Light Photography Techniques in Taking Better Digital Photos

Understanding natural light photography techniques is vital if you wish to take better digital photos.

Natural light can transform an ordinary subject into a fascinating image, without the use of artificial light or modern technology. Without doubt, whether natural or man created, light is the most important element in photography.

After all, when you are taking a photograph you are actually capturing the light that is reflected or radiated from your subject and whatever else is in front of you. The camera just records the light that it receives, whether adjusted by man or technology. It can make no allowance for color distortion.

The Dynamic Range is the range of brightness levels in a scene, from the dark shadows to the bright highlights. Natural light photography techniques favor having the light where you need it so unimportant areas left in shadow or burnt out by intense light. No matter how strong the light is, you can always expose to show detail in one part of the image, but you may well lose detail in another part of your photo because your camera has not got a wide enough dynamic range to capture everything.

Some of the latest Digital Cameras have the technology to adjust the compensation level in pixels to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged to automatically create better images.

In any case the end results is up to you, the photographer. You need to watch out for patches of white, or light areas in your images. A viewer's eye will always go to the brightest part of a scene, so make sure you cut out any bright spots that will drag attention away from your main subject. Of course, where the whole background is light, as with snow, a contrast dark object will attract attention first.

"Hard" light casts deep shadows with distinct outlines, while "Soft" light, if it casts shadows at all, makes them soft, with indistinct outlines. An example of hard light would be the sun overhead at noon in a clear sky, while an example of soft or "filtered" light would have the illumination cast by the sun shining through clouds. Soft light on a bright but cloudy day is often best when photography people.

The effective use of cloudy days should not be overlooked in natural photography. However, a very even, shadowless light can make for a rather flat image. Although hard light can give you problems with harsh contrast, it usually gives better texture to your subject, except when it is directly on the subject, ie coming from behind you and shining directly over your shoulder. In these circumstances your subject may be drained of contrasting shadows and texture, but every feature and detail will be clear.

Back lighting often makes it easy to separate your subject from the background. Your fill-in flash can be used for best effect in back lit situations where you might be closer to your subject.

Natural light varies according to the time of day, weather, and time of year. And also what altitude you are shooting at (high altitudes have bluer light as the UV content is greater).

"Cold" light has a blue tinge; "warm" light has a red tinge. Dawn light tend to be cooler than sunset, for example, but both are warm when compared to midday sunlight.

Your brain compensates to some degree for these different lights, so that a white handkerchief rough looks white and a yellow banana looks yellow no matter whether you see them in sunlight or under fluorescent tubes. But a camera can not do this and will simply capture the light reflected off your subject. As the light from these two sources is quite different (most fluorescent light is in fact green), the colors will look wrong unless you make an adjustment to take the color of the light into account.

The adjustment of white balance on your camera can be used not only to correct color casts but also to warm up a cold overcast day.

In natural light photography it is the light that makes the photo. If the light is not good, the photo will not succeed.

Finding ways for using natural light photography techniques for taking better digital photos is not difficult. It just takes a little concentration, a clear vision, a good guide and a good camera.

Which Style of Chandelier Suits Your Lighting Needs?

When it comes to lighting effects, not all chandeliers are alike. Here is a run down of the different types of chandeliers and the type of light they are likely to cast over your dining room
table.

Late Victorian: The late Victorian style of chandelier lighting is very similar to the late seventies style of chandelier. This style consist of stacked circular glass blown globes that are stacked in brass wheels of usually eight and then four tiers. This type of chandelier casts a very soft pearly glow and look best in a dim wood paneled room. The more stark seventies versions with the pure white opaque glass look best hanging over a kitchen table and tend to cast a much brighter light.

Gas Electric: This style of chandelier consist of tulip shaped flutes and is usually made of heavy engraved glass. In Victorian times there would have been candles inside these frosted flutes
but now a days there is candle shaped light bulbs or regular light bulbs. This style of chandelier which is usually mounted on a metallic wheel, whether it be brass, iron or metal, are usually very bright and sometimes look better somewhere like a bathroom where you need lots of light and not necessarily in a dining room where something more subtle is required.

Arts and Crafts: You know you are looking at an Arts and Crafts style of chandelier if the glass shades are dangling downwards from the wheel rather than sitting like cups on the rim of the wheel. This is characterized by balanced mobiles that consist of two to four to six lampshades on a rustic looking metal frame that hangs from the ceiling.

Mission Style: If the chandelier has black iron limbs or wheels then it is probably mission style. Mission style chandeliers usually also have square shades made of streaked white or pearly opaque glass. This type of chandelier usually casts a dimmer light then most.

Wagon Wheel: This eclectic chandelier was a common sight in the suburbs in the seventies and basically consist of a wooden wheel that was topped with miniature lamps shades. It casts a
nice, yellowish dim light for a dining room.

Atomic Age: Also known as a fifties revival style, these are the chandeliers that look like metal starbursts from which shoot multicolored Christmas bulbs. This unique style never looks that dated as it looks both modern and antique at the same time and the light that it can cast is often pretty because of the different colored bulbs. It does however cast a dimmer light than most.

Art Deco Chandeliers – These are getting rarer and rarer and cast beautiful soft lights the colored round pendant drops and flower shaped flowered shades that are characteristic of the style. The glass on an art deco chandelier is often green or pink and it can also be frosted or streaked with color.

The Dangers of Water Leaks on Buildings

While it is true that all buildings allow for some air leaks, the difference is how much air is leaked from building to building. The air infiltration and exfiltration happens through the walls, roofs, and windows of the building envelope. The severity of the air leaks can be problematic as varying temperatures, water leakage, and drafts can cause building structure damage and waste energy.

Air leaks can cause a variety of problems at different severity. Factors which affect this include the air flows direction along with other environmental factors. These problems can include:

Water leaks – A water leak can be analyzed by a technician to prevent internal leaks and the damage they cause. If the leak is combined with air infiltration, the water can find its way into the building envelope where serious damage can be done.

Condensation – Condensation occurs when warm, humid air moves its way through a leaky envelope and finds an area at or below the dew point. Air leaks that lead to condensation can occur because of both infiltration and exfiltration.

Mechanical systems and occupant complaints – Air leaks can stress the load on mechanical systems and weaken their efficiency. Both infiltration and exfiltration can increase the stress on mechanical systems and make them work harder which can lead to occupant discomfort and potential mechanical system failure.

For air leaks to be corrected or prevented, an air barrier needs to be in place. The barriers location is determined by the installation factors. Air barriers also need to be able to withstand both negative and positive pressures.

Air barriers can be in many forms, in veneer or cladding construction, the air barrier can be a self-adhered asphalt-modified-membrane or building wrap. If the building is made of concrete, the air barrier is the concrete and sealant at the joints. In glass or metal wall curtains, the air barrier is the glazing gaskets on the interior and the seals at the joint frames.

It is also important for facility managers to consider the weatherproofing reliability and functionality of doors and windows.

Facility managers must establish an working, reliable air barrier for their building envelopes to protect against water leaks and condensation within the system taking into consideration all of the details, components, transition, and material of the building envelope.

Top Reasons Why Document Scanning Makes Sense

Document scanning is not new technology and has been around now for many years. We have seen document scanning become mainstream in the last few years with advent of multifunction machines that print, copy and scan. Walk into any office supply store and you we will see an isle full of fax machines that scan, as well as print. There is off the shelf scanning software that will not only allow you to scan, but will allow you to create keyword searchable images for under $99.

1. Access – Scanned documents are easily shared by employees and staff who need fast access to business information. In most cases documents can be shared across a LAN, WAN or the Internet.

2. Security – Most document management systems allow for security at many levels. In most cases access to documents can be limited or restricted by user.

3. Compliance – Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, Patriot Act all have requirements for safe-guarding information. Document retrieval systems that track user activity and provide audit trails help with many of the compliance guidelines businesses must adhere to.

4. Disaster Recovery – Although not the main reason, Disaster Recover or Contingency Planning is a by product of document scanning. Once document are scanned into an electronic format the images can be safely placed in a safe location, usually a fire-proof vault or offsite location.

5. Cost Savings – There are many costs associated with maintaining paper filing systems, labor to file, floor space, offsite storage, retrieval costs, boxes, file folders, faxing documents, toner cartridges. All of these costs are eliminated with document scanning.

6. Customer Service – Think about who your customers are, how long does it take to get your customer the answers they need. What if you could access that information in seconds. Would this have a positive impact on your customer service. It would if you were a bank, hospital, manufacturer, university, retailer or any other industry.

7. Space – Floor space can be reclaimed once file cabinets and boxes have been eliminated due to document scanning.

These are just a few of the reason why document scanning makes sense. For more information regarding document scanning services, systems and solutions visit us at www.imagingconnections.com

Laminate Flooring Pros and Cons

Laminate flooring is a relatively new but very popular flooring option. It has only been around for about 20 years but is by far the fastest growing segment of the flooring industry. There are very strong reasons for this incredible popularity but there are also negatives that you should be aware of if you are looking to purchase a laminate floor.

Although most laminate floor styles look like hardwood floors they are not and they are not a type of engineered wood floor either. Because the pattern in most advertisements for laminate flooring is wood grain many people get the mistaken impression that it is a real hardwood veneer laminated to a fiberboard core but that is simply not the case. They are actually paper imprinted with a high quality photographic image, usually of wood, although it can also be printed to simulate ceramic, terrazzo, marble or terra cotta. This paper is then laminated to a high density fiber board (HDF) base. The laminate surface is then sealed with a protective long lasting coating, usually a highly scratch resistant aluminum oxide finish. The idea is to get a tough and durable flooring material that is also very inexpensive and easy to care for. Like any attempt to simulate the look of wood sometimes it is very effective and at other times it is not particularly convincing. The thicker laminate floors (12 mm.) Actually sound like a hardwood floor when you walk on them. Typically, laminate floors capture the look of a hardwood floor but do not always have the warmth, character and beauty. The best way to decide if the look is acceptable for you is to request a sample from the manufacturer. Most companies offer free samples of their laminate floor patterns.

The advantages of laminate floors make it a very convincing option. Quality laminate floors are generally much more water, stain and scratch resistant and will not fade or dent when compared to hardwood floors. Hardwood floors also require more maintenance and are not as durable. Hardwood floors are porous and as such are subject to stains, water absorption and dents. The better laminate floors have water resistant cores and the edges are wax impregnated so they are suitable for use in bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms that have occasional water spills. Most of the high-end laminate floors come with a lifetime warranty and can handle heavy traffic areas. However, the buyer has to be aware of some of the cheaper laminate floors. Many can not be used in bathrooms or kitchens because the core is not protected from moisture absorption. Many warranties specifically state that the product is not intended for bathrooms or other areas subject to water spills. Also, the seal on the top of some of the cheaper laminates will start to show wear after only a few years in heavy traffic locations. Many of the less expensive laminates have only a 10 year warranty. So make sure you match the quality of the floor with the traffic requirements and water exposure of the area.

It is difficult to compete with the time tested beauty, elegance and warmth of hardwood floors. Some people are not comfortable with simulations or artificial anything and will only settle for the real thing. However, if the sticker shock of hardwood floors has you reeling laminate floors may give you what you are looking for at an acceptable price and with better durability and reduced maintenance.

Tips on How to Create Your Own Vacuum Cleaner

Things you will need:

* Empty Bottle or Jar
* Garden Hose
* Kitchen Sponge
* Silicone
* Fast Fill Electrical Air Pump (usually made for air mattresses)

Most people would think that a vacuum cleaner makes produces a vacuum. Actually, it pulls air in one end and releases it in the other end. It is the air pressure that causes the air to rush in to the unit to replace the released air. In the machine, there is a filter that keeps holds the dirt and allow the air to bypass. You can do an experiment by making your own vacuum! Or you make the cheapest vacuum by acquiring some parts. Here are the steps:

Step 1

Cut a long hose into two pieces, one is shorter than the other. The short hose will be connected to the bottle with pump and the longer hose will suck the dirt. Make sure that the length of the hose is enough to make the cleaning process faster.

Step 2

Mount the hose to the top of the bottle by cutting a hole on top. Glue one end of the shooter hose to the whole. Make sure that the whole will be covered up with the hose. The other end of the shorter hose will be connected to the air pump that will blow the air out.

Step 3

Setup a filter. Ensure that the bottle can withstand air pressure. You can use a plastic storage jar. Cut a hole in one side of the bottle. This will serve as the exhaust hole of the vacuum cleaner. The dust should be held inside the vacuum while the air passes out. You can use a kitchen sponge as the filter. Glue the sponge inside the bottle over the hole.

Step 4

Finish the connections. Attach one end of the longer hose using the silicone to the other hole in the air pump (the hole that sucks the air). Ensure that all connections are tightly sealed to avoid any air leakage. The sponge is the only open area, where the air will be blown out.

Now you have a complete system. Air and dirt go in the longer hose. Then it goes through the pump, and is blown through the toilet hose. The air and dirt ends up in the bottle. Air pressure builds up in the bottle and the air is pushed through the sponge, leaving the dirt behind.

Note: Everything will pass through the fast fill electrical pump. This is not its main purpose. It can not handle coins, nails, or other hard objects. This is the type of vacuum cleaner that will not last long, and it does not offer an easy way to empty the dirt out of the bottle container. This vacuum has limited usage. This is just an experiment on learning how a vacuum work and it can only get rid small amount of dust. If you want to have an efficient vacuum, there are numerous models available in the market.

Digital Cosmetics

If you are over sixty, you probably do not like to have your picture taken. Older faces are prime victims to harsh lighting, deep shadows, sharp lenses and unforgiving close ups. You probably look fine at night with candle light on your face but once your grand daughter shows up with her digital camera, your pleasant image is history. Arcsoft, Adobe and Corel all image editors with the necessary tools.

There are a few measures you can take to alleviate the situation. One is to insist on a full length shot far enough away to produce a small and indistinct face. Another is to slather on the make up and hope for the best. Finally, you can beg to be out of the picture. This last punishes you as well as your loved ones and makes one look vain.

A favorite picture of you that everyone likes can be improved digitally quite easily. It just requires a little effort on the photographer's part to familiarize yourself with the necessary tools and methods.

Starting at the top, there are stray hairs and dark roots ruining the hair dew. Stray hair is easily cloned out of existence by copying the adjacent area with a feathered clone stamp set at fifty per cent transparency. Dark roots require cloning an area of the hair of the proper color and running in the same direction if straight. I recommend a thirty per cent transparency using multiple passes for a realistic effect. Work at the highest enlargement of the working area that fits on your screen.

Shiny foreheads are tricky, but can often be improved with a touch of the disturb brush. Set the brush at medium strength and at fifty per cent transparency. Place the size at twice the area of the highlight and feather at 100%. Do not try to darken the area but a fill fill with the air brush will do wonders. Use the eye dropper to choose an adjacent skin color and fill in the highlight at three per cent transparency.

Blemishes will disappear using the clone at seventy per cent transparency, copying from a near by unblemished area of skin. At eighty five per cent transparency, drag the clone over the bags under the eyes for a younger look. Do not over do this effect.

The whites of the eyes can be lightened if done carefully. Outline the whites of the eyes with the dotted line mask and make an object of the masked areas. In the brightness / contrast box click on the brightness once at three per cent. Do not try to make any other adjustments to this area of the eyes. It is possible to open the eyes somewhat but the method is quite advanced. If there is no highlight in the eye, you can place one with a two or three pixel brush using a light warm gray color. A round 100% feathered shape is normal or a crescent shape for an out of doors picture. If the highlight looks too prominent you can use the softener brush to dull it down without removing it.

Teeth often come out dark and yellowish in digital photographs. Draw a dotted circle around the teeth and using the brightness / contrast box, lighten the teeth at five per cent strength and change the color balance with a three per cent magenta adjustment. Crooked teeth can be fixed by reverse cloning a good tooth from the other side of the mouth. However, this method requires a little practice and advanced training to be successful.

Too pale skin can be corrected by using the histogram center arrow. Slide this arrow slightly to the right for darker skin. Conversely, sliding it to the left will darken the middle tones for a simulated sun tan. The ends of the histogram representing the whites (right side) and blacks (left side) remain attached to the extreme ends.

There are other effects that will improve the face. The softening brush used judiciously will smooth the skin, the soft focus filter has the same effect but might be too strong a result. The color balance can be used to warm up the face by masking the face and head and adjusting the color balance two per cent yellow and two per cent red. If the effect is too noticeable, try one per cent. Remember blemishes, windy conditions and dark shadows are temporary conditions. A photograph is forever.

Painting an Existing Wood Fence

If you have a wood fence it’s a beautiful thing but over time the elements wear it down and you may have even scratched it with a lawn mower or snow shovel. Either way eventually it needs to be repainted and as with most projects around the house this one is easy to do yourself and low cost.

Besides good weather, this is what you’ll need: paint, possibly primer, a good brush, a roller (choose the size depending on the fence), a roller extension, cleaning supplies (rubber gloves, a pale with soup and warm water, a couple of rags), sand paper, scraper, maybe a kneeling pad.

Now, before you start painting you have to make sure the fence is clean. Here are some suggestions:

• Remove any grass, shrubbery, seeds, and the like from the fence.

• Wash off dust, soil, or any other dirt like bird poop with warm water and a little detergent.

• If the fence touches any parts of the house you may want to separate the edges with painter’s tape.

• It’s a good idea to have some card board or thin sheets of wood handy to slip under the fence so you don’t get the brush dirty from the ground when painting the underneath. It will also help block any branches that may still be in the way.

While you are cleaning, inspect the fence for other problems:

• Is any paint chipping? If so you’ll need to do the following. Scrape off the old paint and sand the edges a little to smoothen them out. If the wood is bare you may need to add a little primer on the spot. If so, let the primer spots dry before moving on to the real paint.

• Loose planks? If you find parts of the fence are seriously beginning to wear you may need to nail them back or replace the piece.

• Termites: They show up when you least expect it. If you find signs of them replace those planks too.

Painting:

Ok; you’ve made it to the real part of the job. Don’t worry if it took a while to get here. It’s better to have the fence ready and free of all other obstacles than have to stop painting in the middle because of one of the above issues.

1. Stir the paint to make sure its all one color and not clumpy

2. Pour your paint in the roller pan at the bottom.

3. Take your roller, dip it in the tray, and begin from the top down. Maybe use the brush for the top open grain. If you hit those spots first you can remove any dripping as you make your way down.

• NOTE: If your fence has a plank and then opening and then another plank (your standard white picket fence), it’s a good idea to do one plank at a time but do the fence in sections. For instant do a row of one frontal side with one edge and then come back and do the other when it’s dry. By doing this you prevent touching the opposite edge when the paint is still wet.

4. Use the brush for any touch ups. Hopefully you won’t need a second coat but if you do just follow the same steps.

A Rarely Used Strength Secret

Most trainers and strength coaches all over the world use a few strength building exercises, the squat, the dead lift, the power clean for over all body power. These are great strength builders, but how effective are they really? And do they promise all the hype of real strength building?

I will tell you there is a better way of building overall body strength that will transfer to all athletic sports and everyday life. It's an exercise that our bodies are made for. You do not need a lot of weight for a total over all body workout.

If you look and think how the body has been used for centuries you will see that some things modern day trainers look at as full body workouts are damaging to the body.

The squat is considered the "King of exercises" but how often do you really need to put 300lbs on or shoulder in real life and stand up? The fact is that if you ever did need to stand up with 300lbs the chances are you would fail. Why? Because, in the real world 300 lbs that you are lifting would never be balanced, it would be awkward and most men that could squat 300lbs would have a tough time standing up with 200 lbs on their shoulders.

Squatting is big in football, for instance a lineman is always coming out of a squat, there is more pushing than anything else. The pushing will require overall body strength and a big part is the core and not one of the 3 exercises I mentioned will strengthen the core to a point of real function.

Same goes with the dead lift, deadlift 400lbs now grab a 250lb rock and lift it up. The rock is a lot lighter but there is no nice bar to grab your body needs to call on muscle memory to lift something compact, awkward with a whole different body dynamic.

The power clean is another story, most people do not do it right. Most people are doing it like an explosive reverse curl. Olympic style weight lifters do this correctly most others do not.

The body does not know whether you are lifting sandbags, logs, weights, digging ditches or moving furniture it's all weight.

But the one thing you can do to build a functional strong body from head to toe is the simple method of carrying and carrying an unbalanced object for time or distance up hill and downhill. I say it will build strength from head to toe because carrying will strengthen the entire body and the core muscles that are required in all sports and in everything else that will need total body strength and the head meaning it takes mental toughness to carry a weight for time or a predetermined distance.

The great thing is a weight as little as 40 or 50lbs will enough for most men try carrying a 50lb sand bag, rock, log for a m mile or more switching the object from shoulder to shoulder. I like to use a 70 or 100lb heavy bag for walking hills and climbing steps and walking wooded trails. And if you want to build heavily muscled traps and shoulders try bearing and carrying and let me know how them shoulders and traps feel.

Shouldering and carrying an awkward object should be a big part of any strength training program. Balanced objects fool you into thinking you are stronger than you actually are. Just like bodyweight exercises that require more muscles to do pushups than it does to do bench presses.

Crafting Your Elevator Pitch

You probably know what an "elevator pitch" is, but do you own one that describes your business? If not, let's create one, right now. It's easy if you know how.

Crafting an elevator pitch requires planning. Not only do you need to know your business, but also more importantly, you need to know your target market.

Who Is Your Target Market and What Should You Say to Them?

Identifying Your Niche – First you need to identify your target market. Who are they and where do they exist? The clearer you can identify, the more effective your service or product can serve that population.

Be as specific as possible and find a niche that you can dominate. If you are a doctor, you will most certainly make more money being a heart surgeon than a family practitioner.

Although you can serve greater audience by being a family practitioner in your city, if you happen to be the only doctor who can handle heart surgeries, you can collect premium fee for your service.

It's better to be "number one" in a small niche than "number five" in a scheduled market. Think about Xerox; they dominate the copy machine niche but not so in the printer industry.

When crafting an effective elevator pitch, think big but serve small. Do not try to sell your product or service to everyone because you only become a generalist instead of specialist.

Crafting Your Message – This part explains why people should hire you. Focus your message on your customers instead of yourself.

How do you do this? You do this by identifying what problem your products and services can solve.

For example, if you sell cars, do not advertise that you are the "the leader and number one dealership in Arizona!" This means nothing to your customers because your message focuses on yourself instead of their needs.

Instead, you can say that your dealership "helps people with credit challenge qualify for cars." You see the difference? Focus on your customers' needs instead of your self-serving interest.

If someone wants to know what my business does, I tell the person "my consulting provides small business owners ideas to advertise, market and create better identity."

Typically, this elevator pitch gives my potential customer the opportunity to further investigate my ability by asking me to demonstrate specific examples.

The more specific you can articulate, demonstrate, explain, compare, persuade why you do what you do, the greater your message educates customers about your advantage.

An elevator pitch … is really your unique selling proposition. A 30 second message that focuses on the needs of your niche that will not only identify your business and but also recognize your expertise.

Spend time crafting an effective elevator pitch and outdo your competition.
