What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of PVC Pipes?

PVC pipe is primarily used for conveying water and waste water. It is a durable product that can be welded using solvents, heat and o-rings. Different formulations are used for different applications. The one used in almost all home irrigation and plumbing is typically white and is designed for potable use. There is a specific interior type that can be used for hot and cold water. White PVC is also used for sanitation conveyance from the home to a respective disposal method (Septic or municipal) it also can be used for potable water, if you want to run three or four inch water pipe.

Advantages of plastic pipes:

Plastic pipes are light in weight, tough, resistant to chemical attack and available in large lengths.

They reduce the cost of handling, transportation and installation.

Less number of joints facilitates the speed and reduces chances of leakage.

They are rust resistant.

These pipes have good elastic properties.

Their adaptability to earth movements is superior.

Smooth internal surface of the pipes offer less friction.

Due to less friction it saves the energy in the conveyance of water.

Disadvantages of plastic pipes:

Due to their non-decomposing property, plastic pipes are not installed in high temperature.

They are easily cracked.

At higher temperatures, the strength of plastic pipes reduces.

It estimated that many people want to know are PVC water supply pipe safe?

PVC/CPVC – rigid plastic pipes similar to PVC drain pipes but with thicker walls to deal with municipal water pressure, introduced around 1970. PVC should be used for cold water only, or venting. CPVC can be used for hot and cold potable water supply. Connections are made with primers and solvent cements as required by code.

Yes, they are safe.

Modern PVC should be fine, probably better than copper. There are many forms of PVC out there and yes some of them do contain harmful plasticizers, but these are used to make them softer (such as cling film, or glad wrap wherever you are from to wrap food in). Under heat and in contact with fatty foods like cheese these will migrate.

PVC piping however these days is just PVC.

Get a filter jug and just filter your drinking water, as there are much more contaminants which could enter your water before reaching the apartment and it tastes better too.

For more pipe information on pvc drainage pipe and water supply pipe, you can go online for more information. Look forward to explore with you.

Hockey Aggression in Young Players

I’ve heard countless parents describe their young hockey player as a “good little player” who’s missing that one big ingredient… “aggression”. What they are usually referring to is “sports aggression” and not aggression in the more common sense of the word. In hockey coaching circles we call it “puck aggression”. A player who’s puck aggressive at the Novice level can really stand out because the fact is that most 7 and 8 year olds are not. What coaches will usually notice is a player’s desire to go towards the puck, to slam on the brakes when the play goes the other way, to jump into the fray trying to dislodge a puck, to back-check or in some cases, to bump a player off the play. These are very effective actions that allow a player to really shine out there.

Now, we know that we can’t force our kids to be more aggressive, that has to come naturally or from within. What coaches do to promote puck aggression can be seen in several types of drills that pit player against player in various game situations. For example, having any kind of drill that creates a race to the puck is also excellent for developing puck aggression. I’m a big believer that the intensity of a drill is the key to creating puck aggression. The key to teaching overall hockey aggression is to do it without the players even realizing it.

What parents can do to help little Frankie become more aggressive is to use positive re-enforcement when talking to them about their play. Challenge them to do a couple of small things each time they hit the ice. An easy one to focus on is back-checking. Encourage them to “get back” and break up a breakaway or a 2 on 1. And if they do, make sure to tell them afterwards what a great play it was and how “aggressive” they were to “skate back so fast and catch that guy from behind”. These small victories will multiply and will lead to a player’s desire to do aggressive things in the neutral zone and in the offensive zone too. It’s a snowball effect! Eventually you end up with a player who wants to be involved in all aspects of play.

Remember, you should never tell your 7 and 8 year old player to “get aggressive and go hit somebody”. That’s not cool. But reminding them that puck aggression will lead to them having more chances to shine will hopefully do the trick.

How to Build a Cat Window Box Cat Enclosure – DIY

Building your own cat window box can be a simple do it yourself project and bring great reward to your indoor cat. Many people residing in an apartment building or with little outdoor space can build a cat window box cat enclosure to allow their cats to bask in the sun and get some fresh air.

Since all windows are of different dimensions this article will outline the basic steps to build a cat window box, allowing you to adapt the design to your window measurements.

The easiest type of window to work with is a sash window. These are older style windows which slide up. However if you have a different window type do not despair, you can still build a cat window box, although you may need to get a little more creative.

It is a good idea to put the cat in another room while you are doing this particularly if they are bold and likely to find and open window just too tempting.

Grab a tape measure, pencil and paper, and prepare your cutting list. Once the room is secure open the window. Use the tape measure to accurately measure the width of the opening and consider the height you intend to make the box. Will be tall enough for your cat to stand in? Will it allow you to clean it out from time to time?

Consider how far you want the box to protrude from the interior wall of the house. You will need two pieces of plywood, one for the cat cage floor and one for the window frame. You will need to reduce the window frame width dimensions to allow the finished box to slip in and out of the window frame without damaging it.

Most large DIY stores or timber merchants can cut ply to size for you. It is worth having this done for you as the result is likely to be more precise than attempting to cut it with a hand saw at home.

You will also need to buy timber for the rails the window box will sit on outside your window and fastenings and screws to secure the whole structure in place.

Next you will enclose the structure with mesh and secure it to your window frame for extra durability. This way you can avoid using ugly brackets.

Cut the mesh to size using the appropriate tool; scissors for nylon and or shears for wire. Staple the mesh to the frame using about one staple every inch. Check the entire assembly for any sharp bits such as nails slivers or mesh.

Open the window and insert your cat window box into the opening. It should stay in place without any additional fastening. If you have sash windows closing the window down on top of the box will hold it fast but you need to screw the interior to the window from in some cases.

Allow your cat a couple of days to get used to their new cat window box. I have never seen a cat that does not eventually love their new outdoor cat enclosure.

Design of Rain Gutter Systems For Home Construction

After I received the 2008 edition of the State of Michigan building code I eagerly looked through the table of contents for rain gutters only to find no mention of these troubling troughs that hang at the edges of a roof. So I looked to the index only to be disappointed again. There was no mention specifically of rain gutter systems to be found. I am a licensed building contractor here in Michigan and have been repairing, reworking and cleaning gutters for over five years. Gutters are not designed into a house; they are simply tacked on as an afterthought by workers of various skills and abilities.

The long term maintenance problems and damage caused by poorly designed and installed gutters cost millions of dollars. Millions of dollars from injuries and even the death of homeowners trying to clean their gutters must also be taken into account. Start with the grade; how does water naturally flow around the house? The roof and gutters should be oriented so the water flows away from the house and never over walks, drives, decks or patios. A cistern to hold water for irrigation can then be the starting point for the design of your house.

Here are several design details that should be incorporated into the building code:

1. A downspout is required for a run of gutter not to exceed twenty feet. This will allow for slope of 1/20″ per linear foot giving proper drainage. This will decrease molds, mildew and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Subtract one foot for every inside or outside mitered corner. Example: a run of gutter with two turns should not exceed 18′ without a downspout.

2. Downspouts will be of the “commercial” (3″ X 4″ or 4″ round) size. The larger pipe will not clog with leaves and seeds as easily.

3. Gutters draining upper roofs over lower roofs must be accessible by ladder from the ground.

4.Downspouts will be fixed to the gutter by cutting tabs into the bottom of the trough then bending them down to allow a screw or pop rivet to fix the downspout to the gutter. This eliminates the outlet flange which leaks and causes leaves and seeds to catch.

5. One-piece “offset” elbows will be used instead of two-piece elbows that are commonly assembled on-site now. In my experience I have yet to see these one-piece offsets clog. The upper two-piece elbow is where the vast majority of clogs are found. Many times the entire downspout has to be removed and taken apart to clear the clog.

6. The vertical pipe will have a maximum of three turns; two at the outlet for the gutter and one at bottom extension.

7. Downspout pipes that are not vertical must be avoided!

8. The bottom of the lower elbow will be at least one foot above the grade with a four foot extension.

9. Downspouts or gutters will NEVER be let out onto a roof surface or into a roof valley!

10. A minimum of two pipe bands will be used for every downspout or every ten feet of downspout to fix the vertical pipe to the house.

11. “Internal” or “hidden” hangers with screws will be used instead of gutter nails. These internal hangers are far superior to old-fashioned nails that must be located precisely in the ends of rafters, ceiling joists or trusses to work properly.

12. “Two-by” ( 2 X 6 or 2 X 8) lumber will be used instead of one-inch planks now used to make the fascia. The lumber will be covered with pre-coated aluminum to permanently seal the wood from the elements. This will allow the internal hangers to be placed every twenty-four inches with little need for precision.

13. A gutter hanger will be at least six inches from the center of an outlet.

Too often houses are designed for curb appeal and the roof is not a considered as a functional system to protect the home from the elements but as a fashion statement. The gratuitous use of steep slopes, valleys, ridges, dormers, gables and even turrets will only decrease the long-term value of a house. Reducing water run-off and enhancing the irrigation needs of the landscaping can be a huge benefit to the environment. The cost to replace roofs, clean and maintain gutters and the potential damage from water intrusion must be balanced with the aesthetics of the home: form follows function; beauty is found in the functionality of the design.

Tips and Strategies For Wits & Wagers 2nd Edition Board Game

If you are looking for a different type of family board game, I’m going to share one with you that you might not have heard of. Maybe I’m just not “with it” but I just discovered this game this past Christmas when I was searching for a family type game that would be fun for adults, yet easy enough for an 8 year old kid.

The name of the game is Wits and Wagers by the maker North Star Games. They are known for making games that are quick to learn, that keep all players involved all the time, and for keeping the games short (about 20 minutes).

Here’s a quick introduction.

Basically everyone contributes a numerical answer, which are then spread across the board with corresponding payout odds for each answer. All players then have 30 seconds to place a wager on the answer they feel is correct (or closest to without going over). Seven rounds are played to complete one game. The person with the most chips wins.

Strategy 1: If you don’t have the slightest clue as to what the answer might be, ride with the person you think probably knows the answer. In other words, place your bets where that person placed his/her bet(s). If it is a football question, copy the person who you think is knowledgeable in football.

Strategy 2: With strategy 1 in mind, you can spurt out a subtle bluff when the question is read. For example, if the question asks, “What percentage of American’s pay their credit card bill in full?” You can blurt out, “Ohhhhh, I just read about that last week….” even though you have no clue what the answer is. You then bet heavily on your answer to lure other players to ride with you but at the last minute, move your chips to the answer you think is correct. Hopefully they had bet heavily and lose a bunch of their chips.

Strategy 3: Similar to strategy 2, if you are knowledgeable in a certain subject and the other players know that, purposely submit the wrong answer and, again, bet heavily on your answer to lure others in. Move your chips at the last minute.

Common Sense Strategy: Know how many chips each player has at the ending part of the game. If you are the chip leader and the (current) second place player cannot catch up with you even if he/she bet all their chips and won, do not risk your stack of chips. In other words, do not risk more than necessary (this is a GREAT lesson applicable in life as well).

Tip: Write your name on your (erasable) white board so players know who to return the boards to (the boards are color coded but names are easier to remember).

Tip: Use a count down timer that beeps instead of the sand timer that’s included in the game. Usually everyone is so involved in the game that no one watches the timer.

Tip: If you want to stir up a discussion on a particular subject or event, create your own (7) questions that are hard to guess exactly, but ones that the group might have some idea about. This is a sneaky way for the host to surface his/her agenda.

Wits & Wagers 2nd Edition appeals to people who like games that require knowledge, to people who like gambling, and to people who like the party/social type of games.

Bedroom Lighting Fixtures For Children And Adults

It does not matter how beautifully you have decorated a bedroom, or how much you have spent on furniture and accessories, not having the correct bedroom lighting fixtures can be a costly oversight and can also be inconvenient.

Most children do not like the dark, so incorporating some warm and low level lighting in a child's room is essential, place the lighting on a dimmer and there will be no startingling transition from bright to dark. Your child will sleep better and feel more secure. Dimmer switches on bedroom lighting fixtures is always a great idea, you can set the mood for a romantic evening, or adjust the lighting to suit someone who is in bed sick, or for someone who wants to stay in bed to read or study.

Of course, the kind of bedroom lighting fixtures will depend entirely on your décor. There are lots of fun fixtures for children's bedrooms, and fixtures especially for the student's bedroom.

If your children prefer to study in their bedrooms, make sure they have the correct lighting to work by. Someone who studies for hours may be sooner to getting heads because the lighting is wrong. The light reflects off computer screens and paper and can cause painful eyestrain.

Modern fixtures make use of low wattage and very efficient light bulbs, including xenon, fluorescent and low wattage halogen bulbs. These bulbs will last for years and consume very little power.

Little girls these days love pink, so choose bedroom lighting fixtures that include pink shades on the lights, add some pink bulbs and your daughter will love her new bedroom.

Little boys tend to like their action heroes, football and baseball stars. You can get just about any kind of sports-theme related bedroom lighting fixture to fit in with rest of his décor, and light fixtures are not difficult to hang.

In a nursery, lighting should definitely be on a dimmer. You will need plenty of light when you are feeding or changing a new baby, but at nap time and at night turning a dimmer down to low can provide a comforting light for baby and allow mom or dad to look in and check on the new family member.

Overhead bedroom lighting really is not necessary and if you are doing a total remodel you might consider adding some potlights or low wattage spots recessed into the ceiling. Two spots can be positioned over the bed, and are very useful if you both like to read before going to sleep. The potlights can also be put on a dimmer, and remote controls are available so you do not have to get out of bed to turn them off. This will free up space in your bedroom – no more lamps on the bedside tables – just more room for books!

Wall sconces also make lovely bedroom lighting fixtures and can give a room a totally different look. With a mixture of bedroom lighting fixtures, your room's lighting can be adjusted to look entirely different, depending on your mood.

How Can Lean Help My Organization? We Are Not a Manufacturer

Organizations such as hospitals, governments, educators, service providers, printers, event planners, and insurance companies ask. “How can Lean apply to my company?. I don’t make cars like Toyota.” But implementing Lean in these organizations provides value to the organization, its leaders, its employees, and its customers just as much as it applies value to manufacturing companies.

Differences in Organizations

It is true that these organizations do not have a production line producing a specified product or set of products. In fact, they can all list ways in which they are different. Consider a hospital, for example. Even if patients have the same illness as another patient, they present with their unique set of signs and symptoms. In the case of a printer, jobs may be similar but the layout, stock, and ink, as well as the specifications, are unique. For the event planner, every festival, celebration, or fundraiser has its own requirements and challenges. However, they all follow a process and each industry has process problems. The same Lean principles can apply. There may be adjustments to fit the industry, but the Lean tools can be used and the management processes implemented.

Value to Businesses

With the implementation of Lean processes and Lean management, these businesses can eliminate errors, rework or “do-overs”, reduce processing time, improve customer response time, workflow, and quality. When scheduled maintenance and quality assurance steps are taken, then quality and productivity actually improve and waste is reduced. When processes, or what is referred to as standard work documents are established, then you can identify areas of improvement and celebrate when target conditions are achieved.

Real World Examples

As an example, I can reference several cases of hospitals that have implemented Lean in testing areas and emergency rooms. The result has been improved patient care and satisfaction, as well as waste reduction. In the case of the ER, the staff was able to reduce the time to triage the arriving patients and to have the needed supplies at the right place. In the case of the testing area, waiting time and paperwork was reduced and both staff and customer satisfaction improved. There are so many examples of success in these industries. Government offices reduced cost and paperwork while improving citizen approval ratings. Printers reduced many costs, including waste and inventory while improving workflow. The result for them was increased business and growing profits.

The Challenges Along the Journey

But these successes were not without their challenges. The easiest part of getting started with Lean is learning the processes and how to complete the forms. The greatest challenge lies in creating and sustaining a Lean culture. The entire executive suite must be committed to LEAN and developing and sustaining a Lean culture. It takes commitment and discipline on the part of management, especially the middle management to stick to the lean processes. It requires bottom-up and top-down perspectives to have both the big picture and the details. It takes more than a superficial look to identify the areas in the end-to-end workflow that are not a value for which the customer is willing to pay.

It is so easy to fall back to old habits and to jump in and fight fires when something isn’t working. Old habits die hard, and like a phoenix, they rise again from the ashes. It takes discipline to follow the processes required to locate the source of the problem and fix it. It also takes discipline for them to create and follow the leader standard work guidelines. Visual controls and daily accountability help to extinguish old habits and instill new ones.

Visual controls are reminders and flags when the process is not followed. My doctor has his office at Johns Hopkins Hospital. On my last visit, I noticed visual checklists for some patient interactions. One of those was hand-washing before touching a patient. The hospital was conducting a project to reduce infections in the hospital. Their standard of work included this simple process. They were pleased with the improvement and posted charts in their areas regarding the improvement as a result of the campaign. The procedure is a part of everyone’s standard work at the hospital.

My partner John and I were recently working at a technology company to develop sales and customer materials. We were located next to the customer service hotline area. I noticed large screens displaying the status of the calls. The manager was pleased to show us how the calls were tracked and how often they were quickly and satisfactorily completed. He also explained the disciplines and processes they used to help them get to the source of the problem. Adhering to the processes for resolution allowed them to not only satisfy the customer issue but also notify engineering or field service to eliminate future issues. Disciplines, standards of work, and visual controls allow employees to work with pride and know they are providing quality products and services.

Resistance to Change

It takes effort to overcome resistance and reach the target conditions in these organizations. Much of the work done in an enterprise today is done on the computer or in a cubicle at a desk. It is difficult to observe the workflow and to time each activity. Also, many companies have sketchy guidelines and employees have developed their own way of doing things. Therefore, employees tend to resist accountability, standards of work, and the associated Lean paperwork. They often feel they are being micromanaged.

To overcome the resistance to change, management must demonstrate that the goal is to map the value stream and make the employee’s job easier. Executives and managers need to assure employees that they are not out to eliminate their job but rather to determine the challenges they face and the training they need. Lean can alleviate many of the problems that frustrate the employees every day. When they see that management takes action and eliminates these obstacles, job satisfaction improves, employees actively participate in problem resolution, and company goals are achieved.

Planning for Success

Because business processes exist in environments with cross-functional teams and may involve competing teams or projects, it is important to plan and implement parallel Lean processes and Lean management initiatives with executive governance and ultimate accountability. Senior management must establish the company vision and goals for the outcome of a Lean implementation. They also need to understand the value of executive Lean activities and how to be an active participant. Gemba walks and executive engagement will be a topic for another blog post. For now, it suffices to say that they must be engaged.

Many of the companies I have worked with have complex organizational structures and very different products or services, but the gains in productivity, performance, and satisfaction of employees and customers make Lean implementation worth the investment of time and effort. In summary, Lean is not just for manufacturing but for organizations of all types and structures.

Is Lean valuable to your organization? I challenge you to take a walk around your company. Ask people about their challenges and frustrations. Observe the activities and look for some of the following areas of opportunity: excess inventory, people traveling back and forth, back and forth to complete a task, out of stock conditions, clutter, unplanned downtime, safety risks, uneven workflow, volume of customer returns or level of customer care calls, and lack of organization of tools and supplies. Also, take note of the employee attitude and involvement in quality improvement. At this point, we are not identifying the vital few with which you would begin implementing Lean processes and management. We are just looking to determine, it is worth the effort to take the next step in the Lean journey. Once you make your list, sit back have a cup of coffee or tea and consider the value of process improvements and the transformation to a Lean culture. I’m sure you’ll agree, your organization can benefit from Lean.

Preparing For Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

Congratulations – you've finally decided to take the next step and proceed with cosmetic plastic surgery. While this is an exciting time for you, we understand that you may also have some anxiety about the coming weeks.

To ensure your cosmetic plastic surgery experience is a safe and smooth surgery and recovery period, we've put together a few tips and strategies. From today until the morning of your surgery, use these tips to maximize your experience through careful planning.

Start by evaluating the amount of time you will need for your cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, and the amount of time you will need for recovery. Plan your surgery at a time when you social commitments are low, and you can take some time off of work. The key to a successful recovery from a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure is to take the needed time away, and relax as much as possible. Stress will only add more time for recovery.

The amount of time needed for each cosmetic plastic surgery procedure is different. Make sure you speak with your doctor before hand to understand the time for recovery. Share with him the type of activities you do in your normal routine, and any upcoming events that you may be preparing for.

While most cosmetic surgery procedures will not require bed rest, you may wish to have a few family members or friends that are willing to help out for the first week or so. Even though you are electing to have a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, it is still real surgery, and you should plan accordingly.

Once you've decided on a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, you must also decide how you will pay for it. Will you be obtaining financing, or have you had time to save for the procedure?

While plastic surgery costs are usually not covered by your regular medical insurance, there are a number of ways you can pay for your chosen procedure. Check with your plastic surgery center. Most centers will be able to offer you a variety of ways to cover the plastic surgery costs.

In addition to the cost of the surgery, you should also plan for small incidental expenses. If you do not have adequate sick or vacation days stored at work, you may be required to take a few days without pay.

Being prepared will ensure your success with any cosmetic plastic surgery procedure you choose.

The New Hope for PC Patients – Celexa for Prostate Cancer

Be informed: Celexa, or its generic name Citalopram is a drug used to treat depression, being a mood elevator, a class of antidepressant called SSRI. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, or SSRI, works by increasing the quantity of a certain natural substance located in the brain.

Take note: Celexa is an anti-depression drug. If used outside that prescription, it is important to ask first medical judgment. Even then, it is still considered wise to get medical attention always.

The news is Celexa for prostate cancer. This antidepressant was found to treat hot flashes effectively in men undergoing hormonal therapy for prostate cancer. The October issue of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings (reference date October 11, 2004) had researchers report that:

The antidepressant (Celexa) is an effective medication that reduces the hot flashes of men who are undergoing hormone therapy for prostate cancer

The Paxil, or Paroxetine compound found in Celexa seems to be responsible for diminishing these hot flushes, the researchers have reported. During the duration of the 5 weeks of study, the 18 men who completed the therapy under close monitoring had illustrated hot flashes reduction from 6.2 to 2.5 per day. These hot flash scores, and the frequency multiplied by the severity, reduced in the same period from 10.6 to 3 per day.

So what does this mean? It means that the new label antidepressant drugs, like Celexa could have the next answer for prostate cancer problems. Treating Celexa for prostate cancer could be a viable option.

An older and more common treatment for hot flushes in prostate cancer patients was Megace, generic name Megestrol Acetate. It is a female hormone progesterone derivative, a progestogen. When prostate cancer patients are treated with hormonal therapy, Megace is employed and most of the times used in conjunction with Lupron or Zoladex which produces surprisingly effective results of 90% reduction of hot flushes. But there had been isolated reports that the cancer had progressed while having Megace treatment, and it was found out that Megace could have an opposite progression of the disease on some patients.

Try suggesting the Celexa for prostate problems to your physician. Celexa for prostate could be your only hope in defeating cancer. But never self-administrator drugs such as Celexa (or any of those mentioned) for any reason, always seek professional help. There are dozens of things you need to know and must check before you begin using Celexa for prostate cancer treatment.

Weight Lifting Workout & Muscle Building Tips

Here are a few inspirational tips for those who dream to become like A.Swarzeneger one day:

Tip # 1: Be cool and active.

keep your mind open. Do not be shelfish. Ask for others opinions, ask questions and be eager to learn more and more
about weight lifting. Scan the web, read magazines and books for more information. Visit the local gym to get some
ideas or some inspiration and motivation from others. when you are training do not allow interruptions
in the flow of exercise from start to finish. Do not rush or hurry. A hurried attitude will cause stress and
anxiety and will make you nervous. As a result your overall performance will decrease.

Tip # 2: Follow a schedule.

Prepare a program and include every weight lifting or other exercise you will practice. Spent equal time every
day for your training. Count the hours you spend every month and stick to your schedule. Do not go too
far. Practice one or two exercises for every body part and try to build all your muscles. Chest, back, biceps,
shoulders, triceps, legs etc.

Tip # 3: Stay focused and committed.

You know its importand to have the right mindset when you workout. Your mental mechanism will support you if
you are focused and determined to succeed. Set a goal, make a promise to yourself, that's vital. Try to keep
your promise. Do not let your training become a boring procedure that has to be done! Be consistent and patient.
Work hard, sense the burn and you will be rewarded.

Tip # 4: Be enthusiastic.

Every exercise you practice is unique and must be treated as unique. That means You have to be centered and
show some entousiasm. Your mood, your job or daily activities play an importand role when
you do your weight lifting workout. Do not let tension and stress follow you and haunt you. Do some mental
work before training and try to put bad feelings or thoughts in the closet! Bad feelings = negative energy =
negative results.

Tip # 5: Be realistic.

When you set your goals you have to be realistic in order to enjoy every weight lifting workout. If you aim
too high you will be disappointed. Start learning your body's behavior and set realistic goals. Put
too much effort and you will ever burnout. If you expect to look like A.Swarzeneger with two months of muscle building
training then you're fooling yourself.

In weight lifting and muscle building you are always alone but at the same time you're together with all the
people out there training and exercising. There's nothing you're going through that everyone who works out
have not gone through at one time or together.

A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

There’s no denying that there are many negative forces at work in today’s society. We have battles in court, battles on soil belonging to neighboring countries’, gang warfare, crazy people walking into local fast food joints and randomly spraying machine gun fire, police brutality, overpopulation, starving people, AIDS, cancer, pollution, dwindling resources, abusive and neglectful families, so many people caught up in material priorities, drugged from crack to Valium, from Ritalin to Prozac. We have destructive emotions like selfishness, fear, misery, envy, depression, jealousy, distrust, hate, racism, and anger. Just thinking about all the negative influences surrounding us is depressing. Pass the Prozac, please. It’s easy to overlook the existence of positive elements in our society. We need to know both extremes in order to have something by which to base our standards. There needs to be a balance. The Yin and the Yang must co-exist. This is not to say that the scales cannot tip toward one side or the other, and in a world where the scales seem to be tipping towards the bad side, who wouldn’t want to add a little weight to the good?

There have been and continue to be visionaries among us. The definition of Utopian is “ideal, but impractical”. The Utopia in A Brave New World boasted physical comfort and “happiness” ensured by genetic manipulation and postnatal conditioning. The inhabitants of this new world were essentially slaves, bound not by literal chains, but by mental ones.

On the subject of happiness John says to Bernard, ” Well, I’d rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness you were having here”. The happiness of the new world was not true happiness since it was conditioned. Just as one who has been hypnotized to walk around clucking like a chicken may think he is a chicken, he is not actually a chicken. Similarly, a woman regularly abused by her partner, being told that she is “worthless” and “stupid” eventually comes to believe it, whether it’s true or not. One who is told he is happy often enough to believe it is not actually happy, he has just been brainwashed into believing so.

Based on his research, Abraham Maslow, a Philosopher of Humanistic Psychology, formed the theory of “self-actualization”. He found that in order to obtain happiness, we must first satisfy the “needs” on the lower rungs of the ladder in order to progress up the ladder to the top.

Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” in ascending order: 1) Physiological needs (hunger, thirst, shelter, rest) 2) Safety needs (protected from illness, elements) 3) Love (receiving and giving love, affection, trust, acceptance, family, friends) 4) Esteem needs (esteem, respect of others and self) 5) Cognitive needs (knowledge, understanding, curiosity) 6) Aesthetic needs (art, nature, balance, order) 7) Self actualizing (successful development and use of personal talents and abilities).

In accordance with Maslow’s theory, Brave New Worlder’s don’t have the potential to be happy. They couldn’t progress much past the 2nd rung of the ladder. Love was denied to them due to the “appalling dangers of family life”. Their cognitive needs were not fulfilled. They could be brainwashed, but not actually learn anything. The example given was of the little boy who could recall from his sleep teaching the statement about the Nile river being the longest in Africa, but not knowing which river in Africa was the longest. They did not have independent thought. In fact, they did not have most of Maslow’s characteristics of psychologically healthy people: “an objective perception of reality, independence, need for privacy, empathy, resistance to conformity, democratic characteristics, or the keenness to be creative”.

Today’s society is slowly but surely creeping towards being more and more controlled. Big business and Government are two powerful forces united, driven by money and power. We’re still giving fingerprints as a form of ID; will DNA be next? Our spending is monitored. We have credit and debit cards; even our paper money contains a metallic strip, for tracking. We are constantly being watched by cameras on every street corner, the highway, the park, work, shopping. Animals’ whereabouts are tracked by microchips that have been implanted in their bodies. Are we next? How about cloning?

Like the “orgie porgies”, “feelies” and “soma”, we’re being given distractions to divert our attention from realities such as these. To keep independent thought at bay, Ritalin, Prozac, TV “news”, soap operas, talk shows, and the internet are given to us. Advertising is stuffed down our throats. Catchy tunes reminding us how much we need this or that. The power of suggestion is strong. Mass production needs mass consumption. In A Brave New World the statements “Ending is better than mending”, “I love new clothes..”, “The more stitches, the less riches” were drilled into heads. Another form of distraction in A Brave New World was the constant groups of people, of strangers. This is similar to our city life. Masses of people lose individually, making them easier to lead. Churches have known this throughout history.

In A Brave New World, the Controller spoke to John of their nine year war and of how the masses were “ready to have even their appetites controlled then. Anything for a quiet life”. Are we heading toward a new society? A society slowly and methodically being reformed to better serve the needs of someone in a position of power? Will we soon be willing to give up our freedoms in exchange for physical safety as in the Brave New World?

Top Ten Reasons to Repaint Your Commercial Building

Number 10: Regulatory Concerns

Meeting regulations is one of the most basic reasons for repainting a building.

Number 9: Safety Concerns

Safety concerns are another basic reason for repainting a commercial building. Repainting signs and markings in the parking area keeps traffic flowing smoothly and safely, and helps insure a pleasant shopping experience.

Number 8: Corporate Changes

Taking a business into a new direction may require you to alter the appearance of your facilities. Repainting the interior and exterior of a commercial building is a fast way to reinvent a business and face the challenges of the future.

Number 7: Historical Restoration

Older buildings have a history that may be beneficial to your business. Repainting your building in authentic historical colors may help you integrate your business with a municipal historic district, and may invite a new clientele.

Number 6: Creating an Identity

If you have recently acquired a new commercial building, repainting the structure is the clearest signal that you can send to potential customers that the building is under new management.

Number 5: In Place of Replacement

Compared to replacement of materials, painting your commercial building is very cost effective, and can help you stretch a facility budget to met other challenges and keep your building looking its best for workers and visitors.

Number 4: Faded Glory

You may need to repaint your commercial building when colors start to fade or discolor. Although exterior building paints are crafted for long-life, ultraviolet light breaks down the coating’s structure and causes the color to fade or change over time. Repainting your commercial building gives the structure a facelift and presents a clean and fresh aspect to visitors.

Number 3: Add Value

To prop up the building’s value with minimum expense. In addition to being cheaper than material replacement, repainting a commercial building helps improve the value of your facility.

Number 2: Early Paint Failure

Suffering from paint failure? It is definitely time to repaint your commercial building. Paint failure is the painting industry’s term for cracking, peeling and other issues that arise with coatings. Generally poor surface preparation lies behind most paint failure, although some paint failure is due to using cheap or improperly mixed paints. Using the wrong type of paint for a given surface can also lead to paint failure.

Number One Reason to Repaint Your Commercial Building: Customer Perception

If your visitors and guests are asking about the last time you repainted your commercial building, your facility is overdue for a new paint job. Customers notice the condition of your building first, but are not likely to say anything out loud. If they do say something about the appearance of your building, listen carefully. What they have to say could change your business. Your potential customers may look elsewhere after seeing your dilapidated exterior. Your aesthetic appearance may not necessarily represent your company’s abilities, but that’s how your customers will likely interpret them. Customers do judge a book by it’s cover!

The Many Benefits of Bamboo Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are a very important feature in the kitchen. Not only are they utilitarian because they hold food and dishes, but they are also the first thing someone sees when they walk in the kitchen. The cabinets provide the overall aesthetic of the kitchen, the busiest room in the home. Installing bamboo kitchen cabinets provide a great look and provide many benefits.

Bamboo is a very eco-friendly material that is growing in popularity as a choice for general furniture. It is also a premier choice for kitchen accessories, such as cutting boards and utensil holders. It makes sense that bamboo is now becoming a preferred choice for kitchen cabinets as well.

Bamboo is preferred above other common cabinet materials, such as laminates, plywood, and particle board. Bamboo is harder than wood, providing kitchen cabinets with more longevity. The material is so strong and durable that it does not shrink or swell under changing weather conditions.

The material is very eco-friendly because bamboo does not exhume any toxic materials that are harmful for health. They are also great for unique cottage houses that feature outdoor kitchens. Bamboo is useful in these kinds of kitchens because of the ability to undergo any kind of changes or conditions when kept out in the open.

Bamboo is becoming more popular because it is highly renewable and sustainable. Bamboo has the ability to grow and mature within seven years, but often sooner than that. This is unlike wood takes decades to be harvested for lumber.

No matter what color the kitchen is, bamboo will blend in perfectly to the decorating scheme. It gives off an elegant and modern look and enhances the decor without accessorizing it. The style is natural and much preferred to other styles of cabinets, so much so that people are furnishing their entire homes with more bamboo products.

Bamboo cabinets are simple to install because the material is very light to carry. There is no need to screw the cabinets into the wall; they only need to be hung up in the correct hooking system. Bamboo is also very easy to maintain.

The material does not require chemicals for cleaning the cabinets. All it needs it water and mild detergent. In order to increase the eco-friendly benefits of bamboo, use green detergents that have no added chemicals that are bad for health. There is no need to remove the entire kitchen cabinet to clean it, either.

Even with all of these benefits, bamboo is not an expensive option for cabinets. It is competitively priced with plywood and particle board depending on the quality of the bamboo. Laminated bamboo plywood is the least expensive option, but it is better to get the best quality bamboo that is 100 percent real.

It is important to pay attention to the quality of the bamboo and select the better bamboo types. The look of bamboo will differ depending on where it was imported from and the quality. Color ranges from dark shades of brown to yellow. Pay special attention to the kind of adhesive that was used for pasting. It is better to choose cabinets whose adhesive have little or no formaldehyde.

Bamboo stalks are sliced into strips and then laminated together to form boards and planks. The way the strips are oriented determines the grain orientation. A vertical grain means the edges of the strips form the outer surface of the panel. Vertical grain has an appearance like wood grain.

Horizontal grain means the bamboo strips are laminated together on the edges with the surface made of the wider faces. Horizontal grain shows off the characteristic knuckle typical of bamboo stalks. This is a very natural and appealing feature for any rustic style of kitchens.

Sewer Odor Experts for Roof Top Sewer Vent Stack Filters

Every state, city, and village either has odor ordinances or treats obnoxious odors perceptible beyond property lines as public disturbances/nuisance. All plumbing vent stacks produce odors unless they fitted with a filter. OSHA warns that levels of 300-ppm (H2S) cause the olfactory nerve to lose sensitivity. At first a “rotten egg” odor is detected but on the second or third breath the odor is no longer noticed. All major odor problems have associated fines or other penalties.

When you are experiencing sewer or septic smells inside a home or business not near a plumbing fixture these odors are most likely coming from your sewer vent stacks on your roof. All plumbing vent stacks produce odors including that “rotten egg” smell caused by hydrogen sulfide gas unless they are fitted with a filter. One of the most common problems is the sewer gas (H2S) is drawn into the fresh air intakes on the roof from the air conditioning systems. On roofs industrial buildings code also require fresh air intake for building air balance against all the stale air exhausted through roof vents. The potential problem can be identified through basic smell of odor when on the roof or around the perimeter of the building as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas is heavier than air and thus falls to “nose level” quickly when the wind blows just right. A professional can use a H2S measuring device to detect and measure sewer gas concentration being omitted from specific roof vent stacks. The vents omitting gas is a natural occurrence on most homes and buildings because that’s the way they are designed.

Raising roof vent stacks does not solve the problem it only displaces it on a windy day to blow over the exterior wall to open windows, the patio, the fireplace, the garden, pool area, sidewalk, front door, driveway, or parking lot. On a non-wind day sewer gas is heavier than air and will settle on roof and cause intermittent sewer odors in the home or building.

Installing a One way valve on the sewer stacks will reduce the sewer gas that vents to the roof through the opening and closing of the valve. The Mechanical Engineers design the sewer venting system for it to be a sealed system in the home or business but unrestricted venting to the atmosphere. This type of system defeats the original design intent for all building designs. The system operates on demand of actions in the home or business such as the flush of a toilet or turning on a sink. Since this type of system is capping the vent stacks, it is pressurizing the sewer system in the home or business. It is creating more of a potential for sewer gas odor problems. Any type of bad plumbing seals or gaskets that that may have a small leak will cause the problem to intensify. The vent is now mechanically opened and closed by a valve. It can fail in open position too. This introduces sewer gas to the roof, when it fails.

Charcoal vent stack filters on the sewer stacks is one odor filters on the market but is less effective when introduced to moisture which causes it to solidify or cake up. Sewer gas from the vent stacks is extremely high with moisture since the systems primary function is to drain water in a sealed system underground away from the building. In my opinion this product is not the right product for this application.

I recommend for homes odor eliminator vent stack filters that use Zeocarbon. Zeocarbon is a mixture of carbon and zeolite rock, which has been independently demonstrated to work up to 7 times longer than regular carbon alone. Vent stack filters using this technology are unique in that they actually regenerate themselves for up to 5 years. These systems use sunlight. The exterior, interior, and zeocarbon replaceable bags themselves are impregnated with titanium dioxide (approximately the same quantity and type in most popular toothpastes on the market). When exposed to direct sunlight the titanium dioxide produces ozone, which directly destroys odors and regenerates the zeocarbon. When combined with “no flow periods” common to most households, this design allow us to operate up to 5 years without refilling the units. Many units completely block any regenerative UV sunlight though the use of opaque rain caps and guards that promote the development of odor producing bacteria. However because the zeocarbon can only absorb so much gas, this type filter is designed with a low cost, easily replaceable insert bags. Another good thing on this type filter is the restriction on the airflow is so slight (it has a pressure differential measured at only 1.5″ w.g./ft@50 fpm) that it does not interfere with normal venting of the plumbing system. This type filter is made with animal resistant self-cleaning screens coupled with the frost proof insulating solar heat absorption design characteristics, protects the vent stack from plugging in all seasons.

The zeocarbon filter not only traps sewer gases at the roof vent, so they cannot escape into the air at all, but it also means less air pollution from GREENHOUSE GASES. It particularly traps ammonia, carbon dioxide (global warming) and hydrogen sulfide (the rotten-egg smelling gas), which the filter traps on an 18-24% wt/wt basis, and used zeocarbon acts as an excellent source of nitrogen when mixed with soil. Even though the filter is installed directly on the vent pipe, it’s frost proof design is such that it not only does not impede air being drawn into the vent, it prevent hoar frost plugging and keeps out insects and critters. This filter is also for vents that are directly connected to aerated or non aerated septic tanks, septic mounds, drain fields, landfill vents, compost vents, etc. In many instances, city-sewer connections bring gas into the home’s plumbing vents which vent the gases out the roof vent and often down into the back yard where they can be drawn into the home. This type filter has proven beneficial in those cases too!

I recommend for mobile homes, restaurants, daycare centers, nursing homes, and schools, odor eliminator vent stack filters that filter the harmful sewer odors by oxidation. Oxidation is accomplished with chlorine dioxide technology. Because chlorine dioxide reacts selectively and primarily with only the most offensive odor producing compounds (hydrogen sulfide, organic sulfurs, organic amines) the Odor Eliminators will normally provide a much longer service life than products such as activated carbon. With a properly designed filter that allows the original design of the system plumbing system to function does not pressurize the lines like some of the other products on the market. Moisture does not have a negative effect on the Eliminator therefore unwanted reactions do not occur and power is not needlessly spent allowing chlorine dioxide to be available and ready on demand. The result is safe, extremely effective, broad-spectrum malodor control. Chlorine dioxide remains available and ready on demand.

Polishing is accomplished with technology that protects against the escape of malodors can not be oxidized. It incorporates polymeric adsorption and electrostatic bonding technologies. Polishing and oxidizing are accomplished simultaneously. The result is safe (utilizing the same material approved for food storage by the USDA), extremely effective, broad-spectrum malodor control. (Request Form No. 502 from USDA for more detailed information.)

After you have installed roof stack vent filters, inside odors are most likely coming from leaking wax seals or gaskets on your plumbing fixtures. In this case the odor is concentrated typically in an isolated area, the bathrooms. It can be intermittent due to several building mechanical system designs. Bathroom fixtures have a p-trap built-in the fixture so if the fixture becomes loose from the floor or the wall the wax seal or gasket can leak. This type of leak will allow sewer gas to leak directly into the room. Most bathrooms have an exhaust fan which intensifies the introduction of the gas into the room by pulling the gas from the source, the leaking seal at the floor moving it to the ceiling exhaust vent prior to exhausting the gas from the space. This condition is detected through smell or a professional can use a H2S measuring device to detect and measure sewer gas concentration. The remedy for this problem is to replace the bad fixture seals. Contact your preventive maintenance group or to arrange for a local technician help with this problem.

Bathroom odors can also be traced to urine absorption into the tile or tile grout.

Many businesses try to mask the odor by installing a deodorizer mister in the bathroom to spray a scented to product to mask the odors in bathrooms. With proper maintenance of fixtures in the bathrooms and the correct initial designed systems operating correctly this problem should be eliminated. If this condition is corrected overtime it can worsen and affect other parts of the business.

Odor and constant smell can be due to the build up of urine saturating tile grout around urinals and tile grout. There are spray products that eliminates this problem by using it in a regular maintenance program.

When you have floor sinks, drains and floor / wall clean outs dry of water especially in basements of homes and businesses in the production or mechanical areas you will often detect an offensive odor. A dried out p-trap allows the sewer system to vent freely into the space. In the case of a restaurant or any building with an exhaust system that may be in a negative air balance the problem is intensified. The exhaust system can draw the sewer gas into the facility. The affect on an isolated area is not uncommon or if it is near a return on the HVAC system circulate it through out the building. The most efficient way to identify if you have this problem is to do a smoke test on the sewer system. Prior to doing the smoke test we would first recommend verifying all floor sinks and drains have water in the p-traps. This would include the units in isolated rooms such as the mechanical areas and the units installed behind or under equipment. The wall clean outs can be visually inspected but are difficult to detect leakage without a H2S meter or a smoke test. The dried out p-trap when identified can be fixed by adding water to fill the p-trap. Contact your preventive maintenance group to help with this problem.

To fix floor drains and floor sinks add water to the traps on a regular basis or add a trap primer to the system.

To fix floor and wall clean outs check for bad seals in a random fashion. Replace where worn.
