3 Tips to Transforming Your Room With Color

With these painting tips you can transform a room with color and accomplish it in a week.

Let color be your friend, do not fight it, but embrace color and use your imagination.

You may decide to paint just one accent wall or maybe the trim. Try painting the ceiling with some color it will make the room feel totally different.

1. Paint is very economic you can change the mood of a room by just by changing the color. Most rooms can be painted with 2 gallons or less. Paint is one of the cheapest way to transform a room from dull to elegant.

2. 50 Shades of gray more or less. Gray is very in and can vary how a room looks by what shade you use and where you decide to use it. Gray can vary from blue to green to brown. You can use your choice on the ceiling or all the walls or maybe just an accent wall. I would suggest getting a sample of your choice and painting a spot on the wall so you can see how this looks different times of the day. You could paint a piece of thin plywood or poster board different colors that you are favorite and hang them on the wall to see how the light at different times of the day affects them. One trick would be to paint in different shades of the same gray using dark on one wall with a lighter shade on the other.

3. Painting does not require a lot of tools or equipment to get started, You will need an angled brush for cutting in the edges, a roller, roller head, and a pole would be nice so you can reach to the ceiling. Also needed is a tray and a step ladder. Some tape and something to cover the floor. You should be able to complete your project in a weekend. Take your time and tape the trim and cover the floor and furniture with plastic. You can do the cutting in first or last just make sure you do not the painted area dry completely before finishing. It is always best to cut in when the paint is still damp.

Use your imagination and change the mood of the room to your taste. If you lack imagination for color look on the web for inspiration, ask a friend, or hire a designer.

Do not be afraid of color!

Tips for DIY Tree Removal

Tree removal can be very dangerous and even life-threatening. It is never recommended to remove a tree on your own unless it is a small one that you are confident you can handle safely. Otherwise, tree removal should be left in the hands of professionally-trained and equipped tree service contractors. If you have a tree on your property that is fairly small, but needs to be removed, you can possible do it yourself with the right tools, knowledge, and planning.

Tree Removal Preparation

Proper preparation for small tree removal involves gathering all your needed supplies, as well as, a comprehensive inspection of the tree. Look to see if the tree leans one way or the other, and plan an escape route in case it does not fall the way you expect it to fall. Also, examine whether or not there are any obstacles in any direction of the tree, including vehicles, structures, and other trees. If you are sure there is enough safe clearance for the tree to fall, then you can move on to gathering your equipment and tools. This includes:

  • Safety Gear (Utility gloves, goggles, hard hat, steel toe boots, etc.)
  • Chainsaw
  • Ax or Hacksaw
  • Ladder
  • Rope
  • Wedges
  • First Aid Kit

To Remove a Tree

Once you have all your equipment and supplies, you can get started removing the tree. First, use your ax to knock on the bark a few times, and in a few different places, to learn how solid or hollow the tree is. Finding a less dense area to cut will be easier. Next, plan which side of the tree you want to make your cut. Look to see where the tree naturally leans; it is better to cut a tree in the direction in which it wants to naturally fall. Be sure the area where the tree drops is level so the tree does not roll or bounce after it falls.

Make a horizontal cut at hip-height, and about 1/3rd into the tree. Do this on the side of the tree where you want it to fall. If you want the tree to fall to the right, you must make you cut on the same side so it falls inward, towards the cut. The tree will fall perpendicular to your horizontal cut. Your second cut should create a wedge into the tree. So make the second cut at an angle from the initial cut. It should look like a lemon wedge.

Your third cut is called a back cut, and is should be made on the opposite side of your wedge cut. This cut will make the tree fall over on the side of your wedge cut. Make it about 1.5 inches above the wedge cut, and as thick as possible. You can also use a wedge to prevent the tree from settling onto the chainsaw. Add more wedges as necessary until the tree begins to fall. Then run! But do not turn your back on the tree as it falls.

Visiting Nidhivan at Vrindavan: A Love Cohort

I see them at a mountain. I meet them along the beach and I enjoy with them at night safaris. Images of these adventurous people, who travel to various corners of India, constantly flit through my mind. But, here I am not discussing any of these. I am not even off to Kerala to witness the backwaters, or breathtaking Sikkim or a zillion other destinations. I am at a place, which is about 130 kilometers from New Delhi.

In a land of over 4,000 temples devoted to Lord Krishna nothing prepared me for this wondrous one that our rickshaw, which is a 3-wheeled transport took us to. This temple is at Vrindavan, the place where the heart of Lord Krishna resides.

Narrow lanes, open drains, unruly traffic was a humble sight. All along the stretch we saw shops adorned with colorful attires to decorate the deity. There were crowns, swings, flutes, and other musical instruments which were synonymous to this God. Here, cows were the kings and monkeys wheeled, reeled, and frolicked. There was a live sense of Radha (Lord Krishna’s friend) in every single grain of the soil. Had I not attended a wedding here, this town would not have appeared in my travel itinerary. The mystic love of Radha-Krishna soaks you when you visit this town. What comes alive when you are dead drowned in love is an indescribable union of two intimate souls; the ardor was palpable in every grain of soil here.

Those in love must visit this temple to feel the sublime tranquility of their love. As our vehicle took us to winding roads, these periodic chants wafted toward me. Seated in it, a smile adorned my lips when from all over and around the same chant Radhe-Radhe knocked my ears. The vehicle drivers steered cleared their vehicle amicably through a dense crowd, all along mouthing the same chant. Through the alleys meandering like the river itself it was like a breathtaking drama that only this place could create. It is on these roads that many a story about this immortal love was woven.

I am at Nidhivan now. It is also known as Madhuvan. If you have in your imagination a temple building with ornate pillars, ostentatious God’s pictures, plush flooring then it is not this temple. It is beautifully different! I would quote it as a forest temple with plants and trees, which makes it unique. It has an amazingly beautiful and peaceful environment where you can feel the love and peace within. It is one with its own uniqueness and the first of its kind I have ever experienced!

As we entered the gate we met this guide. As he took us down the trees I thought there would be a temple somewhere inside, but soon I realized that this forest cover of whooping Sixteen Thousand One Hundred and Eight trees was the temple, and one of the most significant and popular temples of this town! What one felt and what transpired was beyond description. There were many such trees showered with red vermilion interspersed in the pathways. They prohibited touching it or applying it on trees unless you went for a prayer ritual.

This temple is full of divine energy. The trees were all bent towards the ground as if showed reverence and respect to the Lord. The forest cover with beautiful thick shrubs was densely populated with leaves. One sees a main trunk and along with it innumerable strong branches in serpentine fashion with leaves in abundance. The constant growth of secondary shoots and a host of tertiary branches together formed an amalgamated complex branch system that if you wanted to trace the branches you would end up in vain. These trees were two types. The ones with small white flowers were Gopis (the generic name for Radha’s friends) and those without it depicted Krishna.

The devotees who visited this temple have the belief that Krishna still appears there in the night. The legend has it that at night all these flowering trees converted them into living beings and danced around Krishna. It is a spiritually blessed temple where spontaneous overflow of devotion flows every time. This is the only place which makes you imagine how this town looked like Five Hundred years ago as the area is left untouched and kept in the same natural way. They have not cut down the trees. A group of devotees looked after these sacred trees.

Swami Haridasa, said to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna’s friend Lalita was a divine saint who sat in the periphery of this forest garden and spent his life in His devotion composing and singing songs in His praise. He stayed away from worldly pleasures and left his village to a secluded spot in a dense forest years ago. This, which is now known as Nidhivan. As a result of his spiritual aspirations and hard penance, the Lord not only came in his dream, but also appeared here in person.

Traversing the serpentine pathways we went to various spots within the temple. About 20 steps down a narrow staircase, we saw a sacred well created by the Lord Himself, with the help of his flute to relieve the thirst of his friend Vishakha. Hence, it is known as Vishakha-Kund. There was a bed for the divine couple to rest and a room where the Lord decorated his beloved before a dance performance.

This temple lived with a mysterious concept. They believed that after the sacred process of vespers at 8 P.M. no one stayed in its premises. In case anyone did, he/she either died or was too ill to utter a word!

What I heard and saw at this love temple is something which I have never probably felt in any other temple and this alone made me so curious to pen.

Construction Site Management – Accessibility

Construction sites offer different challenges as far as accessibility is concerned. This follows the fact that there is a mass movement of men (labour) as well as material haulers. These range from pick up trucks to trailers. Depending on the items being moved, the weight is different and as such the capability of the route to and from site should match these requirements. There will also be visitors in light personal vehicles, especially consultants and prospective property buyers in case of commercial projects or prospective tenants in case of residential or other rental spaces. The available or provided access should well cater for these requirements as far as is possible. The different site conditions include;

· Virgin sites: This refers to a new site where no other construction activity has been done before. This means that there is no access to the specific point of construction. Where such route may be available, it may not be sufficient and might need improvement. This may include works like cutting down trees, cutting high sections and filling low ones, dumping murram or other appropriate material. It will also include compaction, wetting and curing of the dumped material. Being a new and sometimes temporary route, it will need maintenance. Where such access is to pass through other people’s property, appropriate permissions should be sought. The local authorities must also be notified and provided with plans like ways of averting problems like ecological disturbance. It is usually wise to have the access route for construction being also the permanent access to the permanent route for accessing the completed facility.

· Existing sites: These are sites that have already been built upon previously. They may have existing access. The only hurdle would be where such access is still in use by others, as it will create an inconvenience and delivery use might be regulated to low peak periods only. There could also arise the need to provide alternative routes for the existing users. A good example here is road maintenance or improvement works, whereby diversions are created and maintained in good order during the construction period. Appropriate arrangements should be made to minimize inconvenience as well as prevent accidents.

· Tight Sites: These are unique sites in the fact that they have minimal space for maneuverability. Examples here are found in town centers or institutions. Regulation here is very strict and as such stringent measures should be put in place to follow such regulations. These sites are very difficult to manage as far as accessibility is concerned. An example is where concrete is to be delivered on site already mixed (In premix trucks). This presents the headache of timing as well as preventing inconvenience to other users.

The provision of access to sites should be a well thought out activity. Maintenance should be in top priority. The design of such access roads should also cater for the traffic envisaged for the said project. Road signage and other such furniture should be also be provided and well maintained.

12 Clues For Guessing Who’s Who in the Bible – A Fun Bible Activity For Sunday School

The Bible is filled with amazing people. Elijah, Joseph, Peter, Paul…the list is long and worth knowing. It’s important that our kids know about all the people in the Bible as well.

Here’s a fun Bible activity your kids will enjoy that will get them guessing about specific people in the Bible. Just follow the directions and have fun!

Here’s what you do: Write the following 12 clues onto index cards or colorful poster board. You might want to laminate them for long-term use.

1. Is the Bible character a man, woman, girl or boy?

2. Is (he) in the Old Testament or the New Testament?

3. Tell me at least one thing about his family.

4. Tell me 2 good things about this person.

5. Tell me 2 not so good things about this person.

6. Tell me how (his) story should draw me closer to God.

7. Tell me one important object used by this person.

8. Tell me the name of at least one other person who knew (him).

9. Did any miracles take place around this person and if so, describe one.

10. Tell me at least one emotion this person would have strongly felt.

11. Give me at least one detail about where (he) is from.

12. Give me at least one detail about (his) job.

Now number each card, on the back, 1 through 12. Display the cards on a table or pocket chart, number side showing. Finally, decide upon a Bible character that you and your children have studied in the past. This is the person the children will try to guess. You are now ready to play the game.

This game can be played between 2 teams or you can just simply play it until one child in the class guesses the Bible character. In either case, have a child pick a number card. Read the clue on the card. You, the teacher, must then respond to the clue that was given. The child then has 10 to 30 seconds to make a guess as to the Bible character. Have the children continue to pick the clue cards until a child or team makes a correct guess. Enjoy!

Roofing Shingles and Tiles – 3 Basic Types

Roofing shingles come in many different styles, shapes, colors and patterns. But every roof has but three basic shingle (or tile) types. This article explains the three basic types of shingles and tiles which are produced. We’re not talking about specific products here, simply the types of each product.

Starters Shingles and Starter Tiles

Starter shingles are, as their name implies, the starting shingles of a Roof System. They are installed on top of the Drip Edge/Rake Edge and on top of the Leak Barriers and begin the overlapping pattern for the remainder of Shingles (or tiles) on the roof. Simply put: One single row of starter shingles is installed everywhere your roof ends, ie: in the same areas as with Metal Drip Edge and Rake Edge.

As with every other part of a Roof System, different types of starter shingles are offered by many different manufacturers. Fortunately for you, you don’t need to select what type of starter shingle to use on your roof, because the manufacturer of the Field Shingle you chose chooses for you. As long as your Roofing Contractor follows the manufacturers recommendations when selecting starter shingles, you’re in good hands.

A note of interest: starter shingles set the beginning pace for the rest of the Shingles on your roof. If the starter shingles are installed straight, then the installation technician will be off to a good start. Also, starter shingles usually need to be installed off set from the remaining Shingles on your Roof System to allow for a proper overlap of the remaining shingles or tiles.

Another easy aspect for you about starter shingles is some manufacturers produce starter shingles which can be used with the Field Shingles of their competitors. In other words, some starter shingles are interchangeable with the products of different manufacturers. Not all starter shingles however are interchangeable. To avoid any ‘unpleasantness’, double check with your roofing contractor that they will be installing a proper starter shingle.

Field Shingles and Field Tiles

Shingles, or “field” Shingles are the main component of your Roof System. It’s the part you see first when looking from the street. And it’s the part which primarily keeps the weather out of your home. Many differing types of shingles are available to choose from, ranging between the traditional Asphalt, Wood Shake and Slate/Tile, to the relatively newer Metal, Rubber and environmentally friendly Plastic Types. Manufacturers are even experimenting with new Green Roof Systems which do not have shingles at all but are instead composed of real dirt and vegetation!

Dry climates generally reduce the effectiveness of Wood Shingles in Calgary and Concrete Tiles are relatively expensive and require a very specific “taste” of design appeal. Rubber and Plastic tiles are relatively newer in the market and still gaining market share. It’s true also that many home owners are resistant to installing metal on their roof, although metal roof systems are quite true to their promise of reliability and curb appeal. This leaves Asphalt shingles as the most popular tile and shingle option for Roofing Systems, with asphalt being the most popular due to its lower cost and long reliable track record.

Asphalt and Metal Shingles have recently adapted in design to match the luxurious ‘layered’ look that Wood Shingles used to offer. Recent advances in technology have allowed more and more Asphalt and Metal shingle designs. Field shingles are installed overtop the Starter Shingles we just discussed. They take the brunt of the weather and are the ‘meat and potatoes’ a Roof System.

Without good Field Shingles, your roof doesn’t stand a chance. Of course, all components of a Roof System are vitally important, however it’s the Field Shingles which are the most visual, the most costly and receive the most attention on your Roof.

Ridge Cap Shingles and Ridge Cap Tiles

The final touch. Ridge Shingles are to your roof like a picture frame is to a picture. What kind of frame did they put around the Mona Lisa in the Louvre? I’ll bet you it wasn’t purchased at Wal-Mart… And what a difference it makes to have a good quality ridge shingle installed. The bottom line is, visually appealing Roof Systems include visually appealing ridge shingles.

If you are not concerned with the visual appeal of your Roof System, then save a buck and use a standard cut shingle for your ridge caps. If however you’d like your house to look more like your castle…use a definitive edge ridge shingle such as an IKO Ultra Hip or a GAF/Elk z-ridge. The price difference between a regular ridge shingle and a more visually appealing ridge shingle on a standard home is around $400 – $800.

Important note: Higher quality ridge shingles typically require special installation procedures when installed. It may be wise to mention this to whoever you choose to install your roof. Ridge shingles are located at areas of your roof most vulnerable to wind damage and therefore subject blowing off if they are not installed properly. Ask your roofing contractor what sort of Special Installations are required for installing high quality ridge shingles.

Strategies To Improve on Targeted Website Traffic – Part 1

For each and every automobile there are shifting components that make it functioning. Web site visitors are no different. There are techniques to it or resources that make creating visitors efficient and achievable.

In this section we will:

1. Determine the most frequent and most powerful traffic generating resources

2. Supply good examples of how every resource functions

3. Supply suggestions to increase the traffic generation resource and provide crucial success components.

Targeted traffic Strategy #1 Content

Content will very likely be the groundwork for your company. It doesn’t make a difference what business enterprise product you use, content material promotes your company; it offers worth and trustworthiness and it pushes visitors to your site.

For the greater degree, content is a vital part of most traffic generating techniques. Regardless of whether you’re discussing blogging and site-building, linking, social media, or marketing with articles, all of which we will deal with in a second, content material is the building blocks of this strategy.

The reason being that’s the way the web functions. It’s a source of content material and as a web site proprietor and company owner, the easiest way for individuals to locate your site is for you to provide content material.

At any time somebody gets on the internet, they’re typically looking for information. They really want information. They wish to learn, they would like to enhance, and they would like to be entertained. It’s vital that you realize that content material doesn’t need to be just print content. It could also be audio or online video subject material.

It’s also essential to realize that content is proportional to the level of visitors you receive on your web site since, amongst other things, search engines like Google base their results around the content material you’ve got on your web site.

Let’s take a glimpse at the most fundamental element of content material as it applies to traffic generation.

SEO – Keywords

The foremost and probably most crucial way content material pushes visitors is it assists your web site to be visible on the various search engines. When Guru’s discuss Search Engine Marketing or SEO, they generally focus on written content.

The reason being: to be able to be visible on the major search engines results, whenever your prospective customers search for the information you have, search engines like Google require something to find or evaluate.

For instance, if the web page is all about sports health supplements, then your web page and web site is going to be compared to other web sites with similar kinds of info and keywords and phrases.

Through providing an abundance of content material on the web site regarding your niche subject areas, you are basically providing the various search engines much more of a good reason to list your site higher within the results. So when individuals seek out the information you have, they will see your web site, simply click through and there you are – you’ve got qualified targeted traffic.

Painting Brick – Hidden Cost You Should Know About

Homeowners often update the appearance of their homes with a coat of fresh paint. However if you are considering painting the ‘bricks’ on your home then there are a few things you should consider before you break out the spray guns and throw a party!

Permanence – The most important word to remember about painting brick is: permanence. That’s right. It’s a one way road. It is permanent and you can’t remove it once it has been applied. Now I know that some of you will say that you can get strippers and restoration cleaners to remove the paint if you really need to and that is true.

Remember though, you are entering a very expensive restoration process that is usually limited to very high end or very valuable masonry buildings with large amounts of funding. Practically speaking, restoration cleaning cost would simply be out of the range for all but the most affluent homeowner. (tens of thousands of dollars)

On-Going Maintenance – The day you apply the last coat of paint to the bricks on your home, is the first day paint degradation begins. Sooner or later the bricks will have to be painted again.

It has now become a never ending process. You will spend far more in the long run painting your brick over and over again then you would ever have spent in up-grading to brick work on your home in the first place. So a quick fix, like painting bricks you don’t particularly like, can often be an expensive mistake. Bricks will need to be re-painted more frequently than the rest of your home as well because of the risk of water entry which can cause severe damage.

Water Damage – The next point to remember is this: bricks need to breathe. What do I mean by that? Well bricks breathe naturally expelling moisture from the wall. When you coat them with paint you have effectively closed the pores of the bricks preventing them from breathing. In a perfect world this doesn’t sound like a bad idea because it effectively keeps the water out as well.

In real world situations though, paint will begin to crack fairly quickly. Minute hairline fissures will open allowing water to enter the masonry system with no way to escape. Unfortunately at this point it is hard for you to recognize or see the effects of the water entry, as it is hidden behind the paint.

As each freeze thaw cycle comes and goes real deterioration of the brick takes place and by the time the problem manifest the damage has already been done. Large portions of the wall area will have ‘brick face de-lamination’ and many more areas you can’t see will have de-lamination but will be held together by the paint. So a close inspection for damage will be necessary.

Now you not only have your ongoing paint maintenance to deal with but deteriorated brick repairs must be done as well.

So you can see how the seemingly simple remedy of painting your bricks to change its color can have far reaching implications and consequences. If you must go this route then I would suggest that you contact a local masonry repair expert for his advice on how to protect your masonry before painting and how to proceed with the painting process.

How to Start Your Own Pond Building Business

You can start your own business, and be your own boss, and work your own hours, when you are building and maintaining water ponds and garden ponds for yourself. You can start out building small ponds, and work your way up to bigger, more fancier ponds. You can buy small water ponds at some home improvement stores, and you should be able to find enough accessories, to start your own pond business.

You can also go all out, later on, buy having your own tractor to use to dig out the ponds. You can rent tractors and bobcats to dig out large ponds. For extra large ponds, you might even need a crane. But most average size ponds, can be done by hand, with a shovel, or several people digging at once. You can buy pond liners, and materials, from local suppliers, you can find in the telephone book, or on the internet. You can pick various rock designs, to form your pond. As with any pond, your imagination is the only thing stopping you from building a beautiful pond.

The pond business can be a form of art, as no two artists, will view the building of a pond the same way, you don’t really want to build your customer a square no frills pond. You want to think about it, and create a piece of art, for your customer, and that is how you should think of it. People love ponds with Lilly pads, goldfish, water fountains, etc. You can make good money putting in nice ponds.

You should take a picture of each pond job you complete, so that you have a nice portfolio to show potential new customers. You should make up fliers, and pass them out to landscape suppliers, home & garden stores, hardware stores, nurseries, feed supplies, and more. You can offer them a commission, or lump sum payment, for any pond jobs that they send your way, and you do. You should have nice signs on the side of your vehicle made up, saying you build ponds. You could take some digital pictures of some of your completed jobs later and print them out in color, and turn them into magnetic signs, to also put on your vehicle as a sales pitch, and a picture is worth a thousand words, they always say.

What Font Should You Use For Your Book?

One of the most common questions asked by would-be self-publishers who are intent on designing and typesetting their book themselves is, “What font should I use?”

I’m always relieved when somebody asks the question. At least, it means they’re not just blindly going to use the ubiquitous default fonts found in most word processing programs.

However, there is almost no way to answer the question. It’s like asking, “What’s the best car model for commuting to work everyday?”

You’ll get a different answer from almost everyone you ask. And they might all be correct.

I am willing to offer one hard-and-fast rule, however: don’t use Times New Roman or Times Roman. That will brand your book as the work of an amateur at first glance. And there are other, very practical, reasons for not using it. Times Roman and Times New Roman were designed for the narrow columns of newspapers, originally for the London Times back in the 1930s. Today, almost no newspapers still use it. How, or why, it became a word processing standard, I have no idea. The font tends to set very tight, making the text block on the page dense and dark.

Here are two caveats before proceeding to few recommendations:

  1. The typeface you choose may depend on how your book will be printed. If you look closely at most serif fonts (like Times), you will notice that there are thick and thin portions of each letter. If your book will be printed digitally, you should steer away from fonts with segments that are very thin. They tend to become too faint and affect readability.
  2. Don’t get carried away with the thousands of font choices available. Most are specialty fonts suitable for titles, headlines, advertising, emotional impact, etc. And never use more than a very few fonts in a single book — we usually choose one serif font for the main text body, a sans serif for chapter titles and headings within the chapters. Depending on the book, we may select a third font for captions on photos, graphics, tables, etc. (or maybe just a different size, weight, or style of one of the other two). We may select a specialty font for use on the front cover for the title and subtitle.

For 90% of books, any of the following fonts are excellent choices:

  • Palatino Linotype
  • Book Antiqua (tends to set tight, so you may have to loosen it up a bit)
  • Georgia
  • Goudy Old Style
  • Adobe Garamond Pro (tends to have a short x-height, so it might seem too small in typical sizes)
  • Bookman (the name sort of gives it away, doesn’t it?)
  • Century Schoolbook (tends to be a bit wide, creating extra pages)

You need to look at several paragraphs of each font to see what, if any, adjustments you may find necessary in things like character spacing and kerning. You want to avoid little confusions, like:

  • “vv” (double v) that looks like the letter “w”
  • “cl” (c l) that looks like the letter “d”

Such things can make the reading experience annoying.

If you ask other designers, you will likely get other suggestions, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least some of the above included in their recommendations.

You may run across some books with more unusual font choices, but there are often good reasons for it. Maybe the book is a humor book for which the designer chose a lighthearted font, for example. Such decisions should be made with care and thoughtful consideration for the effects on readability.

Never decide on your font or font size based only on viewing how it looks on your monitor. Most trade paperback books are printed in 10 or 11 point size, but some fonts require larger – or even smaller – sizes. If 12 points looks too big and 11 too small, you can try 11.5 – no need to stick with integer sizes. You might be surprised how much difference a half-point (or even a quarter-point) can make on the overall “feel” of the page.

You also have to decide on appropriate leading (pronounced like the metal), which is the distance from the baseline of one line of text to the baseline for the next line, measured in points. The result is usually expressed as a ratio of the font size in points to the selected leading in points. So, you might say you have set the body text in Georgia 11/14 or Bookman 10/12.5 (11-point size with 14 points leading and 10-point size with 12.5 points leading, respectively).

Word processing programs tend to work in decimal inches, forcing you to convert leading from points into inches. A standard point is equal to 0.0138 inches. Professional typesetting/layout programs (like Adobe InDesign) allow you to use points and picas to define all type measurements and settings. although you can also specify those settings in various other units (including inches).

Typically, book designers will develop more than one design for each book’s interior, using different fonts, sizes, and leadings. They should typeset a few pages of the actual manuscript and print them out with the same page settings they plan to use in the final book (e.g., 6″ x 9″ pages). This allows the client to compare them side-by-side and evaluate them for readability and overall look.

And don’t forget your target audience. Very young readers and very old readers do better with larger type. Books that are very textually dense with long paragraphs frequently need more leading and a wider font.

Ultimately, you have to choose based on what your gut reaction is to the typeset samples. It never hurts to ask other people to read it and tell you if one option is easier to read than another.

If you want to gain an appreciation for typography and how to make appropriate design decisions, I recommend the following excellent books:

The Complete Manual of Typography by James Felici

The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst

Book Design and Production by Pete Masterson

For those who insist on using Microsoft Word to typeset books, you really should buy and study Perfect Pages by Aaron Shepard. He is the reigning guru of how to do it.

It is far better to buy professional layout software and then learn all you can about typography and how to apply those principles to book design…or to hire a professional to do for you. The latter course will leave you more time to develop a dynamic marketing plan for your latest book and start writing your next one!

When you see him outside somewhere you have the immediate urge to go and talk to him. Any form of contact for you is good enough. Instead of doing that and ruining the impression that he is forming of you look right through him. Pretend like you didn’t even see him.

Move on with your life

Don’t give him too much of importance. Move on with your life and don’t dwell on the break up. You ex boyfriend will be seriously impressed at your determination, resolve and strength to take a personal failure with such maturity.

Get focused

Instead of waiting your time start focusing on things that you genuinely like doing. If you didn’t get time to pursue your hobbies or interests or if you wanted to learn a new art form etc now is the time. Your ex will be impressed that you are not wasting your time but are focusing on channelizing your energies positively.

Show him you have options

If you want a man to get impressed then start dating, give him an opportunity to chase you. Don’t wait around for him but start dating. These men should be better looking than your ex and if they are more successful you’ll get brownie points.

Never bitch about your ex

Never wash your linen in public. Be mature and understand that bitching about your ex isn’t going to impress him. In fact if you don’t pass any comment on him or casually praise his positive qualities, he will be much more impressed. You need to show him that you are not a petty person.

Accounting for Government Contracts – Fringe, Overhead and G&A

If you are planning to have the U.S. Government as a client, you will need to have your accounting systems set up so you can handle their accounting requirements. Regardless of whether you are engaging in a plain vanilla contract or an SBIR grant, you will be required to negotiate fringe benefit rates, overhead rates, and general and administrative rates.

Fringe benefits rates include

  • Compensated Absences, such as Vacation, Holidays, and Sick Leave;
  • Medical Programs, such as Health and Dental Insurance;
  • Retirement, such as the Defined Contribution Portion of your Retirement Plan and Plan Service Fees;
  • Long-term Disability Coverage;
  • Worker’s Compensation Coverage; and
  • Employee Wellness, such as Fitness Club Membership and Other Wellness Programs

Overhead covers direct and indirect support of the employees whose time is being billed to the Government. This includes items like

  • Rent (only for the space that those employees use);
  • Depreciation of their furniture and equipment;
  • Utilities (based on the space allotment for those employees); and
  • Supplies that these employees share, such as office supplies.

General and administration covers other costs that are necessary for the company to perform in this contract, including:

  • Management (and their associated fringe, direct, and indirect costs)
  • Legal costs
  • State and Federal taxes
  • Marketing to the Government costs
  • Accounting

Note, however, that they have extensive regulations covering was is not considered an allowable cost (see the FAR section 31.205 – Selected Costs [http://farsite.hill.af.mil/reghtml/regs/far2afmcfars/fardfars/far/31.htm#P268_51249] to get a specific description as to what is allowable and what is not.

Once you have negotiated these rates, you will be required to back them up yearly using an indirect cost model to show that you are matching your negotiated rates. This model is subject to audit.

Although you can figure out what needs to go into these calculations, it will take a long time to read all the regulations. If you believe that you want to win Government contracts, you must think ahead or hire a consultant to assist you with the process.

Worm Farming As One of the Ways to Recycle Food Waste Effectively

Food waste is generated daily at an alarming rate as the world population grows. If we are not caring enough to protect the environment, the food waste can easily fill up all the landfill in no time at all.

Fortunately, there are better ways than throwing away all the food waste into the rubbish dump. Worm farming is a great way to turn your leftover food waste into a natural and rich fertiliser with the help of the worms. These little creatures can easily eat up your leftover kitchen scraps and convert them into valuable worm casting or worm compost.

Even if you live in a small apartment or flat, you can easily placed a worm bin either in a balcony, as long as it is cool and shaded and away from any direct sunlight.

If you buy the worm bin, it normally comes in a stackable plastic trays or containers with maybe at least 3 containers. The bottom most container is usually attached with tap or spout to drain away any excess water. This water known as worm tea is excellent to be used to your plant but it has to be watered down first as it is highly concentrated.

Ok, now that you got the worm bin, place it in a cool and shaded area of your home, maybe on the balcony, at the back of your kitchen or in the garage.

Line up the second container with damp shredded old newspaper and make sure that it is not wet or soggy. You can also add in any egg cartons which has been torn into small pieces, some saw dust and a layer of soil to make it more homely for these little creatures. Make sure that the bedding is loosely piled and not tight to allow for easy movement of the worms.

Then you can add it your leftover kitchen waste but you need to sort them out first as not all are suitable for the worms. You can put leftover fruits and vegetable but not of citrus fruits such as oranges or pineapples. Avoid spicy food and salty food such as chilly, curry, salt, garlic and onion.

Tea bags, coffee grounds, crushed egg shells, bread are great for them too. Other waste such as vacuum cleaner dust, rotten leaves and hair are also suitable as worm feed. Please don’t give them meat, fish or chicken as these could be oily and fatty and not their favourite.

The food can be layered alternately in between the bedding to avoid any unpleasant smell from the worm bin. Then you can add in the worms. The best worms for this job is usually the red worms which you can initially get from the local worm farmers or suppliers.

Given the right condition, the worms can eat away and digest the food waste about half their own weight daily. For example if you have 500g of worms, they can easily eat up 250g of food waste daily. What they excrete ie the worm poo or worm casting is great as natural fertilizer for your plants and gardens. The worm castings are free from any chemicals and able to protect your plants from any diseases.

When the food and bedding is almost finished, you can line up the top container with a new set of bedding and food waste as described above. The worms then would simple migrate to top container, leaving behind the worm castings which you can collect and use for your plants.

Electronic Air Cleaner – What Are the Benefits?

When installed into your home’s heating and cooling system, an Electronic Air Cleaner traps and filters up to 99%* of airborne particles passing through the system to make sure cleaner air is distributed to all rooms in your home. When this air goes through a EAC, the pre-filter traps the majority of the large particles. The particles that are too small to be trapped in the pre-filter are charged positive, and then attracted to negatively charge plates.

This advanced air filter captures microscopic impurities like dust, smoke and smog particles in addition to larger particles like mold spores and cat dander. Plus, you can say goodbye to monthly filter replacements by simply washing the air cleaner cells in your dishwasher or sink. If you have pets, smokers, allergy or asthma suffers in your home, you may want to think about a Whole-house Electronic Air Cleaner.

A EAC can improve the indoor air quality as well as the performance of your system. That’s why many people are now investing in electronic air cleaners, to treat the air in their homes and minimize pollutants. Polarization technology effectively removes mold spores, bacteria, smoke and carcinogenic particles that other filter systems will not easily stop.

If you or someone in your family has health issues that relate to air quality, then an electronic air cleaner is the way to go. If you are installing a new heating or air conditioning system, then make sure you have an electronic cleaner installed with the new system. If you have an existing hot air heat or air conditioning system, then you can have one installed in the old system. The new filter can be easily installed in most hot air heating systems.

Electronic air cleaners can clean up many bad things in the air that normal filters will not catch. For best results make sure to clean the plates often. The effectiveness of the air cleaner will degrade as the build up of dirt accumulates on the plates. Clean plates will give much better results. They can also be effective in removing smoke and odors also. The only downsides to an EAC that I have found are the noise (snapping or popping) and the creation of ozone in some instances. The noise you will get used to after awhile. The ozone will be stronger if the cleaner is too large for the building. If it is a problem, either speed up the air flow or install a smaller air cleaner.

Electronic air cleaners overall are a great way to filter the air that you breathe and make sure that the quality of the air in your home is the best quality.

The Overheating Window Or Central Air Conditioning Unit – How Much Heat is Too Much?

Is your Central Air Conditioner Condenser or Window Air Conditioner overheating? Maybe they are and there is a problem or maybe not. The First thing to remember is that the main purpose of the air conditioning unit is to remove heat from the space they are cooling. This means that heat will be coming from the discharge of the unit. How much is normal and how do you tell what is normal?

Heat is a normal by-product of cooling. The process of cooling any space will require that the refrigerant is cooled and the excess heat discharged to the outdoors. In the case of central air conditioning this is done through the condenser fan and is usually discharged straight up. If the condenser coil is hot and the fan is not running then there is a good chance that the fan motor has gone bad. Check for power to the wires going to the motor. If there is power going to the motor (110V) then the motor probably needs to be replaced. The most common problem with the condenser fan motors is the failure of the bearings in the motor. This will cause the fan to turn hard and then it will not run.

If the condenser fan motor is running and there seems to be very little air coming out of the fan, then the coil may be plugged with dirt. I have written an article on cleaning the condenser coil for information on how to fix that problem. A dirty condenser coil will kill the efficiency of the unit and also make the compressor work much harder which will kill that more quickly also.

On window air conditioners the coil can also over heat. If the fan fails on them you will not have any discharge air on the inside either. This is because the same motor through a double shaft runs both the inside fan and the condenser fan. Most of the time the problem with overheating on window air conditioners, is because of a dirty outside coil.

This outside coil can be cleaned, but the air conditioner should be removed from the window to do it. You also have to be careful when you clean window units so you do not get anything wet that will fail because of water. If you can pull the unit out of the outside chassis, do that before trying to clean it. Make sure that it is totally dry before reinstalling it and applying power to the unit.

As you can see the most common cause of overheating with any air conditioning unit is a lack of maintenance to the unit. Always make sure to keep you air conditioning unit cleaned thoroughly for the best performance. Make regular cleanings a practice that you do faithfully every year. In very dirty places you may have to clean the unit more often than that. Lastly remember that heat will be given off of the unit when it is running. Do not confuse that heat with a problem heat. When an air conditioner is running it will seem to be very hot in some places. This discharge of heat is normal operation of the unit.
