Quick Facts and Details Worth Knowing About Printed Circuit Boards

A printed circuit board (PCB) is intended to connect and support various kinds of electronic components with the help of conductive elements. Most of the electronic components are soldered on the PCB or may be embedded in what is known as the substrate. PCBs can have or two copper layers, based on which they can be called single sided or double sided. Typically, the main insulating substrate used in PCBs is "FR-4 glass epoxy". Printed circuit boards are extensively used in the electronic industry, except for the simple products that can work otherwise. Here are some of the other things that you need to know.

Deeper Understanding of PCB's

Printed circuit boards, as stated, are a must in the electronic industry. While there are other alternatives such as 'point to point construction', printed circuit boards are effective an extremely useful for varied kinds of production needs. Typically, PCBs come in a wide range of specifications, and are customizable to fit your specific needs. PCBs require design effort on part of the manufacturer to get the right kind of circuit. In the long process of designing electronic products, PCBs are extremely effective and affordable compared to some of the other wiring components. If the PCB does not have any components embedded in it, it is known as etched wiring board. Today, the PCB industry is a billion-dollar industry with a huge number of manufacturers and businesses involved at different levels.

Finding A Reliable PCB Manufacturer

When it comes to printed circuit boards, you have to find manufacturer you can rely on. You need to know and check a few things before you can select a provider that fits you.

1. Know their expertise. All PCB manufacturing services are not the same, and therefore, expertise is an aspect you can not compromise with. You also need to understand their client base, because that can tell a lot about the kind of work they have done so far. For example, if a company has worked with clients in the field of communications, aerospace and medicine, they will certainly have more experience than someone who has worked with just one or two companies in the same industry.

Capabilities. Does a company deal in certain kind of PCBs? Do they offer PCB prototype assembly? You need to know if the company can handle all sorts of verticals related to the industry and if they are capable enough to produce PCBs in quantities as required. You may be interested in their range of specific capabilities and service highlights, which sets them apart from others.

3. Pricing and quality tests. PCB manufacturers are expected to be transparent and extremely honest with their clients as far as quality tests are concerned. If required, they must be willing to discuss their testing process in detail. Also, the pricing should be as flexible as possible.

Check online now to find more about printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers around you, and before you place an order, do not shy away from seeking an estimate.

Choosing A New Floor

Is it time to give that tired kitchen floor a face lift? Are you looking for just the right finishing touch for your new living room? The floor you choose can brighten a dark room, make a small one appear larger, or set the mood and tone for the rest of your decorating. There are so many flooring options available on the market these days that you're biggest problem will be deciding which floor you like best! Here are a few suggestions to ease your decision process.

With all those choices available, how do you decide what type of floor fits your lifestyle and design sense the best? There are a number of factors to consider, including the mood you want to set, the style and colors of your furnishings, and what the room will be used for. The perfect floor for your work-in kitchen may be too dark for your bright and airy living room, and the floor that you love for your living room could be too formal or too delicate for your back patio. Rest assured though, that there is a perfect choice for every room in your home.

Things To Consider When Choosing a Floor

How much traffic will the floor get?

The amount and type of traffic that your room will see should be one of the largest deciding factors in the kind of floor that you choose. A family room floor with a ping-pong table and busy, active life needs a floor that will stand up to lots of foot traffic and the occasional spill. In addition, you want a floor that will not show wear, will be comfortable underfoot, and easy to care for. Vinyl floor tiles or linoleum may be your best choice there, though a good, durable wood laminate floor might do well, as well.

What's the moisture level? Is the floor likely to get wet or is the room naturally 'damp'?

Some floors just are not suited for damp areas. A basement playroom with a high moisture content, or a bathroom are seldom qualified for a solid wood floor, though there are some choices in wood laminates that might work if finished properly. Instead, you may choose slate or ceramic tiles with area rugs for the bathroom for a dramatic look that wipes up well and keeps its gloss for years.

What's your personal style? What mood do you want in your room?

Want a luxurious feel? A thick pile rug over polished wood is a classic, elegant look that is pure luxury. A floor to accent a spare, modern style? Stone or slate, polished to a high sheen is a beautiful backdrop for leather and steel furniture and ascetic lines. A wooden parquet floor can be a dramatic focal point in an open foyer, or can lend a touch of Continental elegance to a formal living room. Wooden floors can hit any mood from rustic to royal, and the choices of color, pattern and style in vinyl or ceramic tiles can fit any active room in your home.

What Does It Mean for Someone To Have High Blood Pressure, HPB?

High blood pressure is a problem which the blood flow is impeded by some means other than which is detectable ordinarily. It is clinical state of the heart and of the blood circulation in everyone, the heart acting as a mechanical pump and as an electrical pump combine in one, need to daily pump the blood around the body effectively, effectively and scrupulously.

This fantastic made up combination of mechanic cum electrical pump system help the heart to function properly as a good pump which distributes vital material [wastes, oxygen, drugs, water, hormones and nutrients] to and from all the body organ as the case may demand it physiologically functionally.

But in the hypertensive the heart need to accommodate and fulfill more demand than it normally should, yet it must perform these daily tasks effectively and efficiently. This means the heart of the hypertensive needs to put in more effort in order to achieve its daily tasks.
The problem with an increased work demand for the heart is that the heart must increase its pumping capacity so as to be able to overcome the impedance to its successful blood distribution job.

Unfortunately the pressure to achieve the feat increase as the impedance and demand increase. Therefore a higher-than normal blood pressure occurs. And at any above normal high blood pressure is a risk to all important organ and structures of the body.

Therefore the person with a high blood pressure has a body whose demands far out weigh the abilities of his heart normal ability, so his heart must of necessity put up more effort in order to meet this demand a task that must be done but which is very distressful to the laboring heart itself.

Do-It-Yourself Woodworking Plans

If you are a woodworker in need of Do-It-Yourself Woodworking Plans, you've come to the right place. They are available at the end of this article. You can read on or simply scroll down to the links now.

If you are taking up woodworking as a hobby, I encourage you. Woodworking is an excellent hobby. Not only is it fun, but it results in functional and decorative items that you, your family and your friends can use around the house, and it can become a lucrative business.

Before you try this hobby, however, I want to dispel the popular misconception that you will always save a lot of money by doing it yourself. I built oak dressers and toy boxes for my four grandchildren. They turned out beautifully, and they will probably be passed down for generations, but I could have bought perfectly acceptable dressers for a little over half the cost of building them. I do not want to disappoint; you can have many reasons for getting into this pastime, but if saving money is the main one, you will most likely be disappointed for a number of reasons.

• Materials are expensive. All grades of manufactured wooden furniture are available on the market. A common practice of manufacturers is to reduce costs by using inferior materials where they will not show. Particle board, which is restructured sawdust, is a common material used in furniture for this purpose. It has very little strength; it's damaged by even a little bit of water; and it's ugly. Woodworkers usually opt for quality, which means that they reject this type of material and the mindset that allows its use; therefore, your cost goes up.

• Buying one item at a time is expensive. Even manufacturers who use all top-quality materials can save money through bulk purchases. For example, a sheet of plywood that costs you $ 40 can be bought for $ 30 or even $ 20 if purchased in large quantities of 100 or 1,000 sheets. Bulk purchasing has another less obvious benefit: If your project requires only 5 feet of an 8 foot long board, for example, the extra 3-foot section will probably become scrap; whereas, the manufacturer can use it in the next unit.

• Manufacturers use an assembly line or assembly procedure. For almost every cut made on a table saw, you will have to reset the fence. Resetting the fence takes time and is another opportunity for human error. A manufacturer's operator will set up the saw to cut a specific part, and then cut out hundreds or thousands of parts all exactly the same size. With the use of this process, the workman becomes exceptionally fast at turning out perfect pieces.

• Tools are expensive. If you need a particular tool in order to complete your project properly, the cost of that tool has to be considered. The manufacturer can spread that cost over hundreds or thousands of units.

• Your time is valuable. You've heard the phrase, "Time is Money." If you are doing woodworking to save money, consider the value of your time, because you could probably make more money in your job or profession than you will save on your project by doing it yourself. If you are doing woodworking for fun and to have a sense of accomplishment, then the value of your time is not the issue.

Sometimes, to save money, we get into a situation that costs more in the long run. The quality of the tools you purchase is an excellent example. I have never been disappointed by paying extra for the best tool available, but I have often been disappointed by cheap tools. Quality tools are the least expensive in the long run.

Your plans are also an example of the importance of quality. Plans are the results on paper after all mistakes have been corrected. Without a good plan, you have to make your mistakes on hardwood, and that costs time and money. Invest in clearly written, fully illustrated plans with complete sets of instructions, like the ones in the links below.

All in all, you may spend more time and money on your woodworking project, but you will have the supreme satisfaction of having completed a quality project that you, your family or whoever else might be the recipient, will treasure for a lifetime.

What Does "Timing the Market" Or "Market Timing" Really Mean?

"Timing the market" is considered by many to be a foolish exercise. Timing the market is indeed foolish if it is done the way many seem to think it is done. However, it is really a matter of having a good sell strategy or stop loss system coupled with a good buy strategy. Expert timers do not buy because they feel a stock is a "good" one to own, or sell because they feel it is "high." They buy because there has been a buy signal, and they sell because there has been a sell signal.

Some writers in the financial media color their articles with their own uninformed opinions rather than search out the facts. Let me give you an example of what I mean. In a recent well-known financial publication, a widely followed writer wrote about "market timing" and said that it has taken on a new meaning that differs markedly from the original meaning of the term. The term "market timing" has been used in reference to how some individuals trade mutual funds by illegally locking in an unfair price advantage and profiting on small pricing gaps between markets in different time zones. The writer mentioned above informed the reader that in the original definition, market timing involved shifting money into cash or bonds when the investor thinks stocks are overpriced and moving back into stocks when he or she thinks they are cheap. This author was correct with regard to the changing of the definition. However, he then went on to say what he thinks is wrong with the original timing concept.

The problem is that he leads his readers to assume timing decisions are based on what the timer "thinks" about the market and economy and what he believes "ought "to be the influence of such an environment on investments. This indeed appears to be the way most amateurs and some under-performing professionals practice "timing." Fund-provided data does show that there is more money flowing into funds at market highs and more withdrawals at market lows, reflecting how most people attempt to "time" their investments. This does show that, as a group, they are almost always wrong. In fact, that's why there is such a thing as a "conflicting market indicator" based on what the small investor is doing. It is an odd-lot volume indicator based on the fact that the small investor tends to increase his buying at the highs and increase his selling at the lows. Therefore, when there is mounting odd-lot buying (individual investors are "feeling good" about the market), professionals view it as a warning signal of an impending market downturn.

However, it is a fallacy to use this data to claim that it proves timing does not work. There are many excellent timers. Most professional "timers," the people who do it successfully, do not base timing activities on how they "feel" about the market. For example, our own traders generally do not say to themselves, "Interest rates are likely to rise, therefore I will avoid fixed-income investments because they will likely drop in value." While the idea is strategically sound in this case and the proposed course of action is correct, this thinking process does not resemble the way the most successful market timers make their buy and sell decisions. While there are some who base decisions on such things as their assessment of the economy or the effect of war on oil prices, most of the highly successful timers use a variety of technical indicators and focus on the current status of the market (what IS) rather than on what they think the market is going to do next. "Do we have a current sell signal or not?" Opinions about whether stocks are too high or too low have little to do with such strategies. For them, quantitative data, technical indicators, and action signals are the bases for their decision-making.

Let me illustrate with a few simple timing models. Let us absorb your goal is to capture the best returns you can by investing in any sector or market on the planet. To do this, you may decide to give your attention to ETFs. Therefore, you may rank all ETFs in the order of their strength. Assume that you have a way of measuring, as our model does, more persistent strength than that measured by the RSI. Your timing model might then be expressed as follows. You will buy the top 10 ranked ETFs. Then, you will sell any ETF that drops out of the top 30 and replace it with the highest ranked ETF in the top 10 that is not in your portfolio. Assuming your collection of ETFs represents a wide variety of sectors and markets both domestic and foreign (and includes US index ETFs), and assuming you are always invested in the strongest of the strong, your portfolio should significantly outperform the US stock market.

Another example of a simple timing system might be expressed as follows. You will buy an undervalued stock when it closes above its 150-day moving average but only after that average has begun to rise. You will sell if the stock closes below its 150-day moving average but only after that average has begun to decline. A 10-day moving average or some other moving average might be used instead of the closing price in order to reduce whipsaw effects, and other moving rates could be used instead of the 150-day average, depending on the individual's investment time-horizon. Here, the idea is to be invested in the stock during most of any up-trend and in cash during most of any downtrend.

There is no "feeling" involved in the decision process of either of these timing models. In actual practice, both of these models may be enhanced with other rules and supported by other indicators to reduce false signals. The "timer" is not interested in what the market "ought "to do next. He is interested only in what "is." The most consistently profitable timers simply obey the rules of their model. For example, either an ETF has fallen out of the top 30 ETFs or it has not. If it has, it must be replaced. There is no anxiety-ridden decision process here. The successful timer just does it. Why the ETF has fallen out of the top 30 is not important. There are forces at work in the marketplace that no single individual can know completely. Whenever an ETF falls out of the top 30, it is replaced by another ETF. For some reason, that other ETF has become supported by more consistent buying power. It is the flow of money that causes "strength." Top timers using this model would simply follow the money by going where the strength is.

After years of high volatility, it has become apparent to an increasing number of investors that some form of timing is a more credible approach to investing than the old buy-and-hold strategy. Many experts agree that increased volatility means active trading could be the best way to make money in coming years because trends will be borne-lived. This is not to insist that investors should become day traders. The spectrum of traders is broad. Some traders may indeed hold an individual stock for a long time. The point is that having a well-defined sell strategy and implementing it will probably be the best way to make money in volatile markets. Although volatile markets can make it easier to make gains, volatile market also tend to take those gains away. It is not your tally of paper profits, but what you can keep in your account that counts. The concept that "buy and hold" is the safe way to invest has become very misleading to the public. People who bought and held LA Gear through a prolonged declination until it simply disappeared understood that. After the crash of 2000, investors appeared to appreciate the value of having a stop loss strategy, but a few years later they apparently forgot the lesson. Increasingly, people have seen to be proud of the fact that they never trade their stocks because they are "long-term investors." What the term "long-term-investor" has come to mean is "I do not really have any sell strategy or use stop losses." While it is well to be a long-term investor in the general sense, being a long-term investor in any individual stock has the potential of becoming a painful and cost learning experience. Those who do not adhere to a set of rules for selling are begging the market to teach them the lesson again.

10 Really Good Reasons to Quit Your Job and Start Your Own Business

It's been five years since I made the decision to leave my corporate job and start my own company. No question about it, leaving nice coworkers, a stable paycheck and 12 years of tenure with one company was the scariest thing I'd ever done. And yet looking back, it was the defining moment not only of my career, but of my personal development as well. The fact is, I am now so enamored of blazing my own trail that I could never go back – I am hopelessly, incurably, unemployable.

As a result, I receive a steady stream of, "Can I buy you a cup of coffee?" invitations – from old collections, new friends, complete strangers – anyone who is considering a change, and who wants to know, "Why should I start my own business?" This is what I say:

1. You'll dance to your own music. There's a lot of noise in the corporate world. Not physical noise, but opinions, rules, history and a whole lot of, "that's the way we do it around here," always just an inch or two below the surface. In such a setting it's hard to find your path, or as I like to say, "hear your own music."

Once you're on your own, you'll suddenly begin to hear what's there, and the more you can hear it and have the courage to follow it, the more enjoyable and yes, profitable your life will be. The fact is, there is no right way to live, to act or grow a business.

2. You'll never have to retire. Retiring is a strange concept to the satisfied, self-employed person. It implies that work is something you want to be done with, something you wished were over. When you really find your passion however, the concept becomes meaningless. Do painters stop painting? Do musicians stop playing music? Do comedians stop being funny just because they've reached a certain age? Not if they are doing what they really want to be doing. Sure, you may slow down or change focus as you get older, but the game is never over, since the game and your life will be one.

3. You'll put your money where your mouth is. I never planned to start my own business, and I always secretly believed that I did not have the guts to be successful on my own. When I look back now, I'm not even sure how I managed to convince myself to leave the perceived safety of living within the protected walls of a large corporation. When I finally jumped however, I was surprised by the number of friends, former co-workers and family who remarked on my "courage." Frankly, I'm not any braver now than I was before, but I know with certainty that I do not need a corporation to take care of me (and neither do you).

4. You'll no longer live in two worlds. I used to be two people: "corporate Michael" and "home life Michael." Corporate Michael was less friendly, less intuitive and a lot less interesting. I found it easy to switch back and forth between the two Michaels, and for a long time it did not even strike me as odd that I would make decisions at work based on a completely different set of criteria regarding what was fair, what was smart or what was worth doing. That's over – I'm now one person no matter what I do, and I have a more balanced, more humanistic approach to business.

5. You'll know your own power. Swept up in the turmoil of working as part of a corporation, there's a tension to blame others, wait for others, think that others are making things happen. Working alone you'll realize how much control you actually have (and have always had). That realization will give you the courage and drive to do more things than you ever dreamed of when you saw yourself as an insignificant part of a big machine. You'll have nobody else to blame, and even more importantly, you will see how much credit you really do deserve for everything you've created.

6. You'll be free to walk away. When you first start out on your own, you will probably be grateful for whatever business comes your way. The thought of "walking away" from a client may seem suicidal. It is not. As your reputation grows, people will approach you, ready to hand you their money and have you begin work. That's terrific. However, in some cases, the fit will not be there – something in your gut will tell you it's a bad match. You will learn that you can say "no thank you" and walk away. Nobody assigns projects or clients or teams to you anymore. You and only you decide who you work with and on what terms, and if it does not feel right you need only say so.

7. You'll make new friends. If you've been with the same company for a long time, you've probably developed several close relationships. You may be afraid that you'll be lonely and isolated out here in the "cold cruel world." Nothing could be further from the truth. Starting your own business gains you immediate entrance into a collegial world of fellow sole proprietors and entrepreneurs, eager to have you along for the ride. We hold meetings, we have events, we meet for lunch, we talk on the phone – we share ideas, support each other and hang out together. Price of admission: a friendly demeanor and a willingness to help other people find their way.

8. You'll pick the players. Wherever you sit in a company, you've got people you interact with every day. Your boss, your direct reports, the head of the legal department, the desktop support guy, the receptionist. Hopefully you like and get along with most of these people, but whether you do or not, you're stuck with each other. When you run your own company on the other hand, you pick who's on the team. You get to choose your attorney, your accountant, your landlord, your printer, your partners, your clients – everyone in your daily life is there because you decided to put them there. You get to choose.

9. You'll have real problems, instead of imaginary ones. In a corporate setting, your happiness and success is dependent upon tons of intertwined relationships and handed-down decisions, any one of which can change your world in ways you may not expect or even understand. With so much out of your control, it's hard not to spend time "What If-ing" and worrying about the future: "What's my boss really think of me? What if I do not get put in charge of that new project? What if they cut my budget next year? " Fear of what might happen can become worse than the situation itself – imaginary problems.

When you're building your own business you're immersed in reality. Sure, you may have days where you worry about paying the mortgage, but you'll be in the game, fighting the good fight, and no longer obsessed with the possibility of being blindsided by an unforeseen shift in the corporate winds.

10. You'll find your purpose. You did not come here to follow someone else's vision or sit on the sidelines watching the clock tick away until retirement. But somehow, somewhere along the way, you forgot. Now, after so many years of following the pack, you've come to see work as a place you go to earn enough money to do the things you really want to do. It does not have to be that way. Working on your own will give you the freedom and focus to find the exhilarating, balanced, self-directed career you've always dreamed of.

One of my favorite quotes is from the book, The Artist's Way, and I've had it taped to the top of my computer monitor for the last five years: "Leap, and the net will appear." Go ahead, I'll be waiting for you.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Banana Plugs

There’s a lot of debate among home entertainment enthusiasts about banana plugs and whether or not they are worth using. For every magazine article or internet message board post that praises them, there are just as many that claim that they are expensive and don’t offer any benefits. Not surprisingly, a lot of people are completely confused about this issue, so here is a brief breakdown of the major advantages and disadvantages so that you can see both sides of the argument, and make you own mind up about whether you want to use these plugs or not.

Banana plugs have several advantages: for a start they offer a much more professional appearance to your system. A lot of people feel that bare cables don’t look very pleasing, so a gold plated banana plug is the ideal way adding a bit of style to a terminal. Another advantage is that banana plugs make it so easy to make connections, there’s no more need to fumble around trying to thread the speaker cable around a binding post, just push the banana plug into the jack and you are good to go.

Sooner or later copper connections are likely to start corroding, and this can cause interference to be introduced in to signal. However, seeing as most banana plugs are gold plated they are totally resistant to corrosion, giving you one less thing to worry about.

Some people argue that these plugs, or any terminals for that matter, have an effect on the sound quality, but this really isn’t the case. The signals carried by speaker cable are relatively low frequency so any distortion caused by the plug on the end of the cable is absolutely minute; the vast majority of people wouldn’t be able to notice any difference in sound quality at all.

Banana plugs allow you to quickly and easily make connections that are secure and protected against corrosion, which coupled with the advantages above all seem to paint a very positive picture. However, banana plugs do have some drawbacks.

A major issue is cost. With a pair of banana plugs retailing at around $10 (although it is possible to spend much more) the task of fitting a plug on the end of every speaker cable can soon mount up, especially if your system uses several speakers all with their own cables. You could easily end up spending over $100 just on plugs, and for some people this cost just cannot be justified.

Something else to bear in mind is that an incorrectly installed plug may have an adverse impact on sound quality. This has been countered lately with plugs that simply screw onto the end of the cable instead of needing to be soldered on. However, whenever you introduce a connection you are creating a potential weak-point for interference to be introduced. When using bare wire there is just one point that interference can enter and that is between the end of the cable and the terminal; but when using banana plugs you double this as interference can enter between the end of the cable and the plug as well as the end of the plug and the terminal.

There’s no right or wrong answer to the question of whether you should use these connectors, it’s one of those things that really does depend on you. If you are only interested in getting the best sound quality, then it’s probably best to avoid unnecessary expense and just leave the end of your cable bare. However, if you want your connections to look professional, or if you want the added convenience of being able to quickly connect and disconnect your speaker cables then banana plugs are a worthwhile purchase.

The Most Important Golf Terms

Possessing complete knowledge about the terms and conditions related to any game makes playing that game easier. Similarly there are some pre-set golf terms for playing this game which are very important to be known when you are going to play the game. The terms and strategies associated with golf are completely different from other games.

One of the important golf terms is that you play by hitting a golf ball with the help of golf clubs on teeing ground. There is a term called putting area in golf where a hole is found and ball comes here traveling along fairways after being hit. Basically the prime target in golf is hitting the ball into hole in as few attempts as you could do. It shows that a golf player need to complete hole in fewer stroke by hitting the ball using golf club from teeing ground into the hole in putting ground. Thus the golf term which is important in it is to hit ball from golf club as little times as you can do in getting it from teeing ground to putting ground. A complete round of golf contains a play of eighteen holes. It means you have to reach golf ball into the hole for eighteen times.

Normally, there are two ways of playing this game in golf terms. In one type of match play, depending upon the holes lost and won, winner of game is declared. In another type of match play, which is known as stroke play, winner is one who completes the whole round with minimum number of strokes.

Apart from it there are some more golf terms related to it, which are as follows-

  • When the golfer is going to make stroke, then avoid talking close to him/her, because it might harm you.
  • You should make your full efforts to play when all players in group are already out of way.
  • Do not delay in playing and try to leave as early as possible along with other members of your group.
  • Before starting count your golf clubs because you are not allowed to take more than fourteen golf clubs.
  • Always ensure well that you are teeing off in front of the tee markers. In match play in case, your tee off is a bit of outside the area then you might be asked to repeat it without any penalty. But if you are playing match play then in such case you have to bear two-stroke penalty.
  • When your ball is lying in a water hazard or banker then you should first complete your downswing then only touch the water or the bunker.
  • Always strike the ball well instead of resorting to spooning the ball or pushing it.

Thus by following these golf terms you can successfully play golf.

How the Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie Can Help You Improve Your Problem Solving Skills

A well-written murder mystery is the perfect way to learn problem solving skills and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie delivers. First published in 1926, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a part of the Hercule Poirot mystery series. I love murder mysteries, thrillers and dramas and am pretty good at foreshadowing, but I didn’t see the end of this story coming.

After I finished reading the book, I realized that the end made perfect sense and the clues were right there, but I didn’t ask enough questions and I let my feelings get in the way of good judgement. The private detective Hercule Poirot’s personality drove me nuts, and he reminded me of Lieutenant Columbo in the television series Columbo, who I didn’t like as well. This dislike of Hercule Poirot prevented me from closely looking at the clues and evidence. There were a few times when I raised my brows while reading, but I let it go because the information appeared insignificant.

Poirot wasn’t much of a team player, and held a lot of information close to his chest, and in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, though he appeared to be working closely with the other main character Dr. James Sheppard, he left him in the dark as well. He made many requests to Dr Sheppard without explaining why. I should have asked myself why did he do that? Good problem solvers ask a lot of questions.

In the story, Mrs Ferrars poisoned her husband who wasn’t a very nice man. Most would agree that the husband wasn’t very nice, but they didn’t know that he was actually poisoned (murdered). Someone discovered her secret and decided to blackmail her. After paying the blackmailer a considerable sum of £20,000 in a year and feeling overwhelmed and remorse for causing her husband’s death she takes her own life.

Roger Ackroyd and Mrs Ferrars fell in love after the death of her husband and he intended to marry her. She decided to confess her sin about her husband’s death and let him know that she was also being blackmailed. Ackroyd was very shocked by her news. At the time of the revelation, she refused to give him the name of her blackmailer. She promised to disclose that piece of information at a later date. She mails her suicide note to Ackroyd, and it included the name of the blackmailer because she wanted him to deal with the person responsible.

But Ackroyd was killed shortly after he received the letter, and it is not clear if he actually read the letter. Poirot’s hypothesis is that the blackmailer and Ackroyd’s murderer is the same person. Of all the characters in the book, which one would likely know about poisons and would be able to detect it? Also, someone called Dr. Sheppard to report the Roger Ackroyd’s murder. When the police investigated, they discovered that the call was made from a pay phone? Why, and is that important to solving the mystery?

Problem: Someone murdered Roger Ackroyd and we need to find out who.

How: He was stabbed with his own souvenir dagger.

Question: Who had access and what is the motive?

Caution: DNA testing wasn’t available then.

Basic Problem Solving 101

  1. Preparation (Research)
  2. Incubation (Lay the issue aside for a period of time)
  3. Illumination (The moment when the new solution emerges)
  4. Verification/Implementation (Test out the solution then apply it)

The problem solving formula is similar to the creativity and idea generating model.

While gathering the evidence and doing background checks on the suspects, Poirot discovered that Parker the butler had blackmailed a previous employer. Is past behaviour a predictor of future behaviour, or is it in this situation simply a red herring (deliberate attempt to divert attention)? In the story there was mention of a salesman visiting Ackroyd before his death, who worked for a company that sold Dictaphones. Dr. Sheppard’s hobby is inventing wireless devices like alarm clocks and so on. There was some confusion about the time of Ackroyd’s death. Are these pieces of information important, or are they red herrings as well.

In problem solving, after you have gathered the information, you have to analyze it to determine its credibility, and decide if you can use it to base your decisions on. Poirot corroborated the information he gathered and checked the alibis. At some point you need to step back from the situation and let your subconscious mull over things for a while. Poirot loved to step back and reflect on all the information he had gathered so far. And if you have done a good job of gathering the information, and laid out the facts methodically, you will solve the problem. Poirot was able to solve the problem of who killed Roger Ackroyd by doing just that.

I recommend that you read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and as you do so use the basic problem solving model to figure out who committed the murder. Always ask yourself why when something baffles you in the story. Pay attention to the clues that Agatha Christie gives you, and I am sure you won’t be surprised by the ending the way I was. This story is applicable to life. Think about how many times you have made your annoyance with someone cloud your judgement, which prevented you from making the correct decision. How can you use this information?
