New Bathroom Flooring for a Renewed Look

In terms of the size of your bathroom whether it is large or small, the floor occupations a lot of it's space. If your bathroom really has no major needs, but it just has a case of the blah's, maybe you should consider laying a new floor.

Bathroom flooring materials come in natural stones, laminates, man made materials mimicking stone, wood laminates and vinyl. They all have their good and bad points.

Natural stone, gives an opulent air to a bathroom and is often a willing flooring material for remodeling. Natural stones can be very durable, but they are expensive, and they do have special cleaning and maintenance needs.

The man made materials are also on the high end. They are very durable, but periodically require professional maintenance.

Wood laminates are less expensive than natural stone and hold up fairly well. Wood laminates need to be installed exactly as directed by manufacturer when installing in a bathroom. Be sure, at time of selection, your supplier knows this wood laminate will be installed in a bathroom. All laminates are not alike.

Vinyl flooring can be the least expensive depending on your selection. There are also some more expensive vinyls. Vinyl can be a good choice for a bathroom because it holds up well in the moist environment, and is easy to clean. Some of the newer vinyls are very attractive, feature texture, and are often hard to distinguish from real tile. Vinyl is also easy on the feet.

When you install new flooring materials in a bathroom, read what the manufacturer recommends for cleaning and for maintenance. I have conducted some mystery shopping, and gotten a lot of misinformation about the special needs of some of these materials. Good sales people know their product, and the there are the others …

There is such a wide variety of cleaning products today, and some of them very good. But they are not created for all surfaces. Do read the labels before applying a new cleaner. It may not be right for your bathroom flooring or surface.

Digital Camera – Capture Golden Moments

A digital camera, takes digital photographs on a light-sensitive sensor. Many cameras can also record sound and videos still still photographs. These can store thousands of images on a small memory space. The users can also edit the stored images. They can also delete the stored images. Deletion of stored images will free the device's memory which can then again be used for taking more photographs.

The digital cameras now-a-days are being incorporated into devices like mobile phones & personal digital assistants (PDAs) and vehicles. There are various types of digital cameras like video, line-scan, bridge and live-preview. The video cameras are further classified as camcorders, professional video cameras and web-cams. While a web-cam is attached to computers for video conference purposes, a camcorder is intended for the use of amateur photographers.

A Bridge camera often has a super-zoom lens that provides a very wide zoom range. These are often confused with digital SLR cameras as their appearance is similar to each other. Many of the Bridge cameras store images inloss-less RAW format. They are generally lighter that DSLR cameras and provide images of good quality. Most of the compact digital cameras store images in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) and Joint Photography Experts Group (JPEG) file formats. Some cameras also use formats like Design Rule for Camera Format (DCF), Digital Print Order Format (DPOF), and Exchangeable Image File Format (Exif).

Zoom camera lenses are designed as 3x, 4x, 5x etc. These designations refer to the ratio between the longest and shortest focal lengths. A larger zoom designation does not necessarily mean that the image can not be magnified any more. A zoom lens is one wherein a photographer can vary the focal length of the camera lens within a predefined range. The zoom lens allows users to achieve a variety of perspectives and compositions. These zoom lenses come handy when the user has to capture images of a dynamic subject matter like an athletics event.

Three Most Important Exercises To Lose Weight

Before you rush out to buy the latest exercise kit or gadget to lose weight you should consider the activities below. Practice them. I believe it will enable you lose weight like no other.

Being more active: Numerous studies has shown that if you take two people that eat exactly the same food at the same time, with one gaining weight while the other does not, more often than not the person that does not gain weight is living a more active lifestyle. An obese person for instance spends an average of 3 hours more daily in a chair than a slim person. Being more active means taking more steps in the day. You can get a pedometer and monitor how much you walk each day. If you are not walking at least 12,000 steps a day, find more ways to add steps to your day. You can adopt this by walking rather than taking the bus for short distances, climbing the stairs instead of the elevator, pacing around while talking on the phone. All these activities build up over time and make you lose weight without effort. If you do this consistently for thirty days, you will see the difference.

Walking: is the most natural of all exercises and has been undervalued in terms of its health-promoting and weight loss capabilities. Indeed the body is designed to walk. Research shows that slow rhythmic movement exercise resets the body's weight set point and creates a slim lean body. In order to achieve this you need to walk non-stop one hour every day, possibly first thing in the morning for at least one whole month. Your body will dramatically change if you do this.

Rebounding: This is a powerful exercise that reduces body fat. Rebounding allows you to stimulate and strengthen every cell of your body simultaneously. It is also hugely beneficial against disease like heart disease and diabetes and gives the body energy when it is tired. Gently jumping up and down for ten minutes a day stimulates the lymphatic system and increases your metabolism. The benefits of rebounding are simply outstanding.

Chimney Linings

BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE The nature of the chimney you have – or are proposing to build – is critical to the success of your wood burning stove.

If you are lucky enough to have a chimney that is completely enclosed within the house, then you have a potentially ideal situation. Not only will heat radiate around the house more effectively, the heat itself will be maximised because the chimney should not develop any cold spots.

Your stove relies on the creation of a balanced flue, where the heat up the chimney gradually and steadily reduces up to the chimney top. The higher pressure hot air is drawn up to the lower pressure ambient atmosphere. As nature abhors a vacuum, cool air flows downwards to equalise the pressure below and thus fans the flame.

Of course if your chimney is on an external wall, there’s little you can do to change the fact but you should then pay even more attention to the insulation of your flue.

Whether you are converting a brick or stone chimney, or using a new prefabricated lightweight structure like Versachimney (which can be very useful for installing stoves in difficult new builds or conversions), you cannot rely upon the chimney itself as the outlet for the stove.

A large aperture reduces the pressure of the upward gases. And there are myriad problems of tar build up, broken linings and blockages.

The correct installation uses a circular flue lining, matched to the stove outlet. Normally this is the same diameter as the stove outlet, from 6″ cases upwards. In most cases this will be made of stainless steel. The easiest to install, especially where there is any deflection from the vertical, is the flexible double-walled liner pack. The outer wall is corrugated to flex more easily and to resist crushing, and the inner skin is smooth for easy cleaning and to make moisture run down. Flexible systems come in the most popular sizes from 5″ to 10″ and the rigid smooth types run from 5″ to 8″.

Other parts are needed for the installation, including a rain cap in the form of some sort of ‘suspending cowl’ which in the best cases inhibits excessive downward airwash.

Where the flue passes through the roof there will be a top plate or some sort of flashing in heat-resisting rubber (avoid the low-temperature ones) plus a fixing kit to ensure there is no rain ingress.

A ventilation pack may be required in the chimney. This is made of heat-resistant high-impact UV stabilised polystyrene.

And down at the point where the chimney meets the room, there will be a stainless steel register plate which apart from finishing off the installation, holds in any insulation in the void of the chimney and prevents unwanted draughts.

Anti-Santa Installation

So what is in the chimney apart from the flue itself, and any internal supports?

Some installers maintain that modern double-wall flues are so efficient that they do not need further insulation. This is a moot point and the decision will be influenced by whether you have to use an outside wall chimney, and the size of the chimney cross-section.

On larger chimneys you can use a 30mm-section Rockwool-filled, aluminium-skinned sleeve which encircles the flue and is held together at joints with aluminium tape.

For smaller stacks the preferred material is the ‘Micafil’ brand, or generically Vermiculite, which can be in poured loose or used 1:1 as an aggregate with Portland cement to make an ultra-lightweight rigid fill. This amazing stuff does not burn, resists high temperatures and is an excellent insulator, but it would be expensive and wasteful to pour it into, say, a huge inglenook stack.

Those who have no existing chimneys should do their utmost to route the flue through the interior of the house, suitably shrouded, otherwise to create a new exterior casing for it wherever possible to avoid the benighted cold spot problem.

Hey, Good Lookin’ But what, you may ask, of the lovely vitreous enamel stove pipe that you have artfully matched to your freestanding stove?

This is the show-off of the flue world. It is pointless for built-in ‘cassette’ stoves where nothing is on display. As a single-skin tube that gets very hot, it is actively discouraged from being routed through a floor that might catch light and in practice it must only be used up to the point where it disappears from view. An adapter is then used to connect it to the double-walled stainless steel flue.

Having read thus far, you are probably concluding that this is the province of a professional, and indeed if you did it yourself or used an unqualified builder you would have to pay an application fee and go through the inspections of Buildings Control.

Whereas if you enlist a HETAS-certified engineer they will know how to deal with the above issues. At least now you can maybe have a more informed conversation with them.

Once the work is completed, ask your engineer for their Certificate of Completion so that you can wave it at any passing official; and make sure you know where the legally required statutory notice has been placed, telling anyone who asks (unlikely but who knows?) the technical details of your stove installation.

The Adventure of Peru

What an adventure to take off in an airplane and land in Peru! How many things I take for granted in my life!

o Like electricity; it was on in the jungle only from 5:30 pm until 10:00 pm.

o Like hot showers; we did have hot showers in Ollantaytambo on the third and fourth days and then on the fourth and fifth days in Aguas Calientes (one would hope so considering the name means "hot water" named for the hot springs).

o Like flushing toilet paper down the toilet (I thought that was why they called it toilet paper); the sewers in Peru are unable to deal with toilet paper so it goes in the waste basket next to the toilet.

o Like living at an altitude where I can easily get around; in Cusco, at over 11,000 feet elevation, my heart rate as I was sitting on the floor in the airport to conserve energy was the same as when I am doing aerobics at home.

o Like things being logical and able to be figured out; Machu Picchu was beyond figuring out how and why people made that incredible site so high up in the mountains.

o Like having the lane lines on the street actually mean something; the drivers use their horns and go where there is space (for me it was bumper car style without the bumps).

o Like the freedom to own property; one of the shamans we worked with in the jungle had his children threatened by a company wanting to take over his private land for logging.

o Like learning so many things from books; our tour guide in the jungle had learned so many things about the monkeys because he lived in the jungle.

We landed in Lima and the next day flew to Cusco at 11,300 feet. Immediately outside the airport terminal, there were vendors selling hats, dolls, and most importantly coca leaves and coca candy. Chewing the coca leaves apparently opens up the vascular system to allow one to more effectively adapt to the altitude. We arrived at the hotel to be served coca tea and to be sent to our rooms to rest and acclimate. I was easily convinced.

We met for a late lunch. Immediately outside the hotel doors were the throngs of vendors waiting for our group of about 40. Since we had name tags on, they were calling us by name. My desire for connection meant I was looking at these people and then engaging them. They then took my offering of connection as desire to buy. They locked on. I was mis communicating. I thought my intent was so clear! Luckily, at the restaurant we were given tips on communicating with vendors. "Maybe later" means you will buy from them when they see you again. They will search you out to find you. Looking at them with any interest engages them. I learned that lesson quickly. From then on it was, "No, gracias," unless I was interested.

We visited sacred sites in honor of the local celebration of the Seven Crosses. We headed to the Sacred Valley where we went to Moray (an amazing creation of terraced concentric circles that resembles a great stadium), Pisac (where we did some energizing exercises and a water ceremony on my birthday), and Ollantaytambo (where we did some night exercises which allowed us the chance to fully enjoy the brilliant stars and Milky Way without the contamination of electricity).

A train (where we sat in front of the large window and watched as the engineer honked at those on the track in front of us) took us to Aguas Calientes below Machu Picchu. Then a bus ride on the 14 switchbacks up the bumpy dirt road to the wonder of Machu Picchu. My questions swirled. How did they build this? What was the purpose to have it so high up? How many lived here? How long was it owned? What was life like? What was each part of purpose (everything seemed so intentional with all those likely cut stones and four foot thick walls)? What were the people like? After three days exploring Machu Picchu, my questions and awe only increased.

Back to Cusco, then to Puerto Maldonado and the jungle. The week in the jungle was serene. Life slowed. We explored internally and externally. At Eco Amazonia we met Elias. Just like the other workers there, Elias would serve food and then be our tour guide. The employees all did multiple tasks.

Off to Monkey Island. The island had various kinds of monkeys. There were the social varieties and those who live alone. Elias, now our guide, seemed to know all they monkeys. "Here comes a grumpy male. Be careful to keep him off your shoulders." "There is the female who bit me the other day." "There is the mother with her baby clinging to her." "She takes care of the baby for a year and then it is on its own." I could feel Elias' connection with the monkeys. Elias had lived in the jungle to learn and it showed. So different from learning about things from books. He had a passion and a connection.

There are more stories and learning. This is just a tidbit. Overall my trip to Peru bought me to a place of gratitude. I am grateful to live in this abundant world filled with many people and much life with what I am connected. And you are one of those people. Thank you.

Here’s the Secret to Cooking Healthy Rice, Without Oils & Additives

Rice is an excellent staple, well balanced in nutrients and nourishing in the body. Cooking healthy rice is quite simple but not many are aware of it. If you are choosing not-overly processed, non-enriched, unbleached rice, you are already halfway there; but unless you know this secret, there is no way you are cooking healthy rice. Curious? Don’t worry, I am just about to reveal it!

As much as choosing healthy ingredients is important for healthy cooking, equally important is the way we cook it. The problem with cooking rice is – the conventional ways of cooking involves using a metal/ceramic pot. This, unfortunately, makes your rice unhealthy in more than one way.

First of all, these metals and ceramics leach metal ions that react with nutrients in rice at the cooking temperature (heat is a catalyst) and make it toxic. Sounds unbelievable right? I felt the same until I did a home test on my then favorite rice cooker (a stainless-steel pan). The test is pretty simple, all you need is some baking soda and follow these steps:

  1. Boil 2-3 cups of water in any pot, when it starts boiling add 2 tsp of baking soda, boil for 5 more minutes. Turn stove off.
  2. Wait till cool enough to taste then taste the water (take a sip). If you taste metals, that’s what you’re eating! If water has a rubber/paint taste it’s the chemicals from enamel/glaze.

As a control, stir 2 tsp of baking soda to 1 glass of water and take a sip – you will taste just the baking soda.

It’s recommended that at least 80% of the food we eat be alkaline, the baking soda is also alkaline and so, closely resembles our food. If a pot is leaching metals into the alkaline baking soda solution, it will definitely leach while cooking food. This is the working principle for this test.

Secondly, the harsh heat from metals/ceramics dissolves delicate nutrients and makes your rice nutritionally depleted. This heat is also uneven and as a result, doesn’t distribute uniformly leaving rice either overcooked or unevenly cooked (one of the reasons grains do not look fluffy and separate from one another).

I did some research and came across this all-natural pure clay rice cooker and decided to give it a try. First thing I noticed about them after following the alkaline baking soda test is that they do not leach! Also, they don’t get heated too much and you can easily hold them mostly with bare hands or by using a kitchen cloth. The heat radiating from their walls is far-infrared heat. this heat penetrates deep into each grain, cooking them evenly and thoroughly, keeping nutrients intact.

The rice cooks soft, delicious and fluffy with just the right amount of moisture as the pot filters out excess water through semi-porous walls. No need for any artificial additives, fats or oils – the pot takes care of cooking that perfect rice for you. This is why I think it’s the ideal rice cooker.

Nevada Incorporation – Make Sure You Do It Right!

So you want to have Nevada incorporation? Well, it may be just what you want and need, or it could be a nightmare. It may very well be that Nevada incorporation is the right step for one company, and a misstep for the next. Besides the low cost for a Nevada incorporation, it provides owners with beneficial and unparallel asset privacy. The filing fee for Nevada incorporation is $ 125, and is more affordable than most states. Another advantage of Nevada incorporation is privacy of ownership and the absence of a state income tax.

Most companies do NOT qualify to take advantage of Nevada incorporation's benefits, so be sure that you check out the various requirements. Your resident corporation can maximize profits by taking advantage of the tax laws, and members of an LLC (owners) pay taxes on the income, yet have the advantage of limited liability as the shareholders of a corporation do. You can get every advantage used by big corporations at low cost which is one of the benefits of tax savings by a Nevada incorporation.

The state of Nevada has issued requirements for incorporation, primarily a maintenance test. In order to properly form a substantiated Nexus base in Nevada the following requirements should be met: (1) a compliant Nevada formed Corporation or LLC; 2 A Nevada office * (leased or owned) with physical and mailing address; (3) Nevada staff working in Nevada; (4) Nevada bank account; (5) Nevada phone number; (6) Nevada Business Registration; 7 Continuously maintain appropriate records, filings, and accountability. Anything less is a facade that requires home state registration and may negatively affect protection, privacy and tax advantages. A non-resident can have Nevada incorporation as long as he / she registers in their home state as well. This will generate additional filing fees; however, if you want total privacy, it might be worth it.

The benefits of Nevada incorporation are amazing! Numerous benefits are offered to existing and new businesses that incorporated in Nevada and they enjoy many benefits just not available anywhere else. For one, no tax upon shares of stock held by non-residents and no inheritance tax on non-resident holders. Pro-business Nevada, unlike almost every other state, has taken a stand! No Corporate Income Tax.

  • No Taxes on Corporate Shares
  • No Franchise Tax
  • No Personal income tax
  • No IRS Information Sharing Agreement

Nevada's corporate statutes started with those of Delaware and then went even further, establishing a corporate entity that allows investors and owners of Nevada corporations to remain off the public record – an advantage that is unique through the world. Since these statutes took effect in 1991, the number of new incorporations in Nevada has exploded. The bullet-proof protection inherent in Nevada corporations, however, takes it to a new level, making it virtually impossible for creditors and litigants to get at your hard-earned assets. That just might be the main reason there were over 40,000 partnerships in Nevada last year alone. It looks like more and more business-savvy people are discovering the tremendous advantages that complete protection offers! Unlike most other states, there has never been a case in which the corporate veil was pierced in Nevada, except in the instance of fraudulent activity. This means your personal assets receive maximum protection when separated from business activities by a Nevada corporation. Nevada's Supreme Court consistently stands strong on preserving this protection, even when a corporation fails to maintain basic corporate formalities (although we strongly recommend you do so).

Some other important benefits are a Nevada incorporation that can be organized with very little capital, if desired. Many states require that a corporation have at least $ 1,000 in capital. One person can hold the offices of President, Secretary, Treasurer, and be the sole Director. Many states require at least 3 officers and / or directors. Thus, there is no need to bring other persons into a Nevada corporation if the owner does not desire it. A corporation can be formed by mail, fax, or phone and the person incorporating in Nevada never has to visit the state, even to conduct annual meetings. Meetings can be held anywhere in the world at the option of the director (s).

No reciprocity with the IRS. Nevada is the only state in the union that does not share information with the Internal Revenue Service. Many tax professionals also believe that this reduces your chances of an audit because less matching of tax return information means fewer chances of something standing out.

We trust that this information on forming a Nevada incorporation has been helpful. We can not stress enough … get all of the facts and requirements for a Nevada incorporation, and contact a professional for advice in your particular situation. The purpose of this article is not to give you legal advice or recommendations, but to point out to you some of the requirements and caveats.

    Some Kitchen Lighting Design Tips

The kitchen today is the busiest room in the house and kitchen lighting is probably the most important element in kitchen interior design.

If you have any questions or need any questions, please let us know if you have any questions. The right kitchen lighting is able to create just the right atmosphere for entertaining.

Selecting just the right kitchen lighting can be a simple process. You first need to identify the main areas of the kitchen that need sufficient lighting. With specific tasks over the range or cook top, you can use an energy efficient fluorescent tube along with a standard range fan, or a recessed down light in the general area of the stove. One or two track lights over the sink area can provide the correct amount of illumination that would have been needed for washing dishes and scouring pots and pans.

For the sink, and countertops a combination of track or recessed lighting, and under cabinet lighting will be to achieve best results in lighting up the countertop and creating a work area that is well lit and free of shadows. Mount the lights as close to the back of the cabinets as possible to avoid creating glare and off the work surfaces. Try to select energy-efficient fluorescent fixtures that will cover at least two-thirds of the of the counter's length.

For the breakfast area a good overhead light is useful since this area is also frequently used for reading. For more kitchen lighting ideas you can consider such lighting systems as chandeliers to high-tech flexible track lighting with decorative pendants. With a dimmer switch these ceiling-hung fixtures will produce adequate task lighting for family activities. You can also lower the light for entertaining.

When considering kitchen lighting design it is important to create muliple layers of lighting including ambient lighting, accent lighting as well as decorative lighting.

Examine the amount of space and try to imagine the opportunities that you have in considering different categories of kitchen lighting design to create an inviting and livable space.

Ambient Lighting – This is the general light in the room. This type of kitchen lighting is needed for all casual activities. This can be achieved through the use of reflected light for different surfaces. An example of this is track lighting.

Task Lighting – An example is under-cabinet lights since they make excellent task lighting. This kind of kitchen lighting is commonly achieved with small light sources using higher and more focused levels of light with a combination of under cabinet lights and overhead lights that are strategically located. This type of lighting will be mostly found in closets, pantries, cabinets, or drawers.

Decorative Lighting – This type of kitchen lighting can add sophistication and color to a space.

Down Lighting – Down lighting is energy efficient and consist of small aperture cans in the ceiling. They can produce a longer lamp life, minimize glare and produce a bright crisp light.

Low Voltage Track and Mono Rail Lighting – These lighting systems can offer an interesting and more flexible type of lighting and are easy to install. They can be hand-bent and shaped to provide architectural interest. Low voltage lighting dims more easily and lights decorative objects and surfaces dramatically.

Feel Happy and Sad at the Same Time?

Did you know that it’s impossible to be stressed out and relaxed at the same time? Neither can you be happy and sad at the same time.

Of course, you can go back and forth, like an oscillating fan. But let’s consider what happens when we focus our energy on one predominant emotion.

Have you ever watched an oscillating fan in action? It blows cool air to one side of the room, and then slowly rotates to the other side.

Our emotions can be like that, oscillating back and forth. Sometimes, we have a “love-hate” relationship. We love someone, but we also hate certain things about them. However, the brain always suspends one emotion while expressing the other.

The reason this happens is because of a protective mechanism in the brain. Isn’t that amazing? Our brain attempts to protect us from getting confused, disoriented or shutting down due to “analysis paralysis.”

The good news is that we can use our brain’s protection mechanism to our advantage. Instead of feeling angry, sad or afraid– we can feel happy, smile and hold our head high.

Perhaps we take a moment to distract ourselves. We think about something that made us laugh or warmed our heart. Or maybe we whisper a quick prayer, thanking God for being in control of our lives, and working in the midst of a difficult situation.

Of course, there are times when we need to express negative emotions, such as sadness, grief, frustration or anger. It normal and healthy to express these feelings. However, it can become disempowering if our feelings make us miserable, sap our energy and strength, or spiral into despair.

Consider for a moment what happens when you’re struggling with negative emotions, but you stop to let go of them… and smile. At first, you feel some tension from the competing emotions. Your brain is wrestling with your feelings. Which feelings will you give into?

Suppose you keeping on smiling. What happens then? Your negative emotions are pushed aside and scattered to the wind. They may not be completely gone, but they are temporarily suspended.

Whenever we let go of negative emotions, we’re able to think more clearly. We have the energy that we need to recover, let go, heal and get on with our lives. Now we can

think clearly and decide what to do next. There is tremendous power in letting go and releasing tension from the mind and body.

Sometimes, it is hard to smile in the midst of a stressful situation. However, the simple act of lifting up the corners of your mouth, will help you to reverse the direction of the fan. Instead of fanning the flames of anger, sadness and fear– and making those coals even hotter– you turn to the other side. By letting go, you activate feelings of calm, energy and emotional release.

Consider the power of your smile. When we let go of tension and anxiety, we stay on the road to less stress.

Why Bamboo Flooring Will Save the World

There is little question our natural resources and global environment is in trouble. Even with the growing awareness of the problem and changes to our lifestyles, the environmental problems continue to grow. Natural resources are disappearing faster than they can be replenished. Fossil fuels are disappearing at an astonishing rate, and the hole in the ozone layer is growing larger.

Fortunately, I'm not entirely convinced the world will come crashing down around us. I for one have faith that the earth will be saved by an unsuspected hero. I'm positive that bamboo flooring (with our help, of course) will save the world.

    Bamboo Flooring – A Savior?

While it's illegally that flooring made from bamboo can compete with global emission laws or new forms of worldwide energy, it can make a fundamental impact on a global scale. Here's how:

Bamboo floors are made from trash that is usually burned. By not burning the bamboo stalks infringing on fields, bamboo flooring is saving a bit of the ozone layer. By using materials that grow quickly enough to be considered weeds in the first place, bamboo floors are saving timber forests that take decades to replenish. Keeping fields clear of excess bamboo also allows farmers to focus on growing crops to feed world populations.

The manufacturing process is relatively clean. The process to create bamboo flooring is much cleaner than that of hardwood or laminate flooring. There are few chemicals to treat the raw materials and few toxins are released into the air during the actual manufacturing process.

The product lifespan is extensive. Bamboo flooring lasts beautifully for decades in a home with relatively little maintenance. This means not only are floor varnishes and toxic finishes or cleaning products not polluting the air, old carpet that you never needed are not winding up in the city dump either.

    Saving the Big Stuff

You may feel this is all well and good, but there are bigger problems for our planet than a few rather full landfills. Flooring made from bamboo might not be an all encompassing solution to the world's problems, but it does make a difference. While it would be great if a floor solution could change the world, it is improbable if not impossible for one thing to save the environment. That is no reason to give up hope, however.

Every small contribution we make to save our planet is a step in the right direction. Bamboo flooring is a major investment. By installing it instead of stone cut from a strip min operation or carpet that will wind up in a landfill someday, you'll have made a critical impact, however small, on our struggling planet. Sometimes those small impacts will combine to make dramatic changes.

Beside, if everyone had bamboo flooring, we would not have problems with emissions or fossil fuel depletion. Nobody would be on the roads – they'd all be at home admiring just how beautiful their new bamboo flooring looks.

The Important Benefits of Using Slate in Your Basement

If you are looking for a durable and beautiful way to finish your foundation, but are worried about the mold and water level problems that can arise in this space, natural slate may be the perfect building material for you. Found and quarried in mountains around the world, this layered stone has been used in architectural designs for millennia. Highly durable, and available in a variety of colors, slate has several properties which allow it to avoid the problems other materials will run into many basics, without sacrificing the beauty and color that you deserve in your space.

The water table is the level underground, below which the soil is completely Saturated.

In some places the water table will be extremely low, while in others, such as swamps or islands, it may be almost at ground level. The level of the water can change due to wet or dry weather, and can in some circumstances rise above the floor of your basement, flooding your subterranean refuge. If you are located in an area where this is a common event, or even one in which severe weather can potentially cause this to happen, then you are limited by the building materials you can use in your basement. This is an important matter to consider when planning your foundation, as some applications such as wood or carpet flooring can be completely destroyed by a single flood event.

Slate is naturally resistant to the problems of mold and warping that are caused by wet environments. This durability can be enhanced with a few simple conclusions such as the application of a chemical sealer which will clog the pores of the stone, making them impervious to water infiltration. You also have the option of reapplying these chemical sealants on a yearly basis in order to preserve the original colors in the stone, although it is usually not necessary. Slate tend to take care of itself, and last very well on its own, even when subject to repeated floods.

Aside from its natural resistance, slate also has stylistic properties that make it desirable in this kind of environment. The appearance of natural stone fits very well into most basement environments, contrasting dark and often rustic interiors with a material that is stark and primitive in its innate beauty. Slate has a power to it, an inner strength which allows it to cooperate with and enhance the existing style in most basement designs.

Further, slate is available in a wide variety of colors, and can even be multicolored. This occurs when the various layers that make up the material form in different hues, which then contend with one another in the surface of the stone, often creating wild and vibrant, typically occurring displays of color. The chaos of this formation makes every piece of multicolored slate different from every other, and gives you more then a palette, but a whole arsenal of unique portraits with which to design your space.

The durability and resilience to moisture which is a trademark of slate makes it the perfect match for basement flooring and construction. These properties are important when working with a space that may be prone to occasional or regular flooding. However precautions do not have to come at the expensive of appearance, as slate is available in a wide variety of colors and multicolor, which give you the freedom to create a look which is entirely unique to you.
