Characterization in "A Lesson Before Dying"

Characterization is one of the centerpieces of Ernest Gaines’ novel A Lesson Before Dying. It is clear that Mr. Gaines devoted a great deal of time to the development of the central characters in this novel. He also gave considerable development to some of the minor characters in the story. I think one of the reasons the story is so compelling is that the authors’ character development is thorough. The characters are people that you like and respect such as Vivian Baptiste, characters you feel empathy for such as Jefferson’s godmother Miss Emma, and characters that you sometimes love and sometimes hate such as Grant Wiggins.

The major characters such as Grant Wiggins and Vivian Baptiste are well developed round characters as are some of the minor characters such as Louis Washington, Jr. Although, Louis Washington, Jr. a static character is in the story primarily as foil for Mr. Wiggins and the other students, Mr. Gaines still provides some information about his background helping to round out his character. Louis Washington, Jr. could have been simply left as a one dimensional flat character and would still have served his purpose (foil) well. However, the author shows that he decided well rounded characters were going to be a centerpiece to his novel when he shares with the reader this information found on page fifty-five of the novel: “He was without a doubt the worst child in the school. He came from a large family–thirteen, fourteen, fifteen: I don’t know how many–and he had to fight for every crumb of food he got.” Mr. Gaines in sharing that information is giving the reader some insight into the psyche of Louis Washington, Jr. which helps the reader understand some of the behavioral problems of the character that happen later in the story..

Grant Wiggins serves as the stories Protagonist. As the narrator of the story we see the story through his eyes and through his frame of reference. Grant Wiggins is a very complex character. He is a man torn between his desire to escape the racism and oppression of the Deep South, yet we get a sense that internally he believes that he can make a difference in the lives of the children that he teaches. Throughout the story he tries to convince Vivian and thus himself that she is the reason he stays on the plantation. She instinctively knows better and tries to get him to admit that there are other reasons that he stays on the plantation besides her. Conflict is all around Grant Wiggins- at home, at work, and even in his love life. He is in conflict with his Aunt whom he obviously loves and respects and what he views as her attempts to control and interfere with his life. In the beginning of the story he is torn between giving two elderly women their wishes that he visit and help Jefferson and the fact that doing so puts him directly in the path of the racism and bigotry that he has strived to avoid. He feels compelled to help others and on numerous occasions he shows a great deal of concern for others. Twice at Mr. Pichots’ home even though he felt humiliated and embarrassed for the treatment he received he still tried to make the situation bearable for Inez’s sake. He suffered the humiliation of being searched and rudely spoken to at the jail for the sake of honoring his Aunts and Miss Emma’s request and for Jefferson..

The antagonist in the story is clearly the environment and setting of the story-the Deep South. It is very clear Grant is in conflict with the institutions, policies, and discriminating culture of Louisiana and plantation life. Grant is constantly evaluating his reason for being on the plantation and his reasons for being a teacher there. He has flashbacks of his days as a child on the plantation and his time as a student in the very same church that he now teaches in. He sees as an adult that life on the plantation does not seem to change from generation to generation. He remembers a conversation that he had with his old teacher that he went to visit. During the conversation recalled on page sixty four his former childhood teacher says to him, “You’ll see that it’ll take more than five and a half months to wipe away–peel -scrape away the blanket of ignorance that has been plastered and replastered over those brains in the past three hundred years.” It is obvious that Grant knows there is some truth to that statement and he is torn between fleeing the plantation and living elsewhere where there is a possibility that he could have a better life for himself. However he cannot leave people that need his help. He stays on the plantation with his aunt because he feels an obligation to do so. He continues to teach and though he feels certain many of the students will end up dead or in prison like so many of his classmates did. Further when his Aunt and Miss Emma approach him with their plans for him to help Jefferson he actually resists very little..

The story is a powerful story of hope and inspiration because of the characters within it. The amount of background information that we receive about the characters gives them life and whether we like or dislike them we feel as though as they were living breathing people. I am sure that many readers of this story will feel the pain of Miss Emma, the conflicting emotions running through Grant Wiggins and the tension of life in the Quarter.

Evolution of Telephone – The Journey From the First Telephone to VoIP Phone

Nobody is ignorant from the fact that the first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in March 1876. That is where the telecommunications field of modern times takes its roots from.

This invention would perhaps not have gathered much attention, which Bell’s weak expectations said, but it was the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, where Brazil’s Emperor Dom Pedro de Alcantara took notice of this rather interesting manmade invention. He could not help but be amazed by bell’s profound creativity, which reflected in his creation the telephone.

In the early days, telephone was only seen as a luxury of life rather than a commodity. It only gained more popularity as an essential medium of communication at the time when many corporate and government offices began to use it.

During the 1880’s, when metallic circuits were introduced, they took over long distance communications. However, for a decade, its usage remained restricted to a certain class who could afford paying for the heavy calling expenses. Until in the 1890’s, with the emergence of party line, it became convenient for people living in rural areas in particular to divide the cost of the line used by many.

Prior to 1891, calls were made by exchange operators, but until a new system for direct dialing system. Then there it was putting telephone to its best use in 1927, when the first transatlantic phone call was made with the help of radio waves. It was the throughout the time of First and Second World War, when telephone went through a major developmental period, all thanks to the huge expenditures made by the Defense Department for ensuring safer communication across. These series of advancements also led to the creation of the first mobile telephone system, which easily connected mobile vehicles to phones using radio waves.

Initially introduced models seemed slightly bigger and commonly used by those who were used to stay in touch by two-way radio communication mode. Mill End Fly Lines – The Bargain of the Fly Fishing World

When browsing through a fishing tackle website or catalog you may well have come across ‘Mill End’ fly lines being sold at very low prices. Originally, these would have been short bits of fly lines left over at the end of a manufacturing run and sold off cheap as they would not be the normal 30 yards in length and might have minor defects. These mill end fly lines were often a great bargain as you could get a slightly shorter version of an expensive fly line at a fraction of the full lines cost.

Nowadays, the term ‘mill end’ is often used as a generic name for very low cost, unbranded fly lines that are only tested to a fairly basic quality level. There is usually no manufacturers name given and they’re normally supplied loose in tied coils with no boxes or packaging.

The good thing about these mill end fly lines is that they turn out to be exactly what many people who are new to fly fishing or have a tight budget are looking for. Low cost fly lines that have been made under tight cost control with no money spent on expensive branding and packaging. Modern manufacturing means they’re usually well made with few, if any, defects and they can be surprisingly good to use and cast.

Mill end fly lines do tend to be slightly shorter than full length fly lines, typically only 27 yards instead of the usual 30 yards and won’t be made from the latest durable and slick materials that are used on the best fly lines. I’ve been fly fishing for over 30 years and much of the advice I’ve seen on mill end fly lines is along the lines of ‘they’re cheap, not much good and won’t last long’. Well I have to say I disagree with this. I still use a sinking mill end fly line that I bought over 20 years ago. It casts well and I’ve caught many of my best fish on it. My son has recently started fly fishing too and his setup includes a floating mill end fly line that has surprised me at how good it is. I have to say that in my experience, as long as your expectations are not too high, then mill end fly lines are truly the bargain of the fly fishing world.

UPS Cable Sizing & Installation

Whatever cable is selected it must be capable of continually carrying the currents required by the loads. This is referred to as a cable’s full thermal current rating. Incorrect specification of cables can result in prolonged operation beyond its designed temperature rating, which can cause premature failure, or at worst, a potential fire risk.

The current calculating capability of a cable is determined by calculating the maximum current (Iz) required and the ac supply rating. This calculation is based upon several factors including the design current (Ib) of the circuit and the maximum input rating of the UPS that is to be installed, the nominal rating of each of the protective devices (In) and the cable rating (It). Cable rating is the value of current for a particular conductor located within a specific environment.

The current carrying capability of non-armoured, multi-core cables (with thermoplastic PVC or thermosetting insulation) can be affected by location. Current carrying capability reduces under load due to reduced heat dissipation. For example, a three or four-core 10mm cable enclosed within an insulated wall, the maximum current carrying capability is reduced to 39A. In free air, current carrying capability would increase to 60A because heat from the cable is more easily dissipated.

It is also important to calculate voltage drop based on the length of the cable and quantity of current passing through it at full operating load. The greater the load or distance, the greater the voltage drop. Wiring regulation standards (in the UK BS EN 7671 IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition) throughout the world specify requirements that must be met for acceptable levels of voltage drop and so forth.

Other factors to consider when sizing and installing cables in uninterruptible power supply installations are Earth fault loop impedance; operating current (Ia); ambient temperature; thermal insulation (Ci) and grouping (Cg).

Earth Fault Loop Impedance

As part of the electrical installation of an uninterruptible power supply it is important to calculate this value as it must satisfy regulations. An acceptable value will also ensure the necessary fault current will be generated should a fault condition or short-circuit occur. Once the level of fault current has been calculated, it can be checked against the time curve of the protective device to ensure it will trip appropriately if necessary.

Operating Current (Ia)

Operating current is the current required to trip the chosen protective device within the required operating time during a fault condition.

Ambient Temperature (Ca)

As already highlighted, ambient temperature around the installed cables must be considered to ensure, during operation, that they do not overheat and can dissipate heat effectively. This is especially important where there are high ambient temperatures and/or direct heat sources such as radiators or heaters.

Thermal Insulation (Ci)

When cables are installed in an insulated location, that insulation will restrict the cable from effectively dissipating heat and that should be borne in mind in any electrical installation.

Grouping (Cg)

Heat dissipation will also be compromised when several cables are grouped together within one location. It is inevitable, particularly in new or purpose-built installations, that there is a necessity for this to happen. As long as all the above are taken into consideration and accurate calculations made, grouping can be put into effect in many installations.

What is the most important concern a buyer has when looking for a new ATV or motorcycle accessory? Fitment. Afterall, if an accessory or part doesn’t fit your bike, its nearly useless! It also provides a great risk – not all installation instructions or boxes clearly say what an accessory fits, so a buyer also risks damaging the product trying to install it. However, every box an item comes in from the powersports industry should have a part number, usually the manufacturer’s part number (MPN) (though sometimes the distributor has their own). Whats so important about that tiny little number? Its the key to every bit of information of your new product.

The MPN is important in several aspects of your journey in buying a new bike accessory. A wonderful thing about most shopping websites is that most require an item’s MPN to be posted. If you come across an E-bay listing in which the item claims to be a certain brand, particularly an OEM brand, if you do not see the MPN somewhere, use caution! When you buy an item, the MPN/SKU on the invoice should generally match the MPN on the listing, and the MPN/SKU on the invoice should also match the MPN on the item’s packaging when you receive it. It never hurts to cross reference an MPN on the manufacturer’s website with the MPN on a listing. You can double check the fitment and any other items required for installation.

However, an MPN is not just a simple key – its a foreign word. Its a coded number and every manufacturer has their own code, but with a bit of research and some basic understanding of how MPN’s are sometimes coded can help you make sure you are getting what you intend to.

Some MPN’s are a random string of numbers and letters. I have found this common with Arctic Cat OEM products, Dynatek, and a few other brands. H stands for Honda, 400EX stands for the model, S stands for slip-on, A stands for Aluminum, R stands for Round (vs Elliptical), and C2 for Color – Black Chrome. Just by looking at the HMF MPN, you can figure out exactly what that item is and every variance. Other MPNs have strings of numbers or letters for each model or type of an item. Pro Armor, Suzuki and Kawasaki do this as well for most of their items.

Here are a few tips to summarize how to utilize MPNs to your advantage:

  1. If there isn’t an MPN posted in a listing, ask for one. If a seller can’t provide an MPN, then chances are, they might not know what they are selling. This is common with surplus e-commerce stores.
  2. Cross reference the MPN with the manufacturer’s website – most manufacturers can be found by a simple Google search. If the manufacturer’s don’t allow a search by MPN, call them! Its rare that a manufacturer’s customer service isn’t courteous and helpful when looking for an item. With the cross reference, double-check the fitment and color, and look for any additional information such as other required items for installation and warranty.
  3. Use the MPN to look for other listings that may be cheaper or have better policies.
  4. Make sure the MPN’s match between the listing, the invoice, and the packaging. Sometimes a distributor or a seller will have their own SKU – thats okay, just double-check with them to make sure it is the right item for the MPN you ordered.

This especially holds true, I have found, in negotiations. If there is a certain tautness about you, and you hold your head up and spine straight, people will find it very difficult to summon the gumption to bleed you for concessions.

If standard parameters do not serve your specific application, then working with a manufacturer that can customize the operating characteristics, size and other attributes to your needs will be necessary. 2.    Insulation Type (Liquid-Filled or Dry Type)

While there is still debate on the relative advantages of the available types of transformers, there are some performance characteristics that have been accepted:

o    Liquid-filled transformers are more efficient, have greater overload capability and longer life expectancy.

o    Liquid-filled units are better at reducing hot-spot coil temperatures, but have higher risk of flammability than dry types.

o    Unlike dry type units, liquid-filled transformers sometimes require containment troughs to guard against fluid leaks.

Dry type units are usually used for lower ratings (the changeover point being 500kVA to 2.5MVA). Placement is also a crucial consideration here; will the unit be indoors serving an office building/apartment, or outdoors serving an industrial load? Higher-capacity transformers, used outdoors, are almost always liquid-filled; lower capacity, indoor units are typically dry types. Dry types typically come in enclosures with louvers, or sealed; varnish, vacuum pressure impregnated (VPI) varnish, epoxy resin or cast resin are the different types of insulation used.

Liquid-filled types: choice of filler material

The choice of filler material is usually based on factors that include temperature rating of the transformer, mechanical strength of the coils, dielectric strength of the insulation, expansion rate of the conductors under various loads, and resistance to thermal shock of the insulation system.

Liquid-filled types: temperature considerations

Using fluid both as an insulating and a cooling medium, liquid-filled transformers have rectangular or cylindrical forms when constructing the windings. Spacers are utilized between the layers of windings to allow the fluid to flow and cool the windings and core.

Within the sealed tank that holds both core and coils, the fluid flows through ducts and around coil ends, with the main heat exchange taking place in external elliptical tubes. For transformers rated over 5 MVA, radiators (headers on the top and bottom) are used for additional heat transfer. Modern paper insulation in liquid-filled units allows a 65ºC average winding temperature rise.

Dry type: temperature considerations

Dry type insulation provides dielectric strength and ability to withstand thermal limits. Temperature rise ratings are typically 150 ºC, 115 ºC, and 80 ºC, based on the class of insulation used (see box).

3.    Choice of Winding Material

Transformers use copper or aluminum for windings, with aluminum-wound units typically being more cost-effective. Copper-wound transformers, however, are smaller – copper is a better conductor – and copper contributes to greater mechanical strength of the coil. It is important to work with a manufacturer that has the capability and experience to work with either material to suit your specific requirement.

4.    Use of Low-Loss Core Material

Core choice is a crucial consideration, and core losses should be determined properly. Losses that occur in the core are due to hysteresis and eddy currents. High quality magnetic steel should be used so that hysteresis losses are reduced; laminated cores are chosen to minimize eddy current losses.

5.    Protection from Harsh Conditions

It is very important that transformer core, coils, leads and accessories are properly protected, especially when used in harsh environments. Liquid-filled transformers should be of sealed-type construction, automatically providing protection for the internal components. For highly corrosive conditions, stainless steel tanks can be employed. Some approaches to building dry-type transformers for harsh environments include cast coil units, cast resin units, and vacuum pressure encapsulated (VPE) units, sometimes using a silicone varnish. Unless the dry-type units are completely sealed, the core/coil and lead assemblies should be periodically cleaned, even in non-harsh environments, to prevent dust and other contaminant buildup over time.

6.    Insulators

Dry-type transformers normally use insulators made from fiberglass-reinforced polyester molding compounds. These insulators are available up to a rating of 15kV and are intended to be used indoors or within a moisture-proof enclosure. Liquid-filled transformers employ insulators made of porcelain. These are available in voltage ratings exceeding 500kV. Porcelain insulators are track resistant, suitable for outdoor use, and easy to clean.

High-voltage porcelain insulators contain oil impregnated paper insulation, which acts as capacitive voltage dividers to provide uniform voltage gradients. Power factor tests must be performed at specific intervals to verify the condition of these insulators.

7.    Regulation

The difference between the secondary’s no-load voltage and full-load voltage is a measure of the transformer’s regulation. Poor regulation means that as the load increases, the voltage at the secondary terminals drops substantially.

8.    Voltage Taps

Even with good regulation, the secondary voltage of a transformer can change if the incoming voltage changes. Transformers, when connected to a utility system, are dependent upon utility voltage; when utility operations change or new loads are connected to their lines, the incoming voltage to your facility may decrease, or even perhaps increase.

To compensate for such voltage changes, transformers are often built with load tap changers (LTCs), or sometimes, no-load tap changers (NLTCs). (LTCs operate with the load connected, whereas NLTCs must have the load disconnected.) These devices consist of taps or leads connected to either the primary or secondary coils at different locations to supply a constant voltage from the secondary coils to the load under varying conditions.

9.    Life Expectancy

It is commonly held that the useful life of a transformer is the useful life of the insulation system. Insulation life is directly proportional to the temperatures being experienced by the insulation across operation. Winding temperatures vary, and hot spots at a maximum of 30ËsC above average coil winding temperature are usually acceptable for dry-type transformers. Hot spot temperatures are estimated by calculating the sum of the maximum ambient temperature, the average winding temperature rise, and the winding gradient.

Transformers typically have a ‘nameplate’ kVA rating, and this represents the amount of kVA loading that will result in the rated temperature rise under standard operating conditions. When used in these ‘standard operating conditions’, including the accepted hot-spot temperature with the correct insulation class, a ‘normal’ transformer life expectancy can be estimated.

10.    Overloading

Operating conditions can sometimes necessitate overloading of a transformer; and what this overloading means to the unit, in terms of what it can withstand without developing problems or faults is an important consideration. A primary issue is heat and its dissipation.

For example, if a transformer is overloaded to a factor of 20% above its rated kVA for a certain period of time, any heat developed in the coils may be easily transferred to the outside of the transformer tank depending on the period of overload. If this heat transfer occurs, then the chances of a fault occurring are small; but there is clearly a time period beyond which the transformer cannot continue to be in the overloaded condition; heat can start to build up internally within the unit and cause serious problems, leading eventually to a fault and a possible power outage. Heat dissipation issues are often addressed with built-in fans, thus augmenting the load capability of the transformer as well.

11.    Insulation Level

The insulation level of a transformer is based on its basic impulse level (BIL). The BIL can vary for a given system voltage, depending upon the amount of exposure to system over voltages a transformer might be expected to encounter over its lifecycle. If the electrical system in question includes solid-state controls, the selection of BIL should be done very carefully. These controls when operating chop the current, and may cause voltage transients.

12.    Shielding

A transformer’s ability to attenuate electrical noise and transients is an important consideration, especially when dealing with particular types of load. The application of a shield between the primary and secondary coils of a distribution transformer is often accomplished when solid state equipment such as computers and peripherals are being served.

13.    Placing Transformers Near the Load

Minimizing the distance between the unit and the principal load is clearly beneficial in several ways – apart from reducing energy loss and voltage drops, it also brings down the cost of secondary cabling. The downside here is that any placement of high-voltage equipment requires very close scrutiny of electrical and fire safety issues. A suitable balance can be achieved by using units that are pre-approved or permitted by insurance companies.

14.    Accessories

An added cost, accessories are installed when required. Examples include stainless steel tanks and cabinets for extra corrosion protection, special paint/finishes for corrosive atmospheres and ultraviolet light, weather shields for outdoor units, protective provisions for humid environments; rodent guards, temperature monitors, space heaters to prevent condensation during prolonged shutdown, optional location of openings for primary and secondary leads, tap changing control apparatus, and more.

No matter what she says, shake your head like it’s a no-no. Now you say, ‘Alright, what about the farmer?’ It’s important to word it just like this. Don’t ask her if there’s a farmer. Say, ‘What about the farmer?’ Again, it doesn’t matter what she says.

After she answers that question, you use the Strawberry Fields test to analyze her. Tell her, ‘The fence is your goals and aspirations. You set the bar high but not so high you can’t achieve it. That’s a good thing.

‘The strawberries are how much you like to have sex, and you said four. There’s no way I’d take you home to mom. Most people say only one or two. I’m a little scared about what you’d do to me.’

You exaggerate this part and say something like, ‘Some girls say they’d only take a little bite of one strawberry!’ Play around with it a little bit.

Finally, tell her, ‘The farmer is what you think about society’s rules and restrictions on sex and sexual behavior.’ Girls usually answer about that farmer one of two things.
