Acoustical Ceiling Paint Manufacturers – Picking One

Just about every paint manufacturer produces a ceiling paint product. But that does not mean that every paint manufacturer offers a product that is appropriate for application to acoustical surfaces. Conventional paints are not the same as an acoustical coating and few manufacturers include such an item in their product line. But the right product does exist and it is available at the local level. It just takes a little research and knowing what to look for along the way.

The pivotal word here is “acoustical.” With few exceptions, ceiling white latex paints on the market will have a negative affect on the surface’s ability to absorb sound. The acoustical characteristic is in essence, the ability to absorb sound and to decrease the likelihood of sound waves “bouncing” off the ceiling creating, what is often referred to as, an “echo chamber.”

Every acoustical product has built into its surface, crevices, holes, and textures that redirect the sound waves and/or allow them to pass through to a highly absorbent material under the surface. A perfect example is the conventional acoustical ceiling tile which has a soft core and a coated perforated surface that allows sound to pass through. Conventional paint products tend to “bridge” or close up these perforations, thus restricting the ability of sound waves to pass through. This bridging characteristic is what causes the window to be left stuck to the window sill after having been painted. The paint bridged, or spanned that crack forming a film that once dry, left the two surfaces stuck together.

Therefore, acoustical coatings have as a major distinction a “non-bridging” characteristic that does not allow any space to be spanned by the coating material. Another advantage of such a product is that it can be applied (sprayed usually) on the entire ceiling surface and yet after it has dried, the ceiling tiles are not stuck to the supporting grid system. Of course, acoustical coatings used to restore aged/discolored ceilings have unique features other than “non-bridging.”

The question is where one may go to find such a product if it is not available at the neighborhood paint store. An excellent place to begin is on the internet surfing under “Acoustical Ceiling Restoration.” When a ceiling is restored it should appear and perform like a new ceiling or as close to it as possible. And this requires products designed specifically for this type of an application. Here, there will be more than one product described. The next challenge is to choose one manufacturer over the other and to do so require more effort than simply comparing cost.

The old adage of “talk is cheap” holds here as well. It is easy to make product claims in fancy brochures or displayed on web sites. So how does a person choose one over another? The following should help.

– Testing: There are five major tests that are conducted by independent laboratories, using appropriate ASTM protocols, on this type of product. They are acoustical, fire retardancy, light reflectance, toxicity, and aging. As an example, the acoustical test determines what actual affect, if any, is detected as a result of the coating material being applied. Unless independent laboratory test results are available to confirm the product claims, buyers beware.

– Availability: Does the manufacturer make the product available through local dealers who can provide technical assistance as well? Legitimate product dealers will not represent a product that is not equally legitimate. Their concern is that their reputation is at stake, should the product not perform as advertised.

– Established: Few companies who offer poor products or services remain in business for long periods of time. The economy has its ups and downs and only the strong firms have the base that allows them to ride out the challenging times. Also, the longer a firm has been in business the more they have learned and the more likely it is that they will have the technical answer when the problem situation arises.

In summary, only an acoustical coating should be used on an acoustical surface and not all paint manufacturers produce such a product. Manufacturers who produce products to be used in the field of Acoustical Ceiling Restoration are to be sought out through the internet or by referral from a knowledgeable source. In order to distinguish between one manufacturer and another, one should determine that five major tests have been performed on the product by an independent laboratory and that the results support all product claims. The product should be available locally through a legitimate dealer and the manufacturer should have been in business long enough to have a proven track record.

Trees? True Story

This is a true story. One that taught me a little bit about my communication skills.

My youngest son and I had a conversation (over 26 years ago) when he was about 5 years old.

He had received a toy for his birthday that was battery powered. One of those little Remote Control Trucks. After playing with it for a while the battery ran down so we had to put it on the charger.

While it was being re-charged he and I talked. I told him "When I was little, like you, there were not Remote Control Cars and Trucks to play with." And he asked "What did you play with Daddy?" so I began to tell him.

I told him about my Sand Box, I had built him one and he had spent many hours in it and he also enjoyed climbing on a small tree we had in the back yard.

Anyways, I began to describe the toys I had back then. My favorite were the ones I could take outside to my sand box. Nothing technologically shocking but to me they were fantastic. They were called Tonka Toys and I still remember the joy of playing with the Bulldozer and the Crane. Those he could understand because I had bought him a few Tonka Toys and similar products for him to use in his sand box.

Then I talked about the games we had … card games like Go Fish and Memory. I also said a few words about the games Grown-ups played with "real" cards and board games like Monopoly.

I told him we did not have games like Nintendo of the Sony Play Station. Also the TV was only black and white. I showed him a picture in the newspaper that was black and white when he asked what that meant.

We talked about playing ball, "hide and seek", and "Your It" type of games with other kids too. Plus I explained that I did not get to play in the snow because where I lived when I was little it never snowed. He liked playing in the snow so that seemed amazing to him … that I never got to play in snow. I was raised in Florida.

Any, after about 30 minutes of us talking he looked up at me with an almost sad expression (I can still see that look on his face) and asked "Daddy, did you have trees back then?"

I laughed and said "Yes, we had trees." Then I explained that there was not one in my yard and I was not supposed to leave my yard so I did not get to climb a tree like he had in his yard. A look of relief came over his face and then we put the charged battery in his truck and played with technology again.

Now, every time I see a "blank" look on someone's face when I say something, when I did not communicate clearly enough for some reason, in my mind's eye, I see that little face and hear the words … "Daddy , did you have trees back then? "

Non-Profits Organization – Releases From Restrictions – Accounting

Accounting is usually boring and non-dramatic, except when accountants are faced with releases from restrictions when dealing with non-profits. This is when you see accounting types, such as CPAs and auditors, especially those with no non-profit background, laughing a bit too nervously. Blame it all on FASB 117!

“Net assets released from restrictions” (NARFR) is not just one account. You have these accounts in all the net assets or funds. Basically these accounts are part of a FASB 117 mechanism to decrease temporarily restricted net assets, since most if not all expenses are presented in the unrestricted fund.

For example, you received a donation of $5,000 to be used for a program happening in the following year.

Debit Cash-Temp Restricted 5,000

Credit Revenue- Temporarily Restricted- 5,000

Next year comes up and now you can use that money for expenses. Money kept in separate account may be transferred. Three journal entries may be created:

Debit Cash-Unrestricted 5,000

Credit Cash- Temp Restricted 5,000

Debit Expense- Unrestricted 5,000

Credit Cash- Unrestricted 5,000

Debit NARFR- temporarily restricted- 5,000

Credit NARFR- unrestricted – 5,000

When the organization doesn’t follow this setup and at year-end it needs to convert to FASB 117, things can get confusing. Usually accountants sum up all expenses showing up as restricted and use that number for NARFR.

Year end reports may be prepared in a different style than regular books. Many non-profits do that because it is easier to understand expenses as part of each temporarily fund, rather then to show NARFR entries. You can compile a year-end report and leave the books as they are. That way, the NARFRs show up only at reporting level.

*** The NARFR accounts ALWAYS zero out and have a zero impact in the organization’ s financial statements seen in consolidated form. It ALWAYS increases one net assets and decreases another for the same amount.

Selling a Business – Some Harvest Issues

Entrepreneurs generally avoid thinking about harvest issues and issues related to selling a business. Not many companies even have a formal plan for harvesting. Selling a business is usually viewed as an abandonment of the company; or else an entrepreneur is driven to sell business when the possibility of losing the entire company looms large over him. But, as many far-thinking entrepreneurs have demonstrated, selling at the right time can be a strategic move, instead of a last ditch effort to avoid bankruptcy.

The possibility of being forced to sell a company generally arises when an entrepreneur faces difficulties in the market in terms of new and tough competition, entrance of a new technology, excessive losses and so on. A sense of panic grips owners and shareholders and they decide to sell – but this decision comes at the wrong time, for the wrong reason and thus at a wrong price. It is thus very important for a company to have a proper exit strategy.

Harvesting can also be a strategic window, one which can be, and is, treated as an opportunity by many entrepreneurs. Harvest issues can however be enormously complicated. Therefore it is all the more important that one begins to craft a strategy early. When a company is launched, and then struggles for survival, and finally begins its ascent, selling out is usually the last thing on an entrepreneur’s mind. But to have an exit strategy ready, so that it can be capitalized upon when the opportunity presents itself, would be a wise thing for an entrepreneur to do.

Some guidelines to be kept in mind while shaping a harvest strategy are:

1. Patience: Several years are required to launch and build a successful company. The same way patience is essential during that period, it is required at the time of going over harvest issues. A harvest strategy is sensible if it allows for a time frame of at least three to five years, and as long as seven to ten years.

2. Vision: Vision is the sister of patience. An entrepreneur should have the vision to not panic as a result of nerve-racking events. Selling under stress is usually the worst of all worlds.

3. Realistic Valuation: Greed is one of the seven cardinal sins. It can sound the end for an entrepreneur too, if he persists in asking for than his business is worth. A realistic valuation of the business would attract more and better buyers.

4. Outside Advice: It may be difficult but worthwhile to find an advisor who can help craft a harvest strategy while the business is growing, and at the same time maintain objectivity about its value and have the patience and skill to maximize it. Generally outside advisors (such as investment bankers and business brokers) who are associated with the company for a short period act like real estate brokers do – keeping their commission as a major priority. But advisors who work with entrepreneurs for a period of five years or more can help shape ad implement an exit strategy for the whole business so that it is positioned to spot and respond to harvest opportunities when they appear.

Law Embracing ‘Misrepresentation’ In Contracts

Introduction

The importance of the term ‘misrepresentation’ can be inferred from the fact that “free consent” which is inevitable for an agreement to be enforceable under Section 14 of Indian Contract Act, 1872 is rendered negative if misrepresentation is proved. In other words, misrepresentation to any party in a contract so as to induce them for consent renders the contract void.

Section 18 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 (the “Contract Act”) defines misrepresentation. This section is quoted below:

“Misrepresentation” means and includes –

(1) the positive assertion, in a manner not warranted by the information of the person making it, of that which is not true, though he believes it to be true;

(2) any breach of duty which, without an intent to deceive, gains an advantage to the person committing it, or any one claiming under him, by misleading another to his prejudice, or to the prejudice of any one claiming under him;

(3) causing, however innocently, a party to an agreement, to make a mistake as to the substance of the thing which is the subject of the agreement.”

With regard to contract, the general principal is that if one party has induced the other to enter into a contract by misrepresentation, though innocently of any material fact specially within his own knowledge, the party misled can avoid the contract. The party who was induced by misrepresentation to enter into a contract, has two remedies open to him; (i) to elect to rescind the contract, or (ii) to seek enforcement of representation and insist upon being placed in the same position as if the contract was performed by claiming damages.”

Under Section 19 of the Contract Act, the right of rescission is available where consent is caused by misrepresentation.

Section 19 of the Contract Act provides for voidability of agreements without free consent. This section is quoted below:

“When consent to an agreement is caused by coercion, fraud or misrepresentation, the agreement is a contract voidable at the option of the party whose consent was so caused.

A party to a contract, whose consent was caused by fraud or misrepresentation, may, if he thinks fit, insist that the contract shall be performed, and that he shall be put in the position in which he would have been if the representations made had been true.

Exception: If such consent was caused by misrepresentation or by silence, fraudulent within the meaning of section 17, the contract, nevertheless, is not voidable, if the party whose consent was so caused had the means of discovering the truth with ordinary diligence.

Explanation: A fraud or misrepresentation which did not cause the consent to a contract of the party on whom such fraud was practiced, or to whom such misrepresentation was made, does not render a contract voidable.”

Illustration:

A, by a misrepresentation, leads B erroneously to believe that five hundred mounds of indigo are made annually at A’s factory. B examines the accounts of the factory, which show that only four hundred mounds of indigo have been made. After this B buys the factory. The contract is not voidable on account of A’s misrepresentation because of lack of ‘due diligence’.

Section 19A of Indian Contract Act, 1872 states that:-

“When consent to an agreement is caused by undue influence, the agreement is a contract voidable at the option of the party whose consent was so caused. Any such contract may be set aside absolutely or, if the party who was entitled to avoid it has received any benefit thereunder, upon such terms and conditions as to the Court may seem just”.

A Comparative Study of Correlation Between Misrepresentation and Sale Of Goods

Section 3 of the Sale of Goods Act states that:

“The unrepealed provisions of the Contract Act save in so far as they are inconsistent with the express provisions of the Sale of Goods Act, shall continue to apply to contracts for the sale of goods”.

Section 12 of the Sale of Goods Act, 1930 provides the difference between ‘condition’ and ‘warranty’ and read as follows:-

“12. Condition and warranty, – (1) A stipulation in a contract of sale with reference to goods which are the subject thereof may be a condition or a warranty.

(2) A condition is a stipulation essential to the main purpose of the contract, the breach of which gives rise to a right to treat the contract as repudiated.

(3) A warranty is a stipulation collateral to the main purpose of the contract, the breach of which gives rise to a claim for damages but not to a right to reject the goods and treat the contract as repudiated.

(4) Whether a stipulation in a contract of sale is a condition or a warranty depends in each case on the construction of the contract. A stipulation may be a condition, though called a warranty in the contract”.

Further, Section 13 of the Sale of Goods Act, 1930 provides when ‘condition’ to be treated as `warranty’, relevant part of sub-section (1) & (2) thereof reads as under:-

“13. When condition to be treated as warranty. – (1) Where a contract of sale is subject to any condition to be fulfilled by the seller, the buyer may waive the condition or elect to treat the breach of the condition as a breach of warranty and not as a ground for treating the contract as repudiated.

(2) Where a contract of sale is not severable and the buyer has accepted the goods or part thereof, the breach of any condition to be fulfilled by the seller can only be treated as a breach of warranty and not as a ground for rejecting the goods and treating the contract rejecting the goods and treating the contract as repudiated, unless there is a term of the contract, express or implied, to that effect.”

Distinction Between Misrepresentation and Fraud: Clearing the Imbroglio

Definition of Fraud as per Indian Contract Act, 1872:

Section 17:- “Fraud” means and includes any of the following acts committed by a party to a contract, or with his connivance, or by his agent, with intent to deceive another party thereto or his agent, or to induce him to enter into the contract:

(1) the suggestion, as a fact, of that which is not true by one who does not believe it to be true;

(2) the active concealment of a fact by one having knowledge or belief of the fact;

(3) a promise made without any intention of performing it;

(4) any other act fitted to deceive;

(5) any such act or omission as the law specially declares to be fraudulent.

Explanation: Mere silence as to facts likely to affect the willingness of a person to enter into a contract is not fraud, unless the circumstances of the case are such that, regard being had to them, it is the duty of the person keeping silence to speak, or unless his silence is, in itself, equivalent to speech.

Illustration

(a) A sells, by auction, to B, a horse which A knows to be unsound. A says nothing to B about the horse’s unsoundness. This is not fraud in A.

Distinction:-

As we can infer from the Indian Contract Act, misrepresentation is an innocent act of deceit whereas fraud inevitably includes the intention to deceive. As the deception is deliberate, the contract becomes void after fraud is proved whereas in case of misrepresentation the contract is voidable at the option of the party deceived. However, both are forms of undue influence as per Section 16 of Indian Contract Act.

Bellachi (Dead) by LR Vs. Pakeeran JT 2009(4) SC 298

Subject matter of the suit was a deed of sale dated 7th October, 1999 executed by the petitioner in favour of the respondent. The amount of consideration was shown therein to be a sum of Rs. 20,000/.Contention of the appellant in the said suit was that the said deed of sale is vitiated by misrepresentation, undue influence, fraud and collusion as she was made to believe that she would obtain financial assistance by executing the said document. According to her, she had reposed complete faith and trust in her brother who used to visit her place often. The law does not envisage raising of a presumption in favour of undue influence. A party alleging the same must prove the same subject of course to just exceptions. Hence, the plaint was dismissed.

State of Karnataka and Anr. Vs. All India Manufaturers Organization and Ors. AIR 2006 SC 1846

State of Karnataka decided to take up “Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project” with a consortium. For the very same, Memorandum of understanding (MOU) was entered into between the petitioner and a consortium of companies.Government order (GO) was also passed. Members of consortium entered into an agreement for assigning their respective rights under the GO and MOU in favour of Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd. Nandi submitted a framework agreement (FWA) which was approved by the petitioner. One of the key obligations of petitioner under FWA was to make land available.Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board entered into an agreement with Nandi for acquisition of private land. Henceforth, notifications were issued.FWA was challenged in public interest writ petition. The petitioner took the plea that they had given their consent due to misrepresentation by Nandi. The inference drawn by the High Court was that the plea of fraud and misrepresentation sought to be raised was not only an afterthought but also false to the knowledge of the State Government. The High Court, therefore, observed (vide Paragraph 27): “It is unfortunate that the petitioners and the State Government have chosen to raise this bogie (sic- bogey) to defeat the public project subserving public interest. On appeal, Supreme Court upheld the view of High Court regarding the plea of misrepresentation.

Union of India and Ors. Vs. R.P. Yadav AIR 2000 SC 2252

A contract had been entered between Indian navy and artificial apprentice. The question dealt with was whether artificer apprentice of Indian Navy who had been given re-engagement for certain period after obtaining his consent for it entitled to withdraw consent and demand his release from force as of right. It is the case of respondant in his writ petition that he agreed to be reengaged was based on the misrepresentation on the part of the appellants to him that he had only completed 11 years of pensionable service and that he required another four years to earn the pension. As such, it was contended he had a right to rescind the contract under Section 19 of the Contract Act. The appellants by sending Raj Kumar the “Expiry of Engagement Serial” expressly represented to him that he had put in only 11 years of pensionable service and that he should apply for extension for four years to qualify for pension. Therefore, the court held that the consent of artificial apprentice was obtained through misrepresentation.

Sri Tarsem Singh Vs. Sukhminder Singh AIR 1998 SC 1400

Parties entered into a contract for sale of certain land and certain amount was paid to petitioner as earnest money. Suit for specific performance filed when petitioner did not execute sale deed and decreed by Trial Court. In appeal Additional District Judge observed that both parties suffered from mistake of fact as to area of land and sale. Consideration was already paid by the respondent. Decree for specific performance was not passed but decree for refund of earnest money was passed which was confirmed by High Court and Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld that the respondent was subjected to misrepresentation by the petitioner as the latter made a false promise to sell the disputed property.

M/s. Arosan Enetrprises Ltd. Vs. Union of India & Anr. AIR 1999 SC 3804

The factual score depicts that on 24th October, 1989, the appellant furnished a performance bank guarantee for $ 29,28,000 and upon bank guarantee being furnished, the Government of India assigned the contract to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) under Clause 20 of the Agreement. FCI also in its turn opened a Letter of Credit for the full value of the contract though, however, as the records depict that while on 26th October, 1989, the Letter of Credit was opened by FCI but its authentication was not effected within the delivery date i.e. 31st October, 1989. Point to be noted is that the Bank, can not, by merely stating that there was non-supply of goods by the appellant, use the words “fraud or misrepresentation” for purposes of coming under the exception. The dispute as to non-supply of goods was a matter between the seller and buyer and did not, as stated in the above decision, provide any cause of action for the Bank against the seller.

Acne Prevention – How Do I Stop My Pimples From Popping Up in the First Place?

I have tried over-the-counter creams, and they get rid of my pimples. But how do I prevent acne? How do I stop new pimples from popping up? Unfortunately, western-trained medical doctors do not seem to have any answer. Their common response seems to be a prescription of antibiotics. Eastern-trained doctors, for example the Indian Ayurvedic doctors or the Chinese physicians, tend to prescribe a change of lifestyle instead. Neither way is acceptable to most people.

Here are some tips which seem to work for myself and for my friends:

  • Wash your face more often. Most experts recommend just washing your face twice a day. But I found that my acne cleared up when I washed my face 4 times a day. Of course, I had to use a non-soap cleanser. I have to admit that I suffer from oily skin, so that may be a factor.
  • Avoid oily foods, fried foods and barbecued foods. In general, avoid any food cooked in very high temperatures. Overseas Chinese friends tell me these foods are known as “heaty” foods, which are known to cause acne and other problems. A western-trained immunologist or nutritionist would probably have his own explanation for this. All I know is: the time when I frequently ate out at Kentucky Fried Chicken, my acne became much, much worse. When I switched to eating pasta, noodles and sandwiches, my pimples started disappearing. Then I went to celebrate by eating barbecued chicken at Kenny Roger’s, and the acne came back.
  • Get more sleep. Many of my friends and myself suffer more from acne when we do not have enough rest. I do not know why for sure, but I would guess that it is tied to our immune system. It has been proven that people who suffer from exhaustion have weakened immune systems. And since acne is partially caused or aggravated by bacteria, a weakened immune system allows more bacteria to grow and spread in the skin, thus causing more pimples to pop up.
  • Reduce stress. Some of my colleagues suffer outbreaks of acne when they come under more pressure at work. Their acne seems to disappear once things cool down at work again. I would suppose that this is linked to stress and the immune system. A good way to relieve stress would be to go for a massage. Or you could go play with your neighbor’s pet dog or cat instead.
  • Turn off your air-conditioner. One of my friends told me he no longer sleeps with the air-conditioner on because it causes his skin condition to become worse. I have not noticed this problem myself, so your mileage may vary…
  • Change of climate. An ex-colleague who suffered badly from acne went for an Alaskan cruise for his honeymoon. He came back with clear, smooth skin. He told me: “Yeah, after a few days on the ship admiring the icebergs, my skin started peeling. Hurt like hell at first. But all my pimples disappeared after that.”
  • Get a facial, or use a masque. My kid sister also suffered from acne. Once she started going for facials, her acne started clearing up. It seems that the deep cleansing and exfoliation and what-not gets rid of the dead skin, dirt and bacteria which eventually cause pimples to pop up.

Not every tip works for everyone. But if you do not try them, you will never know if it will help to prevent your acne.

Mastering Hip Hop Songs in Your Own Home Recording Studio Or Computer

I cannot stress enough the benefit of having your home recorded Hip Hop songs Mastered by an outside Mastering Engineer that specializes in the Hip Hop genre. The end result will no doubt be better when done by a trained ear with an acoustically tuned environment & Mastering specific gear. With that said, it is possible for you to achieve usable results in your home Hip Hop recording studio & the purpose of this article is to help you achieve those results using the recording gear/software that you already own. If you are recording on Digidesign Protools software then you can use the plug ins that came with the program. Most similar programs should have comparable processing plug ins so consult your user manual for those.

You will start your mastering session with a two track stereo mix of your song preferably with the master level peaking at about -3db never hitting the red on the meter. This mix should already be sounding the way you want while needing a boost in volume & maybe a couple EQ tweaks to make it translate well to various sound systems/sources.

Starting with the EQ make adjustments to the lows, mids, & highs, based on any notes that you taken after listening to your mix on several different types of sound sources such as earbuds, a car system, a bookshelf stereo, a mono clock radio, laptop speakers etc. Your goal is for your master to end up sounding good on all the different systems where of course on larger systems with sub woofers you will have more bass & on laptop speakers & earbuds there will be little or no sub bass. The key is to have a master that still retains clarity on each of these sources. When you listen to your mix on these sources listen for frequency problems that tend to show up on multiple sound sources as these are the first things you should work on with the EQ. You should try trial & error to find the frequencies and remember it is always better to fix by cutting the offensive sounds then by boosting other frequencies to cover them. Remember that any EQ tweaks that you perform on the stereo mix is going to affect the whole song so make sure the adjustments are actually fixing the problem without causing a bigger one in another area.

The next step in your home Hip Hop Mastering session after you are happy with the EQ results will be adding a Compressor to the track. This will be used to give the song a smooth level sound making the track level consistent from start to finish. The Compressor will also aid in boosting the perceived volume of the song. Below is a set of Compressor settings that I have come to use on Hip Hop tracks as a starting point when putting together a song Master.

gain 3.5 db

threshold -22.6 db

ratio 3.00:1

attack 11 ms

release 50 ms

knee 80

(These are compressor start off positions which I have found are a good starting point for Hip Hop recordings where the mix has been peaked at -3db)

The next device in line after the Compressor is a Limiter, which is kind of like a Compressor on steroids, the Limiter will be used to max out the volume of the mix & create a master that is as loud as any commercially released Hip Hop track.

The Limiter settings shown below are settings that I have found to be a good starting point achieving a loud yet not distorted final master of a Home studio recorded Hip Hop track

3.5 gain

threshold 17.6 db

attack 1.0 ms

release 20 ms

(These are Limiter start off positions which I have found are a good starting point for Hip Hop recordings where the mix has been peaked at -3db)

You will want to do A/B listening comparisons between your working master & a commercially released Hip Hop track that is similar in style to your song. You will want your master to be as loud as the commercially released song and translate well on all the different sound systems/sources.

Just as you will want to do with a mix, after completing your song master save it & leave it alone for a day or two then come back to it with fresh ears and you may have a different perspective on it & finds things to fix that may have been missed earlier. once you feel your song master is comparable to the commercially released song you are done mastering your new song.

There are many different specialty programs & software plug ins that are designed for Mastering however this article is geared toward those that are trying to master their songs using the options that are already present on their recording software or workstation. Also keep in mind that Pro Mastering houses will furnish you with a master CD that will be verified to be error free as well as contain special encoding that will be the master you would want to give to a CD replication/duplication plant to get mass produced CD’s. This is an important feature though it seems in the music business more & more artists are bypassing the cost of getting CD’s made & instead having download only releases.

The information in this article should give you a path to follow when attempting to master your Hip Hop songs in your own home studio. There are no rules set in stone though trial & error have helped to formulate the mastering procedure given above.

Difference Between Bazi and Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS) – Part I

In Chinese Astrology, there are 2 schools of studies that are commonly available, namely Bazi (also known as 4 Pillars) and Zi Wei Dou Shu (“ZWDS”, also known as Emperor Astrology). Among the 2, the former is much more well-known and a bigger practitioner and fan base. This is hardly surprising given that Bazi has a much longer history (approximately 2000 years longer) and thus more widely practiced and followed.

A common perception is that both methods can predict the same events and thus a lot of enthusiasts do not see the point to learn both. They chose to learn Bazi as it has a bigger fan base and thus commercially more viable. Now are both methods really the same? After being fortunate enough to be the rare few to master both techniques, I would say both methods are as different as the magnifying glass vs the microscope. Although both Bazi and ZWDS allow us to delve deeper into the details of one’s life and destiny, the level of details, clarity and use is not the same. It can be conceptualized as the same piece of cake, going under the magnifying glass and the microscope allow us to read deeper into its details. What we see of the same piece of cake through the magnifying glass vs the microscope is very different.

On a broad level, learning Bazi is much easier but mastering it to be able to read till the level of details a ZWDS reading can offer is tough. The reason why Bazi is easier to learn is because the logic is easier to grasp and hence it is popularly embraced and studied by the scholars and commoners throughout ancient China history. On the other hand, ZWDS is not popular because many principles requires one to memorize them by hard without a logical link.

It is interesting to note that historically, Bazi became part of Chinese way of life since most ancient Chinese scholars studied it and ancient Chinese farmers know it. As for ZWDS, it became an exclusive knowledge that quietly became the privilege of the Imperial Court from Ming Dynasty, which makes it exclusive. The ancient Chinese Emperors are known to be selfish and suspicious. Now, why do you think ZWDS remain an exclusive knowledge for the Imperial Court for such a long time then?

To most people, Bazi is an easier subject to learn and hence they mistakenly think mastering it is easier as well. Bazi is like the magnifying glass, easier to construct but reading the intricate details eventually run into a stumbling block for most. ZWDS is like the microscope, constructing it takes hell lot of effort but when you go beyond building it, the clarity and intricacies are all too easy to observe. In my next article, I will continue to explore deeper the difference between Bazi and ZWDS.

How to Increase Height – 5 Tricks to Gain Height Today

The quickest way in how to increase height is by wearing shoe lifts. If you Google “shoe lifts,” a number of links will show up in the search; shoe lifts can be purchased online and come in heights ranging from one-quarter inch to two inches. They fit inside shoes and give you extra height without people knowing. However, lifts over and inch and a quarter will make it difficult to keep your feet in the shoe while walking. Bigger lifts are best used inside boots. But then you may have difficulty getting your feet in and out of the boots.

If you’re a man or woman wondering how to increase height, another way is to keep your vertebral column regularly stretched in a vertical position. Height shrinkage can result from bad posture and a stiff spinal column. Grabbing a bar overhead and then lifting feet off the floor, will pull vertically at the spine, loosening things up, and perhaps creating a little more space between some of the vertebral bones. But don’t expect to go from 5-5 to 5-10 doing this. This technique may result in minor height increase only if your vertebral column is “scrunched” from bad posture in the first place.

If you’re a man or woman, regardless of height, wondering how to increase height, practice good posture wherever you go. Bad posture can “model” or “mold” your back into a permanently slouched shape, deducting an inch or two from your height. If you are a child or adolescent wondering how to increase height, there is more hope for you. A back doctor should give you a thorough exam to see if you have a condition called kyphosis.

Kyphosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that results in loss of height. It can be corrected by wearing a specially-made back brace. But the brace works only on growing bodies. Adults with kyphosis cannot benefit from the brace. Kids can help reach maximum height by eating plenty of protein from healthy sources like chicken, turkey, beans, nuts and eggs.

Finally, for anybody wondering how to increase height, you can wear hairdos that add a good inch. And of course, women always have the option of wearing high heels that are concealed by long pants.

Restoring Your Garden Trampoline

With spring nearly upon us, many of you will now be venturing into the garden to tidy up and make preparations for the new Season. If you have a trampoline and it’s looking a little tired after the long cold winter, here are some tips to help restore it to its former glory.

Trampoline Frames

The trampoline frame is at the heart of the trampoline for its safety and performance. It is vital that the frame is in good condition. It may be possible if you find damage or corrosion to source a new part and replace that section but if this isn’t possible, or the frame is beyond economic repair, you will probably have to scrap it. Inspect the frame carefully. Look for corrosion from water that has got inside the trampoline ring and is causing rust from the inside which might not be easily visible but causing a weakening of the trampoline frame. Many cheap trampolines will not galvanise the inside of the trampoline tubing and this does leave them liable to failure in this way.

If the trampoline has a welded frame check the condition of the welds carefully to ensure there is no fracture. This is a common area for the trampoline to fail, perhaps from overloading or just from a poor quality weld.

This is the most important area for checking as a frame could fail whilst in use leading to a possible serious injury for anyone who is using it at the time.

Trampoline Jump Mat

The trampoline mat may have holes in it caused by things falling on it like branches or fireworks (a common culprit!) or even a cigarette end. The trampoline mat (or jump mat as it is sometimes known) can be replaced. You will need to know the size of your trampoline, the shape of it and the number of springs it has to attach to. You may also need a spring tool to remove the old trampoline mat and install the new one. It can be hard work to do this without a spring tool. Make sure that any new trampoline mat is made of A grade Permatron Polypropylene, which is UV resistant, and sewn with UV resistant thread. The V rings to attach to the springs should also be galvanised to prevent rust.

Remember when you remove the old bounce mat to take off the springs in even stages around the edge so as to maintain the tension across the bounce mat evenly until you only have four springs left attaching it at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, then finally remove these. When installing the new mat start by putting these four springs on first and then build up the tension by gradually putting springs on to split the gaps. You will find this makes it much easier when you come to the final ones.

Trampoline Springs

Your trampoline springs may have become over stretched or corroded over time and require replacement. You will need to know how many springs your trampoline needs, and the length of these when they are at rest (to do this you need to remove one that is in the best condition and not over stretched). Measure the full length of the spring from the outer edges of the hooks at either end.

You may need to order a spring tool to help you remove the old ones and install the new ones. See the “bounce mat” section of this article for instructions on the method to use when removing and reinstalling a large number of the springs at one time.

Don’t be tempted to use a spring that is a different length than those you have. It will cause the performance of your trampoline to be reduced significantly.

Trampoline Net/Trampoline Enclosure

The trampoline net can become damaged in high winds if garden debris is blown into it or maybe the trampoline has been blown over and the safety enclosure got damaged in the process. The net can also be damaged by children gabbing it while they are jumping and pulling it down.

With some designs of trampoline enclosure it is impossible to replace the netting alone and a whole new trampoline safety enclosure will need to be purchased. However, some suppliers offer the netting separately to fit their own design of trampoline and this might also fit some other makes.

If some of the trampoline enclosure poles, top caps or sleeves are missing, or damaged, then these can easily be replaced too rather than buying a whole new trampoline enclosure kit.

Trampoline Spring Padding

Probably the most likely part to need replacing on your trampoline is the spring padding. Over the years the fabric, however well made, will deteriorate under strong sunshine and in heavy winds. The cold weather can also make it brittle which results in it cracking. It is important not to use the trampoline without any spring padding as someone could fall on the frame and receive an injury if it is not protected.

Many cheap trampolines use a PE material which will probably require replacing annually as the material tends to crack in the sunlight. Spending a little more on better quality spring padding can save money in the long run.

Trampoline Cover

In future, a good tip is to remove the spring padding at the end of the season to protect it from the elements. Alternatively buy a trampoline cover to give added protection to the whole trampoline. The trampoline cover will help protect the bounce mat, springs, spring padding and to some extent the frame also by preventing rain water getting inside the tubing. Some people collapse the safety enclosure on to the centre of the trampoline at the end of the Autumn and cover the whole thing with the trampoline cover.

In this instance, if high winds are forecast, it might be wise to secure the trampoline cover with some rope or strong twine as most covers are not designed for severe weather conditions.

Other ideas

If you are buying parts for your trampoline you might want to consider choosing some other accessories to make best use of any postage charges you are paying. Popular accessories include:

Trampoline access ladders, Trampoline anchor kits, Trampoline tents, Trampoline skirts and Trampoline shoe bags.

Hopefully all of these tips will help to keep your trampoline going for many more years to come.

Happy Bouncing!

Cleaning And Killing Black Mold With Common, Non-Toxic, Household Products

You will find several household products you are able to use for cleaning black mold. This is a short list of commonly used items that are safe to use.

Mold is really a fungus that thrives in moist or humid conditions. It could be discovered in locations from the house that remains damp, for example the bathroom, kitchen or basement. Mold can be damaging to the surface it grows on, discoloring or corroding it. It can also affect people with allergies and can cause a fatal lung infection if breathed in. The key to mold control is moisture control.

It is essential to dry water damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. If mold is a problem in your house, clean up the mold and get rid of the excess water or moisture. Fix leaky plumbing or other sources of h2o. Wash mold off tough surfaces with detergent and water, and dry totally. Absorbent materials (for example ceiling tiles & carpet) that become moldy may have to be replaced. These house remedies can help get rid of mold effectively.

1. Cleaning Black Mold With Detergent and Water

You are able to use a solution of detergent and water to clean off surface mold from non-porous material such as glass and tiles. Detergent is not a mold killer, the solution is meant for scrubbing off the visible mold from the surfaces. When mold grows on non-porous material, it’s good enough to have all the surface molds cleaned thoroughly. It’s not necessary to kill the mold. For cleaning black mold off outdoor cushions, mix a gallon of water and 1/4 cup of soap in the bucket. You can stir the mix around with your hand and the sponge.

The mixture should be slightly sudsy. Scrub the cushions with the sponge. You can scrub as tough as you like until you get the mold and mildew stains off. The detergent should kill the mold and mildew while it’s breaking down the stains. Dowse any remaining stains with lemon juice. You may still have some pale stains remaining on the cushions once you have finished cleaning them. These should be saturated with lemon juice. Let the cushions dry in the sun. The lemon juice will lift the remainder of the stain out from the cushion using the sunlight as a catalyst.

2. Cleaning Black Mold With Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda over moldy carpet to absorb the mold and freshen the air. Leave it on the carpet for as little as 20 minutes or overnight. Use a vacuum cleaner with an empty bag for maximum efficiency to vacuum up the baking soda. Baking Soda paste can be used to clean tile floors as well. It’s suggested that you mix enough water with the baking soda to create a soft paste, then apply it to the trouble spots on your tile, scrub, and rinse with a vinegar/water mixture to neutralize the baking soda to avoid residue.

3. Cleaning Black Mold With Borax Powder (this one is possibly the easiest!)

Use a solution of 1 cup of borax powder to 1 cup of h2o to mop floors. Scrub the black mold with the disinfecting solution over a small area. Wipe away the fluid and scum of mold and disinfecting solution with old rags, but do not rinse the cleansed area. Leaving some borax behind will help prevent the black mold from returning. Repeat steps until you have cleansed all the black mold. Leave your work area open to ventilation and exposed to the sun if possible. This will help speed the drying process and blow out any spores in the air. That will also help reduce the possibility of a recurrence of black mold.

4. Cleaning Black Mold With Vinegar

Clean mold on hard surfaces using a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Fill a plastic spray bottle with the solution. Spray surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom with the solution and scrub the area with a tough brush. The latest trend in mold and mildew control is the shower and bathroom sprays that use once you’re done taking a shower. These products work just fine, but they act on the same principle as the vinegar spray. Vinegar can substitute just about any bathroom cleaning product sold today, with the exception of heavy duty abrasive cleaners like Comet.

5. Cleaning Black Mold With Chlorine Bleach

Use a solution of one part chlorine bleach to one part h2o to clean carpeting and upholstery that has been affected by mold. Soak a sponge or cloth in the solution and swipe it across the mold to trap the spores in the cloth. NOTE… While leach will clean the black mold, it will not kill it on porous surfaces. You must still use a mold killer before or after you clean the black mold with chlorine bleach.

6. Cleaning Black Mold With Hydrogen Peroxide

Get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide with 3% concentration from your local drug stores. Transfer the hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray it onto the mold infected surface. Leave it for at least 15 minutes for hydrogen peroxide to take action and kill the molds. After that, scour the area to remove all the mold and mold stains.

For stubborn mold in tough to reach places, like the grout of tiles, use full-strength hydrogen peroxide. Simply apply a number of capfuls to the affected area, allow it to sit for 15 minutes and scrub with an old toothbrush. Note… Keep the spray bottle of remaining hydrogen peroxide in dark place as light reduces the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide. For more effective mold removal, you may consider using hydrogen peroxide with vinegar during the cleaning process.

Hydrogen peroxide is effective at killing molds as it has the elements of anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It is a much safer mold cleaner as compared to bleach because it does not produce toxic residue or toxic fumes that harm the environment. Hydrogen peroxide is good at cleaning mold on almost any materials including clothes, walls, bathroom fixtures and other kitchen appliances. For removable rugs, lay them outside on a sunny day with the back of the carpeting exposed to the sun. Mix one part of 3% hydrogen peroxide with five parts h2o. Spray the solution onto the back of the carpet and allow the sun to hit the carpeting for a day. The combination of direct sunlight and hydrogen peroxide will kill mold spores.

7. Cleaning Black Mold With Ammonia

Make an ammonia solution using a ratio of 1 part of ammonia to 1 part of h2o. Fill a spray bottle with ammonia solution and spray it onto the moldy surfaces. Leave the solution to sit for a number of hours before rinsing with h2o. After rinsing or wiping with water, allow the areas to dry completely. For vinyl seats like in your boat, combine 1/4 cup of ammonia with 1 cup of water, and pour this solution into a spray bottle. Spray the mold with this mixture, and scrub it with a bristle brush. Rinse the solution off with clean water to remove it from the vinyl seats. If you still notice mold on the seats, use rubbing alcohol.

NOTE… Ammonia, similar to bleach kills mold growing on non-porous materials like bathtubs, tiles, countertops, and glass. However ammonia is not an effective killer for mold growing in porous materials like drywall and woods. Ammonia is a harsh chemical, it emits toxic fumes when mixed with bleach. Use ammonia with care.

8. Cleaning Black Mold With Liquid Laundry Detergent

Pour two cups of cold h2o and 1 tbsp. liquid laundry soap into a bowl. Mix it up vigorously with a whisk to create thick suds. Dip a rag into the bowl to scoop out the suds. Rub the suds gently onto the moldy carpet. Switch to clean portions from the rag and apply more suds often. Rinse the carpeting with a rag and plain water. Blot thoroughly with a dry rag to remove excessive moisture. Mix 1 gallon of warm h2o and 1/2 cup borax powder into a bucket if the mold remains. Dip a scrub brush into the borax solution and scrub the carpet until the mold is gone. Rinse the carpet with a rag and plain water, and dry thoroughly with a clean rag.

9. Cleaning Black Mold With A Homemade Disinfectant Spray

Once all of the mold has been cleaned, use a disinfectant spray to purify the area. In a plastic spray bottle, combine 1 cup of distilled (or spring) h2o, 1 cup of 91% isopropyl alcohol and the juice of a couple average lemons. The solution is safe enough to spray into the air and does not harm surfaces that it comes into contact with. Store the spray bottle in the refrigerator and use within a few weeks. This will give your house the sterile smell of a doctors office as well as a ‘Lemon Pledge’ hint creating the illusion of ‘dusting all day’!

10. Cleaning Black Mold With Grapefruit Seed Extract

Most households do not have Grapefruit Seed Extract in the cupboard but it’s readily available. Combine 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract to about 1 cup of water will make a useful mold killing solution. Simply squirt the solution on moldy surfaces while wiping with a soft cloth to remove mold and the harmless, light residue will prevent it from coming back.

11. Cleaning Black Mold With Citric Acid

Your local Whole Foods or co-op should have crystallized citric acid on hand and it is relatively inexpensive. Use about 1 cup of acid to 1.5 gallons of hot water. You are able to wring out your mop a little and spread it on lightly, but the chances of it evaporating before you get around to scrubbing increase when you use less. Soak the floor(tile floors only) if you have a large room and need time to do all the scrubbing. Letting the acid soak a little will also give it time to break up mineral deposits, dirt, rust and of course the black mold.

You will need to rinse a number of times with citric acid, it does not come up as easily as other products but it’s much safer around small children. Cleaning a tile floor with citric acid is not only environmentally friendly, it’s incredibly effective. You may already be familiar with the orange hand cleaner products, they use citric acid for cleaning as well.

And there you have it, household solutions to use for cleaning black mold

Cold Weather Camping Tent – Feel Snug As A Bug In A Rug

Keen on holidaying in Karakoram and the mighty Himalayas or other such snow-bound areas? Then you need the basic multi-layered clothing and camping kit to keep the chill at bay! This includes packing smart bedding and a sturdy cold weather camping tent of which the new-age, easy to assemble all-season Expedition tents are! It’s your choice whether you buy or rent out a light, modern cold weather camping tent that comes in many durable fabric choices, space afforded, tent-poles in compact storage sizes and also afford better ventilation.

Want to Know about Seasonal Tent Ratings? Here’s the lowdown!

The best kind of cold weather hiking tent you can take along to the extreme weather conditions like described above, is the kind that comes with a Four Season rating; this variety provides superior protection against all types of high country weather conditions as compared to the shield provided by the Three Season and Summer tents.

The cold weather hiking tent is made of stronger material and tent-poles so is more effective in demanding weather situations of high country; those that are all-season campers will definitely enjoy the flexible variety of the Three season tent that allows one to remove or un-zip panels, though less hardy as compared to the Four season variety.

The Four season variety is durable, sturdy and long-lasting besides being the right type for the extreme climatic conditions and come with extra poles, stronger fabrics, shorter profiles, storm-flaps and secured loops for guy lines and pegs. Thus, the 4-season camping tents made exclusively for the expedition-trekker kind are ideal for facing inclement weather conditions!

Kinds of Tents

The best cold weather camping tent is rounded, has a double wall protective shield of material that faces the wind and shrugs off the snow while also acting as a suitable lining support.

Some are shaped like domes, others give a tunnel-look but both kinds of tents are suitable for camping during summer, spring and autumn as they are spacious, even though wind-resistance is low in extreme climate. The common free standing variety has a square base with a dual pole dome, modified into the triple pole dome with a hexagon-base for better ground-grip.

The first choice of extreme climate trekkers is the Geodesic tent (3 or more tent poles crossed-over) or the dome-tunnel combi-style. The cold weather camping tent featuring a tub floor and opposite doors, multiple vestibules (for easy movement) and gear lofts besides separate kitchen area is by far the best kind of tent for those heading for high altitude high jinks!

Camping out at high altitudes is a great experience if adequate precautions and advance preparations are taken into consideration: smart campers should buy appropriate winter camping gear and accessories, besides the cold weather camping tent and insulated clothes that prevent sweat from forming on the skin but protect against blizzards and hurricane-like conditions.

Set-tent on solid ground, keeping vents open to avoid drip condensation taking place on the surface of the tent material and include buying sleeping support/ seat-pads made of foam or the mummy sleeping bag (has space for extra sleeping bag liners). With these done, setting out on a winter expedition that includes camping on high-altitude will be challenging, unforgettable and safe fun in colder climes!

Carpet Repair, Everything You Need to Know (But Didn’t Know Whom to Ask)

Carpet Repair: An Introduction

Let’s start with the basics: It is possible to do your own repair. If you would rather repair than spend hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars replacing then a carpet repair may be for you.

Although the average homeowner may be able to repair their carpet themselves, it’s not necessarily the best choice.

A professional can help you in a small fraction of the time it would take an untrained person, all while making a hard job look easy.

If you are a homeowner and want to try to fix it yourself, I caution you that if quality really matters, then hire a pro.

For now I’ll just skim the surface and describe the most common types of repairs. Later, I’ll go in depth and explain in more detail about each type.

Here are some different types of carpet repair:

• Stretching

• Patching

• Transitions

• Berber

• Seam Repair

• Pet Damaged (Including Removing Pet Urine)

• Repairing Flood Damage

• Reinstalling After Remodeling

• Removing

• Repair Stairs

• Stain Removal

When an original installation is done properly, you should never need to re-stretch loose carpet. Proper installation requires a tool called a stretcher or a power stretcher. (Not a kicker, kickers aren’t nearly enough.) When you see ripples, wrinkles, or bunched-up carpet, that’s when you know you need to have it stretched.

Most of the time, a loose carpet can be re-stretched without needing to take apart seams. If seams do need to be taken apart, it opens up a whole other can of worms.

If there’s some furniture in the room, we can often use our carpet stretcher without having to clear the room entirely. Often we can move the furniture from one side of the room to the other and stretch one side of the room at a time.

If you have a stain that you can’t get out or you have damaged carpet due to a burn (not the good kind), or your bad dog or cat thinks that carpet is a food group, then a patch may be the only solution.

Patching isn’t as easy as it looks. The patch needs to be exactly perfect. If there’s any overlap or gap at the seam (at all), you’ll be sorry.

You can use a leftover piece of carpet from the original installation or steal a piece of carpet from a closet to do your carpet patching. One thing you probably can’t do is go to the carpet store and buy a piece to match.

A carpet to floor transition is anyplace where the carpet ends and the floor begins. If it’s at a tile floor we call it a carpet to tile transition.

Many people install their own tile but don’t know how to finish the job with the carpet to tile transition. Often professional tile installers don’t know how to finish their job with a proper carpet to tile transition. There are several good ways to do a carpet to floor transition that I will explain in the carpet to tile transition article.

When people refer to a Berber carpet, they’re referring to a looped carpet with rows. It’s not really a Berber carpet but for our purposes here it’s okay to call it Berber. For an interesting read on the history of Berber carpet click here.

Berber carpet repair is often needed due to a snag in a Berber carpet or a pull in a Berber carpet. A pull in a Berber carpet happens when one or more threads get caught, either in a vacuum or some other way. Often times it’s the family pet or a child that pulls Berber carpet and creates the snag or run.

If there is just one Berber carpet row that has been pulled, it can be re-burled (glued back into place). If the Berber carpet run is more serious, say for example a dog was trapped in a room and tried to dig her way out, then a patch is in order.

If your Berber carpet is loose then it will need to be stretched. Stretching Berber carpet isn’t really any different than stretching carpet of any other type.

If a carpet comes apart at the seam it can be repaired in several different ways. One way is to glue it back together, another way would be to remove the old seam tape and do the entire seam over. If the seam that came apart is on a Berber carpet then it becomes a bit more challenging.

A seam needs to withstand a lot of use, and do so for many years. This is one place where it really makes sense to use the best products available. One thing you definitely should not use is the cheap two-sided carpet tape that some web sites sell. It won’t last.

Repairing carpet that’s been damaged by a dog or a cat may be as simple as using a solution to remove the stain and odor. Or it may require much more, such as removing carpet and replacing it with a patch, or even going deeper by removing and replacing the carpet padding and cleaning and deodorizing the floor below the carpet, the tack strip, and even the baseboard.

When a room becomes flooded, most often we will remove the padding, dry out the carpet and then replace the padding with new carpet pad. In most cases the tack strip does not need to be replaced. A flood damaged carpet can mildew quite quickly so it’s important to take quick action.

Removing, replacing, or installing new built-in furniture, walls, floor heaters, toilets, cabinets, and other fixtures are just a few reasons that a carpet installer will need install the carpet properly into the room. This will require some new tack strip and possibly some new carpet and pad to add to the area. Many times the customer will have some carpet left over from the installation. If not, we can often take carpet from the closet.

Removing carpet and carpet pad is simple but sometimes strenuous. If we are trying to save the carpet to use in a different room or to re-carpet the hallway or stairway, we will want to try to keep it in one piece. If the objective is just to remove old carpet and old carpet pad, we will make it easy on ourselves by cutting the carpet into strips approximately two feet wide.

Sometimes we charge to haul the carpet and pad away but most often we leave it in garbage bags for the customer to feed into their garbage can over a period of a few weeks (no charge).

The first stair always wears out first. One way to save a LOT of money is to use a scrap of leftover carpet from the installation or from a closet to replace just a stair or two.

If more stairs need to be re-carpeted, and if the stairway carpet matches the carpet in the hall and the rest of the house, you can save a LOT of money by replacing the stairway carpet with carpet removed from a different room. It’s far less expensive to replace just one room of carpet than to re-carpet your entire house, and the stairway carpet continues to match the carpet in the hall and the rest of the house.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of products that you can use to remove stains from your carpet. If you want some great tips on how to remove carpet stains click here.

In conclusion

The preceding information only scratches the surface of what’s possible with carpet repair. In the future we do plan on writing additional articles describing in further detail every category that was listed.

We here at Creative Carpet Repair hope this helps you in your quest to learn about how to repair carpet and we are available during normal business hours to answer any question you may have. Good luck!

Before Getting a Tattoo, Consider These Cool and Trendy Tattoo Alternatives

The Permanency and Process of a Traditional Tattoo Can Be Scary

I don’t like needles but I love the idea of getting body art or skin decoration. I’m also not too thrilled about the permanency of a ‘needle’ tattoo I might hate down the road. Have you priced tattoo removal processes lately? The cost of tattoo removal is at least 3 times as much as getting the tattoo! After doing some research, I discovered some fantastic alternatives for body art and I’m going to give those a shot (no pun intended) way before I jump into the nearest tattoo parlor.

Tattoo Alternative #1: The Natural Beauty of Henna Tattoos

Henna tattoos have been making a comeback and I can certainly understand why. The dried and pulverized Henna Plant Lawsonia Inermis is made into a paste and applied to skin treated first with mehlabiya oil. The paste is then applied to the skin using a stencil design.

Henna tattoo stencils come in an incredible variety of designs and can be reused. In fact, once the paste dries after an hour or two, the paste can be reapplied 2-3 more times to intensify the color to a deep brown or nearly black. If the paste is used just for a single time, is dried and removed, the color continues to deepen to a rusty-orange or reddish tone. It reminds me of self-tanning lotion in that respect.

The application of Henna tattoos does not require licensing and is considered safe for all skin types (outside of those who have an allergic reaction to Henna). Henna tattoos can last up to 4 weeks with care not to scrub the area and protect the tattoo with Vaseline in chlorinated water.

Kits range in price but the average cost for a henna kit, which includes the paste, stencil(s) and other needed supplies is under $20. In fact, one bottle of Henna dye can create about 25 mid-size tattoos.

Tattoo Alternative #2: Body Piercings

Yes, we’re pretty much aware of umpteen holes in earlobes and ear cartilage, nose, tongue, lips, eyebrow, and belly button rings. However, the days of face piercings have gone by the wayside as more employers have increased bans on wearing this ‘distracting and unprofessional’ body art to work. The great thing about piercings, though, is that the jewelry can be removed (or changed) on demand. My only issue with body piercings is the healing time which varies considerably, depending on the area being pierced:

  • Ear lobe 6 to 8 weeks
  • Ear cartilage 4 months to 1 year
  • Eyebrow 6 to 8 weeks
  • Nostril 2 to 4 months
  • Nasal septum 6 to 8 months
  • Nasal bridge 8 to 10 weeks
  • Tongue 4 weeks
  • Lip 2 to 3 months
  • Nipple 3 to 6 months
  • Navel 4 months to 1 year
  • Female genitalia 4 to 10 weeks
  • Male genitalia 4 weeks to 6 months

I do worry about infection with body piercings – but not quite as much as with a traditional tattoo that might be hard to reach (as on the back of a shoulder) to keep clean and bandaged.

Tattoo Alternative #3: Temporary Tattoos

Now, temporary tattoos just might be the ticket and best choice of all as a traditional tattoo alternative. Temporary tattoos are made on special paper and coated with special silicon. Once wet and placed on an area of the body for a minute or so, the colored “tattoo” design ‘slides off’ and is transferred to the skin.

Similar to Henna tattoos, temporary tattoos can last up to about 4 weeks if taken care of: no scrubbing, scratchy clothing, or rubbing against them. Also, like Henna tattoos, temporary tattoos are safe (children get them in bubble-gum machines all the time) and have become as sophisticated as traditional tattoos – without needles and permanency.

What gets truly fun about temporary tattoos is that you can design your own – online – for little more than a ready-made temporary tattoo design.

Tattoo Alternatives Wrap-Up

So, celebrate an occasion, speak your mind, dare to be different! Try out some of these alternative tattoo ideas and have fun adorning your body in a new way. Invite your friends for a “Happy Henna Day” or design and order some custom tattoos for the bridesmaids in a wedding. Think outside the box.

“Alternative tattoos” are trendy, different, and can be taken off or out if you don’t want to live with them for the rest of your life.
