A lot of times when people open a new bar or are throwing a big party, they always seem to forget something. It’s usually one of the “bartender tools” that are necessary but are also easily forgettable. The “bartenders tools” are very important, some are optional and you can live without, but in my experience when you forget lemons is when people want lemondrops or tequila shots. When you don’t have lime wedges, everybody orders Margaritas or Mojitos. So in the Holiday Spirit for the party season. I have put together a little checklist of “bartender tools” that you might need.

This is basically for those of you who wish to start their own home bar from scratch, are having a party, or just wish to practice at home. All of these tools will be supplied for you otherwise. These are just the bare minimums to get by on, you of course will want to add stuff as your creativity, knowledge, and experience progress.

AT THE BAR: This is where most of you “bartender tools” will be kept for easy access. A set of mixing tins an ice scoop, a bar spoon, a muddler,a glass rimmer, straws, and napkins. A fruit caddy with lime wedges, lemon wheels, maraschino cherries, orange slices, green olives, cocktail onions, and celery sticks. You might also need sugar packets, salt, pepper, celery salt, hot sauce, worcestershire sauce, and whipped cream. The more complex of a drink menu you have, the more garnishments you will need. I’ve seen everything from pop-rocks to jalapenos.

BEHIND THE BAR: To cover your mixers that you will need for the average crowd you will need: Orange juice (OJ), Pineapple juice (PJ), Cranberry juice(CJ),Grapefruit Juice (GJ), Tomato juice, ½ & 1/2 or cream, Sour-mix, Grenadine, Rose’s Lime Juice, Coke, Lemon- Lime Soda(7), Club Soda, Tonic Water, Ginger Ale, Strawberry Daiquiri mix, Peach daiquiri mix, Pina Colada Mix, and Margarita Mix.

THE WELL: Your “well” is your speed rail right behind your bar where you keep your most requested liquors. They are usually the cheapest off-brand of these liquors. These are the commonly used liquors for HAPPY HOUR specials known as well drinks. Every bartender sets up their well and speed rail differently but I go with what I have been taught as the traditional well set-up. From left to right I follow the old acronym: “Virgin Girls Run With Big Studs To Town.” Which reminds me: Vodka, Gin, Rum, Whiskey, Bourbon, Scotch, Tequila, Triple- Sec. This set up is especially handy for making Long Islands and Margaritas. You’ll see what I mean once you are standing back there.

THE BAR: The liquors you choose to carry are all up to you. I suggest visiting a local corporate restaurant and building your inventory off of their set-up.

What to serve? That’s up to you. If you run or own an establishment then you need to be able to cover pretty much any drink imaginable. But for a private party, I suggest going over a drink menu (there are FREE ones on-line) and finding 40-50 drinks that you can make with less than 10 different liquors.

Fencing Parries Classified – The Classical French Foil Parries

The basic parries of the French school of the foil evolved from smallsword play in the 1700s with certain elements that clearly come from rapier play in the late 1500s and early 1600s, and even longsword technique of the 1400s. By the late 1800s the set of parries used in classical fencing were well established, parries that continue in use today in modern fencing.

The parry system of the classical period from the 1870s through the 1930s is distinguished by several elements. First, parries were developed to cover and protect lines, generally accepted as high and low lines horizontally separated and inside and outside lines vertically separated. The area of these lines varied with the foil target area, which was not firmly established to a single standard until the elimination of the waist length target for women’s foil in the 1950s. That also meant that the way in which the parries were executed, especially for the low line parries, also varied to some degree throughout the period.

Second, parries were defined by how the hand was held. The conventional view is that parries were either pronated (the weapon held with the knuckles of the hand uppermost) or supinated (held with the knuckles on the bottom of the hand and the palm of the hand and tips of the fingers uppermost). This is not completely true. The pronated parries were certainly held with the knuckles uppermost. However, as early as the 1870s the supinated parry was also held in the modern thumb upward and fingers to the inside line position, termed a middle position. As a practical matter the thumb upward position is physically stronger, reduces stress on the arm, and is more tolerant of errors in point control than is a pure supinated position.

By the late 1880s two standard parry systems were in use – one pronated and the other supinated or middle position. Each achieved the same basic goal, complete coverage of the four lines (high inside, high outside, low outside, and low inside. Depending on the fencing master and the date, either both systems were taught, one or the other system was dominant, or some mix of the two systems was preferred.

The supinated or middle position system included the following parries:

… Sixth – to protect the high outside line.

… Eighth – to protect the low outside line.

… Seventh – to protect the low inside line.

… Fourth – to protect the high inside line.

The pronated system included the following parries:

… First – to protect the high inside line with some capability to protect the low inside line.

… Second – to protect the low outside line.

… Third – to protect the high outside line.

… Fifth – to protect the low inside line with some capability to protect the high inside line.

The classical fencer who wishes to take a traditional approach to learning classical technique might well start by learning the pronated system first. Pronated parries were very important to the earlier smallsword play, were in common use in the early to middle 1800s, and continued in general use throughout the classical period. Perhaps the easier system to master for the person exploring classical fencing is the middle position system of 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Under any conditions, the purely supinated system is the least easy to master and should probably be the last explored.

A player scores points when he manages to touch his weapon into his opponent’s body. The case of scoring depends on the kind of weapon used. When using epee, you can score points if you are able to touch any parts of your opponent’s body using the sword. In saber, you are only allowed to touch the tip of your sword in the upper torso. While in the foil, a score can only be valid if you are able to touch your opponent’s trunk which is located above the groin and below the collar.


The fencer commits foul if he uses the unarmed hand to defend or attack. He also commits foul when he leaves the battle area or the piste while avoiding the touch. In fencing you should obey the orders of referee to avoid a foul. First fouls means a warning while the second foul scores as a point for your opponent.

Residential houses and commercial property are popping up all the time. But if you have a history of low credit rating, bankruptcy, or foreclosures and are looking to borrow conventional loans, you’re in trouble. Price tags are spinning out of control and few can afford them. Even traditionally cheaper locations in LA, such as San Fernando Valley, see rents climbing to record highs with prices in the Vally, for instance, witnessing a 7.4 percent increase!

As regards real estate prices in Los Angeles for the coming year: The most recent market report by Marcus & Millichap says that this year’s asking rents citywide were up 7.8 percent to an average of $1,873 per month and the company reports that 2016 will be no better with rents climbing to 4.8 percent overall.

And if you want to know how much median homes in Los Angeles cost? Here’s the shocker: The price of an LA single-family house has jumped 5.2 percent this year in contrast to median incomes that hover around 2.9 percent. Marcus & Millichap half-jokingly state that Los Angeles seems to want its residents to rent homes rather than own them. So it seems! Few Los Angelesians are going to own their own homes giving these gloomy statistics.

Unsurprisingly, apartments are the new market for real estate agents prowling the streets of Los Angeles. Real estate firm Douglas Elliman’s latest market reports show that apartment vacancy rates have fallen to 2.7 percent, even in hot development neighborhoods like Downtown LA, while more than 5,200 new rentals have come online in LA, and 2,700 of those were in the Downtown district. There are now more than 15,000 units under construction through 2017 and Marcus & Millichap say that every section of town will receive more than 1,000 units in 2016.

Here’s a breakdown of Los Angeles area by area so you can see how the real estate field lies.

1. San Fernando Valley

  • Rents are up an average of 7.4 percent.
  • Average asking rent price in the Northeast Valley is up 15.1 percent, coming in at $1,438 per month. Other areas in the Valley experienced smaller increases in average rents: the Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena area saw a 6.8 percent increase, to $2,016 per month, and the Sherman Oaks/North Hollywood/Encino markets experienced a 9.5 percent increase to $1,503 per month.
  • In the last 12 months, only about 980 new rental units were added to Valley’s stock, down from 2,250 the year before. 2016 should see an increase in new apartments though, as 3,100 are expected to be added to the market next year.

2. Central Los Angeles (Downtown, Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire

  • Rents in Central LA were up 6.2 percent on average over the past year
  • Downtown rents were up only 5.3 percent to an average of $2,158 per month. 2,800 new rental units were built in Central LA during the last year
  • Vacancy rates in Downtown came in at 3.7 percent compared to Hollywood’s 2.6 percent. As a result Downtown offered concessions on more than 10 percent of units to entice renters to sign a lease.

3. Westside Los Angeles

  • Rents were up 6.8 percent in the last quarter averaging $2,750 per month.
  • Average rents in Santa Monica/Marina Del Rey climbed above $3,000 for the first time ever, up 6.0 percent to hit $3,132 per month.
  • Only 460 new apartments were built on the Westside during the past year, with nearly half of those being built in and around Santa Monica
  • 2016 will see the completion of more than 1,000 new rental units in the area, with more than 700 of them built in Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey.

4. South Bay of Los Angeles

  • Rents along LA’s southern coast increased to 8.8 percent.
  • Beach rents increased 8.7 percent to an average of $1,620 per month.
  • 950 new units were added to the rental market during the past year
  • More than 820 of those rentals qualified as affordable housing.

The bottom line is this…

The Los Angeles housing market is hitting record levels of craziness with ever-rising housing – and rental – prices discouraging people from buying. The number of sales stays flat as prices rise. This doesn’t mean that agents have a rough time and are doomed to poverty. On the contrary, if you are a real estate agent in LA, you may want on focus on apartments and on rentals since these seem to be in demand.

Sellers, also, have a booming-for-sale market where everything is busting record high from condos and single-family houses to sales closed. Otherwise, you may want to focus on persuading people to live in baskets…

The Two Types of Gymnastics Foam Pits: Loose Foam Vs Resi-Pit

Gymnastics safety-pits are a very important training tool. Every gymnastics academy should have at least one foam pit. Gymnastics pits are extremely necessary for optional gymnastics skills and levels. There are two types of gymnastics foam pits, loose foam pits and resi-pits.

A loose foam pit is built into the ground. It is usually 6-8 feet deep. The walls are covered by polyethylene foam that is usually glued to the concrete. The foam that covers the covers the concrete must be over an inch thick to decrease the chance of injuries. The bottom of a pit is lined with thick crash mats or a trampoline bed. Pits with a trampoline bed in it is known as a bungee-pit. A bungee-pit is usually placed a few feet above the pit floor. This allows it room to give without hitting the concrete. If you have a bungee-pit it is still a good idea to have a gymnastics mat in the very bottom in case any bungees snap or someone bottoms out. Once the loose foam-pit is correctly constructed it is filled with foam blocks. Foam blocks are made out of polyurethane and are nonflammable. They come in two different sizes, 6 and 8 inch.

The second type of gymnastics safety-pit is known as a resi-pit. A resi-pit is a pit that is made out of thick polyurethane mats that are covered by polyester vinyl that is extremely heavy duty. The resi-pit is about 32 inches in thickness. The bottom of the resi-pit is made out of denser foam and gets softer as it goes up; this eliminates gymnast from bottoming out. A resi-pit can be used for in-ground or above-ground gymnastics training.

Most gymnastics academies use both types. A loose foam pit is usually used first when introducing a new skill. After the gymnast masters the new skill in the loose foam she will move on to the resi-pit.

Both types of gymnastics safety-pits are a very important part of any gymnastics academy; make sure you know which is best to use in each situation.

Bloons the Original – Interesting Levels – 8, 13, 23 and 30

Level 8 (Holy Moley)

14 balloons are required to complete the level. Another first, here we have a “wall” with three brown colored bricks. Your first dart needs to take out one of those; just hitting one with the dart will destroy it. Now all you have to do is fire the other dart through the hole in the wall and it should strike a pin bloon and pop all of the others. A fairly easy level to fully complete.

Level 13 (Reservoir)

25 balloons required to complete the level. This level will test your skills at correctly judging both power and angle to make accurate arcs. Ideally with the first dart, have it enter through the furthest hole in the wall to hit the pin bloons. If that is proving too hard you can have it enter through the second hole from the right which is wider and take out many of the bloons through that one. The two hardest shots are the first, to hit the pin bloons, and the one required to get through the first hole to clear the vertical group closest to the monkey. A score in the 90% range is common on this level.

Level 23 (Ouchie)

35 balloons required to complete the level. Possibly the hardest level we have encountered so far. We also encounter, for the first time, “mine bloons”, along with the old favorite, ice bloons. You will see a row of mine bloons at the top, and a row of ice bloons on the third row down. The arc you achieve is the most important thing. It is practically impossible to shoot the dart and miss all the mines and all the ice bloons. However, if you get the arc just right, you can get away with popping some mines, and/or ice ones but you need to have enough force to hit the pin ones. You have a rubber wall to the right and a solid wall to the left. By aiming correctly you can send the dart through the top couple of layers, deflect it off the rubber wall directly into the pin bloons. A 70% score, or thereabouts, is about normal for this level.

Level 30 (Ice Bounce)

28 balloons required to complete the level. After the brief respite of an easy level we return to a more complex one. There are two ways to accomplish this. On the first shot try to hit the top ice bloon, also getting as many as possible of the ones below that one. Make sure there is at least one of the frozen bloons to use to bounce off with the next shot, or just go ahead and reset the level. Bounce off the frozen bloon and into the pack of bombs which will explode all those. The alternate method which is sometimes preferred is to shoot as hard as possible at the left side of the lower rubber wall and the vibration will set off the bomb bloons ands destroy all those to the left of the rubber wall. On the subsequent shot you can take out as many of the remaining bloons as possible while avoiding the ice ones. Aim for a score around 90% and you will complete the level.

Batting cage batting practice is a great way to improve batting skill, bat speed and batter confidence. This article discusses three Hitting Drills That Make Batting Cage Work More Productive. The three drills are the MOVE UP, COUNT ADJUSTMENT and LINE DRIVE CONTEST. These drills are great ways to get maximum benefits from your batting cage workouts. The three drills are:

Move Up Batting Drill

Purpose: Used to improve bat speed, visual concentration, and batter confidence.

Description: The MOVE-UP hitting drill: The batter learns to see and hit the ball quicker out of the machine or batters hand. Before the drill begins, 4 spots are marked on the floor, in measured distances of 40, 35, 30, and 25 feet. The machine or pitcher should maintain a safe medium speed velocity during this drill. The accuracy of your pitching machine must be checked and rechecked during the drill for safety purposes. The spots are the locations at which the batter will take a certain number of swings. The batter hits 4 balls at each spot and then move closer to the machine or pitcher at the next spot.

Procedure: The batter hits 4 to 6 balls at each spot, then moves to the next spot closer to the machine or pitcher. The machine or pitcher should not deliver the next pitcher until the batter assumes a proper stance, triggers or loads to the proper launch position, and has visual focus on the pitcher or machine. The batter starts the drill at 40 feet and hits at all spots until he has hit 4 to 6 balls at each spot, ending with ball hit at the closest spot to the pitcher, 25 feet. Distances can be shortened or made longer to meet the needs of your players.

Coaching Points: Sometimes you may have the player hit two balls at each spots moving toward the machine and then hit two balls at each spot moving away from the machine, until two balls are hit at each location or distance. This process makes the batter adjust to varying changes in pitch speed. This drill is great for teaching batters to stay-back and let the ball in.

Count Adjustment Drill

Purpose: The drill is great for teaching young hitters to make adjustments in their approach at the plate based on the current count. Batters learn to be properly aggressive for the following counts or situations 0-0, 2-0, 0-2, 3-1, runner at 3rd with 1 or less outs, and hit-in-run.

Procedure: In a normal cage hitting, the players would be hitting every pitch in the correct and proper direction based on the pitch location. To change the approach, a coach calls a count such as 2-0. For the next two pitches, the batter will be properly aggressive as he would with that count in a game. Of course in this situation, the batter is looking for a pitch in that perfect spot. If the ball is at that anticipated location, the batter attacks, the ball. If the ball is not in that spot the batter will hold off the pitch and adjust to the new count of 2-1 or 3-0. If the coach calls, Runner at 3rd, the batter is looking for a pitch up to drive deep enough for a score or tag and score. The batter will try to lift the ball and drive a deep fly ball to the outfield. If the coach calls for a Hit-and-Run swing, the batter will execute a hit-and-run approach at the plate and hit the ball in a direction that would be behind the runner.

Line Drive Contest Drill

After a session of batting cage workouts, it is good to end the day with a competitive and fun line-drive hitting contest. An assistant coach will do the pitching. The coach is protected by a L-screen. The player should only swing at great pitches. The contest is to see which player hits the most line-drives in a row. A line-drive is a ball that hits the side walls, back wall, or pitchers L-Screen hard and directly off the batters bat. The hit ball can not touch the top of the cage in front of the pitching protective L-Screen. As long as the batter hits line-drives with each swing, the batter adds one to his score for each line-drive hit. This drill is a good method of teaching batters to perform and hit under pressure.

Advantages of owning a Log Home or Cabin

Possible Disadvantages of owning a Log Cabin or Home

Maintenance & Upkeep – this is an area that can surprise new owners. Log homes have unique maintenance requirements as compared to traditional stick-built homes. Note, though, that doesn’t mean that maintaining one is “more difficult”. It’s just different. The logs may require regular caulking/chinking to ensure that water & air stay out. Staining or sanding may be needed as well. Since the logs may expand and contract as the temperature changes, settling can occur. However, some issues caused by this can be addressed during the construction process, so if you’re building, make sure you hire a reputable and experienced builder. If you’re buying a pre-built home, be sure to involve a qualified inspector that has a good knowledge of log homes.

Pests can be a problem – bugs (most commonly carpenter bees and termites) may want to make the logs their homes and/or feed on the wood. These can be effectively managed with regular care and attention.

Insurance may be more challenging to get – don’t assume that your regular carrier will insure your log home. Most big-name insurance companies do provide coverage. Be sure to do your research and find a reputable company that offers log home insurance. Also, because many are located in rural areas that are further from fire departments & hydrants, you may see higher fire insurance rates.

Be careful with kits – if you’re building new, a log home kit may seem convenient. However, since not all kits are created equally, they may also present challenges. Kits are designed to fit perfectly together like a puzzle for a pre-designed plan. This leaves little room for creative changes you may want along the way. Hammock Hanging Inside Without Using the Walls

As the popularity of indoor hammocks for sleeping, for relaxing, and for décor purposes soar, you may find yourself in the position of wanting to hang a hammock indoors, but not having adequately supportive construction, or not having permission to mar the walls or ceilings.  Apartments in particular frequently have restrictions for such use. So how does one proceed?

The first, and perhaps the easiest solution, is to use a hammock stand.  Since the Mexican, Central American, and South American style hammocks that are most appropriate for indoor use don’t fit well in the standard hammock stand you will need to use a stand such as the Vario Stand, which is adjustable in length and height, and can accommodate these hammocks. 

  • The pros of using a stand include no construction and easy portability.  The cons include having a large object taking up floor space.

The second solution would apply in a situation where the structure does not lend itself to hanging the hammock where you want it; but where there is no prohibition against attaching construction to the walls and ceilings. We used this method in one of our hammock shops where the walls were a little iffy.

  • First you will need structural lumber such as two 4x4s which are long enough to span from ceiling to floor.
  • Then you will use angle braces to attach the 4x4s to the ceiling joists and flooring. If you can, you might countersink some long wood screws into the wall studs.
  • This is the basic method.  You may have to adapt to your specific situation.
  • The pros of this method include the possibility of a sturdy support just where you want it in a situation that might otherwise not work out.
  • The cons, of course, are that it is a bit of work, and you have marred the ceiling and floor.  This is a method to use for long term installation.

The third solution is for use when you desire a sturdy installation but cannot attach to the room structure or mar any of the surfaces. 

  • The process here is to use a pair of Ellis screw jacks to compress two 4x4s between floor and ceiling. 
  • You will want to protect the floor and ceiling by using sections of 2×6 or 2×8 lumber to distribute the load.
  • Screw the bases of the jacks into the 2x8s.  
  • You will then span the cross room distance with two 2x4s strapped together at intervals.  These will need to be attached to the tops of the verticals using screws and straight straps.
  • The jacks are rated to 6,000 pounds at the 7 foot extension, and the 4×4 verticals are rated to 2,000 pounds, while the spanning 2x4s [doubled] are rated to 800 pounds. 
  • The pros of this installation include having a very sturdy arrangement which can be easily removed if necessary, leaving no trace behind.
  • The cons may involve problems with the WAF (wife acceptance factor), if applicable.
