Using Graphic Design Inspiration and Avoiding Plagiarism

One of the most difficult things to do is gain inspiration without copying or stealing someone else's ideas. Because we are surrounded by designs and art in everyday lives, trying to find that fine line between inspiration and theft proves to be problematic at times. Especially when you take into account that all designs are essentially influenced by the earlier created works of art we are surrounded by. The Internet alone has millions upon millions of graphic design inspiration at your fingertips. These days, with so many resources so readily available, finding inspiration for a design is pretty easy. The difficult part is taking the idea and making something new of it. How do you do that, you ask; by incorporating various concepts, approaches and design features together.

When doing a search for graphic design inspiration, do not stop at one idea. Keep your searches going for additional designs that are related or similar in color, content and structure to what you are looking for. The objective is not to choose one design and duplicate it, instead find a collection of elements that can work together in a different way. As you're doing your search you should be looking at the design and picking it apart to see if any piece can be meshed with another to create something fresh. Your ultimate goal is to combine the best components of each of these, creating a new design that inspires you.

Once you've gathered some inspirational ideas, take a deer look and study the fine details that really make them stand out and catch your eye. Look for typography, light effects and gradients; these are the subtle details that bring the design to life. You should be asking yourself, "Why do I love this design so much?" Once you have it pinpointed it will be easy for you to create a new vision with different concepts. When you're finished, it should not look like an imitation of any of the other designs. It should be a renovated design created with the contribution of them all. You must work to fuse the different elements with common stylistic methods to transform your design into something brand new.

There is no guidebook that teaches you how to search for graphic design inspiration and not commit plagiarism, but there are some forthright ways to avoid it. By using the strategies mentioned above we can all help the circulation of new ideas, creating new inspiration for everyone.

How to Submit Cartoons for Publication

The goal for any cartoonist is to see your work in print. Whether it's in a magazine or newspapers, there's nothing quite like having your efforts validated by a real, by-gosh genuine cartoon editor. My first published cartoon was in a nationally published magazine. It only paid me 25 bucks, but the value of being a published cartoonist was incalculable! Here's a quick primer on how to prepare a single-panel cartoon for submission.

Neat Drawing

Once you have worked out the details in your brainstorming session, you need to transfer your drawing to a clean sheet of 8 x x 11 inch sheet of paper. Regular printer paper is fine – as long as it's clean. Do not get cutesy with the size of the paper or the color. Bigger paper is a pain for editors who have to pour through lots of submissions, and submitting your work on brightly-colored fluorescent paper will not make it stand out – at least not in a good way. It screams amateur and will get it thrown in the trash.

I will often transfer the drawings straight out of my sketchpad onto printer paper via a light box. I like this process because it preserves the spontaneity and comical whimsy of the sketch which is sometimes lost when a piece is overworked in an attempt to make it "perfect".

Using a Light Box

You can get a light box at your local craft store for next to nothing, or you can go to the internet and look up plans for building your own. Simply tape the cartoon rough in place and then tape your clean sheet of paper over top. Turn on the light and you can clearly see the original through the paper. Transfer the drawing using a black pen. This also eliminates the need for erasing pencil marks which can leave your work messy.

Do not worry about drawing the border around your cartoon. The editor will do that if they need one – often they do not.

The Artist's Market

You can find lots of publications that accept freelance cartoon submissions by looking through a current edition of The Artist and Graphic Designer's Market . This book contains lists of magazines and what they pay, as well as the names of editors and submission details. Study them and then submit accordingly. This is important because different magazines require different things. Some have a minimum number of cartoons that you have to meet; many list things that they are looking for as well as things that they do not want to see.

Mail 'em Out

Once you have your submission packet ready, it's time to send them in. Most publications ask that you send in copies of your originals. Just make sure that you send them in on decent quality paper – not the thin paper most public libraries use. Each packet will require two manila envelopes: one for the packet itself, and another that you will put your own address and postage on. This is commonly called the SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) and is a courtesy you offer the editor so he / she can conveniently send back your artwork (along with a check for any they decided to buy!). Do not worry about any kind of cover letter – they know what a submission packet is for, and your cartons will speak for themselves.

Once you've sent the packet in, it's time to get started on the next set of submissions. Keep doing this week after week and you'll always get that first sale!

How To Build A Rat Rod – From Beginner To Expert

So you have finally decided to build your Rat Rod car and you feel that you know what to do, but if you are smart, you will always be open to suggestions. Knowing the basics will help you get a good start.

For those of you who are new at this, keep it simple. No one wants their project to remain a project, and not a driver. Beginners should save up a bit more money and try to get something that runs and drives. Bodywork and modifications can be done at your leisure, as long as your Rat Rod doesn’t have huge holes in it. Spend more time customizing your Rat Rod than fixing it. Messing with a car when you don’t have the experience is very tough, and although you might have some friends to help, chance are they will not always be there to help you. Don’t get a Rat Rod that has electrical issues or motor problems. It’s most likely that someone has “patched” it up to get it sale-able and now you are stuck with someone else’s headache. Don’t fall in love with a piece of junk. Let your brain choose your new Rat Rod, not your emotions.

For those of you that have been doing this for a while, here are a few tips for you. Keeping the cool factor with Flathead Fords and 392 Chrysler Hemi’s are great. Nothing show a better Rat Rod then with period correct parts arranged and selected in a tasteful manner. Try not to find anything old and rusty and just weld it to the car or bolt it to the motor. Having a unique powered car is cool though. There is nothing wrong with the old reliable Chevy small block, and with all the aftermarket parts out there, you can make it look correct for that era. Big blown motors are not necessary as Rat Rods are not made to be driven at the strip, but if you have the means, you can do it, but like we always say, keep it period correct. Find a blower from the early 40’s or 50’s. Big fancy drum brakes from old Buick’s are popular. Use your imagination and keep it cool.

Whether you are new at this, or are just looking for other ideas for a new build, make a plan, and follow through with it and build the Rat Rod of your dreams.

Piracy on the Sea of Cortez

An early morning dream-voice told me Chamula was back. As hard as I had tried not to, I had fallen in love with the captain of a co-op shrimping trawler, Joven, out of Guaymas, Mexico. We met six months earlier in a little palapa restaurant at the mouth of the Mulege River. For months now, I had been having the most amazing experiences. The morning of the dream my sister and I talked over coffee, and I told her how much I had wanted to go out with him on this latest expedition. However, Chamula could not promise when he would return and he thought it best I do go. Just then Alisabeth's boyfriend, Marcos, came through the door, his fiercely Yaki Indian face looking even more so today. Gravely, he reported that the Joven had been robbed; the crew held at gun point by the Mexican mafia!

The story unfolded. Shrimp boats worked nights and rested during the day, the crew catching well deserved sleep. They had anchored off the coast of Sinaloa, Mexico, and it was then they were boarded by six men with guns. Forced to take off all their clothes, they were thrown into the hold. The 600 kilos of shrimp, their personal belongings, and money were taken.

We hurried out to the ship, and I will never forget the sight of them: bare-chested, ratty sweatpants, and hatless, squinting against the sun. At that moment it would have been hard to tell the difference between the banditos and the crew. Everyone looked really rough. We were told that this was a common occurrence, because of the wealth the shrimp represented, as valuable as gold, the Mexican mafia regularly took its share. Alisabeth looked at me with great big eyes. "You wanted to be on this boat trip." I looked at Chamula. He nodded. I could not even picture the horror I would have faced, or the likelihood I would not have returned.

The blustery north winds kept the boat grounded for several days. Since the captain and crew were paid according to the amount of shrimp bought in, it was critical to get back to work and make up the loss. I still could not get myself to say goodbye and head back to the states, so when he asked me if I wanted to go back out, I foolishly said yes. Alisabeth reminded me that it was an "experience of a lifetime" and we both laughed at the old joke. Back on board, I watched as the palm trees receded in the distance and the water cactored the last golden rays of the sun; I was already having grave doubts about my decision. Chamula had not told me where we were going or how long we would be gone. I found him at the helm and it was then I learned the truth. We would be motoring for two days, and the first mate mentioned that we were headed to Sinaloa! What? Chamula sheepishly affirmed that it was true, not wanting to tell me because he did not want me to return to the states. We were headed to the coast of Sinaloa, exactly where they had just been robbed!

"Pendejo!" I retorted angrily, swearing like a Mexican sailor. Out on the deck, I flopped down and leaned back on the salt encrusted nets. I was in shock. I felt like I had volunteered to be kidnapped. All this because I did not have the guts to say goodbye. Well, I had made the choice, and the choice put me here. Done. Now the only thing to do was either stay mad or have an adventure. Since it was such a small world aboard a boat in the middle of the sea, I thought adventure was the better choice.

Chamula followed me. I did not understand how he could put me in harm's way, and told him so. His answer was very pragmatic. He assured me that since all the shrimp were gone and the mafia knew that, we would be safe from the threat for a while. The seas began to pick up the further south we went. I started taking heavy doses of Dramamine and went to sleep. When I got up the waves had turned dark blue with deep troughs and white caps. I brought coffee forward to Chamula and asked if he could show me where we were. Might as well learn something during my voyage into hell. He was all too happy to see I was not holding a grudge. In the evening we had gone south to Loreto then southeast across the Gulf in the night. Now we were near mainland Mexico. I sat on the step of the wheelhouse, sipped coffee, and watched the whales spouting.

At 4:00 pm the rumble of the engine went silent. We tied up at the stern of another co-op boat in the middle of nowhere. Well, I knew we were in the Gulf, but I could see no land. The sea was a constant relentless motion. Worried, I asked the Captain if we were not going near the coast. No, he admitted, this was much different from Mulege. It was illegally we would see land, because the gulf was so shallow here that boats could anchor right in the middle without a problem. I thought the boats might not have a problem, but I certainly did.

The next morning I crawled from the bunk and the motion of the Joven thread my body against the cabin wall. "Mierda!" Another day of heavy seas. I surprised how many days I could keep myself drugged and sleep. It was then I surprised if I could get Chamula to let me off the boat. When I asked he said he had a friend in Los Glorious, Sinaloa who could probably help. And just like that the captain pulled anchor and we headed to the mainland. I felt horrid to be the reason that everything was changing course. My hermanos looked at it as just another lark, an "aventura" in the moment, and if you were a woman stuck in the middle of the gulf, their attitude had a lot going for it.

Once moored off Los Glorious, the wonders of Mexican transport became clear. Everyone knew the Joven, and a panga was already on the way out. The seas were turbulent. I literally jumped from the ship to the smaller boat below as both were tossed around. The pescador handling the launch maneuvered through the breaking surf. And like a surfer, riding the curl, he would pause a moment, and then at the perfect time he would use the force of the water to propel us forward. We would glide on the force until another wave would reach us. We rode the momentum all the way to the beach.

After pulling the boat above the tide line, we walked into the barrio of adobe brick houses. Chickens and dogs ran loose everywhere. We stopped for cold drinks at a little tienda. The sun was hot and penetrating. Sitting under a shade tree near the Sinaloa River, the old friends talked while a lone gringa looked on. In Mexico there was a time to visit and a time to go. You never thought about going when you visited. But when it was time we had to go back out to the trawler to get my belongings. We jumped back into the panga and roared through the Mangrove trees out the gaping mouth of the Sinaloa River into the smashing surf. The breaking waves hit the bottom of the boat so hard we had to hang on with both hands, not to be thrown out. I knew Chamula was expecting me to be afraid, but when he looked over at me, I was grinning so big we both must have looked like loons. I was "muy loca" for more! And that day I earned the title, "Pirata."

Back aboard the heaving decks of the Joven, I went in to pack. Chamula would not let me to go alone, and so we both went to the beach to meet his friend. We rode in the back of an open truck all the way to Los Mochis airport. It was a tearful goodbye. My life had been substantially changed in these months. I had lived and loved life fully. Yet I had to leave and it hurt. Looking down on the shimmering gulf waters, I picked up my journal to keep the memories fresh. Like a giant backbone of ancient volcanic rock the Baja peninsula rose up out of the water. Slowly, I closed the journal to prepare for the landing in La Paz.

What Sherry Argov Doesn’t Know About Getting Him to Propose

Sherry Argov, New York Times bestselling author of “Why Men Marry Bitches,” and “Why Men Love Bitches,” obviously knows a lot about men, or at least her readers like what she has to say enough to make her a bestselling author. While you can certainly read her books and get some answers – do you really want to resort to being a “bitch” to get him to propose? She’s very honest in her book titles and says “Why Men Marry Bitches: A Woman’s Guide to Winning Her Man’s Heart.”

Note the keywords she uses: “A Woman’s Guide.”

Answer this: who is better equipped to tell you how to win YOUR man’s heart – a woman – or a man? While there are definitely women in the world who will show you “how to please your man,” as evidenced by the many raunchy videos on the Internet, getting him to propose is an entirely different manner.

You can believe it or not – when it comes to marriage – a man isn’t ruled by his sexual organs. Sex and marriage aren’t in the same bucket for a man. Yes, sex comes with marriage, but it’s not the reason he gets married. The reasons a man gets married are much more complicated than that and they will vary with the man, but for most, it’s because his “gut feelings” are telling him “she’s the one.”

Getting him to that point won’t work if you’re trying to be a “bitch” or trying to manipulate him. Coercing or cajoling him won’t work either and will end up with him not only resenting you, but pulling away. A man’s gut instincts have long served him. His gut instincts don’t go through his brain for analysis like a woman’s intuition does, they are hard-wired into his entire being. It’s how he’s survived as a “hunter,” and made it through wars throughout the centuries. When his “gut instincts” kick in, he automatically responds, period.

Authors loved by the publishing industry because of high book sales are one thing. But anyone can claim “expert” status, write a book these days and be published on Amazon. Who would you go to get advice on “winning” his heart, expert or not — men with heart or a woman of unknown relationship status?

What does your “women’s intuition” tell you? Follow it for sure. Just like a man and his “gut instincts,” following your women’s intuition will never lead you astray.

Home Renovations: Laying Carpet on Stairs

Due to the frequent changes in elevation, it is harder to lay carpet stairs, than, say, your hallway. But do not let that put you off; if you have successfully rented other rooms, then why not the stairs?

Stairs can be carpeted with fitted carpet, on what's known as a runner – a strip of carpet.

Fitting runners to stairs

A woven carpet runner also enables the carpet to be moved occasionally to equalise wear. Old-fashioned stair rods with side clips might be used to hold a runner in place and form part of the stair decor, but it is now a lot more usual to use gripper strips. Unique pin-less grippers are offered for use with foam-backed carpets; the carpet is held in tight jaws. The wooden strips are utilized in pairs, one behind the tread, and one at the bottom of the riser, or you may get a metal version that's already formed into a right angle.

Cut the strips to length, this is crucial: 38mm shorter than the width of the carpet utilizing tin-snips or secateurs for wooden strips, or a hacksaw for the metal type. Nail them into place, omitting the bottom riser. The gap between each pair of wood strips should be just enough to squeeze the carpet down into. Cut the underlay to fit between the rods and tack close to the rods, omitting the bottom tread. No underlay is needed with foam-backed carpet.

Carpeting the bottom step

With a runner, an extra length of carpet is included so that it can be moved up to even out the wear taken on the treads: this is folded under the bottom step. The pile needs to run down the stairs to stop uneven shading and promote longer wear. Begin at the bottom of the stairs. Tack the end of the carpet face-down to the bottom tread, at the back close to the gripper. Lay it down over the tread to the bottom of the last riser, fold it back and tack the fold to the riser and tread. Run the carpet up the stairs, pulling it over the gripper rods and pushing it down between them with a bolster. It should join the landing carpet at the top of the last riser. If there is no carpet on the landing take the stair runner over the top of the final riser, turn under the edge and tack down.

Fitting carpet to the stairs

The fixings for a fitted stair carpet are as for a runner. The additional length of woven carpet is not needed at the bottom, though an underlay will need to be fitted to all of the steps. The gripper rods really should be the full width of the stairs. Fit the carpet from the top of the flight. The landing carpet will need to overlap on to the stairs and down to the bottom of the uppermost riser. The stair carpet should then be stretched over the gripper rods as usual and pushed down between them. Additionally, it will have to be trimmed to fit at the edges. No fixings are required at the edges.

Carpeting spiral stairs

Where the stairs go round a bend, gripper rods can not be used in the usual way. The carpet may be cut or folded to fit the turn.

Woven carpet: Fit the gripper rods just to the treads on winding stairs. Fold the spare carpet, with the fold falling down, and tack it to the bottom of the riser at 75mm intervals. Lay the carpet on top of next rod up and repeat the folding and tracking procedure.

Foam-backed carpet: Omit the pin-less rods altogether on spiral stairs. Tack the carpet to the tread, preferably at the back so that the tacks are not too obvious. Fold down the surplus and tack neatly on the underside of the riser.

What to Burn in Your Chiminea

Having an outdoor fire on a cool night can allow you to enjoy the outdoors and provide for a cozy area to gather and relax. A Chiminea makes a wonderful outside fireplace that is both heat giving and attractive. They are also portable, making it possible to use them just about anywhere in your garden or patio. If you are thinking of purchasing a Chiminea and are wondering what you can burn in it, the answer is pretty simple and I will outline the main types of fuel available in this article.

Charcoal

If you are using a Chiminea for the first time and wish to use it for cooking then it’s probably best to start with charcoal. You can purchase charcoal briquettes which are self lighting and require little or no effort to get going. Simply light with a match or lighter and away you go. It’s best to leave the fire burning for about 20 minutes if you are planning to cook anything.

Wood

Since Chimineas were made to burn wood, then wood is an obvious choice. It also produces the least number of sparks which makes it a safe option. Generally, hardwoods are the best to use, and if you like aromatic wood there are several different kinds to choose from.

Pinon wood gives off a wonderful pine scent and also chases misquotes away, making enjoying your fire even more pleasant. Cedar, especially red cedar, also gives off a wonderful aroma as does apple wood. In addition, if you want a bit more aroma in your fire you can dry orange or apple slices and add them in with your logs. You can also try mature pine cones. The Mayan people of Central America used ‘Ocote’ in their clay Chiminea which serves two purposes: it is a natural firelighter and also gives off a pleasant aroma when lit due to its high resin content.

Eco logs are a cheap, simple alternative and are made from compressing saw dust to form a log shape. They usually come in a wax paper bag which you can light directly and let burn in your Chiminea without the need for any other firelighter. They can burn for up to 2 hours so are worth having around to get a fire started, you can then add other fuel later on.

Other Sources of Heat You Can Use in Your Chiminea

You can purchase other kinds of fuel for your Chiminea as well. Propane and gas inserts are designed so that you can burn gas in your cast iron or steel outdoor fireplace. You can then remove the insert when you want to use wood. Another alternative to wood is alcohol gel. This burns cleanly and only produces water as a byproduct, making it safe for use indoors. However, if you are going to use a Chiminea indoors please use common sense when choosing where to position it and do not attempt to cook or add any other fuel as this could lead to a house full of smoke and possible asphyxiation.

What not to burn in your Chiminea

You should never burn treated wood or wood pellets. Treated wood gives off toxic fumes which can affect your health and wood pellets, such as those used in a wood pellet indoor stove, leave a long ash which can quickly build up causing you to spend more time cleaning out ash than enjoying your fire. Also avoid green wood, as it will not produce much fire but will cause a lot of smoke. Dry wood is always best to burn when using any type of wood fire. Never use gasoline or petroleum based accelerants to start your fire. These can be extremely dangerous and could even cause an explosion when used in an enclosed fireplace.

Most manufacturers will supply instructions and basic maintenance information with your Chiminea so please refer to the booklet provided. If in any doubt contact the supplier or the manufacturer direct and ask them for advice. And on a final note, if using a clay Chiminea always make sure that you place sand or stones in the bottom of it before adding the fuel as clay is prone to cracking with sudden changes in temperature.

Structural Analysis – Effective Way to Study Building's Behavior

Structural analysis is considered as a base of any construction project. It is a process that examines the physical integrity of any building structure. It is wise to analyze everything about your building structure before you actually start building it. This will make future construction activities a lot easier.

How your building structure will be, how it will react to certain external factors are the most common questions for any professional. Structural analysis – a calculation about behavior of any building with respect to certain laws and methods gives the perfect answer to such questions. It gives general information such as:

o Calculation of deformations
o Internal forces – how your building will react against heavy internal forces between various building components like beams, windows, stairs etc
o Stresses – How much capable is your building to deal with stresses
o Loads – Predicting about how well any building will withstand internal loads as well as external loads
o External forces – Structural analysis will give you detailed information about how your building will face external forces

This information is based on set of physical laws and mathematics required to study and predict the behavior of structures. Builders, contractors and engineers depend on structure analysis to render structurally sound plans and models. To implement an accurate structural analysis a user must determine information regarding structural loads, geometry, support conditions, and materials properties. In this way, one can easily build a behavior.

Also structural analysis has many applications to offer to construction industry such as:
• Use in structural steel plate girder, truss girder, gantries, industrial sheds etc.
• Wooden structures like fish repair centers, sheds, residential structures etc.
• Pre-stressed and Post-tensioned structures like parking structures
• Deteriorated structures
• Composite structures

Above mentioned applications of structural analysis reduce work load of builders, contractors and engineers. They become more familiar with their proposed building structure's behavior.

Why Do Guys Avoid Pretty Girls?

It has been said that men are visual creatures. And the feedback from other people is that you are pretty. Yet, it seems that guys resist approaching you! I know how it can drive your heart and mind crazy at times when you see other girls, who are clearly less pretty than you, happily loved by their boyfriends. To help you regain your sanity and courage to venture into the dating world again, I have written this article about ‘Why Do Guys Avoid Pretty Girls’. Please don’t give up hope of finding everlasting love yet. If I can do it, so can you. Finish reading this article – because it could save you a lot of heartache and despair…

The biggest reason why guys avoid pretty girls is because men won’t approach a woman unless they think there’s a 75% chance that she won’t reject him.

I am not sure how well you know this, but the feeling of being rejected – by any woman, pretty or not, downright sucks. No guy in his right mind enjoys being rejected. That is why a guy will avoid approaching a pretty woman, unless he gets the feeling she will be open and receptive to his advances. By this, I mean that she communicates to the world, or to a guy in particular that she is friendly and safe to approach.

Unfortunately, the media makes it even scarier for guys to muster up the courage to approach pretty women. Haven’t you seen shows that portray pretty girls as mean girls? It does not matter whether it is true, or whether it has ever happened to a guy before. With some compassion, you can understand how a guy could easily imagine a pretty girl shaming or embarrassing him in front of a crowd. It is even more terrifying if a guy has already had negative experiences of approaching less pretty girls!

So how can a pretty girl give guys the courage to approach her?

The biggest tip I can give to solve the issue of guys avoiding you, is to cultivate a look that feels friendly to men in general. My personal secret is to smile from within. Learning how to smile from within is a skill ANY woman can acquire. But don’t be fooled into thinking that you can just plaster a fake smile on your face. If you do that, you run the risk of looking TOO approachable, which will attract all kinds of strange men to you. The trick is to figure out a way to genuinely share your gentle, soft, feminine side with the world, as much as you can. It took me a fair bit of effort to transform myself from within. It will take you some effort too. But I guarantee that it is more than worth it, when you find a man who loves, cherishes and never wants to let go of you, because you are so feminine!

Dangers of Using Damaged Lumber – Home Construction

It’s not as common as it used to be, when large framing contractor’s would save money ordering damaged lumber or inferior building products. This might be a thing of the past in some areas, but there are still framing contractors and lumber companies who you need to be careful with, especially when the lumber they’re sending out to your job can cause an accident.

I’ve seen this happen too many times, the carpenters are working on a house and the contractor didn’t order enough lumber or ordered enough lumber, but a few of the pieces are damaged and the carpenters use them anyway, simply so that they can finish the home.

This isn’t going to ever be something that will benefit the other workers, especially if the structure of the house has been compromised. I have seen floor joist, roof rafters and structural beams that have large splits or knots in them and shouldn’t be used except for firewood, yet they are installed carelessly, simply because someone else doesn’t want to take the time to return the inferior lumber to get a new piece without any damage or flaws in it.

I have seen large knots in floor joist create safety hazards for other workers and other trades. Some of the damaged lumber that I have seen used by other carpenters, doesn’t just creates safety problems, I have seen them cause accidents. It’s simply not worth it to use damaged building materials, because you’re in a hurry or don’t have the time to replace the item properly.

If you’re dealing with a lumber company that continuously sends you out inferior lumber, I would advise you to explain your situation to them and if they will not respond properly, try to find another lumber yard to deal with.

Why House Mice Are Worse Than You Think

Property Loss Due to Infestation

Mice infestation of stored food generates greater loss than simply what the mice eat. In six months a pair of mice will eat about 4 pounds of food. These same mice will produce about 18,000 droppings from what they eat. Food contamination caused by this same pair of mice will be about 10 times the amount of food ateen. Suspected contamination will add to this loss by a significant amount.

Because of the commonplace food contamination, the government actually sanctions a certain amount of rodent hairs and droppings per quantities of food shipped for human consumption. Health inspectors work tirelessly to condemn food stores because of greater than allowable contamination.

House mice infestations also result in significant property damage beyond that of food stores. Fabrics, documents, books, and artwork all fall victim to the incessant gnawing of house mice. These rodents often gnaw at the insulation on electrical wires. This leads to estimated millions of dollars worth of damage in electrical fires each year. Many times these fires go reported as "cause unknown."

Carriers of Disease

House mice do not cause an impact as great as rats in their disease carrying potential when food contamination is not considered. However, their impact as disease vectors should not be ignored. House mice and the parasites they host are responsible for the transmission of numerous diseases.

Salmonella

Infected rodent feces can contaminate food stores and lead to the spread of a particular type of bacterial food poisoning, called salmonellosis. Mice most likely are more prolific transmitters of this disease than rats.

Rickettsial Pox

Rickettsia akari is a specie of bacteria that causes a chicken pox type rash. This disease is transmitted across mice and then to people through the bite of the house mouse mite that infests them.

Meningitis

A viral infection of house mice, known as lymphocytic choriomeningitis, can also infect people. It is transmitted through contaminated feces or dust.

Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease)

Weil's Disease is a bacterial infection caused by spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira that affects humans and a wide range of animals. All because more commonly transmitted to humans by rats, house mice are serious carriers of this disease.

Dermatitis

The bite of house mice mites can transmit a disease to humans that results in uncomfortable skin irritation and itching. The cause of this irritation is frequently mistaken for heat rash, fleas, allergies and other causes. These mites are capable of spreading through an entire house stricken by mouse infestation during certain times of seasons.

Rat-bite fever, Ray Fungus, and Ringworm

These diseases and others are commonly transmitted from house mice. Infections can result from mouse droppings, transported through the mice themselves, or transmitted to pets and then passed on to humans.

Summary

House mice cause millions in property damage and food contamination every single year. It remains one of the most costly drains in the rodent population on the nations economy. While they do so less frequently then rats, house mice role in the transmission of diseases to human beings should not be understated. Comprehensive mice control procedures are essential in successfully limiting the impact on human dwellings and their severe economic effects.
