Turkey House Plans – All You Need To Know Before Deciding on A Turkey House

So you have been raising a few turkey poults in the backyard for your own family’s consumption. Now you want to take your turkey project to the next level and raise more than what your family needs. What do you do now? How exactly do you scale up? The first thing you need to seriously think about is how to come up with turkey house plans.

From this point on, you should be ready to have room for adult turkeys, both males and females, and provide them with an environment that is conducive to reproducing and raising their own babies. If you have been into turkey poult-raising, you will find the next level easier because there is not a lot of difference from what you are currently doing.

Deciding on the best turkey house plans are an important factor in the success of your turkey raising project. Most turkey house plans will have provisions for heat lamps, which regulate the temperature in the breeding space. If you are looking at several plans, it is recommended that you choose one that is scalable. This way, you can scale it up should you decide later that you want more turkeys, or scale it down, if you want to downsize your stock.

Turkey house plans typically come with an accurate list of the materials that you need. For best results, stick to the list of materials unless you can make knowledgeable alterations to the plan. For example, purchase the required length of wood, as well as the required number of meters of meshed wire fence. The roof is something that you can have flexibility with. You can pretty much use any material of your choice for the roof, as long as it provides protection to the turkeys against exposure to the elements.

Finally, the typical turkey house plans should also have areas for males and females to breed. The breeding space should be comfortable enough to accommodate turkeys for the week-long breeding period. After the breeding period, the females will need a nesting box to lay their eggs in. The nesting box should be big enough to fit the nesting turkeys, as well as small enough to protect the eggs as they are laid one per day. It normally takes a week to fill the nesting box with eggs. After the week-long laying of eggs, you have the option to take the eggs away to incubate them, or leave them there for their mothers to warm until they hatch.

Basic Equipment You Will Need to Start Woodturning Projects

While it is easily understood that a wood lathe is needed to begin woodturning projects, there are a few other necessities before starting. Many of these are already found in the typical woodworking shop while others will need to be purchased.

The basic wood lathe comes with one or two faceplates for bowls and other large work; a spur center and tail center for holding spindle projects; and a couple of tool rests for different sized work. No cutting tools are generally supplied with the lathe.

While experienced turners will purchase individual tools, it is advisable for the beginner to get a beginning set. This will contain the necessary tools for spindle work. Usually this will be a roughing gouge, a couple of spindle gouges of different sizes, a couple of skews of different sizes, a couple of scrapers of different sizes and a parting tool. Such a set should be high speed steel, not carbon steel which is cheaper but does not hold an edge very long compared with high speed. Later on bowl and faceplate tools can be purchased or made. If the beginner is anxious to begin turning bowls, a one quarter inch bowl gouge will get them started and different sizes can be purchased later on.

Once the tools are purchased there needs to be a means to sharpen them. Woodworkers new to woodturning will be amazed at how often turning tools need to be sharpened. The usual means to a good edge is a grinder however most shop grinders have wheels too coarse to give a good edge on high speed steel. An aluminum oxide wheel of appropriate size should be purchased. It should be around eighty grit and a wheel dresser to keep it round and clean is really a necessity.

While some turners consider a sharpening jig to be a luxury, for a beginner it is almost a necessity. Sharpening woodturning tools freehand is a skill in its own right if not an art. Learning it at the same time as trying to learn woodturning is difficult and learning to turn with dull tools is almost impossible. A jig should be purchased or made at the very beginning.

One of the things that makes woodturning special is the ability to much of the time sand and finish a project on the lathe. Sandpaper in grits from eighty to two hundred twenty is usually found in the workshop but some turners like to go as high as two thousand grit for some projects. Usually up to three hundred twenty will be fine. Danish oil and similar finishes work well for most woodturnings and again is a typical supply of most shops.

Safety is an important part of any woodworking shop and work around a wood lathe is no exception. A face mask to protect from flying wood is a necessity as is a dust mask to protect the lungs from sanding. Hearing protectors are good to have. Most lathes are fairly quiet but saws, drills, sanders and dust collectors as well as other shop tools can cause hearing problems.

Tools to ready the wood for the lathe will likely be already in the shop. Bandsaws and table saws are often used and a chainsaw is a part of most woodturner's arsenals of tools.

A quick look at a woodturning catalog will convince any aspiring woodturner that bits and pieces can be acquired for years to come but these should get one started. Certainly a lot of enjoyment are contained in these few simple items.

True Cost Of Bad Telephone Etiquette

Do you ever call your office to check the way your employees answer the telephone? If not, you should since the way a person answers the phone sets the tone for the conversation. A phone call often represents the first impression of your business and determines how you're perceived within the marketplace.

Greeting callers with a cheerful smile translates into an enthusiastic voice that permeates positive energy to exude a warm welcome. Conversely, a dull, monotone "I can not wait to five-o-clock" tone travels like a bolt of lightening, painfully.

Bad telephone etiquette is widespread, occurring within major corporations, law firms, doctor offices, associations, nonprofits, financial institutions, small businesses, political offices, call centers, department stores, schools, and government and local agencies.

Poor telephone manners chase prospective clients and customers away, destroy customer satisfaction, damage your reputation, and hurt your bottom line. Negative word-of-mouth advertising spreads like wildfire and can be extremely detrimental to your business.

True Story: I contacted the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue Collections Division with an inquiry. The representative was not available but her voicemail left instructions to contact her college for further assistance at (202) 442-6807.

Lights, Action, DRAMA!

Rep: Good morning, Collections may I help you?

Shawn: Good morning, my name is Shawn Gilleylen and I have a question regarding the status of my application.

Rep: When did you submit your application?

Shawn: Two weeks ago – 14 business days.

Rep: WHY YOU CALLING ME !? (Frowned-Neck Rolling Tone)

THUMP! Knocked off my feet, shocked, dazed, and bewildered.

Even as a business etiquette expert, I struggled to maintain my poise and professionalism during this horrific ordeal. In a calm, professional tone, I asked, "Why do you have a negative attitude with me? I'm a tax paying citizen with a question. Your college left your name and number on her voicemail." After an awkward moment of silence, she changed her tone but it was too late, the damage was done.

Astonishingly, she was very comfortable treating the customer with bold disrespect and impoliteness. She felt as though she did nothing wrong. As a business etiquette expert, her actions and attitude reveal that this is normal, acceptable behavior within the culture of her workplace. In addition, it proves that she has not been trained properly.

When a business or individual ponders need or urgency for business etiquette training, I offer a guidance question: "Does the solution cost you more than the problem?"

To ensure that your customers, clients, and constituents do not experience bad telephone etiquette and poor customer service, develop and implement a plan to promote customer satisfaction.

Try following these common practices of successful businesses:

o Smile. Teach employees to smile, leading by example. Establish a culture of high quality customer service and commit to deliver superior service whether over the phone or face-to-face.

o Invest in behavior-based training. Differentiate your employees from the competition by their behavior, attitude, speech, dress, and personal approach to customer service.

o Protect your reputation. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

o Promptly return phone calls and emails. Acknowledge customers and clients so they do not feel ignored.

o Own up to mistakes, accept responsibility, and apologize. Do not go to war with customers over your poor service.

o Service, service, service.

Oh, you're probably wondering if the representative apologized for her rude and unprofessional behavior. In the spirit of "keeping it real," she works for a bureaucratic agency with a reputation of delivering poor customer service. Absolutely NOT!

This is very important when the period of accounts is less than one year. On the other hand, if the rate of depreciation is ‘per annum’ the depreciation should be calculated on the assets with due consideration to the period for which the asset has been used in business during the year. In case of additions to assets during the year, it is advisable to ignore depreciation on additions if the date of additions is not given. Same rule shall hold good for the sale of assets during the year.

Since stock at the end is an asset, it will betaken to balance sheet. On the other hand, so long as there is stock in trade, account for that must be kept open and thus be taken to the assets side of balance sheet.

Small Timber Homes – Maximizing Kitchen Space

When building a small timber frame house space can be limited, especially in the kitchen. Most of the floor space is used for the bedrooms and living area. When planning your timber home you should plan a kitchen that combines both entertaining and dining areas into one comfortable room. To attain this goal there are things that you need to consider to maximize your kitchen space and make it into the area you desire.

Assess what are your needs

The first thing to do is consider the ways in which you use your current kitchen. Think about when and how your family cooks, eats, and utilizes the current kitchen. Is it an eat-in kitchen or one that hosts large family dinners? If you are building a timber frame house for retirement, then there will generally be only two people in the house but if you have children, you need to consider space when they visit and if they have a family. If you have a small kitchen in your new timber frame house you will have other places for them to sit and eat.

Design the space

When you design your kitchen, you need to look at your lifestyle and your budget. You could design an open kitchen where it looks out into the living area. To create a personalized kitchen you can consider using timbers that are handcrafted, vaulted ceilings, and specialty woods. Having exposed beams and posts will allow you to distinguish visually separate areas without having intrusive walls.

Counter space

In addition to having counters, you could have a freestanding island where family and friends can sit and eat without being in the way of the food-prep area. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association if you have a large island they recommend that there be a thirty-nine inch walkway between the cabinets or walls and the counter seating so there is enough space for people to eat without hitting their heads on the wall Egypt cabinets. One configuration that is a popular design is a breakfast bar or island with a taller pub-table-height seating on one side and a food-prep surface on the side in the kitchen.

Dining table

If you have a small kitchen space but want to have a dining table, you could put a long table along one side between the living space and kitchen on one side of the cooking area. If you have figured in the plans a separate dining room, you could have a smaller dining table or a round one that is tucked into an alcove or corner.

After considering these things then it will be time to draw up your plans to build your dream timber frame house.

Timber Decking Kits – How to Build the Wooden Joist Sub Frame

Patio timber decking has become increasingly popular in the 21st century garden. In line with this, a wide selection of patio timber decking kits are now available to buy online, direct from the manufacturers and without the need to pay top-dollar prices down at the high-street DIY chains.

These kits are designed specifically to be easy and straightforward for the average DIYer to construct. Indeed, provided you have the basic tools held by most households – battery drill, saw, and a tape measure – there is almost nothing stopping anybody building one of these off-the-shelf kits in just a couple of hours.

Once you have decided where your deck is to be constructed, and prepared the over-site (the ground area onto which the deck is to be constructed) you can begin constructing the joist subframe. Why construct a joist subframe? There are a number of reasons.

Firstly, and most obviously, the joist subframe provides the DIYer with a strong and structurally sound base onto which all decking joists are mounted.

Another key reason, and one often overlooked by the DIYer (and the cheaper decking kit suppliers, for that matter) is that only treated timber should come into contact with the ground. On this basis, a minimum of C16-grade timber is required. C16 is very popular in Britain, and widely specified by architects, builders and DIYers alike for use as decking joist timbers. The classification C16 basically determines how many defects the timber has (such as grain defects, knots, etc) across the length, width and depth of the timber.

If the deck is to be raised, you will most likely use raised posts to hold the decking subframe in the air. Support posts should be no further than 3 meters apart, and regular 2″ x 4″ joists should, as an absolute minimum, be supported by the use of 2″ x 6″ timbers.

To ensure that the area underneath the deck is free draining, boards should be laid down along the gradient (Rather than against it). Raised decking support timbers are fixed through the use of either metal post anchors or metal spikes. The post anchors are bolt-down shoes, into which the vertical support timbers are inserted. The metal spikes are, quite literally, 60cm spikes which are driven into the ground and which act as ‘anchors’, into which the vertical timber support posts are inserted. Remember that any deck surface which sits at or above 60cm above ground level will fail to meet planning regulations. If in doubt, consult your local planning authority.

Danish Oil Vs Sprayed Lacquer

Danish oil is a hard drying oil used in wood finishing. It is made of either Tung oil or Polymerized Linseed oil. It gives a hard, water-resistant finish to wood products by soaking into the wood and hardening. It is used as a finishing product, but can also be used to seal wood or prime it before painting or varnishing.

Spray lacquer is another type of protective finish for wood. It is made with a combination of hardening oil mixed with resin and also a solvent. The solvent evaporates hardening and curing the lacquer to the wood. The ratio of oil to resin will determine drying times and the hardness of the finish.

Spray lacquer can be used as a sealant for wood, much like Danish oil. If you’re only using spray lacquer, the first layer will act as the sealant and primer. There are not a lot of solid components to spray lacquer, so several coats are often needed. Spray lacquer often gives a glossy finish that is desired for some projects. However, it is not as scratch resistant as a Danish oil finish.

Danish oil penetrates into wood, so there is no need to sand your project with a high-grit sandpaper. A little roughness makes it easier for the oil to penetrate. Oil finishes take a little more work to apply than a spray finish. Apply the oil so that it looks very wet and let it soak in for about half an hour. Rubbing it in will also help to keep it even and penetrate more deeply. You’ll have to keep applying to dry looking areas as you go for about half an hour. When the oil starts to feel sticky, you’ll wipe off any excess.

Danish oil finishes are very smooth and give a nice, nearly matte finish. However, you can’t apply Danish oils over stains or lacquers because they need to soak in to work. Tinted versions are available if you don’t want the natural color of the wood to be your finished product.

Wood will push oil out of itself for a few hours after application, so you’ll need to check it and wipe away excess oils every fifteen to twenty minutes over several hours until it stops. Drying your woodworking project in a cool area will help control leaking. Heat makes it worse, so rubbing vigorously will make it bleed more, too.

Spray lacquer finishes are done when they are dry, making them a little less labor intensive than Danish oil finishes. Danish oil finishes are sealed with lemon oil or a type of solvent wax as the last finish. This helps to protect the oil from drying out and also gives it a nice sheen. Oils and wax finishes can be reapplied every couple of years to restore the shine to your project.

Hardwood and Softwood – Lumber Wood for Furniture

Solid lumber wood has always been, and will always be the preference of serious woodworkers when it comes time to construct furniture. It is durable, resists shock and is a very sound investment, increasing the value of what you build, as well as increasing in value over the course of years.

Various parts of the world offer different kinds of lumber wood, with each having its own properties and characteristics. Because each tree offer different patterns, grains and markings, every wood, every tree, has a unique look and feel to the furniture that you create with it.

Solid lumber wood may have one of two classifications. They are termed hardwood or softwood. Hardwood is a tree that has broad leaves when it is alive, while softwood is a tree that is a needle-bearing tree such as spruce or pine, cedar or redwood. Hardwoods are, as the name implies, much harder and more resistant to damage.

Some of the most common building woods are listed below for your convenience.

Mahogany – hardwood, more aptly classed as medium hard. It is a red-brown or tan color and possesses a unique grain structure as well as poorly defined growth rings, but is durable and will hold its shape very well. It is perfect for furniture and very high quality cabinets because it is stable and will resist decay very well.

Superior and knotty alder wood is a good choice for cabinets, doors and custom mill work around the home. The fine, even texture of alder wood makes it similar to cherry although when applying stain you will get a few blotches that will provide additional character to the finished product. Its appearance and high quality make it a popular choice doors, cabinets, mill work and furniture. Once considered to be a poor boys maple, superior and knotty alder has come into its own as a hardwood for cabinetry and furniture. It even supports a market for using the knotty alder wood, for once stained the finished product can create something old world or brand new. It finishes beautifully with a light color and tight grain structure. Red alder is often used as a substitute to achieve the look of expensive cherry hardwood at a more affordable price.

Pine is a softer wood, a needled tree that grows in a wide range of areas of the world. There are pines in almost every country and where they grow may dictate some of the properties of the wood. There are White Pine, Eastern White Pine, Ponderosa pine, and Sugar Pine. The knotted characteristics of pine make it a popular choice for furniture even though it is less hard and easier to mar. It is paler yellow in color and is perfect to add warmth to your house. Pine will hold a stain very well.

Maple- a very hardwood is light in color, near blond and is a popular choice as a furniture wood. It is highly shock resistant and has even pores that make the wood look very even. It is durable and will take a stain very well, and as it is lighter in color, may be stained to resemble almost any other wood that you might like to emulate.

Beechwood-another hardwood with a very fine grain, beech is able to be used for nearly anything that you might like. Strong and stable, it is difficult to warp or bend beech. It takes a stain very well with smaller pores and a very visible grain and growth rings that create a warm and wonderful look.

With so many lumber choices available take the time to select what choice may be best for you. From alder wood to mahogany, the choices are endless.

Ergonomics – Product Design

What is Ergonomics and why should I know about it? Well this is a question to be asked to yourself if you are a services provider or a manufacturer.

Ergonomics is designing products, services or environment based on the human needs, behavior or usage. Following are the 5 important dimensions which better define Ergonomics –

1. Ease of Use – Products are designed to ensure that the user finds no or little difficulty in using and handling it.
2. Performance – Products are designed to alter their performance based on the user's need.
3. Aesthetics
4. Comfort
5. Safety

Although there are three broad types of Ergonomics which are accepted, the most important ones for manufacturers are – Physical and Cognitive Ergonomics.

Physical ergonomics is concerned with a human being's physical interaction with a particular product while using (consuming), handling or actually producing it. A manufacturer should design the process as well as the work in such a way that the worker is comfortable working there leading to increased productivity, low safety risk, better quality as well as reduction in production cost. This dimension of Physical ergonomics will benefit the Manufacturer. But the other benefit which will be derived would be a product which is easy to use and relates to the end user. Physical Ergonomics should not focus on just one factor but on these both. The manufacturer as well as the end user will benefit if Physical Ergonomics is applied efficiently. For the manufacturer this is a win – win situation as the company benefits from the benefits derived from process optimization as well as a good quality & easy to use product.

Cognitive Ergonomics is concerned with the emotional & motor responses of the worker as well as the user. This includes perception, motor responses, work load, stress etc. It is always advisable to apply both, the Physical and Cognitive Ergonomics instead of any one.

If you are a manufacturer and want to optimize your product and processes, you can either hire an employee or go for independent consulting firms. It is always advisable to get the consulting firms specializing in Ergonomics to do the job. This is because of the vast experience and expertise these companies carry across industries. Ergonomics being a highly specialized discipline, requires skill sets which are developed in a company or a person over a period of time. There are a few good Australian companies which provide such services to companies in Australia as well as across the globe. One such company is Design Industry which is a leading company in this field and has experience across industries such as banking, consumers, medicine, sports and many others. They have a team of highly creative as well as scientific members which is a rare combination but an ideal one for this job!

Choosing the Right Squeegee For Your Window Cleaning Job

If you decide to become a professional window cleaner, you will need to invest in the right equipment. Having top-of-the-line equipment is definitely worth the investment as a professional craftsman of any trade – window cleaning included.

In this article, I will discuss the various squeegees on the market and their proper application. There are many different makes and models of squeegees, each with their own pluses and minuses to take into consideration.

The standard window cleaning for the old-school window cleaner has been a brass Ettore squeegee. Brass was used because it is rust proof. As squeegees are constantly exposed to water, it was important to have a tool that would not rust.

However, brass is a reliably heavy metal. Later on, the major squeegee manufacturers began making stainless steel handles and channels. Stainless steel is stronger and lighter than the brass and is a definite improvement especially as one gets longer squeegees because the weight starts to add up.

Metal is a very durable material, but it has it's limits. For one, when it really takes cold outside metal squeegee handles absorb this cold; nothing is worse than having a freezing cold squeezeee. To solve this problem and to make squeegees lighter still, the squeegee manufacturers started making the handles out of very tough and lightweight plastics. These new squeegees are lighter and easier to grip.

Another advancement in squeegee technology has been the use of quick release levers. This allows the window cleaner to slide out the channel and change the rubber without the use of tools. Previously, the window cleaner would have to use a screwdriver to loosen the screws in order to do this. As rubber often needs to be changes fairly frequently, this really is a convenient option.

Still another advance in squeegee technology has been the pivoting squeegee. This is very handy for cleaning windows with a pole as it allows the squeegee to pivot. There are a few pivoting squeegees on the market. The most popular are the Unger Swivel Lock, The Ettore Contour Pro Plus, and the Wagtail.

The Wagtail freely swivels back and forth with very little resistance. This is really a great feature if you are very skillful with the pole as it allows the window cleaner to easily fan the window. However, having too much swivel may be too much to handle for the less experienced window cleaner.

The Unger Swivel Lock has the benefit of being able to adjust the level of tension, thereby, giving the window cleaner the level of swivel they want. It can also be locked into whatever angle in desirable. The Swivel Lock comes in two models, one with the standard 40 degree head and one with a zero degree head / I find that the zero degree version is the most versatile as it is easier to perform most pole maneuvers with a zero degree squeegee.

The Ettore Contour Pro Plus is in a class all it's own. It can swivel side-to-side (although not as well as the Swivel Lock or Wagtail) and it can adjust the forward-and-back head angle. So it can be a standard 40 degree squeezeee or you can click it into the zero degree position.

Zero degree squeegees are very handy for the window cleaner. It allows them to "close-out" windows with much greater ease (closing out means to go all the way to the edge). This is especially handy for windows with deep mullions or sills. Deeply recessed window may be almost impossible to clean without using a zero degree squeegee. They are also especially helpful for commercial windows with deep ledges.

Another consideration in selecting a squeegee is what size windows you will be using it on. If you plan on cleaning large store front windows, you may want to get a handle that is compatible with wide body aluminum channels. You see, when you want to go over the largest standard size channel (18 inches) you need to get a sturdier channels so that it remains straight and flush. The longer length of 22 "through 40" can more easily bow if not constructed more rigidly. The wide body aluminum channels (ex. Slayer Channels, and Ettore Super System) are very rigid and lighter than stainless steel. This is important, because when you start going above 18 inches you need to have the squeegee be as light as possible.

If you are planning to be a dedicated storefront window cleaner and you want to do large pieces of glass quickly, you may want to check out Sorbo's line of extra large squeegees. Using a 30 "squeegee will make quick work of those extra big car dealership windows!

How To Install Blown In Attic Insulation

Scenario:

I have just completed an addition to my house. I’ve heard that blown in insulation is better than batts since covers the joists completely and leaves no open areas. Do you have any do it yourself suggestions?

Solution:

Yes you are correct. Blown in insulation is better that batts when installed properly as it does seal the attic better.

First you need to measure your attic area that you plan on insulating. Most attics require a value of R-30, R-38 or R-49, depending on your climate and location. Once you know the square footage of your attic you can determine how much insulation you’ll need by simple looking on the chart located on the bag of insulation.

Before you get started you will need to determine what materials you will need. Assuming your home has recessed lights, ceiling and bathroom fans and eave vents you will need the following tools and materials:

Loose Fill Insulation

Cardboard Baffles

Flashing

Duct Tape

Staple Hammer and Staples

Utility Knife

Ladder

Insulation Blowing Machine (Available at your local rental store)

The attic will need preparation before you can actually blow insulation into it. Make sure you are wearing a dust mask, protective goggles and a long sleeve shirt. Recessed lights must have flashing installed around them leaving a open space of at least four inches from the flashing to the light. Using a utility knife cut a piece of flashing of the correct length and form it into a cylinder shape, securing the edge with duct tape. Place over recessed light leaving a four inch open area. This allows for the heat to escape. Use the same process for any vented kitchen or bathroom fans in the attic area.

The next step is baffles. This is a chore nobody enjoys. The baffles need be installed by using your staple hammer and install them where the ceiling joists intersect with roof rafters. Make sure you only install the baffles over the vents and that they are high enough so the vents won’t get covered with insulation. Now that you’ve installed you might want to climb out of the attic and give you back a much needed rest.

The next step of preparation is to make a dam around the attic access hole. The easiest way is to cut a few extra cardboard baffles into lengths of about 4 inches above the amount of insulation you plan on installing. Simply staple them around the perimeters of the access hole. This will allow for a uniform depth in the insulation you are blowing in.

So you don’t have to keep crawling in and out of the attic it’s best to have another person outside helping you load the insulation blowing machine. Hint: If you’re using fiberglass insulation have your helper add about a cup of water per bag, spreading it over the top after its loaded into the machine. This will help cut down static electricity when you are blowing the insulation and it will lay down more evenly when installing it. After the bag of insulation is loaded into the hopper it will take several minutes before the next bag is needed. Don’t let your helper be lazy. Have him get on the ladder and pull excess hose out of the attic for you so you don’t get tangled in it.

I’ve found blowing insulation into the attic is a simple process. Start and the far ends of the attic. Going back and forth make sure its level and smooth. Make sure to get all areas of the attic and don’t fill any vents or recessed light areas. Take a tape measure with you and check the levels once in a while. As an example, if your installing an R-38 of fiberglass insulation you would want it to measure 16 inches deep. As you work your way back near the attic access make sure your helper is getting that excess hose out of the way. When you get to about 6 feet from the access hole stop the machine so you can get on the ladder. Once on the ladder finish installing, making sure to bring the level evenly against the dam you previously built.

The final step is to place a piece of batt insulation in the access hole and carefully put the attic hole lid back into place. Now your done! Stay out of that attic as much as possible from this point as loose fill insulation that has been stepped on or crushed looses it’s R value.
